Rochester Set to Kick Off 12th Annual Sankofa Theatre Festival [Rochester, New York] - The Sankofa Theatre Festival, which for over a decade has been “Bringing Life to the Stage,” is back again from August 21 to 31.

Produced by MMB Theatre 1 Project, the festival showcases the original works of emerging and established African American playwrights at 7:30 p.m. nightly with a 2 p.m. matinee Aug. 24 at the Multi-use Community Cultural Center (MuCCC), 142 Atlantic Ave. “We’re pleased to have the second play of Karen Culley’s Green Book Chronicles trilogy as the main feature of this year’s festival’’ said Curtis Rivers, playwright Photos by Karen Culley and founder/artistic director of MMB Theatre 1 Project. Founded in 2007, the Sankofa Theatre Festival since then has grown from one day to two weeks.

Week one of the Sankofa Theatre Festival starts on Wednesday, Aug. 21 with Karen Culley of Irondequoit, and her The Green Book Chronicles II: Welcome to the Lilly.

The play examines closely held secrets within a Virginia family that could tear apart their longheld dream of opening a bed and breakfast in the Jim Crow era South. After the Saturday, Aug. 24 matinee, there is a talk-back with the playwright and cast.

On Aug. 28 and 29, last year’s popular addition to the festival, the Night of 10s, returns to the Multi-use Community Cultural Center (MuCCC). The ten-minute comedic and dramatic plays pertain to various aspects of the African American experience.

And on Aug. 30 and 31 the full-length play RED – That Other Color Girl by Grace Flores of Rochester, looks at how colorism has affected Black women in America.

Admission from Aug. 21 to 24 is $16 in advance; $20 at the door. During the second week of the festival, from Aug. 28 to 31, admission is $12 in advance; $18 at the door.

NFL Brings in Australian Rules Football Players to Training Camps

T

he abundance of young people and their parents choosing for them to play sports like soccer, and lacrosse have caused the NFL to look at new ways of getting NFL football players. The Australian Rules football league has been targeted by NFL to start a development program to introduce the game to them.

The NFL has players like former NFL star and Cleveland Browns running back Earnest Byner working with these guys in hope of them liking our style of football. The Bills have Christian Wade in training camp in hopes he might be able to make the roster or practice squad team. Christian said, “It’s like I’m 4 years old just learning how to play American football. Earnest Byner taught us the language of football and how to play the game. I never wore pads before and you have to have patience and then explode into the gaps leading through the holes for running with the ball. Every day I’m willing to learn and looking forward to playing in live games.”

Wade is exempt from being cut for the first 2 years and will have a legitimate opportunity to learn and develop with the Bills. “It’s a great opportunity for us; to continue to play and stop thinking about what needs to be done and just play at full speed,” he continued.

Christian touched the ball once in Bills preseason opener and made a cut back and once gone for a 65 yard TD. He has learned a lot in a short period of time but nothing beats GOD given talent and that’s what Christian Wade has to offer. He’s a very humble young man, keep an eye on his development as a possible successful NFL running back.

Bills Defensive Coordinator Leslie Frazier is excited about upcoming season and sees his defense becoming quicker and nastier. Coach Frazier says,”We saw the potential of Ed Oliver winning against offensive guards one on one . What that does when a team tries to slide protection toward Ed, this will open up more opportunities for Jerry (Hughes).”

Yes, we are going to be seeing a lot of number one draft pick ninth overall selection Ed Oliver in the coming weeks. He will be a welcome addition to the Bills defensive unit. Ed Oliver has already gotten in scuffles in practice mainly because he is big fast and nasty football player. He has been embarrassing offensive linemen in recent days. You won’t have a hard time finding him on the field during preseason and regular season games a very explosive player that Buffalo Bills have been lacking in quite some time. The defense is almost set with the key battles at linebacker and cornerback positions.

I also would keep an eye on rookie defensive lineman Darryl Johnson out of North Carolina A & T. He’s having an excellent camp and the preseason games will most likely determine his fate with Bills.

