Garth Fagan Dance Kicks Off Its 46th Home Season!

I

nternationally acclaimed Garth Fagan Dance will kick off its 46th Home Season with an opening performance at Nazareth College Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, Nov. 30. Performances will run through December 4.

Tony award-winning choreographer Fagan, a major player in the world of dance who could live anywhere in the world, told WHEC why he keeps his company in Rochester .

"Rochester is home; Rochester has nourished us," he said. "A lot of the dancers are from Rochester: Steve Humphrey, who is still dancing with me after 46 years, is now 64 and has abs that you can't believe!"

In describing the debut of one of the company’s new pieces “In Conflict” he noted: "It starts off with a wonderful solo by Natalie Rogers, my Bessie Award winner. Then after her solo, Victor Jeune comes in and he does an in conflict solo too. Then the two of them get together in a duet that's not totally harmonious."

He adds, "And Rochester will see the works first before anybody else sees them."

The other new work, "A Moderate Cease" is by Norwood PJ Pennewell who has been with the company since 1978 and is rehearsal director and assistant to Garth Fagan .

Fagan issued a personal invitation to his hometown to come check them out this season.

AREA BRIEFS Buffalo Native Kelly Galloway Fights Human Trafficking Enslaved Africans and the Lincoln Myth

Buffalo native Kelly Galloway will give a talk about human trafficking at a Dec. 2 fundraiser at RAMP Global Missions, the Lynchburg, Va., Christian humanitarian organization she founded three years ago and oversees as president. The organization, which helps those in need, operates programs in Lynchburg as well as in Nepal, Brazil, Guatemala and India. The 31-year old missionary, who, along with her family, grew up in St. John Baptist Church on Goodell Street, spends about three months in each country. Kelly, who was almost abducted herself in Nepal, has opened safe houses in Guatemala and hopes to open additional ones in Buffalo and Lynchburg for victims of trafficking. She spoke at the Merriweather Library recently and was the subject of an extensive feature in the November 27 Buffalo News. She is the daughter of Lynette and Warren T. Galloway.

Hats Off to Officer Whitaker!

Buffalo Police Officer Jennifer D. Whitaker’s heroic actions recently saved the life of a woman who collapsed in the aisle on a flight from Buffalo to Las Vegas. Officer Whitaker immediately began CPR until the woman regained consciousness.

She was then assisted by city firefighter Rafael Suarez, as they raised her to a sitting position. Officer Suarez placed an oxygen mask on her. The woman later thankd Officer Whitaker after her daughter told her that it was the officer was the one who saved her life. After the flight landed the woman was taken to the hospital. Officer Whitaker never got her name. The Northwest District patrol officer has been on the force for eight years and has received a number of awards for bravery. Married and the mother of three, she and her husband James Whitaker, also a police officer, were the first pair to go through the Erie County Police Training Academy together as a married couple.

He told the News he was proud of his wife’s actions but not surprised. “She lives by the Golden Rule. Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.”

Author Eddie Mark Gives Book Talk Eddie Mark, prize winning author of “The Garden of Unfortunate Souls,” gave a talk on his book Nov. 29 at Chef’s Restaurant on Seneca Street. The program was sponsored by the Bistro Bookers. This powerful debut novel from a Buffalo writer depicts the consequence of violence, sex and gender conflict in Buffalo’s African American community. Mr. Mark is currently pursuing a PhD program at the University of Toronto.

Dorie Miller Day The Dorie Miller Rifle and Pistol Club Inc. will commemorate Dorie Miller Day, Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 5:30 p.m. at the CAO, 1423 Fillmore Avenue. The theme of the event is “Above and Beyond the Call of Duty: Remember & Honor Veterans of All Wars Especially Vietnam Vets.”

In the early morning of December 7, 1941, Japanese planes swooped out of the clouds above Hawaii and rained destruction on the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor.

Mess attendant Dorie Miller, a broad-shouldered sailor who had battled his way to the boxing championship of West Virginia, dropped his laundry and scampered on deck. In the midst of the crashing bombs and the onslaught by Japanese Zeros, he pulled his wounded captain to safety, sprang into action behind a machine Dorie Miller gun and fired away at attacking aircraft.

