Six Shot, Two dead in Rochester Shooting

“We have a real problem on our hands”

T

wo people were killed and four others were injured early Saturday when gunfire erupted at a house party in Rochester, N.Y., police said.

The shooting, which left at least one of the wounded guests fighting for his life, is the second major one to rock the upstate New York city in three weeks.

“Rochester has suffered enough with these shootings,” Rochester City Councilman Adam McFadden told the Democrat & Chronicle, saying he’s “hurting for my city.”

“We just seem to not be able to move past violence and guns,” he said.

At least one man was found dead at the Woodward St. house party about 4:30 a.m. Four of the victims were taken to hospitals, one with critical injuries. The rest of the victims had nonlife-threatening wounds.

Police are still investigating.

In August, seven people were gunned down three were killed and four others injured during a “mass shooting” outside a Boys and Girls Club in Rochester, officials said.

“We have a real problem on our hands when you’re a young person in your 20’s and the leading cause of death is homicide,” McFadden said. “People should be worried about that.”

Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren has pledged to continue working on the problem until the community is safer, but many have said the violence won’t stop until there’s a shift in the culture of the community. For 29th District Monroe County Legislator Ernest Flagler-Mitchell,it’s personal. One of the two shooting victims who died was his cousin.

Nonprofit’s Impact On Community Building To Be Discussed At Daemen Lecture The nonprofit organization’s role in economic development and community building will be discussed by Rahwa Ghirmatzion, director of programs at People United for Sustainable Housing (PUSH Buffalo), at the opening event in Rahwa Ghirmatzion the 201516 Daemen College Nancy Haberman Gacioch Entrepreneurship Lecture Series.

The award honors the achievements of Boswell and WNED-TV in raising awareness and appreciation of Olmsted who, as America’s first and foremost landscape architect, designed landmark urban parks all across the country.

Buffalo’s Olmsted Park System was his first vision for a complete collection of parks whose connecting parkways and circles would make this “a city within a park.”

he Buffalo Local Action Committee held a press conference on Saturday at WUFO Radio to announce a Town Hall Meeting in the wake of the recent spike in homicides. The press conference was also designed to dispel the perception that nobody cares and nothing is being done to deal with Black-on-Black violence in our community. Front line warriors, described as “unsung sheroes and heroes” who risk their lives to “do the work that does not grab headlines,” were acknowledged and it was announced that a plan of action is being formulated. Anticipation is building as local organizers prepare to add Buffalo’s plan to the national agenda at the “Justice or Else” 20th Anniversary of the Million Man March in Washington, D.C. on October 10. ith the city gripped by a spike in heart wrenching violence, the timing couldn’t have been better for a town hall meeting focused on solutions. It was an overflow crowd that packed the Merriweather Library with standing room only on Monday, September 14th, to explore those solutions, and to solidify a plan for implementing them. The collaborative spirit prevailed, despite this event happening on the heels of a local election, where plenty of folks took opposing sides in support of their chosen candidates. But, fresh off the campaign trail, rivals for the Masten District Council seat, Ulysees Wingo and Lamone Gibson were in attendance, proving that healing the family took preSabirah cedence over politics. Wingo, newly elected, pledged that his office will be Muhammad available to support the group’s agenda.

According to one of the organizers of the Town Hall Meeting, Millions More Movement Co-chair Samuel Radford, the local coalition is a mirror of the broader effort of the Honorable Louis Farrakhan to unite suffering, but fractured communities nation wide. “That’s exactly what happened tonight,” he said. “Organizations that are doing work separately, came together, on the same page, committing to work together to go forward.

Another organizer, Student Minister Dahveed Muhammad of Muhammad Mosque #23, described the town hall meeting as a great success. “All of the front line organizations that have historically served were in attendance to plan and give feedback.