Bills defense will be more physical with younger talent on the field with our veteran secondary. Once again Bills defense will carry the team as long as they are healthy and get some type of consistent scoring by the offense. Rumor Denied! St. John Tower Has Not Been Sold Says Pastor Chapman's Office Under the leadership of the late Rev. Bennett W. Smith, former Pastor of St. John Baptist Church, the St. John Towers was developed to house the community’s senior citizens. It is said that he once remarked that the beautiful new Michigan Street high rise would be “the last place between here and glory” for those residents.

Over the past week it has been rumored that St. John Towers has been sold and the question on many people’s minds was what would happen to the senior residents.

That rumor, according to the office of St. John Baptist Church Pastor Michael Chapman, is not true. St. John Tower, according to a statement, has not been sold, rather it is part of a huge renovation project. “There is no change in ownership,” it was stated.

Introducing Dr. Ntare Ali Gault Ntare Ali Gault recently defended his dissertation and graduated with his Ph. D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo’s American Studies Department. Dr. Gault, the founder of The Njozi Ensemble which included the Njozi Chorus, Njozi Poets, and the Njozi Poetry Slams is also a playwright whose plays have been produced in Buffalo, New York City, and Phoenix, Az. Dr. Gault’s dissertation title is The Directors Cut: Black Masculinity in Early 21st Century Cinema.

Gault earned his Bachelors of Science Degree from Medaille College in 2015, his Masters of Arts in 2018, and his Doctor of Dr, Gault Philosophy in 2019 from UB. He is the husband of Dr. Erika D. Gault, and the father of Hazel Irene Elise Gault. He is the son of McDaniel and the late Irene Gault. Dr. Gault and his family are now making their home in Tucson, Arizona and he is a professor in the Africana Studies Department at the University of Arizona.

Hatshepsut:The African Queen who would be King

Hatshepsut the African Queen Of Egypt Who Became Pharaoh And Ruled The World For 20 Years A daughter of King Thutmose I, Hatshepsut became queen of Egypt when she married her half-brother, Thutmose II, around the age of 12. Upon his death, she began acting as regent for her stepson, the infant Thutmose III, but later took on the full powers of a pharaoh, becoming co-ruler of Egypt around 1473 B.C. As Pharaoh, Hatshepsut extended Egyptian trade and oversaw ambitious building projects, most notably the "Temple of Deir el-Bahri," at Luxor where she would be buried. She also launched a successful sea voyage to the land of Punt, a place located somewhere on the northeast coast of Africa, where they traded with the inhabitants, bringing back “marvels.”

Knowing that her power grab was highly controversial because she was a woman, Hatshepsut fought to defend its legitimacy, pointing to her royal lineage and claiming that her father had appointed her his successor. She sought to reinvent her image, and in statues and paintings of that time, she ordered that she be portrayed as a male pharaoh, with a beard and large muscles. In other images, however, she appeared in traditional female regalia.

In the history of Egypt during the dynastic period (3000 to 332 B.C.) there were only two or three women who managed to rule as pharaohs,

Disparities Task Force to the “Igniting NICHOLAS Hope 2019: “Building A Culture of Health & Ending African American Health Disparities” that will take place Fri., Aug. 17 and Sat., Aug. 18, 2019 at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo at 955 Main St., Buffalo. We are dreaming of community where African-Americans do not suffer from high rates of chronic disease such as diabetes, hypertension, HIV/AIDS, cancer as well as poor maternal health for our women.

We are bringing to the City of Buffalo three major AfricanAmerican physicians, among our nation’s most prominent leaders in addressing health disparities, who will be speaking specifically about health issues in Buffalo’s Black community.

