Annual Clarissa Street Reunion Kicks Off This Weekend!

The annual Clarissa Street Reunion will be held from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, August 18 to Wednesday August 22. It takes place in one of the most culturally rich neighborhoods in Rochester. The event celebrates a neighborhood known for producing renowned jazz musicians in the 1940's, 1950's, and 1960's. Clarissa Street, which is located in the southwest quadrant of Rochester and in the old 3rd Ward, was a true melting pot that brought together people of Black, Italian, Irish, and Jewish descent. Streets were cobblestone and trolley cars were a familiar sight. The Clarissa Street Reunion, held annually since 1996, is a wonderful celebration of the memories and the relationships that were formed in the neighborhood.

Community Celebration at Former American Axle Site

The community is invited to come out and celebrate the remediation of the former American Axle site. On Thursday, August 23 at 5:45 p.m. at the Delavan Grider Community Center, 877 E. Delavan Avenue.

For over 30 years this site has been ground zero of contamination in the community. This cleanup is a result of years of organizing by residents and the hard work of the American Axle Seering Committee.

Kerns Bowling Center Celebrates 10th Business Anniversary Mayor Declares “Kerns Avenue Bowling Center” Day

W

hen Daniel Adams purchased Kerns Avenue Bowling Center, naysayers said he wouldn’t last more than two or three years.

That was a decade ago. Last Saturday Daniel, his wife Francena (pictured right) and their able staff hosted their 10th anniversary celebration which included free bowling, food and drinks for kids and specials for adults until closing.

They also received a Proclamation from Mayor Byron Brown who declared August 11 “Kerns Avenue Bowling Center Day” in The City Of Buffalo.

The proclamation cited the following: •Daniel Adams Jr. serves as President and CEO of Kerns Avenue Bowling Center, located at 163 Kerns Avenue, the only African American owned bowling facility in the state of NY. •Dan is a member of the Western NY Proprietors Association. He is trained and certified from the Buffalo State Restaurant Institute, and Bowling Center School of Management and is actively involved with the International Bowl Expo and East Coast Bowling Centers conferences and workshops.

•It’s been over a decade since he purchased the business and since that time he has established several sanctioned leagues; hosted the citywide television program, “Beat the Champ,” has sponsored several community youth activities and bowling classes/ leagues, and hosts the Buffalo Public School bowling program.

•Daniel Adams Jr. worked at the New York Telephone Company, and trained and served in the Military Police for the United States Army. He is a lifelong member of NAACP, and the recipient of several awards and honors.

A native of Buffalo, Dan attended Buffalo Public Schools, graduated from Bennett High School and received a degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences from Erie Community College.

He and his wife Francena have two daughters and five granddaughters. Congratulations!

T

he Black Codes were laws passed by Southern states in 1865 and 1866 in the United States after the American Civil War with the intent and the effect of restricting African Americans' freedom, and of compelling them to work in a labor economy based on low wages or debt. Black Codes were part of a larger pattern of Southern whites, who were trying to suppress the new freedom of emancipated African-American slaves, the freedmen.

Black codes were essentially replacements for slave codes in those states. Before the war in states that prohibited slavery, some Black Codes were also enacted. Northern states such as Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan,and New York enacted Black Codes to discourage free Blacks from residing in those states and denying them equal rights, including the right to vote, the right to public education, and the right to equal treatment under the law. Some of these northern Black codes were repealed around the same time that the civil war ended and slavery was abolished.

Since the colonial period, colonies and states had passed laws that discriminated against free Blacks. In the South, these were generally included in "slave codes"; the goal was to reduce influence of free Blacks (particularly after slave rebellions) because of their potential influence on slaves. Restrictions included prohibiting them from voting (although North Carolina allowed this before 1831), bearing arms, gathering in groups for worship and learning to read and write. A major purpose of these laws was to preserve slavery among other things.

In the first two years after the Civil War, white-dominated southern legislatures passed Black Codes modeled after the earlier slave codes.

BRAZIL’S MURDER RATE

Primary Victory In Ferguson ‘Gives Hope’

Brazil has beat its own record for homicides: 63,880 people were murdered across the country in 2017, up 3 percent from the year before, according to a new study. That’s 175 deaths per day.

Brazil’s murder rate has soared as rival drug gangs battle for territory in a country that shares borders with the three biggest cocaine producing countries in the worldColumbia, Peru and Bolivia.

Brazil is a major consumer of both cocaine and crack and a key transit point for cocaine headed to Europe and Asia.

The majority of victims are young, black, male and poor, and often live in the favelas, or slums where gang warfare has been most pronounced.

