U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has named David Anderson, visiting professor at Nazareth College, to the Frederick Douglass Bicentennial Commission. The national commission was created in November to organize events and celebrations regarding the 200th anniversary of Frederick Douglass’ birth.

Anderson, a visiting community scholar from the College of Arts and Sciences and School of Education at Nazareth College, has spent much of his academic focus on Frederick Douglass and his family--a few of whom still reside in Rochester.

"We are trying to make sure that we have a voice that is for Frederick Douglass, but also make sure that his family is better known and recognized. It is the family that helped to make him the man that he was and the important historical David Anderson figure that he became," said Anderson.

"Hopefully this appointment will give me the chance to advance that cause. Frederick Douglass, his wife, and his five children resided in Rochester, New York longer than any other place in their existence."

Anderson chairs the Rochester/Monroe County Freedom Trail Commission, which helped in organizing and convening the four day “Frederick Douglass International Underground Railroad Conference and Festival” in Rochester in 2007. Also, Anderson collaborated with Nazareth professors Timothy Kneeland, Marie Watkins, and Tim Wieder in guiding students in production of an Underground Railroad exhibit. The ten-panel mobile exhibit debuted at the 2007 conference.

“This commission will immortalize a Rochester civil rights hero who fought his entire life for the emancipation, equality, and dignity of every American at a time when our democracy was far from perfect,” said Senator Schumer, Anderson says Douglass' story is an important one to tell.

"We got somebody who was born into a system that regarded him as a moveable property. And, it's you know, it's just an amazing story. Yes, he showed the way for a whole lot of people," he said.

The 47Th Annual African Mothers Day The 47th annual African Mothers Day will be held on December 15 at 6 p.m. at John James Audubon School #33, 500 Webster Avenue. The event is coordinated by First Community Interfaith Institute Inc. African Mothers Day is part of the Institute's month long First Fruits celebration, which will conclude with the Kwanzaa celebration at the end of December. Hostess Ester Gliwinski, a teacher at School #33, will describe First Fruits from an international perspective, and Minister Lawrance Lee Evans will lead the charge for the men to give flowers to the girls and women.

Refreshments will be served after the program. People who are interested in either case management or tutoring can sign up with Minister Lawrance Lee Evans Sr.

Mayor Lovely Warren announced that the City of Rochester Emergency Communications Department is hiring individuals interested in a career in public safety communications and will host a second Open House event for prospective candidates.

AREA BRIEFS Annual "Tree of Life" for Those Who Have Experienced Tragic Death of a Loved One The Community Health Center of Buffalo, Inc., is the proud sponsor of this year’s 15th Annual Tree of Life. The event is being co-sponsored by We Are Women Warriors, Stop the Violence Coalition, Peacemakers, F.A.T.H.E.R.S., True Bethel Baptist Church and No More Tears.

Karla Thomas began hosting this event at the Delevan Moselle Center in 2002 as a civic event under the umbrella of Grassroots, Inc,. In 2010 it moved to True Bethel Baptist Church at 907 E. Ferry. This is the first time it will be held at the Community Health Center of Buffalo.

The purpose of The Tree of Life is to bring family and friends who have experienced the tragic death of a loved one and are facing the difficulty of getting through the Christmas holiday season. Ms. Thomas, stated, “it’s a very difficult time for any community. Death by homicide, suicide or domestic violence is a different kind of pain and only someone who has experienced it can understand its depth.” The Tree of Life offers those who have endured it, a place to honor and celebrate the lives of their loved ones lost to these tragic circumstances.”

CEO, Dr. Lavonne Ansari stated “it is an honor and a privilege to serve our community not only by healing their medical aches and pains, but to also offer a means to help heal broken hearts and spirits.”

The event will take place on Thursday, December 21st from 6-8 pm at the Community Health Center of Buffalo, 34 Benwood Avenue, Buffalo, New York and is free and open to the public. Counselling staff will be available to offer grief counselling. Sorry, No TV cameras allowed inside during the event.

Legislator Grant Allocates $10,000 to the African American Veterans Monument in County's 2018 Budget In one of her last actions as the outgoing 2nd District Legislator, Legislator Betty Jean Grant was able to designate a portion of the $35,000.00 allocation granted to each county legislator to amend the Erie County budget to designate additional resources to the African American Veterans Monument that will be erected in the Buffalo Military Naval Park in Spring 2018.

As a result of the county executive allowing legislators to make additional amendments to the budget, said Grant, the monument, as well as the African American Cultural Center, Phoenix Theater and the Westside Ponytail Baseball League will receive more funding through her participating in the last budget she will vote on as a county legislator.

