Profile of Rochester’s Chandler Jones: From Endicott High to Superbowl Championship!

A

s the youngest of three boys born to Camille and Arthur Jones, Rochester’s Chandler Jones had some big shoes to fill – athletically, at least.

He’s not the only professional athlete in the family. In fact, all three of the Jones brothers get paid to play.

Chandler is a defensive end for the Super Bowl champs the New England Patriots. They defeated the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday for the NFL Superbowl Championship title.

Injuries limited Jones to 10 regular season games, but he’s played both playoff contests and totaled 6 sacks on the year. He has 23.5 career quarterback takedowns in 40 regular season games.

Chandler’s older brother is UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon “Bones” Jones.

The oldest of the Jones brothers is also quite athletic. Arthur Jones plays defensive end for the Indianapolis Colts, the team Chandler and the Patriots beat to punch their ticket to the Super Bowl.

Coming out of Union-Endicott HS in Endicott, New York, most recruiting sites had Jones rated as just a 2-star player, but his 6-foot-5 height was appealing to colleges. But Jones got it done on the field, becoming an All-Big East performer at Syracuse, garnering first team all-conference honors after his junior season, despite playing in just 7 games.

Jones skipped his senior season to enter the 2012 NFL Draft, where the Patriots made him the 21st overall selection. Jones signed a 4-year, $8.17 million contract with New England in May after being drafted. It included a signing bonus of nearly $4.4 million and over $7.4 million of the deal is guaranteed.

The 24-year-old will be an unrestricted free agent after next season. He will count $2.6 million against the cap in the upcoming year.

With about 450,000 followers between Twitter and Instagram, Jones is clearly a popular fellow. Not shy about posting a selfie, Jones gives a glimpse through photos of what life is like as a New England Patriot. Jones can be found on Twitter @ Chan95Jones and on Instagram at Chan95Jones.

Luther Walker Honored as Erie County Legislature “Citizen of the Month” Legislator Barbara Miller Williams honored the life and legacy of Mr. Luther Walker as the Erie County Legislature “Citizen of the Month” for January 2015. The event was held during the regular Erie County Legislature Session on January 29 in Erie County Hall. A reception immediately followed.

Luther Walker Jr. has been involved for over 40 years in the Buffalo community as a community activist and is the latest recipient of this distinguished award.

He began his community work as a Board Member of the Board of Block Clubs. As a member of the Masten Block Club Coalition he was active in block club training and resolving resident complaints. He currently is Board President of the Coalition for the Redevelopment of Unified Community Involvement and Leadership (C.R.U.C.I.A.L.) Human Services Community Center which services seniors and youth in the Fillmore Council District. He is also a faithful member of the True Bethel Baptist Church where he serves as President of the Security Ministry and Board Member for the True Community Development Corporation. Luther was born and raised in Buffalo and is married to Cecilia Walker. Congratulations Mr. Walker!

United Black Men’s Think Tank to Host 4th Anniversary Dinner and Awards Event The United Black Men’s Think Tank of Buffalo will celebrate it’s 4th Anniversary with a Dinner Party & Award Ceremony fundraiser on Saturday, February 21 at the New Golden Nugget Banquet Facility, 2046 Fillmore Avenue from 6 - 10 PM. ALBANY, N.Y — Carl Heastie, a Democratic lawmaker from the Bronx, was elected to the leadership position of the New York state Assembly after the resignation of longtime speaker Sheldon Silver amid federal corruption charges.

The 47-year-old Heastie made history by becoming the first AfricanAmerican speaker. He was chairman of the Assembly Labor Committee for the past two years. First elected in 2000, he is a former budget analyst for the New York City Comptroller’s Office with a bachelor’s degree in math from the State University at Stony Brook and an MBA from Baruch College. He also leads the Bronx Democratic County Committee — a post he has said he will Carl Heastie leave if named speaker.

Heastie takes the helm as speaker as the Assembly heads into critical budget negotiations with the state Senate and Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The speakership is one of the most important positions in state government, with the power to set committee assignments and control which bills get votes and which ones languish.

In a statement, Heastie said he was humbled by his colleagues’ support.

