The owner, Rosa Lee Moore has a passion and a love to share her unique homemade cooking with the community, family and friends.

In 1992, Rosa and her husband Cleveland Moore opened the Southern Comfort Café. The restaurant remained open regularly until 2009 when Mr. Moore’s health began to fail. He passed away in 2014.

Mayor Warren Announces Info Sessions for City’s Business Assistance Programs Mayor Lovely Warren announced today that the City’s Neighborhood and Business Development Department is conducting a series of open information sessions designed to help businesses located in Rochester access City loans, grants and other assistance.

Bills Give Fans Their Money’s Worth in Win Over Bucs

I

t was a beautiful day in Western New York for football on Sunday. The Bills and Bucs played a tremendous back and forth contest. Bills defense finally had a tough day against a very aggressive Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive unit led by Jameis Winston. Winston is the real deal and his receivers are tall and can be a mismatch for any defensive unit in the NFL. The Bucs must learn how to win close games and stop making key mistakes like the turnover late in the game against the Bills. They are a dangerous team in the very near future with plenty of talent.

Bucs running back Doug Martin said, “We knew the Bills defense was a tough physical team that plays hard with good GEORGE players to play against, but we need to exRADNEY ecute like we always do and we must get over the hill.”

Bills defense led by Preston Brown with 11 tackles and brought his career total to 409 tackles. He is the 13th player in team history to record more than 400 tackles as a Bill.

Tre Davious White punched the ball out and recovered it to put Buffalo in a position to win the game. Our number in the draft pick for 2017 has already assisted in most of our wins especially in Atlanta and again Sunday. He’s a winner and the entire team is playing with confidence.

Bills defensive end Ryan Davis, who forced a fumble by knocking the ball out of Tampa Bay’s QB Jameis Winston hand said, “It’s my sixth year, so I ‘ve learned its one game at a time, even though you won, but you have to recommit each week.

You have to prepare for your next opponent and before you know it all these wins will add up; Oakland Raiders are next and on Tuesday start we looking at film, practice hard and get mentally and physically ready for the Raiders.”

Yes, the Oakland Raiders - another explosive offensive team - comes to New Era Field. The Bulls must recommit just like Ryan Davis said and continue to play aggressive on offense and defense along with a very strong special teams unit.

Black Nurses Rock, Buffalo Chapter To Hold First Annual Scholarship Dinner The Buffalo Chapter of Black Nurses Rock, a powerful forum for Black nurses to share their stories, insights, and opinions, will host their first annual scholarship dinner on Saturday, November 4 at the Marriott, Amherst at 6 p.m.

As the trusted voice for Black nurses, we not only facilitate communication, but also act as a catalyst of change. Black Nurses Rock Buffalo is a part of the national organization Back Nurses Rock with over 46 chapters across the United States.

This organization brings light and life to vital issues pertinent the Black nurse profession and community.

Black Nurses Rock was founded in 2014 and is the largest minority nursing association in the country, representing over 174,000 African American nurses and students from the USA, Canada, Eastern Caribbean, Africa, Japan, And Germany.

n his opening remarks during a press conference at his Jefferson Avenue headquarters last Wednesday, candidate for Erie County Sheriff Bernie Tolbert declared that after twelve years of Sheriff Tim Howard, “our community needs healing!.”

Pledging transparency if elected, he assured that his commitment would be to the people of Erie County and that citizens would have a sheriff’s department “they can look to with pride.”

He later told The Challenger that the importance of the city-wide and community vote to his campaign on November 7th “can’t be overstated…it is absolutely critical” that voters go to the polls on November 7!

Assemblywoman Peoples-Stokes and Bernie Tolbert The press conference was called to announce that Tolbert had received the endorsement for Sheriff from members of Erie County’s Democratic Delegation to the New York State Senate and Assembly including Senator Tim Kennedy, Assembly members Crystal Peoples-Stokes, Sean Ryan, and Monica Wallace.

