The school year started a vibrant new era for East High School with the University of Rochester serving as the Educational Partnership Organization (EPO) overseeing the school.

On August 27, the Rochester Board of Education voted to appoint Shaun Nelms, EdD, to serve as the Educational Partnership Organization (EPO) superintendent at East. He assumed East’s top leadership position on Sept. 1.

Nelms has served as the deputy superintendent since February, following New York State Education Department approval for the educational partnership with the University of Rochester to ensure the success of East and its students. As deputy superintendent, Nelms has overseen the hiring of staff and the dayto-day operations of the East EPO plan. He will succeed Stephen Uebbing, EdD, who will remain as the University’s project director for the Shaun Nelms, EdD East EPO. “Shaun is the perfect person to lead East,” said Uebbing.

“His background, experiences, and personal story all make him ideally suited to be the permanent superintendent of the East EPO. Given Shaun’s skills and credentials, he could have been a legitimate candidate for any position in the State, but his deep commitment to social justice and understanding of urban education made the East EPO a compelling choice for him. I could not imagine a better and more capable individual to lead this work.”

Dean Kinman has been on the front lines of what has been happening in Ferguson since the homicide of Michael Brown in 2014. He has also been a leader in and supporter of the #BlackLivesMatter movement that emerged from Ferguson and that has spread across the nation, indeed the world, this past year.

His schedule will include a 10 a.m. multi-faith conversation with WNY clergy where Mike will share what motivated members of the congregation of Christ Church Cathedral and him to get involved in Ferguson and what continues to keep him in a leadership role. He also wants to hear from clergy about issues of concern in our community in hopes of mutual learning.

Aloma D. Johnson Charter to Participate in 5th Annual Million Fathers Celebration This event is held every year (in 600 participating cities nationwide) to emphasize the importance of male figures in the lives of children and their education.

Marcus Garvey Back to School Readiness Project Plans to Expand T

he Marcus Garvey Back to School Readiness project has just concluded its third successful summer session and is looking to expand the program.

The Project, which ran August 10-28 was held at the Juneteenth of Buffalo headquarters at 1517 Genesee Street for children in grades 3-12. Its focus was on the power of the spoken word, study skills /construction, reading and comprehension, writing/penmanship, power of music/drums and the visionary mission of activist and Pan-Africanist Marcus Garvey.

Jomo Akono, of Project Access to A Free Ka, one of the Project’s partners, said that the program plans to continue with cultural and educational enrichment sessions throughout the year for children during the holiday breaks and special school days off.

Another one of the Back to School Readiness Project partners, Kaleidoscope Competitions, is taking a team of students to Orlando, Florida at the end of the month to compete in the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) Annual Science Fair and Science Bowl. The event, which attracts students from all over, is held annually at the end of the organization’s annual conference, now in its 42nd year.

ora P. Maloney was the first African American woman elected Masten District representative to the Buffalo Common Council. There is a College at the University of Buffalo named after this pioneering Black woman.

Cora Pleasant Maloney was born in Kansas City, Missouri, circa 1905. She was a graduate of the University of Kansas, School of Pharmacy.

She worked as a pharmacist and medical technologist . She met her husband, Clarence, an assistant attorney general in Albany, New York. They were married in 1945 and moved to Buffalo shortly afterward.

Mrs. Maloney had been active in Kansas Democratic politics before moving to Buffalo and becoming involved in the Democratic Party in this city.

In 1957, she was sworn in as a committeewoman in the Sixth District of the 13th ward.

She made history, when in the same year; she was elected as Buffalo’s first Councilwoman, the first Democrat ever to be elected in the Masten District, and the first African American to be elected in the district in twenty years. She did not have the party endorsement for her first election. She was re-elected in 1959. That same year she refused to attend the U.S. Conference of Mayors in New Orleans. While a Loud Mouth Runs in America, A Comedian Leads in Guatemala

Lawyer for CuomoCritically Wounded in Shooting Carey Gabay, 43, a lawyer advising the administration of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo was clinging to life after a gunman fired several shots into a crowd gathered early Monday morning before the start of the West Indian Day Parade in New York City.

According to the New York Daily News, Gabay was shot in the head as he and his brother were attempting to take cover. Police told the Daily News that they do not believe Gabay or his brother were the gunman’s intended targets.

“He was caught in gunfire that he had nothing to do with.

And there is nothing we can do, nothing the doctors can do, but pray,” the governor told the Daily News after visiting Gabay in the hospital. “It is a personal, painful reminder of gun violence. And it has to stop. It just has to stop.

“I was just with the family, and the tears and the frustration. And I’m governor of the state of New York, and there’s nothing I can say. And there’s nothing I can do. And sometimes it just hurts,” Cuomo said.

Police told the Daily News that they believe they have found the gun used in the shooting but added that the gunman was still at large.

