Organization officially announces the festival date and entertainment line-up for the 8th Annual Afrikan American Festival. Plan for Mayoral Control of Schools Dead For Now A “Mayoral Intervention” plan for the Buffalo Public School District put forth by Buffalo Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples Stokes, an ally of Speaker Carl Heastie, is dead for now. In May, Peoples-Stokes drafted a two-year proposal that would allow the mayor to appoint a superintendent, and the nine member board of education. The Buffalo Public School District has had four superintendents in five years, and infighting over how a new leader should be chosen spurred Peoples-Stokes’ proposal.

Darren Brown Named Interim Superintendent for Buffalo Public Schools Darren Brown, 41, a longtime administrator for the Buffalo School District and currently the head of the District’s Human Resources Department, was appointed Interim Superintendent for the Buffalo Public Schools at the Board of Education’s June 24 meeting.

Among his immediate duties, Mr. Brown will oversee the summer program, prepare for the beginning of the next school year, and deal with pressing personnel issues student placement and state mandates.

Mr. Brown thanked the board for their confidence in him to fill the position and said that he would serve as interim for as long as the District needs him to.

“My key goal is to make sure that I sustain the improvements we’ve made in the last year under Superintendent Ogilvie,” he said. “We’ve learned a great deal.”

He said that at this time he was not a candidate for the permanent job as Superintendent.

In addition to having an MBA, Mr. Brown holds a school administrator certifice and an advanced certificate in school business and human resource administration from the University at Buffalo.

Hon. Peoples-Stokes Denies Reports That She’s “Looking for a Job”

eports that Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples-Stokes is lobbying to be named director of the University at Buffalo’s Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) are “totally false” according to her office.

“The Educational Opportunity Center already has an excellent Executive Director in Dr. Julius Adams,” said Assemblywoman Peoples Stokes. “I am not seeking or lobbying for the position. Dr. Adams is doing a great job and should stay in the role as long as he likes. The EOC on Ellicott street is providing opportunities for people who want to engage in the economy in Buffalo, the 2015 commencement highlighted this. Unfortunately this rumor is creating a buzz that should be focused on the great initiatives underway at the EOC,” she continued. “I am grateful to serve the people of the 141st Hon. Peoples-Stokes Assembly District and look forward to doing so in the future.”

Assembly Member Peoples-Stokes, has served New York State’s 141st Assembly district since 2003. Rising through the ranks in the Assembly, she holds a position of leadership serving as Chair of the Assembly’s Majority Conference. In spring of 2013, she was elected as Chair of the New York State Association of Black & Puerto Rican Legislators, with the responsibility of organizing the annual conference weekend.

School Board Member Belton-Cottman Talks About Why She’s Seeking the Masten District Seat

A

ll nine Council seats will be up for election this year, but none will probably be more closely watched than the race in the Masten District.

A few weeks ago Mayor Byron W. Brown appointed Masten Councilman Demone Smith as the director of the Buffalo Employment and Training Center (BETC). The appointment was effective upon Smith’s resignation from the Buffalo Common Council on June 26.

Since that announcement at least three persons are reported to have expressed an interest in running for that seat despite the outrageously short time left to gather enough signatures to get on the ballot: School Board Member Sharon M. Belton-Cottman, Ulysees O. Wingo and DeMario J. Badger. Mr. Wingo is a substitute school teacher and Program coordinator at Buffalo Promise Neighborhood. Mr. Badger unsuccessfully ran against Smith in 2011.

Belton-Cottman is the only female seeking to run so far. And if sucBelton-Cottman cessful, will most likely be the only woman seated on the council.

She is also the highest profile individual, leaving some to wonder why an outspoken fighter for the city’s school children on the Board of education would want to leave that position to go into city politics.

“The primary reason I’m running is that I believe it’s time for someone with an independent voice…its time for a change.”

Former Masten Councilmember Smith Comments on Decision to Take Job at BERC

T

he announcement a few weeks ago that Mayor Brown had appointed Masten Councilmember Demone Smith to head the Buffalo Employment and Training Center (BETC) came as surprise to many in this community– especially his constituents in the Masten District.

