Kansas City Chiefs vs. Philadelphia Eagles

The Phoenix, Arizona weather is sunny and cool but things are about to get hot in here as the teams are now in town for Opening Night.

The atmosphere is lively with Radio stations and print publications from around the world covering LVII. The Philadelphia Eagles came out first with some serious swag. They were led by their veteran players like Jason Kelce, Fletcher Cox, and Lane Johnson. Those three guys are some of the players left over from their last Super Bowl winning team in 2018.

Eagles Defensive End Brandon Graham said,” My goal has always been to play 15 seasons”, “I continue to play because of my love for the game.” “This Super Bowl run is more fulfilling because we’ve been here before and kind of know what to expect.” Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher Cox also expressed his love for the game and playing at an elite level for him continuing to play after a stellar career. Eagles QB Jalen Hurt said,” I’m blessed by God to be on this platform; “The years of hard work is paying off” His advice to young people is to work as hard as you can at your craft and good things will eventually come your way.”

The Kansas City Chiefs were up next and they did not disappoint the fans in attendance. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes had the biggest crowd of media people of both teams and he talked about his family, God and the overall motivation of being the best at no matter what he’s doing always wanting to achieve.

KC’s defensive back L’Jarius Snead said, “It’s his second Super Bowl trip in three years but last one (lost to Tampa Bay) was during the pandemic with no crowds for most of the season and no media or live fan contact during Super Bowl week”. “I’m truly enjoying everything about this year’s game and cherishing every moment with family and friends.”

You can tell most players were enjoying having fans back and atmosphere is back to 2019 Super Bowl week.I see a very good game coming down to the final moments with Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and 2022 NFL league MVP working his magic to pull out a hard-fought game 31 – 28. Buffalo’s native Chiefs Tight End Jody Fortson said of his injury that he has no issues with it and will be ready to go on Sunday. I would not be surprised if Fortson is added to the passing game especially with injuries to other receivers and speedster Mecole Hardman already ruled out of the game with a pelvis injury.

This is going to be an exciting game, so get your food and beverages and get ready to enjoy Super Bowl LVII.

The New York Times reported Tuesday that Federal law enforcement officials have arrested two people accused of conspiring to “completely destroy Baltimore” in what they described on Monday as a racist plot to demolish the power grid in a predominantly Black city.

Sarah Clendaniel, 27, of Catonsville, Md., and Brandon Russell, 34, of Orlando, Fla., planned to inflict “maximum harm” by targeting five facilities operated by Baltimore Gas and Electric, which serves 1.2 million customers in central Maryland, according to a complaint filed in federal court.Russell is a founding member of a neo-Nazi group called the Atomwaffen Division.

Justice Updates: Deyanna Davis and Tyler Lewis

Reward Seeking Justice for Tyler Lewis $11,500!

There is now a total of $11,500 reward for any information that leads to the arrest of the person(s) responsible for the murder of Tyler Lewis; $7,500 offered by Crime Stoppers and $4,000 offered by the family.

The family of Tyler is not confident that his case is being prioritized, as the District Attorney’s office and University at Buffalo Police maintain. Nearly four months have gone by, and the Lewis family recently made a trip to Buffalo, where they met at the Ellicott Complex at UB’s North Campus where Tyler was murdered and passed out flyers hoping to find answers.

A business major and promising student at Buffalo State University, Tyler was stabbed to death on October 14th, 2022. According to the family, Tyler was out with four guys he was acquainted with, and he was on the phone with his girlfriend just minutes before everything happened. Not much is known about the details between that phone call and his murder. There’s only one camera near the parking lot where the crime took place, and it doesn’t appear to face the scene. Although the University has described the incident as “an altercation between known individuals,” the District Attorney’s Office has made no claims to the main suspect’s identity or provided the family with any information that would confirm their claims.

We know that Tyler left Buffalo State University with four men, some college students, and went to UB North Campus. According to sources, after Tyler was stabbed at least one of the men reported the stabbing to a Resident Assistant and all four men left the scene. At this time it is believed that the individuals Tyler was with have retained legal counsel and are not speaking to the family or providing any more information about what they witnessed that evening.

