Rochester Responds to Racism and a Police Chief's Resignation Police Chief La'Ron Singletary (left )announced that he was retiring from the force as protests continued.

S

everal days ago Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren was praising the Rochester Police for using restraint and deploying far fewer officers at one of the city’s large and intense, yet peaceful, demonstrations over the March death of Daniel Prude, a Black man. Prude died by asphyxiation after being restrained by officers. Much of the encounter was caught on video.

On Tuesday Police Chief La'Ron Singletary announced that he was retiring from the force as protests continued. Two members of the Rochester Police Department command staff announced that they were also resigning.

Mayor Warren confirmed the stunning development.

"The chief was not asked to give his resignation, because I do believe he is giving his very best," said Warren, who promoted Singletary to the post in April 2019.

She admitted that the exodus of senior leaders, especially at this time, would be “difficult” in terms of finding an interim replacement for police chief.

In a statement issued Tuesday afternoon, Warren said Singletary will remain in charge of the department through the end of the month, and she will meet with the City Council to "chart a path forward.”

"While the timing and tenor of these resignations is dif-

ficult, we have faced tough times before. We will get through this together," Warren said.

Warren ordered the suspension -without pay-of seven police officers who were involved in Prude's arrest last week after video footage of the encounter was released.

As NPR reported : "Warren said she was told that Prude had overdosed in police custody, and did not see video of the encounter until Aug. 4.

"She said she has since ordered Singletary to provide her with video from any in-custody death or use of force incident within 24 hours."

In the days since the footage surfaced, community members have accused Singletary of covering up the circumstances of Prude's death and called for him as well as the mayor to resign.

-Six MonthsFor almost six months the Rochester Police Department chose not to release a videotape showing the heart wrenching circumstances surrounding the death of 41-year-old Daniel Prude while being restrained by police in the middle of the street naked with a so-called "spit-hood" over his head as his head was held to the ground.

This fight however is on domestic soil and this time the enemy is systemic, institutional racism and police brutality. I empathize with the peaceful protesters and fully understand their anger, pain, and demands for systemic change. I’m particularly proud of this city’s young people for coming out and dedicating their time and energy to the cause. So where do we go from here? We must continue to fight for what’s right because it’s the only way to gain justice for Mr. Prude and for all those who have died due to senseless violence.I strongly believe in the work we’ve begun and I still believe and continue to be commitI strongly believe in the work we’ve begun and I still believe and continue to be committed to combating the ills in our society.

This is Rochester; a city known for its resilience, a city where hopes and dreams are still within reach. Pullman Porters

The Black History Behind Labor Day Labor Day was founded after the Pullman Strike of 1894, when President Cleveland was hoping to gain political allyship by honoring railroad workers. However, the story about the involvement of the Black Pullman porters in the labor movement is not always told.

“Pullman porters were Black men who worked in the train cars attending to their mostly White passengers, performing such tasks as shining shoes, carrying bags, and janitorial services. During this period, this profession was the largest employer of Blacks in the nation and constituted a significant portion of the Pullman company’s workforce…” writes Theodore R. Johnson.

Despite Black porters being a significant part of the Pullman’s workforce, they were not allowed to strike and were also denied access to the labor union.

Being excluded from the right to even fight for fair work and wages, the Black railroad workers formed their own union, the Brotherhood of the Sleeping Car Porters, which was the first Black union in America. A. Philip Randolph was the first president of the union, and he was also the brains behind the first March on Washington. The march Continued Page 14

First Fruits Food Pantry Offers Free Food Giveaway Every Tuesday and Saturday at Lincoln Memorial

he First Fruits Food Pantry/Market at Lincoln Memorial United Methodist Church, 641 Masten, relaunched last Saturday with more space, larger freezer capacity, and additional healthy food options free to the community every Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

“Food insecurity has become a national issue,” said pantry coordinator Rita Hubbard-Robinson of the Buffalo Center for Health Equity. She was speaking on Power 96.5 WUFO’s Buffalo on Fire talk show which aired live from the Pantry last Saturday.

“There are 54 million people in this country who are food insecure,” she noted.

