“Bringing Life to the Stage” -- Sankofa Embarks on Its Second Decade [Rochester, New York] The Sankofa Theatre Festival, Aug. 29 to Sept. 8, celebrates the national bicentennial observance of Frederick Douglass’s birthday with a play imbued by the indomitable spirit of the American social reformer.

Founded in 2017, the Sankofa Theatre Festival since then has grown from one day to two weeks.

Week one of the Sankofa Theatre Festival starts on Thursday, Aug. 29 with featured dramatist Karen Culley of Irondequoit, and her play The Green Book Chronicles. There will be 6:30 p.m. opening night reception followed by the play’s premiere performance.

From 1936 to 1966, the Green Book was an indispensable guide for African American motorists seeking food, gas and lodging on road trips through the segregated South.

Caught between running their family business, the long-established Lilly Inn in Virginia, and providing better opportunities for their children, the Greers try to navigate the impending winds of change in hopes of attaining Douglass’s dream of equality for all.

After the Saturday, Sept. 1 matinee, there is a talk-back with the playwright, director and entire cast.

Kicking off the second week on Sept. 4 is a new component to this year’s festival, an evening of ten-minute plays, with an emphasis on works that are comedic in nature and pertain to some aspect of the African American experience. The "Night of Tens" playwrights are Ibn Shabazz of Buffalo; Karen Culley of Irondequoit; and Reuben J. Tapp, Stephanie Leary, Jacquetta Harris, Gary DeWitt Marshall, all of Rochester.

Sankofa Theatre Festival’s two other full-length productions are on alternating nights.

On Sept. 5 and 7, is The Circle: A Book Club Sisterhood, by Laura A. Thomas of Rochester.

A women’s black literary club finds judging a book by its cover easier said than done as some reveal, and others conceal, their personal struggles and turmoil.

And on Sept. 6 and 8 is, Now & Then, by Grace Flores of Rochester. We’ve heard it said that we are spirits having a human experience. What if eight such spirits have more than one human experience? Cross over and beyond dimensions into the Now & Then.

Services Set for John H. Hackney Home Going services will be held for John H. Hackney on Friday, September 24 in Trinity Baptist Church, 2926 Bailey Avenue. Family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12 noon, after which the service will follow.

A cancer researcher and Deacon at Trinity Baptist, prior to the funeral service he will lie in state at the church on Thursday, from 12 noon to 9 p.m. for visitation from 12 noon to 9 p.m. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

Deacon Hackney made his transition last Wednesday in Buffalo General Hospital. He was 88.

Born and raised in Buffalo, in 1951 he became the second African American student to graduate from the University of Buffalo with a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy.

He went on to earn a master’s degree in business administration at UB. In 1954 he became a lab technician at Roswell Park Memorial Institute and later became a cancer research scientist.

He was a member of Trinity for more than 80 years.

Mr. Hackney served as president of the Deacons Alliance of WNY and was a life member of the NAACP, a member of SCLC , the Black Leadership Forum, and a life member of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity and the Black leadership Forum to name a few.

He is survived by two daughters, LaDonna and Tiffany Williams; two sons, J. Kevin and Eric; eight grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. His wife of 56 years, the former Wanda Smith, passed in 2010.

umble, unassuming; basketball shorts, sneakers, and logo cap-wearing Frank Collins looks like your average brother from the ‘hood.’

His conversation, his air of decisiveness, and attention to detail however, reflects a man gifted with vision and the business savvy to make dreams happen. Born into a farming family in Georgia, Frank knew early on that tending to green acres wasn’t in his future. The eldest of 6, his path to industry greatness began when he was about 15 and worked at Captain D’s, a southern-based seafood restaurant. This led to employment at restaurant giants, that included McDonald’s, Old Country Buffet, and Olive Garden, and ultimately, to where Frank Collins is today, as managing partner of the Texas Roadhouse restaurant, in Cheektowaga, NY. This devout Christian testifies that he honors God for his humble beginnings; the sometimes tedious journey; and the abundance of blessings he receives because of his relentless efforts to achieve excellence in all that he does.

“Every principle in the game of life leads back to God,” he declares.

Self-described as an honest, caring dreamer, Collins has been in the restaurant business for about 35 years.

In 2014, he was chosen as one of the top 20 (out of 450) kitchen managers in the U.S. As the man behind 1 of 14 Texas Roadhouse restaurants based in locations from Central to Western New York, he confidently shares what is needed to be the owner of a successful franchise.

“A strong vision; a solid business plan; commitment and passion; a good product; the enrollment, or buy-in, of others; and constantly sharpening your skills.” He describes his attitude toward his pursuit of excellence as “relentless”; always searching for it and, when found, submerging all that is Frank Collins, into it.