UB Police and the District Attorney’s Office has provided a description of the main suspect who was seen fleeing the scene, different from the four men Tyler was with. According to police, he is a White male between 5’5” and 5’9”, he was wearing a mustard-colored blood stained shirt, had dirty blond hair, and had lacerations (cuts) on his face. There is a witness who stated there was at least three other White men with the main suspect and they were said to be fleeing the scene in a 4-door black sedan.

Following the visit from Tyler’s family to WNY, John Flynn broke his silence and made the following comments in a statement to the press, “While it is my policy to not comment during an active investigation, I want to assure the Lewis family, University at Buffalo and Buffalo State University communities, and the public that this case remains a top priority,” Flynn said. “I understand the difficulties of waiting for answers and recognize the importance of transparency in this case. We have been in communication consistently with Tyler’s family to provide updates without compromising this ongoing investigation.” Further, Flynn stated that the investigation is “nearly complete.”

Tyler’s family maintains that Gary Hackbush from the District Attorney’s office has not provided any informative information regarding the investigation into their son’s murder. Once considered one of the safest communities in America, Tyler’s family and the community are struggling to understand why there have been no arrests made in this brutal murder on UB’s North Campus. Update on Deyanna Davis: Justice Has Not Been Served

Deyanna Davis appeared in court on February 1st, 2023 in front of Judge Case. She accepted a plea deal that included a D-Felony and will be facing a sentence of 2.5 years in jail. Her sentencing has been delayed until mid-May to “allow her baby time to finish weening.”

A mother of 5, Deyanna was driving home from a funeral on June 1st, 2020 when she turned down Bailey and was engulfed in a protest. Deyanna maintains that she was shot in the back, likely by a passenger in her vehicle who is currently sentenced to seven years in prison. From there, combined with the chaos that was going on, she maintains she lost control of her vehicle, striking state trooper Ron Ensminger who was situated on the other side of a thick oily cloud of tear gas. She was shot multiple times throughout the event with large live ammunition and spent hours in surgery, days in the hospital and over a month in jail. Five officers, the city of Buffalo and New York State are facing law suits from their actions that evening.

Deyanna has been out on bond since the summer of 2020, and has been working to get her life back on track since that evening. She will be postponing her masters program, where she is currently pursuing an MBA at Medaille College, and she’ll be leaving behind five children while she serves out her 2.5 year sentence.

Justice has not been served.

The Great City of Timbuktu

*The Malian city of Timbuktu had a 14th century population of 115,000 - 5 times larger than mediaeval London. Mansa Musa, built the Djinguerebere Mosque in the fourteenth century. There was the University Mosque in which 25,000 students studied and the Oratory of Sidi Yayia. There were over 150 Koran schools in which 20,000 children were instructed. London, by contrast, had a total 14th century population of 20,000 people.

*National Geographic described Timbuktu as the Paris of the mediaeval world, on account of its intellectual culture. According to Professor Henry Louis Gates, 25,000 university students studied there.

*Many old West African families have private library collections that go back hundreds of years. The Mauritanian cities of Chinguetti and Oudane have a total of 3,450 hand written mediaeval books. There may be another 6,000 books still surviving in the other city of Walata. Some date back to the 8th century AD. There are 11,000 books in private collections in Niger. Finally, in Timbuktu, Mali, there are about 700,000 surviving books.

*Professor Ahmed Baba of Timbuktu is recorded as saying that he had the smallest library of any of his friends - he had only 1600 volumes.

What Does It Mean to Practice Self-Love?

While February is known as a month to celebrate romantic love, this month we want to celebrate YOU. When you grow to love yourself fully, you have a deeper well of love to share with others.

You become more comfortable in your own skin, appreciate your own contributions more, and strengthen your mindbody-spirit connection. You become more present with loved ones and inspire others to love themselves more, too!

Here are a few things you can practice, to begin loving yourself more:

• Stop comparing yourself to others. No one else brings the unique gifts that make up who you are in the world.

• Be kind to yourself when you make a mistake. There are no mistakes, only opportunities to learn and grow.

• Set healthy boundaries for yourself and others. Trust yourself to make good decisions. Respecting your own needs will blossom into greater self-respect.

