Buffalo for Bernie Sanders Opens Campaign Office Here The Buffalo for Bernie Sanders recently opened their campaign office at 404 Amherst Street. Bengal Pride: Buffalo State Launches Alumni Legacy Scholarship Buffalo State President Katherine Conway-Turner announced recently about the college’s new legacy scholarship, which aims to bring children of alumni living outside of New York State back to Buffalo State and Western New York.

The Bengal Pride Scholarship program will provide up to 10 scholarships of $7,500 annually to out-of-state students, effectively lowering tuition for recipients to in-state levels. The scholarship will be available starting in spring 2017.

The Colored Musicians Club of Buffalo, New York, Inc. Celebrates 99 Years of History

n February 3, 1917, the Colored Musicians Association of Buffalo, Musicians Local 533, was officially established in Buffalo, New York under the auspices of the American Federation of Musicians. This was after unsuccessful attempts by African-American musicians of that city to join Musicians Local 43 which had an official policy of segregation and discrimination. Buffalo thus became the eighth American city to have a “Colored” Musicians Union in the AFM.1 In 1953, W. P. Steeper published a thesis entitled, Civil Rights in the American Federation of Musicians in which he noted that at the time, there were 50 “Colored” Musicians Locals within the Federation.

His work was intended to be an exhaustive critique of the AFM in the perspective of the Federations own, “Bill of Rights: for its members. The first right stated was: “Membership should not be denied by discrimination based upon race, creed, color, sex, national origin or political affiliation.”

In Chapter 14 of his thesis, Mr. Steeper wrote: “There are some locals that will not accept Colored members.When the issue first arose, an attempt was made to resolve the problem by establishing subsidiary colored Locals. The subsidiary Local was subordinate to and under the control of the White Local.”

In 1941 when James Petrillo succeeded Joseph N. Weber as the AFM President, he did away with subsidiary locals and Colored unions became fully autonomous locals. For Buffalo, the significance of this was that Local #533 was no longer underneath the jurisdiction or control of Local #43. They were both constituted, chartered membership Locals in the AFM. The two were finally merged into one Union in the late 1960’s. Mr. Steepers thesis was one of

the first to press the issue of racism, racial discrimination and other disparities within an organization that was by its own standards, was supposed to protect the rights of its members. In 1964, the American Federation of Musicians President, Herbert Kenin, told the separate locals that the Federation had to desegregate or be in violation of the Civil Rights Act, scheduled to take effect on July 1, 1965. In 1969 after years of negotiations the two unions in Buffalo, 43 and 533, were merged into one, AFM Local 92 which exists until today.

Joseph Hodge: Buffalo’s First Black Settler Joseph Hodge escaped from slavery in the late 1700a and is believed to be Buffalo’s first non-Native American settler. He arrived a few years before many of the White settlers moved into modern day Buffalo. Hodge lived among and bartered with the Seneca.

He married an Indian woman and he and his wife would go on to operate a trading post and open one of Buffalo’s first taverns. Hodge also found work as a successful interpreter, and was known to have been fluent in the Seneca language. At a time when many African American were not allowed to learn to read or write, Hodge was a bilingual speaker and died a successful business man.

-Population GrowsIn 1816 there were 16 Black residents (nine listed as slaves) included among a Buffalo population of 400. By 1828 that number had grown to about 60. The Vine Street AME Church, the Michigan Street Baptist Church, the Colored Presbyterian Church and St. Philip’s Episcopal Church became the cornerstones of activity for a free life in the urban north for African Americans.

At the beginning of he Civil War the African American population in Buffalo numbered about 500; most were fugitive slaves or their descendants. Proximity to Canada – and to points West – made the City of Buffalo an important Underground Railroad station.

At the turn of the 20th century Black people flooded into the city from Alabama, Arkansas and Georgia, from Tennessee and the Carolinas.

