Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church Unveils New Technology Lab Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, the oldest African-American church in Rochester and Monroe County, recently celebrated the opening of the Instructional Technology Lab, a new public access computer lab and learning center. Located adjacent to the church, the eight-seat computer lab will provide community members access to a technology curriculum to help bridge the digital divide that limits the upward mobility of people in low-income communities. The lab was made possible by a donation of modern computer equipment and furniture from M&T Bank.

Seven Seats on Rochester School Board Up for Election This Year This year four of the seven seats on the Rochester school board are up, and the primary election is held on June 25 – which is also Primary Election Day. The election is citywide and the seats will go to the top four vote-getters. The next board will be faced with critical decisions about the future of the district, including how to respond to a report issued by a state monitor that emphasizes governance issues.

The candidates include Ricardo Adams, Andria Bryant, Judith Davis, Howard Eagle, Clifford Florence, Anthony Hall, Robert Hoggard, Beatriz Lebron, Amy Maloy and Willa Powell.

City Wants Local People for Good-Paying 2020 Census Jobs Mayor Lovely A. Warren and Monroe County Clerk Adam Bello, joined Jeff Behler Regional Director of the New York Region Census Center Tuesday to call for Rochester-area residents to apply for temporary field positions for the 2020 Census.

Mayor Warren and County Clerk Bello are members of the New York State Complete Count Commission.

“With these jobs, local residents have an opportunity earn a decent wage, gain valuable work experience and help us make sure our population is accurately reflected in the 2020 Census,” said Mayor Warren. “Our population determines the City of Rochester’s allotment of federal resources and political capital, which helps our residents thrive and reach their full potential. April Baskin Elected Youngest Chair in History of Erie County Legislature

A

ENDORSED! Tina Sanders, candidate for Fillmore District Councilmember, has been endorsed by SEIU 1199 Healthcare Union and the Latino Village Newspaper, a Westside community publication serving the Latina population in Buffalo and Erie County. She will appear on the June 25th Democratic Party Line.

pril Baskin, who represents the 2nd Legislative District, is the fourth woman to become Legislature chair and, at 36, is the youngest Chair in history and the only first term Legislator appointed to this position of leadership.

She now ranks as one of the more senior legislators in the Democratic caucus.

April’s election came during a special session on Monday, following the resignation of Peter Savage as chair to become a city judge. The new chairwoman won the podium by a vote of 8-2 in this election year, with all Legislature seats on the ballot this fall.

She was sworn in by newly appointed Chief Judge Hon. Craig Hannah. “ It’s an unexpected promotion that I intend to serve with diligence. Sam Radford, activist, organizer and president of the District Parent Coordinating Council (DPCC) is urging the community to come out and vote next Tuesday, May 7 in the School Board Election.

Why should the Black and Brown communities in particular go to the polls?

“First of all the majority of the children (in public schools) are our children (45% Black, 21% Hispanic). And when it’s all said and done we don’t want other people making decisions about our children without us having input."

“Secondly, right now historically things are going better in Buffalo Public Schools than they ever have,” he continued pointing to the increased graduation rate and high level of community and parent engagement. However he warned that "whether people accept it or not, Buffalo is being gentrified – and if we don’t pay attention we will look up and other people will come in and get all the benefits for the work we’ve done to make it better. We have to make sure we keep our seat at the table. We have a real good opportunity (in this election) to maintain a majority minority on the board – but we’ve got to come out and vote!”

“It’s probably one of the most important elections because we’ve got Sam Radford a superintendent and a school board working in the right direction. This is when people who don’t want to see us do well, pounce…this is what you see with Donald Trump. People don’t realize that Western New York is Trump territory…he won in every area in WNY except Buffalo (along with Sheriff Tim Howard). Most of the teachers who work in our system are Trump supporters,” he charged. “So we can’t pretend like we’re somewhere we ain’t. People have got to vote in this election so that we don’t move backwards!”

Low voter turnout during school board elections in the city is chronic, he said. On any given election day the voter turnout is between only 3% and 10%.

“So 3-10% of the people next week will be voting to elect representatives who will control a $1 billion school budget,” he noted.

That, he said, has to change. There is currently a movement to hold school board elections on the same day as the Primary elections to increase participation. School board elections in Rochester, for example, will be held on June 25th, Primary Election Day. He urged voters to cast their ballot for the candidate of their choice - even if that candidate is running unopposed, in order to show support and guarantee their win.