Dorie Miller, born and raised in Waco, Texas, was America’s first hero of World War II. He served as a mess attendant because at that time it was the only position open to Blacks in the Navy. On May 7, 1942, Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz pinned the Navy Cross on him for “distinguished service, devotion to duty, extraordinary courage and disregard for his own personal safety.”

He was the first African-American to be awarded the Navy Cross for his bravery during Pearl Harbor.

A careful reading of Lincoln’s 1863 Emancipation Proclamation proves that it did not free all of America’s enslaved Africans. In the surprisingly short document only the slaves of “rebellious” states are ordered to be freed; those states who were loyal to America got to keep their Africans as slaves!

The “Emancipation Proclamation” lists a whole slew of places to be “left precisely as if this proclamation were not issued.” At that time in history, Lincoln actually had no authority over the states where he “freed” the slaves. They were part of another country—the Confederate States of America—with an altogether different president, Jefferson Davis. Lincoln himself was never hesitant to express his hatred of Black people, like when he said: “As the negro is to the White man so is the crocodile to the negro and as the negro may rightfully treat the crocodile as a beast or a reptile so may the White man treat the negro as a beast or a reptile.” And in 1862 he wrote in part: “My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or destroy Slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it...” White historians and Hollywood mythmakers have made Lincoln into something he never was or wanted to be—a martyr on behalf of Black people.

However, “I don’t know if I’ll think that of Trump in two years,” he added. “The more immediate dangers seem to be: police statist assaults on undocumented Latino immigrants, a registry of Muslims, and a potential designation of Black Lives Matter and civil rights activists as quasi-terrorists. The other great, existential threat is runaway climate change because Trump has pledged to thoroughly deregulate energy.”

Saving Mumia and Others from a Curable Disease Activists in the Free Mumia movement plan a rally on December 9, in Philadelphia, to pressure prison officials to treat the political prisoner and thousands of other inmates suffering from hepatitis C. “Healthwise, Mumia is not doing good at all,” said Pam Africa, of Concerned Family and Friends of Mumia Abu Jamal. “He has the appearance of good health, but he’s itching all over” and “his health is declining.” A judge ruled that Pennsylvania prison officials are obligated to treat Abu Jamal, but he used a technicality to avoid ordering that the cure actually be administered. Pam Africa said next month’s rally will also highlight unsafe, blackish water in prisons. At one facility, she said, “young people coming into the prison are losing their hair.”

U.S. Election Ran on “Fear” and “Betrayal” “It is accurate to say that economic discontent played a part” in Hillary Clinton’s defeat at the polls, said Mumia Abu Jamal. But he thinks other factors were at least as important. “The Trump campaign represented, not just fear, but profound paranoia, and also white revenge for the darkening of America.”

However, “if Trumpism represented vengeance, then Clintonism represented betrayal,” because the Democrats failed to stand up on issues vital to their base constituencies.

Sharpton Calls For Historic March In D.C. For January Reverend Al Sharpton and National Action Network have called for a major march/rally in Washington, D.C for Saturday, January 14, 2017.

We Shall Not Be Moved is the theme for the march that has been called to protect the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and safeguard the legacy of President Obama. Thousands will converge on the nation’s capital a few days before the King national holiday and six days before Donald J. Trump is sworn in as the nation’s next commander-in-chief.

“We will rally and put him (and the nation) on notice that there are some things that will not be changed no matter who is president and what party dominates the House and Senate,” Reverend Sharpton wrote in his weekly Huffington Post column titled, “Notice to Trump: We’re Ready.”

Trump and Congress must protect civil rights, voting rights and ensure that affordable health care is an option for all Americans, Reverend Sharpton said.

“Some have given their lives and others dedicated their lives to try to make Dr. King’s dream a reality, and now they have added to that mission by preserving the legacy of President Obama.

Groups come and go, elections come and go, but some things must remain constant and non-negotiable,” added Reverend Sharpton.

Justice Department Announces Investigation Into Alabama Prison Conditions The U.S. Department of Justice will be conducting an investigation into the conditions at Alabama’s prisons for men, it announced in a statement recently.

“The investigation will focus on whether prisoners are adequately protected from physical harm and sexual abuse at the hands of other prisoners; whether prisoners are adequately protected from use of excessive force and staff sexual abuse by correctional officers; and whether the prisons provide sanitary, secure and safe living conditions,” the DOJ said in its statement.

“The Constitution requires that prisons provide humane conditions of confinement,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Vanita Gupta, head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.