Many of the victims- 5,144were killed by police officers. That’s an average of 14 people killed by police each day, a number that went up by 20 percent over the previous year.

Four years after Michael Brown was murdered in the streets of Ferguson, MO., and the riots that followed, Wesley Bell, a young Black lawyer and son of a police officer, beat Robert McCulloch in a democratic primary. McCulloch is the prosecutor who declined to charge Darren Wilson, the police officer who shot Mr. Brown. It was the first time that Mr. McCulloch, who had held the job for 27 years, had faced re-election since the Ferguson protests, when critics accused him of being too close to law enforcement to properly oversee the investigation into Mr. Brown’s death.

There is no Republican candidate in the November general election, so Mr. Bell, 43, will most likely be a lock for the prosecutor’s office. But Mr. Bell and his supporters said that Tuesday’s victory, which he won by a comfortable margin, was about more than just the Michael Brown case. The city’s criminal justice system is still plagued by fundamental inequality, local activists said, with poor Black residents often sitting in jail for days for minor traffic offenses.

RESEGRAGATION Schools are resegregating.

The percentage of black students who are attending schools that are 90 to 100 percent minority went down in the South in the 1970s and 1980s, but now is shooting up.

In the Northeast, the percentage of black students in these schools has been climbing for decades.

Even the workplace is showing signs of regression. Big companies are still reasonably integrated, but newer, smaller businesses are more segregated, often largely white, black or Hispanic.

CONGO’S KABILA PLANS TO STEP DOWN Joseph Kabila, who took over the Democratic Republic of Congo at age 29 after the assassination of his father in 2001, announced on Wednesday he would not stand for re-election, raising hopes the country might carry out a peaceful transition of power for the first time in its modern history.

Congo, a vast and ethically diverse nation, has never had a peaceful transition of power.

Independence in 1960 was immediately followed by conflicts among various factions, backed by different sides in the Cold War. Congo is one of the world’s most resource –rich countries, but its people are among the world’s poorest.

Muslim Woman With Palestinian Roots Wins Race For Congress Detroit- Rashida Tlaib is poised to become the first Muslim woman ever elected to Congress, after she narrowly defeated Brenda Jones Detroit’s City Council president, in a Democratic primary race to succeed longtime Representative John Conyers Jr. in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District. She will run unopposed in November.

Ms. Tlaib is a former Michigan state legislator, Detroit native and daughter of Palestinian immigrants. “A lot of my strength comes from being Palestinian,” she said at one point. “ I will fight back against every racist and oppressive structure that needs to be dismantled,” Ms. Tlaib said. “You deserve better than what we have today with our president.”

More than 90 Muslims- mostly Democrats- have entered races for local , state or national public office, according to Jetpac, a nonprofit that advocates civic engagement across the country. “ I want people across the country to know that you don’t need to sell out,” Ms. Tlaib said. “You don’t have to change who you are to run for office- and that is what this country is about.”

Summer Festival at the African American Heritage Corridor

O

n Thursday, August 16th, the Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor, the Coppertown Block Club and Groundwork Buffalo will be hosting the second annual summer festival in the Corridor. It will take place on Michigan Avenue between Broadway and Arsenal from 11am to 6pm.

This festival celebrates the Corridor museums (which will be free and open to the public), the ongoing work of the Groundwork Buffalo Green Team youth to beautify the Corridor, and the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus Spark Grant efforts to connect with and support neighborhood organizations.

The festival will include food, live entertainment, kids’ activities, Buffalo Book Bike, gardening demonstrations and more. Attendees will also have the opportunity to give input and share ideas for new or improved green spaces in the neighborhood, and take part in the real-time creation of a collective garden for Michigan Avenue. POWER 96.5 will be broadcasting live!

There will be: free museum tours of the Nash House, Michigan Street Baptist Church, Colored Musicians Club, and the newly opened WUFO Black Radio History Collective Museum that will take place from 11a.m. to 4p.m.

New Business Directory Connecting Consumers to Black and Brown Businesses in Buffalo!

T

hat Brown Bag, the new business directory connecting black and brown business to local consumers , will make its official release on August 24 through a networking event at the Johnnie B Wiley Sports Pavillion,1100 Jefferson Ave., between 6 -10 p.m.

The event is designed to introduce the public to the faces behind some of the businesses listed in the directory as well as the publication’s founder and author, Shantelle L. Patton and cofounder Jay P. Hawkins Sr. They are also people behind popular artists support group The Dopeness Project.

“I’ve found that people are more inclined to spend their money with those they feel they have a personal connection with so why not connect them” says Patton.