90 Year History of The Lutheran Church of Our Savior

I

n 1925, a survey conducted by the Pastoral Conference of Buffalo with the view of locating a mission in their midst found that the cold spring section of Buffalo offered a wonderful mission opportunity and petitioned the Board for Black Missions to station a worker in Buffalo. A residence at 1424 Jefferson Avenue, corner of Woodlawn Avenue was offered for rent to this new mission. The mission opened on New Year’s afternoon with an informal reception followed by a brief service. On Sunday, January 3,1926, the first worship service and Sunday School class was inaugurated. Twelve people as-

sembled for this first service, which was held in the evening.

Among the eight children enrolled in the first Sunday School class were the late Kydson Powell, Jr., the late Marion (“Sis”) Powell, the late Howard (“Buddy”) Powell, and Margaret Martin. On September 4, 1927, eight members were received by the rite of confirmation and it was at this service that the name “The Lutheran Church of Our Savior” was adopted. On October 31, 1931, the property located at 94-96 Northland Avenue was purchased and on November 29, 1931, the corner stone was laid at 96 Northland Avenue. In June 1960 the

present House of Worship at 26 Brunswick Blvd was purchased from Trinity Old Lutheran Church congregation. The Lutheran Church of Our Savior is the only African American Missouri Synod church in the historic Hamlin Park District.

The year 2016 marks the

90th Anniversary of the founding of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior.

The British Methodist Episcopal Church: Black History in Canada and U.S.

T

WORSHIP THIS WEEK!

he recent discovery of the British Methodist Episcopal Church — once the center of Black religious and political life in Toronto for over 100 years — is a reminder that Black history in Canada is also Black history in the United States.

As the Toronto Star reported, the church — formerly part of the U.S.-based African Methodist Episcopal Church denomination founded in Philadelphia in 1794 with Mother Bethel AME — was founded in 1845 by a small group of African-Americans living in Toronto. Several Black families had pooled their money to buy the $55.70 tract of land on Chestnut Street. The institution became a center of the abolition movement, as Frederick Douglass likely spoke to the congregation, which welcomed Black refugees fleeing slavery and state-sponsored terrorism “down South” via the Underground Railroad.

This was a refugee crisis of America’s creation. Britain had abolished slavery in 1833, and Nat Turner’s 1831 rebellion led to a violent crackdown on Black people in Virginia, which prompted an exodus of enslaved Blacks into Canada by way of the Underground Railroad. In 1856, however, the Canadian AME ministers split from the mother church in the U.S. and renamed themselves the British Methodist Episcopal. The church wanted to align itself with Britain, which had abolished slavery.

In addition, with the increase in kidnappings by bounty hunters looking for enslaved fugitives, the church wanted to ensure the safety of Canadian ministers who traveled to the states for conferences.

The congregation moved locations in the 1980s, and the church was demolished to make way for a parking lot, its legacy forgotten and lost to ashes and rubble until last fall.

We Remember Malcolm X

“A people must understand their history…”

A

s we celebrate Black History Month, we should not forget that it was during this month, February 21 1965, that Malcolm X and as he was later known, El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, was brutally murdered as he got ready to speak inside New York’s famed Audubon Ballroom.

A People Must Understand Their History There are may lessons we can learn from Malcolm, one was his insistence that people of African descent (and also continental Africans) should constantly seek to understand their history. He once said in a speech: “I don’t think any of you will deny the fact that it is impossible to understand the present or prepare for the future unless we have some knowledge of the past. And the thing that has kept most of us – that is, the Afro-Americans – almost crippled in this society has been our complete lack of knowledge concerning the past. The number one thing that makes us differ from other people is our lack of knowledge concerning the past.”

Malcolm considered that educating oneself about African history was fundamental to one’s identity and as he pointed out: “If we don’t go into the past and find out how we got this way, we will think that we were always this way. And if you think that you were always in the condition that you’re in right now, it’s impossible for you to have too much confidence in yourself, you become worthless, almost nothing.” However, as Malcolm eloquently argued, knowledge of past achievements, contributions to human development, will tell a people that if they achieved such things in the past, they can achieve them again in the future. Again, to cite Malcolm directly, he said: “I have often reflected upon the new vistas that reading opened to me. I knew right there in prison that reading had changed forever the course of my life. As I see it today, the ability to read awoke inside me some long dormant craving to be mentally alive.