Cuomo told the newspaper that Gabay was an example of a true American story having worked his way out of the projects to attend Harvard.

His wife, Trenelle Gabay, is pregnant with their first child.

“He was a good guy. He just didn’t deserve this,” Carey Gabay’s brother Aaron McNaughton, 32, told the Daily News between tears.

“If you asked for the shirt off his back he’d give you the shoes on his feet,” he said.

Jimmy Morales, a TV comedian with name recognition but no political experience, emerged out of nowhere to move up in the polls as the political crisis deepened over the summer. The latest account gives him almost 24 percent of the vote. Mr. Morales and the candidate receiving the next highest number of votes will head to a runoff in October. No joke.

Some Residents of Puerto Rico Are Seeking to Break From U.S and Re-Join Spain SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, – As Puerto Rico staggers under the burden of US$72 billion of public debt and double-digit unemployment, a novel way of handling its economic woes may be gaining ground: Break off from the United States and re-join Spain.

The Reunification of Puerto Rico with Spain movement, founded in 2013 by 43-yearold Jose Nieves Seise, is based on a blend of nostalgia, frustration and alternative history, with Nieves Seise pointing to what he calls a “flawed depiction” of Puerto Rico as a colony of Spain.

“In reality it was an integral part of Spain. The US invaded us in 1898 and they separated us against our will,” he insisted.

The split was superficial, he added, highlighting the similarities that endure between Spain and Puerto Rico to this day.

“Puerto Ricans love the Spanish people; we’re Spanish. We want to return to the country to which we belong,” he said.

Nieves Seise’s strategy for solving his country’s problems relies on successfully contesting the 1898 Treaty of Paris, which laid out the framework for the island to change from Spanish to American hands.

Global Summit to Address Root Causes of the Attack on Black Lives

n Afro-European delegation, the leader of the Caribbean reparations movement, Black Lives Matter activists, and members of the Pan African Congress and the African Union will highlight Valuing Black Lives: The First Annual Global Emotional Emancipation Summit to be presented

by Community Healing Network (CHN) and the Association of Black Psychologists (ABPsi) on September 17 and 18, 2015.

The Honorable Karen Bass (D-Ca.), Ranking Member of the U.S. House of Representatives Africa Subcommittee, is hosting the Summit as part of the 45th Annual Legislative Conference of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation in Washington D.C., at the Walter Washington Convention Center, 12 Noon to 5 PM, September 17, and 9 AM to 5 PM, September 18.

The urgent gathering is bringing together leaders of African ancestry from around the world to counter the attack on Black lives by developing concrete action plans to address the root causes of the attack: the lies of White superiority and Black inferiority. The 2015 Summit theme is “Taking Control of Our Destiny: Confronting the Deadly Mindset at the Root of the Devaluing of Black Lives.”

Rep. Bass said, “This is a ground-breaking and much-needed Summit that goes to the heart of the challenges faced by people of African ancestry all over the world. I am delighted to host it, and I look forward to working with the Summit leaders to help implement the action plans that will be developed.”

Confirmed Summit panelists include: Professor Gisela Arandia, Cuban activist; Sir Professor Hilary Beckles, Chair, CARICOM Reparations Committee; Professor Ikaweba Bunting, The Pan African Congress; Dr. Ramona Edelin, author, We the Village; Momodou Jallow, Vice Chair of the European Network Against Racism (ENAR); Dr. Wade Nobles, Institute for the Advanced Study of Black Family, Life and Culture; Erika Totten, founder and president, Black Lives Matter DMV and To Live Unchained; and Dr. Paul Zeleza, former president, the African Studies Association.

“Black people around the world are under siege,” said Enola Aird, founder and president of CHN, creator of the Summit, “and in this, the United Nations-designated International Decade for People of African Descent, we must develop a unified global response to address the root causes of the countless injustices against people of African ancestry.”

Among the Summit supporters are: The Pan African Movement for Justice; The European Network Against Racism; The Caribbean Alliance of National Psychological Associations; The Institute for the Black World Black Family Summit; and The National Association of Black Social Workers.

CHN’s goal: the emotional emancipation by the year 2019, the 400th anniversary of the forced arrival of Africans at Jamestown colony in the United States, so that, by 2020, Black people will begin to see themselves in a whole new light.

“Because,” said Aird, “four hundred years of dehumanization are enough.”

Minority Police Officers Sue NYPD Over Illegal Arrest Quotas

A dozen Black and Latino police officers are suing the New York Police Department and the city claiming that their bosses forced them to carry out illegal arrest quotas “against their own minority community.” The NYPD has denied ever using quotas.

The class action lawsuit was filed in the Manhattan federal court on Monday.

