he Rochester Summer Soul Music Festival will be celebrating its re-birth as well as its 25th anniversary when the celebrated event returns to the Roc’s Frontier Field on August 27 and 28.

“We re-named the Rochester Music Festival The Rochester Summer Soul Music Festival for a reason,” explained promoter Varick Baiyina of Experience Events, LLC who is handling the event for the third consecutive year. “We wanted it to represent the soul of Rochester which is everyone, so as we evolve the event we want to bring in different audiences and multi-cultural acts. That’s our mission.”

With that objective, Baiyina acknowledged the universal appeal of headliners Boyz II Men as a major factor in their appearance on the Stone Soul Saturday Concert. “They’re a good cross over group that everyone can come out and enjoy and have a great time. We wanted someone that resonated with multiple generations and races, as well.”

The festival kicks off Friday, August 27, with the Roc Summer Soul Tailgate, in the Frontier Field VIP lot at 5 PM. Hosted by Ruff Ryders, it will be a tribute to DMX--who was to have hosted last year’s Tailgate before his untimely death. The evening will also be dedicated to Rochester’s finest DJ’s, with a reward in store for the top seven.

Saturday opens with a free community block party at 10 AM, featuring exclusively local talent before the gates open for the Tweet Saturday concert at 4 PM. Besides the multi-Grammy Award wining Boyz II Men, the stellar line-up also includes Rochester’s own Tweet, Go-Go legends Sugar Bear & EU and The Hip Hop Alumni featuring Chubb Rock, Monie Love, Dana Dane, Kwame, Special Ed, Carpe Diem, and Danell Daymon among other surprise performers.

While the pandemic initially made the prospect of this year’s festival shaky, Baiyina said he was grateful for the many sponsors who’ve stepped up. “We didn’t know if we’d have enough people to sustain the event and make it profitable but we’re going to be able to put on a great show.”

Rochester, NY – In response to the CDC adding Monroe County to the “substantial transmission” of COVID-19 category over the weekend, Monroe County Executive Adam Bello and Commissioner of Public Health Dr. Michael Mendoza are recommending masking of all residents in all indoor facilities. Additionally, they have announced that all Monroe County employees will be required to wear face masks or face coverings in public and common areas in all Countyoperated facilities, effective Tuesday, August 3, 2021.

We’re seeing a surge of daily new positive COVID-19 cases in Monroe County and in many other communities across the state. While we know the vaccine is effective, we also know that the Delta variant is more contagious than previous strains of the virus,” said County Executive Bello. “As we continue to follow CDC guidance, and in order to slow spread, we’re strongly recommending all Monroe County residents wear a face mask when indoors, where we know the virus spreads even greater.”

“As this pandemic continues to evolve, we must apply what we have learned so far. The vaccines are proven

to be highly effective, even against the Delta variant, in preventing serious illness, hospitalization and death,” added Dr. Mendoza. “However, an additional layer of protection will help keep the virus from spreading, especially among our most vulnerable populations including the unvaccinated and immunocompromised.

Masks are a proven tool that can help us contain the current surge and protect everyone in our community.”

According to the CDC, areas with substantial transmission record 50 to 100 cases per 100,000, or a positivity rate between 8% and 10%.

As of Sunday, August, 1, the CDC data reported Monroe County’s rate at 50.02 per 100,000 people.

Friends of Broderick Park Say City Should Do More to Improve Historic Destination

Community activist George Johnson said conditions at Broderick Park are shameful. The park, which is of significant historical relevance because of its association with the Underground Railroad, is also a local attraction along the Niagara River. Johnson, speaking to WIVB, expressed concern about sinkholes, damaged fencing and debris. He said there were also areas along the park, that were not safe for childrlen or adults who might fall into the water.

The Parks department defended their track record and said improvements to the park are set to begin this fall, to which Johnson replied : "They’ve been telling us that for some time.” Johnson, who hosts a yearly Family Fishing Day event which draws huge crowds to the park every summer, said the Friends of Broderick Park would like to work with the city to make sure the safety repairs and improvements actually get done before the end of the summer.