Torture, Anyone?

Former Kansas Republican congressman Mike Pompeo is likely to be named CIA director in the Trump administration. “He’s a big fan of torture,” said Ray McGovern, a former CIA analyst who now spends most of his time trying to rein in the national security state. McGovern told Paul Jay, of The Real News Network, that Pompeo “visited Guantanamo, he said it was great, and then said, “As far as I can see, those prisoners are gaining weight.’” President Obama must share the blame. “If Obama had the strength of his convictions, he would have gotten rid of the torturers in the CIA,” said McGovern. “He let them stay, and now they’re having a celebration.”

Ending the Epidemic - Miracle Medicine Truvada Said to Prevent HIV AIDS Transmission

uffalo has one of the highest infection rates for HIV AIDS in Western New York right here in our own backyard – it is in zip code 14215. The escalating rate of infection of women of color and Black men who are having unprotected sex with men is making safe sex a thing of the past.

On Wednesday, December 7 the Community Health Center of Buffalo Inc., We Are Women Warriors and Legislator Betty Jean Grant are hosting a community forum to talk about the spread of this disease in Buffalo and how men and women can protect themselves with a new drug called Truvada. This drug is available at the Community Health Center of Buffalo, Inc., and has been approved by the FDA. We are especially asking women of color to attend this important information session as they are the fastest growing population being infected.

NBLCA To Host World AIDS Day Event in Buffalo

T

he National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS, Inc. (NBLCA) is pleased to announce a World AIDS Day event in Buffalo on December 1 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Durham Memorial Central City Café, 200 East Eagle Street.

The event will have on-site free HIV screenings; Affordable Care Act and Medicaid insurance registration assistance; appointments for medical, dental and behavioral health; and free gift bags for oral hygiene and preventative care.

Proceedings will begin with a press conference led by faith leaders to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and demonstrate unity in the face of the rising rates of HIV and STIs. C. Virginia Fields, president and CEO of NBLCA, said, “It was with great concern that we received the news that new diagnoses of HIV infection in residents of Erie County, New York increased nearly 20% in 2015 compared to the 2011-14 annual average. The reported increases in the number of early syphilis and gonorrhea cases in the county by 89% and 49%, respectively, from 2014 to 2015, were equally concerning.”

“World AIDS Day is an opportunity for our community partners to spread awareness about the status of the epidemic and encourage HIV testing, counseling as well as treatment and care around the Buffalo region” said Pastor Frank Bostic, chair of NBLCA’s Buffalo affiliate.

Pastor Kinzer M. Pointer leads NBLCA’s Legislative & Public Policy agenda in Buffalo. Rev. Pointer explained that “as faith leaders, we must lead by example and be charged with the responsibility of encouraging everyone to take the test, and know their HIV status.”

Faith leaders will launch a citywide campaign demonstrating their willingness to confront the AIDS epidemic. 35 YEARS OF HIV AIDS AND WE STILL HAVE AN EPIDEMIC….

It is mind-boggling that the world has allowed HIV and AIDS to infect people and steal away lives for 35 years and counting without coming together to eradicate the disease. Though the rate of infection in America is down from its peak levels in the late 1980s and early 1990s, there are still 1.2 million people living with HIV in the U.S., and they are disproportionately African American, as well as gay, bisexual or transgender.

Marsha McWilson To Sing At Niagara Catholic High Dynamic entertainer Marsha McWilson will be doing a benefit concert for Niagara Catholic High School on Saturday, Dec. 10 from 6 to 10 p.m. The Christmas show will feature McWilson’s interpretations of songs by legends like Etta James, Tina Turner, Gladys Knight, and Aretha Franklin. She will be backed by The Beautiful Music Band. Joining her on stage for this lively event will be fellow entertainer Richie Derwald. Such losses make the Friday Night Affair concert series which brings unsung, legendary talent to Western New York all the more special. It wrapped up its final installment of the year with a performance from the magnificent Miles Jaye at the Tralf recently.

The vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, chef and all around renaissance man (he even makes and sells his own soaps and candles) performed such classics as “Let’s Start Love Over,” I’ve Been A Fool For You” and “Heaven” with pure aplomb, his baritone, both velvety and dynamic, spun a soulful, romantic aura as the couples in the audience embraced and reminisced.

