The Gus Macker Returns to Rochester!

The Gus Macker 3 on 3 basketball tourney makes it third year downtown Rochester on June 29th and 30th. Held in the shadow of the legendary Blue Cross Arena on Court St and the downtown Riverside Festival site, the event features not only a competitive tournament for all ages and skill levels but also awesome family activities all day, both days. The Roc will be jamming as the Macker shares the downtown scene with the Rochester International Jazz Fest which include top jazz artists and many free shows.

All basketball games will feature paid referees to insure quality play and sportsmanship. The tournament will host evenly matched brackets for all age groups 8 to 80 years old. Everyone will have the opportunity to test their skill with our Free-Throw and 3-point Shooting Contest. High flying athletes can showcase their “hops” with the Dunk Contest that is certain to create a new “hoop-legend” instantly.

The Roc Gus Macker will feature local talented youth on our performing arts stage at the event.

These outstanding youth will display their artistic talents to entertain Macker fans and provide enjoyment for all throughout the weekend.

"Ron" Wofford, photographer, writer, and communications professional active in Buffalo’s cultural scene for decades, made his transition on Thursday, June 20. Friends may call Thomas T. Ron served as production director for Sunship Communications, an early provider of public access television based on the city’s East Side in the 1970s and 1980s. He also worked as a producer, reporter, and on-air host of programs on WIVB, WKBW, and WGR TV and as a freelance music and drama critic for area newspapers. Before his retirement, he was active for many years with the Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA). His work as a photographer was featured in the Burchfield Penney’s 50th anniversary exhibition and in an exhibition at the Niagara Arts & Cultural Center (NACC). Ron, who was also an actor who performed with Ed Smith's Black Theater Workshop in the 70's, wrote and contributed photography to the Challenger for many years.

May his amazingly talented soul rest forever in the Eternal Fields of Peace.

wo years ago, Rhonda A Ricks, PhD., the head of Buffalo’s first certified minority and woman owned development firm, was joined by the community and top state officials in celebration of the opening of Parkview Apartments; an $8 million project that converted the vacant Public School 59 building in the East Side community across from MLK Park, to 26 units of affordable apartments for low-income residents.

It was a dream come true for the visionary young developer, who saw the need to create safe, affordable places to live for all city residents.

Last week, on June 19, Dr. Ricks lost her long battle with cancer at the age of 56. She made her transition not long after the start of the next phase of her $50 million signature project “The Forge on Broadway” into a mixed-income development with 158 affordable apartments. The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 26, 2019 at 11 AM at True Bethel Baptist Church, 907 E. Ferry St., where a Celebration of Life will follow at 12 Noon. Bishop Darius G. Pridgen officiating.

Aside from being president and CEO of R+A+R Development, Dr. Ricks founded Inclusion Development Associates Inc., which helped monitor large-scale public projects to make sure they met requirements for hiring woman and minority owned firms. She was compliance monitor on Buffalo’s $1 billion dollar school reconstruction project and before that did community outreach for LPCiminelli, helping the company win the contract for the restoration project.

-She Will be Missed by ManyThere has been an outpouring of love and response from the community on social pages from friends, colleagues and people she inspired. NYS Assembly Majority Leader Crystal PeoplesStokes wrote on her Facebook page: "I am devastated by this loss and will miss this beautiful, intelligent and God-fearing woman …I know she's in a better place." Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown praised her in a Facebook post as “a pioneer, a barrier breaker and an inspiration…Her legacy will live on through her projects.”

pril McCants-Baskin easily defeated her opponent Duncan E. Kirkwood in the race for the 2nd Legislative District seat.

In the race for the 1st Legislative District seat, Howard Johnson handed his challenger Katrina Martina a sound defeat.

-The Common Council RacesIn the hotly contested race for the Masten Council seat incumbent Ulysees O. Wingo trounced all three of his opponents gathering 49% of the vote to Nate Boyd’s 29%; Veronica Golden’s 11% and Jennifer L. Strickland’s 11% .

No surprises in University as the popular incumbent Rasheed N. Wyatt beat his opponent Kathryne E.A. Franco 67% to 33 % .

