Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Rho Lambda Chapter Honors 22 Local Fathers at the My Fathers Keeper Awards Brunch Rho Lambda, The Buffalo Graduate Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. the first African-American collegiate Fraternity established, held their “My Fathers Keeper” jazz brunch honoring area Fathers at the Buffalo Convention Center on August 24.

The Fraternity honored a vast selection of new, modern or seasoned fathers who are present in their families, active in their communities and exemplify fatherhood. Many times the work and dedication of these fathers are overlooked.

Community Music School Moving from Elmwood to Hamlin Park Community Music School of Buffalo is moving into the Hamlin Park neighborhood.

The organization, currently located at 415 Elmwood Ave. near Bryant Street, has sold its longtime Elmwood Village building.

It is expected to move to the former Lutheran Church Home on East Delavan Avenue in October.

The school says its current location no longer fits the organization's needs and the new home will help it bring music education to a wider audience.

Annual Back-to-School Rally The Annual Back-to-School Rally hosted by retired teacher Eva M. Doyle will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2019 at the Merriweather Library from 3 - 5 p.m. Free school supplies and book bags will be given out to students. There will also be academic games in science, math, Black History, and Language arts. A special show and tell will also be included where students have to answer the question" What is It?" he “press conference” held at the Bennett Smith Family Life Center to dispel any rumors and hear the concerns of residents, turned into a near shouting match at the end. At the close of the session, which lasted a little over an hour, it was clear that transparency between the Tower’s owners, the new management ( Capital Realty), and tenants, was a major issue.

Residents felt they were being kept in the dark about what was going on, which fueled some of the rumors (i.e. The Towers had been sold and are being turned into luxury apartments and tenants would be displaced). The fact that representatives from the management company were not present only raised residents suspicions and outrage. One tenant questioned why Rev.Michael Chapman, the pastor of St. John, was not present. Another accused the three members of being less than truthful although they appeared to be doing their best to answer questions. The Board Chairman Mr. Lewis assured that “at no point will we lose ownership of St. John towers.” He also vowed that St. John would remained true to its original vision as “a place to house our seniors.

A series of meetings between tenants and management are being panned and “St. John Tower will remain affordable and no tenant displaced” before or after the renovations, which will be taking place over the next 12 months. The board members also promised to address tenants concens of insensitivity and of being snubbed by the new management team. One tenant described Capital as “sowing seeds of dissension and chaos” at the Towers. Some immediate concerns included a broken intercom system, and lack of security in the building. Those issues the board members said, would also be quickly addressed. “Residents are afraid because they don’t know what’s going on,” declared Lynnette Joyner Tenant Council President. ” They don’t know what’s going to happen to them.” Tenants want everything made plain in writing for their own peace of mind.

More transparency will go a long way to keep the rumors in check. Meanwhile residents will remain vigilant to ensure that St. John Towers remains, as Rev. B.W. Smith envisioned decades ago, “the last place between here and Glory” for our seniors.

Legislator Baskin Calls on New York State to Expedite Report on Recent Jail Deaths (Buffalo, NY) Erie County Legislature Chair April N. M. Baskin, who has championed reforms in the Erie County Sheriff’s Office since taking office, is calling on a state agency to approach their investigation with a sense of urgency.

“We are in a state of emergency regarding detainee care at the Erie County Holding Center,” said Erie County Legislature Chair April N. M. Baskin. “I implore the state Commission of Correction to expedite their reports into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of Joseph E. Bialaszewski and Connell Burrell.”

Baskin noted “These latest cases add to the public’s distrust and frustration over the Sheriff’s stonewalling and lack of transparency. While we prepare for the Commission of Correction's final reports on the most recent deaths, I look forward to beginning an open, public recruitment process for the Erie County Corrections Specialist Advisory Board (ECCSAB) as the legislature returns from recess in September. Once it is fully operational, the ECCSAB will provide the Sheriff’s Office with professional oversight and to demand accountability.”

Black Pullman Porters

The Black History Behind Labor Day Labor Day was founded after the Pullman Strike of 1894, when President Cleveland was hoping to gain political allyship by honoring railroad workers. However, the story about the involvement of the Black Pullman porters in the labor movement is not always told.