Marcus Garvey was born August 17, 1887 in St. Ann’s Bay, Jamaica to Marcus and Sarah Garvey. Marcus Sr., his father, was a descendent of the Maroons. The Maroons were Africans who managed to escape slavery when they reached western shores by jumping from slave ships, or by fleeing slave plantations and establishing well fortified communities deep in the Jamaican interior.

Marcus Garvey was one of our true twentieth century freedom fighters. Garvey arrived in Harlem, New York on March 16, 1916. By 1919, Garvey was established as the President General of the UNIA/ACL, which had a membership of over three million people with more than 300 branches throughout the African World Community.

Perhaps Garvey’s greatest contribution to the uplifting of our people was his ability to find a formula for organizing African people around the African principle: the greatest good for the greatest number. A Plant-Based Vaccine Could Soon Hit the Market The first mRNA vaccine approved for human use was developed during the pandemic, and now researchers are working on another first: a plant-based COVID-19 vaccine.

Researchers at Quebec-based biotechnology company Medicago and drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline have developed a plant-based vaccine for SARS-COV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. And their recently reported interim findings from phase 2 clinical trials look promising. The vaccine uses a plant called Nicotiana benthamiana, which is a relative of the tobacco plant.

Like other COVID-19 vaccines, the plant-based option is a two-dose shot given 21 days apart.

Results of Medicago’s trials so far showed subjects developed a strong antibody response after receiving the jab— “about 10 times higher than those seen in people recovering from natural disease,” Brian Ward, MD, Medicago’s chief medical officer, tells Verywell. “And those antibody [measurements] are higher than almost all of the other vaccines that have been reported to date.”

The phase 3 trial of the plant-based vaccine candidate launched in March, and Medicago is recruiting subjects across the world including in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Fast Track designation for the vaccine, the company says, and Canada’s health agency has started a review process.

“The whole company has been working flat-out since February last year and we're within a couple of months of knowing how well this vaccine will work,” Ward says. “It works in monkeys, it makes a great immune response, and it seems to be very safe to give to people.”

Wearing A Mask Protects All of Us This has been weighing on my mind for several days now. Recently, I attended an inside event in Buffalo where almost every elected official was in attendance. The room where the gathering was held was filled to capacity, with many disabled residents in the audience.

I was saddened to see that out of 50 or more persons in that room, less than ten of us and none of the city leaders, were wearing masks. The two residential guest speakers had medical conditions that might have put them at a higher risk of contracting the Coronavirus, especially the more transmissible Delta Variant. I was hoping that the organizers would announce and request that those who had masks, would put them on or at least, have the venue's host distribute masks or hold the event in the courtyard that was large enough to accommodate the crowd.

With the Delta Variant spreading at such an alarming rate, some of us must speak out, even if we are criticized for holding everyone accountable for behaviors such as what happened in that room. If we don't hold ourselves accountable, how can we blame those who fail to get themselves vaccinated to protect the rest of us? We are still in the Covid 19 Pandemic.

The increasing number of infections in Erie County and Buffalo is proof enough that we are not over the hump and we are far away from the time when we can attend inside meetings and patronize stores and restaurants without our face masks.

Community Day Turns into Churches Campaign for Neighborhood Non-Violence and Peace Non-Violence Can Change History for All People

oul Saving Revival Center (SSRC) recently blocked off the streets of Fillmore and Broadway to host their annual Community Day. "Our annual Community Day offered a wide range of volunteer opportunities for SSRC to work alongside community and other partners to help improve our city and neighborhoods," said Senior Pastor of SSRC, Robert L. A. Robinson Jr. “Every day, we take pride in our contribution to society. It helps us to address a range of community needs, from mentoring youth, voter registration & education, promoting progress and prosperity, and our annual Clothing and Thanksgiving Dinner giveaway.”

Elder Robert L. Robinson III added, "the enormous turnouts we have seen in prior years is a reflection on our church

and its members and shows their sincere commitment to the communities we serve." He continued that it's important, especially now with all the violence erupting in the City of Buffalo.

"We must exercise our voice and be a pillar in the community to promote peace and non-violence and to encourage healthy decision-making, JesusChrist teachings and rallying people to reach their full potential, " he said.

SSRC partnered with East Side Care, Raymond Brinson Voter Registration, EGRIU Construction, VOICE Buffalo and many more to host the event. Saturday was filled with food, drinks, games, dunk tanks, prizes and more.