“When I hit my doors, no matter how I feel, there’s something magical that hits my body. I’m completely energized and refocused.”

According to their website, Texas Roadhouse’s goal is to not limit itself to being just a restaurant, but a place where everyone, of all ages, goes to have a great meal, great fun, for a great price. This mission has driven the chain to be named by the American Customer Satisfaction Index’s Restaurant Report 2018 (ACSI) as the best full service restaurant, outpolling Cracker Barrel and Longhorn Steakhouse.

The ever-bustling restaurant can also be described as an entertainment center where families can enjoy line-dancing, riding the ‘bull,’ music, and their unique melodic tribute to guests who are celebrating their birthday, all while enjoying everything from appetizers to desserts, and a wide variety of beverages. The 120-plus Roadhouse employees, or “Roadies” at Collins’ location, are supported by the restaurant’s culture that values families and honors its employees with events such as birthday and holiday celebrations. He believes in developing each individual, to bring out their maximum potential.

“I am absolutely committed to my employees,” says Collins. This same objective applies to Collins’ desire to provide greater support to the community through outreach programs that assist with fundraisers, such as “Dine to Donate,” for youth and religious organizations, and provide mentoring opportunities for young, aspiring entrepreneurs.

Although his “preparation time” to franchise ownership took about 20 years Collins says that his defining moment, when he truly recognized what he was called to do, happened “when I wrote the big check!” Signing that “big check” meant that “preparation had met opportunity,” and positioned his business to begin its journey to achieve his goal of multi-million dollar status.

Of course, Collins’ faith supersedes any hindrance, but he does admit that getting the message out to the Black community has been a challenge.

“There are so many people on the East Side who don’t know about our restaurant,” expressed Collins. He invites the community to his establishment where “scratch-based” cooking is their standard.

He would also like to see more seniors visit during the franchise’s “Early Dine” hours, Mon. – Thurs., from 4 – 6 p.m., where many of the entrees are discounted. Watch the Challenger for upcoming Texas Roadhouse coupons!

Collins’ experience, coupled with his determination to never waiver and maintain consistency, has merited him a wealth of knowledge and wisdom.

His secret to success? In large part, embracing a simple, yet insightful philosophy, “Life is like a seed. You watch it constantly, waiting for it to sprout. Too often, people give up, just before it sprouts. But if you hang in there," he concludes. "It (growth) has to happen! ”

MEET THE GREAT WARRIOR WOMAN OF GUADELKOUOPE WHO FOUGHT AGAINST FRENCH TROOPS IN 1802 WHILE PREGNANT “Live free or die” were Soli-

tude’s last words when she was executed for her involvement in the 1802 slave rebellion in Guadeloupe.

Born in slavery in the plantations of Guadeloupe in 1772, Solitude’s father was a French sailor and her mother was an African woman who was reportedly raped during a voyage on the slave ship.

Slavery was abolished in 1794 in the French colonies due to the Haitian slave revolt. But eight years after the abolition, Napoleon Bonaparte restored slavery in the French colonies and sent about 3,500 troops led

by General Antoine Richepance to Guadeloupe to enforce that decree.

Solitude was freed in the first abolition of 1794, but after Napoleon’s decree, she became a maroon and joined a group of freedom fighters..

They organized as a small army and fought against the French troops. Solitude, though a few months pregnant, joined this fight. She was said to be a fierce and fearless warrior who “pushed herself and her belly into the heart of the battles” at Dole, Trou-aux-chiens, FondBananier, and Capesterre.

Solitude was captured and sentenced to death..But since the child in her womb was to become the property of her slave owner, her execution was rescheduled to the day after the birth. She gave birth on November 28, 1802, and on the morning of the following day, the greatest heroine of the revolution, who was now 30 years, stepped out of jail peacefully

while, according to accounts, maternity’s milk slowly stained her nightshirt.

She was then executed with no one knowing the whereabouts of her child.

The Race For State Attorney General

Leecia Eve is Running to Win!

L

eecia R. Eve, the daughter of former Deputy Speaker of the New York State Assembly Arthur O. Eve and educator and women’s rights activist Constance B. Eve, is running for Attorney General for the State of New York.

In addition to being more than qualified, this beautiful young woman, a former top aide to Hillary Clinton and Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, is endowed with the Eve legacy of community service and “Politics for the People.” It’s in her DNA to fight and to serve as she seeks to win the Democratic Primary.

“For most of my life, I have championed policies to improve our political system,” she stated. “ From the time I was a little girl helping my dad register people to vote to working on gamechanging pieces of federal legislation like the Count Every Vote Act and the Violence Against Women Act, I have fought for real progressive change. As Attorney General, our office will crack down on abuses of power that erode public faith in government, and we will empower New Yorkers with the tools they need to engage in a more open and transparent electoral process.”