I certainly wasn't seeking any degree, the way a college confers a status symbol upon its students. My homemade education gave me, with every

additional book that I read, a little bit more sensitivity to the deafness, dumbness, and blindness that was afflicting the Black race in America.

Not long ago, an English writer telephoned me from London, asking questions.

One was, ‘What's your alma mater?’ I told him, ‘Books.’

You will never catch me with a free fifteen minutes in which I'm not studying something I feel might be able to help the Black man.”

African youth world-wide should heed Malcolm’s words in studying and reading. Those young men and women languishing in prison and in youth offending institutions should find inspiration in Malcolm’s life in that it was in prison that Malcolm educated himself and had the time to literally read the dictionary from A to Z during his seven years incarceration.

“One of the first things I think young people, especially nowadays, should learn is how to see for yourself and listen for yourself and think for yourself. Then you can come to an intelligent decision for yourself.”

We Remember Malcolm...

MalcolmX also known as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, was an African-American Muslim minister and human rights activist. To his admirers, he was a courageous advocate for the rights of Blacks, a man who indicted White America in the harshest terms for its crimes against Black Americans.

He has been called one of the greatest and most influential African Americans . He was born Malcolm Little to Louise and Earl Little in Omaha, Nebraska, on 19 May 1925.

His father died when he was six years old – the victim, he said, of a White racist group, the KKK. As the nation’s most visible proponent of Black Nationalism, Malcolm X’s challenge to the multiracial, nonviolent approach of the Civil Rights movement., helped set the tone for the ideological and tactical conflicts that took place within the Black freedom struggle of the 1960s.

However, after Malcolm’s assassination in 1965, King wrote to his widow, Betty Shabazz: “While we did not always see eye to eye on

methods to solve the race problem, I always had a deep affection for Malcolm and felt that he had the great ability to put his finger on the existence and root of the problem” .

On 21 February 1965, just a few weeks after his visit to Selma, Malcolm X was assassinated. King called his murder a “great tragedy” and expressed his regret that it “occurred at a time when Malcolm X was…moving toward a greater understanding of the nonviolent movement” He asserted that Malcolm’s murder deprived “the world of a potentially great leader.”

Today Malcolm X is revered as one of the most remembered human rights activist in the history of man.

Malcolm’s Beliefs Malcolm was a revolutionary Pan-Africanist and internationalist. He believed in Black people being involved in organization to rid themselves of all forms of oppression in order that they be in control of their reality.

Malcolm advocated “human rights” for African Americans, and internationalized the issue to the chagrin of the American government. In his own words he argued: “… we need new friends, we need new allies. We need to expand the civil rights struggle to a higher level – to the level of human rights. Whenever you are in a civil rights struggle ... you are confining yourself to the jurisdiction of Uncle Sam. No one from the outside world can speak out on your behalf as long as your struggle is a civil rights struggle.

n a night of polite performances, Kendrick Lamar was willing to sweat it out and make a statement.

People felt uncomfortable with Beyoncé having her dancers wear Black Panthers outfits during her Superbowl performance?

Lamar walked on stage in chains at the Grammy’s Monday in view of millions to give a fire and brimstone performance on this nation’s dark history.

By the time they unshackled and launched into a performance of “Alright,” as fiery as the bonfire blazing behind him, his stage had transformed. He ended debuting a new song. He stood alone because who possibly deserved to stand next to him?

-BeyonceWith references to the Black Panther Party, Malcolm X and The Black Lives Matter Movement, Beyoncé used her massive mainstream audience for her Super Bowl halftime show to deliver a pointed and powerful political message. But that message is now being twisted and perverted by police unions with an interest in preserving the unjust, anti-black status quo.

During the live performance of her latest song, "Formation," Beyoncé was backed by Black women dancers wearing black berets and black leather that clearly invoked the Black Panther Party.

In a backstage photo tweeted out by the racial justice activist group The Dream Defenders, the dancers were shown raising their fists in the traditional black power salute.

Her dancers held a handmade sign that read "Justice 4 Mario Woods" -- a reference to a 26-year-old black man who had been shot and killed by police in San Francisco just a few miles from

the Super Bowl site. (Woods allegedly had a knife and refused to drop it, so the cops shot him 20 times. An autopsy showed that six shots hit Woods in the back).