“Pullman porters were Black men who worked in the train cars attending to their mostly white passengers, performing such tasks as shining shoes, carrying bags, and janitorial services. During this period, this profession was the largest employer of Blacks in the nation and constituted a significant portion of the Pullman company’s workforce…”

Despite Black porters being a significant part of the Pullman’s workforce, they were not allowed to strike and were also denied access to the labor union.

This led Black railroad workers to form their own union, the Brotherhood of the Sleeping Car Porters, which was the first Black union in America. A. Philip Randolph was the first president of the union, and he was also the brains behind the first March on Washington. The march ended up being called off after President Roosevelt met with Randolph and other Civil Rights leaders. The event was canceled because President Roosevelt signed an order “barring racial discrimination in the federal defense industry.”

Virginia Marks the Dawn of American Slavery in 1619 About 2,000 people went to African Landing Day at Fort Monroe last weekend commemorating the 400th anniversary of the first Africans to arrive in English-speaking North America.

They faced the sunrise to the rhythm of drums and waves on a windswept beach, dozens wearing white, near the spot where the first enslaved Africans arrived at the English colony of Virginia in 1619. Last Saturday, they would release those spirits.

The cleansing and naming ritual, presided over by visiting chiefs from Cameroon, kicked off a weekend of events marking the 400th anniversary of the Africans’ arrival and the dawn of American slavery.

In late August 1619, an English pirate ship, the White Lion, arrived at Point Comfort, near today’s Hampton, Va. It was carrying what colonist John Rolfe described as “20 and odd Negroes.”

The captain of the White Lion traded the enslaved people for food, bringing slavery to Jamestown and what would become Virginia.

They came from Angola with skills and trades and saved a struggling colony.

“The question of release hung over a day that walked a fine line: commemorating the nation’s fundamental sin of slavery but also celebrating the African descendants who survived its brutality and helped build America."

Flint Water Crisis Worsens, City Spills 2 Million Gallons of Sewage Into River As if residents of Flint, Mich., haven’t endured enough when it comes to the city’s water supply, they now have millions of gallons of raw sewage to contend with.

The city dumped an estimated 2 million gallons of untreated sewage into the Flint River Sunday, Aug. 18, just months after officials warned wastewater infrastructure was fast approaching a “critical point.”

A partial report filed by the city with the state Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy on Tuesday, Aug. 20, says a “flash flood event” overflowed primary settling tanks at the city’s wastewater treatment plant on Beecher Road, sending raw waste onto the ground and into a storm sewer drain that discharges directly to the river.

A Violent Epidemic Spread by U.S. Guns Worldwide, 32 percent of homicides are committed with firearms, according to the Igarape Institute, a research group. In Jamaica, the figure is higher than 80 percent. And most of those guns come from the United States, amassed by exploiting loose American gun laws that facilitate the carnage.

September 25, 1961 · Liberty, Mississippi Herbert Lee, who worked with civil rights leader Bob Moses to help register Black voters, was killed by a state legislator who claimed self-defense and was never arrested. Louis Allen, a Black man who witnessed the murder, was later also killed.

August 13, 1955 · Brookhaven, Mississippi Lamar Smith was shot dead on the courthouse lawn by a white man in broad daylight while dozens of people watched. The killer was never indicted Smith had organized Blacks to vote in a recent election.

Sinking Cities Indonesia has said the country would be relocating its capital city, in part because it's sinking into the Java Sea. Jakarta is one of the fastest sinking cities in the world, according to the World Economic Forum, due to rising sea levels and the over-extraction of groundwater. The move will cost an estimated 486 trillion rupiah ($34 billion) and take about 10 years.

Other sinking cities around the world include:Houston, Texas; Lagos, Nigeria; New Orleans, Louisiana; Beijing, China; Washington, D.C.