“It has been a thrill for me, working with Legislator Barbara Miller-Williams and later, Legislator Tim Hogues (2012-2014) to advocate and deliver Legislator Grant much needed funding to the residents of the City of Buffalo and to many of the festivals and events that the African American Cultural Center sponsors yearly,” she said. “ As a proud sponsor and supporter of the African American Veterans Monument, I was happy to assist the organization's Chairman, Warren Galloway, in his goal of requesting at least $10,000 from each of the elected officials in WNY. Through my lobbying, support and vote, most organizations that received funding in the 2017 budget will receive the same amount in 2018 budget that was voted on and approved by the Erie County Legislature on Thursday, December 7, 2017.”

Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor Hosts a “Soulful Christmas”

The Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor hosted a “Soulful Christmas” and its third annual Christmas tree lighting last Saturday at two Michigan Street Churches, The Michigan Street Baptist and Pilgrim Baptist. This year's theme, according to organizer Gail Wells of the Heritage Corridor, was “the celebration of African American Holiday traditions that are practiced during the holiday season and reflect the blending of African and American culture and heritage.” The Christmas Tree lighting and the appearance of “Kente Youngsters surround Kente Clause during "Soulful Clause” proved to be the highlight of the Christmas" event last Saturday. day long festivities.

“Santa is now represented by different racial and ethnic groups and we have our very own Santa to delight old and young alike,” explained Ms. Wells. “ Kente Claus exposes all children to an afro-centric Santa who wears Kente Cloth from Ghana and portrays a Caribbean, African American and African interpretation of Christmas. Kente Claus is an example of how African American culture unites African heritage and American tradition."

Kente Claus shared the story of Christmas throughout the diaspora and in Africa. One source describes Kente Clause as a Black man whose mission is to inspire “love, peace and family unity'' and a kind of bridge between Christmas and Kwanzaa, which is celebrated Dec. 26 thru January 1.

The well attended “Soulful Christmas” also included gospel music, The Tradition Keepers (Storytellers), a holiday village and marketplace that featured children's arts and crafts, vendors, free books, caroling and good food.

Erie County Legislator Betty Jean Grant and Mayor Byron Brown were among those who were spotted enjoying the festivities.

-KwanzaaKwanzaa will be held December 26 thru January 1. This year the venue has been changed and the celebration will be held at East Community High School nightly at 7 p.m. Maulana Karenga, the creator of Kwanzaa, will deliver his annual Kwanzaa message on Thursday, December 28.

John Chavis

America's First Black College Student John Chavis is considered the first Black college student in America. Born free, he studied under with the president of what would later become Princeton University and a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Chavis was born in either 1762 or 1763 to free parents in heavily debated places of origins that include North Carolina, Virginia, and the West Indies. Most historical accounts say North Carolina as his state of birth. Details of his early life are scant, but in the 1790s, Chavis began studying privately with John Witherspoon, who was the president of the College of New Jersey Theological which is now Princeton University.

Prior to studying with Witherspoon, Chavis fought in the Revolutionary War for the U.S. Continental Army in Virginia, then became an educator. Chavis and his wife, Sarah Frances Anderson, moved to New Jersey in pursuit of better opportunities, which is where he encountered Witherspoon.

After Witherspoon’s death in 1794, Chavis entered Virginia’s Liberty Hall Academy, now known as Washington and Lee University, named after President George Washington and Confederate General Robert F. Lee, both known slave owners.

While no record of Witherspoon’s graduation exists, it is possible he did so because of his status as a licensed minister with the Presbyterian Church. (From Dr. Henry Louis “Skip” Gates‘ 100 Facts About The Negro.")

Legislator Miller-Williams Successfully Advocates for Increased Funding for ECC, Libraries, and Combating the Opioid Crisis Erie County Legislator Barbara Miller-Williams (D-Buffalo), along with her legislative colleagues, unanimously adopted the Erie County budget for 2018, ensuring that vital services remained intact. County Executive Mark Poloncarz is expected to approve amendments including added support for local community initiatives. Legislator Miller-Williams championed funding for the Hispanic Heritage Council as well as increasing the funding levels for Erie Community College, and the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library system.

“I would like to thank the many residents and community groups who took their time to share their concerns regarding the 2018 proposed County budget. I look forward to continuing our public discussions as we monitor the 2018 County budget and prepare for the 2019 budget process. It is my intent to host a public meeting regarding the Erie County budget funding application process to outline the entire process for community organizations,” stated Legislator Miller-Williams.