None of this should be controversial. Beyoncé and Kendrick are seeking not only to make music but to make a difference -- as have generations of musicians and other cultural icons before them. In the 1960s and 70s, Black artists like Nina Simone, Paul Robeson, Marvin Gaye and countless others risked their lives and careers to be a voice of the people and speak up about the racial injustices in the nation. They had a level of fearlessness that made the “mainstream” uneasy but it made them listen. To quote the late, great Nina Simone: “An artist’s duty is to reflect the times.”

“400 Years of African-American History Act” Is Introduced in Congress

A

group of lawmakers has introduced legislation to recognize the 400 years of Africans in America. In a nation whose citizens do not know their history–where Black people know little of their millennia of existence before slavery, and whites know absolutely nothing about Black people aside from negative media imagery—this legislation is significant and something we must examine carefully.

The legislation, named the 400 Years of African-American History Act, is sponsored by U.S. Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, Congressmen Bobby Scott, Don Beyer and Congressional Black Caucus Chair G.K. Butterfield, as WVECreported. Co-sponsors of the legislation include Congressmen Randy Forbes and Scott Rigell of Virginia, and civil rights veteran Congressman John Lewis, with support from the NAACP and the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights.

The act would establish a commission to plan activities and programs in 2019, coinciding with the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Africans in America. Further, the commission would focus on the resilience and contribution of African-Americans, and acknowledge the pain and harm caused by slavery and racial discrimination.

“One of the things that I always stress in my classes… is that African-American history is American history,” Asst. Prof. Andrew W. Kahrl, who teaches African-American studies and II Cncl history at the University of Virginia, told the Cavalier Daily. “This -Part is not something that is some sort of an addendum or something that is separate and apart from what we traditionally think of as so called ‘American history.’”

The legislation is similar to others that have established commissions for English and Hispanic heritage, the 400th anniversary of Jamestown, Virginia and the 450th anniversary of St. Augustine, Florida. “If English lives matter, if Latino lives matter, then African-American lives matter, and they mattered every day since the landing” of the first Africans in America, Sen. Kaine said at a press conference, adding that the country would be “unrecognizable and much the poorer” without the contributions of African-Americans. “The story has a lot of pain to it, but it’s a story that has to be told to commemorate that we as a nation – had it not been for 400 years of AfricanAmerican history – would be absolutely unrecognizable. What we hope to do with this bill is engage in something we should do to tell the story in a different way than it may have been told 50 to 100 years ago,” Kaine added.

“It’s a story that we need to continue to talk about, study and frankly get better at,” Sen. Warner said. “And I can’t think of a better opportunity than creating a federal national commission that would focus from both the [historical perspective], but equally important, looking forward about how we create a more perfect union that includes all Americans.”

“The commission established by this legislation will play a key role in recognizing, understanding, and celebrating the resilience and contributions of African-Americans in the history of our nation,” said Hilary Shelton, director of the NAACP Washington Bureau, noting the commission would also create an opportunity to discuss the growing influence of Black people in American life.

COLORED MUSICIANS CONTINUED 1917, another African-American organization was created in nearby Niagara Falls by a number of gentlemen led by Moorfield Storey, Mary White Ovington, Ida B. Wells, William Edward Burghardt Du Bois and others. Calling itself The Niagara Movement, with the stated mission of this group was, “to ensure the political, social and economic equality of rights for all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination”.3 The name was eventually changed to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People commonly referred to as the NACCP and is the oldest and most widely recognized civil rights organization. The fact that this occurred in the immediate vicinity of Buffalo and Western New York is significant because it suggests that this particular period, less than fifty years since the Emancipation was signed, was rife with racial hatred and African-American lives were lived in peril. It is important to note that the framers of the Niagara Movement included prominent white Americans as well as African-Americans and that in fact, its initial membership was limited to professionals as business person and influential persons such as teachers, physicians, ministers, business people etc.

