ROCHESTER PERMANENTLY DESIGNATES INDIGENOUS PEOPLES’ DAY

A Rochester Police Department investigator parked his car in the ambulance bay at Strong Memorial Hospital. A Black female EMT hit the cop’s door while unloading a patient. The investigator insisted on ID. The EMT insisted on bringing the patient inside. In footage from inside the hospital the officer entered the hospital and approached the EMT, who was working with a patient on a gurney in the bay. The officer walked in, placed both hands behind the EMT's back, and put on the handcuffs. The officer then led the EMT out of the hospital while holding onto the EMT's handcuffs. The EMT was removed from the handcuffs after a supervisor arrived and did not face any charges. He’s been placed on desk duty. An internal investigation was ordered.

Following are excerpts from a commentary by Rochester columnist Howard Eagle in reference to the incident.

The Rochester City Council has unanimously voted to permanently recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day in the City of Rochester on each second Monday in October. The legislation changes Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples’ Day. In 2022, Indigenous Peoples’ Day will be officially celebrated on October 10th in the City of Rochester and City offices will be officially closed.

ochester, NY is back in national news again, and the central issue is not merely a matter of one, single, out-ofcontrol, White, Rochester Police Department (RPD) officer manhandling a Black, EMT ambulance worker (while she was in the process of attending to a patient at Rochester's most prestigious hospital Strong Memorial Hospital ).

It's much deeper than that. More than likely, the real, central issue and problem is long standing, ongoing, individual and institutional racism. How do we know this? We know by virtue of the historical record, which (to paraphrase the late, great, grassroots scholar, Malik El Shabazz), "is best qualified to reward our research."

No doubt, some will argue, there's no proof that the attack of the Black female EMT worker by a White male cop has anything to do with race or racism. Some will even attempt to label the mention of it as representing the silly notion of so-called "playing the race card," and will have the audacity to demand proof - 'riddle me this: when is the last time you witnessed a White, male RPD member attack a White woman ambulance worker or otherwise ? Now, ask yourself the same question regarding Black females. At least several outstanding situations should come to mind immediately. We remember Brenda Hardaway, right? How can we forget the punch squarely to the side of her head, and being slammed to the ground (during pregnancy)? How about the Black Howard woman that an RPD officer pepper-sprayed and tackled to the ground in EAGLE front of her 3-year old child last year? We remember the 10 year old Black girl that RPD handcuffed during a routine traffic stop in 2020, right? And how could we ever forget the 9-year-old girl that RPD handcuffed and pepper sprayed last year, and told her, "you did it to yourself"? Surely there have been others. I'll wait for the White list.

Of course some have attempted to portray the most recent attack as an isolated incident. Even the ambulance company for which the attacked Black woman works, attempted to portray it as such. They issued a half-hearted, milk-toast statement of "support" for the Black employee, but still maintained in part that: "We would, however, appreciate resisting derogatory comments against RPD as an organization. This incident was perpetrated by a single individual and subject to investigation by his employer, everyone is entitled to due process regardless of opinion. " The unadulterated truth of the matter is that clearly this is not an isolated incident at all. These types of actions on the part of RPD have happened to Black folks, over and over again, literally for decades. Congratulations Superintendent Williams!

Last Thursday, July 14, the Board of Education skipped the traditional national search and instead voted unanimously to appoint Dr. Tonja M. Williams to Superintendent of Buffalo Public Schools. She was sworn in before a packed crowd of family, friends, colleagues, well wishers and community leaders who gathered in the Council Chambers to show their support.

Dr. Williams “hit the ground running’” after being named to the interim position in March following the resignation of Dr. Kriner Cash; impressing the board with her work ethic and show of concern for Buffalo Public School students and her engagement with the community.

In April the Common Council approved a resolution urging the school board to make selecting a local candidate like Dr. Williams, a priority.