GYC- Viaduct to Viaduct Justice for Sister Jeanneie! Noted Physician, Will Keynote 9th Victorian Mid-Day Dinner & Tea Community-Wide Party

F

or everyone living within the area bounded by East Ferry St., Colorado Ave., Walden Ave and Wasmuth Ave. GYC means only one thing and that is Good Year Crew and it has nothing to do with the negative attitude people gave the area in the 1980s when the high incidence of shootings and drug activity made the area and its residents an unfair focus of the local, nightly news.

For the many hard working and law abiding residents, GYC was a term that was used to identify the vibrant people that lived in the community from the viaduct on Colorado Ave., to the viaduct on Wasmuth Ave. From this supposedly depressed area, children have gone on to college and are now doctors, lawyers, artists, teachers, preachers and politicians.

On Saturday, Sept. 14th, from 9a.m.-7p.m., a newly formed group, the GYC-Viaduct to Viaduct Committee, will host in collaboration with Ms. Tina Sanders, founder of No More Tears and Pastor Anthony Brown, the 1st annual GYC- Viaduct to Viaduct Community-wide Party on Genesee St. between Moselle St. and Nevada Ave.

On July 16 an African American Muslim woman, Mrs. Jeanneie Muhammad was assaulted by a hand-gun brandishing White man after a minor traffic incident in North Buffalo. Her keys were snatched out of her ignition, he tried to take her purse and a struggle ensued. Mrs. Muhammad was thrown to the ground and he drew a hand gun on her. Fortunately the incident was video-taped and posted. Sister Jeanneie suffered damage to her knee and a concussion.

Her attacker remains free on bail.

Davheed concerns about inadequate charges and lack appropriate response from law enforcement officers regarding this traumatic assault on our Sister.

This crime must not be swept under the rug!

amie Kirkland, who will turn 111 years old on September 3, says the secret to her longevity is God’s grace. A beautiful spirit with a ready smile, she is an inspiration to us all! According to her son, Tarabu Betserai, this year will be much quieter. She will attend church service on Sunday September 1st at First Shiloh Baptist Church as is her birthday wish.

As a young child, the amazing Mrs. Kirkland survived racial terror and a treacherous migration from the deep South. During her ordinary yet extraordinary life, she raised nine children and became a model of how steady faith and love creates awareness and change. Mamie earned national recognition from the New York Times for her story of hardship and hope, and her courageous return to Mississippi is a reminder that we still have a lot of work to do.

She was presented with a Champion of Justice medallion as the oldest lynching survivor at the opening of the Equal Justice Initiative’s National Legacy Museum. Her story is one of five digital stories that are on permanent display at the museum.

She recalls being only 7 years old when her father came home after midnight in terror and told her mother to pack up the kids and leave town first thing in the morning (1915) because the KKK was going to hang him from a tree.

Although they escaped to E. St. Louis, the friend who he left town with her dad, John Hartsfield - at some point returned to Ellisville, Mississiippi where he was accused of assaulting a White woman and lynched. He was first shot and kept alive in a doctor’s office so he could be publically hung the next day.

The front page of the Mississippi State Daily Newspaper announced his pending lynching with headlines that read: - John Hartsfield To be lynched by Ellisville Mob at 5 p.m.”

he NICYO Rick James Funk Fest topped itself this past Saturday for its 15th anniversary at LaSalle Park with a plethora of local talent and the long awaited Buffalo return of 1980s Dayton-Ohio electro-funk legends Zapp.

Those arriving early in the balmy afternoon sunshine were treated to vibrant sets from Delivered, DCT & The Music Company, Uncle Willie & the Fellas, Tim Brown and Intuition.

In a dapper blue suit fronting a six-piece band, Uncle Willie paid tribute to Marvin Gaye and James Brown, with “I Want You” and “It’s A Man’s World” while Intuition brought first rate musicianship with takes on The Whispers’ “Rock Steady” and Chaka Khan’s “Do You Love What You Feel.”

With a style reminiscent of Morris Day, Denzell Ward & Cool Platinum kicked out classics like The Ohio Players’ “Love Rollercoaster” and Brick’s “Ain’t Gonna Hurt Nobody” and dedicated their set to the late Milton Salter.

