ith all the TALK going on in the so-called “greater” Rochester community over the past two or three years by way of scores of so-called anti-racist initiatives, and so-called “racial justice” committees (FREE, UNITE, YWCA, METRO JUSTICE, ROCHESTER ACTS, ACTS ROCHESTER, COMMUNITY TASK FORCE ON SCHOOL CLIMATE, SOLUTIONS NOT SUSPENSIONS, DIALOGUES WITHOUT BORDERS, SPARC, etc.), I have been raising the following question for months: when will representative of all these various so-called “anti-racist” HOWARD EAGLE groups get together in one room and hammer out a decision regarding at least one concrete idea or issue that they/we agree to work on together? When we we tackle concretely, and measurably impact the most damaging and insidious aspect of the dual-headed beast and illness of individual and institutionalized racism, i.e., its INSTITUTIONALIZED form?

Thus, I am openly and publicly challenging leaders of the groups listed above, and others who are genuinely interested in doing something (other than exclusively TALKING) relative to racial justice, to work together to have a RACIST SYMBOL removed from Charlotte Beach, and placed in the back room of a museum somewhere (for educational purposes) --- maybe in the Rare Books, Documents, and Artifacts Section of the University of Rochester --- way down in the basement back in a corner).

This is a real (though minuscule), concrete, measurable, antiracist goal that we can achieve collectively. This way, when people ask: What have y’all actually done --- at least we won’t have to sit, wringing our hands; attempting to rationalize, and make things up. We’ll at least have ONE concrete accomplishment to point to.

I don’t want to be misunderstood. I am not suggesting (by any means) that this will represent anything major. IT WILL NOT, but it will represent another baby-step beyond (exclusively) TALKING. This just may be exactly the kind of activity that’s needed to help energize, and get/keep more people involved in anti-racist work.

Thus, the critical question is: Who will call for a meeting (SOON) for this sole purpose?

My thoughts are that we should begin by organizing at least, a 500 person protest and speak out at the Beach, which could represent the launch of our collective, ‘take it down campaign.’

And even while we’re in the process, we should be thinking about our next collective project. I have at least one other idea, which I’ll share at a later time.

irst, there was the Honorable Samuel L. Green who, in 1978, became the first African American outside of New York City to be elected to State Supreme Court. He retired in 2011 after 28 years on the bench, making him the longest serving justice in the Appellate Division Fourth Department.

It took an additional 15 years for the Democrat and Republican parties to nominate and elect the first woman of color, the Honorable Rose Sconiers, who is expected to retire at the end of this year.

The Hon. E. Jeannette Ogden, another African American woman, was cross endorsed in the last election and took the oath of office in January of this year to serve on the State Supreme Court.

But to date, Justice Green has been the only Black man to serve on that bench in the Court System’s 194 year history.

-Concerned Clergy On The CaseThe Concerned Clergy Coalition of Western New York is seeking to change all that.

The Coalition, which met a few weeks ago with Erie County Democratic Committee Chair Jeremy Zellner, stood by their earlier demand that the Democratic organization make a commitment that a person of color – specifically an African American male - be cross nominated to replace Justice Sconiers in the November election for the State Supreme Court.

According to sources, the Clergy Coalition was joined by representatives from the BUILD Organization, the NAACP, The Black Leadership Forum and the Baptist Ministers Conference of WNY. The meeting was a follow up to May 4 and June 14 letters to Chairman Zellner requesting the face-to-face conversation signed by Pastor Kinzer M. K. Poiner on behalf of the WNY Clergy group. “ Since the retirement of Justice Green there has been a consistent denial of representation on the Supreme Court bench with regard to the community that would elevate persons of color. At the same time both parties have shamelessly sought votes in our community for ‘their candidates’ (while) African Americans and Latinos have been intentionally left out,” the letter read in part.