Natural Remedies for Cold & Flu Home Remedies From Things Already In Your House 1.Garlic– A powerhouse natural antibiotic, anti fungal, and antibacterial, garlic can tackle almost any illness. For the most potent effect, finely mince 1-2 cloves or garlic and float in a small glass of water.

2.Hydrogen Peroxide– At the first sign of cold, flu, sinus infection, or ear infection, put a dropper full of hydrogen peroxide into each ear. bling. Do this on both sides. This is especially effective for kids. Repeat every few hours until infection is gone.

3.Hot Liquids– Load up on the hot herbal teas and hot lemon water at first sign of illness. The heat helps boost immune system and a variety of herbs can help with infection.

4.Cinnamon– Good for more than just stabilizing blood sugar, cinnamon is an effective antiviral and antibiotic. When sick, mix 1 tablespoon with 1 teaspoon of honey and stir to make a spicy and very effective tea that helps relieve cough and congestion and lower fever.

5.Face Steam– In a pinch, this can be made with kitchen herbs. Boil 1-2 cups of water in a large pot. Remove from heat, add 2 teaspoons each of thyme, rosemary and oregano. Cover for 5 minutes with a lid, and then remove lid and put face directly over pot with towel covering your head to hold in the heat. Breathe in the steam as long as you can, aim for 15 minutes. This will help loosen congestion and kill viruses and bacteria in the lungs, bronchials or sinuses.

Alternately, you can use 1/2 cup vinegar in the steam. It won’t smell great, but it will help fight the illness.

6.Remove White Foods– At the first sign of illness, completely remove all white foods from the diet. This includes grains, sugars, milk, cheese, dairy, sweeteners, soda, etc. These foods suppress immune function and slow the body’s healing ability. When you are ill, you don’t actually need to eat a lot of food, as the body needs to focus more on healing than digestion. Eat fresh chicken soup and drink hot liquids to keep strength up.

7.Hydrate and Rest– If the body is running a fever (which means it is fighting the illness) the best support

you can give is to stay well hydrated on water and herbal teas and to rest enough.

King Center Charter School Helps Families Get A Head Start On Kindergarten Readiness

iteracy Night screens children and provides parents with reading ability, kindergarten readiness tips Buffalo’s King Center Charter School (KCCS), 156 Newburgh Ave., will hold its Literacy Night on Wednesday, December 20 at 4pm.

The school’s Kindergarten Team will be on site to conduct reading screenings for children age 3-6 years old and will provide families with strategies to improve their children’s reading ability before they enter kindergarten. The event is open to all city families with children in that age range. The school

Shooting of 12 Year Old Black Boy, And The Issue of America’s Racism

Black 12 year old boy was shot in the face allegedly by a 61 year old White homeowner who thought the boy threw a rock breaking a window in his bedroom; but as of this writing no evidence has been found to associate the 12 year old with having committed any crime or act of vandalism.

No such evidence has linked the young boy with violating the homeowner’s person or property.

The information regarding the shooting appears rather slanted by the News in favor of the homeowner, and the 12 year old victim as the aggressor. As of this writing the boy remains in Women and Children’s Hospital Of Buffalo, suffering from major injuries as a result of the shooting.

According to the Buffalo News published on Saturday, November 18, and November 21, 2017, the shooter, Edward Bald at no time admits seeing who broke his winTED dow, only that he heard the window break KIRKLAND and his immediate response was to get his shotgun, stick the barrel through the hole in the broken window, and fire at no particular person among 2or3 children outside his home, according to Bald’s statement in the News. When told the person he shot was 12 years old, Bald appeared to mock the child, responding that, “If he is 12, he must have been born in a leap year or something,” said Bald.

The Buffalo News headline of November 21, 2017 was, “Man had right to defend home, boy’s family says.” But it wasn’t clear under what circumstances the family made this statement, leaving the possibility that they were coached or intimidated. The following statement appeared in the first paragraph of the News report: "The family of the boy shot in the face by a homeowner on Buffalo’s East Side isn’t calling for charges against the shooter."

This statement appears rather odd considering it’s not the responsibility of the family to consider criminal charges against Mr. Bald; it is the responsibility of the Erie County District Attorney, who at this juncture is rather slow in performing his duties in this case.

In the second paragraph of this Buffalo News report of November 21, 2017 the boy is said to have lost his right eye from shotgun pellets as well as pellets being embedded in his brain. He also has a collapsed lung as a result of being hit by the shotgun blast in the face and chest.

Several paragraphs later in the same article is a suspicious statement said to be offered by a member of the boy's family: The boy’s family isn’t sure whether the boy and his friend intended to burglarize the home of 61-year-old Edward M. Bald or whether they were vandalizing it , according to Tearra L. Perry, the boy’s aunt. But either way, they were doing something to the man’s property, she said. But her statement makes no sense unless she was on the scene and witnessed the incident.

