Dr. Leslie Myers-Small Selected to Lead ROC Juneteenth 5K Run/Walk: Virtual and Timely the Rochester City School District This year’s ROC Juneteenth 5K Run/Walk comes at a time when we are reminded, once Dr. Lesli Myers-Small has been selected as the new superintendent for the Rochester City School District.

She is the first African American woman to hold that position in Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren released the following statement regarding the appointment of Dr Myers-Small: “Dr. Lesli Myers-Small is a tremendous educator and has spent her career dedicated to improving the lives of children. I know Dr. Myers-Small, if truly empowered to do so, can improve our school district, and therefore, our city. I am equally heartened that she will be the first woman of color to serve our community in this role.This milestone is worthy of recognition and celebration, while my longstanding concerns regarding our school district Dr. Lesli Myers-Small remain and must be addressed. I congratulate Dr. Myers-Small on her accomplishment and welcome her to our efforts to ensure every child in Rochester receives the education they deserve.”

Dr. Myers-Small, the former Brockport Central School District superintendent, left Brockport in December to become State Assistant Commissioner of School Reform and Innovation, a job designed to work to bring change to low performing districts through the state, including RCSD. Myers-Small, 50, grew up in Rochester and attended its public schools. She began her career in education in the district as a guidance counselor and intervention specialist, and earned degrees from the University of Rochester and St. John Fisher College.

Dr. Myers-Small will be the city’s seventh superintendent in 10 years and inherits a district facing financial difficulties.

The Juneteenth race – a fundraiser for the Rochester Civil Rights Heritage Site -- takes place in the aftermath of a shooting that killed an unarmed Black man, Ahmaud Arbery, who was jogging Feb. 23, in a suburban neighborhood in Georgia, not far from his home. Arrests of the suspects were made only after two and a half months of no action on the case, and only after an incriminating video emerged on May 5.

Given the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s race is “virtual”: One could run or walk the 5K from home or from anywhere. The race can be done in one day or done over the course of a month or more, in one’s own neighborhood. Organizers simply ask that all running/ walking be completed by midnight on June 19, 2020. “Juneteenth” is a celebration of June 19, 1865, the day that 250 years of slavery finally ended in America.

The Rochester Civil Rights Heritage Site, a project in progress (spearheaded by the Spiritus Christi Anti-Racism Coalition -- SPARC -- and supported by many groups, including the First Universalist Initiative for Racial Equity, or FIRE), will be located within Baden Park near Upper Falls and will explore civil rights leaders, their stories, and their struggles.

The race, Rochester’s fourth, is relatively young, and Juneteenth is still an “under-celebrated day,” says Gloria Johnson Hovey, the founder and organizer of the race. Ms JohnsonHovey, a retired social worker from the Rochester City School District, requested last year, and the City of Rochester agreed, to begin the practice of flying a Juneteenth flag outside of City Hall in honor of the day. The goal of the ROC Juneteenth Run-Walk 5K Race, she says, “is to make this a larger-celebrated day.”

here’s a travesty going on in the WNY education system,” declared community activist Samuel Radford on the “We Are The Parents show on WUFO Power 96.5 radio last week.

Radford was referring to Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School (BuffSci), one of the top performing schools in Buffalo and the highest performing charter school in all of Western and Central N.Y. Buff Sci, he pointed out, has a 94% graduation rate, as well being considered as the highest performing charter school outside of New York City in the state of New York.

Proficiency rates in math and English language arts are well above the county-wide average.

With three locations (a high school on Franklin Street, a middle school on Poplar Ave. and an elementary school on

Clare Street, the Education Department has recommended renewal for the school. BuffSci had also recently received approval by the state to open a second school.

Yet the State Board of Regents have voted to deny the school’s renewal.

It was a decision that shocked parents, students, educators and community leaders; and one which will impact hundreds of minority and low-income students.