But any seasoned performer ---and with over 30 years in the business including stints as the late-great Phyllis Hyman’s music director and collaborations with Teddy Pendergrass, George Duke and Roy Ayers, Jaye is a true veteran--- can Matt Bauer (left) and his wife pose with get up and deliver Miles Jaye. their hits. With storytelling skills that suggest he could pursue yet another career as a comedian and a seamless, organic, interaction with his audience, Jaye wove a narrative of resilience and inspiration that transcended the romantic throughout his nearly two hour set.

“I’ve Been A Fool For You,” when I wrote it, it was about a personal experience, a relationship,” explained Jaye after the show.

“But as I matured I saw its universality. Whatever your obstacle and obstruction is, use it to say ‘you got me for a minute but tomorrow’s a new day. I’m about to turn the chapter. It’s over now and walk into that new thing. ‘” Classically trained as a violinist, Jaye displayed a spirited virtuosity on the instrument rarely seen, most notably on a gutbucket, instrumental cover of The Beatles’ “Come Together” that seemed incredibly timely given the current political climate.

“Music is a unifier and that’s my job---to make sure that everybody feels a bit of love when they’ve left and maybe a bit more than when they got here,” he said.

hat happens after love at first sight? That’s exactly what we find out as the star studded cast of MC Lyte, Chrisette Michele, Musiq Soulchild, Marsha Ambrosius, Dave Hollister,Raheem DeVaughn and more join forces to tell the classic and iconic love story of Darius and Nina in Love Jones, the Musical on stage live in Buffalo at Shea’s Performing Arts Center Friday December 9 and in Rochester at the Rochester Auditorium theater Saturday, December 10.

Featuring some of the best voices in contemporary R&B, the story is set in Chicago, where Nina, a talented photographer, meets Darius, a popular spoken word artist, during a poetry slam hosted by hip-hop pioneer MC Lyte at a popular night spot dubbed The Sanctuary, and the attraction between the two of them is immediate in this fast paced, witty adaptation of the coming of age love story that captured the hearts, minds and souls of an entire generation.

While the essence of the film’s plot around Nina and Darius’ relationship is incorporated into the musical production, veteran theater producer Melvin Childs chose to revamp the plot with additional characters, chart-topping hits, and original music to adhere to stage limitations.

“There’s lots of different characters in this stage play that you didn’t see in the movie,” Childs said during an interview with The Huffington Post. “We changed a little bit of the character’s personalities, ... It’s just no way you can make it exactly like the movie, or otherwise we wouldn’t have been able to make it as entertaining as it is. And I think for the most part, they’re actually pretty good changes.”

The usual characters of the “urban” theater genre are in full effect: the flamboyant gay male the heroine’s loud, bossy best friend; the leading man’s comedic, yet wise, sidekick and the slick, irresistible villain from the leading lady’s past.

From the moment they lay eyes on each other, Darius and Nina’s lives are turned upside down.

But neither of them is ready for “the real thing”; she’s just gotten out of a relationship and isn’t sure if she is really ready to move on. He has decided to pursue his dream of becoming a writer and needs to focus on his career.As much and as hard as they try to fight it, neither of them can resist what is pulling them together. It’s a passion, an obsession, a “Jones” that comes along once in a lifetime! “I want people to come in and be inspired by the story of Black love and that it’s still alive no matter what the press or the media may portray at times,” said Childs.

ere! is a Burchfield Penney Art Center rearview window to the living culture that shaped this region. It is one of the major exhibitions that celebrates The Center's 50th anniversary, a premiere conception through photographs, paintings, prints and sculpture selected to capture a glimpse of the complex culture of Western New York.

What has the Burchfield Penney learned about the regional culture from its collection? And from the collections of The Challenger, Ron Wofford, Celeste Tisdale, Ron Smith and others?

How is the Buffalo community unique, and how did we develop that identity? What are the ideas through which people know us? These questions shape an exhibition forum that aspires to gain greater understanding of the base from which the community now moves forward.

“Here! looks at the cultural piece-parts that have represented our region, adds up what these elements have meant to our community and becomes a means through which we know and name ourselves. Ron Wofford was engaged in so many media when Buffalo needed him most and remains a catalyst for the constant rebirth of our city,” said Dr. Anthony Bannon, Burchfield Penney executive director and co-curator of the show. “The artistry and leadership of Ed Smith in theater was central to the formation of the Buffalo Black Drama Workshop. The poetry of Celeste Tisdale graced the audiences of the Nia Writers Workshop. It is also a special blessing to feature works from The Challenger archive and the late Bro. Simba Mlee in the installation. We hope to propose ways to identify our many cultures and reassert ways in which we as a community of good neighbors are joined and can grow together.”