How could the family be so wrong and so condescending? Who is advising this family?

I find it difficult to believe that a relative in this day and age would condemn a young child, a member of their family, without evidence showing their guilt and even then most people would seek the advice of those who know, such as a lawyer, and not street parasites. In this case a good civil lawyer is necessary to obtain some system of justice for this 12 year old who will be handicapped for life as a result of losing an eye and internal injuries.

A coalition of organizations held a press conference last week to demand justice in the wake of the young boy who, at age 12, was shot after allegedly throwing a rock in an East Buffalo resident's window.

house, nor were they a threat to Mr. Bald. So we are left with a child that will be handicapped for life, who is still in Children’s Hospital, while the man who admitted to shooting him walks around free, as if a Black life means nothing to the police, district attorney or him.

When the police first arrived at the Quincy Street shooting they appeared to have been given all the information they needed to arrest Bald. His admission that he fired a warning shot through the hole in the broken window toward two or three boys around noon that day because he felt they broke his window was sufficient cause to make an arrest. But according to the Buffalo News article the police left without making any arrest in this incident. So what do we have?

We have a White man of 61 who apparently lives on Quincy Street who claims his window was broken by someone outside his home, so he gets his shotgun and shoots. A 12 year old is hit and is confined to Children’s Hospital. Police officers investigating the shooting leave the scene without making an arrest of the shooter, even though a felony has been committed.

One can assume that a decision was made not to arrest the shooter came from some person in a higher position than the uniformed police officers on the scene. One name mentioned in the first article as being at the scene is that of Michael J. De George, who was identified at the scene as a spokesman for the Buffalo Police Department, but he is often seen in the company of Mayor Byron W. Brown, which brings to the forefront the possibility that politics may have something to do with the decision not to arrest the shooter.

By not being arrested the confessed shooter cheats the general public of the privilege of seeing his face on the six o’clock news and his picture on the front page of the Buffalo News leaving his home in handcuffs and being charged with attempted First Degree murder of a 12 year old boy. Just a few days earlier Travis Green, who was charged with shooting up the outside of a Dollar Store was not only arrested, but his picture appeared on the front page of the Buffalo News at least twice. But he is Black.

So who is Bald that police officers and the District Attorney are risking their reputation for allowing him to remain free and uncharged? Who is this man who has suddenly emerged from darkness into light, who can confess to shooting and ending the normal life of a child, and make light of it and still walk among us without shame, fear or apology. Is he married, does he have children, does he like children, does he like Black children? How does he treat children?

Does he work, is he disabled? Does he have a criminal record? What is his image among Black children, his image among neighbors both Black and White?Ddoes his house appear well kept or abandoned?

Is he politically active? And finally, why is he allowed to walk

among us taxpayers, voters, and grievers with such a special privilege? Why is Bald being treated different than Blacks are treated by the Buffalo News, police and the office of the district attorney? -More to come-

On that day the Coalition to Save MLK Park will call a community press conference in front of that " Black Head " to kick off the "We The People Campaign" to collect 10,000 signatures of residents from Erie County and the City of Buffalo. The peition will be calling for the removal of the current Martin Luther King "statue" in MLK Park and the creation of an enlarged life-size identical replica of Dr. King to replace it. We in the Black and African-American community have grown tired of

symbolism when it comes to the visual recognition of Dr. King. We now seek realism and the opportunity to be able to recognize this great American. It's critically important for our children and for future generations to be able to do so as well!

African American Voters Made Doug Jones a U.S. Senator in Alabama Doug Jones, a Democrat, defeated Republican Roy S. Moore in a special election on Tuesday to fill the United States Senate seat vacated by Jeff Sessions, now the attorney general. Election day defied the narrative that Blacks were not enthusiastic about this race, and challenged traditional thinking about racial turnout in offyear elections and special elections. Precincts in the state’s “Black belt,” where the African American population is concentrated, reported long lines throughout the day, and as the night waned and red counties dominated by rural White voters continued to report disappointing results for Moore, votes surged in from urban areas and the Black belt. By all accounts, Black turnout exceeded expectations, perhaps even passing previous off-year results. Exit polls showed that Black voters overall made a big splash. The Washington Post’s exit polls indicated that Black voters would make up 28 percent of the voters, greater than their 26 percent

share of the population, which would be a dramatic turnaround from previous statewide special elections in the South, including a special election for the Sixth District in Georgia which saw Black support for Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff dissipate on Election Day.