Mr. Smith, who resigned from the Common Council on June 26, served 12 years in elected government – eight of those years in the Council and at the time of his departure, was the Counncil Majority Leader.

But despite rumors concerning his recent appointment, Smith insists that he took the position - because it was just time to move on.

“We were able to get the District to a point where it was in a really good Demone Smith position…I felt I had done my work (as an elected official). My kids are getting older and I want to spend more time in their development,” said the active scoutmaster.

His position at BETC is a good fit, he said. “Getting people jobs is what I enjoy.That’s what’s needed now and that’s whats going to change this city,” he continued. “Plus, I’ve always liked new challenges.” His new position he noted will give him a chance to “work on a whole new group of skills” and make a difference in the lives of people by providing employment and training.

“Every job I’ve worked, I’ve had a history of succeeding.” This new job, he says, will be no Continued Page 14

The African-Chinese Connection Part I A group of researchers set out to prove that Chinese people evolved from homo erectus independently from all other humans, but their DNA testing also found that early Chinese civilizations were composed of Africans.

Back in 2005, Chinese DNA specialist Jin Li collected and analyzed more than 12,000 DNA samples from 165 different ethnic groups and found stunning similarities in people of Southeast Asia with Africans. “We did not see even one single individual that could be considered as a descendent of the homo erectus in China, rather, everybody was a descendent of our ancestors from Africa,” the DNA specialist stated.

Earliest Skeletal Remains in China Are From Black People A vast collection of studies have taken a look at the oldest human skeletal remains found thus far in China and reached a similar conclusion — the remains are from “Negro people.” The Archaeology of Ancient China notes that “Negroid skeletons dating to the early periods of Southern Chinese history have been found in Shangdong, Jiantung, Sichuan, Yunnan, Pearl River delta and Jiangxi.” This not only serves as evidence of an early African presence but the varying locations also point to just how widespread Black people were throughout China.

Former Democratic state Sen. Malcolm Smith was sentenced Wednesday to seven years in prison in a scheme to bribe his way onto the ballot for the 2013 New York City mayoral election.

U.S. District Judge Kenneth Karas agreed with the defense that unlike other recent public corruption cases there was no evidence Smith lined his own pockets. But the judge called his crime no less serious, saying, “What makes this case different from the others was the corruption of the process.”

Smith, 52, chose not to address the court and had no visible reaction when he heard the sentence. But in a letter to the judge, he insisted his only motivation was to achieve his dream of becoming mayor.

President Obama Poised to Commute Sentences for Scores of Nonviolent Drug Offenders President Barack Obama is slated to sign orders in the next few weeks to release scores of federal inmates imprisoned on nonviolent drug charges, reports The New York Times.

Upon signing the orders, Obama will likely reduce more sentences at one time than any president in nearly 50 years, the report says. The total number of commutations for Obama’s historic presidency could surpass 80, but more than 30,000 federal inmates have come forward in response to his administration’s call for clemency applications, writes the news outlet.

The move is part of a broader effort by the president to right excesses of the past, when elected officials seeking to be tough on crime imprisoned scores of mostly young African-American and Hispanic men for minor crimes.

“Nineteenth-century historians participated in this cover-up as well. Most of them ignored the institution of convict transportation to America, and those who did recognize it usually claimed that most of the people who were transported were political prisoners. Not until 1896, when an article on convict transportation by J. D. Butler appeared in the American Historical Review, did this thinking begin to change. Butler pointed out that the majority of convicts shipped to America during the colonial period were decidedly not political prisoners and that their numbers were much higher than previously reported. After the appearance of Butler’s essay, historians in the twentieth century finally began to research convict transportation to America in a serious and systematic way.

“Today, historians of convict transportation to America have settled on much higher numbers than those cited in the nineteenth century. Of the 585,800 immigrants to the thirteen colonies during the years 1700-1775, about 52,200 were convicts and prisoners (9 percent of the total).

