Youth Waiting in a Time of Crisis

O

n any given day in the United States, 123,000 youth wait in foster care to be adopted.

Waiting creates uncertainty for anyone, but for youth without a solid and supportive family foundation, there is even greater uncertainty. Many waiting youth are older teens—the majority are males of color—hoping to be adopted before they turn 18-21 years-old and “age out” of foster care without the support of a family.

Add to this challenge the latest developments in the worldwide COVID-19 health crisis. This pandemic has resulted in a major stand-still for waiting youth.

Organizations that typically place youth in adoptive homes currently cannot move youth forward into these homes. Not only is the pandemic seriously impacting our youth—causing further anxiety and fear of never having a forever home—it has stopped the forward movement process altogether.

Agencies like Children Awaiting Parents (CAP) place avail-

able youth in certified adoptive homes, providing services to the family and ensuring a successful finalization and permanent family for the youth. But in times of crisis as we are experiencing with COVID-19, there is a complete freeze on placing or moving children to another home for health and safety reasons. It impacts the waiting youth, the waiting family, and the waiting agency.

In an effort to support families and youth waiting for one another, CAP is offering virtual services for the duration of the pandemic. For families with a current placement, we are providing a complete series of services including family support sessions, youth support sessions, skill building education, trauma training sessions, case conferencing and telehealth mental health support.

For families and youth waiting to find one another, we offer certification training, virtual search-and-match, home study conferences, and support during the delay.

Feed Buffalo Food Pantry Healthy, Organic, Halal Safe Food Amidst the COVID-19 Crisis

Feed Buffalo is the City’s first organic Halal safe food pantry located at 456 Massachusetts Ave. Owner operator Drea D’Nur opened the west side location in May 2019 to heal residents with a healthy food initiative that incorporates Buffalo’s underprivileged Muslim refugee and poor Black communities.

Just a month shy since opening Feed Buffalo, D’Nur has had a successful first year developing relationships and partnerships as well as an outpouring of support from various reliable organizations and community members who have been donating an abundance of healthy organic fresh, frozen, dry and canned food as well as monetary donations allowing her to keep a steady flow of grocery items to customers in need.

“This is not a food pantry with healthy options" she said.

"Everything we have here is healthy, that’s what my mission is based on, she said….No community should be exempt from access that honors their dietary restrictions.”

With the sudden onset of the COVID-19 crisis where food desserts and those less fortunate are even more compromised, D’Nur wasted no time focusing her attention on the immediate needs of those impacted. She even created curb side service for those unable to get transportation to pick up from the pantry, practicing the suggested social distancing of the time.

“COVID-19 is real, and I’m so grateful for those who have reached out to support Feed Buffalo with the type of foods we desire to provide, delivery service by way of car, bike messengers so that we can continue to safely support others especially those who are unable or are fearful to leave their homes. She continued: "At minimum it’s been five to seven families per day we have fed, even had students who don’t have food and plenty of people who are practicing organic lifestyles in need.”

With the COVID-19 school shutdown until further notice D’Nur has to homeschool five children in between finding ways to supplement her own income as she is no different from any other creative artist and non-profit operator impacted by the current crisis. She recently raised funds for her family with a virtual healing concert on her birthday where a portion of the proceeds will go to Feed Buffalo.

She definitely has her hands full but her heart overflows with love and sense of community that keep her and the pantry going strong.

"Community is like a big family, said D'NurWe shouldn’t need a religious epiphany to convince us to feed people healthy food. We actually aren’t doing anything so grand. Feed Buffalo is fulfilling a very basic human right- the right to access healthy

food.”

rom the initial spread of disinformation that Black people could not get the coronavirus (C0VID-19), to the sobering reality that Blacks are indeed catching the virus and dying from it across the country– should be a wake up call for all of us.

The numbers continue to rise. As of March 31 there were 499 confirmed positive cases of the virus in Erie County and 8 coronavirus related deaths. The tragic passing of 44-year-old Louvenia “Lou Lou” Henderson last week; the hospitalization of one of the community’s most beloved and respected police officers; and news that Council President Darius Pridgen has tested positive for coronavirus brings it closer to home.

Council President Pridgen went public with his status to warn the community to follow safety guidelines and protect themselves. His son Craig is currently recovering at home after being hospitalzed for the virus as well.

Pridgen announced on Facebook that he planned to share his experience with daily updates.

“The person who is coughing is not the biggest threat because you can tell,” said Pridgen. “It’s the one who is not coughing. It’s the one who is walking around.

There are so many people out there who have it and don’t know it. This is the point. They look healthy, they look strong, but they don’t know.”

Council President Pridgen plans to lead the "virtual" council meetings on Tuesdays on the Common Council's Facebook page.

•COVID-19 deaths in New York State has grown beyond 1,200. There have been

1,218 deaths in the state, up from 965 deaths as of midday Sunday, the governor said.

istrict Elder Reginald E. Kerr is the Senior Pastor of the Temple of Christ Church, Inc., where he serves along with his wife, First Lady Sarah L. Kerr. The church is located at 1230 Genesee Street in Buffalo.