A typical group of the less prestigious segment of society comprised Buffalo’s AfricanAmerican musicians who were performing at dances, church socials, and parties. Usually common laborers, as well as legitimate dance halls were under the jurisdiction of the AFM when it came to live music performances, and they were often segregated and off limits to non-white musicians.

Buffalo was also the scene of anti-Negro riots precipitated by the claims of Irish laborers that Negro laborers were depriving them of employment.5 It is significant that Local #533 kept careful records of dues, performance rosters, traveling musicians, club owners and dispute concerning entrepreneurs as well as musicians. Through these records, which have been preserved for benefit of future researchers, it will be possible to reconstruct a more complete picture of the evolution of the Colored Musicians Club of Buffalo (CMC) and its parent organization Local #533.

Haiti Swears in Senate Chief Jocelerme Privert as Provisional President The last time there was an Haiti’s lawmakers selected an opposition senator who served as interior minister under former President JeanBertrand Aristide as interim president on Sunday, in a move aimed at filling a power vacuum threatening stability in the Caribbean nation.

Senate chief Jocelerme Privert, 63, was sworn in on Sunday as the provisional president. His main task will be to quickly organize fresh elections.

Haiti canceled a runoff presidential election in January amid often violent protests over alleged fraud in the first round and after the opposition candidate boycotted the vote.

Privert vowed to complete the elections and hand over to an elected president by May 14.

“I will engage in dialogue with all sectors to get the country out of crisis,” he said.

Former President Michel Martelly finished his term a week ago with no elected successor.

A major challenge for Privert will be to reach an agreement about who can participate in the election, with many opposition parties rejecting the October results that led to a two-

man race between opposition candidate Jude Celestin and ruling party favorite Jovenel Moise.

Bengals Fight For A Playoff Birth In Last Weekend Of Regular Season

The Buffalo State Bengals go into the final weekend of SUNYAC (State University of New York Athletics Conference). Needed are 2 wins at home to move in to the SUNYAC playoffs next week.

The Bengals season has been 1 of highs and lows. After winning the Coles invitational tournament in November and the Coaches vs Cancer Tournament @ Lehman College in December, the Bengals were well on their way to a stellar season.

However injuries to key players, Leon Moise, Luke Jenkins, Derrick Fernandez and Jordan Glover in January, have put Buff State in the unenviable position of facing 2 teams in 1 of the toughest Div. 3 basketball conferences in the nation, shorthanded! 6 of the Bengals 9 conference losses have been by 4 points or less. 2 of those losses were by 1 point to Cortland (62-63 and 83-84). And while weaker teams would have folded up their tent after conference losses of 1, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 4 points, the Bengals have used these tough losses as fuel to spur them on for this coming weekends games vs New Paltz and Oneonta.

With 1 week left Buff State stands in 7th place at 7 wins and 9 losses. Suny-Oneonta is 1 game ahead of Buff State at 8-8. Both teams have 2 games left this coming Friday and Saturday (2/1920). The Bengals host Suny- New Paltz Friday night, while Oneonta visits Suny-Fredonia Friday night. Provided that the Bengals win Friday, then they will go into Saturdays season finale vs Oneonta (who could be either 9-8 or 8-9, depending on what they do vs Fredonia), with a record of 8-9. That would put Buff State either even or 1 game behind Oneonta (depending on what Oneonta does Friday). A Buff State win Friday would make Saturdays game a “winner take all” game. If the Bengals win Saturday they could finish tied with Oneonta at 9-9. However the 1st SUNYAC tiebreaker is “head to head” competition. And since Buff State beat Oneonta at Oneonta on 1/22 (by the score of 82-73), another win Saturday would give the Bengals a 2-0 head to head record vs Oneonta thus securing the final playoff spot.

Why We Requested Legal Counsel

Scalia Overruled...We’re Equal After All

C

ontrary to what the Buffalo News portrayed as the actions of petulant adults, who “lack seriousness about education”, the Board minority’s request for legal counsel was the result of thoughtful deliberation and ongoing questioning of a pattern of behavior that is detrimental to the District and to our students. The following memorandum (that was accompanied by exemplary documents) is the latest in a long succession of correspondence sent to members of the Board and the administration. It was also sent to the Buffalo News, which decided to ignore the substance of this memo in the editorial even though a news story appeared on the subject the day before.