Many see her experience working for the school system for 32 years as a plus. She has served in a variety of rolls, starting out as a counselor and rising through the ranks to include principal and administrative positions. Perhaps the most attractive thing about her serving as head of the Buffalo Schools is the fact that Dr. Williams herself is a Buffalo native. She is a graduate of Riverside High School and grew up on the East side. She, as well as her supporters, feel that her keen understanding of the district will be a plus in this demanding role. It is a district in need of change and faces many challenges.

Dr. Williams thanked her family and supporters. She is the mother of two, yet considers all 31,000 Buffalo Public School children her “other children” as well.

She made it clear that she was up to the task, and urged naysayers to “...stand to the side as we get to the business of moving this district forward.”

wo months to the day that the massacre took place at the tops Market on Jefferson Avenue in the heart of Buffalo’s Black community, resulting in the tragic deaths of 10 innocent Black men and women at the hands of a White supremacist, the new, redesigned store re-opened.

The improved changes are noticeable, from a new sales floor layout and LED lighting ,to 25% more fresh produce space, an expanded fresh organic foods section and an emphasis on promoting products from Black owned businesses including Sadie’s Relish, Boss Sauce, Sylvia’s , Neilly’s Rice Mixs and Skin Care Essentials by Jill and more.

The security system, has been enhanced; lighting in the parking lot, upgraded; additional exits within the store and additional security staff.

Seventy five percent of the store’s employees have reportedly chosen to come back to work at the store.

The memorial "water wall" tribute to the victims of the May 14th shooting was tastefully created, consisting of a large waterfall as a backdrop to an iconic poem by the city’s talented and visionary young Poet Laureate, Jillian Hanesworth (see page 11) . Culturally enriching and relevant are the African Adinkra symbols that adorn the outside and entrance to the store and an Urban Street Art Exhibition near the market.

Jillian was a guest on WBFO last week where she expressed her feelings about the Tops opening and her poem.

“Everything’s new and everything’s shiny…but we know what happened …we know what it took to look this way” she said.

She expressed the hope that all who read her poem will be comforted.

“I want them to feel a sense of healing…I wrote this poem at Broderick Park…the last stop before (enslaved) Black people crossed over to Canada…when I was writing this I was thinking about that and how much life is actually in water and how water has been such a significant symbol of transition for Black and Brown people…so I want people to feel healing… to be able to look at it and kind of breathe a little bit…as a community we need time to just breathe you know?”

-The Conversation ContinuesCouncil Member Bishop Darius Pridgen acknowledged the “mixed emotions" around the reopening of the store during a prayer at the dedication.

Such emotions were ironically fueled, for example, by the decision to bar the public from taking part in the memorial service ahead of the July 15 opening on Thursday.

A fenced in parking lot kept out disappointed neighbors who had gathered there. One woman remarked that it was hurtful because as community residents they were not allowed to participate.

Community activist Cariole Horne held a sign which read: “You want us to shop here yet you have a gate keeping us out now.”

Organizers of the event said it was all done in the interest of security.

There have been several demonstrators at the site expressing issues from believing the store reopened too soon to one store simply not being enough in the community, “The media has slanted this as a community divided, us against them. We want the same things ,” Jerome Wright told Spectrum News.. And despite the variation of emotions in the wake of an extremely traumatic and devastating event, he assured “ This community is agreeable about one thing, that one store is not enough, has never been enough and the tragedy has exposed…and exacerbated the concerns of our community.”

Protestors were also protesting abandoned properties and empty lots they said should be home for new establishments – and that if local officials are not making it happen they will.

“Community Meetings where residents can envision possibilities together,” is the next step he said.

As activists they plan to take action for more options.

Who Were The Moors? hen the topic of the W Moorish influence in Europe is being discussed,

one of the first questions that arise is, what race were they?

Author and historian Chancellor Williams said “the original Moors, like the original Egyptians, were Black Africans.”

The 16th century English playwright William Shakespeare used the word Moor as a synonym for African.

His contemporary Christopher Marlowe also used African and Moor interchangeably.

Arab writers further buttress the Black identity of the Moors. The powerful Moorish Emperor Yusuf ben-Tachfin is described by an Arab chronicler as “a brown man with wooly hair.”