Standing with Tolbert at the endorsement announcement, Assemblywoman Crystal PeoplesStokes spoke on Tolbert’s character and qualifications and repeated the importance of getting the vote out.

“It is an honor to be here to support Bernie for Sheriff,” she said. Alluding to Howard’s dysfunctional reign she continued, “the best way to fix the problem (in the Sheriff’s Department) is to get a new Sheriff!” adding, “This is one of the most important races of the year.”

“There is no doubt that based on his experience with the FBI and his background in international security management, Bernie Tolbert will remove the stain of Sheriff Howard’s failed leadership from our community, and restore pride and professionalism to the sheriff’s office,” said PeoplesStokes. Citing his passion for justice and service, she added, “Bernie will be a tremendous asset to the residents of Erie County as sheriff.”

Acknowledging the NYS Democratic legislator’s endorsements, Tolbert spoke of the need for Erie County to identify the destructive mismanagement of Sheriff Howard’s administration and ways to prevent such damaging management in the future.

“I am honored to have the support of our Democratic state delegation of outstanding leaders and public representatives. When elected sheriff, I will look to partner with them in creating a safer county for all of our citizens, and engage them in reaching out to the State Attorney General and the State Commission on Correction to request state hearings into the condition of the jails and hold those hearing here in Erie County where our community can participate directly..”

Last week Tolbert flatly denied the ads currently running accusing him of sexual harassment in the past.

He released the following statement earlier in his in campaign in reference to that issue: "Tim Howard’s ad is classic political dirty tricks. It is utterly false. It is part of a pattern of disinformation, and misdirection that has characterized Tim Howard’s management of the sheriff’s office. He desperately wants to hide his appalling record: 22 unexplained deaths in the jails under his leadership; 700 overdose deaths in the county since 2015; a record-setting murder rate this year; and a toxic political environment made worse by Howard’s speeches to rallies of racists, bigots, and extremists.

“Howard’s ridiculous attack ad,” continued Tolbert, “includes a number of untruths including that I was involved in a sexual harassment suit at the NBA several years ago. Erie County residents and voters should know this is a lie pure and simple. I have never been the subject of such a charge. Tim Howard’s toxic politics of lies and hate have no place in our county.”

Black Land Loss -

In 2001, results from an 18-month investigation of Black land loss in America were published by The Associated Press. It turned up 107 of these land takings, 57 of which were violent, the other cases involved trickery and legal manipulations. Here are eight of these heartbreaking stories.

Birmingham, Kentucky Today, the town of Birmingham, Kentucky, lies under a floodway created in the 1940s.

But at the start of the 20th century, it was a thriving tobacco town with a predominantly Black population. It also was a battleground during a fiveyear siege by white marauders called Night Riders.On the night of March 8, 1908, about 100 armed whites on horseback raided the Black part of the town, shooting seven people, three of them fatally.

The AP documented 14 cases where Black landowners were driven from Birmingham. Together, they lost more than 60 acres of farmland and 21 city lots to whites – many at sheriff’s sales, all for extremely low prices.

Pierce City, Missouri In Pierce City, Missouri, 1,000 armed whites burned down five Black-owned houses and killed four blacks on Aug. 18, 1901. Within four days, all of the town’s 129 African-Americans fled, never to return, according to a contemporary report in The Lawrence Chieftain newspaper.

The APdocumented the cases of nine Pierce City Blacks who lost a total of 30 acres of farmland and 10 city lots.

Whites bought it all at bargain prices.

According to recent reports, Cancer now kills about 450,000 Africans a year. By 2030, it will kill almost 1 million annually, the World Health organization predicts.

The most common African cancers are the most treatable, including breast, cervical and prostate tumor. But they are often lethal in Africa because of lack of cancer medication.

the women have long skirts and their necks and heads concealed under lovely wraps.