“Convict transportation played a significant role in the workings of colonial America. In the same way that Australia has learned to acknowledge and embrace its criminal legacy, America needs to come to terms with its similar criminal past.”

A DNA test has confirmed that Eric Garner had a 16-month-old daughter with a woman he lived with for three years until his death.According to the New York Daily News, Garner, who died outside a Staten Island, N.Y., store after police administered a banned choke hold, was never legally divorced and his widow, Esaw Garner, who acknowledges that the baby, named Legacy, is his daughter, but added that the little girl will never be part of her family. “They knew she was his daughter, but they didn’t want the public to know so they could keep up the image of the happily married husband and wife together, which was the farthest thing from the truth,” Jewel Miller, Legacy’s mother, told the Daily News. “I think it was a public relations thing.” Garner had four biological children ranging in age from 15-25 with his wife, Esaw. The Daily News notes that the family is seeking up to $75 million for Garner’s death. The DNA confirmation that Legacy is in fact Garner’s daughter would entitle her to the largest portion of a payout should they receive a settlement. The Daily News notes that settlements are divided among living family by life expectancy, meaning the youngest child would receive the largest sum. Eric Garner was approached by police July 17, 2014, and harassed for reportedly selling loose cigarettes. An argument ensued and police attempted to arrest Garner. One officer, Daniel Pantaleo, can be seen on recording placing Garner in a police-department-banned choke hold.

Garner can be heard on the recording stating, before dying, “I can’t breathe.”

French Freaks A French soldier has been charged with sexually abusing both a five year old and three year old girl and recording images of a pornographic nature involving a minor at swimming pool in Burkina Faso. A second soldier was freed without charge.The two men were swiftly sent back to France, which is still reeling from another alleged child sex abuse scandal involving French troops in Central African Republic that only came to light after it was leaked to the British press.

French judicial and military authorities have launched an investigation into the latest claims, as have police in Burkina Faso.

The father of the five year old has hired a lawyer in France who specializes in child abuse cases, and says he hopes for harsh punishments for the two men “so that they never do such a thing again.”

He has also lodged a complaint in Burkina Faso against the repatriation of the soldiers.

Kenyans Warn Obama: “Leave the Gay Talk in America” Nairobi (AFP) - Kenyan anti-gay protesters marched in Nairobi Monday warning US President Barack Obama not to speak about gay rights when he visits the country of his ancestors later this month.

"We do not want Obama and Obama, we do not want Michelle and Michelle," they chanted. "We want Obama and Michelle and we want a child!"

"It is important for us as Kenyans to know that the US is not God, and thus we cannot follow them blindly," said protest organiser and evangelical Christian pastor Bishop Mark Kariuki.

Kariuki said Obama was welcome to visit "his father's home" but should not "talk about the gay issue."

Buff City Hoops came into fruition after the Gus Macker Basketball Tournament was moved to Grand Island, taking it even further away from Niagara Square than last year when it was held at Darien Lake.

The need to make sure our young people had access to competitive sports in a struc-

he Episcopal Church has elected its first Black presiding bishop and primate.

The Rt. Rev. Michael Bruce Curry, who grew up in Buffalo, and who served as bishop of the Diocese of North Carolina for the past 15 years, was overwhelmingly elected the church’s 27th presiding bishop during its 78th General Convention in Salt Lake City on June 27.

The Rt. Rev. Curry, 62, described himself as “a follower of Jesus. I’m not a perfect one, but I want to be one of his disciples,” he said at news conference following his election.

He will serve a nine-year term.

“I just look forward to serving and working for the cause of the Jesus movement in the world, to help this become a transformed world that I like to say looks more like God’s dream and less like our nightmare,” he said.

According to the Episcopal New Service, a liturgy marking the beginning of the Rt. Reav. Curry’s ministry as presiding bishop and primate will be celebrated November 1 , All Saints Day, at Washington National Cathedral.