For more than a year the minority members of the Board have written repeatedly to express our serious concerns about the behavior of Board member Paladino. You (Mr. Sampson) and other members of the Board appear incapable or unwilling to address Mr. Paladino’s behavior and/or actions that ultimately impact the integrity of this Board and expose the Board and the District to litigious actions

by District staff and community members. There are numerous documented instances of a pattern of behavior by Mr. Paladino that is associated with legal actions filed against this Board and against him personally. We have submitted numerous requests to you, as Board President, and to the Board as a whole to take a stance in opposition to this behavior.

The Board majority’s refusal to address Mr. Paladino’s actions, indeed the silence of the Board as a corporate body sends the message that we all condone Barbara Seals this behavior, even as members of the minority are consistently vocal in our Nevergold opposition. We are compelled to go on the record once again, not just to refute the statements, actions and behavior of Mr. Paladino but to request that the members of the minority have special counsel assigned to indemnify and defend us; to support the exercise of our fiduciary responsibility, to oppose attempts to disenfranchise our constituents by silencing our voices and assist us in matters where our interests/concerns diverge from those of the Board majority.

The incident that has prompted this letter and request occurred at the special board meeting of January 6, 2016. This meeting was called to consider an employment matter involving an employee who has a human rights complaint against the Board and Mr. Paladino, as an individual.

This complaint was initiated by the employee in February or March 2015 and amended on at least one occasion following publicly expressed egregious remarks made by Mr. Paladino about the employee. In the open session of the January 6th meeting, Mr. Paladino made statements about the employee, using her name and describing “her incompetency on the job”. He alleged that “She has cost the District hundreds of thousands of dollars in letting statutes go by. She has cost the District, God know what issues that we have not even seen. She has failed to disclose, she has failed to cooperate with the Superintendent, and she is a person who does not rise up to the standard of ability that we would expect for a General Counsel in this School District….”

He said much more aimed at the minority board members. These remarks are a matter of public record in the Board minutes and also on a video recording of the meeting.

Dr. Harris-Tigg did not attend this meeting. However, Ms. Belton-Cottman, Ms. Kapsiak and Dr. Nevergold all spoke in opposition, citing the impropriety of these remarks; the potential for them to be construed as retaliatory; the unfairness of making unsubstantiated allegations and the inappropriate behavior of a Board member ignoring the potential legal damage he created. No other Board member tried to intervene or speak to the damaging and inappropriate nature of Mr. Paladino’s actions.

We believe that the continued tolerance of this behavior leaves the Board minority vulnerable and totally at the whim of the bloc of 5 and also puts the District at risk. Our concerns regarding this matter have been ignored. At the end of December 2015, costs incurred as a result of the legal actions against this Board exceeded $225,000. A number of cases are pending and the legal fees continue to accrue. Consequently we believe that the Board is threatened collectively and individually and the District is jeopardized by legal actions which result from actions that we have not initiated and do not condone. On May 12, 2015, the minority members submitted, for the record, a request to be represented by special counsel. Given the foregoing and what we anticipate will be ongoing exposure to legal liabilities, not of our creation, we are submitting this request again.

We are submitting this request to be placed on the Board agenda for discussion at the February 10th meeting.”

To no one’s surprise the “discussion” was one sided as the majority members assumed a familiar posture of silence. Again, they not only refuse to address the obvious costs incurred by the District when the corporate Board is sued in tandem with the Board member whose actions are responsible for the legal action. But, they ignore the bigger picture of the “LESSON” their in-action teaches our students.

We have a Code of Conduct that is supposed to operationalize the NYS Dignity for All Students Act. We teach children that it’s wrong to bully and it’s also wrong to allow a bully to get away with his bad behavior. In the language of anti-bully education, we encourage them to be an “upstander” and to speak up about the harmful behavior they observe. However, the Board majority’s behavior communicates the message to students “Do as I say. Not as I do.” The Board minority is working to be exemplars of “up-standers” and our request for support from a legal professional is responsible and necessary.

ne day, the funeral procession of a man who had been an avowed enemy of the Prophet Muhammad wound its way past him and some of his comrades. They were alarmed when he stood at attention, and they protested. The Prophet explained to them that regardless of who has fallen, we should always show respect for the Angel of Death, who, ultimately, comes for us all.