“Let’s talk about the demographics of who the students at BuffSci are so there are no illusions of who we are talking about that are going to suffer because of this decision that was made,” continued Radford. Sixty five percent are Black, over 80% minority and 90% low income.

“This is a school that is not only doing what we want a school to do, it’s one of the better schools in the City of Buffalo and the regents chose to close it.”

Why? “Buffalo Science Academy is an incredible school and they are doing something that a lot of people say can’t be done, which is educating low income families and educating Black children. If you talk about the economic demographics, 90% of their kids are low income students,” said Duncan Kirkwood, parent advocate and co-host of “We are The Parents” show.

The regents logic, he said, was that theCaronavirus pandemic was putting a financial strain on the home district and they need all the support, the resources and money they can get so they can educate the majority of students who the district serves; clearly ignoring the fact that BuffSci has one of the strongest academic records among all schools across the city. If BuffSci is shut down, the 700-plus students who attend Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School will be displaced into schools that are nowhere near as high performing.

Community leaders, as well as the school’s Executive Director Joseph Polat, are asking the regents to reconsider. On Monday pastors and business leaders joined a Zoom direct action call which included calling, emailing and tweeting Board of Regent members imploring them to reverse their

Local Barber Shops, Salons Prepare Safety Plans in Anticipation of Opening Soon

F

or many local African-American barbers and hairstylists, the announcement on Monday that Phase One of the governor’s re-opening plan for New York State included Western New York, was good news.

If all goes well, Phase Two ,which includes the opening of barber shops and beauty salons, is projected to kick off around June 1.

-Hair to GoMeanwhile entrepreneurs are busy preparing to put plans in place to protect themselves and their customers with the proper sanitary measures.

Althea Little, owner of Hair to Go Natural, located at 727 Main Street, says that she, like other area stylists, are looking forward to being able to service her customers again.

The savvy entrepreneur, who has been in business for almost 25 years, said her safety plan includes (but is not imited to) taking everyone’s temperature - workers and customers - daily; making sure everyone washes their hands regularly; Althea Little mandating that everyone - clients as well as stylists - wears a mask; practicing social distancing; and having customers sign in.

“Customers will have to sign in for tracking purposes in case someone get sick,” she explained.

In addition to spacing and partitioning work stations, “customers may pretty much have to wait in their cars,” between appointments she said. Hosting a salon full of people will no longer be allowed, she continued. “ We can no longer afford to have children and extra people waiting inside while others are being serviced.”

Staggering appointments she added, will hopefully eliminate or drastically reduce wait times. It also means that

customers will have to be on time and clear about what they want done so that stylists and braiders can work quickly and efficiently.

“Hopefully people will be able to accept the ‘new normal’ she said. “It’s all about safety first – both for the stylists and customers.”

-House of MastersSean Thompson is at the top of his game. In addition to being a Supervisor for Procuring Barber exams for the State as well as a NYS instructor, he’s been in business for 21 years. He's the owner of Shawn’s House of Masters on E. Delavan and The Grooming Lounge on Sean Thompson Main Street, which he opened less than a year ago.

Sean has his safety plan together and he’s looking forward to opening back up.

“Each and every day I want us all to be safe,” he said. “I’m completely aware of the CDC Laws to protect myself and my clients. I'm not trying to kill myself and I have to make sure my clients know I’m taking every measure to protect them and provide a safe environment.”

His safety plan inludes: Putting barriers between barber chairs if he is unabe to seperate them by 6 feet; removing the waiting area; accepting appointments only; no walk-ins; and taking the temperatures of everyone who comes in – barbers and customers alike. Also, before servicing each customer the barber has to sanitize his station, chair and hands and remove any hair off the floor. “ We will take each clients name for tracking purposes if it becomes necessary; Barbers have to have hand sanitizer at each station and peform services with new gloves for each

EVERGREEN HEALTH OPENS DRIVETHROUGH COVID-19 TESTING SITE Location at 3297 Bailey Avenue offers viral screening tests The healthcare organization Evergreen Health and its affiliate, Community Access Services (CAS), has announced its 3297 Bailey Avenue facility will serve as a drive-through testing site for COVID-19 viral screenings. The drivethrough testing officially opened on Wednesday, May 20.

