The Bronze Collective Theatre Fest: 2022 Rising From The Muck and Mire

T

he Rochester Bronze Collective announces the 8th Annual Bronze Collective Theatre Fest: 2022 Rising from the Muck and Mire now through February 19th Shows run 7:30 PM Nightly at the MuCCC Theater. Tickets are on sale at muccc.org.

The last time the Bronze Collective Theatre Fest was live and in-person, the 6th Annual Bronze Collective Theatre Fest offered a week of theater with eight different performances. The pandemic has reduced their offerings, but their commitment to African American theatrical programming has not waivered.

This year's 8th Annual Bronze Collective Theatre Fest spans three days but four different productions. These theatrical offerings range from children's theater to new play development reading to weightier social introspection and folklore subjects.

Local African American producers showcase variations of African American life through the vehicle of theatrical drama.

On February 9 Mayor Malik D. Evans announced that City Hall and most other City-operated public facilities will lift their mask requirements effective February 10. Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the statewide indoor business mask-or-vaccine requirement will be lifted starting Thursday Feb., 10, and will remain optional for businesses, local governments and counties to enforce.

The mask requirement for schools will remain in effect and therefore, City RCenters and Libraries will continue requiring masks in those facilities.

“Our libraries and recreation centers will continue to follow the state’s mask requirements for schools until further notice,” said Mayor Evans. “We recognize that the pandemic is not over yet, and applaud the Governor for keeping New York safe and open for business through her Winter Toolkit.

Rochester Launches ROC My Biz Online Business Platform

(Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2022) – The City of Rochester announced the launch of ROC My Biz: a free combined platform small-business portal, small business support navigator, and home-based business navigator. ROC My Biz will aid small businesses in Rochester by providing faster and better support services, and interactions with City Departments.

Reflections on Super Bowl LVI

S

uper Bowl LVI was a very interesting championship game played by two average football teams. The LA Rams are a deserving team that fought hard . After star receiver Odell Beckham went down with a knee injury the team regrouped to win Super Bowl LVI with a thrilling late game TD. The Cincinnati Bengals were unable to pull off another upset in a magical season for them.

The game’s MVP, Copper Kupp earned it with 8 receptions for 92 yards.

I also thought Rams All-Pro Aaron Donald could have easily won the MVP award with 3 tackles, 1 assist, and 2 sacks plus numerous pressures on the Bengals QB Joe Burrows. Donald was the most dominate player on the field. The Bengals QB was sacked a record 7 times along with 11 pressures. That’s almost unheard of - an NFL QB having to run for his life and play under serious duress. You must remember Bengal QB Joe Burrow was sacked 9 times against the Tennessee Titans. But once again the Rams won the game in spite of their QB Matthew Stafford lukewarm performance. Stafford came close to throwing another interception on the final drive but bounced the ball before the defender could get to it.

This was a fun game to watch and brought excitement to The LA area. Mayflower of Liberia: Remebering the historic journey of freed enslaved Africans from New York to Liberia.

Back to Africa...

A Presidential delegation went to Liberia to attend the bicentennial celebration which officially launched this week (Feb. 14,2022) in the capital city of Monrovia.

The celebration marked the arrival of the first free Black Americans to Providence Island on Jan. 7, 1822, which led to the establishment of the city of Monrovia, and in 1847, the Republic of Liberia.

Between 1822 and the American Civil War in 1861, some 15,000 African Americans settled in Liberia. The West African nation became the first democratic republic in Africa’s history upon its 1847 independence.

This January, when the U.S. State Department issued a statement to commemorate the initial arrival of African Americans to Liberia 200 years ago, it acknowledged the racist nature of the American Colonization Society (ACS). They are the group that purchased land in Liberia to resettle free Black people in Africa in order to deal with the “problem” of the growing number of free Blacks in the United States.