• Start a mindful meditation practice. Allow yourself the space to expand into the full expression of you and connect with your higher self.

• Choose mindfully, what you allow into your brain and body. Nourish yourself with healthy foods, uplifting content, supportive companionship, and enriching meditation + yoga practices.

The Heart is Widely Used as a Symbol of Love So Why Not Love it Back With Healthier Food Choices

The heart is the iconic celebratory symbol of love around the world and without its powerful role to pump life through the body we would not be here to enjoy it, so it's important to take good conscious care of it.

With Heart disease being the leading cause of death in the United States particularly among African Americans and especially Black women, killing nearly 50,000 annually, it’s a good time to take self-love to a new level of focus. Taking care of your heart with healthy habits and food choices is the ultimate gesture of love.

Foods to reduce / eliminate from diet: Sodium is a big culprit causing conditions like high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke, so put down that saltshaker! Most foods naturally have sodium the body really needs so skip the over salting of your food. Eliminate processed foods (junk food, white rice, pastas, breads) processed meats (cold cuts, canned meats) Other big problem foods like pork, red meat, eggs, cheese, sugary foods and greasy fatty fried foods. When reading food ingredients look for words like 'trans,' 'hydrogenated,' or 'partially hydrogenated' on the label those bad fats should be avoided as much as possible. So please take the time to read.

Foods that can protect and strengthen your precious ticker: Fruits never fail, but these fruits have some fighting power when it comes to the heart. Blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, cherries, oranges, pineapples, grapes, apples, pears, cantaloupe, papaya among other fruits.

*If you take heart medications, beware of grapefruits as they are known to enhance drug toxicity of antiarrhythmic agents) Veggies including leafy green vegetables, the whole lettuce variety (butter lettuce is most easily digested) collards and mustard greens, spinach, kale and swiss chard. Carrots, purple cabbage, broccoli, asparagus squash red bell peppers avocado, tomatoes. Whole Grains like oats (although processed they are safe just read the label) millet, brown rice, quinoa, barley, buckwheat.

Potatoes of all variety especially Sweet potatoes. Legumes red beans, black beans, lima beans, (aka butter beans) fava beans, blackeyed peas, lentils and chickpeas.

Fish salmon, sardines, tuna and other cold water fish (baked, steamed) and if you can get fresh canned fish will provide that same benefits. Nuts especially walnuts that are know for their heart protective properties, almonds ( all unsalted nuts are best) Other foods like soy, tofu, edamame, olives and cold pressed extra virgin olive oils are excellent choices to add to your diet as well.

*By the way don't believe the hype, wine is alcohol and all alcohol can weaken the heart muscle and slow your heart pump rate.

So when you plan your selfcare checklist show your heart some love and include foods that will keep in strong and healthy.

Be Well Enjoy Good Health

Hey guys!

If you're reading this you probably live in Buffalo, and you would know that recently we just had a crazy extreme blizzard. I had an experience of my own and I would like to share it with you guys.

Friday afternoon I had just woken up because I felt a cold breeze hitting my leg. My AC was still in the window and snow seeped through the cracks of it. The snow was all over my bed and floor. To solve this I asked my dad to help me take it out. Eventually we got it out the window but the window was frozen open a bit so we couldn't close it completely. I could no longer stay in my room because it was to cold so I decided I was going to sleep down stairs since it would be warmer downstairs. Until the worst of the worst happens, THE POWER GOES

OUT!

The power was out, so we used the stove top to heat up the house a bit and made a bunch of candles. We didn't have any power, so we had to charge our devices in the car. Hours later we still had no power, the house was freezing cold, so my brothers were trying to keep themselves entertained. My brothers were running around like maniacs and messing up every inch of the house, so I let them watch a couple movies on my phone. By the end of the movie, my phone was almost dead so I put it down and helped my grandma out a bit with my siblings. My sister was getting bored and annoying, so I did her makeup for her. After I did her makeup, she got dressed up in her play clothes and did a little fashion show. That night we all fell asleep in the living room and slept all bundled up together.