“The one question that MUST be answered by party leadership in Erie and Niagara Counties, as well as the remainder of the Eighth Judicial District, is: will the Democratic and Republican parties once again turn their backs on our communities (and) shut us out…? “..In 2015 we stand united and say, ‘not this time!’ As voters we are aware of the significant positions that will be on this November’s ballot, including that of Erie County Executive.

“As a united community we will not be silent and well behaved, allowing ‘other’ candidates to walk through our community to seek our votes unless there is an UP-FRONT commitment that a person of color will be cross nominated to replace Justice Sconiers. “ In a year where, on too many occasions, people have questioned the systemic fairness of the Judicial system we stand UNITED and declare : ‘We will decide whom we will support and whom we will advise those in our community to support! Whether any of ‘yours’ are included will depend on the position that you take at this most important moment on this vital issue.”

The determination as to who will be nominated to run for the Supreme Court position will be made at the Democratic and Republican Judicial Conventions in September.

Leading up to and including the September Convention, the community will not only be watching to see what the major political parties will do– especially the Democratic Party - but where Black elected officials stand as well.

-The McLeod FactorEarlier this year Buffalo City Court/Acting Erie County Court Judge James A.W. McLeod, who’s early career interestingly enough includes having served as Confidential Law Clerk to Supreme Court Justice Green, announced that he was seeking the nomination for one of two Supreme Court positions that will appear on the ballot this November.

More than qualified, Judge McLeod, first elected to City Court in 1998, has disposed of over approximately 50,000 criminal and civil matters. Active in the community, he has been touted as committed to fairness, but tough on criminal issues.

In seeking the cross nomination, and, if elected to what he referred to as “the highest trial court,” Judge McLeod stated: “My goal would be to insure Judge McLeod equal treatment for all, and to create an atmosphere where those who appear will know that he/she is receiving justice.”

The African-Chinese Connection Part II Early Chinese Dynasties Had Negroid Features The physical characteristics displayed by earlier groups of Chinese people corresponded with fea- Emperor Pu-yi tures that some researchers call “distinctly Negroid.” Renowned author and professor Chang Hsing-Lang noted this in “The Importation of Negro Slaves to China Under the Tang Dynasty,” where he writes that “even the sacred Manchu dynasty shows the Negro strain.

The lower part of the face of the Emperor Pu-yi of Manchukuo, direct descendant of the Manchu rulers of China, is most distinctly Negroid.”

Early Works of Art in the Image of Black People It seems highly unlikely that any group of people would present a collection of statues and other works made in the likeness of a people they have never encountered before. That’s why the early presence of so many clearly African figures is so intriguing. According to famed historian Runoko Rashidi, “From the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE) some statues of Africoidlooking dancers … They have spiral hair and seem to twirl around with one arm in the air topped by clenched fist.” It is believed that these figures are the depictions of the “Black dwarfs” that early Chinese settlers often described seeing.

Black People Built the Earliest Kingdom in Southeast Asia “Funan is the name given by Chinese historians to the earliest kingdom of Southeast Asia,” Rashidi explains. “Its builders were a Black people known as Khmers, a name that loudly recalls ancient Kmt (Egypt).” Much like Continued Page 5

Eric Garner’s Family Accepts $5.9 Million to Settle Wrongful Death Case The family of the Staten Island dad, who died during an arrest in 2014, had previously announced plans to sue New York City for $75 million.

Disturbing new images from the film show men and women in traditional Klan robes chanting around a fiery cross blazing in the night. Children as young as 12 - not yet sworn in to the notorious white supremacy group - watch from their tents as the flames rise 30 feet and envelope the wooden cross.

Director Dan Vernon spent seven months with the men and women inside the modern-day organization. The documentary - which was broadcast on Britain's Channel 4 - comes just one month after the Charleston church massacre, where nine Black people were gunned down by suspected White supremacist Dylan Roof.

America is currently in the grip of racial turmoil - fueled by the Ferguson and Baltimore riots in August last year and April this year respectively. They were sparked by the deaths of young black men at the hands of police officers.