Buffalo Native Opens First Black Woman-Owned Electrolysis Studio In The Theater District In Downtown Buffalo

abiyyah Khan, entrepreneur and professional Electrologist, was first introduced to electrolysis as a cli-

ent.

The success of those treatments resulted in her journey to further study the practice.

“As a Black Woman stumbling through her own personal hair journey I felt I could help Rabiyyah Khan, relate to clientele who owner of Biyya struggled with similar Beauty Electrolysis hair removal traumas,” she said.

Buffalo born and raised, she recently opened her own studio, “Biyyah Beauty, Electrolysis by Rabiyyah” located at Sinclair’s Salon & Spa, 700 Main Street in the Theatre District.

“As a new mother, I found comfort in rebranding myself as an entrepreneur,” she continued. “I practiced in Manhattan and now taking the opportunity to build my own beauty business as the first Black owned electrolysis practice in Western New York.”

Rabiyyah’s qualifications and experience are impressive. She received her certification of specialized training in Theory and Practice of Electrolysis from Berkowits School of Electrolysis in Queens, NY. and provided treatment as an Independent Practitioner with some of the top agencies offering permanent hair removal in Manhattan.

In those roles she treated clients in all facets and all walks of life. She’s adept in offering those services to her transgendered clientele and more specifically in preparation for reassignment surgeries.

She specializes in multiple methods of electrolysis including thermolysis and blend. Additionally, she’s trained and experienced in multi-needle galvanic electrolysis.

A graduate of The Buffalo Academy for the Performing Arts, she holds degrees from the Fashion Institute of Technology and Full Sail University in Arts and Sciences which has allowed her to experience and enjoy Textile Engineering and also Production Management for high fashion events. Her private practice as an Electrologist is backed by years of acquiring expertise in precision and the desire to help others.

everal months ago East Side Avenues announced the completion of its second video series(2021) that lifts up the voices of people living and working on Buffalo’s East Side.

Understanding the tremendous opportunity to leverage New York State’s $65 million East Side Corridor Economic Development Fund, private and philanthropic organizations created a pooled $8 million East Side Collaborative Fund to support operations, programs, capacity building, and community infrastructure associated with five capital initiatives.

East Side Avenues brings together these public and private funders, community non-profits, anchor institutions, consultants and the City to plan and coordinate revitalization activities aimed at improving economic conditions on Buffalo’s East Side. The remainder of the program ranges from an aria from Still’s Puccini-esque opera Costaso and other works of his for violin and piano, for harp, and for orchestra to Ulysses Kay’s beautiful Pietà played by BPO English hornist Anna Mattix to Adolphus Hailstork’s Symphony No. 2, inspired by his visit to slave dungeons in Ghana.

“From Misty With Love”

Trailblazing Black Ballerina Misty Copeland Sends Message of Encouragement to Buffalo City Ballet Students

O

ver the holidays retired Judge James A.W. McLeod decided to go and see a local production of the Nutcracker which was being performed by the Buffalo City Ballet.

“It was a fantastic performance,” recalled McLeod. “It was clear that Executive Director Marvin Askew put a lot of work into it and it was financed completely by him. I was impressed!”

So much so that he contacted a “very good friend” who just happened to be the aunt of trailblazing Black Ballerina Misty Copeland. “ I told my friend what I had seen and how great these students were and how I believed they needed some encouragement above and beyond what Mr. askew had so beautifully done.”

He then asked her to send his copy of the program to Misty and ask her to autograph it or send back a note or something that might be given to the company.

“I was blown away by her response. Instead of a note she sent an autographed photo From left Mr. Askew and Judge of herself with the inscription: “To Brown girls of Buffalo City Ballet, my best, Misty McLeod and students Copeland.” McLeod had the photo framed and made a presentation to Mr. Askew and six pretty,beaming little ballerinas a week ago. The image will hang in the studio.

“These kids now have something special,” he continued. “Hopefully a line of communication opens up to help keep these young girls and boys Interested in ballet. And who knows, added McLeod? A visit by Misty herself may even be in the works someday!