The next day we were running low on food and there were eight of us in the house, so my brother and I decided to walk to the corner store. While we were walking, I was freezing and I couldn't see to the point I couldn't even see my brother who was not that far away from me. I tripped and couldn't see and I was freezing cold so we walked a bit further, then I tripped again. I couldn't feel anything because I was too cold so my brother and I walked back home. When we got back I changed into some fresh clothes and bundled up in all of my blankets.

Later that day my dad and I needed to take his friend home back to his family, he got stranded at our house in the blizzard. We got a little ways there then the wind started to pick up so my dad and his friend had to stick their heads out the window to see where we were. We couldn't get any further so we had to turn back around, thank God we made it home safely.

That’s all for today thank you for reading. Bye!

Will ‘Chocolate’ Bowl LVII be a Sweet Delight?

Since the Buffalo Bills inglorious exit from the Super Bowl LVII derby, I’ve found it rather difficult to get excited about this year’s spectacle. Admittedly, with the Bills out of the picture, I have lost much of my fire. In truth, I don’t really much care who wins the game.

A devoted reader, whose fervor has also dwindled, recently told me that the only thing she is concerned about now is where her lucky squares line up on her – winner take all - $500 Super Bowl squares game. Likewise, I have a dog that fight and hope one of my squares will be the big winner. But I digress.

Let me tell you, I was a little surprised by some of the feedback from last week’s column and my provocative, if not, controversial ‘chocolate candy’ reference to the two starting quarterbacks who will be making history – history with a small “h” – as the first two black QBs to face off in a Super Bowl.

I must tell you that the ‘white, milk and dark chocolate’ references woke me up out of my sleep and came to me as a humorous way to enliven the article. To be sure, some people got a laugh out of it, but others found the reference a little disturbing.

Part of the general misgiving was that: (1) A journalist should never focus on the color of a player’s skin, but rather, on the skill, content and character of his/her game; and (2) The chocolate candy reference is not something a White journalist, or pundit, could ever write or speak, without being excoriated for it. Clearly, such a comment would go over like a lead balloon and result in said pundits immediate and permanent expulsion from the mainstream media world.

As I see it, however, this may be one of the few manifestations of ‘black skin privilege’ where an African-American journalist can tell like it is – even in a humorous context. I decided to exercise that ‘privilege’ here, because I thought it was a funny analogy and because I can get away with it. But, as one can probably tell, I wasn’t trying to get deep with it. I was just going for a cheap laugh, but at the same time, celebrating the NFL football history that these two Brothers have now made.

However, after getting so much feedback – both pro and con – I wanted to reach out to the larger Challenger readership to hear your thoughts on the subject. The question is whether the reference to ‘chocolate candy’ QBs was a loutish and insensitive remark that should never be uttered in mainstream media circles; or whether you got a little bit of a belly laugh out of it, and then kept it moving.

As a proud and reasonably conscious Black man, I believe that in the world of athletics, we have always seen “race and color.” Usually, we fans root for the team, or the competitor that looks the most like us.

All things being equal, we cheer the most for those of our own tribe. This phenomenon cuts across all the lines of race, color and nationality. In my view, it is how we humans are wired.

Thus, it seems out of place to me, when we exalt the social, political and journalistic protocols that refuse to acknowledge the role of race and the legitimate instances where valid commentary can and should be made thereon.

LOCAL ARTIST LOWDOWN

A LITTLE R&B FOR YOU

Along with the emerging hip-hop scene, is a group of energetic, youthful and unique vocalists. Whether they’re helping you’re favorite rapper on a hook or in their creative cocoon preparing for their next project, Buffalo’s rising r&b artists possess a multi-creativity that transcends all genres. Pr0 Social, Tru Jouney and Jada all utilize versatility through their vocal ability and sound to make music that is just as intimate and soulful as classic r&b, but fresh.

What’s a better way to usher in the day of love than to listen to these artists?

Pr0 Social (IG: @prettypr0social )

“This album is about growth, pain, love, loss, and recognizing when something needs to be put to rest. My hope is that someone listening will be inspired to examine what they need to bury as well” said the artist.