The Here! project, on view through Sunday, February 19, 2017, seeks input from viewers, who are asked to submit copies of photographs or drawings they believe represent an aspect of the culture we create for ourselves in Western New York. Pictures with a brief explanation may be brought into The Center for installation as a part of the show. The copy pictures will not be returned, but may become a part of The Center's archival record of the exhibition.

“The Challenger has documented life in Buffalo for decades,” said Burchfield Penney Archivist Heather Gring who is working collaboratively with Challenger staff providing technical support to help preserve its photographic collection. “We appreciate their generous contribution to this exhibition.”

The Burchfield Penney will celebrate its GOLDEN anniversary celebration Friday, December 9, 5 PM – Midnight. Activities that evening include live music filling the galleries, hallways, and elevators. There will also be site-specific installations by artists will in spaces you’d least expect.

The event is free and open to the public.

Along the great Buffalo river, where the waters are dark and deep The natives cry out in powerless anger as the Queen engages in a dreamless sleep.

Factories and companies are abandoning ship and people are leaving in record numbers.

City fathers wring their hands and moan while the Queen reclines in impotent slumber.

Leaders are elected, decisions are made but it never seems to be enough New ideas fall on deafened ears; not a thing can wake the city up.

Tourism, museums and casino gaming could be used to make the city grow But leaders who confuse Church with State discourage their passage by voting no.

Along the great Buffalo River where the waters are dark and deep As they leave town the natives wonder why the city is still asleep?

As I saw it, this was the state of affairs in Buffalo almost 30 years ago. Fast forward to today and quite a few things have taken place. We have casino gaming in the city even if it is owned by the Seneca Nation. There are museums coming to Buffalo via Explore & More to Canal Side and the Burchfield-Penney Art Gallery plus a new and improved Buffalo History Museum and the Olmsted/Richardson renovations will do much to complement a growing Buffalo State College campus.

Anyone who left and have not visited Buffalo since 1988 would have trouble identifying where they are if they hap-

pened to visit the Fruit Belt in the Ellicott District, especially if they ended up near the old Buffalo General Hospital. A fully developed medical corridor that is home to a spanking new Children’s Hospital, a nationally renowned vascular center and the new SUNYAB Medical School and new housing units and hotels cropping up daily, will probably have the visitor wondering if they had been transported to some modern day version of the Wizard of Oz. A quick look and visit to the waterfront where, in the not so distant past, there was only a lonely housing development for low income and senior residents, a partially developed naval park and a sea food-oriented restaurant that kept the many, low-flying sea gulls company, is now fully operational and providing fun, excitement and entertaining almost on a 24 hour basis almost all year long.

Multiple music concerts and naval shows in the summer to ice skating, snow festivals and blizzard marathons and ice sculptor events in the dead of winter make canal side the designated place to be all the seasons of the year.

There has been talk of bringing a new train station to Buffalo. Three locations have been floated around: The Larkinville area, Canal Side and the Central Terminal, the original site of the train station in Buffalo’s long ago glorious past. I, along with many others, including Senator Chuck Schumer, Congressman Brian Higgins, State Senator Tim Kennedy, Assemblyman Crystal Peoples-Stokes, Legislator Patrick Burke and Council Member David Franczyk are rooting for the Central Terminal site.

ers to focus on an area that has not been improved by the boom that is taking place in all other parts of the Betty Jean city except GRANT the eastside.

The Central Terminal is located on Memorial Drive, in the heart of the Broadway/Fillmore neighborhood that has remained stagnant and undeveloped since long before the train station closed in the early 1970s. The Central Terminal is also the only site, of the three mentioned, that will allow the passengers to travel in both east and west directions. Think of a redeveloped train station that will transport thousands of passengers to and away from Buffalo. Think of the attention that forlorn and forgotten area will receive. Think of the hotel, office space and retail shops and stores that could be housed in the ample space that is located in the terminal.