“We want to make sure we are prepared for what’s coming this winter…

Well stocked, First Fruits offers “shoppers” an excellent choice of life sustaining fresh foods and dry goods residents need and want.

There are no forms to fill out, no proof of income or residency etc. Just the blessing of good food!

The Few, The Proud, New Report: Georgia Wrongfully Purged The White According to a recent article in the New York Times, since the Marines first admitted African-American troops in 1942, the last military service to do so, only 25 have obtained the rank of general in any form. Not one has made it to the top four-star rank, an honor the Marines have bestowed on 72 white men. Six African-Americans reached lieutenant general, or three stars. The rest have received one or two stars, the majority in areas like logistics, aviation and transport, areas from which the Marine Corps does not choose its senior leadership.

Out of 82 Marine generals overall today, there are six African-American brigadier generals and one AfricanAmerican major general.

200,000 Voters, Many in the Atlanta Metro Area, From Its Rolls A seven-year investigation of voter suppression in Georgia has found that the state likely removed 200,000 voters from its rolls who were, in fact, eligible to vote. The voters whose registrations were removed were also overwhelmingly concentrated in the counties comprising the Atlanta Metro area, according to initial findings released last week.

Conducted by the Palast Investigative Fund, which specializes in data journalism, and released by the ACLU of Georgia, the report reviewed more than 300,000 registered voters whom the state had purged from its rolls. Their voter registrations had been canceled because officials concluded the people living at those addresses had moved and did not change the address on their voter registration.

Community Health Fair at Agape AME Agape AME Church and the Erie County Department of Health are partnering to host a Community Health & Wellness Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 19 at Agape AME Church located at 224 Northland Avenue.

F.A.T.H.E.R.S. Celebrating 20 Years of Advocating for Our childen

W

hen two stray bullets shattered one of the windows at School 61, Leonard (Lenny) Lane and a group of neighborhood men went into action and formed the F.A.T.H.E.R.S. Group which stands for Fathers Armed Together to Help Education, Restore and Save Lives. Their primary purpose was the children’s safety.

That was 20 years ago.

On August 30 they celebrated their milestone anniversary at the Johnny B. Wiley Stadium, where they were honored for their work in the community.

Over the years they’ve taken their volunteer efforts inside the school as well making sure students are fed and acting as mentors. They have also been responsible for helping to bring about physical changes linked to safety like a new traffic light on Leroy and a crosswalk. Most recently they have advocated for new school one cameras - just another tool to keep the children safe says co-founder Lane.

The F.A.T.H.E.R.S. are also an active part of the Peacemakers coalition of anti-violence community-based organizations.

Their “Toys for Tots” free Christmas toy give away and celebration has been highly successful over the years and is widely supported by area businesses, individuals, churches, and civic organizations. In addition, they have helped thousands of young people through back-to-school giveaways; job fairs; Unity Weekends; Dog Days of Summer; Read to Succeed; an escort service at the Galleria Mall; and the continued support and protection of our community's most vulnerable assets, our children.

Attorney, Supporter of Eric Martin Hold Press Conference, Protests Continue The law firm of Feroleto Law and supporters of Eric Martin Jr., held a press conference recently at the Main Court Building to make clear that legal action was being taken in the wrongful arrest of an innocent 30-year-old Black man, Eric Martin, Jr. 30, at a Speedway establishment in Kenmore this past July. The arrest and physical confrontation with the Tonawanda police took place in front of Mr. Martin’s wife and 8 year old son around an alleged stolen lottery ticket (Challenger August 19,2020). The Martins recently purchased a home around the corner from Speedway. Longtime family friend, political activist and former Buffalo City Councilmember Charley H. Fisher represented Mr. Martin and his family at the

"At our school, we saw and heard a lot of negativity. We saw how easy people got into arguments and fights. Stuff that caused a lot of confusion, you know, that he say, she say talk!

We saw how easy it was for students to let other students get them loud, angry and out of control. A lot of times over stupid stuff. Even some of our female friends had us arguing with each other!

