Buffalo last Saturday at the Jefferson Avenue Tops Market considered targets in the Rochester area as well before his deadly rampage at Tops Market on Jefferson Hon. Legislator LaMar Avenue Buffalo.

Monroe County Legislature President Sabrina LaMar in reference to the alleged Rochester connection in a statement : "It is a sobering realization that if Erie County Inmate #157103 had not changed his planned attack, it could have occurred right here in Rochester," (referring to the accused shooter by his inmate number rather than by name.) The victims could be even closer to home — our direct neighbors, family members, friends, or even you or me."

The source were posts credited to racist killer Payton Gendron’s Discord account that talked about potential targets for his cowardly assault at locations in Rochester which included several churches and a restaurant in predominantly Back neighborhoods had he not changed plans and come to Buffalo instead. Syracuse was also considered as a hit but bypassed for Buffalo.

WDKX — the call letters of which represent Frederick Douglass, Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X — signed on at 5:30 a.m. April 6, 1974, has been broadcasting around the clock ever since and remains a family business, with Andre Marcel Langston at the helm.

Mayor Malik D. Evans released the following statement on the Passing of Mrs. Langston "It is with heavy hearts that Shawanda and I extend our deepest condolences to the Langston family on the passing of their matriarch, Mrs. Gloria Langston. Gloria devoted herself to strengthening Rochester’s Black community for more than 50 years.

She was a pioneer on the Rochester landscape as a Black history researcher, a storyteller, and as owner and co-founder of WDKX-FM radio, Rochester’s first, and only Black-owned radio station.

Mrs. Langston distinguished herself as a strong advocate for healthcare, the education of children, and the cultivation of future leaders, serving as a model of community involvement and exceptional leadership.

Gloria was also a life-long learner, excellent orator, and apt teacher, all of which she demonstrated through her informative radio show “People to People,” her volunteerism for literacy, her awards from Toastmasters International, her sponsorship of the WDKX Minority Internship Program, and her founding of the Andrew Langston Center for Educational Excellence.

As we celebrate her life today, we are reminded of the cultural enrichment that WDKX has brought to our community and our region— the dream of both Gloria and Andrew Langston. We are keeping the Langston and WDKX families in our hearts and prayers.

Mrs. Langston's life's work, exquisite voice, activism, and elegance will forever be cherished in the hearts of the Rochester community.

Community Collectively Mourns Victims of Racist Fueled Massacre

W

hat are we supposed to do with all this anger?” cried Garnell Whitfield..."all this pain?”

That was the question the former Buffalo Fire Commissioner tearfully asked during a press conference several days ago in the wake of the tragic death of his 86-year-old mother, Ruth Whitfield. She was among 10 beloved community members who were stalked and murdered in cold blood during one of the nation’s worst acts of racist domestic terrorism.

It all took place last Saturday on a sunny afternoon at Tops Friendly Market on Jefferson Avenue in the heart of the Black community; the only major supermarket in what is otherwise a “food desert.”

Jimmie Smith echoed Whitfield’ pain during a broadcast on CNN when he spoke on behalf of Pearl Young, the 77-year-old steadfast member of Good Samaritan Church of God in Christ Who ran a food pantry for 25 years.

“We are upset, we are angry and we are hurt,” quoting scripture: “Test not My Anointed and my prophets no harm…”

“Some of us are tired of marching, tired of begging, this is evil…this is wicked” he said noting the killer’s plan was to take as many Black lives as he could. “He had an agenda but we’ve had enough. Buffalo is not a weak city. We are people of faith and prayer, just like Mother Pearl Young. " The grief has been unbearable for many. The suddenness of it all. The violence. The losses compounded by the fact that their loved ones, only crime was the color of their skin.

The 18-year-old racist, Payton S. Gendron, came to kill as many Black people as possible.

The shock and outrage over his evil attack was only compounded by the actions of law enforcement during his arrest after the shooting. An already traumatized community looked on in disbelief as police handled the killer more like he was a petty thief, rather than having just executed and live streamed a massacre.

NYS Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples, when

asked by a reporter what she thought of the community’s criticism of the way the situation was handled, recalled a recent incident her own nephew recently encountered during a traffic stop.