He applauded her sensitivity and immediate response. “It shows her dedication - especially to this company of young African Americans. She knows the trials and tribulations she had to go through - and she took the time out to do something to keep them encouraged.”

-About Buffalo City BalletBuffalo Inner City Ballet was developed to give inner city youths from the undeserved community the opportunity to take part in comprehensive summer and after school dance training in the art of classical ballet. Buffalo Inner City Ballet provides daily classes to primarily young girls BUFFALO OPERA UNLIMITED presents between the ages 3 and 18 years with no prior experience in dance. Training offers a wide scope of cultural awareness through dance to minority youths, as well as non-minority who show an interest in learning dance.

The Department of Justice recently announced that officials will not reopen the case of Tamir Rice, the Black boy who was fatally shot by a Cleveland police officer in 2014.

After the federal civil rights investigation into Rice’s death was closed in December 2020, the child’s family and their legal team issued a letter to President Joe Biden’s administration, and the Department of Justice, calling for the investigation into the 12-year-old’s death to be reopened, the Grio reported.

Murder upon murder... Black on Black murder... Teenagers, young men and WOMAN stretched out in a pool of blood... Homicide tape everywhere... Folk waging war in the classroom... Non-stop beef... School isn’t safe... Suicide rate high as ever...

8 year- old KILLING themselves. Look it up... Prayer without action DON'T WORK. Folks waiting for principles, political figures, pastors, and a school board to raise their kids. I got news for you. Midnight basketball won’t do it and help isn’t coming. Time for parents to become the child's biggest cheerleader. Time to challenge our young people. We cannot raise our children as if it is the 60s and 70s. It's 2021. These young people have innovative minds. They bore quickly. We as adults have to constantly keep them involved. Keep their attention. We need to learn to understand their world.

If we don't understand their world, how can we teach them to live in it?

I wish I would depend on another man to knock on my door to direct my household. Be ACCOUNTABLE for your own kids. Look hard at what you created. Ask yourself a question: "ARE YOU RAISING YOUR CHILD/CHILDREN TO ONE DAY KILL MINE?" It’s a fair question because your kids share space not just in the classroom, but in the world.

Besides better parenting, I think there should be cameras that cover every inch of our schools. I’m sure folks will argue it’s a violation of privacy. But if you ask the child I’m sure they would rather have big brother watching over them while they learn as opposed to a gangbanger intimidating them from across the classroom. Closed circuit cameras should be inside and outside the school; the same kind of cameras used to capture license plates in school zones. Also, each class should have two-way mirrors. Big brother should be able to watch from the district police station. Parents should be able to watch their children in school from an app on their cell phone. We have groups the Government just gave thousands of dollars to. Just gave the district millions. Tell us why a state-of-the-art camera system shouldn't be installed. Tell us why state-of-the-art metal detectors shouldn’t be installed.

ANY of our children can be on EITHER SIDE of the gun. It’s very important to be more interactive than ever with our children. I have been working from home in one room for the last two years. I'm a social butterfly to a degree. My outlet in large part has been social media. No matter who you are, two years in covid lockdown is a lot of change. A lot of built-up frustration even as an adult. It's not all parents. But respect, accountability, and morals come from home.

Folks don’t just wake up and decide to kill. It's a process. Picture our children confined to home. A lot of them have been confined to their bedroom the last two years. Picture the mental effect. The only heroes, direction, and examples come from social media, Tik Tok, Facebook, and cell phones. They turn the TV on and all they see is adults engaged in nasty political wars. Brown vs Walton, democrats vs republicans, school board members screaming and yelling at each other, adults fighting in the church house, weed legalized. Everybody high. Mom screaming. Dad screaming. But the same adults on the news are talking about solutions. Speak Lord. We need you!