The Rt. Rev. Curry is a 1971 graduate of HutchinsonCentral Technical High School. He is the son of the late Rev. Kenneth S. Curry, who served as rector of St. Phillip’s Episcopal Church for 17 years. He later served as Buffalo human relations commissioner and executive director of the Buffalo Human Relations Department.

The Rt. Rev. Curry was ordained into the priesthood in 1976. He was elected the 11th bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina on Feb. 11, 2000, and consecrated on June 17, 2000, in Duke Chapel on the campus of Duke University, according to the diocese website.

Doctors Said Local Teen Would Never Speak: Video Goes Viral Doctors once told Amber Simone Chinn that she would likely never speak. Her prognosis sounds different today.

The 19-year-old is a dynamic singer, now captivating users on social media. A video of Amber Simone singing Jhene Aiko has over 2 million views.

The 19-year-old was born with Left Craniosynostosis, a defect that can impact a baby’s skull development.

She had surgery at six months old, in which her parents were told it might go badly for her voice. Amber Simone successfully recovered. These days she is a college student in Buffalo, and working with local producers on her own music.

When she was at a graduation party on Grand Island, she never thought an impromptu video recording of her singing would go viral. It did.

Amber was captured poolside singing a song by Jhene Aiko.

A friend’s mom shared it on Facebook and YouTube and the rest is history “It’s hard to grasp,” Amber told 2 On Your Side’s Claudine Ewing during an interview. “I have confidence, but I never thought me sitting by the pool, a random video would be so viral.”

Despite the heavy rain, many prayers went up and the blessings came down during Saturday’s Soul Food Festival in downtown Buffalo. Monica put on an excellent performance singing her present and past hit songs such as "Why I Love You So Much"and"Before You Walk Out My Life." Eric Benet earned his medals when he took the stage and surprised the crown by hitting vocals only Prince could hold as a man! But the grand finale was when BOBBY BROWN hit the stage. n a unanimous vote, Dr. Bridgitte Griffin was appointed Head of School by the Charter School of Inquiry’s trustees. Dr. Griffin, a native of Rochester, was a teacher of the year, mentor teacher, Assistant Principal, and district administrator supporting principals and teachers. She brings with her a commitment to excellence and a demonstrated record of results in educating children.

The Charter School of Inquiry is a new Kindergarten through Grade 6 Dr. Griffin charter school in Buffalo. The school is currently recruiting children for Kindergarten, 1st grade and 2nd grade and will add a grade each year. Its mission is to achieve breakthrough outcomes for children by creating a handon and engaging learning environment.

I am excited to announce that on July 11, 2015, interviews/ screenings will be held at the Central Branch of the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library, in the West Room, for the first of a series of videos that will highlight the positive and diverse skills, talents and accomplishments of the children living in the City of Buffalo.

These include, but are not limited to the arts and academic achievements. We all have much in which to be proud. I have witnessed it firsthand. This video is the culmination of my efforts to provide an audio and visual record of the many positive accomplishments of our youth and to give them the opportunity to voice their concerns and express their feelings about those issues that are most important to them and should be to all of us. One of my primary objectives is to inspire, education and interject a measure of hope and positivity in their world that is consumed far too often, with negativity e.g. struggling schools, struggling economy, poverty and racism. This video will highlight and combine talk and talent.

None of this could be possible, without Jonathan Clarke, who saw the merit in and benefits of my proposal and graciously agreed to act as Host and Producer. Jonathan currently hosts an international web based Christian music video show called, The Grip Show”.

The Grip can be viewed on YouTube, as well as Roku Television.

ECC aims to improve service with new Student Success Center at City Campus BUFFALO— Erie Community College officials joined local political leaders, staff and students to open the college’s new City Campus Student Success Center—located inside a reconfigured wing of its 45 Oak Street building—with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, June 12, 2015.

“The name ‘Student Success Center’ is appropriate because that’s what this college is about: student success,” said ECC President Jack Quinn, who was joined by City of Buffalo Deputy Mayor Ellen Grant, New York State Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples-Stokes, and a large contingent of the college’s staff and students. “This revamped facility will certainly improve our customer service for students eager to start at ECC in future semesters.”