VOICE-Buffalo to Hold a Truth Commission on School Suspension Rates in Buffalo Public Schools VOICE-Buffalo will hold a Truth Commission on May 2, addressing the issue of the high number of school suspensions in Buffalo Public Schools that disproportionately affect African American students. While African Americans make up 47% of student enrollment, they make up 69% of suspensions. With the upcoming elections for the Buffalo School Board of Education on May 7th, this forum allows the community to hear parents positions on school suspensions and restorative practices. The Truth Commission will be held from 6-8 p.m. at East High School on 820 Northampton St., Buffalo, NY. For more info 716-842-6571.

Black Man Behind The History of Jack Daniels Whiskey Nathan “Near-

est” Green, born into slavery in 1820, was an African-American head stiller.

Emancipated after the Civil War, Nathan Nathan became Nearest Green a master distiller, teaching his techniques to Jack Daniel, founder of the Jack Daniel’s Tennessee whiskey distillery.

It is written that when Jack Daniel was a boy, he went to work for Dan Call: a preacher, grocer, and distiller. This is where he learned to operate a whiskey still.

Nearest Green was owned

by Landis & Green Company, who hired him out to work for Dan Call, the distiller. Green was one of a few enslaved people who continued to work for Call after slavery ended.

Jack Daniel’s and Nearest Green’s lives would cross when Call introduced Jack Daniel to Green saying: “Uncle Nearest is the best whiskey maker that I know of.”

Call then said to Nearest Green, “I want Jack to become the world’s best whiskey distiller—if he wants to be. You help me teach him.”

The rest is Black history.

Green served as master distiller. Only a few years older than Jack, Green taught him all about the still. He also played the fiddle and was a lively entertainer, a trait that was passed down to his son, Jesse Green.

In 1866, a year after slavery ended with ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, Daniel opened his distillery and immediately employed two of Nearest Green’s sons, George and Eli. Seven straight generations of Nearest Green’s descendants have worked for Jack Daniel’s Distillery, with three direct descendants continuing to work there as of November 2017.

I think students deserve to have an advocate who has spent time with them, not just as a parent or a teacher, but someone to help elevate their voice.

The Amistad Commission, a highly accredited curriculum consisting of the infusion of African American history into the daily curriculum has been on going for 3 years. In addition, we have the Culturally Linguistically Responsive Teaching model developed under the genius of Dr. Fatimah Morrell, while under the leadership of Superintendent Cash and watchful eye of some engaged board members. I would absolutely support a new task force to make new recommendations to curve the suspension rates. I would also be supportive of infusing African American history into the history curriculum. The Buffalo Public Schools would need to make certain that the changes to the curriculum would be supported for statewide testing. *The contract for Superintendent Kriner Cash expires in 2020. In general I would be supportive of extending the Superintendent’s contract. However, I would like the opportunity to review past evaluations from the previous board.

The number one issue for certain that Black students are disproportionately suspended more that any other student in the state of New York. The second is teacher diversity . The majority of our teachers are White suburban women who do not have a real connection to the Black and Brown children in this district.The third is course access- we need to know for sure that our children are getting the right coursesthey need to be college and career ready upon graduation.

*What do you see as the 3 most pressing issues facing Buffalo Public Schools today in order of importance?

Inequalities in schools (alignment and sustainability of resources); lack of diversity in teachers; low graduation rates.

*Would you support efforts to revitalize a task force and make the infusion of African and African American history a mandatory part of the curriculum??

Yes I would support such efforts. It is my plan to totally eliminate out of school suspensions. There is nothing that proves that out of school suspensions are beneficial to the students. When it comes to school discipline, BPS has the highest suspension rate in the entire state. *The contract for Superintendent Kriner Cash expires in 2020. Do you support keeping Dr. Cash on board?

Yes, I would vote to keep Dr. Kriner Cash on Board because he has a clear vision for this district. I believe he is a great leader. He knows what is needed to make sure students are learning.

He is not afraid to set goals or take risks.

Absolutely, to revitalize a task force to focus on the issue of suspensions and investigate the problem of why a higher number of African American children are suspended is critical.

African American history is important to infuse into the school curriculum because it allows all children to learn about the contributions that were made

by African Americans throughout history and the world. It is a learning experience for African American children to feel good about themselves, change mindsets about myths learned about African Americans, particularly negative myths learned from their parents and others. African American children should be expected to be great, and others should expect them to be great as well. *The contract for Superintendent Kriner Cash expires in 2020. Do you support keeping Dr. Cash on board?

Absolutely, Dr. Cash has made great strides with Buffalo Public Schools since he's been Buffalo's Superintendent.

am running for several reasons, but in the largest picture, our American democracy depends on qualified citizens stepping up to serve and lead, so that's what I'm doing.

My previous service was as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Thailand.