She said her nephew told her he was mortified to see him (the killer) untouched, hair and clothes in place. He said he was stopped for a traffic violation. He was slammed to the ground. And 'this guy' stood there like he stole a loaf of bread.

“So that does bring hurt to people because we experience this racist way services are delivered to us on a regular basis," said Peopes-Stokes. " So there's’ a lot room for hurt here. Not just for the loss of the families and what they’re going through; the fact is that racism is real and there’s still a lot of people who don’t want to admit that it’s real.”

Most felt that unlike Gendron, a Black shooter would not have survived the attack by law enforcement.

-Speaking Truth to PowerTo a person, almost every community member interviewed by local and national news media, spoke up and spoke out.

Articulate and on point, they did not mince words and kept it real. The news outlets in general were balanced in their reporting. A May 16 New York Times report is a perfect example. Kudos to all those who were interviewed: The suspect in the massacre, Payton S. Gendron, 18, embraced White supremacist ideas in a 180-page document posted online before the attack and named his top goal as killing as many Black people as possible, the authorities said. Mr. Gendron pleaded not guilty on Saturday night.

In the document, he said he would travel hours to Buffalo from the Southern Tier of New York. And while he wrote that he hoped for the toll to be much larger, the damage inflicted was immense.

“People are going to try to excuse it as this person not being from Buffalo — they’ll say things like ‘This is not who we are,’” said J. Coley, a Ph.D. student and instructor in the

This writer was granted an opportunity to speak with President Biden and I used that time to ask him if he would work with Congress to get the Tiahrt Amendment repealed. As most of you know, getting the amendment repealed was the life mission of the late Neal Dobbins. President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden assured me that they support the repeal of the law and will work with those in Congress to address it's repeal.

For those not yet informed, The Tiahrt Amendment was introduced to Congress by Rep. Todd Tiahrt of Kansas and was passed into law in 2003. What the law does is that require the federal government to destroy the names of all approved gun purchasers within 24 hours. The law also prohibits ATF from requiring gun dealers to submit their inventories to law

enforcement agencies. In addition, the amendment makes it harder for citizens to sue gun manufacturers when they flood an area with too many guns such as AR -15s and other non hunting and people killing weapons.

I spoke to the president to help represent MVP and the fervent dream of Neal Dobbins. President Biden asked one of his special agent to get my name, phone number and email address.

that we have a Black mayor. This is still a place of anti-Black racism.”

Buffalo has been marked by severe segregation for decades, offering an extreme example of the plight that Black people in many deeply divided urban centers have suffered. In 1991, one analysis found the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metro area was the fourth-most segregated in the United States; a study published two decades later found it ranked as the nation’s sixth-most segregated.

he Buffalo-Rochester District of the Western New York Annual Conference (WNYAC) of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church stands together in grief and mourning with the Buffalo community and the friends and family of the loved ones lost and injured after Saturday’s mass shooting. The anti-Black hatred that catalyzed this hate crime – this white supremacist act of terrorism – is no secret, no matter how much it may be ignored.

“People are angry, and that will never be okay. We refuse to turn a blind eye to these systemic institutions so deeply rooted in intentional violence against Black people,” says Rev. Paul J. Thomas, pastor of Bethel AME Church in Buffalo. “Our dedication to tearing down these barriers to peace and justice for all is unwavering, and we are committed to partnering with other local, regional, and national community leaders and organizations to take necessary action in securing just that.”

In Rochester, Rev. James C. Simmons, pastor of Baber AME Church shares that, “We stand unified with Buffalo, crying out against all the hurt, harm, and danger that tries to attack its Black residents and neighborhoods.

When the community cries out, the people pay attention, and that attention causes the action necessary to affect a permanent and positive change.”

My Child is in Prison May is the month known for several celebrations that you may recognize, depending upon your interests and concerns. There’s Cinco de Mayo, Jewish American Heritage Month, Memorial Day, and, of course, Mother’s Day. Here’s a Goggle quote for you: “Consumers are estimated to spend an average of $152 on mom, buying everything from flowers and jewelry to apparel and special outings (brunch, dinner, etc.). That's big bucks when you consider there are more than 85 million mothers in the United States alone.” Recently, I was looking for a video that I wanted to include in a presentation dealing with the number of children born in prison. I found several. I also found a few dealing with children of incarcerated parents. It occurred to me that there was literally nothing being said about mothers of incarcerated adult children.