Tests will be conducted outdoors, by appointment, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

COVID-19 testing will be conducted outdoors through the use of a drive-through system, allowing Evergreen staff to follow necessary safety protocols to keep screeners and those being tested safe throughout the testing process. Arrival by vehicle is strongly encouraged and some walk-up testing will also be accommodated. Participants will not need to leave their cars while being tested, and tests will be completed over the course of a few minutes via a nasal swab, with test results received within 2-3 days. Faith Leaders Demand Officer Suspension in Wake of Police Assault Faith leaders with VOICE Buffalo, a federation of Faith in Action have called on Police Commissioner Byron C. Lockwood and the Buffalo Police Department to immediately suspend, without pay, the officers involved in the assault of Quentin Suttles, until the investigation is complete.

A video of the May 10 incident shows Suttles being stopped by police and removed from his vehicle by officers. The ensuing struggle resulted in Suttles suffering a broken collarbone, a damaged eye socket, and a broken arm, among other bruises and injuries. In a letter to Commissioner Lockwood, the organization expressed “deep concern” over the “excessive and unacceptable use of physical force.”

“Police brutality remains one of the most serious and divisive of the human rights violations in our country,” they wrote.

“We therefore call for Commissioner Lockwood and the Buffalo Police Department to immediately suspend the officers involved without pay until the investigation is complete.

Allowing the officers to remain on our community streets may create more unnecessary incidents...”

Monday afternoon Cars pulled up in both directions on Jefferson Avenue in front of GROUP Ministries headquarters to receive the free items where Pastor Boyd and participating members handed out the packets to everyone who needed one.

At the close of the giveaway Bishop Frederick A. Gelsey of One in Christ Church led a prayer of pro-

tection for the community ending with “let’s follow the direction of social distancing ( 6ft) and doing what we are supposed to do to outsmart this virus because we are smarter than this virus.”

Millet: “The Queen of the Grains”

O

ne of the things we must do if we are to maintain our temples is return to the diet of our ancestors. It would be to our benefit to restore millet to its proper place in our diet, Millet is often called “the queen of the grains.” It is believed to be the only cereal that human beings could live on as the only item in the diet.

It is high in protein, B vitamins, choline, iron, silica, lecithin, manganese and other minerals. It looks like round sesame seeds.

Millet is the only alkaline grain. It helps strengthen the kidneys, spleen, stomach and pancreas. It can be used to prevent gallstones, quiet morning sickness, and adjust cholesterol levels.

Because it prevents some bacteria from growing in the mouth, eating millet can help get rid of bad breath. It is also used for urinary disorders, colitis, diarrhea, indigestion, ulcers and diabetes.

Millet helps prevent sickle cell crises, high blood pressure and cancer because it is rich in thiocyanate.

There are many ways to add millet to the diet. It can be used as a breakfast cereal, as a substitute for rice, or added to soups and stews. It can also be sprouted. It has a nutty flavor and is easy to digest, which makes it a good “first cereal” for babies.

edicated staff members Samantha Kulu, RN; Rudo Mushongo, Director of Nursing and Wasa Murphy, RN, are just a few of the "heroes and Sheroes" of the Community Health Center of Buffalo who are working to save lives throughout Erie and Niagara Counties.

They are part of the CHCB COVID-19 Team. They all have families. They all have bills. They all have responsibilities, but when their workday ends, their other lives begin. They are mothers, fathers, aunties, Muslims, Christians, girlfriends, husbands, brothers, wives, sisters, and sista’s, each living life with the hands they’ve been dealt. What do they all have in common other than their profession and their place of employment? They lay their lives on the line every day for the community and people they love.

Whether it’s working weekends or 12-hour shifts, in the performance of their daily duties, these professionals encounter the deadliest killer on the face of the planet - COVID-19. Last week, this team of brave health care professionals conducted over 500 COVID-19 tests on the CHCB Mobile Unit in Buffalo and Niagara Falls. In addition to performing COVID-19 diagnostic testing, they comforted people afraid of compromising the health of their children or elderly parents at home. They assured fellow employees, and other health care professionals who came for tests, that their results would be available in 3-4 business days and shared helpful hints on how to quarantine.

Science Charter School will be displaced into schools that are nowhere near as high performing.

Community leaders, as well as the school’s Executive Director Joseph Polat, are asking the regents to reconsider. On Monday pastors and business leaders joined a Zoom direct action call which included calling emailing and tweeting Board of Regent members imploring them to reverse their decision.

“We find the decision by the Board of Regents to be conscience-shocking," Polat wrote in a statement. "We implore our community to rally around us to alert our elected officials that the education of our children should take priority over political agendas."

The school currently serves students in kindergarten through second-grade and fifth-graders through 12th-graders. An expansion to include third- and fourth-graders was included in their renewal application.

He said he plans to push the state Board of Regents to have a special meeting to revisit the decision.

Before They Are Killed, Black Quarterbacks Need A Will

n the aftermath of the 2020 NFL Draft, it is clear to me that the majority of the members of the American Sports Media are seeking the death of Black quarterbacks, and before they die they need a will. Not a will, as in the legal document .

They need the will to stay alive.

With every NFL draft their will is tested, the prerequisite to the breaking process, when the question is asked: Would you be willing to change positions?

Every year, the Black quarterback is inevitably cornered at a podium and asked if they are willing to NOT be a quarterback. They are asked if they are willing to NOT be the Team Leader, the Field General, the Face of the Franchise, the Greatest All-American Hero, to NOT be themselves.

He could be the Heisman Trophy winner, the National Championship MVP, it doesn’t matter. If he is Black and a quarterback, the American Sports Media must see if he has a will, and ask him if he is willing to change to another position in order to get drafted into the NFL. Wide receiver? Defensive back? “Gimmick” quarterback slash “Slash”? But for every Cordell Stewart who submits his will to be a jack of all trades and his own master of none, there is a Charlie Ward who would rather just walk away.

Remember Charlie Ward? The best Black quarterback player to play basketball?

In 1993, as the Florida State University quarterback, Charlie Ward won the Heisman Trophy, Charlie Ward. The best Black quarterback to play the Maxwell Award, the basketball Walter Camp Award, the Johnny Unitas Award, the Davey O’Brien Award, the Sullivan Award, was ACC Player of the Year, and was named the MVP while winning the National Championship Game.

But at the end of his collegiate football career, he declined to be forced to elude would be sacks in the form of spiritual death plots that inevitably arise whenever you are asked if you have a will. So he went to a place where he could still pass the ball, even though the value of the score was not equal.

Ward went to the NBA, drafted in the first round of the 1994 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks. He had a 12 year career, playing the point guard position he played all of his life.

This year it was Jalen Hurts’ turn to be tested. In February, ESPN staff writer, Brook Pryor, reported the following: “Jalen Hurts is making this much clear: He is a quarterback. In his media session at the NFL combine, Hurts was asked whether he would consider switching positions.

"I've always been a team-first guy," Hurts said, "but I think I'm a quarterback. I think that's that."

She went on to write: “The Heisman finalist was a quarterback his entire career at Alabama and Oklahoma, but his athleticism makes him an attractive candidate to be converted to wide receiver or running back.”

The coded language is louder than Peyton Manning screaming “Omaha” and throwing up gang signs on a Sunday night. When I hear it, historical images flash in my mind and I envision an American slave auctioneer asking: “Are you willing to pick tobacco? You are a very athletic specimen, you know, and they don’t grow cotton on the Jones’ plantation.”

The parallels are all too real, and the annual question seems intended to instill fear into the hearts of hopeful, young Black men. It has become a ritualized vetting process Continued Page 10

Freedom Gardens is a call to action to use our backyard and front yards to grow food! Freedom Gardens honors the integral role that Buffalo played in the Underground Railroad network. Freedom Gardens is a network designed to provide food security in areas that lack grocery stores and access to healthy foods. Freedom gardeners "grow" to control our destinies and to provide for our families while building a healing community that is healthy and well! A Freedom Garden is an opportunity to eradicate the inequities that exist in our current food system, to organize and mobilize for new solutions, document and share the healing methods that were used by our ancestors and to do for self and not wait upon others to save us.

Getting Real We have lived through and survived many crises and turbulent times in our history.

We survived them all using our collective ingenuity and creativity. How did we “heal” from disease when there was no doctor to call or hospital to go to when we were sick? We identified the plants to heal and give us nourishment and the knowledge of how these plants could be used!

In our application for free gardens through Freedom Gardens, we had over 330+ applicants and now 50 gardens are being disseminated to the community, and additional fundraising is underway to be able to disseminate more free gardens to those applicants.

Using Plants to Heal During this pandemic we need to build up our immune systems! Not by taking pills (vitamins), but by using time tested remedies that our grandparents used to stay healthy! Dr. Catherine Collins and the NY State Board of Regents’ Recent Decision Will Harm Hundreds of Black children

The undersigned members of the African American Health Equity Task Force and the Fair Fines + Fees Coalition appreciate the opportunity to comment on the Proposed 2020-21 Budget for the City of Buffalo. While we recognize the unprecedented budget challenges the COVID-19 pandemic has created for the City of Buffalo and other local governments across the country, we implore you to ensure that the budget you adopt does not place the burden of closing the budget gap on the backs of Buffalo’s African American community and lowincome communities.

As proposed, the City’s 2020-21 budget fails Buffalo’s most vulnerable Black residents and residents of low income. The Proposed Budget plans to bring in more than $3 million from traffic tickets. While budgeting $3.1 million in net revenue from traffic tickets is, on its face, race-neutral, we encourage you to look closely at whether that budget number is discriminatory in application. For example, if the Buffalo Police Department is focusing more patrols in poor Black neighborhoods, it follows that it would also be issuing more traffic tickets in those neighborhoods. The problem of the racialized impact of relying on fines and fees for revenue in Buffalo has been well documented by local investigative journalism over the past year and is currently being litigated. “The lawsuit cites a finding that drivers who live in majority Black neighborhoods in Buffalo were eight times more likely to receive multiple traffic tickets on a single stop than those living in majorityWhite neighborhoods, and four times more likely to have their license suspended for not paying tickets.”

We support the Traffic Violations Agency’s mission “to cultivate responsible driving and pedestrian behaviors to reduce the number of traffic fatalities and severe injuries by deterring dangerous driving behavior through driver improvement education.” But their plan to increase total traffic tickets from 25,272 in 2018-19 to 27,000 in 2020-21 does not reflect success in their mission to reduce traffic fatalities and severe injuries. What it reflects is a nearly $400,000 increase in net revenue for the city. If the Traffic Violations Agency was successfully reducing traffic fatalities and severe injuries through driver improvement education, we should see the number of traffic tickets decreasing, not increasing. Further, the budget fails to include any assessment of the types of traffic tickets being issued. How many of these tickets were for a broken taillight or other minor infractions? And how many of those tickets were issued in neighborhoods where drivers were choosing between whether to feed their families and get their child new shoes or maintain their car? The Traffic Violations Agency has failed to explain how its proposed 2020-21 budget brings it closer to achieving its mission of reduced traffic fatalities and severe injuries “through driver improvement education.” These facts further prove that relying on fines and fees to enhance public safety does not work, and the city should utilize traffic calming strategies that does not pull people further into debt.

The 2020-21 Police Budget contains an even grimmer picture of the situation. The Police Budget reflects 32,261 traffic summons issued in 2018-19 (not 25,272 reported by the Traffic Violations Agency) and projects a 7,000 increase to 40,000 traffic tickets issued in 2020-21.

First, we urge you to request that the Traffic Violations Agency and the Police reconcile their numbers, explain why their traffic ticket numbers vary so drastically, and provide the correct number with the corresponding budget impact before finalizing the budget.

Second, we request that you ask for data from the Buffalo Police Department mapping where traffic tickets are issued. We suspect a large proportion of tickets are issued in predominantly Black neighborhoods and for matters that are not related to violations that could cause “traffic fatalities or severe injuries.” If this is the case, the pattern and practice of issuing tickets would be discriminatory in practice. We urge you revamp your approach to traffic fines and fees to eliminate any remaining structural racism in their design.

We welcome the opportunity to further discuss these issues with individual Council Members or with the Council as a whole at your convenience.

n a recent meeting the NY Board of Regents (BOR) voted to deny the renewal of Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School (BuffSci) even though it was recommended to them by the state to approve the renewal. BuffSci serves a population of 65% Black children, over 80% minority children and 90% lowincome children, and is still the highest performing charter school in all of Western and Central NY. The school boasts a graduation rate of 95% in a district whose graduation rate is 65%.

Denying the Buff Sci renewal will displace hundreds of low-income students to lower-performing schools. Buffalo’s school district has been steadily improving under the leadership of Dr. Kriner Cash and the School Board, but it has a long way to go to come anywhere near the student achievement of Buff Sci. During the Regents deliberations. 6th Judicial District BOR member Susan Mittler said: “In another year, without a pandemic or whatever, you can convince me but right now I really believe the Buffalo Public Schools need our support as a primary issue and that the charter schools need to take a second seat." A second seat? That is what a BOR member is saying to the hundreds of minority families that have their children in BuffSci? That is hurtful to the families and to our community.

Listen, I get it. Some people do not like charter schools.

They believe that low-income families should not have highquality educational options or they are carrying the Teacher Union’s water, or whatever their personal dislike of charter schools stems from. But to essentially vote to close the highest performing charter school in the entire region is terrible.

If a charter school is not performing well or if there is mismanagement of funds or some serious offense, than yes of course it should be closed. But an incredibly high performing school that serves nearly 90% low income families is something we should be trying to support and model.

These low-income students deserve a great education; it is the only way to break generational poverty. I know Regent Dr. Catherine Collins to be a good person, and dedicated life long educator. I do not believe she would ever intentionally hurt any child, but this decision will definitely hurt children.

Especially minority children! We as community members are asking the members of the Board of Regents to reconsider your vote!

I know some may want to throw a yellow flag on this line of thought. But, if the cleats fit, wear them when you bring out the chains to measure.

I would like to ask the every member of the American Sports Media the same kind of question, just to see the response: Would you be willing to shift the focus of your profession to reporting on lifestyles, food and fashion, and pop culture instead of sports?

Most of these young men have played quarterback all of their lives. But now, after years of hard work and sacrifice, their accomplishments are disregarded, their will must be tested, and the filtering question must be asked.

Last year it was Lamar Jackson fielding the question of his willingness to change positions. Before that they tested the will of Teddy Bridgewater. Before that it was Robert JUETEENTH RACE continued During this year’s race, Ms Johnson-Hovey says, we run in part to honor a man who could not run freely in his neighborhood and can never run again. Mr. Arbery, just two months shy of his 26th birthday, was jogging not far from his home when he was confronted by two armed white men, Gregory McMichael, 64, and his son Travis McMichael, 34. In the video that surfaced on May 5, Mr. Arbery is shown running, being watched by two men parked in the street in a truck. Mr. Arbery disappears from view near the truck for a few seconds, then in a conflict with the younger McMichael. Finally, Mr. Arbery is seen staggering and falling to the ground, ultimately to his death.

Across the country, on Twitter, (#irunwithahmaud, #irunwithmaud), on other social media, and in person (through runs and protests), people are demanding that justice be served.