Buffalo has had two gigantic bites of the state’s billions of dollars’ apple. The first bite renovated our public schools over a decade ago; the second bite was mostly consumed by the SolarCity initiative on South Park Avenue. We will probably get no third bite of Gov. Cuomo’s apple so let’s do the next best thing. Let’s use the need for a viable train station to motivate our leaders to start thinking about and investing public funds on the east side.

I believe Mayor Byron W. Brown has done an outstanding job of overseeing the many major improvements to our great city during his three terms in office. I also believe that in order for his mayoral legacy to be cemented, much more needs to be done to bring the east side of Buffalo up to the standard that are benchmarks for other parts of the city. Buffalo is indeed that shiny, golden ‘apple’ that we all admire and are proud of. But we, who live, work or represent the east side in government, know that that the proverbial worm that is representative of our neglected eastside, needs to be addressed and removed because we all know what will happen to that beautiful apple if that worm is allowed to stay.

The Untold Story of Cuba’s Support for African Independence Movements Under Fidel Castro

F

or many African Americans, Fidel Castro was a beloved ally and leader who spoke truth to power.

The leader and face of Cuba’s revolution, died on Friday (Nov. 25) at age 90. He was as beloved as he was despised. One of his greatest legacies was his fierce resistance of 50 years of U.S. attempts to topple him.

Raul Castro, Fidel’s brother and current president of Cuba, announced his death on state television in Havana early last Saturday morning, his voice shaking. It was reported that he ended his announcement by shouting the revolutionary slogan: “Toward victory, always!”

There were starkly different reactions on either side of the Florida Straits.

In the streets of Miami, home to the largest Cuban-American community, euphoric crowds waved flags and danced, banging pots and drums.

In Havana, bustling streets emptied and Friday night parties ground to a halt as Castro's admirers sank into grief.

Castro led the Cuban revolution, which overthrew the U.S.backed dictator Fulgencio Batista, under whose rule Cuba became the playground for rich American tourists and gangsters.

Glaring disparities of wealth persisted although the country was one of the most economically advance in the Caribbean.

After imprisonment in Cuba, and exile in Mexico, he led a rebel-army which triumphantly rode into Havana in January 1959 to become, at age 32, the youngest leader in Latin America. For decades, he served as an inspiration and source of support to revolutionaries from Latin America to Africa.

Castro and Cuba’s Support for African Liberation and More Indeed, if there was one region that benefited from the rise of Fidel Castro as leader of Cuba, it was Africa. Some countries on the continent, including Ghana, still benefit from the healthcare services provided by Cuban doctors who visit the country on rotational basis.

Cuba’s involvement in battles far away from home however came at a cost. Some 4,300 Cubans are believed to have died in conflicts in Africa, half of them in Angola alone. Experts however say the numbers have been sharply underestimated.

The Angolan War of Independence was a struggle for control of Angola between guerrilla movements and Portuguese colonial authority. The impact of the victory of Black Cuban and Angolan soldiers resonated far beyond the battlefield and is credited to have led to the overturning of White minority rule in southern Africa and the later collapse of the Apartheid Regime in South Africa, ultimately shattering of the illusion of White invincibility. By 1990, succumbing to increased international pressures, South African President F. W. de Klerk reinstated the ANC and released Nelson Mandela.

The Cuban Medical Internationalism program since the 1959, has sent Cuban medical personnel overseas, particularly to Latin America, Africa and, more recently, Oceania. Cuba provides more medical personnel to the developing world than all of the G8 countries combined. The program was started by sending medical personnel to help support the anti-colonial wars in Algeria, Guinea-Bissau, Angola and other African nations.

When natural disasters strike, Cuba provides humanitarian efforts all over the world, including helping with the medical crisis in Haiti due to the 2010 earthquake. In response to Hurricane Katrina, Cuba prepared to send 1,500 doctors to the New Orleans where the victims were predominantly African-Americans, although the offer was refused by the U. S. government.

While western governments appeared more focused on stopping the epidemic at their borders, Cuba lead the fight against Ebola in West Africa, according to an Oct. 2014 article in The Guardian.

-Support of the Black Liberation Movement in America“Castro’s revolution sparked leftist mobilizations around the world, including in America. The Black Panther Party’s experiment with radical social and political democracy in America, for example, comes from both African liberation movements and Castro’s Cuban revolution,” writes renowned researcher, writer and author Todd Steven Burroughs.