HONORING THE LEGACY OF GARVEY continued from page 3 Garvey and the UNIA/ACL had established an economic arm, the Negro Factories Corporation, with cooperative stores, restaurants, steam laundry shops, tailor shops, dressmaking shops, millinery stores, a doll factory to manufacture African dolls, and a publishing house.

Garvey also formed a Steamship Corporation. The goals and objectives of the UNIA had now become clear to the world. As Shawna Maglangbayan points out, “…the Garvey movement and UNIA had become a threat to the white world,” With the cooperation of anti-Garvey, “Negro leaders,” Garvey was eventually charged and convicted of mail fraud for selling stock in the African Star Lines. On February 8, 1925, Marcus Garvey was arrested and convicted for mail fraud and imprisoned in Atlanta, Georgia. With a great movement of support by his followers, Garvey was released from prison in 1927. Immediately following his release, he was deported from the United States and was sent back to Jamaica to continue his work. He continued to travel and while in London, on June 10, 1940, Garvey lapsed into a coma and made his transition into eternity.

The Garvey Movement was one of the greatest mass movements of African people in the world. Although the external and internal forces and enemies of Garvey caused his demise, the ideas of Garvey and the UNIA/ACL are still alive. We need to revitalize and resurrect the spirit of Marcus Mosiah Garvey at every opportunity. One special way to honor the memory of Marcus Garvey is for you to proudly display your Red, Black and Green Flag on his birthday, August 17th in remembrance. The spirit of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey’s is needed now, more than ever before.

eleased late last year, Gaine$’s Native Sun reintroduces the rising lyricist as a man celebrating his maturity. The 5 track EP, sheds a unique light on the rapper’s personal growth. Spitting knowledge as tender advice and harsh truths, Gaine$ uses his experiences to lead with confident reflections.

Applying an intensely artistic approach to his recent effort, the Buffalo native is emerging as not only a standout talent but a trusted voice in the local Hip-Hop scene.

Rapping since 2005, Gaine$’s lyrical agility has always been evident, but his Gaine$’ image by Sara Heidinger via UB Arts presence was elusive Collaboratory at times. A co-founder of longtime rap group Koolie High (which later rebranded as Ooze Gang) the rising lyricist has put out a handful of posse cuts, projects, and singles with his rap collective, but Native Sun signifies a new turning point for the rising artist’s capability. "There was a point and time where I was a better artist than I was a man…I could rap my [butt] off, but I ain’t have a dollar in my pocket…

Really over the years balancing and molding myself into the person I’ve become and then being able to display that, that’s really the ultimate…purpose,” explained Gaine$.

After completing her scholarship program with Alvin Ailey Amercan Dance Theatre in New York City, pre-professional ballerina and concert violinist, Amirah Hashimah Muhammad, is now headed to the prestigious Chicago Conservatory of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University in Illinois on a full violin scholarship. She will be enrolling as an honors student in their Bachelor’s of Fine Arts Degree Program, majoring in violin performance.

Amirah will be performing at the Muhammad School of Music's 22nd Annual Celebration of Youth Summer Recital Wednesday, August 18 at 6:30 p.m. at Lincoln Memorial United Methodist Church,641 Masten Avenue (on the corners of Northland, and Main Street).

Amirah Muhammad began her violin studies just under the age of two with her father and founder of Muhammad School of Music (MSOM) Henri Star Muhammad. In addition to Maestro Henri Star, Amirah has worked with such distinguished faculty as Lazara Nelson, Dr. Ayke Agus, Grammy nominated concert violinist Kelly Hall Tompkins, and Dr. Anyango Yarborough Davenport at the Eastman School of Music.

This legislation, and our democracy, has been eroded over the last few decades with various attacks on the monumental 1965 law and Jim Crow 2.0 voter suppression laws popping up in state houses across the country.

Black and Brown communities again are, as they always have been, the primary targets of these deliberate barriers to vote. These anti-democratic attacks on voting rights are causing cracks in the foundation of America. But there is an alternative. We need to strengthen our democracy by passing the For the People Act and prevent future barriers that keep Black and brown people from participating in our democracy.