Vernon spent time with the Traditionalist American Knights, who claim to be the fastest-growing Klan group in America.

They are also the main Klan group operating near Ferguson.

Three of their members - one a prison officer - were arrested on April 2 and charged with conspiring to murder a black former inmate.

But unsettling scenes show how neither the Klan's notorious past - nor the present conspiracy to murder charges - are enough to stop an eager 20-year-old woman from joining the group just a month after the arrests.

After being 'naturalized' in a highly secretive recruitment ceremony, she said, “'I'm still in school and that I feel should be a priority, but I do plan on helping whenever and wherever I can. I've always agreed with the morals and the values that the Klan associates with ever since I was growing up. I didn't see a reason not to join.”

During filming of Inside The Ku Klux Klan, the crew witnessed a cross-lighting ceremony on farmland just outside St. Louis, where the Ferguson riots took place.

Vernon also filmed Klan leader Frank Ancona promoting the use of 'lethal force' on Ferguson protesters to defend themselves.

The British director said: “What we uncovered was truly shocking. Anyone who thinks that the Klan is a remnant of a bygone America will be disturbed to learn their numbers are growing.

“It is very unsettling to imagine that while America is taking steps to heal the injustices of its past, there are groups out there whose beliefs are likely to further inflame racial divisions, to their own gain.” The Daily Mail

The city of New York settled with the family of Eric Garner on Monday for $5.9 million, according to family attorney Jonathan Moore, the New York Times reports. The city had until Friday to settle the case before the family filed a lawsuit. Other investigations into the case—by the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, the city’s Civilian Complaint Review Board and state health officials—will continue.

It was initially reported by the New York Daily News that Eric Garner’s widow, Esaw Garner, rejected a $5 million offer from the city of New York to settle a wrongful death claim.

A source familiar with negotiations reportedly told the newspaper that the family’s lawyer, Jonathan Moore, has been encouraging the Garner family to accept the $5 million from the city and then seek more damages in a lawsuit against EMTs who were seen on video allegedly failing to give the 43-yearold Staten Island, N.Y., dad medical treatment.

According to the Daily News, the $5 million would have been one of the largest wrongful death settlements in a death involving the New York City Police Department.

Last week Esaw Garner expressed her unhappiness with the U.S. justice system and the seeming lack of accountability, referring to the recent proliferation of officer-involved killings of unarmed black men nationwide.

“It seems like because they didn’t prosecute the officers on Staten Island, all the other officers were like, ‘Hell. We’ll get away with it. Let’s just do it again,’” she told the Daily News.

CAMILLE STANDS BY HER MAN...

In the wake of the release last week of Bill Cosby’s deposition that seemingly sealed the fate of his already tarnished legacy, his wife, who is also his business manager, called a crisis meeting with top advisers last week in an effort to “get back out in front of” the story, sources tell the New York Post.

Camille Cosby, 71, issued a stern directive to advisers to corral lawyers and public relations specialists to help restore her embattled 78-year-old husband’s once-saintly image.

“I created him, I knew what I was getting, and we’ll fix this,” she allegedly told the gathering at a meeting at the couple’s Shelburne Falls, Mass., home Tuesday night, writes the Post. “They are making him out to be such a bad guy, a monster.”

During a 2005 deposition released last week, Cosby admitted that he purchased Quaaludes to give young women with whom he wanted to have sex. The news came after years of allegations that he drugged women before sleeping with them without their consent.

Calling her “a proud but stubborn woman,” two insiders told the Post that Camille believes her husband’s accusers consented to drugs and sex.

“Camille still doesn’t believe that Bill provided drugs and had sex with women without their consent,” a source employed by the Cosby family told the Post. “She’s well aware of his cheating, but she doesn’t believe that her husband is a rapist.”