Most important, though, is follow up and concrete results.” Mr. Muhammad was encouraged by “ a great cross section of elected officials in attendance,” including County Legislator Betty Continued Page 11

Amanishakheto, Warrior Queen of Nubia: Forgotten Nubian Ruler

V

ery little is known about the remarkable Queen (Kandake) Amanishaketo of Meroë, Nubia or modern day Sudan. Details about her date of birth, who she may have married and the state of Nubia during her reign are facts that have fallen into obscurity. However, there are artifacts left behind that give us some idea of who she is. Her remaining hieroglyphs state that her name is Amanishaket, or Amanikasheto or Mniskhte in Meroitic hieroglyphs.

She Was a Warrior Queen It is believed that Amanishaketo ruled Nubia from 10 BCE to 1 CE. During her reign, she followed in the footsteps of a former warrior Queen Amanirenas, leading troops with her bow in hand. She was said to be blind in one eye and a reasonably sized woman.

When the Romans broke a peace treaty ensuring that they would not try to invade Nubia, Amanishaketo led the nation’s defenses and warded off the Roman army sent by Augustus.

She Obtained Wealth and Gold Amanishaketo was the ruler of a wealthy kingdom that produced the majority of the gold in ancient Egypt (Kemet). Inside of her tomb, the warrior queen had a variety of gold bracelets, rings, necklaces and crowns that were stolen by treasure hunters, some of which was recovered and later preserved in museums.

Report: Africa Has the Highest Rate of Population Growth Among Major Areas A significant new report from the World Bank has proclaimed: “Africa is the fastestgrowing major area.”

The report – titled “World Population Prospects The 2015 Revision” – found that “more than half of global population growth between now and 2050 is expected to occur in Africa.

“Africa has the highest rate of population growth among major areas, growing at a pace of 2.55% annually in 20102015. Consequently, of the additional 2.4 billion people projected to be added to the global population between 2015 and 2050, 1.3 billion will be added in Africa.”

Black Man Pulled Over for Driving With Air Freshener in Windshield A video of a Providence, R.I., White officer stopping a 23-year-old black man for, driving with an air freshener dangling from his car windshield has gone viral.

Dana Harris Jr. uploaded a cellphone video on YouTube after he was stopped in Mount Hope, R.I., by Providence Officer Brian Murphy on Aug. 24, according to Raw Story.

The shaky cellphone video shows a police car with flashing lights pull up behind Harris as he records the scene.

Here is the exchange in part, according to video: “What’s the problem, big dude?” Harris says, turning the camera back on himself.

“You seen me come out of my driveway,” Harris states.

“What did I do wrong?”

“License and registration, sir,” Murphy asks.

“I have a cousin who’s a Providence police officer for 23 years,” Harris says.

“What’s the problem? ... I’m tired of this. I’m not a gangster. I’m not a thug.”

“Insurance?” the officer asks.

After reviewing the paperwork, the officer returns it, and nods at the windshield, saying, “You can’t have this obstructing your view.”

“Come on, are you serious?”

Republican Presidential Hopeful Ben Chris Christie Calls for a Return of Stop-and-Frisk, Even Though it Didn’t Carson: Are His Racial Politics Too Reduce Crime Conservative for Black Voters?

r. Ben Carson, the retired neurosurgeon who is currently running in second place in the GOP primary, has urged Black people to leave the Democratic Party. Carson says Democratic policies have failed them and they need to embrace the conservatism of the Republican Party. However, recent trips to Ferguson, Mo. and Harlem showed that Carson’s message may be falling on deaf ears. According to The Guardian, Harlem residents were skeptical of his message.

Harlem resident Myrna Coombs said she wouldn’t vote for Carson because she was a Democrat through and through.

“He’s in the wrong party. I like Bernie,” she said, referring to Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Yvonne Boyd, who was selling CDs on Malcolm X Boulevard, was more blunt in her assessment of Carson and Republicans.

“Well, he ain’t gonna do nothing for us,” she told The Guardian. “I think that the mother****** ain’t gonna do s**t.”