Originally from Rochester, artist Pr0 Social has made a unique lane for himself in Buffalo’s music scene the last few years. Existing within the eclectic integration that is alternative r&b, the rapper-singer has gained headway in his skills and knack for creating songs that are intense, informative and enjoyable. His recent effort titled “Things I’ve Buried” finds the young artist introspective - evaluating his mental space, laying to bed past relationships and embracing his future all while hitting somber, entrancing notes. The album is also stacked with phenomenal features from Drumwork’s own Jae Skeese to Free Music Party members Eddy Blanco & Kevin Spears, just to name a few.

Tru Journey (IG: @Trujourneymusic )

Tru Journey is a hidden gem. Mixing electronic elements with his gentle croons, the artist’s minimalistic, yet dynamic approach to his music feels nostalgic and futuristic at the same time. Performing at local shows throughout the city, the singer/ dj recently shared songs from his 2018 project “Love. Dream. Noise.” Despite the work being out for over 5 years, the project is an impressive display of Tru Journey’s ability to manifest soulful, intimate music through any genre. It's hard to not keep the project on repeat.

Jada (IG : @jadaracquel )

Making waves late 2019 with her blowout ballad “Once, Always,” Jada captured the modern experience of relationship and heartbreak through trap infused r&b. Her follow-up “Moody” also kept the pace with her signature 808-led, ambient, soul sound. But her most recent project, and first body of work “Extremely Bad Advice,” Jada finds her footing. The 7-track project adds more context to the singer’s relationship woes and her sonic profile. Recounting the ups and downs of romance and love on colorful, rhythmic production, Jada walks you through this journal entry-like project that is both relatable and radio-ready.

"Co-leading or participating in a reading group offers an opportunity to engage persons with different viewpoints in open conversations and discussions. At a time when the divide among people seems insurmountable, the reading group is a safe space for expression and the exchange of ideas" said Holley.

Why and how do we choose to serve others? What is the nature of the relationship between those who serve and those who are served? If we serve, what sustains and renews us? How does our service impact our communities? The readings in this series — drawn from literature, philosophy, and religion — invite reflection on these and other questions."Reading Groups invite one to travel, explore, think, form opinions and expand thoughts. said Claire Schneider, President, C.S.1 Curatorial Projects and founder and organizer of the annual reading series.

The Readings will include selections from: The Civically Engaged Reader: A Diverse Collection of Short Provocative Readings on Civic Activity Edited by Adam Davis and Elizabeth Lynn This anthology includes more than forty short readings that invite reflection on all kinds of civic-minded activities--from giving and serving to leading and associating--and on the vital connections between thought and service. Authors range from Aristotle to Kafka, Langston Hughes to Jane Addams, Andrew Carnegie to Pablo Neruda.

Holley spoke on readings that have stuck out in her planning for this session. "Having heard Dr. King’s “Drum major” speech for many years, it seemed to take on another dimension when placed in the category of Serving. The challenge to individual service questions collective service for the greater good. It begs us to answer why we serve. On the other hand, reading the Charles Chestnut story, “The Wife of his Youth” translates into contemporary issues of color that still permeate in the African American community. Can one go against the rules of the community and speak the truth?" she said.

*Event is Free and reading materials will be provided digitally or in person. Feb. 15, 6-8pm session at Merriweather Library. For info + register http://www.cs1projects.org/#/justice-talking/ and for questions contact Claire at (716) 884-3971 or claire@cs1projects.org

Lum Smith: Retired Buffalo Public Schools’ Administrator and Historian

Distinguished gentleman, scholar, historian, and retired Buffalo Public School administrator, Lum Smith, transitioned in his home, Saturday, January 28, 2023. He was 79.

Public visitation will be Friday, February 10 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Alan R. Core Funeral Home, 1933 Kensington Ave., Buffalo, and Saturday, from 10 a.m. –11:00 a.m., followed by an 11:00 a.m. celebration of Smith’s life at Zion Dominion Global Ministries, 895 North Forest Rd., Amherst.

Many have described Smith as a “walking encyclopedia” of Buffalo’s history, with particular focus on his plethora of knowledge relating to the timelines of historical data and events of WNY’s African American community.

His rise to this prominent position began when he, as a teacher during the 1970’s, recognized that students and colleagues had limited, if any, knowledge of the vibrant history of Black America.