The new student-focused center—which will serve as a one-stop service model to eventually be replicated at ECC’s North and South campuses—was conceived to streamline and strengthen City Campus’s services by consolidating its Admissions, Financial Aid, Registration, Counseling and Career Services offices in one convenient location. Instead of having these needs spread across multiple buildings inside its downtown footprint, visitors (starting on June 15) will find friendly student advocates who will first assist them through these enrollment processes, then develop a plan essential to their eventual success at ECC, further college education and post-grad careers. It’s a rare consolidation at any college, whether in Buffalo or elsewhere.

“Students will not only leave this center knowing what they’re going to do next semester, but what they’re going to do five to 10 years down the road,” said Ben Packer, ECC’s Executive Vice President of Student Affairs. “This will be the major benefit of the center, and we’re so happy to be able to offer these refined services to our students.”

This Student Success Center is just one of the many initiatives ECC has recently undertaken to make enrolling at the college more convenient, as well as increase recruitment and retention efforts. Other initiatives include its new START orientation program; implementation of early-alert software over the next calendar year; and revamping recruitment efforts to reach both traditional and non-traditional students throughout Western New York. **

irst there was Herman, that anonymous (reportedly he later revealed his identity) Negro, who came to Carl Paladino’s defense a couple months ago. In his own inimical style Herman wrote a letter lauding Carl’s “give ‘em hell” style and in his own words, applauding Paladino for working to “fix” the Buffalo schools. While he was at it, he took the opportunity to “school” Paladino and everyone else about the innate nature of Black people. “Blacks think different, we are comfortable playing the part of being the VICTIM, and always blaming others for things we should be doing for our self…..We always make accusations of racism, when in fact Blacks are more racist than anyone……We (Blacks) don’t understand capitalism, economics or investments. We are selfish, and have intention of taking responibility (sic) for our self…. All we want is to have things given to us…..when it comes to the miniority (sic) school board members (ignorance). You are an intellegent (sic) man, but you will never come across to those idiots. This is why, we are Barbara Seals at the bottom of the food chain.”

So, it was only a matter of time before another Paladino “friend” decided that Nevergold she needed to educate the Black women of the Board about Black children and racism. On June 25th firmly ensconced on a platform built on privilege, smug superiority, insensitivity and gross ignorance, a beaming Paladino cheering her on, Tea Party member Julianne Thompson addressed the Board on the subject: “A Perspective on Race.” She began with an admonishment, supposedly to all Board members observing that “some of the conflict here lies, not in differences of skin color, but the rather radically opposing temperaments.” The latter were attributed to “…very expressive women” who talked too much “and stodgy… just the facts kind of men.” She further suggested that we remember that we were not “at a church bazaar or a ladies game of poker” and should learn and use Roberts Rules of Order. But after this lofty beginning Ms. Thompson descended into the real purpose for her presentation.

First, she disclosed how disturbed she was by the “demand for a Black superintendent”, even though no one has talked about recruiting a Black superintendent except Paladino. She proceeded to link that “demand” to what she alleged was the faulty reasoning of the Minority members and others that “No one can understand the needs of our children like a Black person can.” “Are Black children different than White children?” she asked. Ignoring a resounding YES from members of the audience, Ms. Thompson continued to espouse her “perspective on race”. She launched into her rejection of such a ridiculous claim. “Are they less capable? Not as intelligent? Does poverty affect their ability to learn?” Without missing a beat, she assured us that from “her experience, with proper structure and support, it doesn’t”. Furthermore, based on “her experience”, she was confident that (Black) children “do not have special needs based on the color of their skin….”

With this sweeping pronouncement, Ms. Thompson suggested that we should ignore decades of research linking poverty to academic achievement because in her experience there is no link.