Bringing this level of Black expertise and Black excellence – both national and local together is unprecedented in Buffalo and a reflection of the commitment that we are making to eliminate the health disparities that have so damaged our community for too long. The Senior Program at the Gloria J. Parks Community Center proudly announces its second annual LIVING WELL Health Fair for Seniors! The event is free for all adults aged 55 and over, and will be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, August 23rd in the gymnasium at the Gloria Parks Community Center at 3242 Main Street at the corner of Heath Street in Buffalo’s University District.

The Senior Program serves over 300 active seniors annually. And they generally want to learn more about how to take better care of themselves, in order to live active, and healthy lives. So we are making an annual commitment to creating a Health Fair so that our seniors can learn about free and affordable resources to address health concerns and wellness strategies to maintain their health. ” There will be several participatory presentations, including Tai Chi for Beginners by the Taoist Tai Chi Center of Buffalo at 10:30 a.m.; a Cooking Demonstration of easy-to-make meals by Chef Jack of Erie County Senior Services Department at 11:00 a.m.; and a demonstration of the popular Hustle for Health urban line dance for seniors at Noon. On Saturday, August 17, the Puerto Rican and Hispanic Day Parade of WNY starts at 1:00p.m. in front of Buffalo City Hall and marches north ending on the corner of Niagara Street and Porter Avenue. The event was held in celebration of National Health Center Week. In Remembrance of Our Beloved Baba Simba It’s been 9 years since Baba Simba Mlee, the Ambassador of Peace and Love, made his Transition (August 2, 2010) after a brief, but valiant bout with cancer. It was perhaps his greatest struggle, aside from what he often described as his lifelong quest to liberate the African mind in “the struggle to eliminate ignorance.”

An uncompromising cultural nationalist, Pan Africanist and chief Challenger photographer for more than a quarter of a century, he was known affectionately throughout the region and the country, as “Brother Simba.” Indeed he was everybody’s “brother,” everybody’s conscience, everybody’s reminder of their Blackness (whether they wanted to be or not). Through his camera lens he captured generations and important milestones and events in the history of African Americans from the Black power movement to politicians local, national and regional. Simba was respected and even revered by many, especially young people striving to understand their culture.

He made the phrase “peace and love” a household word in his community. Some even referred to him as “Mr. Peace and Love.” And when things got rough, his advice (even to himself) was always, “go with God.”

Brother Simba’s physically presence is gone, but his spiritual essence will always be with us. And every time we hear or say “peace and love” we will remember him. Because that, in essence, was who he was, and that is what he has finally found.... peace and an abundance of God’s love.

n Sunday, August 25 Beau Fleuve Music & Arts Festival will host their 3rd Annual Ultimate Sunday Funday summer event in Buffalo’s Silo City from 11a.m. – 9p.m. After two successfully progressive years presenting a hot diverse potluck of talent, this millennial led event founded by Buffalo native Lindsey Taylor, continues to push forward bridging the gap between generations, communities and cultures with the annual festival making its mark in WNY.

Having grown up in the best of both worlds with stomping grounds on Buffalo’s East Side and Cheektowaga/Amherst area, Taylor’s vision for this event shines through the diverse line up of some of WNY’s most followed and appreciated emerging talent. “It’s the ultimate melting pot,” said Taylor. He began planning the logistics of Beau Fleuve Music Arts event back in 2014, officially launching in 2017 at Buffalo River Works and eventually making Silo City the home of the festival since 2018.

The Festival was created to celebrate the rich history of Buffalo’s arts scene and illuminate the resurgence of all forms of music, art, media and culture that resonates in and from Buffalo & WNY. For one day only everyone will experience a true multi-cultural experience serving as a melting pot of music, arts and culture.

No stranger to the business of arts and entertainment, Taylor has plans to map Buffalo N.Y. as the ultimate destination for entertainment showcasing top and emerging talent on the same stage, essentially creating more avenues for artist discovery. “I plan to continue this event even 20 years from now….My vision is for Buffalo to be an international destination for entertainment but even more a platform for musicians and artist to showcase their work and be discovered,” said Taylor.