It was a horse race for the Fillmore District Council seat with Mitch Nowakowski emerging the winner with 36% of the vote to Gerhardt C. Yaskow’s 26%; Tina Sanders 24%; and Pharaoh V. Paige’s 13%.

In the race for the Lovejoy District Council seat, newcomer Esther Smothers was defeated

by Bryan J. Bollman 63% to Smothers’ 37%.

Frederick Douglass Historic July 4Th Speech On July 4, 1776, THE Declaration of Independence was signed, marking the colonists independence from Great Britain. One historian notes that at least 5,000 Black men fought for the Continental Army against the British, men who believed that freedom from Britain would ultimately result in their freedom from slavery.

Not so. It took another war – The Civil War – which led to the Emancipation Proclamation that was signed January 1, 1863 .. By the end of the war, over 200,000 African-Americans would serve in the Union army and navy.

The Proclamation initially freed only enslaved Africans in the rebellious Southern states . Finally The 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery in the entire United States, was passed on December 6th, 1865.

FREDERICK DOUGLASS SPEECH Freedom fighter, Frederick Douglass was born into slavery. On the day after an Independence Day celebration in Corinthian Hall, Rochester, New York on July 5, 1852, he gave an uncompromising speech (Africans were still enslaved). The title was “The Meaning of July 4th for the Negro,” as he boldly declarled: "This Fourth of July Continued Page 11

72 Philadelphia Cops Taken Off the Streets

In Philadelphia, the police commissioner pulled 72 officers from the streets and said some would be fired. In Phoenix, the chief gave some officers “nonenforcement” duty. In St. Louis, the top prosecutor said she would no longer accept cases from 22 officers.

The reason: A catalog of bigoted social media posts by members of law enforcement that has led to upheaval at departments across the country and undermined longstanding efforts to improve interactions between police officers and the people they serve.-NYT

Hearing on H.R. 40 Puts Reparations Debate in National Spotlight An historic hearing took place on Capitol Hill last week - the first time Congress has considered a bill, H.R. 40, that would create a commission to develop proposals to address the lingering effects of the enslavement of Africans in America and consider a “national apology” for the harm it has caused.

According to William A. Darity Jr., a professor of public policy at Duke University who is writing a book on reparations, “We have not had a conversation about reparations on this scale or level since the Reconstruction Era." In 1989, Representative John Conyers Jr., who retired in 2017, introduced legislation to create a commission to develop proposals for reparations. He introduced it every year for nearly 30 years. It went nowhere. Even President Barack Obama opposed reparations, calling the idea impractical. The June 19th hearing was laden with symbolism.

This year is the 400th anniversary of the first documented arrival of Africans to the port of Jamestown in what was then the colony of Virginia. Wednesday, June 19, was Juneteenth, the holiday that celebrates the end of slavery in the United States.

And the bill carries the designation H.R. 40, a reference to “40 acres and a mule.”

NNPA-Leaders of numerous African American organizations recently convened in the District to deal with the upcoming 2020 census that could affect available resources and the political representation of Blacks in the century’s third decade.

Melanie Campbell, president and CEO of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation and the convener of the Black Women’s Roundtable, had the leaders of key African American and civil rights organizations meet on June 18 at the Hyatt Regency Wash-

ington on Capitol Hill to talk about the 2020 Census and its importance to Blacks.

HEALTH MATTERS Infection-Fighting Herbs

Germs are everywhere. Some take up residence in our bodies and do us good, such as the friendly bacteria that colonize the linings of the intestines, upper respiratory tract and lower urinary system, out –competing bad microbes, contributing to immune defense and good digestion. Other microbes-viruses, bacteria, parasites-wreak havoc when they invade our bodies.

Fortunately, a number of herbs have antimicrobial effects.

Many of these herbs are culinary herbs and spices, such as garlic, ginger, thyme and cinnamon. That means, no matter where you are, you can probably find a herbal ally at the local grocery store.

•Garlic promotes immune function and has antibacterial activity. It also tackles fungi and parasites.

•Ginger has scientific backing as an anti-nausea agent. It may offer other benefits to those stricken with infections and diarrhea. Ginger has antifungal activity against the yeast Candida albicans. It also discourages intestinal worms. It may be best to consume ginger raw or in the tincture or capsule form.