Candidate Eve kicked off her statewide campaign in Buffalo in June during a press conference at Erie County Democratic headquarters where she received the endorsement of the Erie County Democratic Party.

At the Buffalo press conference she thanked Erie County Democratic Chairman Jeremy Zellner for his “unwavering commitment and support in the face of political expediency and adversity.” It was Zellner, who in May at the State Convention, bucked Gov. Cuomo’s choice to back Leecia, who faces three primary opponents in the hotly contested race.

In July she was honored by supporters at her parents Jewett Avenue home, where Mrs. Eve, her mother, was also celebrating her birthday .

Even the photographer who took photos of the event, Dorothy “Princess” Wagsaff, chimed in on Leecia’s campaign.

“I was very proud to be in the presence of such great people

like Arthur O. and Constance B. Eve, their highly accomplished daughter Leecia and their oldest son, Arthur (Champ) Eve who is accomplished in his own right,” said Dorothy. “Judging from her credentials and family history, (in my opinion) Leecia Eve is the best candidate for the office of New York State Attorney General and deserves our votes!”

Former Erie County Legislator Betty Jean Grant stated: “Not only does Leecia Eve have the government and legal experiences to become our next Attorney General, she has a deep commitment to public service that she learned around the dinner table from her parents, Arthur and Constance, who did so much for this community over more than a generation.”

-Public Platform – Attorney General candidate Eve last week announced her plan to address election reform, corruption, and campaign finance reform as part of a platform to bolster public integrity in New York State. Eve’s plan will strengthen New York’s voting laws, aggressively target public corruption, replace JCOPE with an independent body, and create a more level playing field for political candidates, among other initiatives.

“New York State has been a progressive leader in ensuring our rights as citizens are protected, from civil rights to the women’s rights movement and the LGBTQ community, among others," she said. " As Attorney General, I will fearlessly and effectively continue in this tradition,” said Leecia Eve. “But when it comes to our voting laws and issues of corruption and campaign finance, we have a long way to go - and that’s on us.”

Study: Breast Feeding Tends to Reduce Cancer in Black Women!

B

reast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in African-American women, who are 41% more likely than White women to die of the disease. Part of the reason for this higher mortality rate is likely because African-American women are more likely to be diagnosed with a more aggressive form of breast cancer. In 2014, a study led by Christine Ambrosone, PhD, Senior Vice President of Population Sciences at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, revealed a way to lower that risk. Now she and her colleagues are working to get the word out to African-American women who are expecting: Protect yourself by breastfeeding your babies.

There are different types of breast cancer, according to whether or not they express the estrogen receptor (ER). In ER-positive breast cancer, estrogen — a hormone — encourages the cancer cells to grow. Having children tends to lower the risk of ERpositive breast cancer — the type that’s more common in White women. But having children also increases the risk of ER-negative breast cancer — the more aggressive type that more often found in Black women.

However, reviewing their own research, as well as research from other institutions, Ambrosone and her team discovered something astonishing: African-American women who breastfed their babies did not have an increased risk of ER-negative breast cancer.

“I was amazed by those findings,” says Dr. Ambrosone. “I thought, Why isn’t this on the front page? This is so important.

If the risk of aggressive breast cancer increases a lot by having kids but goes away if you breastfeed, everybody needs to know that.”

Yet the solution wasn’t as easy as it seemed. Historically, African-American mothers have been less likely than White mothers to breastfeed their babies. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that African-American mothers are 16% less likely to breastfeed.

Dr. Ambrosone and her colleague, Dr. Deborah Erwin, are determined to change that.

Dr. Erwin, Associate Director for Community Outreach and Engagement at Roswell Park, has created an education program for the National Witness Project, that will share the information found in Dr. Ambrosone's research with African-American women. The Witness Project educates medically underserved and African American women about the importance of cancer screening, through stories told by survivors of breast and cervical cancer.

“We took the findings from Dr. Ambrosone’s study and totally reformatted the educational program to focus on breast cancer risk factors for African-American women, and we are encouraging women we reach to educate and support young mothers to breastfeed, so that we may be able to prevent this ER-negative breast cancer,” says Dr. Erwin.