One reason Rachel Dolezal’s parents may have outed her as the White woman she is—since she’s been successfully masquerading as a black woman for years—is the role she may have played in her older brother’s standing trial in the sexual assault of a young bBack child, the Washington Post reports. Joshua Dolezal is Rachel Dolezal’s only biological sibling—the rest are adopted.

Early Conquerors’ Own Description of China’s Early Inhabitants The Shang Dynasty (17661027 B.C.) marked China’s very first dynasty and, according to the descriptions provided by the conquered Zhou, the Shang Dynasty has Black roots. Historian Rashidi explained that the Zhou described the Shang Dynasty as being a people of “Black and oily skin.”

‘Eid-ul-Fitr prayers and celebrations are planned to take place in Front Park beginning at 8 a.m. on Friday July 17 and in the event it rains heavily in the morning, then all the believers are recommended to stay and pray at local masjids. Due to our lunar calendar year the EID at the Park could fall either of the dates (07/17 OR 07/18. It falls on Saturday, then sthe Eid will be at Martin Luther King (MLK) Park at 8:00am.

The word ‘Eid means “recurring happiness” and Fitr means “to cut off.”

During the festival, Muslims celebrate the end of fasting by gathering with friends and families, preparing sweet delicacies, wearing new clothes, giving each other gifts and putting up lights and other decorations in their homes, and many will also give special common greeting during this Eid holiday is the Arabic greeting “Eid Mubarak” (“Have a blessed Eid”).

Eid in the Park will feature amausement rides, outdoor games, lectures and competitions.

axophonist Wayne Escoffery and vibraphonist Warren Wolf , in a classic tribute to jazz greats John Coltrane and Milt Jackson, will headline the opening of the 20th “Pappy Martin” Masten District Jazz Festival this Sunday, July 19, in Martin Luther King Jr. Park next to the Museum of Science from 3 to 8 p.m.

Also performing will be such outstanding talent as Terrance Bruce, Nikki Hicks, the Love Supreme Trio and Paradigm Shift.

The excitement continues the following Sunday, July 26 -same place, same time - with headliners Bobby Watson and the Curtis Lundy Group.

Rounding out the stellar lineup is Larry Salter’s Big Band, the Junie Booth Trio and The Pleasant Quintet.

This year’s festival is dedicated to the memory of the late, great James “Pappy” Martin, one of the event’s founders - who worked tirelessly to keep the festival going, and to promote Black Classical Music (jazz) in the City of Buffalo.

he Rize & Fall of Tephlon Ent.” is the first ever Buffalo Hip-Hop movie, directed and produced by Emmanuel Kulu Jr. of Black Art Visions in collaboration with Joseph Wilson of Speedy Enterprise Pro, and Tywan Abrams of Aura Films.

This film is based on a true untold story of Kulu and Tephlon Entertainment. The film displays the struggle of building a local record label without a major record deal.

Kulu is an inspired Hip-hop Artist/Producer/CEO well known in the Upstate WNY Region.

“Hip-hop has been in my heart for my whole life, I’ve been a artist for 17 years since high school. My brothers Stephen and Karl Kulu along with my cousin Rock Brown were major influences in my life in crafting my skills. My long time friend Shacorey Carter was also instrumental in my music career being apart of the rap group ‘C.O.V and the Villains’ prior to the formation of Tephlon” said Kulu.

In a segregated city like Buffalo, Hip-hop has been given a bad name and as well as all those who love the music.

Kulu wanted to change that by showing unity and telling the story of the street based off his childhood and those around him.

“Born and raised in on the Eastside of Buffalo in the Langfield Projects, we had to fight and hustle for respect, nothing was given to us. We

watched our parents struggle to make ends meet, and this created a fire in us that burns for more. Hiphop gave me an outlet to release my frustration, anger and rage through my voice. Music was my refuge, my first love and comfort zone. Music is everything, life, love, ups and downs, partying but also time travel. Music can take a person to a time in their life where they had lots of fun, hard times, struggles, triumphs, inspirational moments in life etc. Hip-hop is often looked at as a derogatory and degrading form of music, due to the freedom to express one’s self with freedom of speech (curse words and harsh language) which is an expression of oppression to African Americans. Hip-hop (like Jazz and the Blues) is one of the musical genres that Blacks in America can take full credit for, it belongs to us” said Kulu.