Black soldiers, specifically identified as Moors, were actively recruited by Rome, and served in Britain, France, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Poland, and Romania. St. Maurice, patron saint of medieval Europe, was only one of many black soldiers and officers under the employ of the Roman Empire.

Although generations of Universal Education The Moors brought enormous learning to Spain that over centuries would percolate through the rest of Europe.

Gary entered into rest July 11, 2022. He is the beloved son of the late Mathew and Sarah King; loving brother of ten; predeceased by five. He is survived by a host of nieces nephews, family and friends. Early in his career Gary was a beloved supporter and friend to The Challenger. Our deepest and most heartfelt condolences.

he law firm John V. Elmore, P.C., is sponsoring “It’s a Family Affair,” an event in remembrance of Shaquelle “Quelle” Walker Jr. The family-friendly event on July 23 honors Walker, who, along with three others, was shot on July 5, 2021; he died of his injuries a few days later. Walker’s death is yet another tragic example of the danger posed by gun violence.

Walker, who was 3 years old, was riding his bicycle at the time of the shooting. He and his family had been enjoying a late-night cookout at the Ferry Grider Homes apartment complex and watching a display of fireworks.

“It’s a Family Affair” will take place July 23 at Ferry Grider Homes, 967 East Ferry Street, from 1 to 4 p.m. The family fun day will include food, non-alcoholic beverages, as well as free haircuts for children, provided by Urban Cuts Barber Shop. Those who attend can enjoy DJ-provided music, face painting, a bounce house, a sports card trading table, and a giveaway of clothing and books. In addition, mental health services will be provided by the Buffalo Urban League’s Self-Motivation Parents; free tablets will be offered to those who qualify; and education will be offered on the dangers of prescription and non-prescription drugs.

“We have a lot of problems in the Buffalo minority communities,” said John V. Elmore, Esq. “It imperative for not only our elected officials and community activists to fight to create change, but also our business leaders. My daughter and I are pleased to play a role in honoring the memory of an innocent child whose life was stolen by senseless gun violence.”

27th Annual Pappy Martin Legacy - Masten Jazz Festival "Celebrating Women in Jazz" at MLK Park

or the Next two Sundays in July one of the most revered Jazz events in the community will grace the lawn at MLK Park. The 27th annual Pappy Martin Legacy Masten Jazz Festival kicks off this Sunday July 24 followed by Sunday July 31 .

A well visited festival, folks from near and far eagerly arrive the wide lawn at the park with their chairs for some serious Jazz fellowship and a healthy dose of what’s new now and next in Jazz Music.

The event is curated by Buffalo’s First Lady of Jazz, Dawn Martin Berry Walker, daughter of the late legend James Pappy Martin who founded the event back in 1996 in collaborated with Councilmember Byron Brown, Darryl Peebles, Council President James Pitts and Steve Porter.

The purpose/goal was to implement an innovative community enhancement program entitled Masten Jazz Festival. His beloved daughter continues his legacy of presenting local, national and international artists to perform on the grand stage positioned on the side lawn of the Buffalo Museum of Science in MLK park. “My father, Pappy, built a legacy of offering this free festival so that the best of this music, called jazz, would be accessible to everyone in the community… We uphold his commitment by immortalizing his vision. He left us a great template and solid reputation for producing wonderful festivals, year after year,” Said Dawn.

This years theme, “Celebrating Women in Jazz ,”will showcase the dynamic artistry of both the seasoned and emerging artists.

There are some outstanding instrumental and vocal parings headlining the festival including Bassist, composer and festival favorite Curtis Lundy, best known for his work as part of jazz vocalist Betty Carter’s band who is also the Pappy Martin Legacy Jazz Collective’s International Music Director with the savvy vocal grandeur of Brianna Thomas who has an Ella-esque skill and enthusiasm for scatting.

The Baylor Project brings a sound steeped in the heart and soul of jazz. It is made up of husband and wife team Marcus Baylor, former drummer of the GRAMMY® Award-winning jazz quartet Yellowjackets, and his wife Jean Baylor, heavily influenced by artists like Carmen McRae, who made her mark as one-half of the platinum recording duo, Zhane.