During his tour of Ferguson, Carson said he didn’t see race as much of a problem in America. He also said he was raised to respect police and never had a problem with them, even though he grew up in the inner city.

“We need to deemphasize race,” Carson said. “And we need to emphasize respect for everyone in society. And fairness and justice for all.”

He also challenged the Black Lives Matter movement, calling on them to also talk about the Black lives lost to abortion and street violence.

“My beef with the Black Lives Matter movement has been, I think they need to add a word. And that word is ‘All.’ All Black Lives Matter,” said Carson. “Including the ones that are eradicated by abortions, including the ones that are eradicated on the streets every day by violence. We need to be looking at all the factors that have kept the Black community in a very dependent position for decades.”

Carson is a hero in the Black community because of his rise from poverty to the top of the medical field. His autobiography, Healing Hands, is often seen as an inspiration to Black children. However, many people are turned off by his conservative politics.

Ross Baker, professor of political science at Rutgers University, doubted whether Carson would be able to win Black voters over to the GOP. He told The Guardian Barack Obama’s presidency had sealed the ties between the Democratic Party and Black voters.

“Ben Carson’s on a fool’s mission,” Baker said. “If he thought he was going constituency shopping in Ferguson today, he was in the wrong neighborhood.”

John Sousa, national chairman of the Carson-supporting super pac The 2016 Committee, said it was essential that the GOP nominate Carson if they didn’t want to permanently alienate the Black community. He said the Democrats would have the edge if the GOP nominee was anyone other than Carson.

Republican presidential hopeful New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie raised eyebrows recently when he called for a reinstatement of New York City’s controversial stop-and-frisk policy. Appearing on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Christie criticized New York Mayor Bill de Blasio for not supporting police officers.

“Stop-and-frisk would be back in about five minutes,” Christie said. “We would empower the police and not undercut them. If police officers step over the line, they deserve to be taken care of and prosecuted, but this guy, this mayor [Bill de Blasio], presumes guilt on the part of the police officer before anything happens.”

He also accused de Blasio and President Barack Obama of encouraging an atmosphere of lawlessness, where Americans thought it was okay to flout certain rules.

However, stop-and-frisk policies, which were ruled unconstitutional in 2013, have proven to be ineffective at stopping crime. An in-depth study of stop-and-frisk ar-

rests, conducted by sociology professor David F. Greenberg, found “no evidence that mis-

demeanor arrests reduced levels of homicide, robbery, or aggravated assaults.”

Over the past two decades the Love Supreme Jazz Ensemble, formerly led by the late James ‘Pappy’ Martin, annually marked the birthday of the patron saint of jazz and tenor saxophone born September 23, 1926. The Herbie Small jazz quartet will perform various selections and pieces from Love Supreme, arguably the best album John Coltrane ever recorded and consistently mentioned as the greatest album in jazz.

Born in Hamlet, North Carolina, the revolutionary saxophonist John Coltrane was among the most important, and most controversial, figures in jazz despite a relatively brief career. During the late 1940s and early 1950s, he played in nightclubs and on recordings with such musicians as Dizzy Gillespie, Earl Bostic and Johnny Hodges.

Road Less Traveled to Present Frist Public Reading of Gault’s “Wildflower” On Monday, September 21, 2015, Road Less Traveled Theatre Productions, will have the first public reading of the the play “Wildflower”

written by Ntare Ali Gault.

“Wildflower” is the story of a young single mother coming of age in oppressive Mississippi and being raised by an

abusive father. Moving north she finds greater hardships but also realizes that she’s much stronger than imagined.

“Wildflower” is a heartbreaking as well as an inspiring story. This reading is directed

by Willie Judson and features Danica Riddick, Dee Perry, Ronald Williams, Staci Cameron, Annette Daniels Taylor, Willie Judson, Ekaete Bailey, and Verneice Turner.

Paul Robeson Theatre Opens with a reprise of “How I Got Over” The Paul Robeson Theatre (PRT) opens its 2015-2016 season with a reprise of their foot stomping, hand clapping inspirational gospel musical How I Got Over.