Among the 30+ acts set to hit the 3 stage set up, this year festival-goers will be able to enjoy all mediums of art and music from Blues, Hip Hop, Rock, Country, Neo Soul, Alternative, Brass, Indie, EDM, R&B, Gospel, Soul, and Trap. This year’s performers include like Headliner ZURI APPLEBY (Touring Bassist) who is currently on tour with national recording artist YUNA along with more top notch talent like CURTIS LOVELL, MILLER & THE OTHER SINNERS , THE MOLICE, FLUSE, UNIVERSAL PHUNK , FREAK THE MIGHTY, HEATHER RUSSELL, LOVE THE GENIUS JAE SKEEAE, JREY CASH, BILLIE ESSCO and 90ZNEPTUNE. It may come as a surprise to many that the most murderous place for black folks in the U.S. isn’t the big urban centers of New York, Los Angeles, or even oft-maligned Chicago.

No. This infamous honor goes to Middle America, specifically Missouri.

According to the Kansas City Star, a study by the Violence Policy Center has found Missouri to have the highest rate of Black homicide victims in the nation.

And the horrifying designation isn’t new. The state has been No. 1 on this sorrowful list for most of the decade, the news site reports.

The theme for the performance is knowledge of self. The students in fourth to eighth grade at Gloria J. Parks have been learning about Hip Hop Education, using the methodology of Hip Hop like ciphers (circle group discussions) to share their own personal lives with their peers and teachers, and to channel their life experiences into Hip Hop performance pieces.

Last year the students used Hip Hop culture to voice their concerns about major issues of injustice, like racism and gun violence. This year the staff shifted the focus to explore who our children are growing into.

This event is produced by the University District Community Development Association (UDCDA), a non-profit agency offering youth and senior citizen programs at the Gloria J. Parks Community Center, 3242 Main Street and community and housing development services at 995 Kensington Avenue. This program is funded by generous grants from the New York State Education Department, Say Yes Buffalo, and the Erie County Youth Bureau.

A free, competitive basketball tournament for girls and boys age 8-21 years old. Trophies will be awarded to the 1st and 2nd place winners in different age categories.

ATLANTA — Democrat Stacey Abrams, who vaulted onto the national political stage championing voting rights during an unsuccessful 2018 run for Georgia governor, announced on Tuesday that she’s launching a new multistate voter protection initiative and not running for president in 2020.

Abrams revealed plans for the initiative, called Fair Fight 2020, during a speech before a labor union convention in Las Vegas that was livestreamed on Facebook. The multimilliondollar project will staff and fund voter protection teams in battleground states across the country ahead of next year’s elections.

How appropriate that the Sturgeon Full Moon August 15 is in the sign Aquarius.

The symbol for Aquarius is the Water Bearer, symbolically and eternally giving life and spiritual food to the world. The water from the vessel washes away the past, leaving room for a fresh, new start. The sign of Aquarius is forward-looking and growthoriented.

After the rough month of July the sturgeon is swimming into our lives to show us that we are stronger than we think.

The sturgeon is a tough fish that can live up to 140 years.

This should be of great encouragement as so many people are going through difficult times in their lives and this Full Moon is all about survival. If you are feeling despondent take time and do some prayers on this Full Moon and ask for the strength of the sturgeon to pull you through any remaining obstacles in your life.

Take this opportunity to let go of old pain, release what bogs you down, and open your mind to renewed flexibility and clarity.

Is this 1977 or 2019 for local African American Artists?

R

enowned artist James Pappas is one of the founders of the Langston Hughes Institute and recently retired Chairman of the Black Studies Department at the University of Buffalo.

Personally he has been a mentor and longtime friend. Recently one of our artists shared with us a copy of a letter Jim wrote over forty years ago about the same issues I’m discussing today. Some of the resources and players have changed, but the results are still the same, lack of opportunities for local African American artists. We’re now losing out to artists from other cities and countries in our own neighborhoods to fulfill others agendas.