When you step into the first door, you are invited to a shelf where everyone deposits their footwear, as shoes are not allowed any further. You enter beyond the doors of the sanctuary and are at once engulfed in the unmistakable perfume and smokey white hue of incense. The women part to the pews on the right and men to the left. Now settled in, your attention moves to the front wall of the church and you find your gaze resting on------ pale medieval artists' renditions of each of the twelve familiar apostles of Christianity. In fact, all the walls and windows are covered with brightly painted renditions of angels wielding their swords in battle, or the ever patient and kind portrayal of Jesus exhibiting the flowing hair westerners are used to.

The young priest is wearing an ornate, brocaded robe not unlike you would see on any Catholic priest. He is carrying a crucifix, a bible, and swaying a metal censer suspended from chains adorned with bells, which you find to be the source of the incense smoke.

Welcome to St. Michael's Eritrean Orthodox Tewahado Church of Buffalo.This denomination is one of six groups of churches, historically throughout eastern Africa and parts of the Middle East, that come together under the umbrella of Oriental Orthodox Christian. Nearly all of this church's members are resettled refugees from Eritrea, a country north of Ethiopia and across the Red Sea from Saudi Arabia, in what is known as the Horn of Africa.

The service is performed in the Tigrinyan language. Still, it is impossible for any typical east Buffalo church goer not to feel at home in the familiar call and response style that our own African American versions of Christianity have retained from our earliest history in this country. The entire service is one continuous three and a half hour song

between the attending priests and the congregants. (Spoiler alert, be prepared to stand for 95% of that song.) Two monitors scroll the words in both Tigrinyan and English for visitors, and you recognize "Lord, have compassion upon us. O Christ Lord, O Christ Lord, O Christ Lord... Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses..."

Tadewos Haileyesus, 32, is the head priest of the church.

He is married with four children, explaining that one cannot ascend to the position of priest without being married first. He drives taxi for a living in his more mundane secular life. Dawit Gehrezgheir, 43 and married with eight children, is the president of the executive board.

For years they shared space at the Greek Orthodox church at Delaware and W. Utica while scouting for a home to call their own. They agree that this Jefferson location "was God's pick" for them. Tadewos is the only paid staffer, everyone else volunteers. Dawit zestfully explains "the bible says at the end of my life when I go to Heaven, God will pay me.

He says 'what you do for me, I will give you back.'" They both agree that a happier life, the blessing upon your family, and service to God in and of itself are their own rewards.

The two explain practice of the religion is very rooted in diligent study of the bible.

"We need to go through the words of the bible", says Tadewos. In Exodus 3:5, Moses is commanded to remove his shoes as he approaches the hallowed ground of the burning bush. John 20:12 describes two angels in white who appeared at the burial tomb of Jesus. Thus, the tradition of covering oneself in white for service. "A lot of people know Jesus, but they don't know the correct way of Christianity, the correct way of God," adds Tadewos.

The 20year old millennial minstrel will perform songs from the project at the free admission show on Friday, October 27th @7 PM at Sword of the Spirit, 300 Kensington Avenue.

C West writes decision-making songs about choosing right over wrong and leading a positive life. The 20-year old debuted his dynamic spiritual love song, “Breaks Your Heart,” earlier this year and he is currently promoting his Billboard Top 30 Gospel Airplay chart single, “Focus.”

Russell Thompkins Jr.'s Stylistics Put on an Unforgettable Show at the Historic Riviera

T

he audience at North Tonawanda's Riviera Theatre were recently treated to one of the most unforgettable and timeless voices in soul music when the legendary Russell Matt Thompkins BAUER Jr. brought his Stylistics to the historic venue.

Opening act, The Shades of Blue, delivered a spirited set of Motown favorites (including their 1966 Edwin Starr-penned hit “Oh How Happy”) as well as a tribute to The Spinners during their forty minute performance that helped lubricate the audience for the headliners.

The now 66-year old Thompkins’ ethereal falsetto didn't waver throughout the 75-minute set. Expected Philly soul evergreens like “Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)” “I'm Stone In Love With You,” “Rockin' Roll Baby,” Break Up To Make Up” and “Betcha By Golly, Wow” were all present and accounted for; greeted warmly by the appreciative audience.