I know a few mothers who have incarcerated adult children and I have met quite a few over the nearly 17 years that PRISONERS ARE PEOPLE TOO, INC. has been in existence. At the next monthly meeting of PRP2, I want you to meet them and to hear them talk about their lives and to understand how they have managed to deal with having their adult children behind prison bars. These women have dealt with the loss of a loved one that was totally unexpected. When Mothers look at their newborns and watch them grow over the years, their imprisonment is never an expectation. How have they dealt with years of loving that is coupled with years of expenses required for packages, travel, and legal fees? How have they dealt with the opinions of family and friends who may not understand how the criminal INjustice system works or fails to work? How does a mother deal with the unending love that may be challenged by an adult child’s incarceration which engenders feelings of shame and guilt?

These women have agreed to be vulnerable and honest in sharing stories of their lived experience. The .22 Caliber Killer And A Community Under Siege

O

nce again Buffalo finds itself in the national spotlight for domestic terrorism and racist attacks .

In 1980, another White supremacist descended upon our community. His name was Joseph Christopher, a former Army private, better known as the .22-caliber Killer.

In a reign of terror, he stalked the streets randomly killing innocent Black men; shooting them to death with a .22 caliber weapon.

The wave of shootings began on Sept. 24, 1980, and during the next 36 hours, three innocent Buffalo Black men and one Black boy were murdered with a .22 caliber sawed-off Ruger semi-automatic rifle concealed in a brown paper bag.

Glenn Dunn, 14 of Fougeron Street was the first victim of the racist, senseless attacks as he sat in a car in a parking lot on Genesee St.; followed by Harold Green 32, of LaSalle Avenue, then Emmanuel Thomas also 32 who was gunned down at the intersection of East Ferry and Zenner Streets both by a White man wielding a .22-caliber weapon.

According to witnesses they wore red paint to look like blood with bullet holes painted on their bodies. A brown pick-up truck along with the blue compact car carried a. mannequin’s head mounted on its hood.

Two of the killings took place in what was then known as “Klan territory” in the Bailey section of the city.

Oct. 8 and 9 the grisly remains of the two cab drivers, Parlor Edwards, 71, and Ernest Jones, 40, were discovered; their hearts ripped from their bodies.

Buffalo finally gained unwanted national attention. Then Karl Hand, a racist White supremacist announced plans for a Nazi rally on Martin Luther King’s birthday in downtown Buffalo. A crowd of some 5,000 people gathered on the steps of City Hall for a "Unity Day Rally," in opposition to Hand’s call, decrying racism and the killings.

The following day in Niagara Falls, Joseph L. McCoy, 43, was shot to death, again a case of a Black man shot by a White man .

But the attacks continued. Many in the Black community became armed and Black men began to mobilize.

Then in December, three Black men and a dark-skinned Hispanic were stabbed to death on the streets of Manhattan.

Two other Black men were stabbed but lived. Christopher was later convicted for two of the attacks.

McCoy and Green were each reportedly shot in the head at point blank range with the same .22 caliber automatic weapon.

He committed three additional attacks in Buffalo on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day (Albert Menefee, Larry Little, and Calvin Crippen), but all three victims survived.

Yet a police “slowdown” and officials reluctance to solicit and accept outside aid created a tense and uncomfortable situation. Officials insisted on making him a “Loner” - despite eyewitnesses to the E. Ferry St. killing who saw the assailant escape in a waiting blue car…the same car that was involved in the sick incident at Glenn Dunn’s funeral when two vehicles carrying White men invaded Dunn’s funeral shouting racial epithets as they drove by the crowded sidewalk outside St. Paul’s Missionary Baptist Church on

Christopher was eventually captured, tried and convicted (although the cases of the two cab drivers remained open and unsolved) and eventually sentenced to life in prison.

While imprisoned at the Attica Correctional Facility - in protective custody - Christopher claimed that he committed 13 killings. He died of cancer in prison on March 1, 1993, at the age of 37.