“I saw, first-hand, the necessity for the infusion of Black History,” said Smith in a 2018 interview that celebrated his life and accomplishments. He also witnessed the need to invalidate many misconceptions and perspectives that were believed as truths, but were in fact misrepresented, underrepresented, or lost or stolen from the African American story.

He was known to spend countless hours at the Historical Society and Central Library, searching and analyzing information that provided supporting evidence about the journeys, tragedies, and triumphs of Black people in America. His passion to educate and enlighten propelled him to share what he learned with students and colleagues. Smith humbly recalled that, “During the 10-years that I worked with the BPS School Integration Department, I did presentations, each day, at a different school.” His community service did not end when the final bell rang signaling “dismissal” at the end of the school day. He was known to engage family and friends with volumes of information that would become part of his collection of memoirs of the area’s history.

Smith stood by his belief that the education of the entire community should be continually and consistently taught through special events focused on the African American perspective, and depicted through pictures and eyewitness accounts at schools, churches, and cultural institutions.

His memory was unmatched and demonstrated as he recalled the most minute details and stories of sports and historical events of Western New York. He loved history, music, and sports. He was known as an “Athletic Great,” and was considered an all-star, remembered for his athleticism and sportsmanship as a member of Buffalo State College’s basketball team. He was also on the steering committee for the Buffalo Inner City Sports Legends.

Though retired from BPS, over a decade ago, he continued to work as a substitute administrator until the day before he departed this life.

Mr. Smith went above and beyond and was always taking part in various school events as an attendee, guest speaker, and constant encourager of students and staff. The riddles and limericks that he posed to the children always left them smiling. He enjoyed sharing his wealth of knowledge with everyone he met.

Smith is survived by a son, Travis, and a sister, Dorothy Smith.

Respectfully submitted by Jennifer Earle-Jones Colleague and Friend

Dr. Nevergold Alexa & Edreys Wajed
Gentleman, Scholar, Historian

Brandon Hawkins, Katelynn Bolden and Erica Seymour represent everything positive about this city’s progressive young African American professionals.

Hawkins is a veteran Buffalo police officer now in his 16th year of service. He is a college graduate where he studied criminal justice. He grew up on Buffalo’s East Side and choose a career in law enforcement because he wanted to make a positive difference.

When he was 21 he was stopped by the police for driving with tinted windows.

“They pulled me over on Bailey and Kensington. My rights were violated. They pulled me out the car, were looking down my pants in the middle of the street…I just felt so hopeless. I didn’t want anybody else to ever have to feel like that.”

Katelynn joined the police force when she was just 20 and has served for six years. She majored in psychology and sociology in college and comes from a family of law enforcement officers which includes her father who is a Lieutenant in corrections, and an uncle who retired from the police department the year she was hired..

Erica is an experienced, licensed mental health counselor who was employed by an agency contracted by the department to provide mental health services. She holds a BA in psychology and a masters in mental health counseling.

The three worked together as members of the Buffalo Police Behavioral Health team headed by Captain Amber Beyer. Created in 2020, the unit is designed to respond to people suffering mental health crises.

But last May “behavioral health” appeared to be a very real issue within the department itself.

-“Racist Rant-”

This past November – after seven months of trying to resolve the problem within the unit failed – Hawkins, Bolden and Seymour filed a 17-page lawsuit in Federal court accusing Beyer of creating “a hostile work environment for African American employees.”

The suit also names the Buffalo Police Department and City of Buffalo as defendants.

The lawsuit alleges that on May 2 another member of the team, showed Beyer “a viral video" of an incident in another city, where two White police officers profiled and pulled over a Black officer who was wearing his uniform. Captain Beyer stated that she could see “both sides” of the incident. Officer Bolden challenged her stating that the video clearly demonstrated “racist intent” by the White officers in the video.

What followed was a 20 minute racist rant where Captain Beyer, who referenced herself as a White woman, made the following derogatory remarks according to the lawsuit: •Black men cheat on their wives more than White men ("Ain't that right Jamie?" she said referencing another White team member in the room.)

•All the Black police officers she knows are unfaithful; that the entire Buffalo Police Department knew it, and that it was

a running joke at the BPD.

•If she saw a Black man in her neighborhood, she would be suspicious

•White officers get PTSD from working in Black neighborhoods like the East Side of Buffalo, but Black officers do not because they are used to violence and Black people commit more violent crime than White people.

• Officer Bolden and the officer who showed the video, should try hard to understand why people are racist, and that the criminality of Black people justified some racism.

•If a White person is robbed by a Black person that it would be logical for that White person to have racist views.

Captain Beyer continued to rant.

Katelynn said that the captain did apologize to her later , saying, “I know you don’t know me that well but I’m not racist. I’m just repeating what my husband and his friends say” (her husband is a lieutenant who still works there).

In the days that followed officers texted one another expressing shock at what happened. Eventually one of the officers filed a complaint with Internal Affairs at the Buffalo Police Department.

But after it was filed, Beyer became retaliatory and made life hell, “especially for Brandon.” Her actions, the suit said, “made him personally uncomfortable."

The Lawsuit continued. “Captain Beyer showed a complete lack of remorse, saying she did nothing wrong and told them nothing would come of the investigation anyway.

She was right. It went nowhere.

Captain Beyer “increased her inappropriate behavior” and on September 29 a second incident occurred when she read a printout of a Facebook page by a mentally unwell resident who she wanted the team to check on.

“She began to read the Facebook post in dramatic fashion, repeatedly yelling the word Niggas” as she leaned on Officer Bolden’s desk beside Officer Hawkins.

The entire Behavioral Health team was disturbed by this. Bolden spoke out, “Can you please say the ‘N’ Word instead?”

Beyer replied sarcastically “I’m just reading the post.”

Seymour, who left the room in tears, was followed by Beyer who assured her that she was not a racist. “I have colored people in my family,” Beyer said.

Seymour resigned. Then she was talked out of it. Then fired.

Citing what she called a lack of accountability in the department, Seymour told the Challenger, “racism is very much present (within the department). We don’t matter…”

After the 2nd incident Captain Beyer still wasn’t suspended until 2 months later, a week after they presented their lawsuit. She remains suspended with pay.

Officer Hawkins revealed during an interview with The Challenger, that after the second incident, he went to the union (PBA) about the email reading, but was told that commissioner Gramaglia didn’t want to touch it because he didn’t want any negative publicity.

“So the administration ignored this all this time so they

VOICES

wouldn't look bad,” said Hawkins. “They told me if I’m not satisfied with the way they’re handling this I didn't have to be a part of the union.”

According to Bolden they were also told by the union that “we were suing based on our opinion.”

Officers Bolden and Hawkins told the Challenger that it was not unusual for Beyer to mimic Black people by “talking Black” and even “pimp walking” in the office at times.

The lawsuit lists other incidents and circumstances that raised the officer’s stress and anxiety levels.

According to the lawsuit: Officer Hawkins is facing physical stress as well, unable to sleep and suffering from an accelerated heart rate and worsened blood pressure. Despite medical recommendations by the BPD doctor and his own personal doctor, the BPD has denied his request for continued leave and refused to provide an explanation.

“I asked the PBA, if I come to work and have a stroke and die who’s responsible?” said Hawkins. “They said nobody.”

“I haven’t been eating properly and I’ve lost 20 pounds since this all happened,” he added. “There are people right now that have no right to be on Administrative Leave and they don’t look like us.”

"Officer Bolden is out for a physical injury and is extremely distressed by these events. She is concerned about returning to a changed work environment where racist behavior is tolerated,” cites the legal papers.

Officers Hawkins and Bolden are using their personal leave time to remain out of the workplace, which, they say according to their sources, is also a matter of safety.

Katelynn said she's been using her personal time since her therapist said she suffers with anxiety and depression. "I also suffer from insomnia and I'm not eating these days. This is all I think about. This is all I talk about,” Officer Bolden noted.

“The city is treating the victims like the perpetrators,” said Attorney Nate McMurray, who is representing the officers and member of the Behavioral Health Team.

“We always hear about how cops treat the community," Officer Hawkins continued, “but you never hear about how cops treat cops working inside the system."

To say they’re being treated unfairly is an understatement.

The Police Department is trying to force them back to work or face being fired.

The union – to which they pay dues – is doing nothing.

The Police commissioner is not helping.