What was most evident throughout the show was Thompkins' poise and commitment to the material. In a 2015 interview with The Challenger, Thompkins acknowledged some of the dissent among original members of the group and how current members Jonathan Buckson and Raymond Johnson are responsible for his rejuvenation.

Dapper in black velour suits, the trio indeed have an engaging chemistry and their harmonies on “Children Of The Night,” and “You're A Big Girl Now” were especially potent, notably the extended vocal coda on “People Make The World Go Round.”

There were some welcome surprises as well, including a vibrant cover of Eddie Kendricks' “Going Up In Smoke” and some deep cuts for longtime fans like the European favorite “Can't Give You Anything (But My Love)” which closed the show on a poignant note following triumphant renderings of “Hurry Up This Way Again,” “Heavy Fallin', Out” and “You Make Me Feel Brand New.” The evening was not only compelling proof of Thompkins' and The Stylistics influence, but of their continued longevity.

Death of U.S. Soldiers in Niger Thrusts America’s Africa Policy in Spotlight

he death of Sgt. La David Johnson and three other Green Berets in Niger, and Trump’s insistence to Johnson’s pregnant widow that “he knew what he signed up for” begs the question: What are the United States and Western Europe doing in Niger?

On a macro level, as China has ramped up its economic footprint in Africa with trade and investment, the United States has been increasing its military involvement on the continent.

AFRICOM, the Pentagon’s military presence on the continent formerly known as the United States Africa Command, identifies its “core mission of assisting African states and regional organizations to strengthen their defense capabilities better enables Africans to address their security threats and reduces threats to U.S. interests.” AFRICOM now maintains 46 U.S. military bases in 24 African countries, with a dramatic rise in American commandos in the continent — 17 percent of U.S. special forces overseas — a U.S. presence of elite soldiers second only to the Middle East region. Currently, 800 U.S. troops are stationed in Niger.

Although Africa is of strategic importance to the United States due to the continent’s vast oil, natural gas and mineral reserves, terrorism is the reason AFRICOM has stated for its involvement in the region. More specifically, however, Army

Green Berets are in Niger as part of a counterterrorism mission to train Niger’s military to fight Islamic militants in neighboring countries such as Mali. They arrived in 2013 to assist the French military, which intervened in neighboring Mali the prior year after an Al Qaeda affiliate took control of the northern region of the country and was headed toward the capital city of Bamako.

At that time, President Obama sent 150 troops to establish a drone operation based in the Nigerien capital Niamey.

As Democracy Now! reported, Trump has given AFRICOM much leeway in going throughout the African continent and tracking down militant groups. The American special forces were embedded with Nigerien troops and conducting an operation in a remote western part of Niger. They were ambushed, and four were killed. “I was surprised that there were so many Americans surprised about the U.S. presence in West Africa.

That’s something we’ve been expanding for some time,” Amanda Sperber, a journalist based in Nairobi, Kenya, and Mogadishu, Somalia told Democracy Now!. “We have a drone base set up in Niger, as well. And the American presence on the continent, in general, is wildly underreported and misunderstood.”

The U.S. and the European Union spend $1.5 billion each year to support AMISOM, the African Union force in Somalia, according to Somali scholar Abdi Samatar. Samatar told Democracy Now! that the international community is not serious about helping the Somali people and nurturing democracy and peace, but rather about containing the problem.

“If they were to spend a quarter of that sum of money on developing a Somali security force that’s mobile, that it can engage in guerrilla tactics and go after al-Shabab, this kind of a carnage would have been easily sort of avoided, and the people would have been saved,” he said.

Although investigations are underway by American officials and there are unanswered questions, with members of Congress demanding answers, there are reports that Trump’s reluctance to discuss the deaths of the Green Berets in Niger could be a product of misguided U.S. foreign policy, specifically Trump’s inexplicable decision to add Chad to his travel ban. As Rachel Maddow reported on MSNBC, events in Niger might have caused this president to divert attention from the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the soldiers.

BLACK HISTORY continued families living in Ocoee, Florida, were lost after a violent Election Day attack on the Black community in 1920, known as the Ocoee Massacre. Some were able to sell their land at a fair price, but most were not. In 2001, the land lost by the 18 Ocoee families, not including buildings now on it, is assessed by tax officials at more than $4.2 million, according to the AP report.

The true market value is probably a lot more.

Hickman, Kentucky After midnight on Oct. 4, 1908, 50 hooded white men surrounded the home of a Black farmer in Hickman, Kentucky, named David Walker. The mob burned his house down after Walker shot at them and refused their orders to come out, according to contemporary newspaper accounts.

Walker ran out of the burning house with four young children and his wife, who was carrying a baby in her arms. The mob shot them all, wounding three children and killing the others.

Walker’s oldest son died in the flames. No one was ever charged with the killings, and the surviving children were denied access to the land their father died defending.

Land records show that Walker’s 2 1/2-acre farm was added to the property of their white neighbor. The neighbor soon sold it to another man, whose daughter owns the undeveloped land today.

Do You Really Want Sheriff Howard for Another Four Years?

S

ince 2005, Timothy Howard has been the Sheriff of Erie County. We have lived with his incompetence, his lack of transparency and his descriptions of conditions and incidents at the Erie County Holding Center and the Erie County Correctional Facility in Alden that rarely reflect the truth. I just took a look at an article that I wrote, just before the last election in 2013, entitled: “Who Will Be Our Next Erie County Sheriff?” I could have written it yesterday.

Not much has changed. I urged you then, as I am urging you now to VOTE! In 2013, improving conditions at the Holding Center was a real “hot button” issue. This time there’s not much excitement about the Holding Center or about the upcoming election on November 7.

By 2013, PRISONERS ARE PEOPLE TOO, INC. and the ERIE COUNTY PRISONERS’ RIGHTS COALITION, had invested a lot of time advocating for prisoners to receive humane and professional treatment. We were among several entities that led the push to bring in the Department of Justice to investigate Erie County’s Jail Management Division after a suspicious spate of suicides. We also urged the Commission on Correction in Albany to be more vigilant in its oversight, as it was discovered that Sheriff Howard was guilty of misreporting and simply not reporting issues at both the Holding Center and the jail in Alden.

Those who find themselves confined to either of these facilities deserve better that they are getting. In the early days of our advocacy, there were those who said that we wanted “4-star hotel accommodations” for prisoners. That was a ridiculous assertion, made in an attempt to make us look ridiculous.

When we held our rallies, and speak-outs, and teach-ins, forums, and press conferences, there were media people and others who asked if we were being paid to do the work of advocating for the voiceless.

Election Day, November 7th is almost here. Sheriff Howard has one opponent. You need to know who he is. You need to be aware of his platform. He wants to bring change to county law enforcement. You must come to our next meeting to be informed. Your vote is vital in making this community a place where justice prevails and those in power are held accountable. Don’t ever assume that the criminal justice system will never touch you.

Tell Your Congress Member to Reject the Trump Budget and Tax Plan Dear editor: I think we actually caught Donald Trump telling the truth. He called his tax plan a “giant, beautiful, massive” tax cut. And it is. The numbers are staggering. $1.5 trillion in cuts to vital programs like Medicare, Medicaid and food assistance. Repealing the tax on inheritances of more than $5.5 million. And $23 million a year in tax cuts just for Donald Trump. No wonder he thinks it’s “beautiful.”

The U.S. Senate just voted to move forward with Trump's budget plan. Now we have to stop it from passing in Congress!

Together, we derailed the right-wing’s disastrous health care plan. We need to do the same for an obscene budget that takes from our communities to give more to the 1%.

Tell your Congress member to reject the Trump budget and tax plan. Government should be investing in our communities and ensuring that everyone’s basic needs are met – not giving away trillions of dollars to the super-rich!

Republicans in Congress claim a Medicare for All, universal health care system would be too expensive. They say that free public higher education isn’t possible. They want to cut funding to programs that help keep millions of families healthy. But they found room in their budget to give away trillions of dollars to the Waltons, Kochs and Trumps.

Any member of Congress should be ashamed of voting for this plan.

We need a budget and tax plan that reflects the values and needs of our communities. That means more money for schools and infrastructure, expanding health care for all, creating good jobs by investing in renewable energy – and making sure that huge corporations and the billionaires at the top are paying their fair share in taxes.

The Trump budget does the opposite. Tell your Congress member you expect them to reject it!

Join Me In Voting For Positive Change November 7th! Sheriff Howard Must Go!

I

n my almost eleven years on the Erie County Legislature, no entity has frustrated or perplexed this writer more than the management (or the lack thereof), of the Erie County Holding Center. Among the issues: the non compliance of the Sheriff, Tim Howard and the then Republican County Executive, Chris Collins, to open the holding center to public scrutiny ; the federal government's inability to go in and ascertain for themselves how bad conditions were; legislators not being given the green light to tour the facility; and the taxpayers of Erie County who have been not well served by the current sheriff, who is now running for re-election.

Conditions for inmates have improved slightly since the Chris Collins days but that may be due to the fact that although the Erie County Legislature, that approves the holding center's annual budget, is controlled by a Republican majority, the administration that puts the spending budget in place is run by Democrat Mark Poloncarz. Even though conditions might be better for the inmates as a whole, there are still cases like India Cummings, Richard Metcalf and others who walked into the facility healthy, and left the holding center in conditions that ultimately killed them. India Cummings was less than 30 years old. Her death haunts me because she was a just few years older than my oldest grandchild when she died. I will admit that she was violent, destructive, drug addicted and knowingly mentally ill. None of these conditions, individually or all of them, collectively, should have doomed her to a sentence of death before she went before any court or judge. Richard Metcalf, another detainee, is dead because the deputy sheriffs who allegedly put a spit mask on him, admittedly without knowing how to do so, ended up strangling him.

These are just two of the twenty-two or so cases of abuse, deaths or suicides that are questionable under this current sheriff's administration. I believe that the federal government needs to revisit the Erie County Holding Center and either vindicate or incriminate the current administration in order to re-establish the public's trust in this facility and its ability to protect our family members and the citizens of this great county while they are detained (not convicted) until their day in court.

Another concern I have is how the monies derived from the Telephone Revenue Fund is being spent. This is money collected from the friends and families of detainees who call their relatives 'collect.' The phone service providers charge these family members two to three times what the call is worth, with the additional money directed into a special holding center account that was set up years ago, to spend to increase the detainees 'quality of life' while being a 'resident' of the holding center. The revenue can be as high as hundreds of thousands of dollars. But instead of purchasing educational, recreational or nutritional items, or even better quality shower shoes, this revenue source is used to buy uniforms for sheriff deputies, patrol vehicles, office equipment for the sheriff's offices and other non-inmate related items. Years ago, the then Democratic Legislature tried to convince the Sheriff to reallocate this inmate-generated, telephone revenue financial resource stream to benefit the detainee but to no avail. Many suburban and rural Democratic legislators were not too open to providing the detainees with any extra level of comfort regardless of the fact that the money came directly from their relatives and not from the Erie County operating budget.

In less than two weeks, the voters of Erie County will go to the polls and elect a new sheriff.

Will it be Democrat Bernie Tolbert or they will re-elect this current sheriff who needs to answer a lot of questions about the controversies regarding the holding center?

The decision on who will lead the Erie County Holding Center for the next four years rest with you the voters regardless of whether you go out to vote or not. I don't know about you but based on the record and performance of the current sheriff, I am voting for change. I am voting for Democrat Bernie Tolbert for Erie County sheriff on Tuesday, Nov. 7th!

Non-Residential users in ECSD Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 exceeding 91,250 gallons per year will be subject to an additional flow charge for that amount greater than 91,250 gallons. (Water use is used in lieu of sewage flow unless the property owner(s) can substantiate actual sewage volume.)