While it would be undignified and beneath us to dance on the grave of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, an avowed enemy of the black, the brown, the poor and the female...an unabashed crusader for the continued tyranny of white men, there are limits. It would have been sufficient for President Obama to thank Scalia for his service, announce that condolences have been sent to the family, and that plans are underway to announce his successor - and leave it at that. A brief statement while flags fly at half-staff would not have breached presidential decorum. But to hear our brother refer to “Nino” Scalia as a “brilliant legal mind with an energetic style, incisive wit, and colorful opinions”...to hear him call his family a beautiful symbol of a life well lived,” and to thank them for “sharing Justice Scalia with our country...” was revolting. Scalia used his position on the court to oppose any attempt to create a more equitable and inclusive America, and under the guise of prinSabirah cipled jurisprudence, used its authority to protect and preserve not the rule of Muhammad law...but the rule of white men.

We were told many years ago by the Honorable Elijah Muhammad that the patrols who began as slave catchers, the sheriffs who participated in mob lynchings, and the members of the Ku Klux Klan would take off the white robes and don the black robes of judges, and the blue uniforms of police, and the well pressed suits of prosecutors and DA’s and infiltrate every level of government “administration.” Antonin Scalia didn’t bother to change robes. He just slipped the black one over the white one. As teary eyed Republicans are claiming right now, he was their “go to guy.”

Indeed. He was right there in 2012 to speak in favor of Arizona’s harassment of immigrants.

“In the first 100 years of the Republic,” he said, “the states enacted numerous laws restricting certain classes of aliens...” He lists examples of such undesirables: “convicted criminals, indigents, persons with contagious diseases, freed blacks.” In December of last year, regarding the University of Texas Affirmative Action case, Scalia spoke on behalf of “those who contend that it does not benefit African Americans to get them into the University of Texas, where they don’t do well, as opposed to having them go to a less advanced school, a slower track school where they do well.”

In league with his conservative (translation: racist) accomplices on the court, he did much to sabotage the political empowerment of said despicable, dumb blacks. Together, they have gutted the Voting Rights Act and upheld gerrymandering that benefits Republicans (Vieth v Jubelirer), and opposed it when it appeared to benefit Democrats (Harris v Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission), further decimating black voting strength.

Scalia didn’t trifle with clandestine efforts at sabotage. He preferred the in-your-face style of insult...like calling the protection of voting rights a “perpetuation of racial entitlement.” When spitting his rage at the court’s decision to uphold the medicaid expansion portion of “Obamacare,” this “brilliant legal mind” referred to it as “pure applesauce,”and “interpretive jiggery pokery.” In this scenario, It’s Chief Justice John Roberts who deserves that description. While Scalia charged like the wolf, this sly fox understood that a continuous, unbroken assault on the President’s accomplishments would blow their cover. Striking down his every effort without the occasional red herring would erode the court’s only source of power: the illusion of legitimacy.

Scalia, Roberts, Alito, Breyer and Thomas have huddled to paralyze herculean achievements

by President Obama in the areas of climate change and immigration reform. In the area of women’s rights, as lower court rulings and male dominated legislatures restrict women’s reproductive choices, and mandate forced ultrasounds, scripted scoldings and vaginal probes, the Conservative crew stands ready to back them up. In 2010, Scalia made his intentions clear, saying that abortion is not a liberty protected by the constitution. -And to be clear...there is no attempt here to support or decry the practice of abortion. Just as it is with these “legislators,” abortion is not the issue.

These miscreants are also determined to continue paying a woman less money for doing the same job as a man. The issue - is that after a long time of being suppressed, female energy is making a comeback. Women, who were a significant part of the coalition that elected and re-elected Barack Obama, keep clamoring for fair pay, overall respect, and a seat at the decision making table.