The store opened in 2003. We worked with community mothers and fathers to create a market that would provide great food in the heart of Buffalo’s Black community. Far Too Long, Hate/White Groups Have Been Allowed To Organize And Operate In This Country Dear Editor: For far too long, hate/white groups have been allowed to organize and operate in these United States without any consequences. On January 6th these groups, invited and emboldened by former President Trump, joined forces and conducted a violent insurrection on our country’s Capitol.

They breached the sanctity, safety and security of elected officials, officers and the general public.

This letter is a request that all hate/white supremacist groups in the U.S. be designated as “Domestic Terrorists.” I am well aware that in 2019, members of Congress previously discussed this issue, however these discussions have not appeared to have gained much traction. We have no real idea how many of our law enforcement officers, military, elected officials actively participate in these violent and destructive organizations. We also do not know how much money they are funneling into their coffers. They are a danger to people of color, Jews, LGBT community, immigrants and others they believe should be eliminated. Most of them have been raised to hate and they are not going to change or step back as long as they are allowed to operate year after year.

I am an 85 year old Black female who has been aware of these hateful groups all of my life. They have trained with their guns in the mountains, hills, back woods calling themselves Militia and Patriots. I have always been aware that their main targets are Black people. It is mind boggling to me that these people have been able to operate in this fashion for all of these years. Domestic Terrorists should be identified, designated and treated as such.

Dear Editor: Over the weekend, our community suffered a horrific tragedy when a white supremacist gunned down 13 individuals, killing 10 and injuring three, at Tops Markets on Jefferson Avenue in Buffalo—an area of the city where 78 percent of the population is Black. We are outraged that this type of racially motivated domestic terrorism was unleashed in our community, and we continue to send my thoughts and prayers to the victims and their families.

I'm Just Sayin'

DARK DAY SATURDAY Tragedy recently struck our community in one of the worst ways imaginable.

On a typical busy Saturday afternoon at the Tops Market on Jefferson, the residents of the Jefferson Ave. and Utica Ave. neighborhood shopped as they have done since the only market on the East side opened.

Around 2:30 PM a White supremacist, cowardly, indiscriminately and unmercifully fired on innocent shoppers with an illegally modified military style assault rifle as they shopped.

No one in Buffalo would have ever thought that this type of violence could happen here. Well Buffalo it has. Thirteen people were shot and of the thirteen, ten unfortunately succumbed to their injuries.

During this horrific chain of events, the best came out of the Black community.

Black and Brown people came together in solidarity.

The solidarity that was witnessed today needs to stand and stand strong. Many questions were asked at the scene of this horrendous act.

Where is the leadership? We know where they were, they were getting ready to be on TV. What was needed was for our elected officials to come down and meet with the people. Not try to shine in front of the media.

To those reading this article, it is time for Black and Brown people stand together and fight.

Our community has been dealt a heavy blow of hatred by a crazed gunman . How safe do we feel now,? Over policed and over discriminated. The black and brown communities needs descent schools, descent housing clean streets and descent walkable sidewalks.

We need Black leaders that will lead and not by greed. We are NOT Buffalo Continued Page 14

s we witnessed the travesty of White Racist terrorism, what we discovered is that there are those in America in positions of power who serve the interest of the false notion of White Supremacy against the interest of Black people and others who stand for the common humanity of all nationalities .

In Buffalo, New York, which statistics reveal, is the sixth most racist city in America, we still hide the racist realities under the illusion of fairness, equity and the title of Good Neighbors earned by Black folk who historically have gone out of our way to care for and serve our neighbors, even when they don’t look like us, or even acknowledge us when we encounter them in venues that are majority White; as when you go to the same school but when you’re at Galleria Mall or one of the other malls where there may be a majority of white shoppers, you fail to recognize me unless when your White friends go to the bathroom and no one else is around.

Racism, like most of the other isms that separate, exploit or oppress human beings, only rears its face when they can hide behind the veneer of public office, professionalism or body armor with helmet included. My people, unless and until we are ready to bring it out in the open and tear open the sores that have been festering throughout the country and yes, in Buffalo, even though we sometimes get it in blackface, no pun intended, it will continue. The light of truth has to shine on all of the inequity and inequality that has existed, is preserved and is protected in Buffalo, from City Hall to East Ferry and throughout the country.