This film shows the strength in unity, passion, tragedy, and love for hiphop. Many people think they can just wake up and become a famous rapper, it takes sacrifice and a lot of networking, talent alone means nothing.” Kulu said.

BUFFALO STEP OPENS REGISTRATION FOR SUMMER STEAM CAMP 2015 PARTICIPANTS! Ready for its second year, Buffalo STEP has opened registration for summer STEAM camp 2015 participants!

The science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics fields are at the root of the world’s growth industries and emerging markets. They are a part of our everyday life and present a wealth of opportunity for exploration and education.

“According to the U. S. Department of Commerce, STEM occupations are growing at 17%, while others are growing at 9.8%.” Preparedness for these fields should start at an early age and be encouraged by parents and community stakeholders to facilitate STEAM based education to give our children every advantage possible to capture the opportunities that the world offers.

Staying true to its goal of promoting STEAM based education, more specifically computer science and access to technology, the 2015 effort is based in the desire to promote economic empowerment through STEAM based education and lifetime learning. This year, the camp will be held at the Delavan Grider Community Center located at 877 E. Delavan Ave, Buffalo, NY. The camp will focus on introducing participants to computer programming, web programming, 3D modeling, and animation in an interactive and hands on environment. Buffalo STEP completed a successful program last summer. Children from the area between the ages of 10 and 14 were awarded certificates for having completed the program and produced final projects.

$2,000 in Scholarships Awarded to June Graduates Black Achievers, Inc., along with Uniland Development Company and Belmont Management Co., Inc., recently awarded $2,000.00 in scholarships to five 2015 graduates during graduation ceremonies on June 26, 2015. Herbert L. Bellamy, CEO of Black Achievers, Inc., presented scholarships to Diane E. Lynch, Dejalana Jolle Gilbert and Malik Ameer Munn during the Bennett High School graduation. Denise Clark, Principal of Riverside Institute of Technology, presented scholarships to Riverside graduates Sabina Mashimango and Christian Ndagano during their commencement ceremony.

Dr. Catherine Collins, a member of the State Board of Regents, is the Chairperson of the Erma D. Robinson Educational Incentive Award fund, which annually provides scholarships to graduating seniors from area high schools.

The scholarship fund is one of the projects financed by Black Achievers, Inc. with proceeds from the annual Black Achievers Awards Banquet. This year the organization welcomed Uniland Development Company and Belmont Management Co., Inc. as co-sponsors of the scholarships awarded to the graduates.

Black Achievers, Inc. will be hosting the 43rd Annual Black Achievers Awards Banquet. The primary purpose for the awards event is to honor outstanding individuals and show the community the variety and quality of achievements of African Americans in Western New York. Images are powerful in our society, and this event highlights inspiring stories of personal, professional and community achievements. Over the past 42 years, Black Achievers, Inc. has honored more than 2,500 outstanding individuals.

This year the Black Achievers Awards Banquet will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at the Adam’s Mark Buffalo, 120 Church Street. A reception will be held at 6:00 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:00 p.m.

“The Math Doctor” To Visit Buffalo Columnist Eva M. Doyle has invited Brother Shahid Muhammad to Buffalo. Known as the "Math Doctor" because of his expertise in teaching math to African American students., Shahid will l speak at the Merriweather library on Saturday, September 19, from 1 to 6: p.m. On Sunday, September 20 he will speak at Mosque 23 where meetings are held at the C.R.U.C.I.A.L. Community Center.

Brother Shahid Muhammad is known as the "Math Doctor" because of his expertise in teaching math to Black students. He is the author of a book called " How to Teach Math to Black Students." He presents mathematics from an African centered perspective telling students about the great mathematicians in our history.