A special shout out to the “Mary Jane Babies,” who entertained the crowd between sets with their endearing dance work outs.

Rick’s brother Carmen Sims and the iconic Val Young (who organizer Marnetta Malcolm hinted may headline next year’s fest) graced the stage before drummer and original Zapp member Lester Troutman, Sr. received a proclamation before the headliners took the stage.

As the gorgeous, late-summer sun set over Lake Erie, the Zapp band got right down to bass driven, talk-boxed, funky goodness with “So Ruff So Tough,” the first of a back to back set of show stoppers that included “Dance Floor” and “Computer Love, ” each cornerstones of the electro-funk sub-genre, which thanks to artists like Tupac, Dr. Dre and, most recently, Dam-Funk and Tuxedo ( with whom Zapp recently released the single “Shy”) has seen a longevity lasting four decades. Yet Troutman feels the term deserves a bit of scrutiny.

“I don’t know if I’d call it ‘electro-funk’ because when we recorded most of those records in the 1970s and 1980s there was nothing electric except the tape machines,” he shared in a post concert interview. “The handclaps- that was all meat and potatoes. There were no drum machines, they were all live drums. The talk box was electric but that was done many years before us by Stevie Wonder, Sly Stone and Peter Frampton.”

Whatever you want to call it, it had everybody on their feet and along with an infectiously extrovert stage presence that included back flips, a party train through the audience culminating with audience members marching onstage and a video screen that displayed images of dancing grapes on “I Heard it Through the Grapevine” and a bouncing low-rider during the monster “More Bounce to the Ounce,” it was joyous funk overload. Not to mention the confetti and light-up suits during “Do Wa Ditty.”

A poignant moment occurred following “I Wanna Be Your Man” where the actual video showing the late-Roger Troutman was shown. Troutman discussed the murder-suicide of founding member Roger and his brother Larry in 1999, and his decision to carry on after the tragedy while also reminiscing about opening for Rick in Buffalo at a 1980 concert at the Aud. The show ended with the epic “California Love” both a tribute to Roger and Tupac and as Troutman walked out in the crowd to graciously speak to smiling fans he acknowledged the group’s loyal following and said, "We’re getting new fans everyday. When new fans hear the music they think it’s fresh and fun and that’s what we were doing back in the day. We were just having fun, trying to make people happy and dance.”

‘Soul Train’ Might Stop at Broadway Theater

Broadway may soon get its own “Soul Train.” Three prominent Black women in contemporary theater will form the core creative team. . “Soul Train” left the air in 2006.

uffalo born and raised Shawn Barron and Ian Martin, are currently residents of Los Angeles where they are successfully pursuing their individual careers - Shawn as Vice President of A&R at Atlantic Records; and Ian as Head Assistant to Khloe Kardashian’s stylist.

The two talented brothers recently returned to the Queen City to visit their mom, noted hair stylist and businesswoman LaFondra Martin, their role model and the one person they credit with inspiring them the most.

“I made sure they got a good education,” LaFondra said reflecting on her sons upbringing. “They saw their mother work very hard to get them where they needed to go in life…and I’m so proud of them.”

They also watched her give back in terms of being involved in the community with various organizations – both civic and political.

“My hope for them is that they give back the blessings that the Lord has bestowed upon them,” the life long member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church continued. “That they have enough power and drive to help others along the way.”

While at Cardinal O’Hara High, Shawn said his original goal was to play basketball.

That changed when he attended college at Seaton Hall University in South Orange, NJ. “While I was in college I wanted to be a sports agent," Shawn said, adding that he had no interest in going into music. “Then a friend wanted to be a rapper and asked me to manage him…that’s basically how I got interested."

While working on his Bachelors degree in Communications, his last semester was spent interning at Universal Records. After his internship, Koch Records hired him for a mailroom position.

was given the okay to search for more artists.

The rest is history.

He travels all over the country scouting new talent and was responsible for the signing of Ty Dolla $ign and several other notable names. He has also worked with the likes of Cardi B, Bruno Mars and has helped out on releases from Lupe Fiasco, Wiz Khalifa, B.O.B. and Trey Songz, among others.