Forget, for example, that children living in poverty are more likely to have poor attendance; to drop out of school; to have health issues that impact learning; or to experience reading delays by third grade that have a serious, cumulative impact on reading fluency in subsequent grades. Oh, right that’s not in Ms. Thompson’s experience! The study that identified a 30 million word gap between preschoolers from lower socio-economic backgrounds and their more affluent counterparts is probably not in Ms. Thompson’s sphere of experience either. Is she aware that over three-quarters of Buffalo Public School’s population are identified as living in poverty? That institutional racism impacts every aspect of life, e.g. employment, housing and yes education, of a Black, Latino, Asian, Native American or other person of color is a fact experienced by the young and old alike? Blacks and Latinos are about 31 percent of the US population, but 60 percent of the prison population. The “school to prison pipeline”, the connection between failed educational attainment and the disproportionately high incarceration of Black men is also well documented.

Yet, I’m certain that Ms. Thompson only sees this as the criminal justice system putting away lawbreakers and misfits.

Are black children different than White children? The banality of this question and Ms. Thompson’s Tea Party “Perspective on Race” culminated in what she termed was “a rather insightful comment” by Dylann Storm Roof. Roof, the self-confessed White supremacist and murderer of nine African Americans in a Charleston, South Carolina church on June 17th, is quoted by Ms. Thompson as having said that “Black people are racially aware almost from birth, but White people on average don’t think about race in their lives.” Ms. Thompson interpreted that statement as a rationale for Roof’s actions. She said, “He apparently tragically felt that needed to change, presumably in response to the violent race riots of late and the astonishing calls for violence against all Whites.” Really? That Black people’s racial awareness “needed to change”?

“Astonishing calls for violence against all Whites?” One might ask, how Roof’s insight helped color Ms. Thompson’s perspective on race?

Are Black children different than White children? Why is it that a White woman thinks she can appropriate the right to instruct Black women, all mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters

We were examining the uncomfortable exposure it brought to our own willingness to accurately assess the reality of our condition in America, and the appropriateness of our responses to such events. We want to temporarily interrupt that discussion, in order to address in a timely manner the recent incendiary comments made by real estate mogul Donald Trump on the migration of Mexican people to America.

What an uproar Trump has caused! He confirms our original premise; that we are in a season of uncomfortable exposures, one that the Honorable Elijah Muhammad Sabirah called a “Day of the Manifestation of Defects.” We absolutely cannot miss the op- Muhammad portunity to look directly into this deep, dark hole and glean its lessons.

You will recall Trump’s accusation that among other unflattering things, the migrants are rapists. This comment has set off a firestorm, causing TV stations to drop his programing, sponsors to drop his products, and a deluge of calls for him to retract the claims. But did you see the interview Trump did with CNN’s Don Lemon? He stated the documented fact that 80% of the women and girls who cross the border are being raped, and asked Lemon: “Who’s doing the raping?” Lemon’s answer: “Um hm.” Trump asked the question again.

Lemon answered again: “Um hm.”

It’s a damn good question. The logic is unassailable. An appropriate response, since we know the assaults are happening, would be to mobilize some intervention to stop that carnage.

But even Latino commentators seem more concerned about the character assassination of Mexican people as a collective than addressing the truth of what Trump is saying. So far, the response has served to prove the existence of a condition that has long been given the term “rape culture.” This term is used to describe a condition where rape is so common, so pervasive in the society that it’s accepted as normal…not a problem to be solved, but one that’s inevitable. It’s just the way things are.

Reasonable people can acknowledge the truth of sexual assault at the border without assigning some predisposition to rape to Mexicans. We’ve seen these very conditions whenever and wherever structures have broken down, and fear, insecurity and need evoke the worst of human behaviors. In the Superdome during the chaos of Hurricane Katrina, in the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti, rapes and other crimes flourished.

We’ve always known that rape is used as a weapon of war.