Shahid believes strongly that teachers can integrate the contributions made by Blacks to science, technology, and mathematics into their lesson plans and activities.

Mrs. Doyle would like encourage parents and guardians to bring their youth to hear Brother Shahid. Educators are also invited to attend.

Two fundraisers are planned to help defray the costs of bringing Shahid Muhammad to Buffalo. More information about the fundraisers will be announced in the near future.

Board Minority Rejects Resolution by Paladino to Appoint Superintendent Once again Carl Paladino is trying to impose the appointment of a principal as the Superintendent of the Buffalo School System. In a resolution dated June 29th but submitted to the Board on July 2nd, Paladino calls for the appointment of Kevin Eberle, effective July 15th for a “minimum” of four years. I won’t comment on Mr. Eberle at this point, Barbara Seals but the resolution was made public by Paladino and names him in the document, so I Nevergold am not disclosing confidential information.

The concern of the Minority Bloc is that this Resolution is another attempt to circumvent a process that: •Includes all Board members in the decision making process •Results in the appointment of a qualified applicant following a comprehensive and diligent search •Is open and transparent, engaging community stakeholders and offering them an opportunity for input before the selection is made •Provides a rationale for the appointment of a Superintendent that fully discloses and enumerates all the qualifications, competencies, relevant experiences and record of successful accomplishments of the proposed appointee •Provides an example of the vision/plan that the appointee brings to this very complex job specifically with respect to several recent State mandates Before getting to the crux of his resolution Paladino speaks to what he characterizes as the “dysfunction, chaos, lack of morale, corruption and incompetence of the BPS.” He also launches into invectives and accusations that “certain members of the Board” frustrated the search process and therefore other Board members were no longer obligated to continue the search process. The final paragraphs of the resolution state: Whereas, the present shortlist of seven candidates includes people not familiar with New York State, Buffalo or the BPS, its qualities, problems nor staff as well as local candidates not prepared to implement the vision statement of the BOE majority and change required to correct the dysfunction; and Whereas, only one candidate has the background and qualities necessary to immediately implement the necessary change required to correct the dysfunction in an expeditious, intelligent, informed and diligent manner to give the children of the BPS hope and an immediate opportunity for a good education Now, therefore, be it resolved that the BOE appoints Kevin Eberle as Permanent Superintendent of the BPS effective as of July 15 2015, for a minimum four year term, subject to other material terms to be negotiated by the Finance Chair and General Counsel of the BOE. It should also be noted that Mr. Eberle and two other internal candidates were interviewed by Board members on June 30th in a meeting that Mr. Paladino did not attend. So it is obvious that he made a decision that was not informed by an interview process that included several other candidates. In fact, a clause in the Resolution dismissed all other candidates, who Paladino disqualified because none were “prepared to implement the vision statement of the BOE majority.” On this point, it appears obvious that Mr. Eberle would have had to pledge his intention to implement the vision under the watchful eye of Mr. Paladino Continued Page 14

Silent Leader-The Biography of Dr. Freddie L. Thomas by Rodney Brown

R

ecently in Rochester, a book signing was held in honor of Dr. Freddie L Thomas at the school named in his honor, Dr. Freddie Thomas Elementary School. Silent Leader

by Rodney Brown is a long awaited biography of one of the nation’s most outstanding African Americans. Since Thomas’ transition in 1974 there have been few occasions to honor his legacy. One exception was Buffalo’s African Consciousness Workshop, which hosted a presentation by Waddell X, author of Expressions of Wisdom from Freddie X Thomas (1995).

Brother Freddie was a world renowned scholar and public intellectual. He was unique in his ability to relate to people of all walks of life. His house was a seamless combination of a school, library and hospitality. When not teaching in his living room he would walk the streets at night, even outside bars and restaurants, engaging folks to expand their minds and study.