“He’s a good man and he’ll do a good job,” Silver told reporters as he left the Capitol on Monday.

Among those praising him as a consensus builder who can get things done, Assemnlywoman Crystal D. Peoples-Stokes reflected on Heastie’s role in helping to make UB 20-20 a reality. Initialy against the plan, he not only changed his position after she explained to him its benefits and importance to minority students, he got the bill through the assembly. She said the episode speaks well for Heastie’s ability to be not only willing to change his mind on policy matters, but also to use his influence to make something happen. “That speaks volumes for his ability to lead,” she said.

Silver’s resignation comes after he was charged with taking nearly $4 million in payoffs and kickbacks over a decade for his influence on real-estate legislation and medical grants. The Manhattan Democrat says he expects to be exonerated and will keep his Assembly seat. He led the Assembly as speaker for 21 years.

Assembly Democrats had initially said they would wait until Feb. 10 to select Silver’s replacement, to encourage an open and deliberative process. That changed, however, as Heastie quickly locked up support.

“The members felt that ... a consensus had emerged,” said Assembly Majority Leader Joseph Morelle of Rochester, who was briefly a candidate for speaker. “We need to move forward on budget deliberations ... to get back to work.”

In a statement, Heastie vowed to pursue a series of ethics reforms including a new Office of Ethics and Compliance led by a non-legislator, new limits on how much outside income lawmakers can earn, and greater reporting of outside income and legislative stipends. Outside pay is a central issue in the case against Silver.

“We must seize this opportunity for reform and enact the type of lasting change that will make the Assembly more open, transparent and accountable to the voters,” he said in a statement.

Nigeria seeing shift in politics of religion ahead of vote In one poll, the two leading contenders in Nigeria’s February 14 presidential elections – Mohammadu Buhari and Goodluck Jonathan – are “running neck-to-neck.” In another analysis, experts are projecting that a run-off will happen. Still others think that Buhari, the opposition candidate, will win by a slim margin. All of these scenarios are unusual in a country where incumbent presidents have always won by a landslide, and their existence means that no outcome can be taken for granted this time.

Lagos (AFP) - Less than two weeks from national polls, Nigeria's ruling party is fac-

ing unprecedented shifts in the politics of religion that could spell trouble for the incumbent, President Goodluck Jonathan.

While he may still be the favourite on February 14, experts said two key factors could remove his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from power for the first time since the end of military rule in 1999.

First, opposition leader Muhammadu Buhari, a northern Muslim, has gained surprising traction in the mostly Christian south, despite sustained PDP efforts to paint him as a religious extremist.

The PDP could also suffer a historically lopsided defeat in the Muslim-majority north,

where the party has previously drawn considerable support, even when a Christian was at the top of the ticket.

- 'Surpassing religion' – Buhari, a former army general who led a military government for 20 months from December 1983, is hardly the dream candidate for many in the south, experts said.

Some southerners have an entrenched antipathy towards Muslims from the Hausa ethnic group, members of which plundered the country as military rulers through much of the 1980s and 1990s PDP efforts to brand Buhari as an extremist devoted to Islamic law have also been successful, said John Campbell, a former US ambassador to

"It is grossly unfair. I know him. He is not an extremist but these things resonate," he told AFP. Analyst Jibrin Ibrahim agreed that for the first time in religiously divided Nigeria, governance could be "surpassing religion" as a campaign issue.

"The issue of religion is very present in all our elec-

tions and will be in this one," said Ibrahim, from the Centre for Democracy and Development in Abuja.

"What I think is new about these elections is that it is really about the failures of Jonathan.

"There are voters in the south who don't particularly like Buhari but they have been

extremely disappointed with the last four years and that could shift support to Buhari."

Nigeria’s capital saw another day of protests Tuesday amid fears that millions of Nigerians will be disenfranchised in the country’s upcoming general election because of the government’s failure to distribute required voter identification cards.

Around one hundred youths surrounded the Independent National Electoral Commission headquarters in Abuja for the second day of demonstrations demanding that the Feb. 14 election be postponed to allow voter cards to be distributed.

“Bread of Heaven” is True Bethel, Rev. Pridgen’s Newest Ministry “Bread of Heaven” food truck is the latest ministry of True Bethel Baptist Church. The goal of the truck is to feed the homeless, malnourished and in areas where people are struggling financially, said True Bethel Pastor Darius Pridgen. He said the truck will deliver food city-wide not just the East Side truck, but as he said, “a needs-side truck.” It is estimated that it will be at least a month before the truck is able to hit the streets. It will be staffed by volunteers and stocked with donated food.

Another Will Holton Musical Experience Showcases Local Talent

uffalo native “Saxophonist and Humanitarian” Will Holton has presented many concerts to the Queen City since 2008 and has given tutelage to various singers and musicians .

On Saturday, February 14 at the Tralf Music Hall he will present his latest musical experience, “Love Cadenza” which, like his previous shows, will showcase some of the regions most captivating, up and coming performers. The featured artists will include vocalists Tifani, Jetaun Louie, Carrington Gaines, Carl Smith, special guest from “Taylor Made Jazz” trumpeter Brian Freeman and the saxman himself Will Holton.

Holton on The Heritage: “I believe in Buffalo, NY. It’s the talent, people, and the culture that makes it a one- of- kind type of place,” reflects the young multi talented musician and entrepre-

neur.

“We are growing indeed medically, commercially and educationally. Shea’s Theatre Review by Matt Bauer

Musical Captures Magic of Motown Motown was dubbed the “The Sound Of Young America,” but judging from the multi-generational make- up of the crowd on the opening night of the eponymous musical’s eight show run at Shea’s on January 20th, the label made timeless, pioneering music that’s transcended age and race and still sounds as timely and relevant a half a century after Berry Gordy (who is the focal point of the play) established it in 1959.

On the surface, Motown, is a great jukebox musical, packing in a massive 50 of the legendary label’s now standard songs, many smartly interwoven into medleys, that had the crowd clapping along as a sing off between The Four Tops and The Temptations (at the rehearsals for the Motown 25 special) opened the play before it flashed back even further to Berry Gordy’s youth.

What follows is classic hit after classic hit as Gordy (played

by Jamarice Daughtry) assembles the legendary stable of artists that transformed popular music: The Temptations, The Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, The Marvelettes, The Supremes, Smokey Robinson, Mary Wilson The Supremes, The Jackson Five (Reed L. Shannon made an impressive Michael JacksonJ) and even Buffalo’s own Rick James, all played by a rotating cast of three dozen performers. Sure the nostalgia factor was high, but the young cast performed songs that have become part of popular music DNA with such a youthful vigor that it was impossible not to become immersed in the era during the show’s two-and-a-half-hour run time.

And to its credit, Motown doesn’t shy away from the darker aspects of the period including the industry obstacles the company faced in trying to get their music played on popular radio, the hostile atmosphere the touring MotorTown touring review faced in the segregated south and the riots that followed Dr. Martin Luther King’s assassination, a poignant set piece featuring “What’s Going On.” With excellent production values, Motown was indeed a spectacle, yet it also featured some fine acting. Berry Gordy can’t sing like Daughtry (who replaced regular Clifton Oliver) but Daughtry captured Gordy’s focus and drive quite well. Jarran Muse emitted the mercurial, defiant and sensual cool of Marvin Gaye while Allison Semmes nailed the polished poise, if not the vocals of Diana Ross.

Ultimately, Motown The Musical was a compelling tale of musical and social history delivered with panache and soul, with a universal appeal.

In short, it impressively summarized the magic of Motown.

D’Angelo is Back – And Better Than Ever!

his past Saturday D’Angelo graced the SNL stage marking his first live performance for his long awaited critically acclaimed third studio album Black Messiah. Backed by his all star band the Vanguard, including The New Power Generation drummer John Blackwell, bassist Pino Palladino of The Who and guitarist Jesse Johnson of The Time, along with soulful back up singers, it all made for an unforgettable performance by this long revered R&B artist. It’s been 14 years since his last album Voodoo (2000) the follow up to his first album and hit title track “Brown Sugar ( 1995) . He performed two songs from the new album starting with “Really Love “ and ending with “The Charade,” giving ample spotlight on his talents and emphasis on the current social climate of unrest surrounding the killings of Mike Brown, Eric Garner, and Travon Martin. Clad in a dark hoodie with his band dressed in black protest t-shirts that read #blacklivesmatter and “ I Can’t Breathe” along with a visible body outline in white chalk on the stage somewhat suggesting just how close he feels to the subject matter, D’Angelo crafted a passionate performance of messaging and meaning shining through the hook from The Charade that lays indelibly on the brain: “All we wanted was a chance to talk 'Stead we only got outlined in chalk Feet have bled a million miles we've walked Revealing at the end of the day, the charade” Hats off D’Angelo for shinning as a great musician and shining a light on the fight for justice and for the Black lives that matter. #blacklivesmatter

Local NAACP Chapter Marks 100 Years of Freedom Fighting!

T

his month, the Buffalo NAACP will celebrate its 100th Anniversary!

Buffalo, New York played a major role in the formation of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. In 1905 a conference to be held in Buffalo was organized by Professor W.E.B. DuBois of Atlanta, Georgia.

He made arrangements with William H. and Mary Talbert to have the first day of the meeting on July 11, 1905, at their 521 Michigan Avenue home. Representatives from 18 states and the District of Columbia attended. The July 12th and 13th meetings were held in Fort Erie Ontario, Canada. Plans were made for a permanent organization to be known as the “Niagara Movement”. Professor DuBois prepared the principles of the Niagara Movement.

The Platform of this organization includes *Freedom of speech and criticism; *An unfettered and unsubsidized press: *No caste distinction of race and color: *Recognition of human brotherhood as a practical; present creed: *A belief in the dignity of manual toil and other good things. Four years after that event, in 1909, in New York City, an interracial group of prominent citizens founded the NAACP based on the principles outlined by the Niagara Movement.

July 1, 1914 and signed by Amelia G. Anderson, Secretary and John E. Brent, Chairman, was sent to the Colored Citizens of Buffalo requesting their moral support in organizing a Branch of the National Association For The Advancement of Colored People. At that time there were about 30 branches in the country.

As a result of this appeal, a Constitution and By-Laws was adopted November 30, 1914 for the Buffalo Branch and was approved by the National Board of Directors on January 15, 1915.

Announcements from 1922, 1926, 1927 and 1933 show mass rallies/meetings Were held at Bethel AME, First Shiloh Baptist, St. Luke AME Zion and the Michigan Avenue YMCA. Ministers listed on these slingers which are a part of the branches archives were Rev. Henry Durham, Rev. W.R.A. Palmer, Rev. E.J. Echols, Rev. S.O.B. Johnson, Rev. O.H. Brown, Rev. Dr. J. Edward Nash and Rev. D. Robinson. The relationship between the Buffalo NAACP and the religious community exists to this day.

Many of the predominately African - American churches in the Buffalo area hold Life & Gold Life Memberships and support the branch Annual Dinner.

(Note: In the late 1960’s the Buffalo Headquarters of the NAACP which was located at Jefferson and E. Ferry St. burned down. All of its contents including most historical documents were lost in that fire. The historical papers and records that continue to exist are those that some members had in their homes.)

THE MODERN CIVIL RIGHTS ERA Presidents that served the branch during the turbulent and volatile civil rights years of the late 1950’s – early 1960’s were Raphael DuBard, Joseph Easley and Donald R. Lee. Both DuBard and Lee also served as President of the New York State NAACP Conference of Branches.

Public Schools vs Charters: Our Children, Our Choice

W

hen last we met, we were discussing the raging debate over the existence and proliferation of Charter schools in our city. We were indignant about the conversation that’s happening among decision makers – without parents – over the fate of our own children.

That such disrespect could be happening…right in the presence of an active and vocal parent body is evidence of just how deeply entrenched modern day plantation culture is…in one of the most segregated cities in the nation. Make no mistake about what’s happening here. Those who have held America’s black communities hostage, retarding the development of our children through control of public school systems have done so because of our ignorance. They’ve done so because of our lack of faith in our own ability to build and operate the institutions that will honor our humanity and serve our academic and overall success.

This insult to the autonomy of parents is not new. We’ve seen it before, at a time when there was no need for political correctness, or cleverly worded Sabirah talking points, or clandestine scheming to accomplish the same results. On the slave plantations, our people were chattel, without the right to make de- Muhammad cisions on behalf of our children. Massa didn’t have a conversation with us about whether or not he could sell our children. We weren’t offered a dialogue on anything, including the most precious, most personal and divine charge of parenting.

Look closely, and see the ways in which this culture is rife throughout the school district’s interaction with us in just this one aspect of our community life.

The Juneteenth Phenomenon: In Buffalo, we take our Juneteenth celebrations seriously. We know the holiday grew out of the experience of enslaved blacks in Texas who remained enslaved long after “emancipation” because the plantation owners simply didn’t tell them that they were free. In today’s public schools, our children have languished under intolerable conditions… untaught, unloved, pushed out through suspensions, arrested and handcuffed as young as 5 years old, labeled retarded, shot up with psychotropic drugs, molested through “Tanner” exams, and so on. Though school administrators knew they were legally required to grant a transfer request, they habitually told parents that there was no room in the school being requested, and that their child had to stay. District Parent Coordinating Council President Sam Radford and the parent body are being excoriated like the riders who eventually made it to Galveston. Administrators don’t want you to know about transfers, charters, private school options, homeschooling options, or anything else that will empower you to “free” your child and your future.

The “Our Negras” Syndrome: Slave owners were very careful about traveling ministers and anyone who came from out of town to talk for any reason with the enslaved. Those designated to preach on their own plantations had their sermons thoroughly vetted, with all the right Biblical references identified to reinforce the divine mandate of black subservience. “Who is this comin’ in here to talk to our negras?” was the question asked at the slightest suspicion. And that’s just the question that’s been asked in the wake of the visits to Buffalo of Geoffrey Canada of the Harlem Children’s Zone, Tim King of Chicago’s Urban Prep Academy, and most recently, Dr. Steve Perry of Capital Prep in Hartford, Connecticut. These heads of wildly successful independent schools are exposing the lie that schools perform badly because children are poor. The very image of these strong, assertive, successful black men shatters the veracity of a system where 80% of special education students are black and brown boys. How dare they come here, and how dare we invite them!

The “Happy Darkie” Syndrome: How often were the spirituals that our fore parents sang in cotton fields used as evidence of our contentment in slavery? How often was the lie told that we just didn’t want to be free? We’ve talked about the diabolical company line that administrators repeat ad nauseam….our parents are happy with their schools, they say. Less than 2 weeks ago, Mark Frazier, head of student placement and registration offered it again.

As the district flagrantly violates the law by refusing to make transfers, he mused that parents are requesting fewer transfers because they’re feeling more comfortable with improvement efforts – the changing “face and culture and climate and the perception of what’s happening at those schools.” Seriously? Parents are asking for a child who can read, write, and compute, and he’s claiming that we’re satisfied with climate and perception? Happy darkies indeed.

Fear of the Big Black Buck”: The demonizing of our men may be the most consistent, most pervasive outgrowth of chattel slavery. Whether it’s Susan Smith claiming that a big black man kidnapped the children that she herself drowned, or “conservative” actor Ben Stein claiming that Michael Brown was indeed armed… “with his incredibly strong, scary self,” or cornerback Richard Sherman riled up and shouting after a game, our brothers continue to be cast as brutish villains. –And Teachers Union President Phil Rumore knows this well. This battle hardened strategist has been at the helm of the union’s scramble to seize the city’s teaching jobs for white suburban women since the before the BUILD days...over 40 years. Now, with opportunistic hosts (politicians and rich whites) riding the backs of parents’ legitimate efforts for change, it’s time for the power of optics.

For the first time, the white women were brought out from hiding, and out front to the microphones at the recent board of education meeting. Twelve of them, with coordinated messages, juxtaposed their images against those of DPCC President and Vice President, Sam Radford and Bryon McIntyre…the big black bucks. They lamented that the true aim of the parent group was to put them out of their jobs. Brilliant. Imagine the cunning involved in (trying to) twist a strength for us…into a weakness. It was the 2005 Million Family March that gave rise to the Millions More Movement and our subsequent involvement with the DPCC. That’s where our men were challenged to step up the effort to build our communities, joining our women, who had always been at the fore. That’s a good thing…but how deviously clever to craft the time tested, provocative image of King Kong looking to savage the white woman! It’s on, y’all.

What we need now is the courage to recognize the hallmarks of our painful past, and make today’s choices with awareness. See the plantation. See the coordinated effort to tighten the grip on a community that’s decided to go free. The evidence is in. The facts say that those currently tasked with preparing our children with quality education either can’t… or won’t. Which of these is Ok with you?

Buffalo Schools at the Crossroads:

“Flyergate” Should Not be a Distraction to the Only Issue That Matters - It Should be About the Children!

on’t lose sight of the forest for the trees. It Should be About the Children!

If we applied talk about “transparency, openness and honesty” to the expression of disrespect and disregard by some Board members, we would find the evidence of such behavior written all over their faces. Our students have noticed it, brought it to our attention and frankly been the example for mature behavior that the adults have only given lip service to.

As one student observed last Wednesday night, “I’ve seen board members sit and Barbara Seals tap their pens and be on their phones and I realize that if the same behavior was to Nevergold be executed by me or one of my classmates, we would be considered low performing.” Pan to the Board table to find one Board member texting on his phone as he ignored the young man’s words. Go to YouTube if you don’t believe me.

Last week the distribution of a two flyers depicting all the Board members and others by racist, derogatory and demeaning caricatures ignited a firestorm that has threatened to eclipse the real issues that the Board should be addressing. Really?

Should anyone be surprised that something of this sort would happen? For nearly two years one board member has been referring to the African American women, on the staff and board, as “clueless, incompetent, idiot, sisterhood” and probably much worse than that in private. Furthermore, a recent email from Mr. Paladino to the civil rights consultant, who is studying the problem of equity in our District and suggested delaying the decision to hand over our schools, warned him to “Stay out of our way”. These and other actions by this board member have invited this sort of “nonsense”. Flyer Gate.

The timing of the release of these anonymously produced flyers is questionable. But one thing that we should understand is that while the focus is on this piece, we are distracted from the very important issue of what happens to four “out-of-time” schools and the students, who are currently enrolled in them.

Even as the Board “debates” the merits of school developed redesigns and charter-school take over, one Board member, Larry Quinn recently visited Bennett High School and met with staff to outline their future. I spoke to staff members, who were present during this meeting and asked that their names be withheld, but confirmed that Mr. Quinn promised the following: The charter schools would take ownership of Bennett; Mr. Ogilvie will be leaving his position by April 1st; and a new Superintendent from the ranks of current principals has already been selected by the Board majority. Does this sound like there will be a fair and reasoned assessment of the redesign plans as compared to the charter schools take-over? It doesn’t seem likely. And nothing was said about the fate of the students at Bennett. It Should be About the Children!

In the midst of the discussion of whether the vote will be to maintain Buffalo Schools for Buffalo students or give those schools to “public”, but privately run charters, there is a question of Mr. Paladino’s conflict of interest. At the charter school presentations, I made a point of asking each for the identity of their landlord. In two of the three cases, Tapestry and Health Continued Page12

The Kerner Commission, a federal government agency, published a report in March 1963 and exposed a national pattern of White police brutality. What that report did in essence over 50 years ago is admit to the world that the United States was, in truth, “two nations” – one White, policed with respect for human rights, and the other Black, a police state and the scene of extreme cruelties. Is there any difference today?

From this nation’s beginning the “Founding Fathers” raping and murderous actions have been to force White supremacy on people of color. Racism was/is the vehicle of choice, which is as “American as apple pie.” The English language is soaked in racist examples of “black” being associated with something negative such as angel (white)/devil (chocolate) food cake, blackout, blackball list, etc.

“Founding Fathers?” Even though other people of the human family sailed the seas and dispelled the common belief of that era that the world was flat, there was a darker side: the ultimate enslavement of people of color. And history, as taught to our children, still does not give a balanced picture. It is not made plain that Africans crossed the seas long before Columbus and traded/lived peacefully among the Native Americans. (Read “They Came Before Columbus” by Ivan Van Sertima.)

The question is, what DO we have to be proud about America? During enslavement, we weren’t even considered a whole human being, but 3⁄4 of a man in the Constitution (has the wording been corrected yet?) From slavery to segregation to Jim Crow/lynching, to double and triple digit unemployment, the criminal unjustsystem, red lining in the banking industry – such is the status quo in this capitalist system.

What America has on its hands is the worst genocide in human history in the deaths of over 100 million Africans in the African holocaust of enslavement. And unlike others who have been compensated, Black people are still waiting for their 40 acres and two mules (compound the interest on both now!).

And what about Black people’s blood shed in all the wars starting with the war with England, the Spanish- American War, Civil War, World Wars I and II, Vietnam etc., to them latest attempt to spread “democracy” abroad (Iraq) while being treated as second and third class citizens here in America.

Even Black high ranking elected officials cannot escape DWB in 2015 (“Driving While Black”). This is the time to support groups like NCobra and the African United Front, two organizations that have been at the forefront of the Reparations movement for Africans in America.

civil rights organizations. These groups were seen to be more aggressive than the NAACP and their leadership often complained about the NAACP. They charged the Association was too wedded to a program of legal action and negotiations.

In reality, the NAACP had the most varied program and tactics of all the civil rights groups then active. History records the NAACP both locally and nationally had leadership with courage and common sense. Equally important, it had leadership with staying power and vision.

LITIGATION, PROGRESS AND PROMISE When the NAACP was developed there were no other organizations, civic or social groups, or laws protecting Black people from all types of offenses.

The focus of the NAACP from its inception was to fight segregation in schools, housing, public accommodations, denial of employment, voting rights, lynching and other violence against Black citizens.

We Need To Examine with Urgency How We Treat Our Chldren...

“A population that does not take care of the elderly and of children and the young has no future, because it abuses both its memory and its promise.” -- Pope Francis For many, the start of a new year is a chance to turn over a new leaf and take a hard look at the gap between who we say want and need to be and who we are. As a nation it’s time to close our hypocrisy gap in the treatment of our children and value and protect our children—all of them. We need to examine with urgency how we treat our children and the gap between what we say and what we do.

What do these numbers tell us about who we are as a nation and whether we value the life and potential of every child?

Why do we choose to let children be the poorest age group in our rich nation and stand by as millions of children suffer preventable poverty, hunger, homelessness, sickness, neglect, abuse, miseducation, and violence?

Why do we continue to mock God’s call for justice for children and the poor and our professed ideals of freedom and justice for all?

It’s time to close our hypocrisy gap as a nation and to realize the promise of a fair playing field for all children.

We can and must do better.

City of Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency Request for Proposals January 22, 2015 The City of Buffalo (“City”), through the City of Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency (“BURA”), is seeking proposals through the federal HOME Investment Partnership Program from qualified not-for-profit agencies to acquire, rehabilitate and manage a HOME-assisted multi-family rental housing development located at 413 East Delavan Avenue (The Property). The development consists of ten rental units (six–three bedroom units and four-two bedroom units), adjoining office space and available on-site parking.

Additional properties owned by the City of Buffalo, located adjacent to the East Delavan site are available for redevelopment.

The respondent may consider and address these sites within their proposal but it is not a requirement in order to be considered.

The Property is currently held by a third party and BURA, on behalf of the City of Buffalo, will facilitate transfer of the Property to the successful developer.

Restrictions regarding the use of the property as affordable housing will be enforced through March, 2023 (the “Affordability Period”). The City of Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency currently holds a first position mortgage lien of $818,322 that must be assumed by the successful applicant.

Applicants must be incorporated as for-profit or non-profit entities to undertake affordable housing activities within the boundaries of the City of Buffalo.