In 1960, while in New York City to speak at the United Nations, he took up residence in Harlem’s Theresa Hotel, where he had a short but significant conversation with Malcolm X. In 2000 Castro announced that Cuba would provide free medical training to hundreds of low-income Americans.

Burrought continues: “Cuba has kept the revolutionary spirit alive, regardless of its problems. For example, Assata Shakur, a former Black Panther and Black Liberation Army member who escaped to Cuba after breaking out of a New Jersey prison in 1979, has enjoyed political asylum there for at least two decades. The government has refused to extradite her back to New Jersey. Castro’s death may worry some black radical activists, afraid that Cuba’s posture will change.

“Propped up by the Soviet Union, Fidel Castro tried to implement a society in which all Cubans, including the poorest (read: darkest) got free health care and free education. He reached for his dream using words and bullets, becoming a guerrilla who violently took down the U.S. backed Batista’s dictatorship and stood up against the capitalist United States.

The nation he created was—is—in no way perfect: Cuba is decaying from the inside and out, and it has race problems it must deal with. But Castro showed the world that the possibilities of human existence were not limited to a system that left a tiny minority with all the land, wealth and power.

“During a revolutionary time he helped start, the Cuban leader identified with revolutionary Africans and Black Americans and shook that fist for himself and on behalf of his allies against their enemies.”

-Future UncertainAl-Jazeera reports that the US government spent more than $1 billion trying to kill, undermine or otherwise force Castro from power, including the ill fated CIA backed invasion of the island at the Bay of Pigs in 1961. The outlet notes that the CIA plotted to assassinate Castro for decades, using everything from exploding seashells to lethal fungus, cut off almost all trade to Cuba, and financed dissidents and pro-democracy activists, yet, he remained strong, holding onto the island nation and outlasting 11 successive administrations, from Dwight Eisenhower to Barack Obama.

On December 17, 2014, President Obama announced that the US planned to renew diplomatic ties with Cuba and loosen some trade and travel restrictions. Obama even made a historic visit to Havana in March 2016, the first sitting American president to do so in 88 years.

Although critics accuse Castro of driving the country into economic ruin and denying basic freedoms to many Cubans at home, defenders point to the fact that Castro’s government produced tens of thousands of doctors and teachers and achieved some of the lowest infant mortality and illiteracy rates in the Western hemisphere.

Cuba’s government announced that Castro’s ashes would be interred on Dec. 4 in the eastern city of Santiago that was a birthplace of his revolution. That will follow more than a week of honors, including a nearly nationwide caravan retracing, in reverse, his tour from Santiago to Havana with the triumph of the revolution in 1959.

The future of the US-Cuban thaw looks uncertain under Trump. He has threatened to reverse course if Cuba does not allow greater human rights.

Cuba says it refuses to be dictated to by foreign powers.

Recap: Bills Defeat Jaguars 28-21 The Jaguars had early success with running the ball against an overly aggressive Bills defense. LeSean McCoy scored on a 75 yard run from scrimmage, his longest run from scrimmage in his career. The Bills looked sloppy most of game on offense with tackle Jordan Mills continuing to miss blocks. The Jaguars allowed Bills offense to get going by Tyrod Taylor’s 62 yard completion to Sammy Watkins. This play was the turning point in game. The Bills seemed uplifted and continued its offensive attack. Justin Hunter’s 16 yard TD reception was the exclamation mark on the day. The Bills did lose wide receiver Walter Powell after being rolled up on while blocking down field. It might be a high ankle sprain at the least. This rash of injuries at wide receiver position will open the door for Justin Hunter to become a regular next week against the Raiders in Oakland, California.

George The Bills defensive end and Oakland native Lorenzo AlexRADNEY ander said, “We are starting to make those plays that need to be made in order to win the game. We were able to go after Jaguars QB after stopping the run. I look forward to going home and playing against Raiders - a team I played for last year. It’s always special to go home, but first we must study film and learn the game plan the coaches will have for us. The young guys are starting to see that each NFL game is won by a possession or two; there are no slouches in this league.”

Lorenzo is correct and the Bills must be prepared for the 9-3 Oakland Raiders, who continue to find a way to win each week.