That has never been more important to Western New Yorkers than now, as violent crimes are spiking in the region. Rising gun violence is most prevalent in Black and brown communities that have bared the brunt of discrimination, the war on drugs, and voter disenfranchisement.

Racial inequity coupled with a severe lack of resources in our communities has played a

part in the rising gun violence in New York. The lack of trust between communities of color and the government has also intensified this crisis, especially after the tragic police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.

Our coalition of Peacemakers across Western New York have worked tirelessly to mediate gang conflicts, build relationships and trust inside our communities, we even have a working relationship with law enforcement officials to promote public safety.

However, we need the federal government to stand up and empower our communities even further -- just as the Voting Rights bill of 1965 once did.

The For the People Act gives us a chance to invest in Black and Brown communities that have been virtually silenced as violence has plagued our neighborhoods. Passing the For The People Act (S1) would not fix all of the issues with our democracy and within our communities, but it would help reverse this tide.

Passing this bill is essential to putting an end to the hundreds of proposed bills to limit the

freedom of Black and Brown people and New Americans to vote. It would limit the influence of wealthy donors and lift up the voices of everyday people in Black and Bown communities and enable them to construct a government that is reflective of their needs for good jobs, affordable housing, high-quality education, and mental health care.

The bill would allow Black and Brown people in our communities to have a say in how we recover from decades of rampant racist policies and shape how they are kept safe during surges of crime.

We encourage Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to use every tool at his disposal to get this For the People Act passed and ensure it is fully intact when it reaches the President’s desk. With the Senate scheduled to come home for summer recess, it is imperative that he not come home without this legislation enacted into law.

ayor Brown is apparently not alone in his Write-In Campaign for reelection. Jaz Miles, a 53-yearold cook and caterer who ran as a Republican against Crystal D. Peoples-Stokes for the Assembly on 2020, says he's also in the mayoral race but not with any party affiliation. If there are any debates, he says he expects to be a part of them and says he's running because he's disappoited with both candidates. Meanwhile, he's got signs out around the city and said he's working on other campaign lierature as well .

AND SPEAKING OF REPUBLICANS...It was reported in last week’s Buffalo News that the local Republican Party said they are ready to back Mayor Brown if he asks for their support.

Republicans backing a Democrat? Holy Republicrats!!(as Malcolm X would call them).

The reality is Mr. Brown “ asks” them every time he disrespects Ms. Walton. Every time he falsely labels the mayoral Primary election winner - who happens to be

a proud Democratic Socialist - a “radical socialist.” Every time he misuses the often misunderstood term “defunding the police” and attributes it to her platform as a scare tactic.

Mr. Brown is campaigning harder and more desperately than he’s done in all his 16 years in office- almost like his life depended on it…

We can only hope that on November 2, this community, as well as right-thinking people across the city, will realize they have nothing to lose by replacing a career politician with a young, progressive, visionary “people-first” champion like India Walton as our next mayor.

An Open Letter to the Business Community Dea editor: In the days since India Walton won the Democratic primary for Mayor of the City of Buffalo, local and national media have reported the hysterical and desperate reactions from members of Buffalo's business and corporate community, who are the greatest benefactors of the Brown administration’s trickle-down economics. Through their outsized influence on the Brown administration, they have extracted public dollars that could have been invested in public education, affordable housing, transportation, infrastructure, and other vital services, in order to line their own pockets instead.

Disgraced, removed school board member, notorious racist, and infamous Buffalo landlord Carl Paladino initially announced his intention to organize and fund a write-in campaign for Byron Brown. We hope the business leaders of our community will reject any such scheming, and support the will of the people who have already made their voices heard through the ballot box.

After 16 years of top-down corporate socialism under the Brown administration, Buffalo remains one of the poorest cities in the nation. It’s time for a new vision for City Hall, which the voters recognized when they elected lifelong Buffalo resident India Walton.

We reject the notion that racist Carl Paladino and those he has gathered have the right to steamroll over the outcome of the Democratic primary. Paladino does not hold the decisionmaking power. The people do, and the people have voted for Democrat India Walton.

U.S. And Its Allies Must Be Exposed As The Creators Of Haiti's Failed State...