In 1977 Pappas wrote the following: “Dear Assemblyman Arthur Eve, 'This letter is being written primarily to alert you to the problems faced by Black artists in this community. Out of New York came an announcement by the African-American Arts Coalition that the plight of the Black artist is undoubtedly a very sorry one. Only two Black groups, out of ten which applied, received awards from state-sponsored grants. In dollar terms less than five percent of the total funding went to Black arts. My concern is that many artists in the Buffalo area have come to me with their problems. While many non-Black arts groups are getting funding for their projects it is a rare occasion when a Black artist gets a grant. In our own community an art group on the West side received funding to do a commissioned work for the newly named Martin Luther King Park (formerly Humboldt Park).

This would not be so bad if it weren’t for the fact that there are living and working artists in our community whose talent and expertise have been overlooked. These artists are generally found to be uninformed about grants, proposal opportunities, or are notified too late. Organizations generally find it convenient not to mention it and as a result our artists are left out.

'There is a need for a mechanism within our community such as an arts council of concerned sensitive persons who understand the plight of the artist and who are willing to handle necessary information and support so that funding can be received and administered by the Black community.

"Blacks are constantly faced with having to go to politically advantaged funding sources for their crumbs. It is important therefore that a mechanism be established to carry out the functions addressed here.

"I hope you will accept this letter in its sincerity and respond favorably to it. I speak on behalf of my fellow artists when I say that the arts must survive if we are to have an aesthetically pleasing place to live in Buffalo.”

Why are we still asking for the same favorable response for our local African American artists 42 years later?

n 2019, ninety-nine years into a one hundred year legacy, we find ourselves still asking and answering the same questions as our great ancestors did before us. Despite the obvious atrocities against our Race, both locally and worldwide. Despite the clear intentions of enemies of our Race being openly displayed, sometimes written as to leave a deliberate permanent record.

Despite understanding that our Race is being targeted. We still hear the question, "What is the solution?"

Many times we hear the popular cry, "We need to unify as a people!" Worded differently in some cases but still the same talking point. When the question becomes "What does it mean to unify as a people?” the air seems to leave the room. It is as if throughout the years of exclaiming this, many have never considered what it would look like.

Some suggest unity through political ties, others suggest unity through religion. Some will correctly give the example of Hon. Marcus Garvey and his Grand Association, yet cannot explain why it worked. Even less understand how we have come to perceive that his work has somehow finished. Although the work of rebuilding the government of our people does require an economic component, this is not the primary teaching of Garvey. Primarily he wanted Lion us to collectively have a unified PanAfrican Nationalist mindset.

BLYDEN The aim of President General Garvey was not just to speak about African greatness, but to create greatness in real time. He followed the footsteps of Bishop Henry Turner, Dr. E. W. Blyden, Martin Delaney and Dr. Robert J. Love. They understood that not only are we related to our brothers and sisters in the diaspora, but that together we would be strong enough as a people to stop the evils that have befallen us throughout history. His mission was clear. To “unite all people of African ancestry of the world to one great body to establish a country and absolute government of our own”; following the principle outlined in Declaration #13, which states, “We believe in the freedom of Africa for the Negro people of the world, and by the principle of Europe for the Europeans and Asia for the Asiatics, we also demand Africa for the Africans at home and abroad.”

The Constitution of the UNIA-ACL Government and the Declaration of Rights of Negro Peoples of the World are the foundational documents that guide this Grand Association.

At a time when the song ‘Every Race has a Flag but the Coon” was growing in popularity, White America was mocking the diasporic Africans’ lack of knowledge of self. The UNIA-ACL changed that. According to Declaration #39, the colors, Red, Black and Green, shall be the colors of the Negro race.

Every nation has a National Anthem so, according to Declaration #40 it was resolved, that the anthem “Ethiopia, Thou Land of Our Fathers etc.,” shall be the anthem of the Negro race.