Endea Owens & The Cookout led by Julliard graduate Endea Owens, one of the most watched emerging bassists, has been mentored by greats like Rodney Whitaker and Ron Carter.

RACIST ROBOTS!?

It turns out, robots can actually be racist if they are trained with certain artificial intelligence software.

The results of a new study are thought to be the first to demonstrate that robots programmed with an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm exhibited gender and racial biases — favoring men over women, white people over people of color and making assumptions about people’s jobs based solely on their appearance, according to reports by Hub, the news center of Johns Hopkins University, and The Washington Post.

“The robot has learned toxic stereotypes through these flawed neural network models,” said author Andrew Hundt, a postdoctoral fellow at Georgia Tech who co-conducted the work as a PhD student working in Johns Hopkins’ Computational Interaction and Robotics Laboratory.

Report: Blacks are Still Killed at Higher Rate

by Police Than any Other Group New data reported in March showed the number of Black people killed by police has actually increased over the last two years.

According to data collected by The Washington Post, police shot and killed at least 1,055 people nationwide last year, the most since the newspaper began tracking fatal shootings by officers in 2015. That is more than the 1,021 shootings in 2020 and the 999 in 2019.

Black people, who account for 13 percent of the U.S. population, accounted for 27 percent of those fatally shot and killed by police in 2021, according to Mapping Police Violence, a nonprofit group that tracks police shootings.

TOPS: Reflections on the Reopening

For some in the community, the opening is bittersweet.

There remains a void that needs to be filled with respect to options for shopping for essentials in a densely populated urban market. Like so many Black communities, the options are limited, and without the Jefferson Avenue Tops, virtually non-existent.

There are those in the community who believe that the loss is too great to even visit the idea of opening the doors to the public. When you speak with the survivors, many give a more practical account, one that reflects Tops as a corporation, and how they’re decision making comes down to dollars and cents.

Dayatra Amber Hassan, however, is clear when she states: "We need food sovereignty.” She explains that we are not only struggling with access to good food, but we also struggle with information. Dayatra didn’t go into Tops on July 15th, their opening day that was eerily close to the two-month anniversary of the racist terror attack that took place there. Dayatra feels like there wasn’t any community input on whether Tops should re-open, and she says there was no community outreach that she’s aware of and the community was left unheard.

The employee ceremony and the press conference were both held that Thursday before the opening. Tops did a lot to work with their employees to build their confidence ahead of their scheduled opening. They met regularly with their employees at the library on Jefferson, and they shared stories about other parties and gathering they had ahead of the Tops opening. The ceremony and press conference were hosted by the all-White corporate team, but the family atmosphere that exists amongst the employees of the store shined through the tensity of the situation. They cheered for one another as they filed in to take their seats, and they expressed love and gratitude for many of their leaders and co-workers.

According to Tops, they expect over 75% of their employees to return to the store. Among those included is Brooklyn Hough, who was working at Tops on May 14th. Brooklyn wasn’t at the ceremony on May 14th, and according to her, she

hasn’t returned to the store since the terror attack took place. In her account, Tops stopped paying their employees a week before the store opened and she was faced with the option to either struggle or return to work at a different Tops location. She attempted to return to work, and as a mother of two who used to enjoy the small freedom of work, she couldn’t handle the anxiety and has ultimately made the decision to leave Tops to focus on her health and healing.

The Jefferson Avenue Tops store underwent a facelift prior to opening their doors back to the community. The produce department was expanded by 25%, they made upgrades to their self-checkout area, and upgrades were made to the flooring and overall aesthetic of the building. Local poet Jillian Hanesworth worked with Tops to develop a memorial for the tragic attack, featured in the front of the store before the exit. The corporate leaders talked about the enhanced security system, upgraded lighting in the parking lot, additional exits within the store and additional security that will be staffed at the Jefferson Ave location.