Recently we watched the indescribable, large-scale violations in Rwanda and Burundi and in Serbia. We see it as a matter of everyday life in the Congo, Sudan, and in India, where high profile cases have reached our news reels. Who can forget the rash of attacks on young girls, and even babies in South Africa, after our enemies first deployed the AIDS virus, then started the rumor that sex with a virgin could cure it? During the 6-week period when Japan invaded and occupied China in 1937, the orgy of sustained attacks unleashed by Japanese soldiers was so horrific that author Iris Chang titled her account of the event The Rape of Nanking. US soldiers have raped women in every theater of war, most recently treating us to sickening photo evidence of their attacks on Iraqi women. Jounalist Seymour Hersh has reported that there is videotape of them sodomizing Iraqi boys in front of their mothers. And as what goes around comes around, US soldiers are themselves being raped wholesale, right in the ranks of their own units, by their own commanders. –And – of 26,000 reported attacks, 19,000 of the victims are men.

Smith Leaves Jefferson Ave in Disrepair Dear Editor:

My concern is about why Jefferson Avenue in the Masten District Jefferson Avenue between Main and Best streets is in dire need of repaving for last 50 years is still in disrepair.

On talking to over 50 taxpayers and business persons about the condition of Jefferson Avenue they all said it's a sad day when we can't get the basic essentials such as street paving.

The University district has gotten Kensington Avenue between Eggert Road and Bailey repaved. In addition the district is getting Main Street pave between Bailey and Winspear.

The Fillmore district's Fillmore Avenue has been paved, from E. Ferry Street to Best.

It seems the former Masten District Councilmember, Demone Smith has received a golden parachute and landed in a higher paying job, but has left the District with a sorry track record – the disrepaired Jefferson Avenue prime example.

Our Mayor Brown seems indifferent to the Jefferson Ave. fiasco . Although he lives just a few doors from Jefferson.

Maybe the spirit of former Mayors, Maseillo and Jimmy Griffin will visit Mayor Brown and let him know you take care of your constituent base because that's what they did just like every mayor that's been in City Hall Roy St. Clair

DR. NEVERGOLD continued and teachers of Black children, who were once Black children themselves, on the answer to this question? Why does she think she knows more about the care and support of Black children than we do? Why is it she thinks that the comment of a murdering white supremacist is an “insightful” pearl of wisdom about Black people that is worthy of recognition? Why has her speech been published on the NYTea Party website, lauded by Paladino and distributed to thousands on his mailing list? For me the answer can be found in the reflection of all the privileged, arrogant and ignorant people who share her views.

and as late as 2012, Eric Cantor was leading the fight against the Violence Against Women Act that gave tribes the right to prosecute white men who are still trolling the reservations to attack native women with impunity. Rape on college campuses has reached a fever pitch. Within the general population, rape kits pile up in the tens of thousands without even being tested. There is a long, documented history of prison guards raping female inmates, infecting them with diseases and impregnating them, not to mention the assaults that male inmates endure. We are currently in the throes of a worldwide sex trafficking epidemic.

Who is doing the raping? Hell, who isn’t?

As a Black family, we can least afford to keep the silence.

In our recent American experience, we know the sexual horrors that our men, women, and children endured for centuries. When the importation of blacks was outlawed in 1808, plantation owners invited northern college boys to spend their summers in the south, raping black women to impregnate them and make up the shortfall. But our victimization did not begin on America’s slave plantations. Historian Chancellor Williams documents the methodical rape of African women as part of the plan to conquer ancient African lands. European invaders forcibly impregnated African women systematically, to produce a lighter population to foster division and to eventually legitimize their claim to the land of the blacks.

Today, this sordid history maintains a presence in our homes, as we perpetuate our own victimization. It has to stop. Of course Trump is wrong to indict all or most of those crossing the border as criminals, and this is a subject about our collective humanity. Now that he has raised the leviathan to the surface… the one that we’re not talking about…let’s talk about it. We can only change what we have the courage to acknowledge.