Being around so many celebrities his upbringing has paid off; keeping him focused and level headed.

“Shawn Barron knows talent when he sees it. Since scouting Drake to Koch Records back in 2007, he’s pushed a number of artists that labels failed to pick up before the hype begin. From Wale to Curren$y and even Kevin Rudolph, Barron knew their potential early on in their

Ian, 20, has also had the opportunity to work the celebrated Fashion Week in New York City.

“I have always liked styling,” said Ian. As a kid he remembers styling friends around the neighborhood.

And since he was 15 years old he would go back and forth to LA to visit his brother. Ian’s goal is become a top stylist and go into brand management. If talent has anything to do with him reaching that goal, he’s right on track.

A graduate of Cheektowaga Central who studied briefly at the Academy of Art at the University of San Francisco, he credits his fashion sense to his mom, who acknowledges that she recognized his talent since he was about 8 years old. Others have as well.

“I’ve been dressing my whole life,” she said with a laugh. “I love style and fashion. That’s where my son picked it up from.”

-Giving BackShawn says he’s always looking for ways to give back to his community and acknowledges there’s a lot of talent in Buffalo.

He’s done some scouting here and enjoys talking to young people about the music industry. Most want to know how they can get started.

The business he was once quoted as saying, is very cut throat and not designed for everyone.

“There is no real way to really get in…it’s based on your talent,” he said “I’d still like to do a music festival here and I’m trying to put it together,” he continued.

He’s also working to develop his own record label which he calls “Too Easy.”

However no one knows better than Shawn that getting into the industry is not easy at all. Nor is the road to success in general. You have to have talent and you have to be prepared.

“To be successful you have to be consistent in what you do and work toward it every day…it will work out,” assured Shawn.

UNIA-ACL Buffalo Division to Host International Pan-African Holiday Observance and An Evening With Eminent Scholar, Historian, Author and Lecturer Dr. Runoko/Rashidi The International Pan-African Holiday Observance, hosted by the UNIA-ACL Buffalo Division #433, will be held on Saturday, August 31 at the CAO Rafi Green Center, 1423 Fillmore from 6-10 p.m. The free event will feature music, games, food, face painting and more.

On Tuesday, September 3, the UNIA will present “An Evening With Dr. Runoko Rashidi,” eminent scholar, historian, author and lecturer from 5-8 p.m. at the Merriweather Library, Jefferson @ E. Utica.

-About Dr. RashidiDr. Runoko Rashidi is an anthropologist and historian with a major focus on what he calls the Global African Presence – that is, Africans outside of Africa before and after enslavement. He is the author of eighteen books, the most recent of which are My Global Journeys in Search of African Presence and AssataGarvey and Me: A Global African Journey for Children in 2017.

His other works include Black Star: The African Presence in Early Europe and African Star Over Asia: The Black Presence in the East and Uncovering the African Past: The Ivan Van Sertima Papers. His other works include the African Presence Early Asia, co-edited by Dr. Van Sertima.

Dr. Rashidi has worked with and under some of the most distinguished scholars of our generation, including Ivan Van Sertima, John Henrik Clarke, Asia G. Hilliard, Edward Scobie, John G. Jackson, Jan Carew and Yosef ben-Jochannan.

He is currently pursuing a major work on the African presence in the museums of the world.

As a tour leader he has taken groups all over the world. A tour to Senegal, Gambia, Guinea Bissau is scheduled for January 21 – February 4, 2020.

Runoko Rashidi’s major mission in life is the upliftment of African people those at home and abroad. He is the official Traveling Ambassador for Marcus Garvey’s Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) and African Communities league.

In an interview with Kentake Page last August Dr. Rashidi was asked the question: “ What do we need to do to take our communities to the next level?” He answered: “Black Love is perhaps the greatest form of resistance to global white supremacy. I think the unity of the Black man and Black woman is the pillar of our community and the foundation block for Black liberation, Black progress and Black empowerment If we cannot unite as a loving unit, then we might as well stop talking. That is the key. A Black man and Black woman come together in order to be about the healing process that our community so desperately needs. That is fundamental.