How I Got Over was written and is directed by Paulette D. Harris the Artistic Director of the Paul Robeson Theatre. Ms. Harris is an adjunct professor at Buffalo State College. She is a student in the Liberal Studies Program at Empire State College earning her Graduate Degree in Master of Arts in Liberal Studies. Paulette has assembled an outstanding cast of gospel singers such as Beverly Crowell, Annette L. Christian, Juanita Duncan, Tonya Myles-Day, Latosha Payton and Charles Everhart. Shahid Muhammad, known as the “Math Doctor,” will speak at the Frank E. Merrriweather Library located at 1324 Jefferson Avenue on Saturday, September 19.

The doors will open at 1 p.m. and the program will begin at 1:30. Shahid will address the topic: Building Mathematical Power in Students of Color.”

Shahid is the author of “ How to Teach Math to Black Students.” He states in his book that although these strategies of teaching math are specifically designed for the Black student, you will find that it provides assistance and guidance for the mathematics education of all students, regardless of race, age, or religious background. He stated that, “ I hope that the contents of this book will be utilized by those who care about the mathematical competence of our children and our society.”

Shahid Muhammad earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education and Math from Pennsylvania University. He also received a Masters Degree in Mathematics from Lincoln University. Shahid also served as the Math Departm e n t Head at Muhammad University in Chicago, Illinois.

In this position he monitored and evaluated the math program for the entire school as well as produced mathematics curriculum.

Commissioner Elia’s Message Loud and Clear

D

uring a visit to Buffalo just nine days into her tenure, Commissioner MaryEllen Elia told the School Board, in no uncertain terms, that we needed to fix the schools or she would use all the authority at her disposal to do it for us. Between that first visit on July 17th and last week when the District received a second visit from the Commissioner, a flurry of activity has taken place. New State regulations have designated 25 Buffalo Schools as receivership Schools under the authority of the Superintendent (for now). Plans are underway to create models that will show “demonstrable improvement” for those schools in the coming year. The Board has also hired a new Superintendent, Dr. Kriner Cash, whose appointment received active and unprecedented endorsement from the Commissioner. It would appear that the District is on track to addressing the significant issues identified by the Commissioner. So, it was somewhat of a surprise that Commissioner Elia scheduled a second visit to our schools the day after Labor Day. This visit may be a signal that given the Commissioner’s Western New York roots and her strong pronouncements about the District’s future, we can anticipate greater activism on her part with respect to Buffalo’s schools.

Unlike the first visit during which time was set aside to meet with the Board and members of the DPCC, the Commissioner focused her attention on two “persistently struggling schools”, South Park and Burgard. She adBarbara Seals dressed her questions and concerns about these schools to the principals their staffs. She also met separately with several groups of district Nevergold and staff stakeholders: City Hall administrators, representative principals and teachers, including the respective union leaders of the latter two groups.

Accompanied by Regent Catherine Collins, Ms. Elia spent the day in these District meetings.

Although not specifically invited to attend these sessions, I joined the Commissioner and Dr. Collins at South Park and Burgard as well as the principal meeting. In contrast to her predecessor, she has been open to meeting with members of the Buffalo Board and to my knowledge has provided equal access. Board member Paladino also attended the meetings held at South Park High School.

The Commissioner was blunt regarding her assessment of the situation at Burgard and South Park High Schools. She came armed with data regarding teacher effectiveness ratings and student performance as measured by standardized tests. Wasting no time, she told Burgard and South Park staffs that she discerned a “disconnect” between these two measures. She said that while the majority of teachers, in both schools, were evaluated as effective or highly effective, student achievement was not correspondingly ranked. In other words, students with effective teachers are expected to receive test scores that mirror their teachers’ ratings. How did they explain this discrepancy, she queried? The staff members were hard pressed to respond. Her assertion about this disconnect and her question left no doubt that the Commissioner believes that there is a “connect” between these two measures. Although, not a subject for in-depth discussion, the pointed attention given this issue communicated the Commissioner’s support for the hotly contested teacher evaluation system pushed by the Governor and the Legislature.

The Commissioner continued with inquiries about professional development opportunities; administrative follow-up on compliance; and implementation of teaching strategies resulting from the PD. She also asked about concrete strategies that were being instituted to improve student attendance and parental engagement, for example. Demonstrating her knowledge and grasp of best practices, the Commissioner offered a number of suggestions for consideration in improving attendance and other outcomes.

Following up on the Commissioner’s focus on the teacher evaluation and high stakes testing, I asked about her/State Ed’s response to the Opt Out movement. How will the refusal of the ELA and Math exams by over 220,000 students affect the validity of these tests in the future and their use for accountability? Given her previous comments on the teacher evaluation/high stakes test connection, the Commissioner’s answer was consistent. She responded that as I had noted the Opt Out movement did not have strong support in urban schools districts. Fewer children in these districts refused the tests; therefore the scores from last year’s tests could be compared to this year’s scores. No change is forthcoming, she said. The opportunity for dialogue on this issue was not offered and I dropped the subject, at that moment. However, I don’t believe that the answer to my question is as simplistic as the Commissioner indicated. There is a question of the validity of the ELA and Math tests, for a number of reasons; there is a question of the impact made by the Opt Out movement on the future use of high-stakes tests; and even though urban districts in the State, like Buffalo, had relatively few students opt out of the standardized testing, we are part of the New York State Education system. As the system is impacted, so are its parts.

Commissioner Elia’s visit was billed as a “listening tour”. Yet, her message carried more weight.

Her message to Buffalo is unambiguous and has not changed since her first visit. She expects, and education regulations demand “demonstrable improvement”, verified by data, in the “persistently struggling” and “struggling” schools. There is little to no tolerance for failure to achieve progress as defined by the State. And, apparently little room for dialogue that contradicts or questions the State narrative. As she told the staff at South Park, major shifts are required or “you will be taken over”. I can assure the Commissioner that we heard her and we would hope that she will hear us too. We encourage her to open the dialogue to more stakeholders, especially parents and community members; to consider the arguments against high stakes testing and to reevaluate the Common Core Learning Standards. She has an opportunity to partner with Districts throughout the State in strengthening public education.

I hope all will come out to see the film and come back to the community to develop workable strategies to save our youths who are being shot or killed at an alarming rate.

I didn’t hear any thanks to Buffalo teachers but I would hope that on her next visit the Commissioner will find an opportunity to acknowledge the work of these educators as well. That’s a message that needs communicating, too.

His juridical ideas have been borrowed and duplicated in courts all over the United States and the world. He earned his reputation as a national leader by creating special courts for those who suffer at the edge of society. He invented the Buffalo Drug Treatment Court, Veteran’s Treatment Court, and Mental Health Treatment Court and added programs run by volunteers offering support for those who need it. He turned down an appointment to the New York State Supreme Court. He really should be appointed to the United States Supreme Court.

With his charming manners, Judge Russell has won the respect of the Paradise women who anxiously dress in their best outfits to appear before his bench. He is always quick to show his approval. “Good afternoon, Miss Wilson,” he will say leaning slightly towards her and smiling. “I am happy to see you looking so well today. Are you enjoying your stay at Paradise House?” Miss Wilson, reassured, will give him her brightest grin as she replies.

MILLION MAN MARCH continued Jean Grant, and Ellicott District Council member and Pastor Darius Pridgen. He also acknowledged “a great response from the general public. Lots of people came,” he said, “and we developed some actionables that we’ll follow up on.”

In accordance with the current flurry of activity leading up to the 20th anniversary celebration of the historic Million Man March, attendees were reminded of the remarkable feats that resulted. Student Minister Dahveed spoke of the heightened participation of Black men in churches and organizations, the vastly increased numbers of registered voters, and the adoption of over 25,000 Black children by black families.