"When instigators and haters start running their mouths, making you feel like you just got punked off, because of your pride, you be ready to fight! You're not thinking about the consequences or even where you are! (If you don't learn how to kill your anger, that anger could end up getting you killed) So we made a pact between the three of us. We agreed that we would not let anyone cause us to get loud, angry or fight in our school. We agreed that if something happened negative, we would get together privately and deal with it as kings and brothers. If we gonna fight… We gonna to fight to lead and succeed, we're not going to fight to bleed!

"Rev. Coplin's program helped us so much. When we learned about (Speak Life Twice), it helped build our bond as brothers. We plan to go back to our school, to inspire other students, male and female to form a bond like we did. It works, so we want to spread it, in our schools and in the community!"

President and CEO of the Community Action Black Students Are Also Dying Organization L. Nathan Hare Set to Retire From COVID 1619

P

resident and CEO of the Community Action Organization of Western New York (CAO), L. Nathan Hare, has announced plans to retire after serving the anti-poverty agency for 18 years.

Hare will continue in his post until CAO’s Board, led by the Honorable Craig D. Hannah, completes a national search for his successor. L. Nathan Hare: "Keeper of the Culture" The Board has retained Catapult Executive Consulting of Buffalo, NY, to assist with the search.

Hannah credits Hare for developing CAO into one of the largest social service agencies in the area and one of the nation’s most successful community action programs.

“Nate has served our community with the utmost care and respect, often putting himself last,” Hannah said. “He has led the agency to tremendous financial success, with over 800 employees, and serving nearly 50,000 individuals each year. Nate is the true servant leader, activist, and anti-poverty leader our community deeply needs. We will miss him as the leader of CAO, however, I know his life’s work will continue beyond his current role.”

Hare is a lifelong resident of the City of Buffalo and has worked in youth employment, youth training and education, foster care, social services, and juvenile justice for more than 40 years. He is proud of how far CAO has come since he became CEO in 2002 and attributes his success to his staff who join him in empowering people every day to improve their own circumstances.

“When you truly care about your community, you can move mountains and make an impact in people’s lives,” Hare said. “Hurdles only become another obstacle to jump over. In this spirit, CAO will continue to fulfill its mission of working for those in need.”

Hare has served as the leader of CAO since 2002 – beginning his tenure at a time when the agency was in very difficult fiscal circumstances and was struggling to avoid collapse.

Under Hare’s leadership, the agency eliminated its operating deficit and erased its crushing debt, converting them into annual surpluses and significant lines of credit. Between 2002 and the present, he also increased the agency’s operating revenue from under $20,000,000 to well over $40,000,000. And Hare brought the agency’s employee headcount from just over 300 to well over 800. He also dramatically expanded the number and quality of program offerings that were aimed more broadly at eliminating the root causes of poverty and the lack of opportunity in Western New York. CAO continues to combat poverty by promoting self-sufficiency while increasing its efforts to provide programs that empower the underserved community’s opportunities.

In 2011, after several years of planning, preparation, and construction he led, Hare presided over the opening of St. Martin Village — a newly-built 60-unit affordable-housing development at the former German Roman Catholic Orphanage Home site. The St. Martin Village project turned a horrible blight on the community into an oasis of decent housing and opportunity for that East Side neighborhood.

hy do so many Black students associate being smart with acting White? Why are 41 percent of Black students in special education, but only six percent in gifted & talented and advanced placement? Why is the NBA 75 percent Black, but only 2 percent of the doctors are Black? Are Black students more confident in sports than in science?

What has been the impact of racism on the Black psyche?

Are many Blacks suffering from Post Traumatic Slavery Disorder? What exactly is meant by good hair and pretty eyes? What are four benefits of darker skin?

Why do Blacks only spend 3 percent of their income with Black businesses? Why is White wealth 10 times greater than Black wealth?

What months are White history taught? Black history?

What has been the impact on Black youth starting their history in 1619 on a plantation? What can Blacks learn from the Jewish community and their mantra: Never Forget? We know 6 million Jews were killed. Do you know how many Blacks died during slavery?

I believe the best way to address the use of the N word is to ask our ancestors. If we asked Nat Turner or Harriet Tubman, what would be their response? If we asked John Lewis when he marched from Selma to Montgomery, what would have been his response? If we asked Frederick Douglass on July 4, 1860, what would have been his response?