That Brown Bag, is a comprehensive directory that was compiled using submissions from featured directory business owners as well as research done by the directory team. Each submission includes the business name, owner/contact person's name, address and/or phone number, along with social network handles for FB & Insta-gram and their contact E-mail, and/or business website links. The goal of the directory is to give local consumers a resource guide to find businesses owned and operated by African Americans and Hispanics in the City of Buffalo and to encourage exchange that will strengthen the black and brown dollar from which the business originated.

When asked why she’s so passionate about putting the directory together she commented, “money circulates zero-to- one time within the Black community, compared to more than six times in the Latino community, nine times in the Asian community and unlimited amount of times within the White community. With this direc-tory, my hope is to be part of the spark that changes that narrative in the community in which we live.”

“I’m so excited to be coming back,” she said during a brief interview with The Challenger. “The last time I was in Buffalo performing professionally was in 1983 with Rick and The Mary Jane Girls at the Aud!” “I’ve been all over the world, but It’s a real honor to come home and be able to perform before family and friends!”

JoJo was born and raised in Buffalo. She attended Buffalo public schools and earned her degree from Buffalo State College.

Although her career goal was to become a teacher, she

had a very real passion and talent for singing; performing regularly as a popular vocalist in area night clubs.

“Singing was a God-given gift,” she said. She trained herself by listening to records

by Aretha Franklin, Pattie LaBelle, Gladys Knight and other greats.

As a young adult she sang at her home church Mt. Ararat on Jefferson Avenue under the pastorship of the late Rev. W.L. Jones.

“He was the first person to put my voice on the radio,” she said. Before each of his weekly radio shows he would use a song she sang in the choir called “Changed.”

city Band, introduced them while she was working at Record Theatre. Rick was looking for a background singer and Oscar recommended her.

She auditioned at his Orchard Park studio. The rest is history.

“He gave me the job on the spot” she recalled. “Three months after I earned my BA degree (in Social Science) I was on the road with Rick!"

“We got along very well. The creative process was amazing with him. He was innovative in everything he did; music, vocals, the engineering…I learned invaluable lessons about recording during those times…and so much about song writing.”

JoJo was later chosen to be the lead vocalist for the 80’s R&B/pop sensation “The

Mary Jane Girls,” whose hits included “Candy Man,” “All Night Long,” and the international hit “In My House.”

She also sang backing vocals for Barry White and Anita Baker. In addition to being a premier vocalist, she is a songwriter whose credits. Include a television music composition for the hit TV show “Criminal Minds,” as well as writer and a composer of various other musical projects.

Rick, who is credited with propelling Motown into the 80’s “with rhythm, rock and attitude,” had a major falling out with the. iconic record company which led to the Mary Jane Girls’ break up.

-Still Making MusicShe said that she and Rick remained friends even after the group disbanded, but that she didn’t hear from him until 10 years later. For a brief while she admitted being somewhat disillusioned about the industry. But in 2011 she joined up with another former Stone City Band Member, saxophonist Danny LeMelle and recorded a crossover/jazz album, “Slightly Dangerous,” featuring many of the classics and showcasing her beautiful vocals.

JoJo currently resides in Los Angeles, where she is still making music, performing and song writing.

Towards the end the substance abuse was abusing him, and it got a little crazy, but I understood and there is no animosity in my heart because I saw him being destroyed by it firsthand.”

“I’m grateful and honored to be able stand next to somebody that was great and who paved the way for a lot of us…and I was one of those people.”

JoJo was inducted into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame in 1999.

“I just live here (Los Angeles)…” she was quoted as saying. “Buffalo is my home!”

Mission Ignite Seeks to Place Free Laptop Computers for Children in East Side Homes And More!

t is estimated that almost 40% of homes in Buffalo do not have a computer with regular broadband internet access. A disproportionate number of those households are black. The “digital divide,” populations with ready access to the web vs. those without, is bridged to a large degree in the younger generation by cell phones, but these devices are woefully inadequate when it comes to completing homework, job searches, and in depth consumer research.

Enter Mission Ignite, Powered by Computers For Children at 701 Seneca Street, suite 601, in the Larkinville district. With funding from a grant through KeyBank Foundation, Mission Ignite administers the School 2 Home=Key 2 Success Program for public school children. This initiative aims to place 180 desktop computers in homes on Buffalo’s East Side for free. Additionally, households with eligible 9th graders can qualify for four years of free internet access through a partnership with Sprint. Monthly access is limited to enough time to stay connected for school projects so be advised: other arrangements need to be made for hours of YouTube videos or World of Warcraft sessions.

Students and their parents attend two training sessions of three hours each to familiarize the entire family with common computer technology and usage. “Often we see a situation,” explains Executive Director Christine Carr, “where parents have grown up without technology around them, feel they did just fine, and don’t really see the need.” Including parents educates them on why it is important, introduces parents to the Buffalo Public School online portal allowing for instant viewing of your child’s grades and attendance, and demonstrates the computer’s benefit to the entire family. The sessions are held at East High School on Northampton Street as part of BPS’s Community Schools initiative and are scheduled as frequently as bi-weekly depending on how quickly they fill up.

Mission Ignite is about a lot more than just free computers though. It began 20 years ago when a few area tech men discovered companies like Blue Cross and Blue Shield, First Niagara, and Northwest Bank had stashes of unused computers due to mergers and office-wide upgrades. They began collecting and refurbishing them, and made them available at low cost to school children and non-profit agencies. Working with schools and other community partners, MI now delivers hands-on learning in coding, science experiments, software applications, even robotics and 3D modeling/ printing. Its overall mission is to enhance educational opportunities for economically challenged communities and level the technology playing field throughout the city. Today individuals can get in on the savings too and acquire these computers at a steal for between $99 and $299. They also do repair services on the cheap, starting at a one hour bench fee of $50. If your diagnosis and repair take no more than an hour, that’s all you pay.

The “Foundation For the Future” effort is an apprenticeship opportunity with Mission Ignite for middle and high school kids.

Students spend time at the Larkin Street facility involved in a variety of tasks like sorting computer parts to learn exactly what they are, how they work, taking them apart, and reassembling whole computers with them. Under the guidance of Managing Director John Brown and others, students are also exposed to entrepreneurial enterprising, critical thinking, and guidance in soft skills where shy and tech minded kids can sometimes be impaired. The ultimate aim is twofold. Kids get exposure to many areas of technology and can find their own perfect niche, while making them workforce ready for apprenticeship positions with Buffalo companies Mission Ignite has partnerships with. This program is perfect for the child who drives you nuts disassembling your toaster or radio just to see how it works. It runs after school during the school year. During the summer work immersion, some kids even get paid for their participation through 4H, My Brother’s Keeper, or the Mayor’s Summer Youth Program.

Ramod Malone is 15 and starting the 10th grade at Middle Early College High School this year. He’s been a Mission Ignite apprentice for 2 years. “The work is hard,” he says, but worthwhile in advancing him toward his chosen career in tech support. May those ongoing prayers be answered... Why can’t my legislator represent me?

By Katherine Massey Screams of anguish from family members bent over in shock and grief! Increasingly, this is the painful snapshot on the TV news (in Buffalo and many cities across the US) due to their loved ones -- infants to grandparents -- lost in the rampage of gun murders.

Evidence of the major contributing factor is obvious. It's the ultra easy access to firearms. However, methods and motions to arrest the spread of them are unsuccessful from their huge deficiency.

In Buffalo, examples are the guns-buy-back initiatives and Tip Line that many are afraid to use, since they are distrustful of confidentiality. (A better, perhaps creative way has to be provided for citizens to comfortably report helpful information to the Police Department.)

It's inconceivable major illegal gun dealers are elusive and figuratively Teflon-coated, in a country that has GPS which can track a gnat and satellites capable of listening to someone's whisper from outer space.

Also, paltry legislation mandating stricter registration and background checks for buyers of legal guns is unmindful of the flood of "illegal" guns that are raining death on our community.

An apparent necessity is the application of similar vigor, government investment of substantial funding and breath of concerted efforts in addressing the deadly issue as the opioid problem is receiving.

There isn't an unrealistic expectation for Buffalo Police Department detectives to be Columbo(s), however, the dismally small numbers of solved murders for several years (low in comparison to many cities) is unacceptable.

For years, it has not been a secret there is a shortfall of African American detectives. It's time to increase the numbers, substantially.

Their perspective and first-hand knowledge of our community, where the majority of the gun deaths are occurring, can be essential assets which need to be enlisted for solving those crimes.

I'm wondering if an increasing lack of connection to the Higher Power, especially among numbers of youth, is producing cold-hearted, individuals. Prayer was kicked out of schools and the guidance of the Ten Commandments is almost obsolete.

Mostly older adults are publicly praying for God Almighty's assistance in stopping the violence. May those ongoing prayers be answered.

COMPUTERS FOR THE EAST SIDE continued where anyone can assess the validity of iffy circulating news they may receive by social media.

Damone Hall, 17, a senior at Math Science Technology Prep has become more versed in the technology and science behind computers and how they work. More importantly, “I really learned a lot about getting along with and working with people.” He’s planning a career in computer engineering for himself.