•Cinnamon has antibacterial and antihelminthic (anti-worm) effects. Other culinary spices and herbs that fit into this category include clove, nutmeg, chili peppers (including cayenne), horse radish, cumin, and tamarind.

•Echinacea has some antiviral and antibacterial properties.

•Black Elderberry and Licorice are two other herbs to keep handy during the cold and flu season. Elderberry has antiviral activity against influenza viruses and enhances immune function. Licorice root is demulcent (soothing), expectorant (expels respiratory mucus), antiviral, and immune enhancing.

•Cranberry taken as a juice or concentrated in tablet form, interferes with bacterial adherence to bladder lining, thus preventing infection.

-A Message of Divine GuidancePeace Be Unto You All the praise belongs to the most high Creator who is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and that everything and everyone belongs to and submits to Him (surah 57:1-3).

We are very happy to announce that since we started publishing The Straight Path, everything that is said and written came from Him. We do not believe in the opinion nor the sayings of any other when it comes to the Path of the Most High. Surah (96:1-5) proves that mankind knew nothing until he was taught, hence the reason we use only His words.

Deuteronomy (28:14) and Surah (2:136) are our inspiration.

By the will (James 4:15 & Surah 18:23-24) and mercy of the Creator who has chosen the Challenger for His words to reach you because without Him it may not have happened. We will continue that way. Obviously we are a people who still does not know who we are Deuteronomy (32:26-30), and our intentions are enlightenment. It is very uncommon to be ignorant of oneself. If that which is common is falsehood, should it not be addressed in an effort to correct? Is it not that being done?

Surah (6:15) Exactly! Surah (6:33).

We have learned that the messengers and the guidance from before should be followed (Surah 6:84-91) and in doing so we discovered some irregularities in our everyday practices and in order to be on the path we adjusted.

The following verses, (Surah’s 11:17-18, 42:15), we seriously considered. It is what we stand for because we mean well for everyone and it should be the desire of all of us. We are in the process of putting all the facts together which was and still withheld from us (Surah 2:159-160), until such a time when our Creator brings us together of those who he has chosen (Deuteronomy 7:6-8) (Surah 44:30-33, 45:16-18). In verses 16-18 we see the Creator is telling the Prophet Muhammad that he should follow that which was given to the Children of Israel. The path of those who were before is the way to go. Marie Watson, born on June 26, 1919 in White Springs Florida, is the eldest of 7 children born to the late John and Lizzie Lewis. On June 26 (Wednesday) she will celebrate her 100th birthday!

Mother Watson is the eldest mother in the district she participates in the Mother Board, Auxiliary Board and Choir while providing for family she enjoyed being involved in the community.

She served as a member of Block Club organized by the late Rosa Gibson for over two decades, including the CAO, Crime Watch and Night Out. Her secret to longevity? Always putting the Lord first in all things; being thankful during good and bad times and treating everyone right! She has been blessed with 14 Grandchildren, 32 Great Grandchildren and 11 Great-Great Grandchildren.

While Americans Celebrate Day Of Independence, A Buffalo-Born Artist Will Celebrate The Legacy Of Harriet Tubman

He had the idea for his eclectic art exhibition after penning a revenge-fantasy fiction novel titled Harriet Tubman vs. America, which depicts Tubman as a literal "Harriet and the North Star," a freedom fighter. between Edreys “It’s a comic book-inspired version of Harriet Tubman. What would she be doing?’” The results of these ruminations shaped the art exhibition titled Harriet Tubman: Past, Present & Future, which, as the title suggests, explores Tubman’s legacy in the mid-nineteenth century, but also speculates how Harriet might have influenced American culture if she were alive and active today—or even in the distant future.

“I did an illustration of Harriet as a recruit of The Black Panther Party and then as part of The Black Panther Marvel universe. I even illustrated her as the CEO of a start-up company,” Jordan recalled. He posted his work on Facebook to see how people would react and it took off from there. He began receiving contributions from other artists, some from far away as Uganda, Madagascar, Mauritius and even from one artist residing in Warsaw, Poland.