The stench of racism with all its ugliness and destructiveness pervades the very atmosphere here in Buffalo and yet we go to work, immerse ourselves in our jobs during the week and on the weekend wallow in raucous/forgetful entertainment and do our shopping oblivious to the threat all around us.

Then in the aftermath of all the devastation to our world and the lives of those massacred, we call on God for guidance and reconciliation. Well, I say God has been giving us guidance from the very beginning of our sojourn and told us firmly to love one another, which means loving ourselves, ask for mercy and forgiveness and atone for our sins. God has never abandoned us; it is we who have abandoned God. Has America's original sin ever been atoned for?

We have not done as God has told us to do. We fail to love each other, because loving each other requires that we know each other, and that is impossible if we fail to even study and know ourselves. Instead, we have bought into the lies of defamation and denigration that have been told to us over and over again by those who have shown themselves to be incapable of truth. Now, they even threaten to arrest teachers who have the courage to teach the truth.

They have lied and taught that it is we who are violent, that we are to blame for our victimization. We believe it and show by our actions of self hatred and Black on black violence that is just the tip of the iceberg of how we respond to the lies they tell us. They have told us and show us with false images, that we are inferior and deserve to be punished. Yet, it is they who show themselves inferior to the plan that God has for all human beings. Because, God has told us that we are to be kind in relations with each other and in order for us to achieve the best possible of ourselves we must truly serve and be in relationship with others.

If there is love between Brothers and Sisters in humanity, then it behooves the one who witnesses the evil to reject it, point it out and assist the one doing the evil by stopping it. Then it becomes a duty to exhort them to repent and make amends. But instead of making amends, they repent with words on Sunday and proceed to cause more lies and destruction on Monday. White people need to be talking to other White people about the truth. They know the language, they know the truth. They know where the militias congregate and they know their signs and signals to each other. Only white people can stop this white supremacist ideologic. They know the secret places and spaces where these racist teach and train.

White folks in America, the forty million who voted for trump and the government have not made amends for America’s original sin of the transatlantic Slave trade. There has not even been a clear and ongoing apology. Whether you were here or not, or your ancestors were here or not, does not matter because you have lived and are living here under the cloak of White skin privilege. Also, by law, when you adopt a country, you adopt its history and everything that comes with it. So, it is your government, as it is ours, that owes the responsibility of the sincerest of ongoing apologies to Black people for the original sin of the transatlantic slave trade and imposition of chattel slavery on the enslaved human beings, as well as the ongoing suffering imposed

by Institutions created for the express purpose of maintaining the status quo of ethnic and class entitlement. It is our Government that owes the Financial, social, political and material debt to Black people that will be determined by us.

All White people in America owe it to themselves, their children and to Black people who live among them, to study the true history of America, so they will see the need for an ongoing apology to Black people for what we have suffered over the centuries and let our government pay the financial, social, political and material debt.

and all of the other seen and unseen methods and mechanizations used to denigrate, oppress and continue to exploit us whether you understand it or not.

We all, have work to do on ourselves and with each other.

Black folks need to do as we have always done, band together in love and this time know that our binding is a bond that looks to the future towards the generations that will take up the torch of truth to eradicate all forms of division in the human family. White folks have a job to do as well, as Kwama Toure, once known as Stokely Carmichael, said in the 60's, "White people of conscience and consciousness need to be talking to other White people", who may be vulnerable to the hate mongering because of their social, educational or financial circumstance. White people who know that truth must speak to vulnerable whites in the language they understand, recounting the true history of America where Black folks have always fought and built along side of Whites and everybody else to make America what it has become and can become; a true democracy, where all voices are heard and all interest are served. As the Great Prophet Jesus taught "as you treat the least of these is indeed how you treat me.

We will not allow hatred to win and we commit that we will examine past solutions and current actions through the prism of truth. We will build our policies and actions through that prism seeking the balance, harmony and the order that Our Creator shows us in creation. As we do that, we will unceasingly pursue propriety, reciprocity and justice for us all.