T

he recent assassination of Haiti’s president Jovenel Moise has created a great deal of confusion, not only about the crime itself but about the role that the United States might play in that nation. Scant and contradictory information make it difficult to discern who benefits from his killing. Moise was the United States puppet president who refused to step down in February as Haiti’s constitution required, and despite massive protests across the country opposing the continuation of his administration.

Questions about the assassination are relevant but they are not particularly helpful in analyzing the situation. Details about the plot are important but so is understanding the history of Haiti’s relationship with the U.S. and other countries.

That history makes a mockery of any claim that the U.S. could be helpful at this moment.

Haiti was met with animosity from the beginning. Black people successfully leading a revolt made its former enslavers very angry. In 1825 and again in 1838 the French sent warships threatening to conquer Haiti and re-enslave its population unless they were paid millions of francs. So great was the debt that it was not paid off until 1947 and is estimated to total $25 billion . The narrative that Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere should always be followed by an explanation of how the French grand theft left a nation in financial ruin.

The United States has already directly intervened in Haiti. In 1915 Woodrow Wilson sent marines to occupy that country and they remained for another 19 years. That occupation was followed by U.S. puppet governments including the notorious Duvalier family. Every effort that Haitians have made to win sovereignty for themselves has been met with attack.

Bill Clinton sent troops again in 1994 and his successor George W. Bush followed by kidnapping president Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 2004. Nature added to Haiti’s woes with a catastrophic earthquake in 2010 and United Nations so-called peacekeeping forces brought cholera which killed 10,000 people.

Democrats and Republican presidents alike have done great damage to Haiti with election interference. In 2009 secretary of state Hillary Clinton pressured the government to prevent the minimum wage from increasing to 61 cents per hour from a paltry 24 cents. Shortly after the 2010 earthquake she forced puppet president Michel Martelly to undo election results and stay in office against the will of Haitian voters.

This is the history that must be remembered when we are told that Haitian officials are requesting the presence of U.S. troops in the wake of assassination. Even if true, the U.S. can Continued Page 15

2021 City Of Buffalo Mayoral Race-Another Perspective

I

t should be obvious that the 2021 race for Mayor of Buffalo represents more than a change in personalities. It represents, in my opinion, a much needed and overdue refocus of the city's priorities. A reset. A wake-up call for whoever assumes the office of Mayor in 2022.

Mayor Byron Brown was elected and assumed office as Mayor of the City of Buffalo in 2006. The City of Buffalo was the third poorest city in America with populations of over 250,000, according to U.S. Census data from 2007. This figure shows that 28.7% of The local childhood poverty rate is now the second-worst the city's population was living at the poverty among major American cities, based on federal data. level or below, compared with 12.5% nationally. In the United States, the definition of poverty is an individual with income less than $36 per day or a family of four with income less than $72 per day. ... This is calculated from the poverty threshold as set by the U.S. Census Bureau. Poverty is about not having enough money to meet basic needs including food, clothing and shelter. However, poverty is more, much more than just not having enough money.

The poverty rate for all people in Buffalo, regardless of age, is almost more than twice as large as the overall U.S. average. The Census Bureau says that 70,925 of Buffalo's 245,578 residents are living in households classified as poor, yielding an overall local poverty rate of 28.8%. In case anyone would blame the "pandemic' for the high poverty rate, that 28.8% represents Buffalo residents that had an income below the poverty level in 2019, which was 54.7% greater than the poverty level of 13.0% across the entire state of New York.

The US Census Bureau using the American Community Survey (ACS) 5 year estimate/ 2015-2019, states that the number of Persons living in poverty in Buffalo at 30.1%. Buffalo, the second largest city in New York State. The World Population Review found that Buffalo with a 2020 population of 254,290 had an average household income of $55,305 with a poverty rate of 30.06%. That percentage has a face; it is not just a number, it represents 76,440 women, men and children who call the City of Buffalo home. The US Census Bureau also called Buffalo the 8th most segregated city in the country. It found that the Buffalo population is currently declining at a rate of minus 0.20% annually and that its population minus 2.69%, since the most recent census, which recorded a population of 261,310 in 2010.