Ultimately Tops reopening is one that leaves the community at varying levels. Some looking to rebuild with a sense of strength and resilience, while others unready to deal with the hurt that was left there.

While Tops is officially open, the corporation has not refunded the transactions from May 14th and many survivors are still left to struggle.

The accounts are numerous of people not being able to return to work, go grocery shopping and many unable to leave their home still months after the attack. Workers’ compensation and victim services have not kicked in for people like Brooklyn, while the corporation is pushing to return to normal.

Embarrassed...

On May 14 Tops Market on Jefferson Avenue was the scene of a mass shooting where 10 innocent people were murdered at the hands of a White supremacist, another three wounded and countless others still in trauma.

The reopening took place last Friday to mixed emotions: some feeling it was too soon after the massacre, while others welcoming the newly designed Tops – still the only full scaled supermarket we have in the community.

And that’s a very real issue. What options do the people on the East Side of Buffalo have? Are there any other major markets willing to financially invest its resources in the east side? Have any of our elected leaders reached out to other grocers to fill the gap?

Days before the re-opening of Tops, I found it very amusing that on the corner of Jefferson and East Utica, where the Library is located, there is now a flower bed in front. And at the parking lot on Jefferson where the Family Dollar is located, the once cracked lot full of pot holes for years , had been paved just it time for the press conference announcing the re-opening of the Tops Market. The grass was cut and the bushes were neatly trimmed. These are all the signs of an EMBARRASSED city. Truth. When the cameras came rolling in, the WORLD saw the conditions under which Buffalo’s East Side residents were living ; a direct result of elected officials who FAILED to serve them.

From my observation, many of our Black leaders were absent during the chaos, while some paraded themselves in front of the cameras and never really addressed the people affected.

Many of the Black Clergy were also absent during all the chaos.

Hats off to the handful who were out there daily. There was a decent turnout present when Rev. Al Sharpton came in town to speak. But Sharpton actually called out what he saw as hypocrisy in the pulpit.

Again all these are signs of an embarrassed city where it’s all about “profit over the people”: i.e. a stadium over the people.

My beloved people I urge you to look at your elected officials, the ones that you voted for, and ask yourself if they deserved your vote.

The President and the Vice President of the United States both came to Buffalo. The routes that took them to see the funerals and the memorials, gave both elected officials and out of town dignitaries the chance to see how depressed the community looks.They saw the dilapidated buildings and the vacant fields. East side residents DEMAND MORE. We deserve more.

Sadly it took the deaths of ten innocent people to get the little we’re getting right now. Elections are coming. People, we must demand more or vote them OUT. And finally, we should have term limits for the office of the mayor and definitely the common council! I'm jus sayin...

Additionally, I am always baffled by the deafening silence of most so-called anti-racist activists, educators, and "allies" when these kinds of situations arise, Lastly, the recent case is very, important. It represents the perfect test case regarding the (finally operative) Rochester Police Accountability Board's seriousness, and/or capability to hold the Rochester Police Department accountable for potentially illegal, and definitely inappropriate misbehavior.

Let's Talk About Jefferson Avenue! POETRY The Jefferson Avenue Tops Supermarket has reopened but it is not a slam dunk by any means as many residents have mixed feelings about it reopening so soon at the location where ten members from our community were slaughtered.

There are those who are happy to see it reopen, and others who feel the community was not involved in the decision when or even whether or not, the supermarket should reopen at that exact location. Still others feel that nothing short of a permanent memorial should be built on that sacred and holy ground.

With the supermarket's reopening ceremony last Friday, it seems that the issue has been settled. That may be so, but protests against the store reopening so soon after the massacre are steadily growing.

We Are Women Warriors believe that conversations with the community about how the city can improve the areas around the store can be more productive than continuing to protest the reopening of a supermarket already opened for business. A more positive move would be for the city and the community that was left out of the discussion about when the store should reopen, to begin the conversation about what can be done to improve and redevelop lots and buildings on Jefferson Avenue that have been abandoned or neglected for years. Conversations about what kind of businesses should be located on the Jefferson Avenue commercial strip need to be held now since Gov. Kathy Hochul has designated a ton of money for the area . A conversation about the terrible condition of the street and missing or crumbling curbs needs to be held, as well.