Brother Freddie, who was also referred to as Freddie X for his discipleship in the Nation of Islam, mastered several fields: African history (especially Egyptian history), religious history, music (he played the piano and composed music), anthropology, mathematics, biology and chemistry. He was fond of teaching Egyptian history and the origin of the alphabet. He introduced students to classic texts of African history, including George James’ Stolen Legacy, Alexander Winchell’s PreAdmamites, Gerald Massey’s Egypt Light of the World, Godfrey Higgens, Anacalypsis, and so many others, long before it became popular. He corresponded with some of the most important historians of the time, including Arthur Schomburg, Leo Hansberry, J. A. Rogers and Yosef ben-Jochannan. Inspired by Elijah Muhammad’s historiography, he wrote a series of articles on the Asiatic Blackman in Buffalo’s Empire Star newspaper in 1958.

Although he was mainly self taught, he attended Wagner College, Albany Medical School and the University of Rochester. He invented a device for Eastman Kodak in the 1950s. His scientific research was in the areas of cell biology, tissue culture and photographic science. Freddie had an usual ability to teach math to grade school, college students or anyone who wanted to learn. He combined these lectures with history and African philosophy.

Rodney Brown’s book has rekindled an interest in the legacy of Dr. Freddie L. Thomas. Freddie, who lived in the tradition of a modern Imhotep or Chiekh Anta Diop, is worth commemorating. The first scholar to recognize this connection was James G. Spady, author of Cheikh Anat Diop and Freddie Thomas: Two Philosophical Perspectives on Pristine Black History (Journal of African Civilization (1979).

The book also uncovers the special relationship Thomas had with his wife, Margaret Banks-Thomas. The book narrates how they met and married, including the song he wrote and played at the wedding. A self taught pianist, he copyrighted more than seventy musical compositions by age 40. In this way, the book is undergirded by a love story between two people committed to each other and the community. Margaret or Midge as she is affectionately known, has struggled to keep Freddie’s legacy alive by the development of the Freddie Thomas Fund for high school seniors and archiving essential documents. Rodney Brown’s biography of Freddie L. Thomas serves to rekindle the memory of one of the most important scholars and public intellectuals of the twentieth century.

Dear Editor: The U.S. and five other countries just announced a historic deal that would limit Iran’s nuclear program, while easing international sanctions on Iran. The diplomatic agreement would prevent the conflict from escalating and avert another war in the Middle East.

Republicans in Congress want to derail the deal and put us back on the path to military confrontation. Their answer – as always – is more boots on the ground.

President Obama has said he’ll veto any legislation that would endanger the diplomatic agreement. But Republicans are trying to put together a veto proof majority – with the help of a few Democrats. Tell the Democrats: Don’t help Republicans sabotage the Iran agreement!

We can’t let them start another war. That’s why we need to urge every Democrat in the U.S. Capitol to stand up right now and back a diplomatic solution.

We’ve seen from our decades-long wars in the Middle East that Republicans don’t want diplomacy to work.

But now, just like 12 years ago when we invaded Iraq, some Democrats have shown a willingness to sabotage diplomacy.

We can’t let that happen again. We need Democrats on record to stand with the President and against a needless war.

You Are Your Best Marketer – Tips for Landing that Dream Job To develop professionally, individuals must promote themselves. Resumes are generally the first point of entry into an organization or company. For this reason, a considerable amount of detail and care should be taken.

One of the biggest mistakes individuals make is either including too much information or being too vague. It is not necessary, or advisable, to include every responsibility or task every completed in a position. Rather, resumes should include highlights, accomplishments and knowledge areas. On the other hand, general statements and summaries will not suffice. Be specific: include names, numbers, and details. There is a limited amount of space to capture skills and promote oneself; be wise and strategic.

Do your research Depending on the industry or position, resumes can be constructed in different formats. It is also important to constantly update a resume regardless of whether or not an individual is job searching. Regularly updating your resume will save the time and effort of remembering what tasks and projects were done in the past. It can also serve as a tool to evaluate individual progress and professional goals. It may be obvious, but proofread, proofread, and proofread. Another common mistake is having different fonts and spacing throughout the document. For clarity and organization, these elements should be consistent.

Errors on resumes are a huge red flag and can suggest lack of interest or care.

The Minority members of the Board of Education reject the Paladino resolution. We question its legitimacy and reject the assumed authority of one Board member to make a unilateral decision to appoint a Superintendent, even if the resolution has the support of 5 votes. In fact the Board’s Special Counsel, Karl Kristoff of the Hodgson Russ law firm responded to an inquiry from the minority members that Mr. Paladino’s resolution was not in order.

Note: Mr. Paladino did not attend the July 8th Board meeting.

After an attempt to table his resolution by Mr. Quinn was defeated, Ms. Belton Cottman moved and Dr. Nevergold seconded that this resolution be removed from the agenda all together.

This motion passed with yes votes from Ms. Kapsiak, Dr. Harris-Tigg, Ms. Pierce, Mr. Quinn, Dr. Nevergold and Ms. BeltonCottman. Mr. McCarthy was the only no vote. Mr. Sampson left the meeting early. Of course it remains to be seen if Mr. Paladino attempts to resubmit the resolution.

“After attending the workshop, I edited my resume and had it reviewed by David,” explained Frida. “I truly believe the skills I learned in the workshop and edits to my resume helped me to obtain an interview with Roswell Park. Before the interview, David invited me to come in for a mock interview to prepare for it. It proved to be very helpful because I was offered the position at Roswell Park thanks to the help I received!”

Bertina Ferguson, an Information Technology Service Desk Analyst at Roswell Park, attended a WNY Diversity Job Fair hosted by the Buffalo Employment and Training Center where she met a representative from Roswell Park and expressed her desire to work for the Institute.

“I explained that I applied for several IT positions in the past without any luck. The Roswell Park representative suggested that I have my resume reviewed or attend one of the resume writing workshops that Roswell Park offers,” she said. “I utilized their services and then applied for the IT Help Desk position. I am proud to say I obtained an interview and got the job!”

Support Our Youth! Support BUFF CITY HOOPS!

Organizers & supporters of community-based summer basketball tournament save the day for city youth!

T

he Gus Macker basketball tournament has been an important “summer-in-Buffalo” tradition for over 25 years. Unfortunately, over the past two summers the tournament has relocated outside the city, leaving our youth without a grand basketball event.

BUFF CITY HOOPS was established to fill the void that the Gus Macker games left behind.

The organization’s mission is to provide structural and organized basketball as a recreational outlet for our youth in the City of Buffalo in a safe, competitive, and good natured atmosphere. The aim is to promote education and violence prevention, while developing positive life skills for the advancement of our collective community, one neighborhood at a time.

The grand finale Buff City Tournament date will be August 29, from 12 noon to 8 p.m. Organizers are currently finalizing the location.

Under the BUFF CITY HOOPS THE FUTURE: Member of the Buffalo Rams team (L-R): Ahmir, Riumbrella there are leagues currently cardo, Javani, Tyler, Jaden and Greg. Support our youth! playing throughout the City of Buffalo (see schedule this page). Each league will cultivate and develop their teams. There will be additional cross league games scheduled by the individual league coaches. After the end of the tournament, each league will enter the top two teams of each division to compete in the BUFF CITY HOOPS Finale Tournament on August 29. At the end of the event one team per division will be crowned that the 2015’s BUFF CITY HOOPS Champion!

The BUFF CITY HOOPS Committee believes that our community is in need of consistent safe summer initiatives, so in addition to basketball sportsmanship there will also be a one 30 minute Violence Prevention Educational Workshop presented by Rev. Dr. Frederick A. Gelsey Sr. at each tournament site throughout the city. Dr. Gelsey is the founder and director of The Homicide Education & Prevention Project.