Firmly rooted in the forefront of the American jazz tradition, which he has helped to shape, Booth's music integrates influences from world music, emerging beyond the boundaries of categories to express the poetics of universal humanness. Booth has performed, recorded and toured for over 40 years with jazz musicians from Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers to Tony Williams Lifetime, including many others like Albert Ayler, Betty Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Chuck Mangione, Sun Ra, McCoy Tyner, and Randy Weston.

Senegalese drummer Doudou N’diaye Rose dies in Dakar aged 85 Senegalese drummer and band leader Doudou N’diaye Rose, who was named a “living human treasure” by Unesco, has died at the age of 85. The musician, whose real name was Mamadou N’diaye, died in a Dakar hospital after being taken ill on Wednesday morning. The so-called “mathematician of rhythm” was a master of the sabar drum and led the Drummers of West Africa orchestra, made up of his children and grandchildren, in mind-bogglingly complex beat medleys.

He also conducted his daughters and granddaughters in the all-female group, Les Rosettes.

“Today we lost our father, our friend, a great man,” his nephew Doudou N’diaye Mbengue told Agence France-Presse.

Momentum Grows for Million Man Will The September 10th Primary March 20th Anniversary Gathering Be The Lowest Turnout Ever?

T

he return of throngs of America’s oppressed communities to the Washington DC Mall is a pivotal and defining moment in our struggle for justice in this land. This return to Washington is ushering in a bold new era in our efforts to unite the heretofore fractured factions of beleaguered communities, including Native Americans, who, among many tribulations, are experiencing the impoverishment of 32% of their children. It includes our Latino family, facing continued cruel expulsion from their own homeland, and currently ensnared in the brazenly vulgar display of racism that is the Republican presidential campaign stage. It includes the Hip Hop community, long a target of police and governSabirah ment forces for harassment Muhammad and the incitement of fratricidal conflicts that have often led to murder. It includes our young people, unable to tolerate their continued state sanctioned slaughter, and insisting… that black lives matter. It includes women, facing increased sanctions in health care and workplace disparities as they clamor for a place at the provisional table, and not spared the violent arrests, beatings, and murders that so many of our men are enduring. This return to Washington will accomplish the unified action that’s required to finally achieve the justice that we’re due.

Though much effort has been made to draw a stark contrast between the strong, uncompromising stance of Minister Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam and that of the more palatable Martin Luther King, this effort to divide the black family has only been successful to the extent that Dr. King’s strong and uncompromising positions have been purged from the annals of history. But Minister Farrakhan is resurrecting that history, reconnecting our present day struggle to the powerful strategy of economic withdrawal that was demonstrated, for example, by the Montgomery bus boycott. Just a day before he was killed, Dr. King was urging black folk to boycott companies that were discriminating in hiring…Coca Cola, Sealtest Milk, and Wonderbread. He was encouraging black folk to put their money in black banks, and to support black insurance companies. He was talking about building a “greater economic base,” “putting pressure where it really hurts,” and “redistributing the pain.”

And that’s what we’re talking about now. As Minister Farrakhan crosses the country rallying the multitudes, he is calling for a mass boycott of the upcoming Christmas season. He’s continuing the push for an economic development program, for the purpose of securing land, building industry and establishing trade on behalf of our suffering people.

Our own BLAC (Buffalo Local Action Committee for the Millions More Movement) is keeping up a frenetic pace to support the national effort for this anniversary march. You don’t want to miss the forums and activities that are upcoming, including a Town Hall Meeting at the Merriweather Library on September 14th at 6pm, and the arrival of Min. Shaheed Muhammad on September 18th. Bro. Shaheed, a gifted mathematician is affectionately known as “The Math Doctor.” He will also appear at the Merriweather library, at 1pm. In our own local display of unified effort, he will be hosted by our own industrious educator, author and columnist, Eva Doyle. Also joining forces for this anniversary event are our local motorcycle clubs, who are part of a campaign to organize 100,000 bikers nationwide to ride to Washington. Our local radio stations and their hosts are getting the word out, and our college students are organizing transport for their student organizations. Local clergy and the Dorrie Miller Rifle Club, Buffalo’s legendary Charlie Fisher and BUILD, the African Consciousness Workshop, and MOCHA, the black firefighters union, are among a wide representation of participants in this effort. Dahveed Muhammad, Student Minister of Muhammad Mosque #23 has the privilege of networking with representatives of local Seneca nation members, and with the Confederation of the Iroquoi Nation.

To be sure, while those who oppose justice for us are doing everything to hide our progress, they seize every opportunity to make mischief, starting with the fear invoked by the ominous theme: “Justice or Else!” Or else what?...they say. For those who are vulnerable to that fear, rest easy. We’re not going to Washington to create mayhem. We’re going to inspire a nation of oppressed peoples to place a legitimate demand on government for justice, and to unify in spite of their response to change our condition. Indeed, Dr. King said it well: “We are confronting issues that cannot be solved without costing the nation billions of dollars. We can’t get rid of slums and

In Tuesday’s edition of the Buffalo News, many politicos were expounding on the upcoming , largely Democratic Primary on Thursday, Sept 10th. Most of them agree that because of no significant county races such as the county executive, legislators or District Attorney, there will be a record low voter turnout this Thursday.