“It is Black Love… we’ve survived colonization and enslavement and when you consider what we have gone through, the fact that we are here to have this conversation is in and of itself a miracle and a testimony of the greatness and resilience and majesty of Afrikan people.” .

Were There Other Factors Involved in the Recent Hate Crimes?

T

he mass killings in El Paso and Dayton are still fresh in my mind. It was just a few weeks ago that America took another nosedive with these senseless murders all happening within a 24-hour time period. The reasons behind these killings have a lot of people thinking about different scenarios.

Hate is the operative word in this tragedy.

These were killing sprees of epic proportions. It will take a while for these cities to recover from these atrocities. We were blindsided emotionally by these acts of cowardice. Now we are left to pick up the pieces and ask ourselves how did our humanity reach such a low level?

When the parents and loved ones of the shooters were interviewed, their responses were such that they were surprised and shocked by what happened. However, isolation and aloofness were common themes for both individuals. So, what can be made of these statements?

You can assume they were raised in good homes. We see good people who have virtues and morals every day. The question is whether any of this rubs off on their children? We teach them to tell the truth and to go to school each day. The problem comes in when they enter the public square. There, peer pressure grabs hold and sometimes won’t let go. Unfortunately, and tragically the shooters in Charleston, El Paso and Dayton succumbed to peer pressure among other things.

Weak minds take on bad information and use it to the detriment of others. One shooter drove many hours to El Paso to kill innocent people. Did racism or poor mental health control him?

Where did he acquire such intense hatred of another ethnicity?

Racism and mental illness are two diseases First, racism has caused many deaths, injuries and ill will along the way. Racism spawns hate. It’s clear the Charleston SC church shooting was about race. The gunman was white and armed, and the victims were Black and unarmed.

Could mental illness have been a part of the shooter’s undoing? I don’t think so. It was just his innate belief that as a White person he was simply better, and he was willing to kill to uphold his demented thinking. So far there has not been any evidence regarding mental illness in his case.

According to reports from the World Health Organization, one out of every four persons is affected by some mental or brain disorder at some point in their lifetime. Many of us have family members who suffer from depression or some other type of mental illness. This health problem has not always been at the forefront of our medical concerns as it is today.

For example, 46 million people in the US suffer from some type of mental illness. And approximately 11 million people in this country suffer from some serious form of mental illness.

These numbers are staggering yet these are only the reported numbers.

There are people who suffer from mental illness and they are not counted in the statistics. People that we know but don’t know they are suffering from mental illness. Every day, members in our community go to work and lead families but suffer silently from mental illness.

Many in the current administration including the president suggest the shooters in El Paso and Dayton suffered from mental illness. While others wonder if blaming mental illness is a convenient answer to avoid stronger gun legislation.

As we know, the issue of better background checks has been on both federal and state dockets. So far, there has been little action taken. Sadly, at this moment someone out there is planning something bad. We simply don’t know when and how bad. Unfortunately, this is becoming a bitter refrain for America. What can we do to stop it?

Will more resources given to mental health problems avoid what many see as a crisis? Will gun advocates finally see that tighter regulations are needed? Yes, we need more mental health programs and yes, we need stricter gun control laws.

But what about hate?

Ethiopia Will Rise Again!

ueen Mother Leota Henry, daughter of Historical Buffalo Division #79’s most decorated member, 1st Asst. Sec. Gen. Percival Burrows, fondly remembers her father often saying the phrase “Ethiopia will rise again.”

This was a popular saying among Garveyites in the early years. There was a general understanding about the significance of Ethiopia in the larger picture of the African diaspora. While many African history scholars focus on Egypt/Kemet and its greatness, the UNIA-ACL has always incorporated Ethiopia in its foundational understanding of nationhood. When we study our history as a people, we can understand why.

Primarily, we can start with “Life” itself.

We know that the ‘Out of Africa’ explanation as to the origins of humanity, could just as easily be called the ‘Out of Ethiopia” theory.

“Dinknesh (meaning ‘you are marvelous’ or ‘the wondrous one’), was discovered on November 24, 1974 by paleo-anthropologist Donald Johanson at Hadar in the Awash Valley of the Afar Triangle in Ethiopia, showing that Africa is the birthplace of humanity. Dinknesh’s European name is Lucy”. (Meserette 2016) Next, we turn to Greece. In the Iliad and Odyssey (@ 850 BCE), it is written of Iris, Poseidon and Zeus along with all of the other gods feasting with the loyal and lordly Ethiopians. Dr. Yosef Ben Jochannan has stated, “One has to realize that Hip-

In the Famine Stele (@250 BCE), we find a conversation between King Neterkhet and Chief Priest Imhotep. The discussion is based around returning to African origins to fix current issues. The king asks, “In which place is Hapi born?” Imhotep replied “I shall go to the Mansion of the Net. It is designed to support a man in his deeds. I shall enter the House of Life, unroll the scrolls of Ra, I shall be guided by them.” Dr. Ben deciphers the stele as saying, “We came from the beginning of the Nile where God-Hapi dwells, at the foothills of the mountain of the Moon.” Geographically and historically this area is Ethiopia.

Some of the oldest known maps have both the African and the Asian land masses marked as Aethiopia. The bodies of water surrounding them marked Aethiopian Ocean.

Fast forward to more modern times to the Ethiopian-Italian Wars. The first, in 1896 secured Ethiopian sovereignty against a major colonial power. Emperor Menelik II won his glorious victory on March 1, 1896, forever celebrated on Adwa Day, March 2nd every year.

In 1920, President General Marcus Garvey said, “Look to the east, when a Black man is crowned, our liberation will be at hand.” Ten years later, in the sovereign land of Ethiopia, H.I.M. Haile Selassie I was crowned with the distinct title of “King of Kings” or “Nəgusä Nägäst.” In 1937 the Ethiopian

Take A Sand! Sheriff Howard Needs to Go! Dear Editor: Buffalo this is a time that we should all come together. Today it’s my brother but tomorrow it could be yours.

Our elected sheriff Howard seems to think that he is above the law. The governor, NYS commission of corrections, the U.S.department of Justice and tons of lawsuits and he still hasn’t changed the way he governs the holding center. Why do we have to stand by and watch another person lose their life?

We don’t, I am asking for support for my brother Connell & the 25 other victims noted.

We are rallying every Wednesday in front of the holding center from 4:30-6:00, if you are reading this, please join us. Any portion of your time would be greatly appreciated.

Ask yourself, should 18, 26,27,29 or 44 year olds die because of deteriorating health issues or lack of medical treatment? My brother wasn’t even inside of those walls for 14 hours.

Gen. Burrows says, “Ethiopia, will rise again.” Ase' The International Pan-African Holiday Observance, hosted by the UNIA-ACL Buffalo Division #433, will be held on Saturday, August 31 at the CAO Rafi Green Center, 1423 Fillmore from 6-10 p.m. The free event will feature music, games, food, face painting and more.

On Tuesday, September 3, the UNIA will present “An Evening With Dr. Runoko Rashidi,” eminent scholar, historian, author and lecturer from 5-8 p.m. at the Merriweather Library, Jefferson @ E. Utica.

Both events are free and open to the public.

Congratulations to Buffalo Bison’s pitcher T.J. Zeuch threw a No-hitter against Rochester Red Wings a week ago. He just needed 114 pitches/ 73 of them were strikes for his first career no-hitter in the Bison’s 3 – 0 win. Nate Pearson made his Triple-A debut and pitched 8 dominating innings against Rochester. Bison’s outfielder Jonathan Davis is worth the price of admission to see him play and make unbelieveable catches in the outfield.

Property owners will have thirty (30) days from the date of publication of the notice of adoption to appeal this schedule of rates and charges to the Erie County Legislature. Appeals should be sent to the Erie County Legislature, 92 Franklin Street, Buffalo, NY 14202, Attention: Clerk of the Legislature.

The aforesaid schedule of charges will be collected annually with the regular County Sewer (special) District charges.