The Bills must stop The Raiders passing attack. QB Derek Carr likes to go deep to Michael Crabtree and Amani Cooper which will give the Bills problems on Sunday. The Raiders’ offensive line is huge and will be a formidable opponent for Marcell Dareus and rest of Bills defensive line. The Bills v. Raiders will be an old fashion slugfest with plenty of penalties and fights. This game will not be for the faint of heart. If you really don’t like violence and very physical play by grown men I would advise you not to watch this NFL game on Sunday.

Prediction: I think The Bills will pull the upset 31-28 with Tyrod Taylor running for his life and throwing the ball while on the run to Sammy Watkins and Justin Hunter. The Bills must find a replacement for right tackle Jordan Mills who gets his butt whipped each week by the opposing defensive end. Tyrod deserves better protection than that from his offensive lineman.

LeSean McCoy will finally get loose for some very important first downs along with Mike Gillislee. The Bills defensive line will take control in second half and force turnovers from Raiders QB Derek Carr.

Buffalo State BENGALS Start Out Season At 3-0 Begin conference schedule this Friday, at home, vs Plattsburgh The BENGALS have come out the gate firing on all cylinders. Beginning on the road, Buffalo State beat a scrappy Pitt Bradford team 90-69. The BENGALS were led by Dom Grayer (23 pts), Lovell Smith (18 pts & 12 rebounds), Mike Henry (15 pts) and Jordan Chateau (13 pts). 3 days later it was more of the same vs Maine – Fort Kent, in the opening round of the Coles tourney, with Buff State winning 84-67. Nico McLean joined the double figure ranks of Grayer, Smith, Henry and Chateau by adding 10 pts and 7 rebounds while Jordan Glover added 8 assists! To close out a successful 1st week of the season, Buff State won a hard fought game vs cross-town rival Villa Maria, 94-83. For the 2nd game in a row, Buff State had 5 players in double figures. Coles Tourney MVP Lovell Smith (35 pts and 12 rebounds), Coles All-tournament team - Mike Henry (12 pts and 16 rebounds), Nico McLean (19 pts), Jordan Glover (13 pts) and Dom Grayer (10 pts).

The BENGALS have been pleased with the contributions from its bench also. 14 players have seen action in the 1st 2 games.

That bench depth should pay big dividends with SUNYAC conference play beginning this Friday. Buffalo State will host the Plattsburgh Cardinals. Plattsburgh has made it to the NCAA tournament 3 of the past 4 years and many feel that this year’s team may be as good as any that they have had in a while. That game begins this Friday, December 2nd, at 5:30 p.m. the next day, Saturday at 2 p.m., the BENGALS will then host the Potsdam Bears.

22 Students Inducted Into The National Elementary Honor Society!

Twenty Two Aloma D. Johnson Charter School (ADJ) students have been inducted into the National Elementary Honor Society for their academic achievements and outstanding citizenship.

Not pictured Danaysia Sweat “This is truly what school is about,” ADJ Director Dr. Richards stated. “We want [our students] to enjoy school and have fun, but [the Society] does stress academics.

We expect more from these students.”

ADJ Charter School honored a handful of its top students on December 4th for their consistent academic achievement and stellar citizenship.

The 22 students were recognized by the National Elementary Honor Society, a schoolbased program that celebrates high-achieving students who also demonstrate leadership skills and an understanding of service and responsibility. Each student recognized received a certificate and a membership card to the Society, joining ten sixth-grade students who are already members.

In order to qualify, fourth grade students must have maintained at least a 85 average for three consecutive semesters and had no disciplinary issues. The students also were required to be recommended by one of their teachers or administrators for the recognition.

Director Wendy Richards said the National Elementary Honor Society was one of her favorite organizations offered by the school because of the excellence it demands of her students. She said the students who were selected consistently went above and beyond what was expected of them, and that this recognition helps puts ADJ students on the pathway to success.

“This is one of our major organizations at the school where we stress academics and student achievement,” she said. “This is the beginning where they are challenged to excel academically, along with enjoying the benefits of their academic prowess because it affords them opportunities beyond the school site.

“This is truly what school is about. We want them to enjoy school and have fun, but [the Society] does stress academics. We expect more from these students. We’re not going to allow them to work at a mediocre level -- we want them to strive to do better. Having this in their portfolio, this will help them strive for excellence down the road.”

Richards said the students selected for this year had a particularly difficult challenge as the new Common Core State Standards were implemented over the last two semesters.