As he saw his role expanding from artist to curator, Jordan took the growing body of work to Itah Sadu, the Executive Director of A Different Booklist Cultural Centre, a non-profit culture center dedicated to the history of people of African and Caribbean ancestry. “Itah understood the concept immediately,” Jordan said. “They do a lot to spread black history in Toronto.

Even though they’re not a traditional gallery, they were the logical choice for this exhibition.”

Every year, A Different Booklist organizes in conjunction with the Toronto Transportation Commission (TTC) the Underground Railroad Freedom Train ride in celebration of Emancipation Day (August 1st), when the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 ended slavery throughout most of the British Empire. This festive event features talks and singing aboard the TTC subway, which runs overnight from July 31st to August 1st. However, for 2019, Itah recognized that the Harriet Tubman: Past, Present & Future exhibition would be a perfect prologue to Emancipation Day—and a perfect counterpoint to Independence Day, when America declared independence from the British monarchy but nevertheless continued its institution of chattel slavery.

Two City Honors seniors have been named Jackie Robinson Foundation) Scholars.

Mary Tess Wright and Alexis Marshall will be awarded $7,000 per year for their four years of college for a total of $28,000 each.

Mary Tess will attend Morgan State University to major in mathematics with a concentration in statistics.

Alexis will attend Columbia University as a neuroscience and public health major.

The new Explore & More Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Children’s Museum at Canalside will be open daily to the public starting this Thursday (June 27). In May a soft-opening period saw the building open only on weekends. hen you think of charter schools, how often do you think that the school culture is aligned with how students exhibit integrity? Well, at WNY Maritime Charter School, cadets are encouraged to not only become the example of what success looks like, academically, but students are able to engage in many aspects of leadership. From ranking officers to various sporting events, and most recently a High School Victory of A'Truss, these are just some of the powerful leadership opportunities that help our cadets blossom.

A'Truss was started when a few of the female cadets were not seeing eye-to-eye on some issues.Their substitute teacher just happened to be there on the right day in order to help out with their issues. Mrs. Ingram (aka Solar: The Community’s Daughter), has been subbing at Maritime all year, and has come to be called “mom” by many of the cadets.

In a plot to show the young ladies that they had more in common than they believed, Mrs. Ingram gave up her lunch time to spend quality time with a handful of blossoming cadets, talking through issues, and sparking conversations that allowed this small group of budding leaders to see their culture within education.

The group of young woman, who are known to be the example of A'Truss, came together and designed an image of themselves mimicking a national door decoration trend. This venture also will allow them to experience and introduce the culture of Maritime to their community, as well as hold them accountable for their actions as future leaders.

We would like to thank Mrs. Cathy Oldenburg, the Commandant of WNY Maritime Charter School for supporting her cadets and providing them with diverse opportunities These experiences have matured the students and enhanced their learning environment, with discipline, structure and a well-rounded education. I would encourage you to look into both the Middle School and High School of WNY Maritime Charter School.

A Response to the Continued Campaign to Malign the CAO Dear Editor and Greetings Everyone, The Buffalo News continues to wage its campaign of innuendo and slander against the CAO. Now the “newspaper” seeks to imply impropriety because the CAO’s Head Start administration used a nationally recognized, highly qualified minority-owned consultant firm to provide portions of its staff development, professional development, accreditation services and parent engagement services over an eleven year period.

Please see our response to this latest Buffalo News effort below: As always, you and your associates attempt to take something ordinary and make it appear extraordinary and negative. J. Walker Enterprises (JWE) is a staff-development trainer, consultant, parent-engagement trainer, and provider of child-development accreditation certification that Head Start services across the country utilize.

Further, given a $33 million annual Head Start/Early Head Start budget, spending an average of $191,000 a year on training that is crucial to our 600 employees in these programs is smart and effective. If we spent say an average of $25,000 a year on training, you’d write stories saying our staff is insufficiently trained.

Phyllis McBride’s qualifications to lead our Head Start administration are significant. All head administrators of Head Start programs are approved by the federal office of Head Start.

Providing the training, staff and parent development for 600 employees would require an additional standing workforce of people with different skill sets being made available episodically over the course of a year. Working with an outside consultant agency that has a workforce that can be platooned to different programs across the country, that we can schedule at mutually agreeable times, is a more efficient and cost-effective use of our resources.

Over the course of 2009-2020, the CAO contracted with JWE for roughly $2.1 million of staff and parent development services, or about $191,000 average per year, of an annual head start/early head start budget of around $33 million per year. More than $400,000 of that $2.1 million cost was for tuition payments to JWE for enrollments in its Child Development Associate’s certification course in the 2017-2018 year. JWE is not only a highly regarded and qualified vendor of these services, it is also a minority-owned enterprise that provides a large base of in-kind services in support of the work they do.

Our Head Start/Early Head Start program was engaged in a campaign to hire staff with higher credentials to meet Health and Human Services goals, and to help existing staff acquire newly required credentials. JWE demonstrated the ability to help our agency achieve those objectives and our Head Start administrator began working with JWE to pursue those goals.

Our Head Start administration initially contracted with JWE for staff development services that included professional development, a leadership development series with content-area specialists, program re-organization assistance, and the agency’s nomination for a Program of Excellence designation, ultimately received from Gov. Patterson in 2010.

As our Head Start administration worked more with JWE, it discovered JWE’s capabilities were also used by other Head Starts around the country. Our contractual relationship expanded to include staff training and development, education leading to a required Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential, Program Self-Assessment, Family Development Credentialing (FDC), Economic Development, Strategic Planning, Strategic Implementation, Leadership Development, Program Branding, and assistance in grant writing, Policy Council and Board training.

Through the contracts with JWE, the Head Start administration won funding from the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act stimulus program; assistance in writing a grant leading to the CAO’s acquisition of the former Niagara County Head Start/Early Head Start 5-year grant; and the 5-year Early Child Care Partnership grant for Erie and Niagara counties, resulting in securing more than $22 million and new grants for child care and staff training and development.

JWE is a nationally utilized staff-training and program-development service organization with 20 years of experience. JWE’s professional development, staff development and parent engagement programs use JWE’s own curriculum, tailored to the needs of the agency being served. The Head Start Administrator, Ms. McBride, has considered mounting these development accreditation and the related needs identified earlier, by hiring one or two staff members internally. However, the ancillary costs of training materials, part-time temporary staff and the capacity to meet the needs of 600+ pre-school and early childhood staff made that option impractical and more expensive than using a contractual service.

JWE’s daily rate is about $3,000, which includes all of the staff needed to provide the training and development services (excluding the tuition cost for students taking courses leading to a Child Development Associate’s credential or a Family Development Credential). The per-student tuition cost for those courses is $1,850, which can be compared to the $2,400 typical tuition cost per student charged by certification institutions in our area.

Ms. McBride utilizes various resources as needed to respond to staff, parent and grantor agency wants and emerging requirements. However, there are no new trainings scheduled, involving JWE this year.

The issues you raise regarding the background matters you cite, did not arise in any of our discussions with or about JWE. Ms. McBride met Julian Walker in the context of the work he provided to the agency under our contractual service with JWE. A subsidiary business of JWE is operated by J. Walker’s son, Julian, who is the creator of and provider of a parent development course, called Encouraging Parent Engagement Curriculum (EPEC). Our Head Start administration believed EPEC would be useful in helping to achieve the agency’s parent-involvement goals. As a result of these trainings, the number of hours parents engaged with their children in our Head Start/Early Head Start academies increased significantly.

The most heralded of them being Zion Williamson. From high school/ Instagram sensation to the top high school recruit in the nation. Zion has made believers out of all comers while turning some into Duke Blue Devils’ fans. During his Freshman year at the college basketball powerhouse, Zion seemed to be unstoppable except for the “loss” he took to a pair of Nikes. But even after all the accolades and a great season he was still consumed with an overwhelming pressure. This was a weight he had been carrying since he was young boy and no matter how many achievements he had garnered there would be one above all others that he cherished. On Thursday, June 20th the next LeBron was not called out as the Pelicans’ selection for the number one draft pick of 2019.

No that illustrious denomination belonged to none other than the first Zion to enter the NBA. And while millions watched on tv we saw a young man let go of all the heaviness he had been walking around with for years and thank the lady that had been pushing him through it all. His mother! Zion’s dream to be the number one pick had been realized but he could not say a word as the reporter questioned him.