These things, based on International Law are the tenets of our nation. Formed by over 20,000 African delegates from over 40 countries around the globe during the month of August 1920, who pledged allegiance to the Nation. The celebration of which is, according to Declaration #53, proclaimed to be the 31st day of August of each year to be an international holiday to be observed by all Negroes.

UNIA-ACL Buffalo Division #433 for the past 4 years has held an International PanAfrican Holiday Observance here in the city. This year’s special guest will be world renowned Historian, Researcher, Scholar and Garveyite Dr. Runoko Rashidi. With a focus on the Afri-can presence throughout the world, Dr. Rashidi will also grace us with a lecture on September 3rd at the Merriweather Library.

Throughout the history of this Grand Association from PG Garvey to PG Duncan, Garveyites have stood by these principles. Not to create a club or a protest group, not to use the colors as decoration, but to unify the diasporic African nation. So what is the solution? Garvey already told us. “Be Black, Buy Black and everything else will take care of itself.”

The formula is simple.

As Buffalo Division #79 President Cornelius McKnight once stated, “All members of the African Race should join the Government of our people.”

There is no greater mission for the African, than the unification of the African nation. Buffalo Garveyites work to rebuild what was once the largest association of Black people in the modern era. Every effort, program and event an attempt to strengthen the Black Government. Doing it all with the might of the red, the black and the green!

M&T Bank Marks Launch of a New Secured Credit Program at Five Buffalo Locations Buffalo is rebuilding in many ways – through revitalizing neighborhoods, investing in communities and culture, and now residents have a new solution to help build and rebuild credit.

Bad and limited credit can be a barrier for homeownership, renting, or even landing a job (NBC News), and a 2017 FDIC study shows this issue disproportionately impacts communities of color. In fact, 36% of black and 31.5% of Hispanic households have no credit. Credit card use is one of the fastest ways to establish credit, but it can be challenging to get a card with a poor or short credit history.

To provide a solution to this all too common issue, M&T Bank is piloting a Secured Credit Card program at five Buffalo locations – Broadway, Jefferson, Kensington,Main Delavan, and Towne Garden. As background, a secured credit card is a rising trend in banking. It requires a refundable deposit and is designed to help cardholders with bad or limited credit establish good credit through regular use and timely payments, just like a traditional card.

As part of its efforts to strengthen Buffalo's East Side, M&T gathers insights from customers, community members and local leaders about needs within the community. During these discussions, they learned of a need for assistance with credit management and an interest in financial solutions like secured credit. M&T launched its secured credit card in Buffalo, so the community that asked for it can provide feedback and inform future developments.

You may be aware that the human papillomavirus (HPV) causes most cases of cervical cancer in the United States, but did you know that HPV can also cause other cancers in both men and women, including anal, penile, vulvar, vaginal and oral cancers? And did you know that there’s an HPV vaccine that can help prevent those cancers?

There are more than 200 types of HPV, and 40 of those are spread by having vaginal, anal or oral sex with someone who has the virus.

Sexually transmitted HPV infections are so common that nearly all men and women get at least one type at some point in their lives. But because HPV seldom causes symptoms, many people who are infected do not know they have the disease.

Although there is no treatment for HPV, in most people the infection will clear up on its own, without medical treatment. However, the infection hangs on in other people, and the longer an HPV infection persists, the more likely it is to lead to cancer.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that nearly 80 million Americans have some type of HPV right now. It is also known that about 14 million Americans — including teens — become infected each year. The CDC estimates that 33,700 cancers were caused by HPV last year alone.

So how do you protect your family? The good news is that there is a vaccine that can protect you against the types of HPV that are most likely to cause cancer. The vaccine is given to males and females between ages 9 and 45. The CDC recommends starting HPV vaccination in boys and girls at ages 11-12, to ensure full protection before they become sexually active.

The HPV vaccine is most effective in younger people.

If vaccination starts before a child turns 15, only two doses are needed, six months apart. If it starts at age 15 or older, three doses are given over a period of six months.