The fact that there are two hotly contested Common Council races (Masten & Fillmore District) did nothing to convince them that the Primary was nothing more than a ‘yawn’. I guess anything as ‘local’ as a couple of council races in the inner city or on the East side was of little to no significance to them. Former City of Buffalo mayor Anthony Masiello, even predicted that “we would Betty Jean be hard pressed to even break the 10% voter participation level.”

GRANT If that does indeed happen, it means that only one voter out of the 10 voters that could have voted, actually voted! Holy Toledo! Is that even possible?

Have we become so apathetic that we only vote in significant numbers in the presidential elections every four years? Don’t we realize that the more local the politician, the more help and assistance they can give us? I love President Obama just as much as anybody else but when I need help with lowering my property taxes or getting a sidewalk fixed or a dead tree removed, I am not calling him...

I am calling my city and county representatives!

But seriously though, there are at least three candidates, excluding Write Ins, that are competing for the council member seats in the Masten and Fillmore Districts. Since the petitions were filed and they made the ballot, they have been participating in numerous debates, putting up campaigns signs, walking door-to-door and kissing babies (just kidding about the babies). It would be a shame after all they have done to prepare us to vote for the candidate of our choice, we reward them by staying home instead of exercising a civic duty (voting) that others around the world are fighting and dying for.

Ancestors such as Denmark Vesey, Nat Turner, Emmett Till, James Chaney, Medgar Evers, Fannie Lou Hamer, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King paid the supreme sacrifice for us to participate in every Primary and General Election.

It would indeed be a terrible tragedy if 9 out of the 10 of us stayed away from the voting polls tomorrow, Sept. 10th. There are choices this year. Please go to the polls and choose a political leader to represent you on the Buffalo Common Council.

wendolyn Grimes was laid to rest during a beautiful and loving homegoing celebration on August 25 at the Swan Street location of True Bethe Baptist Church.

Born and raised in Buffalo to the late Jessie Smith and Geraldine Smith, Gwen was educated in the Buffalo Public School system and graduated from Girls Vocational High. She earned her cosmetology license through the Piccolo School of Hair Design. Known to “march to the beat of her own drum,” Gwen had a great sense of humor, was very strong willed, over protective of her family, feisty and had a heart of gold.

On August 18 she departed this life suddenly after a brief illness. She leaves to cherish her memory a husband James Grimes; two sisters Valerie Washington and Casandra Washington; four brothers Rashid (Billy), Faruq Gerald Smith, Brian Smith, Timothy Washington; three daughters, Marla Gillette (Calvin), Monica Davis and Jakina Grimes; three sons: Jermaine Grimes (Lashea), James Grimes, Steven Johnson and a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren, family and friends. Pastor Rhonda Henderson (Worship Without Walls) delivered a memorable and timely eulogy.

The family of Gwen Grimes expresses their heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to everyone who was a source of strength, comfort and support during this difficult time.

few weeks ago Charles Chapman quietly celebrated the 34th anniversary of his historic aquatic feat by acknowledging the local committee that helped make it a reality.

On August 24,1981, at the age of 27, Chapman, also known as Charlie “The Tuna,” became the first – and to this day the only - AfricanAmerican to swim across the English Channel(from England to France); a distance of 37.5 treacherous miles — in 12 hours and 30 minutes.

“One of my dad’s last requests was to always remember ‘the committee,’ said Charlie as he affectionately identified the persons in the 70’s era photo in the office of The Challenger.

A member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame, Chapman learned to swim at the local YMCA. He was nicknamed “Black Butterfly” because of his power-

ful butterfly stroke, which he refers to as “the ultimate endurance stroke in the world.”

In 1983, Two years after making history swimming the English Channel, he made another historic swim, this time around shark-infested Alcatraz Island to Aquatic Park in San Francisco. The first Black person to swim around the island and the first person to ever make it solely using the difficult butterfly stroke, he clocked a new world record.

In fact, he has set at least four world records for swimming — single-handedly shattering the racist myth that Blacks couldn’t swim well because their bodies’ muscleto-fat ratio didn’t provide the necessary buoyancy. Yet, he’s received more resolutions, proclamations, and citations from the state of California than the town he grew up in.

“The Tuna” kept on swimming, with each feat hoping to gain the recognition he deserved in the sport many critics said “Blacks weren’t made for.” In 1988, he set yet another record when he swam around Manhattan in a 28.5