I need anyone who has a child under your roof or children period to simply spend 24 straight hours with that child. Have a conversation. Not just the adult talking and pointing out all that’s wrong. Listen to your child and find something to celebrate or build on. You would be amazed by what you find out. Constantly monitor their social media, check their cell phones. The key is to pay UNDIVIDED attention. If you hear something or see something you don’t understand, instead of passing judgment, offer an option. But whatever you do - just listen. Just listen. Our youth are clearly speaking.

Here’s an idea for the village. Ask the young folks: What do you want? What will make you feel safe? Make them feel inclusive in the process.

The weather is about to break and outside is beginning to open. What’s behind the mask is about to be unveiled. That built-up rage becomes a ticking time bomb once they hit the streets.

One wrong word… BO0M!!! The bomb detonates. Tick tock. Tick tock. Tick Tock…….

An Emergency, 'No Excuses' Community Meeting

L

ast week, deadly and potentially fatal acts of violence happened at one of Buffalo's public high school. One staff member was shot and a student was stabbed 10 times by another student. We, as a community, can no longer sit back and depend on the police, Buffalo Public Schools and anti- violence groups to try to resolve acts of violence and anti-social behaviors that have their beginnings in dysfunctional households all across our city.

In many of these homes are parents who had difficulties in school when they were students. Many of these former students did not attain the education, good parenting skills and social discipline needed to assist and guide their children to be a successful student and productive member of our community.

These parents and guardians need help and it is time we recognize this fact. It is a simple fact that broken homes generate a broken community and school systems and we cannot address the problems until we engage the student in conjunction with his neighborhood and home environment. We must address these conditions now without laying blame or giving excuses!

We Are Women Warriors will host a 'No Excuses' community meeting, Thursday, February 24, from 5-8 PM, @ the Frank E. Merriweather Library, 1324 Jefferson Ave. There will be a panel discussion and a Call for Action type of audience participation where the attendees will be allowed to offer comments or to ask questions. The panel will include BPS school board member, Sharon Belton- Cottman, community activists, Jesse Doyle, Sherry Sherrill & Lamar Smith; and Pastor Frederick Gelsey, founder of the Homicide Prevention & Education Program.

Scrap the Multi- Rental Idea at 725 Humboldt Pkwy!

Dear Community Leaders, In the last several hours I became aware of the City of Buffalo interest in Redeveloping 725 Humboldt Pkwy. Certainly anyone can see the need to improve the facility of an older school bldg. in one of the busiest corners in the area. Again, I'm all for a redevelopment scheme which will accomplish more than another 12 apartments. Cut the budget in half and take the other 4 million and develop the remainder of the neighborhood's rental needs where the yield will be a lot more than 12 units!

It is my opinion the site should remain in the public interest and better operated as a neighborhood services and public administration site, even perhaps a local bank or credit union branch - more walk up than drive as parking during business hours will be trying for residents and travelers.

It is my suggestion that the multi-rental idea be scrapped and look more to service an area in need which is local, accessible and walkable. There is a small lot for parking, which may limit parking space for staff or operator space (which may not be bad either, as it would encourage resident staffing and incentive to walk the neighborhood and sell the services). The stately appearance of the building itself will likely have to be preserved as well, as the Hamlin Park Preservation organization will insist that to be the case, again, much more suited to the service task.

There is a nearby site which is more suited to a development similar to what is proposed here.At the corner of Northland and Humboldt, there is an older church building which would certainly add more to the neighborhood as a housing development. Again, only a suggestion, but a mixed use rental and co-op ownership type of design similar to what has occurred on the West side of Buffalo recently. There is also the Asbury/ Babesville model as well, of a commercial cultural site, a service, really not part of that neighborhood's past. The area is very accessible and surrounding greenspace will add another advantage to offering cultural and lifestyle services, adding even greater value to the area.