In the spring, look for MI’s WNY Brain Challenge, a Rube Goldberg-style competition held at ECC South where teams of students get together to imagine and build comically overly engineered apparatuses. Help with transportation to Orchard Park is available.

There is a big political race going on for Erie County Judge between Debra Givens and Sue Maxwell Barnes.

As a Judge in domestic violence court, Judge Givens was/is on the frontline for women's lives. She is often the only person standing up for the victim. Thousands of women have been helped by her.

Not only does she have a proven record of fighting for women and years of experience as a judge, she's also African American and she is vying for a position desperately needing diversity. She is qualified, intelligent, fair, and she is a Black woman who is from our community. I was appalled to see that Erie County Legislator April Baskin is supporting Sue Maxwell Barnes. While Mrs. Barnes has had a great career herself, she is a White woman who does not live in our community. Sue Maxwell Barnes has been endorsed by the Amherst Democrats, and the Orchard Park Democrats, and we know they would never have endorsed a Black woman from our community like Judge Givens over someone who looks more like them. So we need to support our own qualified and dynamic candidate even if Mrs. Baskin won't. We have to support our own. Please make sure you all vote for Debra Givens for Erie County Judge!

want to thank everybody for rising up right with me this week. Let's get right into the highlights.

Buffalo Bills News On last Friday night at New Era Field, everyone who is a true Bills fan had plenty reason to "Billeve" as this Bills team showed a lot of promise. The quarterbacks were very active in making the best out of every play. The offensive line played well. We saw a lot of potential from the running back position.

The wideouts were pretty good as well.

The only cons I observed was that the wide outs have to continue running after a play breaks down. Secondly, Josh Allen needs to put more touch on his throws but Allen will be able to fix that with time and practice. Thirdly, the running backs can't get ahead of themselves as they were called for multiple false start penalties. Finally, the second and third unit on defense have to bear down more and not allow points as they were outplayed in the second half as Carolina outscored the Bills 21-6 for a 28-23 preseason win over the Bills. On the upside though, Nathan Perriman went 9/10 for 119 yards 1 touchdown and an unfortunate interception. AJ McCarron was 7/10 for 116 yards and Josh Allen went 9/19 and had 116 yards passing as well and he complemented Bills Mafia with a touchdown pass. To me, it looks like the pregame altercation between Cam Newton and Kelvin Benjamin fueled Kelvin as he caught nine passes for 54 yards and a touchdown reception from Nathan Peterman. Look forward to the next preseason game as the Bills take on former Bills QB Tyrod Taylor and the Cleveland Browns this Friday night.

Buffalo Bisons News The Buffalo Bisons recently held a superhero theme night at Cola Coca Field where many heroes came out to entertain the Herd fans. My favorite superhero has been a very distinguished and polished player by the name of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. who was called up from the Double AA baseball league and is the son of the legendary Vladimir Guerrero who played 16 seasons in the major leagues. Guerrero Jr. is nothing short of amazing and during his time as a Buffalo Bison, Guerrero Jr hit home runs in fourth consecutive games this past week. Also since joining the Herd, Guerrero Jr. has recorded 15 hits in 34 at bats in which his batting average for the Herd is an astonishing .441.

This guy has been AJ Styles phenomenal. Buffalo Bisons fans should come down to Coca Cola Field and catch Guerrero Jr. and the Herd as they have only 8 home games left in the 2018 season.

Buffalo Sabres News The summer of 2018, has truly been an icebreaker for the Buffalo Sabres. From signing the number one overall draft pick to re-constructing contract extensions for players worthy of its purpose to making trades with the Carolina Hurricanes in which the Sabres acquired Jeff Skinner this week for 3 draft picks and Cliff Pu. The Sabres look to be making moves to become a playoff team.

The Sabres will most likely need a few more pieces before accomplishing that goal and with five weeks left before the Sabres preseason home opener on September 18 against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Sabres will have time to make more moves. Will the Sabres be significantly better this season? My prediction is that the Sabres at this point will barely miss the playoffs but we shall see.

What: Emerson School of Hospitality II Where: 75 W Huron Street, Buffalo, NY 14202 The construction project includes the transformation of the existing C.W. Miller Livery Building into a new educational facility focused on the culinary and hospitality sectors operated by the Buffalo City School District. A 5,000 square foot Gymnasium Addition will also be constructed and attached to the existing structure. Work must comply with the U.S. Secretary of Interior Standards for Historic Restoration and Preservation. All contractors are to familiarize themselves with these standards.