We Are Women Warriors will host its next 'No Excuses' Community Forum to give residents a chance to give input on what types of economic development is needed on Jefferson to make it viable to all residents, including those who say they will never again shop at the supermarket. Speakers will have up to 5 minutes during the 3-hour meeting to articulate how we can make Jefferson Ave, the restored economic ' heart and soul' of the Black community that it used to be, decades ago.

The community forum will be held Thursday, July 28, from 5-8 PM,at the Frank E. Merriweather Library, 1324 Jefferson Ave. Speakers may sign up in advance by calling 716-6025877. Elected officials, city planners, developers and potential business owners are encouraged to attend.

Trailblazer Sign Dedication Ceremony for Kat Massey

We Are Women Warriors, Ellicott District Councilmember Darius G. Pridgen, Pastor Frank Bostic of Pilgrim Baptist Church, and the Family of the late Ms. Katherine 'Kat' Massey, will be participating in a City of Buffalo Trailblazer Sign Dedication Ceremony in Kat's honor, at the park located at the intersection of Cherry Street and Jefferson Avenue, on Friday, July 29 at 1pm. Katherine 'Kat' Massey grew up, and was raised, in the house she was living in before she was murdered in the racist, white supremacist attack at Tops Supermarket, on Saturday, May 14th. Kat was instrumental in getting New York State to incorporate the African Adinkra Symbols that adorn the concrete wall, that separates the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Expressway, from the homes that line Cherry Street These cultural symbols can now be seen on the windows of the Jefferson Avenue TOPS Supermarket, where Kat made her heavenly transition.

Kat helped organized the Cherry Street Block Club, and during the 1990s, she worked closely with the legendary Ms. Althea Ware, and the Friendly Fruit Belt Block Club Coalition, to help improve the quality-of-life available to residents of the Fruibelt Neighborhood. The Trailblazer Signs honoring Ms. Katherine 'Kat' Massey, will designate Cherry St., from Mortimer Street, to Jefferson Avenue, as "Katherine 'Kat' Massey Way". The ceremony will start promptly, at 1pm.

As we celebrated the Juneteenth holiday, signifying the freedom of Black Americans from enslavement, there's one person that is still waiting on his freedom or a chance at an evidentiary hearing that would bring freedom one day closer. That man is Jonathan Parker, who is still waiting on Judge James Bargnesi to render his decision as to whether Jonathan can have that hearing.

Judge Bargnesi is sitting on the case and has been seen as unfavorable by his peers. During his unopposed run for the Eighth Judicial District in 2015 the Erie County Bar Association said they did not recommend Bargnesi for the position. He appealed the rating and the decision still came back as not recommended.

Former state Attorney General Dennis C. Vacco told Buffalo News at the time “It's hard to fathom that a person with 18 years in District Attorney's Office should not be recommended for a position in a court that deals primarily with criminal law.” At around the same time that DA Flynn was soon to take over the office after previous Frank Sedeita III was moving to the bench as well.

During Bargnesi’s time as an assistant district attorney he worked on another case, Josue Ortiz, where he continued to insist that Oritz was guilty even after police and the FBI said he was wrongfully convicted. Ortiz stayed in prison for an additional 3 years until DNA exonerated him.

Jonathan needs justice and the system continues to conspire against him. Even after false witness accounts and several going as far as to recant their statements, he remains waiting for that day. Over the last decade alone there have been exonerated and vindicated individuals that have had their cases heard in Erie County. The number of cases that resemble Jonathan stands at 10, but there are so many more cases out there that need that one person to actually hear them.

The family of Jonathan Parker is hoping that day will come as soon as the court hears him out. Just like James Bargnesi needed someone to hear him and believe he can deliver justice fairly. In a few weeks we hope that Judge Bargnesi will deliver Justice by letting the city hear the truth and witness what true Justice looks like.