Indeed this process is a long way down the track, but unfortunately, in an incorrect direction. even if you should reject any of my suggestions as alternatives. The facts remain: the area around 725 Humboldt is too busy, congested and commercial for your planned purpose and likely inconsistent with the preservation needs of the community. Survey the area and see what comes back.

There's still time I'm sure.

Eric Adams' Black on Black Crime...

T

he mass incarceration state was built to lock up as many Black people as possible and discussion of even modest reforms is shut down.

Such was the case in New York where the mayor and police commissioner smeared Manhattan's district attorney, forcing him to backtrack on his campaign promise of reducing the number of prison sentences. The Black face rises to the high place because of adherence to white supremacist ideology.

The term “black on black crime” is a particularly pernicious trope. It is a ruse used to absolve the systemic racism which kills Black people in a plethora of ways. It invalidates Black people’s suffering and gives license to law enforcement and its many acts of brutality.

Ironically, it also describes what is happening among a group of Black officials in New York City. The new mayor and his police commissioner committed a brazen political mugging of the Manhattan District Attorney.

New York City mayor Eric Adams personifies the political imperative to perpetuate an unjust system. Adams was a police officer himself before he went into politics. He has promised to give the police everything they want, including those things that Black people do not want.

His mayoralty is a classic case of the dangers of Black faces being in high and inherently corrupt places.

Adams uses fear of crime to gain support for stop and frisk procedures and bringing back the plain clothes units which killed men like Sean Bell and Amadou Diallo. New Yorkers are propagandized by the media into thinking that a police presence makes them safer and that criminal justice rules should never be questioned. Those who don’t believe in police state impunity are intimidated into changing their minds.

Alvin Bragg is Manhattan’s District Attorney and he quite rightly campaigned on a promise of seeking jail time less frequently. Shortly after taking office he issued a memo giving guidance to his prosecutors which detailed what crimes should be charged by his office and when incarceration should be requested. Bragg proposed no prosecution for sex work, misdemeanors, or non-payment of transit fares. Despite what his detractors claim, none of his proposals gave license to commit violent crimes. He seeks to help the mentally ill and unhoused and give them access to assistance instead of to a jail cell. But he was immediately attacked despite making sensible proposals to reduce incarceration in a way that would not endanger the public.

The Adams administration police commissioner, Keechant Sewell, made clear that there would be no justice allowed while she and her boss are in office. She very publicly undercut Bragg with an email sent to every NYPD officer claiming that Bragg made them less safe. “I have studied these policies and I am very concerned about the implications to your safety as police officers, the safety of the public and justice for the victims.”

Bragg’s biggest offense was proposing the end of charging for resisting arrest, unless there is also a felony charge. Resisting arrest is a catch all charge meant to intimidate or to ensure jail time. It is often used to defend against police brutality. The person who ends up hospitalized or dead after a police encounter is nearly always said to have resisted arrest. Sewell and others have lied about Bragg and what he clearly states.

Bragg also had the misfortune of issuing his recommendations shortly before two NYPD officers were killed. None of the particulars in that case were related to his positions on jail time, but his enemies made the most of a tragedy. The two officers were funeralized with great pomp at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, with a phalanx of thousands of police in attendance.

Well even that’s not true is it? The Raptors are Western New York’s only NBA team. As for the Six, for those that don’t know, the Six is also a moniker for Toronto. Of course making Drake the “Six Gawd.”

The Raptors started out the season fairly well and with fans in the building.

Currently, we find ourselves one weekend away from the All-Star break with Toronto holding court literally with a percentage of their fan base attending games at Scotiabank Arena. The Raptors are in six place in the Eastern Conference standings currently. And 11th in the league with a record of 31-23. Like many teams, the optimal position you want to be in once the playoffs begin would be at least the top four in your conference to have home court advantage.

The Raptors- Nuggets game was also a battle of the two teams in Six place in their respective conferences. The Denver Nuggets playing with the reigning MVP come into the Arena looking to put an end to the Raptors’ winning streak which is up to eight games. Possibly at the same time perhaps taking the hot spice off of the current Eastern Conference player of the week, Pascal “Spicy P” Siakam.