Concerning reparations, why did the United States government pay Asians and Native Americans and not African Americans? What is the cost of 5 million Africans working from 1619 to 1865?

Black youth must be taught how to overcome racism. What drives racism? Fear of differences and power. People who are secure are comfortable with differences.

Power concedes nothing without a struggle. Whites have no problems having conferences on diversity, equity, race relations and multiculturalism. What they do not want to discuss is the equitable distribution of power.

I would encourage you to give all your students grades l·5 and 6-12 COVID 1619. This will be the first generation that will not suffer from Post Traumatic Slavery Disorder.

(2019 marked the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in the Virginia colony in 1619 Ed Note: President Trump is reportedly threatening to defund California schools because he heard they would be implementing the New York Times’ Pulitzer-Prize winning collection 1619 Project into their curriculum.

HARE CAO continued dressing its complex and interrelated causes has made him one of the most sought-after experts in New York State’s War on Poverty. He has offered his profound perspective on public policy, poverty, youth development, and the state of the economy. He has hosted multiple public affairs programs including Living Now with L. Nathan Hare on WUFO-AM Radio, The World of Community Action on WBLK-FM Radio and Spectrum Cable, Living 4 the People on 91.3FM WBNY Radio, and Think Again with L. Nathan Hare on WWKB-AM Radio.

Hare will continue his work in the community as an antipoverty leader, activist, and educator, and will continue to empower the vulnerable and unheard. He is hopeful for what the future will bring under new leadership at CAO.

The Bills signed defensive back Tre Davis White and offensive Dion Dawkins to lucrative extensions. Tre’s contract has a guaranteed 55 million dollars out of a total 70 Million Dollar deal. That’s rather ironic considering the Bills let defensive back Stephon Gilmore leave for New England for less money given White.

Josh’s football IQ must improve in order to reach a 9 -7 record. If Allen’s football IQ does not improve the Bills will finish with a 7 – 9 record. Josh has all the

weapons needed on offense with Stefon Diggs joining the wide receivers. Dawson Knox must step up his game.

Keep an eye out for former Akron University running back, now transformed into a tight end, Reggie Gilliam.

Reggie could become a good blocking and receiving tight end for the Bills late in the 2020 season. The defense is all set and must continue to dominate for the Bills to truly be a key contender in 2020.

The Bills open up on Sunday at Bills Stadium and I see a 24 – 10 win by the Bills. The Jets are not ready for the season and Head Coach Adam Gase continues to upset his key players and most likely will be fired by the end of season. Gase’s hiring was another example of White Privilege in the NFL. City of Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency Request for Proposal The City of Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency (BURA) is seeking submittals from qualified Weatherization Providers (PROGRAM ADMINISTRATOR) to participate in the Buffalo Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) for the City of Buffalo. The overall goal of this initiative is to reduce energy costs for low-income households by increasing the energy efficiency of their homes, while ensuring resident health, safety and affordability. This program will be funded with HUD CDBG and CDBG-CV funds and is a continuation of the existing WAP program. However, as part of BURA’s restorative response to the COVID-19 pandemic, BURA is allocating additional resources to this program to help increase low income housing stability and affordability in Buffalo.

All organizations interested in applying to provide programs and services must meet the requirements specified in this Request for Proposals (RFP).

Respondents must have qualified staff on hand for this program and be ready to begin work on the anticipated contract start-up date of October 1, 2020. Alzheimer’s Association Invites Buffalo Area Residents To Join 2020 Walk To End Alzheimer’s Participants Will Continue to Walk as Individuals, Families or Small Teams on Sidewalks, Tracks and Trails across WNY in Wake of COVID-19 The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting Buffalo area residents to join the fight to end Alzheimer’s by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s® on Saturday, September 12, 2020.

The Buffalo Walk to End Alzheimer’s continues, but instead of hosting a large gathering, the Alzheimer’s Association is encouraging participants to walk as individuals or in small groups on sidewalks, tracks and trails across Western New York.

“This year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s will be everywhere,” said Wendy Vizek, vice president, constituent events at the Alzheimer’s Association.