Also present at the gathering were groups and individuals who are laboring faithfully without the attention afforded to groups that are better known. Mr. Radford made specific mention of them, and committed to a robust collaboration going forward with all of those working to alleviate the pain in the community. He also praised the closing summary offered by Councilman Pridgen, which he thought was fitting. Always on double duty, the good reverend made it clear that he loved what he heard that night, but that it needed to be put into a strategy.

In the consummate pastoral tradition of amplifying with the word, he structured the group’s assignment in the “four E’s…”

Going forward, the group will be striving for quality education, jobs through a focus on both employment and entrepreneurship, and finally, on taking the time to enjoy each other. He also advised that the community hold elected officials accountable, and that we use our talents toward the benefit of the community.

In closing, he emphasized the great potential inherent in coming together to move forward.

She Practiced a Religion Similar to Ancient Egyptians Amanishaketo and many Nubians practiced a spiritual system similar to the ancient Egyptians. Her rings would depict the gods Amun and Anubis. The close proximity of the Egyptians and Nubians, the constant on and off again relationship, and their economic dependence on one another may be some reasons they shared the same gods.

She Was a Pyramid Builder During her reign, Amanishaketo is believed to have overseen the building of many of the pyramids of the Wad ban Naqa site that served as the seat of the Kushite/Nubian Kingdom.

Remains of her palace still exist in this site as well. Her palace was adorned with gold, tall pillars, hieroglyphs, and had about 40 rooms. There are an estimated 12 pyramids on the site. In recent decades, the site has become a new place of exploration for western archaeologists.

Her Pyramid Was Pillaged and Destroyed by Europeans In 1834, Italian treasure hunter Giuseppe Ferlini came upon Meroë in search of rare riches. In his time as a treasure hunter, he destroyed an estimated 40 pyramids and thousands of years of valuable African history. Unfortunately, he destroyed the top of pyramid N6 that served as the tomb of Amanishaketo.

What makes the situation even more awful, is that the pyramid was perfectly intact before it was tampered with. The treasures he found are now located in various museums, including the Egyptian Museum of Berlin.

In a move that was long overdue, Lou Saban was honored and his name went up on the Wall of Fame. In his nine seasons as Head Coach of the Buffalo Bills, Saban compiled a record of 68-45-4 and led the team to AFL Championships in 1964 and 1965. His 68 wins ranks second all-time amongst Bills coaches, only trailing fellow Wall of Famer Marv Levy who finished with 112 victories. (Remember they played more regular season games in Marv’s era).

Booker Edgerson (Wall of Famer from 1964 – 1965 teams) said, “I think it is one of the greatest awards. Being remembered as one of the best teams the Buffalo Bills have had, it is a great pleasure. We brought all the guys back most of the guys, who played during that time and it was a great pleasure seeing them too. It’s a really special honor, because Lou recruited me in college, and he also brought me to Buffalo and took me to Denver as well. Yes 6 foot 10 center Moses Malone died on Sunday morning, and he first made his name in Buffalo, NY playing for the Buffalo Braves. Malone was the first to make the leap right from high school to the pros. He is the NBA’s career leader in offensive rebounds and led the league in rebounds per game for five straight seasons from 1980-1985. Moses Malone was traded from the Portland Trail Blazers to the Buffalo Braves prior to the first game of 1976-1977 season for a first round draft pick. After two games Malone was traded to Houston Rockets in exchange for two future first round draft picks. Malone’s staggering statistics across 21 seasons and 1,455 professional games included 20.3 points and 12.3 rebounds per game. He holds NBA records for offensive rebounds in a career 6,731, season 587, and in a game 21. Malone was a 12 time all-star and chosen as one of the league’s 50 greatest players. Malone was back in his home state for a weekend fundraising event for the Norfolk-based Still Hope Foundation, which provides assistance to single mothers in southeastern Virginia. He always gave of his time to support many causes in the community. He will be missed by one and all.