Nikola Jokic seemed to have his way throughout the first quarter while being double teamed. This was the same tactic taken on first time All-Star Fred VanVleet. With 2:59 left in the first quarter and the score 24-20 the NugA. gets big man had amassed 14pts, 2rbs and Dorcely 2ast. Coach Nurse showed signs of a full court press. But that didn’t last. At the end of the quarter the score was 31-25 in favor of Denver.

During the start of the second there were several stoppages in play. A couple of the starters on both teams rested towards the end of the first. Because of the impact of Jokic and Gordon the last quarter it was hard to not notice as they returned to the floor at the 7:20 mark in the second quarter with the Raptors down by one 37-36. At this point Toronto started to bite back with the help of their energizer bunny Chris Boucher. This is when Jurassic Park would begin to get loud. But atlas all that could be heard was the lyrics of the aforementioned “Six Gawd” where he refers to a trip being taken and now it’s like a ghost town.

Needless to say even within the “ghost town” in the Arena the claws of Toronto could be felt as they fought to take the lead.

The Raptors led going into halftime and at the end of the third quarter.

Picking up in the fourth quarter. Toronto defenders seem to be more physical with Jokic. While the Nuggets made sure every time Fred VanVleet dribbled the ball he saw two defenders. The Raptors also used a zone to “take the air out of the ball”. At the same time Siakam was hot as h…(you know the rest). In other words he was Spicy for this contest as well.

With 28.3 left in the fourth quarter Will Barton hit a fadeaway jumper that put Denver up 110-106. The game seemed to be over. But VanVleet comes out of a timeout to hit a three which makes it a one point game. Afterwards Jokic is fouled with 12.8 left. He missed two key free throws that would have sealed the game.

Following another timeout by Toronto, VanVleet was able to get open for another three pointer. This time he misses. The rebound though is recovered by OG Anunoby. OG attempts to put up a quick layup but he is blocked by the Nuggets “Mr. Everything”. Denver wins 110-109 which knocked the Raptors out of the Six spot in the Eastern Conference for the moment!!

Unfortunately, some so called fans started looting and destroying private property in downtown LA. There were several people arrested outside of SO Fi stadium as we left to take the shuttle bus back to the hotel.

The police had plenty of officers in combat gear riding in open vehicles just to get calm back in the downtown LA. It seemed like in two to three hours after the game calm was restored and the partying continued deep into the night.

It’s amazing how a city of this size had its stadium taken over by Cincinnati Bengals fans. Bengal’s fans were was dominate and let it be known to anyone within ear shot of them that this is now the lion’s den known as “The Jungle.” Everyone out in LA says the former Oakland Raiders are the team of choice in the City of Angels.

I was right with my prediction of taking the four points and Bengals to cover the point spread along with the Rams winning the game. I hope you won yourself some money on that one and now we look to next season. I especially see Free Agency coming up shortly. I hope you enjoyed the game. Take care and stay safe.

He diverted attention away from his shortcomings and returned to his days in the senate where he championed the crime bill which devastated Black communities.

Bragg succumbed to the pressure and undercut himself by meeting with Sewell, and then giving a mea culpa of clarifications that were not needed. He has gone from scorn to approval because he now says he will act like other prosecutors and put Black people in jail as often as possible.

Adams and Sewell have the media and other politicians behind them. Bragg has popular support from the people who voted for him but they do not act in the cohesive way that he needed. If there were a movement dedicated to fighting police state brutality in all of its forms, Bragg would have been protected. Instead political expediency, lies, racism, and cynicism won the day. If an elected district attorney can be bullied into submission, what are the odds for the average person? The odds aren’t good if individuals act alone. A vocal and organized movement is what Black people need all over the country to end the scourge of mass incarceration and the political power that ensures its continuation.