The US Census Bureau also establishes each year a new series of poverty thresholds. It found that six western New York school districts had poverty levels larger than 30%. This was a newly released figure for 2020. The Buffalo School District has the region's worst poverty problem, with 15,175 of its 39,847 school-age children living below the poverty line. That translates to a youth poverty rate of 38.1%.

You need not be a Sociologist to understand the devastating affect that poverty has on health, education, crime and a Person's basic quality of life. Look around you, see and witness them for yourselves. The "pandemic" served among other things to highlight the results of poverty, racial inequities and disparities in the city of Buffalo. It also highlighted, under the Brown administration, just how wide the gap is between the rich and poor, the haves and the have nots. It is true that Mayor Brown inherited a City already steeped in poverty when he assumed office as Mayor in 2006.

However, the fact is that in all of Mayor Brown's 16 years in office, the poverty level in the City of Buffalo has not changed. Buffalo is still one of the poorest cities with populations over 250, 000 in the United States.

Joann Simmons is a local African American advocate for human rights who has concentrated her efforts mainly in the areas of equity in education for our children and encouraging African Americans to vote in their own best interest regardless of a candidates' political affiliation in an effort to drive home that a "NO Vote" is a vote!

Community Health Center of Buffalo, Inc., Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center Partner to Increase Early Pre-natal Care

T

he Community Health Center of Buffalo, Inc. (CHCB, Inc.) and Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center (NFMMC) have launched a partnership to increase obstetrical care including pre-natal care, labor and delivery services, postpartum visits, and advanced gynecological services to CHCB, Inc. patients visiting the Women’s Health Clinic at the Community Health Center of Niagara (CHCN) located at 2715 Highland, Ave., Niagara Falls, NY. “With the NFMMC and CHCB collaboration, we are hoping to make a difference in the lives of women who need healthcare to change its ongoing state of bias. Our goals are many but shifing control to the patient and delivering safe care is paramount,” said Dr. Hannah Bailey, OB-GYN physician at NFMMC. NFMMC obstetricians will provide services at CHCN every other Tuesday for a four-hour session that would alternate from 8 a.m. to Noon, or from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. (based on initial projections, it is estimated 10 CHCN patients would be seen during each four-hour session). Under this arrangement, a pregnant woman would receive pre-natal care at CHCN for approximately 24-26 weeks before being transferred to NFMMC for the remainder of the pregnancy to enable additional fetal monitoring and ultrasound services.

“We have uncovered thru the work of our NF Healthcare Disparities Task Force the significant disparities among pregnant African American women with lower birth weights, higher rate pre-term births, and lower rates of postpartum visits, as compared to White women,” said Joseph A. Ruffolo, President & CEO, NFMMC. “Our joint partnership with CHCB will address this disparity head on, by providing high quality maternal fetal care in those neighborhoods.”

“Because of racial disparities in maternal health, statistics show that African American women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes,” said LaVonne Ansari, Ph.D, Chief Executive Officer, Community Health Center of Buffalo, Inc. “By partnering with Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center’s obstetrics, we are directly addressing these disparities by removing the obstacle of access to our patients.”

“It is important that all residents in the City of Niagara Falls who are in need of prenatal care and services are able to have access to this care.

Through this partnership these services will now be offered at CHCN in collaboration with NFMMC for those who may otherwise risk going without,” said City of Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino. “We appreciate the collaborative effort of NFMMC and CHCB to bring the opportunity for important healthcare to our community.”

Remembering Veteran Journalist Glen State of Our Youth Virtual Panel Ford, Founder of Black Agenda Report Discussion Set Glen Ford spent more than four decades delivering the news from a Black perspective on a national scale.

Glen Ford, a veteran broadcast, print and digital journalist and brilliant intellectual who hosted the first nationally syndicated Black news interview program on TV before going on to found the Black Agenda Report website, died July 29 according to reports.

He was 71 years old.

Ford’s cause of death was not immediately reported. Several sources announced his death , including Margaret Kimberley, an editor and columnist at Black Agenda Report, the weekly news magazine that offers commentary and analysis from a Black perspective which Ford launched and served as its executive editor To call Ford a career journalist is a vast understatement.