Therefore, they too offer a challenge to white male tyranny, and must be stopped. Antonin Scalia said in 2010 that “the constitution doesn’t prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender. If the current society wants to outlaw discrimination by sex, you have legislatures.”

It’s one thing for us to stand in silent respect as the passing of a life re-asserts the irresistible and irrevocable will of the Giver of life. It’s quite another for us to fall all over ourselves kissing the casket of Antonin Scalia, like slaves wailing loudly over the grave of massa. In the President’s defense, to say that he was brilliant, energetic, incisive and colorful isn’t decisively positive, nor does it invalidate the fact that Scalia employed all of those traits to profane the very notion of jurisprudence. In describing his as “a life well lived,” surely the President meant that he used every means at his disposal to accomplish his purpose: the preservation of white supremacy and therefore left us a powerful blueprint for how to cultivate and activate our own resources for Continued Page 16

“Beat The Champ” Airs From Kerns Avenue Bowling Center “Beat The Champ” will roll from Kerns Avenue Bowling Center at 163 Kerns Street on Saturday, February 20 at 4 p.m. with an encore on Sunday at 11 p.m.

The weekly bowling competition, showcasing the best bowlers in Western New York, will include Moe Davidson, Jr. of Buffalo and an interview with Kerns owner Dan Adams.

Shows #5 through #8 were recorded at the Kerns Avenue Bowling Center in January.

Show #7 will feature returning champ Brandon Korczykowski who takes on Davidson.

In addition to bowling at Kerns, Moe also bowls with the ABest Roofing League; Moe Davidson Elite Memo-

rial; and National Travelers Bowling League. He has been bowling since the age of 3 and bowled his first 300 game at age 16. He was scouted to bowl for Erie Community College but chose to focus on academics. With an average of 215, Davidson posted a 300 high score 14 times in his bowling career to date.

The young bowler is a 2009 NYSPHAA Section 6 championship team member and 2014-15 National Travelers Bowling League division and national champion.

Unbound by illusion, they act on the true premise of the Supreme Court, proclaimed by Chief Justice Roger B. Taney in 1857. Barack Obama, like Dred Scott and any other “being of an inferior order,” has “no right which the white man is bound to respect.”

Their every insult is a punch to our collective gut. They may indeed rob the beleaguered populace of this unexpected opportunity. But the death of Antonin Scalia screams out a reminder of truths the beleaguered often forget: we’re equal after all.

Not one of us...not even a well connected, black robed old man with a great title, job security and fantastic medical insurance can call back the breath that God has taken away. Like Scalia, the structures that have been ensconced to maintain the rule of a few and the heartless subjugation of most - have no perpetuity in a universe that’s structured on justice, equity, and fair dealing.

Black History Month Reading List In 1926, Dr. Carter G. Woodson began Negro History Week in February to acknowledge the birthdays of two men whom he admired – Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas. One hundred years later we are still honoring Dr. Carter G. Woodson with the celebration of Black History Month during February. We must remember however, that Dr. Woodson wanted us to use February to review what we have learned all year and not to begin and end the study of Black History only in February. Let’s get started with these readings and build a background for study.

•Miseducation of the Negro by Dr. Carter Woodson. This book was written in 1933 but it reads current for today. Dr. Woodson distinguishes the difference between education and training.

•Introduction to African Civilization by John G. Jackson. A panoramic view from dawn of prehistory to modern Africa.

•African Origin of Civilization: Myth or Reality by Cheikh Anta Diop. Answers the question with historical, archeological and anthropological evidence that the civilization of ancient Egypt is African.

Introduction to Black Studies by Maulana Karenga. A text for the discipline of Black Studies.

•Africa’s Gift to America by J.A. Rogers. From the African background to the contributions of African Americans in America.

•Destruction of Black Civilization: Great Issues of a Race From 4500 B.C. to 2000 A.D. by Chancellor Williams. A comprehensive analysis of the African past with a suggested plan for the future.

•African Origins of the Major Western Religions by Yosef ben-Jochannan. The African influence on Christianity, Judaism and Islam.

•Nile Valley Contributions to Civilization by Anthony T. Browder. Understanding the Nile Valley Civilization of Ancient Egypt and its role in future civilizations.