The Temple of Christ Church was founded on November 15, 2005, in the home of Pastor and First Lady Kerr at 167 Roosevelt Avenue. The church began with a small group that met weekly. After several weeks the group began to grow and needed a larger place to worship. By the grace of God,

the church moved to 2275 Fillmore Avenue in November of 2005. At that time s e r v i c e s Pastor & First Lady Kerr were being held upstairs, over the Alive Christian Book Store. It was there that Elder Reginald E. Kerr was installed as the Senior Pastor of the church, by the Apostle Robert L. Sanders, Sr. The Temple of Christ Church began to grow and prosper with the blessings

of Apostle Robert Sanders of The Greater Refuge Temple of Christ. After a year of faithfulness, the church received its Charter under "The Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith."

As the Lord's blessings continued to flow, the Temple of Christ Church was able to purchase a building located at 1230 Genesee Street where they are currently located.

10 Old School Tips For Caretakers Of Quarantined Persons

f you or a family member have ever been told to quarantine at home, its more to it than simply being isolated, especially if there are others in your home.

Whether you live with a spouse, significant other, small children or even in-laws, COVID-19 poses a threat to your family's health. Ensuring their safety and your own, is the single-most important thing in our lives today. Here are a few old-school methods our grandparents used whenever someone was sick with something contagious that will work great for COVID-19 quarantined patients.

HANDWASHING - Handwashing with soapy water thoroughly and frequently for at least 20 seconds, is the single most important thing you can do remain COVID-19 free.

Always remember to scrub the backs of both hands and your thumbs!

FREQUENT HANDWASHING and STAYING AT LEAST 6 FEET FROM OTHERS MINIMIZES COVID-19 VIRUS TRANSMISSION Isolate the Infected Person - Absolutely no visitors. They should only leave the area to use the bathroom. Husbands and wives - one in the bed, the other in the spare bedroom or on the couch please!

1. Make sure to clean and sanitize the bathroom after every use to prevent contamination or infection of others in the household.

2. Add a capful of bleach to dishwater when handwashing dishes. Automatic dishwashers use hot steam to sanitize.

3. Wash the clothes and linen of the isolated person separately.

4. Whenever possible, use paper plates, disposable cups and cutlery. Use gloves when giving or receiving anything from the isolation room. It should all go straight to the trash or be sanitized.

Make sure the isolated person is warm and comfortable - cell phone, charger, clean linen, snacks, cough drops, music, movies, books and plenty of TLC (tender, loving care), etc.

1. Keep children and seniors away from the isolation room. They can Face Time or Skype.

2. Make sure the person in isolation has access to a thermometer and track their temp several times per day. This info should be kept in a log and available to medical personnel should the patient's condition worsen.

Keep the patient hydrated!

1. Water, orange juice and hot tea with lemon, honey, and a dash of Black Pepper will help keep mucus from forming.

Maintain whatever diet is tolerable for them but especially keep those fluids coming!

If temperature spikes, coughing becomes worse or patient becomes extremely fatigued, call their primary care doctor. If they experience tightening in their chest or have difficulty breathing, go to the nearest emergency room.

Caretakers who follow this quarantine regimen will help significantly reduce opportunity for a person with COVID-19 to transmit it to others in the house while under orders of quarantine.

African American Health Equity Task Force Calls for Immediate Action to Address COVID-19 Impact on County's African American Population

T

he African American Health Equity Task Force is calling for public health leaders and elected officials to invest resources in the most vulnerable communities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The announcement was made by Task Force co-conveners Pastor George Nicholas, MDiv, Senior Pastor, Lincoln Memorial United Methodist, and Kinzer M. Pointer, MCM, Pastor, Agape Fellowship Baptist Church.

They released the following statement: “People with heart disease, lung disease such as asthma, and underlying illnesses including diabetes are at high risk for serious disease from COVID-19. African American residents of Erie County have nearly five times the rate of asthma compared to White residents; 50% higher rate of hospitalizations for heart disease; and 250% higher rate of hospitalization for diabetes compared to Whites.

“Thus, investing in regions like the East Side of Buffalo, a predominantly African American community, is investing in populations that are most vulnerable to serious COVID-19 disease and most likely to need hospitalization. This approach will benefit our entire community.

In order to accomplish response and prevention goals, the African American Health Equity Task Force is calling for: •The development of an action plan to provide testing for COVID-19 in accessible locations within the African American community, i.e. local vacant schools that are spacious and located within the neighborhood . “So few tests for COVID-19 infection have been performed on East Side residents that there is little or no data upon which to rely to make strategic investments. Erie County has the lowest rate of COVID-19 tests performed per capita of all urban counties in the state and only a proportion of these tests have been performed on

In the African American community fewer than one in five Black Americans are able to work from home. This means Black Buffalonians are at higher risk for contracting coronavirus and are likely faced with a choice to risk infection for a paycheck or protect their families and go without pay or even lose their jobs.

The Task Force urges personal protective equipment be provided for frontline workers in health care and other businesses that have contact with high numbers of people as well as increase COVID-19 testing for health care workers and frontline workers. They are also urging businesses and hospitals to pay all workers required to work at this time hazard pay of at least $15 per hour.

“We want to make sure that a community that has been historically overlooked does not get left out during this very serious crisis,” added Pastor Pointer.