According to his bio on the Black Agenda Report website, Ford was reporting the news live on the radio as early as 11-years-old and went on to enjoy a career in journalism for more than 40 years that included working in the media throughout his adult life. He served as a Capitol Hill, White House and State Department correspondent for the Mutual Black Network. In 1977, he co-founded “America’s Black Forum,” which was the first nationally syndicated Blackoriented program on commercial television.

Haitians are perfectly capable of handling their own affairs. Whenever they take a step toward independence they are quickly subverted. It is bad enough that the United Nations refused to compensate Haiti for the cholera epidemic that it caused, but now they declare who will be the next president , without any input from the Haitian people.

The United States playing any role in Haiti’s future is akin to the fox being left in charge of the henhouse. The assumption that the exploiters can suddenly become helpful is a racist one.

Haitians have been punished ever since 1804 because they dared to resist oppression from white led nations. Every step they take towards true independence has been systematically subverted.

If outsiders do nothing else, they must call attention to Haiti’s history and speak the truth about two hundred years of oppression at the hands of more powerful countries. The narrative of incompetent Black people must be denounced whenever it appears. It is the U.S. and its allies who must be exposed as the creators of a failed state. The Haitian people have suffered at their hands long enough. Anyone claiming to be concerned about their fate should speak in their defense and that means opposing any U.S. intervention.

Assembly House 150 (AH150) is thrilled to announce that recruitment has begun for the Fall 2021 SACRA (Society for the Advancement of Construction Related Arts) term, beginning on Monday, September 20. SACRA is a 12-week paid career training program in the construction trades that provides students with the skills necessary to enter the workforce following graduation.

“The SACRA program is designed for people who enjoy working with their hands while contributing to real community projects. Participants build skills in the construction arts; visit worksites, architectural landmarks, and sites of public art; and gain exposure to career paths through workshops with industry experts,” said Dennis Maher, Assembly House 150 Executive Director.

Through a hands-on project-based curriculum that is tailored to the individual needs of each student, participants gain experience in carpentry, woodworking, and construction. All participants will become skilled using hand and power tools, executing construction math, reading blueprints, and identifying and selecting materials. These lessons are supplemented by workshops lead by industry professionals at the top of their fields, covering topics such as basic framing, cabinet making, stair building, wood windows, stained glass, plaster repair, painting, electrical, with the intention of exposing students to as many opportunities as possible prior to graduation. At the conclusion of the term, SACRA facilitates job placement for the participants, using a growing network of over 70 employers in the Western New York area, enabling industry-wide placements with focuses in fine carpentry, historic restoration, rough carpentry, interior construction, and commercial construction, among others. Recent graduates have gained employment through Hulley Woodworking, Maple Walnut Woodworks, Northwood Historic Restoration Shop, MelCo Construction, Race Sheds, and many others.

No prior experience in construction is necessary to apply.

Most SACRA participants will qualify for full tuition scholarships and receive stipends over the 12 weeks.

Can Your Employer Require You to Get the Vaccine?

The short answer is yes, though a vast majority have not.

Any company is within its legal rights to require employees get vaccinated, barring any conflicting disability or religious belief, according to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

17 Walmart, the nation’s largest private employer, is requiring that a good chunk of its workers — an estimated 1.6 million, including those at its headquarters — receive a vaccine.

The Walt Disney Company, Google, Facebook, Tyson Foods and Uber are some of the other large companies requiring at least some of their employees to be vaccinated.

State governments and the Biden administration have also issued vaccine mandates in their capacity as employers, but not in a way that affects the general public.

As many as seven million federal workers are now required to show proof of vaccination, under new guidelines announced by President Biden in late July. If they do not, they’ll have to follow strict rules on mandatory masking, weekly testing and social distancing. The military said it would follow suit with its employees. -NYT

SNEAKER DRIVE

The @wakandaalliance is having a Back to School Sneaker, Sock, and School Supply Drive. Please donate gently used or new sneakers, new socks, or school supplies to help those in need. Drop them off at King Urban Life Center 938 Genesee Street, Monday Through Friday 9-5pm August 10 through August 14th . Sneakers will be re stored August 21st with plans to hand them out to the community August 28th. This is a great affordable way to be helpful to those in need for back to school. Backpacks and School supplies are welcome for drop off too! The restoration of the gently worn sneakers is top notch. Everything will be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized .
