Tribute to Max Edison

It’s with great sadness to hear about the sudden transition of Gifford Louis Edison (fondly known as Max), the late sports editor of the Houston Defender. Max was a no-nonsense individual who was about getting things done. When I first met him and his right hand man A.D. in New Orleans during Super Bowl week, that was the beginning of learning about the African American movement in the NFL. Max was the glue that not only bonded us together on a world stage but put us in position to work with one another in mutually beneficial relationships.

Max coordinated our Annual Super Bowl week networking event with our hero/legend of African American journalism, Bill Rhoden, author of 40 Million Dollar Slaves The rise, fall, and Redemption of the Black Athlete.

Max took it upon himself to coordinate the event for the past five years or more, bringing talented African American journalists together. I met a young man named Khris Gardner from the Houston Round ball Review at Phil & Derek’s, an African American Restaurant in Houston, Texas, site of the 2017 NABJ networking event. I followed up with Khris a few months later and he has been a regular on our Sunday morning radio show. Mr. Gardner has been giving us expert analysis on the NBA and College Basketball for The past two years on the Nate Brown Jr. & the Crew (FOXSPORTS 1280 AM, 8 am – 9 am).

Max also contributed to the Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. Salute to Excellence Awards presented by The Fritz Pollard Alliance Foundation. He was the emcee of the event for the past two years along with connecting corporate and everyday people together.

He set up the Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. Salute to Excellence Awards in Houston, TX, during Super Bowl week at his church home because, Max said, “I want our people who don’t have an opportunity to meet our people of this statute, to be able to do so in a relaxed atmosphere.” Max also said, ”We have been blessed to have access to high profile people while doing our job throughout the years and this happens to be a time for our people to rub elbows with people they normally would not be meeting.”

John Wooten, Co-Founder and Chairman of Fritz Pollard Alliance said, of Max Edison: “Max was an outstanding man and person, who was very committed to doing in any way possible what he could to to help and lead in the Mission of Fritz Pollard Alliance. Max’s family should be very proud of him as a faith driven, family oriented, and responsible man.” Max was on a committee each year that submitted names and resumes of African Americans that should be interviewed for front office positions in the NFL. We are talking about people like former Head Coaches Marvin Lewis, Tony Dungey, Lovie Smith, Jim Caldwell, Jerry Reese former General Manager of NY Giants and most recently Miami Dolphins Head Coach Brian Flores.

You can tell that Max Edison meant a lot to a wide variety of people for many different reasons, and I personally want to thank him for making me a better person and allowing Pat Freeman of Mix 96.5 FM and myself behind the curtain of many African American events that were about substance and moving our people forward in a positive manner.

Thank you so much Max Edison for leading by example, rolling up your sleeves and not only talking the talk but most importantly walking the walk. May you forever rest in the Eternal Fields of peace.

Christine Castro-Parker is the founder of the Sankofa Heritage Collective which promotes and sponsors cultural and heritage activities in the Buffalo community. She was a Buffalo State College graduate of the museum studies program. She cocurated the exhibit "Through These Gates" about the life and career of John Brent, Buffalo's first African American architect.

A consulting museum curator, and recipient of the 2019 Preservation Buffalo Niagara award for Community Leadership she dedicated her last few years to recovering and publicizing the life and legacy of John E. Brent, Buffalo’s first African American architect and first President of the Buffalo NAACP. In her Buffalo Preservation Niagara award it was noted that, "As a result of her dedication, a John Brent exhibit at the Burchfield Penny Art Center was enthusiastically received, a public television documentary was created and aired, a complete catalogue of Mr. Bent’s work was been created, and a travelling exhibition was created for local libraries, schools, and festivals. Thanks to Christine, Mr. Brent’s legacy is available to inspire the next generation of Buffalonians to make their mark on this city through architectural design."

Meeting Regarding Public Art The public meeting regarding Public Art which artist John Baker made reference to in his column last week will be held Thursday, July 18 at 6 p.m. at the Delavan Grider Community Center. Mr. Baker is president of the WNY-Urban Arts Collective. The organization was formed to advocate on behalf of artists of color for equity in Public Arts projects and other opportunities.

"(His words are) dangerous" : Council Member Rivera Denounces Trump's Racist Statements David A. Rivera, Niagara District Council Member, was joined by members of the Puerto Rican, Somali, and other immigrant communities in front of City Hall to detest President Trump's recent racists statements made concerning Congresswomen Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley. Council Member Rivera also urged his colleagues in State and County Government to join him in this demand for an apology.

Trump said recently that a group of four minority congresswomen feuding with Speaker Nancy Pelosi should “go back” to the countries they came from .“Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came...? ” The hateful attack was delivered on the day he had promised Council Member Rivera widespread immigration raids,.

"I am a proud Puerto Rican and I stand with Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez as a Puerto Rican elected official. Puerto Ricans are just as much a part of the backbone of this country as anyone else," stated Council Member Rivera. "We cannot stay silent as the President continues to try and divide our country. I urge my elected colleagues in State and County Government to join me in unity against racism from the President and demand he apologize to the four Congresswomen. I represent Buffaloians on the Common Council who come to our city from Somalia, Yemen, Burma, Nepal, Bhutan, and Puerto Rico, and despite the different languages we speak and different holidays we celebrate, there is no question that we are all Americans and our differences are at the core of what makes all of us American.” "(His words are) dangerous," Rivera said. "They appeal to hatred. They sow a seed of fear in people's hearts. We need to stop that right now!"

Chairwoman Baskin’s 2019 Youth Funding Request Launches with City Partnerships

Erie County Legislature Chairwoman April N. M. Baskin attended the launch of Say Yes Buffalo’s Summer Camp 2.0. Summer Camps are held each summer during the months of July and August. The half-day programs serve students from Buffalo Public Schools who are from kindergarten through sixth grade. The camp program consists of an academic component that reinforces school-year lessons plus an enrichment component that seeks to expand students’ exposure to leadership, arts, culture and other activities. Say Yes Summer Camp 2.0 serves 1,300 youth citywide.

“As a product of the Buffalo Public School District, I was honored to participate in the kickoff for this wonderful program,” said Chairwoman Baskin. “As a single mother I know the importance of engaging and improving my child's cognitive skills over summer break. Congratulations to all local partners who made CHAIRWOMANN BASKIN this year’s program a success. We are stronger together.”

As Chair of the legislature, Baskin was able to secure $10,000 for summertime reading programming and a new $15,000 cap per organization for summer youth prime time funding.

“I'm proud to have partnered with the Buffalo Public Schools, the City Of Buffalo, and The Cullen Foundation to ensure Erie County plays a vital role in funding this six week program,” noted Baskin. “Say Yes Summer Camp 2.0 helps to eliminate the impact of summer break learning loss in our youth and provides valuable opportunities for summer learning experiences.”

Will Copper Town Residents Ever Get Their Day in Court?

In May residents of the Copper Town neighborhood filed an Article 78 petition against the City of Buffalo Planning Board to undo the city’s March approval of a development plan that includes a drive-through Tim Horton’s at the corner of Michigan and William.

They’ve circulated an on-line petition for support in their efforts. They boldly declared that they too are developers. And they have insisted that it’s not about Tim Horton’s coffee. “We are fighting for the residents of a vibrant neighborhood who deserve a walkable, beautiful, safe community,” said Gail V. Wells, who, along with Geneva Johnson and Marcia Baker, filed the petition.

But their court date, scheduled for Wednesday, July 17, has been postpomed once again.

This makes the third time.

The new date has now been set for August 1 at 9 a.m. in County Court, 2nd Floor Part 15.

Will it be postponed again? Will Copper Town residents ever get their day in court?

The Origins Of Hockey

The origin of hockey, most especially ice hockey, has been debated for years with some tracing the game’s roots back to regions of Europe and also connecting it to early Native American sports. However, there are claims that Black residents of Nova Scotia invented the game in 1815.

According to historian Chris Stevenson, hockey, as it's played today, did not exist before 1815 until a group of children from four families – Courney, Williams, Munro, and Leale – played the game in an area of Nova Scotia known as the Northwest Arm during the cold winter months.

These families were said to be from the Chesapeake Bay area of the mid-Atlantic United States.

While this fact has never been confirmed, hockey experts universally state that the game most likely evolved from Native Americans, who are also credited with inventing a form of lacrosse. Notably, White players dominate both sports today, and as wealthy Whites embraced hockey, it ultimately excluded poor Black Canadians.

What is also known is that Black hockey leagues existed before the National Hockey League, which began in November 1917. The Colored Hockey League was established in Nova Scotia in 1895, and lasted until 1930. Eddie Martin of the Halifax Eureka was said to be the first player to perform the slapshot – the hardest shot in hockey – during a game in 1906.

Congresswomen respond to Trump's Bigoted Tweets: 'We will not be silenced ...!'

The four progressive congresswomen of color attacked by President Donald Trump responded on Monday afternoon at a joint news conference, saying his “blatantly racist” assault on them is nothing more than an effort to distract from his corrupt administration and inhumane policies.

The Democratic lawmakers, Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, portrayed Trump as lawless and condemned his treatment of migrants on the border and deportations.

"This is the agenda of white nationalists, whether it is happening in chat rooms or happening in national TV. And now it's reached the White House garden," Omar said of what she called Trump's "blatantly racist attack."

Ocasio-Cortez said, "I am not surprised" by the president's actions, given the actions she said he's taken against immigrants and to hurt the average American. She called Trump's comments about the four lawmakers a "distraction."

"This president operates in complete bad faith," OcasioCortez said. "He does not know how to defend his policies, so instead he attacks us personally. That’s what this is all about” She added that she and her colleagues aren't going anywhere.

We don't leave the things we love," Ocasio-Cortez said, and "we love all people in this country."

Omar called it a "pivotal moment in our country," with Trump "openly violating the oath he took" with "human rights abuses" involving the conditions in which migrants are being detained at the border. She called for his impeachment and accused him of "colluding with a foreign government" in the 2016 presidential election, a charge he's repeatedly denied.

The congresswoman said she would not respond to Trump's "ridiculous" claims earlier Monday that she supports al Qaeda.

"It's beyond time to ask Muslims to condemn terrorists," she said.

Omar also ripped Trump as a hypocrite for saying that she should leave the country if she's not happy with the government, noting his campaign was all about what terrible shape the United States was in.

"He talked about everything that was wrong in this country and how he was going to make it right," Omar said.

Pressley urged Americans to not "take the bait" from the "occupant" in the White House.

This is a disruptive distraction from the issues of care, concern and consequence to the American people" they were sent to Washington to work on, she said.

Tlaib again called for her colleagues to begin impeachment proceedings.

"Sadly, this is not the first, nor will it be the last time that we hear disgusting, bigoted language from the president. We know this is who he is," she said.

Trump started tweeting about the four again shortly after their press conference was scheduled to start.

"IF YOU ARE NOT HAPPY HERE, YOU CAN LEAVE!" he wrote in the first of three tweets, which were posted before the four took to the podium.

Earlier Monday, Trump escalated his attacks on the congresswomen, accusing them of loving terrorists, "hating" the United States and Israel and saying they should feel free to leave the country if they're not happy here.

Trump first went after the quartet over the weekend, tweeting that they should "go back" to the countries they "originally came from" — even though three of them are from the United States — and has repeatedly doubled down since. -NBC News His incessant lashing-out prompted lawmakers of both parties to condemn his remarks.-NBC NEWS

Legendary Black Newspaper, Chicago Defender Prints Last Copy CHICAGO — Decade by decade, the newspaper told the story of Black life in America. It took note of births and deaths, of graduations and weddings, of everything in between.

Through eras of angst, its reporters dug into painful, dangerous stories, relaying grim details of lynchings, of clashes over school integration and of the shootings of black men by White police officers. Among a long list of distinguished bylines: Langston Hughes and Gwendolyn Brooks.

After more than a century, The Chicago Defender has ceased its print editions.

The Defender will continue its digital operation, according to Hiram E. Jackson, chief executive of Real Times Media, which owns The Defender and other black newspapers around the country. He said the move would allow the news organization to adapt to a fast-changing, highly challenging media environment that has upended the entire newspaper industry.

“It is an economic decision,” Mr. Jackson said, “but it’s more an effort to make sure that The Defender has another 100 years.”Still, the demise of The Chicago Defender’s print editions represented a painful passage for many people who grew up in Chicago. Of its many significant effects over many years, The Defender was seen as a catalyst in the migration of hundreds of thousands of Black Americans from the South.

The nation’s black press, including The Defender, was in some ways born out of necessity, providing an outlet for Black people at a time when there was no other platform for them.

The first black newspaper, Freedom’s Journal, was created in 1827 and argued for the abolition of slavery. By some estimates, more than 500 black-owned newspapers emerged in the three decades after the end of the Civil War in 1865.

Buffalo's Duane "Duke" Sevillian: Beyond The Marathon

T

here are an estimated 60,000 people that run the July 4 Peachtree Road Race annually in Atlanta, Georgia .

There is only one Duane “Duke” Sevillian.

Born and raised in Buffalo, Duane made history this year as the only Black man to run the Peachtree marathon – the largest 10k race in the world - for 40 consecutive years! He ran his first Peachtree race at age 26.

The son of the legendary Henry “Hank” Sevillian, Duane got his athleticism and love for running, honestly.

His father was founder of the Pioneer Track Club 'back in the day.' For over four decades he coached and counseled several generations of inner city kids “for no money or headlines” ; providing caring, discipline, and a healthy alternative to the streets through his organization. The elderly Sevillian still resides in the Buffalo area.

“My sister and I (the late Debra Sevillian-Poles) were the first two members of the Pioneers Track Club,” he told the Challenger following his recent run in Atlanta before returning to his current home in Napa, California.

“We were also the first students to get Athletic scholarship to attend The Park School.”

Duane went on to graduate from Johnson C. Smith University, a Historically Black College. An attorney, he received his Juris Doctor law degree from Atlanta Law School.

-Beyond the Marathon: Leafy GreenWhen he’s not running marathons, Duane Sevillian is making impressive strides in another area – the cannabis industry.

He and his wife, Dr. Vanessa Niles Sevillian, a recognized advocate and expert in medical marijuana patient treatment, own the Leafy Green Agency in Napa.

“We consult with people who want to get in the business and

we have a medical clinic and a manufacturing company where we manufacture a cream ….for athletes and ex-athletes …designed to relieve pain and inflammation. It’s all made from cannabis…

“We have an educational company and go around the country to different states on the edge of medical and recreational (cannabis legalization) and we teach about the plant and how to get into the business – pros an cons. We stress the point that it's not a drug – it’s a plant…it’s just been deDuane Sevillian monized over the years.”

His wife does video conferences with doctors to teach them as well.

The impressive doctor/lawyer team got into the business after they decided they wanted to make a difference in the world.

“We knew that cannabis was a way for people to go natural. We just took a chance …gave up everything in Atlanta and moved to California.

Attorney Sevillian said he has been in touch with NYS Majority Leader Crystal Peoples-Stokes and is well aware of the cannabis legalization efforts in New York State. They hope to bring Leafy Green’s services to the area in the near future.

Can People of Color Get Skin Cancer?

It’s a myth that people of color, including African-Americans, Asians, Hispanics, Native Americans and Pacific Islanders, don’t get skin cancer. In fact, Jamaican singer-songwriter Bob Marley died at the age of 36 from a rare form of melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer.

While people with darker skin don’t get skin cancer as frequently as do Caucasians, when it is diagnosed in a person of color, the cancer is often more advanced, more difficult to treat, and more likely to be fatal. Three skin cancer types you need to know about are basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and melanoma.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation, from sun exposure or tanning beds, plays a major role in the development of all types of skin cancer, especially basal cell carcinoma. However, other factors are important as well and may play a particularly prominent role in pigmented skin especially in cases of squamous cell cancer and melanoma. These factors include burn scars, chronic injury, a depressed immune system (such as after organ transplant), skin lupus, albinism and non-healing leg ulcers.

Melanoma in people of color is uncommon, and 75 percent of cases appear on skin areas not typically exposed to the sun, such as the palms, soles, mouth, genitals, and under fingernails and toenails. Among African Americans, 30 percent to 40 percent of melanomas are found on the soles of the feet. Therefore it may be overlooked and thus diagnosed at a more advanced stage.

How to Protect Yourself Be sun smart. Everyone must protect his or her skin from the sun. Both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays damage the skin and cause wrinkling, premature aging, and skin cancer. While darker skin does not burn as easily, it’s the damage you can’t see right away that is particularly worrisome.

Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen (i.e., protects against both UVA and UVB rays) with an SPF of at least 30 every day. Reapply every two hours while outdoors, be sure your sunscreen is water-resistant and reapply it more frequently when you are swimming or exercising.

Check your skin regularly. Skin cancer can develop anywhere on the skin, which means you must check everywhere, from head to toe. Notice any spot that looks irregular or has changed as well as a sore that does not heal. Getting familiar with your skin will help you notice growths that change or stand out as different or suspicious. Aim to look at your skin once a month.

Here’s how to check. Raise your hands, and stand before a full-length mirror to examine your body’s front, back and sides. Use a hand mirror to check the back of your neck, scalp, back and but-tocks. Bend your elbows to examine your forearms, and check your upper arms, hands and palms. Check the front and back of your legs, feet, soles and between your toes. If any spots are different from the others, or are changing, itching, or bleeding, make an appointment to see a dermatologist. Check all your fingernails and toenails for a band of brown or black pigment, or an extension of pigment to the side or base of a nail. If you find any suspicious marks or lesions, be sure to show your health care provider.

Urban Family Practice Health Fair To Celebrate "The Spirit of the Community On Saturday, July 27 from noon to 5 p.m., Niagara Street (between Jersey Street and Pennsylvania Avenue) will be closed for the 2019 ANNUAL HEALTH FAIR, presented by Urban Family Practice.

The event celebrates “the spirit of community” and the role that Urban Family Practice has played on the commercial strip for more than 20 years. United Coalition of Churches & Brotherhood Breakfast Buffalo its that time again, where the United Coalition of Churches & Brotherhood (U.C.C.B.) will be holding it's monthly fellowship breakfast & community discussion! We will be at Temple of Christ Church located at 1230 Genesee street Saturday July 20 from 10 a.m.-12noon. Our guest speaker will be Pastor Thomas Mahaga from Seca, Kenya who is our newest church to join our UCCB family. There will be vendors with authentic handmade clothing and jewelry from Africa. Also a very important update from former employees of NFTA who were terminated due to discrimination who are now in court proceedings.

Our summer campaign has stopped two more stores from selling those KNIVES and toy GUNS to our kids, but we need more concerned community people to help plan our next moves to those stores! If we are to ever stop the violence, we must ban together! In honor of our newest UCCB member, we are asking everyone who has African clothing to please wear something representing our "Motherland." Vacation Bible School

Calvary Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, 1007 Ellicott Street, will celebrate its 99th church anniversary on Sunday July 21. Join us wearing your finest African attire.

The day will begin with a celebration Church (Sunday) School (9a.m.). Morning Worship, beginning at 10:30 a.m., will include the presentation of the “Curlie” Jackson Scholarship which will be awarded. At 4p.m. we will host guests the Rev. Loretta Lewis-Brooks & Walls Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church.

Niagara Falls Native Performs in "The Devil is A Liar"

CNN reports that the trade war between the US and China could hurt an unlikely victim: the Bible. If the two countries can't hammer out a trade deal, President Trump has vowed to put tariffs on all Chinese goods coming into America. Book publishers warn those tariffs could cause the price of printing the Bible to soar and lead to potential shortages. Most US publishers print the Bible in China to reduce costs. HarperCollins Christian Publishing, a leading Bible publisher, has asked the administration to remove Bibles and other religious publications from the tariffs list.

vonne Walker is no stranger to the stage and began acting at a very early age.

Born in Niagara Falls NY, acting started as a hobby with her first prmoduction at Zion Baptist Church on Calument Ave. That hobby turned into a passion and as the years passed not soon after her move to Ohio she landed her first role in writer director and founder of I Am Productions Sonya Blakey’s “Out of Order” in 2010 where she not only stared but also sang back ground vocals for the production.

Since then the rising actress has continued on her performance path starring in a number of Gospel stage plays, as well as making an appearance in the film The Writer’s Block not to mention performing in the musical A Color Purple.

A Conversation With Buffalo's First Lady of Jazz

Dawn Martin Berry-Walker Carries on Her Father's Legacy As The Annual Pappy Martin Legacy Masten Jazz Festival Kicks Off This Weekend In MLK Park

ames “Pappy” Martin was a legendary and much-revered jazz musician, bandleader, and community organizer who left an admired body of work when he passed in March of 2015 at the age of 82. During his musical career, “Pappy” Martin played with such greats as Aretha Franklin, Ruth Brown, Johnny Griffin, Billy Taylor, and Betty Carter. As a bandleader and musician, he played in many famous area nightclubs, including Little Harlem, Pine Grill, Dawn (left) and her dad, the late James "Pappy" Martin.

Martin’s love and passion for jazz propelled him to be a community organizer and activist.

He founded the Love Supreme School of Music that focused on instrumental music lessons, music theory and the science of music. Love Supreme School launched careers of many local and national musicians. He co-founded the Masten Jazz Festival that now bears his name as the Pappy Martin Legacy – Masten Jazz Festival.

I caught up with Dawn-Berry Walker, the President of the Pappy Martin Legacy Jazz Collective for a brief chat. Dawn is the daughter of James “Pappy” Martin. She has worked feverishly during the past three years to advance the cause of her Father’s dreams and aspirations for jazz.

This is the 24rd annual festival year for the Pappy Martin Legacy-Masten Jazz Festival.

Why do you think the festival has lasted this long?

“It is the music! We curate the festival so as to present the highest level of musicianship and focus on the authenticity of straight-ahead jazz. We enjoy embracing the community as our “jazz family” and ensuring everyone feels welcome. The community recognizes the importance of supporting and celebrating the historical, cultural and artistic value of this only original American art form.”

The festival is named after your Dad, James “Pappy” Martin who passed away in 2015. For people who may be discovering the festival for the first time, what is the “legacy” about your Dad that you would like people to know about? What do you think your Dad would say if he saw what was happening today at the festival?

“My father, Pappy, built a legacy of offering this free festival so that the best of this music, called jazz, would be accessible to everyone in the community. I believe that Pappy would be very proud that we not only respect and honor his legacy enough to continue it; but, that we are investing in building upon the foundation that he laid. Under his leadership, the festival grew, in size and scope, every year throughout the 20 years during which he was at the helm. We uphold his commitment by immortalizing his vision. He left us a great template and solid reputation for producing wonderful festivals, year after year.”

What excites you about this year’s lineup of jazz artists ?

“In addition to this year’s great lineup, The Pappy Martin Jazz Collective is proud to present Buffalo saxophonist William O. Murphy as our 2019 Honoree of The Year. Over the years he performed with many big bands and combos. A dedicated instructor at the Love Supreme School of Music, he was a respected member of the Love Supreme Jazz Ensemble. As always, we present a diverse lineup which includes the best of local and international musicians. " You’ve coined the phrase “Educate Your Ear, Listen To Jazz.” What is the meaning of this phrase you would like people to get?

“Relative to Buffalo’s past, we have somewhat limited access to live jazz. In my opinion, the best way to enjoy jazz is to experience it live. If you ‘listen’ you will internalize, marvel and develop the highest regard for the very wonderful power of the music. Our goal is to expand an appreciation of jazz by encouraging everyone to take advantage of opportunities to expand his/her knowledge through our live performances.”

You have been instrumental in keeping the legacy of your father alive and have continued to advance the dream; doing so by expanding the annual John Coltrane Birthday Celebration to 4 days, creating an annual Celestial Jazz Concert in a church setting, expanding the membership of the Pappy Martin Legacy Jazz Society, and reviving the Love Supreme School of Music. These initiatives are now housed under the umbrella of the Pappy Martin Legacy Jazz Collective. Can you give a little more information about the recently revived School of Music?

CONVERSATION WITH DAWN continued The goal of the school is to engage under-served members of the community, particularly school-age children, with instrumental lessons and experiences to expand their knowledge, understanding and appreciation of music. We hope to reinforce the pleasure associated with positive musical experiences and introduce them to often uncelebrated African-Americans who have contributed to world history, culture and art. Our general aim includes broadening their musical choices and increasing their exposure and, hopefully, interest in jazz, with

its foundation in creativity through improvisation. The initial instrument focus will include: piano/keyboard, guitar, saxophone, trumpet and drums. Our intention is to offer lessons at an affordable rate with some scholarship opportunities available for those who qualify.

The Uncrowned Queens Institute is pleased to announce the winner of the first Mary Crosby Chappelle Memorial Scholarship. Jordan Jackson, a recent graduate from St. Joseph Collegiate Institute was selected by the Institute’s Scholarship Committee.

Committee Chairperson, Linda Coppock said the committee received 15 applications and although there were many deserving students, Jordan stood out for his academic achievements and volunteer contributions.

Jordan is a graduate of the Breaking Mr. Jordan Barriers program; a mentoring program for young men of color; that teaches leadership skills and community engagement strategies. He also serves as a teen educator of Patch Hope Buffalo. PATCH (Providers and Teens Communicating for Health) is an innovative, youth-driven program working to ensure all youth can receive high-quality, youth-friendly healthcare services. He also volunteers for Jericho Road Community Health Center. He is an Alpha Kappa Boule scholarship recipient and has volunteered as a Buffalo Prep Scholar – 2013 – 2019.

Jordan was not able to attend the presentation to formally receive his scholarship on June 27th at the Frank E. Merriweather Library. His grandmother, Diane Jackson, accepted on his behalf and shared how proud his family is of him and all he’s accomplished thus far. Jordan will attend the University at Buffalo in the Fall. The Uncrowned Queens Institute knows that he will continue to serve his community as he furthers his education.

The Mary Crosby Chappelle Memorial Scholarship is named for a venerable educator, journalist, sought-after public speaker and civil rights activist. Mrs. Chappelle was a Buffalo teacher, member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the Phyllis Wheatley Club, Bethel A.M.E. Zion Church and so much more. American Physicians Association (AAPA) and Council of Heritage and Arts of India, Inc. (CHAI) are partnering to host a Community Health & Wellness Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 20 at Community Access Services, 3297 Bailey Ave. The event is free and open to the community. There will be free health screenings for participants ages 18 and up, as well as info on how to access a variety of health support services.

Providers will be on site to administer the health screenings, which include noninvasive physical and sexual health screenings, and STI testing. They can also answer questions about HIV, hepatitis C, mental health, kidney and heart disease, dental needs, substance use and more.

Participants can also enjoy free BBQ, games and giveaways. The event is familyfriendly and from 12 to 1 p.m. there will be a fire truck onsite to provide fire safety information to children and their families. Several years ago, we were privileged to have Sahil Jain, a student from Cornell University, thanks to the Partnership for the Public Good (PPG). This year we are happy to have ASIA ALEXANDER, a nineteen year-old Buffalonian who attends Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. She has developed a curriculum which can help to go a long way toward keeping our girls away from the criminal injustice system. Although her time with us will be brief, she is going to deliver 4 sessions with a plan entitled “Kathryn’s Angels”…remembering her grandmother, Kathryn.

The idea for this plan developed from Asia’s noting that a recent Prisoners Are People Too meeting attracted no young people. Our youth need to be apprised of the criminal injustice data that directly affects them. Our girls need to know that the fastest growing prison population is female….and that Black girls are three times more likely to be arrested, convicted, sentenced, and imprisoned than White girls.

Asia is an outstanding student majoring in English with a Minor in Comparative Women’s Studies. It should also be noted that she is on the Pre-Law Track. A demonstration was held at the Erie Basin Marina to bring awareness to the replica of the ship Santa Maria from Columbus voyage in commemoration of genocide, slavery and land theftwhich began with its original voyage. Sacrificing a People

B

uffalo Police officers Watch As Handcuffed Man Is Beaten.” This was the head-line in the Buffalo News on Friday February 22, 2019. It was followed by the subsequent article, “Cellblock Beating Video Stirs Outrage,” also a headlined piece in the Buffalo News on Saturday, February 23, 2019. Reading these two news pieces, I could not help from coming away disappointed.

The story goes that on May 19, 2016, Shaun P. Porter, a Black man was arrested as a result of a domestic complaint; he was taken to the police lockup by arresting officers, Joshua T. Craig and Anthony J. D'Agostino, one White and the other biracial, according to the Buffalo News. At the lockup, Porter is turned over to Matthew Jaskula, a White jailor.

During this transition of Porter from the Buffalo police officers to the city jail a video camera inside the jail comes into play. It captures Jaskula as he powerfully shelves Porter to the floor while Porter hands were cuffed from behind him making it impossible for Porter to catch his fall. While on the floor Jaskula is said to beat the defenseless Black man at will while the two arresting officers are seen on video standing off to the side having, what appears to be Ted a casual conversation while ignoring the assault taking place less than twelve KIRKLAND feet away.

But the News did more than just front page a brutal assault of a Black man published in its Friday February 22, 2019 edition. It was an unusual edition which showed a video, account of the beating that they obtained through New York’s Freedom of Information Law against the City of Buffalo, which took nearly two years to obtain, which makes this beating more than three years old because Mayor Byron Brown, is reported to have ordered his city lawyers to use every means necessary to prevent the release of the video to the public.

With the release of the video recording to the general public, the brutalization of a Black man under color of law that occurred on May 19, 2016, is described as follows: “In the video that Buffalo officials didn’t want the public to see, one of their cellblock attendants grabs a handcuffed defendant from behind and throws him to the floor. His head hits a shelf, opening a gash on his face. He’s then dragged to an empty cell and dropped into a chair as blood pools beneath him.”

The video — which a federal judge would call, "horrible to watch" — shows defendant Porter appearing compliant as the cellblock attendant books him into the city's holding facility.

It’s not clear why Matthew Jaskula attacked Porter and throws him to the floor where his head hits a shelf causing him to go limp. Jaskula then drags the 37 year old Porter, like one may drag a dead dog out of the street, by the arms to a cell, where Porter's head slams into the door frame.

Porter does not resist. Officers Joshua T Craig and Anthony J. D'Agostino are still seen standing nonchalantly talking to each other as if at a social event while ignoring their sworn duty taking place before them- a kind of 2016 urban Jail house lynching.

Jaskula, along with two other cellblock attendants, partially undresses Porter, places a spit guard over his mouth and puts him into a restraint chair. Blood drips from Porter's face to the floor. After complaining of chest pains, Porter was transported to Erie County Medical Center and treated for nasal bone fractures.

Once released from jail, Shaun filed charges in Federal court charging Jaskula, and the City of Buffalo with willfully depriving him of his constitutional rights under color of law resulting in bodily injury. As a result Juskula was sen-tenced to 18 months in federal prison, loss of job, and three years of supervised release. Officers D’Agostino and Craig each received a sentence of 30 day suspension without pay. Both returned to duty in 2016 without any criminal charges filed against them. Excuses were made by the mayor to the media as to why they were not fired and why they had not received harsher punishment considering their conduct of just watching the beating of another human being.

To answer this question may be easier than expected, that is when Police Commissioner Byron Lockwood is conspicuously absent from this conversation and the decisions made in this case. As Lockwood’s boss, Mayor Brown usurped Lockwood as the commissioner, therefore allowing the Mayor, the politician, to bring politics into the final decision in the case.

“This kind of incident does create a blemish. It is painful to watch,” Mayor Brown said during a press conference. “And if it looks like there is any criminal behavior, this police department and this administration will be pushing for termination of that individual or individuals.”

After that speech, how can one ask the mayor why haven’t D’Agostino and Craig been fired, certainly they meet the criteria. But the average person would respond, who are they? For all the average person would remember is the calming effect of the Mayor’s voice, equaled to that of an average Baptist Preacher in Buffalo.

The city lawyers are said to have forwarded to the Buffalo Common Council the law department’s recommendation to pay Shaun P. Porter $300,000 as a settlement in which the Common Council agreed to without putting forth a better plan. So without a better plan Buffalo’s taxpayers are left to pay a $300,000 settlements that occurred because two Buffalo Police officers (who may not even live in Buffalo) decided not to do their job. Instead, they watched the beating of a Black man instead of intervening and rescuing him from the sadistic male jail guard who took advantage of the prisoner because he was handcuffed from behind.

A better plan would have been to have the two officers repay the city at a rate $2000 each per month until the taxpayers are paid in full. This would be punishment that would give warning to others

In The Fruitbelt, The Struggle Continues...

Dear Editor: Before people get all misty eyed over the generous donation of a historic building that will become a food co-op, this Fruit Belt advocate needs to affirm some points Rod Watson made in his June 4, 2019, column “Donor saves Fruit Belt landmark and dream.”

Specifically, this happened “at a cost that never should have been.” So true.

238 Carlton stood vacant for two decades while this author knows of a Fruit Belt businessman who made offers to the owners previous to Borderland Advantage.

But his offer was continually turned down. Why? Speculation, and the belief a winning lottery ticket of great material wealth was held. It wasn’t.

Borderland Advantage purchased the building in April 2017, after a fire. When the building was slated for demolition, members of Fruit Belt/ McCarley Gardens, with Preservation Buffalo Niagara, met with an LLC owner late December 2017, and it was clear the owners wanted to extract every cent possible out of one of the poorest neighborhoods in the City of Good Neighbors. Although they expressed

plans for restoration and reuse, no action was taken. Later as offers were made, the LLC continually rejected them with the reasoning that vacant land was selling for $75,000 in the Fruit Belt, never giving evidence of these golden real estate transactions.

Thankfully, the Permit and Inspections Department was more than fair, patient, and gracious by stalling demolition, giving us time to find a solution, whereas the LLC was clear in their interest in city demolition to pay by installment, rather than pay a private contractor in full upfront. Prior to purchase, our donor was advised that court proceedings over the property were ongoing and the City had issued a number of Code Violations against the structure. This was a classic demolition by neglect move by the owners.

-The Cariol Horne CaseLet’s put this case side by side with the Cariol Horne case, where Horne’s action was based on her attempt to prevent a possible homicide of a man being held in a choke hold by a White police officer. Seeing the man was unable to breath, officer Horne attempted to free him. In doing this she was brought up on charges of interfering in an arrest. Her fate was also determined by Lockwood and Mayor Brown, with the two of them favoring the White officer. Was this a decision based on politics? It must be remembered that the PBA (Police Benevolent Association) was one of Brown’s largest financial supporters in his race for Mayor. The following is a statement made by Cariol Horne: "My name is Cariole Horne. I am a proud New Yorker and a mother of five, and grandmother of 13 and for nearly a decade I have been appealing a wrongful firing and the loss of my pension.

When I was fired by Buffalo PD, the department charged me with obstruction for stopping Officer Kwiatkowski’s brutal attack on an already cuffed and arrested suspect. Even Kwiatkowski himself disputes the facts of the charges that got me dismissed. And while he was allowed to be promoted and then retire with his pension.

December 1, 2016 he pled guilty to federal Charges."

But before Cariol was fired, and while pondering about her upcoming hearing, I invited Mayor Brown to breakfast. We met at GiGi’s Restaurant. With more than 20 years in the Criminal Justice system, I tried to convince him that what Cariol had done, any good cop would have done. I said that she should be reinstated and each time thereafter when I mentioned Cariol being reinstated his re-

sponse was, “No, I think we got her.”

In 2004, an Anti-Flipping Task Force (AFTF) was established under the Masiello administration to prevent questionable real property transactions. Where is it?

What is the City doing now about unscrupulous flipping and property neglect? The AFTF, plus the innovations instituted by Judge Nowak, the WNY Law Center, and vigilant citizens, allowed the Buffalo Housing Court and the AFTF, to transform problem property challenges in Buffalo. Administrations change and a decade plus later, Buffalo suffers from poor property management.

Consider the recent Kuwaiti realtor debacle AbdulAziz HouHou that resulted in blighted streets and the death of a veteran. With the amount of money that passes through Buffalo via Block Grants and the 2016 Community Reinvestment Act, surely a solution can be created, funded, and implemented that protects neighborhoods from fraudulent flipping and demolition by neglect. With preservation ready properties in the Fruit Belt such as 204 High Street with its landmark status and now under threat of demolition again, the neighborhood has demonstrated its desire to maintain the unique, historic character of the community.

So why the continual fight to preserve and protect?

Fruit Belt residents have fought daily with pained hearts for over sixty years to just exist where we call home.

We have fought encroachment of expressways and hospitals; we have fought an attempted name change; we have been demeaned and denigrated; we experience unnecessary demolitions, inconsiderate to illegal parking, slumlords, disinvestment, and neglect. In spite of the negativity, we are proud residents who contribute to Buffalo, to the nation, and to the world. And we will continue to do so. We just wish we didn’t have to struggle so. Finally, to Borderland Advantage, please enjoy your money!

Buffalo Bills

As we get closer to the mandatory Bills training camps, the fans, analysts, sportswriters, and sports show hosts all have ideas on who will make the 53 man roster. So I will take the time to make a few projected depth chart roster spots at the QB, RB, WR and O-line positions.

At the Quarterback position, Josh Allen will be the Week One starter. Matt Barkley will be the backup quarterback and Tyree Jackson will be the third stringer as he will get to watch and learn from Allen and Barkley.

The Running Back Position will be interesting to watch as rumors and ideas are swirling that a trade involving LeSean McCoy could be made. But with all that being said, I still think LeSean McCoy will be the Week One starter and he will be paired with Frank Gore as the backup and Devin Singletary will be the third string runner.

It is very important to have receivers to throw the ball to when your a rookie or second year quarterback trying to prove your worth in the NFL. The Bills understood just that after last season saw the Bills struggle on offense under Brain Daboll. The new Bills receivers include Cole Beasley, John Brown, Duke Williams, and Andre Roberts.

The projected starters will be John Brown as the #1 receiver then Robert Foster will play at the 2 and Cole Beasley will be in the slot. Duke Williams will be the 4th opinion and a potential red zone threat.

The offense last season was horrible no thanks to a terrible offensive line. The Bills immediately started off the free agency period with getting new offensive players on the line that by many where coined as the worse offensive line in football. With the new additions, the offensive line starters will be Mitch Morse, Cody Ford, Ty Nsekhe, Quinton Spain, and Dion Dawkins.

Let's not forget that Russell Westbrook also has joined the Houston Rockets in which they traded Chris Paul to Oklahoma City. I personally

think this m o v e does not make the Rockets an NBA Finals team because of the fact that they will have to change their style of play. Who is your favorite NBA duo and are the Lakers still the favorite to win the NBA Finals?

Copies may be secured from the Village or Engineer upon payment of $50.00 per set of documents which shall be in the form of two (2) checks each for one-half of the deposit. The Village of Springville is an exempt organization under the Tax law and is exempt from payment of Sales and Compensating Use Taxes on materials which are to be incorporated into the project and which are to be separately sold by the Contractor to the Owner prior to incorporation into the project, pursuant to the provisions of the Contract. These taxes are not to be included in the bid.

Proposals shall be made and received upon the following conditions: Each proposal must be accompanied by the deposit of a certified check, payable to the order of the Village of Springville, for a sum equal to five percent (5%) of the total amount of the bid, or a bond with sufficient sureties in a penal sum equal to five percent (5%) of such total bid amount, conditioned that if the proposal is accepted, the successful bidder will enter into a contract for the work, and that he will execute within fifteen (15) days from the date of the acceptance of the proposal, a suitable security bond in the amount of the contract, conditioned for the faithful and prompt performance and completion of the work specified in the contract.

All deposits except that of the successful bidder will be returned.

Upon acceptance of his bid, if the successful bidder fails to enter into a contract pursuant to the requirements of the Board, or fails to give the further security prescribed in this notice, with the item limited therein, then the check deposited as aforesaid and the moneys standing to the credit of the same, shall be forfeited to the Village as liquidated damages, or the payment of the bond enforced for the benefit of the Village. The Village of Springville reserves the right to waive informalities in or to reject any and all bids.