I taught English at a rural high school there for two years.

am running for an AtLarge Seat to represent all of our schools and all of our students, regardless of zip code, race, country of origin, primary language, and what they believe in. Buffalo Public Schools are on the rise, but we have a lot of work to do.

It is a personal responsibility of mine to be part of the important work of moving Buffalo Public Schools forward with others to provide quality, access, and opportunity for all of our students.

The three most pressing issues facing the new board are making sure that the new BTF-BPS contract is fair to all stakeholders, renewing Superintendent Cash's contract and improving the graduate rate/decreasing the dropout rate, particularly among refugee/immigrant students. While a BPS-wide graduation rate of 64% is good, it is still below the national average of 82%. We can get there (and do even better!). *Would you support efforts to revitalize a task force and make the infusion of African and African American history a mandatory part of the curriculum?

Former Superintendent Reville's task force was a good idea and I would support revitalizing such an initiative. To address this issue at the local level as a board member, I would ... include the voices of the students who have been suspended in the conversation. As for making African and African-American history a mandatory part of the K-12 curriculum, I must admit that I thought it was already, so if it isn't, I'd say it's a good idea. *The contract for Superintendent Kriner Cash expires in 2020. I would vote to renew him for many reasons, one of which is that we need stability at the top

Absolutely, we need accountability and oversight on the issue of suspensions. During a special legislative session held recently at the Erie County Legislature, Howard J. Johnson, Jr. was sworn-in as the Legislator for the 1st Legislative District. Legislator Johnson was selected to fill the vacancy created when Legislator Barbara Miller-Williams resigned to become interim City of Buffalo Comptroller.

Legislator Johnson previously served as a management consultant in the Erie County Division of Budget and Management. Prior to his county service, Legislator Johnson worked for many years in the private banking sector at M&T Bank and HSBC Bank, and also honorably served for ten years in the Army National Guard.

“I am honored to receive this appointment and look forward to serving the residents of the 1st Legislative District, where I’ve been proud to live for so many years. The support of my fellow Democratic committee members in making this endorsement means so much to me, and I’m grateful to my Legislature colleagues for their support in accepting the recommendation.

The account, which garnered humor, judgment, and awareness to what some describe as a pretty shocking phenomenon, features celebrity pastors like Carl Lentz, Judah Smith, Chad Veach, Steven Furtick, and Rich Wilkerson, Jr. with shoes that cost from a few hundred dollars up to $5,000. *Carl Lentz, the pastor at the New York campus of global mega church Hillsong who baptized Justin Bieber in a professional basketball player’s bath tub appeared wearing a pair of Nike Air Fear of God sneakers that were selling online for $500.

Telling the Story: Enslavement of African People in the United States is New Exhibit at Downtown Library The Buffalo & Erie County Public Library’s downtown Central Library at 1 Lafayette Square will showcase various items from its History of Slavery collection in a new exhibit entitled Telling the Story: Enslavement of African People in the United States. This free exhibit, housed in the Library’s main floor Rare Book Room and Ring of Knowledge, will be on view during all Library operating hours, as of Saturday, May 4, for approximately one year.

Included in the exhibit: •An historical overview of enslavement in the United States from 1619 to Emancipation; •Original documents including a bill of sale for an enslaved person, auction advertisements, a freed man’s certificate, anti-slavery sermons, debates and court cases; •First-person narratives by Frederick Douglass, Solomon Northup, Phillis Wheatley, Olaudah Equiano, and William Wells Brown, and •Creative works on the subject of enslavement including poetry, music and the first edition of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

Additional display material highlighting local stories of individuals and their efforts to assist freedom seekers via the Underground Railroad will be installed in the Library’s main floor Ring of Knowledge. Supplemental material regarding these displays and the Library’s collection will also be available through the Library website, www.BuffaloLib.org.

A committee of local historians, educators and community leaders provided the Library constructive input for the creation of this exhibit. A series of programs with related content will take place at the Central Library during the display year.

Why I'm Endorsing Jeffrey Conrad

I wholeheartedly, support mandatory inclusion of African and African American history in the curriculum. I think Buffalo Public Schools have made great strides in this inclusion.

The Buffalo Board of Education will be electing all 9 members of this board on Tuesday, May 7th. There are 6 district seats as well as the 3 soon- to -be vacant, At Large positions. There are 8 candidates running for the At Large seats.

I am writing on the unique qualifications of Jeffrey Conrad, one of the candidates I am supporting . Mr. Conrad is a former Buffalo common council member and the Chief Executive Officer of the Center for Employment Opportunities, a self-help agency for former felons who needed assistance with re entering the community, job assistance, medical care, remedial education or in earning a GED. In addition, based on his long history of advocacy and effectiveness, Jeffrey Conrad was selected by this writer to chair the newly created Erie County Safe Street Initiative to address the city's high homicide rate, when I chaired the Erie County Legislature, in 2012.

Today, Mr. Conrad runs Catholic Charities' education and training program at 1001 E. Delavan Ave., in the old American Betty Jean Axle Plant. This program currently assists GRANT our community's young men and women to prepare for the math and literacy tests that are required by the Northland Corridor Training Program. In assisting these students, he discovered that many of them were coming to the training program hungry. So what did he do? Why, he opened a food pantry that feed them at work and allow them to take food home to their families!

So, it is for these and other reasons, I am supporting Jeffrey Conrad for Buffalo School Member At-Large in the May 7th election.

Being the only Member At-Large candidate who was a Buffalo Public Schools educator, Heard knows the sociological and psychological barriers that our students and teachers face in the classrooms. Heard also understands the fiscal responsibility to our districts. As a Court Liaison who heard over 40,000 felony cases, as a Correctional Officer, and a Child Care Counselor, Heard knows our children's future if we don't elect a strong, vocal, working leader who cares about their education.

Heard's goals reflect the goals of students, parents, and teachers he has meet while collecting signatures - to bring pride to Buffalo Public Schools. The Process at Work

I was encouraged by Buffalo Bills 2019 NFL Draft selections, especially Ed Oliver out of Houston at defensive tackle.

Oliver has a h i g h m o tor and can be moved from defensive tackle to possibly nose guard a n d can be a tough individual to handle in a pass rushing situation. I would have selected Jawaan Taylor right tackle out of Florida. The Bills also had an opportunity to draft Alabama tight end Irv Smith, Jr., whose father was a successful NFL player and reminds me of Ossie Newsome with his blocking and pass catching skills. He

could have made a big difference in the passing game and could have been a major asset for Bills QB Josh Allen. Instead the Bills chose offensive tackle Cody Ford who seems to be a pass blocking specialist after blocking for Heisman Trophy winners Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray.

They both are mobile QB’s that like to move around in the pocket and can make plays once the play breaks down, which bodes well for a QB like Bills Josh Allen.

The Bills passed on all the wide receivers including my pick of Riley Ridley and most likely will bring some receivers in among the undrafted free agents that will be announced by the team in the coming days.

The Bills have signed former UB QB Tyree Jackson and defensive back Cam Lewis. These signings along with the other eight undrafted free agents will be announced soon. I also like wide receiver David Stills out

How about New York Giants General Manager David Gettleman drafting a White QB out of Duke, Daniel Jones known for throwing interceptions while passing on Ohio State QB Dwayne Hoskins, who has a 70% passer rating while Jones was only 59.9% rating!

Jones threw 29 interceptions while Haskins 9 interceptions.

Haskins was the best QB in the draft and was picked at 15th overall. Jones picked at 6th overall is clear that Black QB’s are still stereotyped as not being as good as marginal White QB’s. Dave Gettleman is in his mid 70’s and could not let go of old school racist stereotypes against Black QB’s and just set the Giants back another two to three years; especially after trading away star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Gettleman did not like an unapologetic Black man on the Giants football team voicing his own opinions and hurried up and traded him away, severely handicapping his team for the upcoming season.

The Bill Polians and David Gettlemans of the NFL world are dinosaurs, they’re backwards thinking of Blacks not being capable of being leaders is straight out of the 1950’s and 1960’s where people of color stayed in their place and did as they were told by wWhite folks.

New York Giants ownership and management just allowed an outdated old man to ruin their football team for years to come. It’s only fitting since they fired two time Super Bowl Champion General Manager Jerry Reese (African American) and replaced him with days gone by Dave Gettleman!

Cierra Dillard Drafted to WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx

Rochester native and UB Bulls Star player Cierra Dillard's draft was recently announced in the 2nd round pick No. 20 overall for WNBA ‘s Minnesota Lynx.

She is noted as one of the best players male or female to ever hail from Rochester.

Dillard became just the third player from Section V to be drafted by a WNBA team.

There are only 36 people selected in the world for this draft opportunity.

Dillard was second in the nation in scoring at 25.2 points per game and her 856 points were not only a school record (as was her scoring average) but also a new Mid- American Conference mark. She also led the nation in made free throws (233) and attempts (287).

Camp Joy The Lutheran Church of Our Savior Camp JOY 2019, at 26 Brunswick Blvd will be held July 8 through August 16. The camp is open to boys and girls, kindergarten through 6th grade.

Camp JOY is a structured summer day camp program with enrichment activities that develop and stimulate the mind and the body.