Meanwhile Amber Beyer is somewhere chillin’ and collecting a paycheck.

“If she can be shielded for what she caused, why do we have to be thrown back into it?” concluded Officer Bolden.

Brandon Hawkins, Katelynn Bolden and Erica Seymour are standing their ground.

They need this community and its leaders to stand with them. -A.B.

The Killing Fields Of Memphis!

Memphis, Tennessee. My hometown, and the home of the Blues, as sung by W. C. Handy, Rufus Thomas, Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith and B.B.King. The Home of so-called ' Race Music, ' Contemporary Music and Rock and Roll as sung by Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Otis Redding and of course, Elvis Presley.

Memphis is also the place where the Tipton County Sheriff took my great uncle to be incarcerated, in Shelby County, before they brought him back to Covington Tennessee, to be tried for a crime he did not commit!

My great uncle, who was lynched by the local KKK, was one sibling of a set of twins. His brother was involved in a shoot-out with a White deputy sheriff who took it upon himself to visit the speakeasy or juke joint owned by the twin brothers. The brother and the deputy sheriff both pulled out their gun and shot one another to death! Since a White man was killed by a Black man, who was now dead, the sheriff exacted vengeance by arresting the surviving twin and charged him with the murder of his deputy.

A few days before the trial, the sheriff drove, alone, the eighteen miles to Memphis to pick up the prisoner. However, as soon as the sheriff's car crossed the Tipton County line, the

sheriff's car was ambushed and the prisoner was taken from the car by KKK members and hanged from the trestle of a bridge.

Now Memphis can add Tyre Nichols to the list of Black men murdered because of White supremacy that includes Dr. Martin Luther King in 1968 and my great uncle, Albert Gooden, in 1937. The only difference in these three murders is that Dr. King and my great uncle died by the hands of White men. Sadly, Tyre Nichols was murdered by 5 Black men whose father might have marched and protested with Dr. King or whose grandfather or great grandfather might have been in jail the same time as my great uncle, Albert Gooden.

Dr. Martin Luther King paid the ultimate price for trying to give Black men a chance to earn a decent wage and to get opportunities to work in jobs that includes being police officers. To have those murdering Black officers repay Dr. King's sacrifice by killing a young, Black, hardworking and respectable man is the biggest affront to the legacy of Dr. King and the advancement we, as a race of people, have achieved over these long, difficult years of striving for respect and equality.

BLACK HISTORY IS MADE EVERYDAY

Rosalind Burgin is the first African American President of the Buffalo Niagara Association of Realtors

Rosalind Burgin, the co-founder of MMB Realty Group LLC, has been named the first African American president of the Buffalo Niagara Association of Realtors (BNAR) in the organization’s 119-year history. Founded in 1904, today it is one of the largest real estate associations in the country.

“The Buffalo Niagara Association of Realtors are positioned for generational change,” said Ms. Burgin. “ Our members as change agents are ready to embrace thriving communities that leads to a stronger region.”

“As the President I hope to focus on empowering and encouraging realtor members to seek educational growth opportunities and be open to our changing demographics,” she continued. "I think we are positioned to embrace and demonstrate a commitment to a diverse and inclusive membership.”

Last month the Association’s two anti-racism videos created by its diversity, equity, and inclusion committee were showcased. BNAR is the first in the country to create anti-discrimination videos of this kind highlighting the kind of discrimination realtors of color often face in the profession when working in predominately White neighborhoods. The videos were shown to real estate agents and a host of public officials during a press conference and follow up discussion at the BNAR offices. Ms. Burgin, who sees the videos as an effort to raise awareness, said that at least having the conversation is where change will begin.

President Burgin was inaugurated to her one-year term on January 20.

-The MMB Connection-

“It’s been only two years since I joined Jamia 'Mia' Mootry and Tamika Murphy to establish the Mootry Murphy & Burgin Realty Group ( MMB Realty Group LLC) ,” said Ms. Burgin. “It’s been an exciting time despite the world’s challenges. I am thankful and proud that we have been able to help others rise as we grew the MMB family of realtors.

“I remain committed to the MMB way with a focus on helping individuals become homeowners and building generational wealth through real estate.”