The Abolition of Slavery on WNED-TV

H

istory has taught us that change is not a random occurrence in society. Change, whether it is the downfall of dictators like Saddam Hussein, the creation of South Sudan or the replacement of a controversial high school mascot, is the result of the efforts of people, though many who help create change go unheralded. Since its inception, America has been in a constant state of change, and no change has meant more to Americans, specifically the African American people, than the abolishment of slavery. While a lot of credit for the abolishment of slavery belongs to Abraham Lincoln with the Emancipation Proclamation and later the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, many more people were involved in the process.

This month, WNED-TV will air the three-part special “American Experience: The Abolitionists,” which focuses on some of the people that made this change possible.

The first two parts aired backto-back on July 7 starting at 8 p.m. The finale will air the following week on July 14 at 8 p.m.

The series plays more like a docudrama than a documentary, offering vivid retellings of some of the key moments in the abolition movement. A large portion of the first episode is devoted to William Lloyd Garrison, founder of “The Liberator,” an abolition newspaper in the 1830s. Garrison was widely regarded as a radical, even among his fellow abolition-

ists. Comparing the ideals of Garrison to his contemporaries like Harriet Beecher Stowe, Frederick Douglass and John Brown shows how many different ideas there were about the end of slavery. As with many movements

today, there are often several different people who would like to achieve the same goal in a variety of ways.

Part two of “The Abolitionists” explores the writings and ideals of Garrison, Stowe and Douglass. Douglass, a former slave, published “The North Star,” his own abolition-focused newspaper, and “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass,” an autobiography that went on to sell 30,000 copies between 1845 and 1860. Shortly after, Stowe, a white woman, published her novel, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” The novel was so successful that Abraham

Lincoln reportedly credited Stowe for the Civil War. The second episode also introduces John Brown’s violent plans and methods to end slavery.

The third episode focuses on the war and the election of Abraham Lincoln as the 16th president of the United States. The Emancipation Proclamation passed on Jan. 1, 1863 during the Civil War, and as a result, black men could fight in the war.

The rest of the episode highlights the events leading to the end of slavery.

The history of the American slave trade is often unmentioned. Slavery and abolition are subjects that are not usually focused on in schools, unless a student elects to study them on his or her own accord. Given that this show is both educational and entertaining, it can be viewed with the whole family. Voters are going to be allowed to pick their own nominee in the September 10 primary. And essentially whoever wins the election will get the appointment.

But in the meantime, he said the Masten District will be in capable hands while his seat remains open. Council Pesident Darius G. Pridgen of the Ellicott District, along with the Council Staff will fill in to ensure that residents in Masten are represented.

“Masten has a very capable staff in the Council office. They know what to do. They’ve been trained for years,” he said confidently.

In the following open letter to Masten residents Smith thanked his constituents and reviewed the accomplishments made during his tenure. He writes: “I want to thank your for your continued support through the years. We have been able to do extraordinary things working together for the benefit of the district. We have been able to work together to Keep Masten on the move!

“The City is financially stable and our credit rating AA. Residents are involved and active; Neighborhood institutions continue to operate, activities are funded and events still occur. Almost all the schools in the district have been rehabbed; All parks have been improved; community centers upgraded; eyesores have been removed as well as significant investment in street, sidewalk and bridge repair. Martin Luther King Jr. Park has been totally rehabbed with a corridor into the park. The battle at Central Park plaza has been won resulting in millions in new development that will help to transform a much needed neighborhood. Investments in the district continue to come. The Buffalo Billion will build out Northland Ave. and the surrounding community in the Delavan Grider area and the land clearance at Kensington Heights will provide additional development opportunity.

“Key pieces of legislation include: Changing the Foreclosure Process to make it more fair to residents and eliminate foreclosure on water bills; Traffic adjudication for the City of Buffalo that allows the City to develop its own traffic violations agency to plea its own vehicle and traffic offenses resulting in anticipated millions to the City of Buffalo; Ban the Box which removes the conviction box on job applications allowing the opportunity of an interview and extended employment opportunities for the formerly incarcerated; The Responsible Tobacco Retailing act which has limited the advertising of tobacco products to children and cleaned up over advertising of tobacco in neighborhood stores and helped veterans receive benefits.