Reverend Eugene L. and Sharon E. Pierce of Cheektowaga celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary with a weekend stay in Toronto. Rev. Pierce and the former Sharon E. Johnson were married June 15, 1958, by Rev. B. C. McCarley, Pastor of the St. John Baptist Church in Buffalo. Rev. Pierce retired as Deputy Superintendent at the Erie County Correctional Facility. He is Director of the Western New York Outreach Ministries; Mrs. Pierce retired as a Nurse’s Aide at the Erie County Home and Infirmary. They have four children, ten grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

At the same time, a pilot study in Buffalo, funded by the National Cancer Institute, is using social media and messaging to encourage pregnant African-American women to breastfeed their babies. “So with the pilot study and the National Witness Project programs, we’re going the whole gamut, from young women to old women, so that the older moms and grandmothers can encourage younger women to breastfeed,” says Dr. Erwin.

Imhotep Gary Byrd Inducted Into The Buffalo Music Hall of Fame Class of 2018

B

uffalo native Gary Imhotep Byrd has been selected to be inducted into the coveted Buffalo Music Hall of Fame Class of 2018.

Gary Byrd’s involvement with music is both as a legendary DJ and as a musician who has collaborated with Stevie Wonder and others. Byrd started his radio career at Buffalo’s WUFO-AM in the 1960s. Discovered and mentored by broadcaster-educator Hank Cameron as a radio prodigy at age 15. As a teen, he integrated Buffalo broadcasting as a radio personality on the general market McLendon station WYSL. Musically, Byrd provided lyrics for the songs “Village Ghetto Land” and “Black Man” on Steve Wonder’s classic “Songs in the Key of Life” album in 1975. His song “The Crown,” recorded as Gary Byrd & the GB Experience (and featuring Wonder), reached No. 6 on the pop charts in England in 1983. He has been a radio host in New York City past 35 years and currently hosts a music/talk program, “Global Beat/Global Black Experience,” on WBAIFM and a talk show on WLIB-AM. Byrd will receive the Industry Award. Other inductees include: Gary Baker, the Buffalo Choral Arts Society, Philip Burke , Fare Trade, Dwane Hall, Ray Hangen, Willie May, The Steam Donkeys, and Chris Trapper.

Update: The Groove Will Remain Closed For Now But Annual Kids Day Event Will Go On Despite a spirited effort by its owners to reopen the Groove Lounge, a popular East Buffalo nite club, it will remain closed at least for now. That was the outcome following a hearing in State Supreme Court last Thursday before Justice Dennis Ward, who said he wanted the Police Department to provide him with records of criminal activity that led to the city shutting the establishment down.

The City shut The Groove down following a shooting outside the bar last month, after the establishment was closed, involving an off-duty Buffalo Police officer and an ex-police officer.

Groove owners say it should have been an internal affairs issue, rather than placing the blame on the business, which employs some 20 people.

Justice Ward allowed the club’s community empowerment program to temporarily reopen due to the fact that backpacks and school supplies are donated annually around this time to students in need.’ The annual kids day event will take place on September 1 from 3-7 p.m.

However he denied the Groove’s attorney’s pleas with the court to allow the club’s restaurant to reopen so that “20 people could have their jobs back and can buy bread and milk for their babies.”

Club owners Laurie Anderson and Marcia Alston filed a lawsuit two days after the club was ordered to immediately shut down.

They also published and distributed a scathing 23-page full color booklet charging that Buffalo Police Commissioner Lockwood and Mayor Brown took the action to cover up what they called the alleged misconduct of a Buffalo Police officer. “Black Businesses Matter too,” they declared.

“We are still in court regarding the closure and yet to discuss the reason for the closure,” coowner Lauri Anderson told The Challenger. “ At this time, City Corporation Counsel is raising an issue with the Licenses, which is baffling to say the least. We've been operating for over the past four years and all of a sudden, there's a License issue. So that's where we are today.”

Joining Hands for Liberation During the month of August, we remember what so many of our Ancestors have said about our liberation. During the month of August, PRISONERS ARE PEOPLE TOO has frequently taken time and space to remember the significance of “Black August” and its relevance today.

“Black August” started in the prisons of California, acknowledging the political and militant struggles of conscious (politicized) African American prisoners and those who were martyred in the process of fighting the prison system. We have commemorated the lives of George and Jonathan Jackson whose lives and deaths fueled the revolutionary spirit of Africans Karima across this nation and around the globe.

When we celebrate the life and work of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey, on the date of his birth, August 17, we recall what he said about freedom: “Liberate the minds of men and ultimately you will liberate the bodies of men.” His vision of African Liberation was a Pan-African view that encompassed the need to eradicate mental slavery first. While “Black August” had its inception in the prisons, it could have been born below deck on a ship in the Middle Passage or in a shack during plantation slavery. Liberation has always been a relentless humanstruggle. In his vision of African Liberation, Garvey said, “I saw before me then, as I do now, a new world of Black people, a nation of sturdy people, making their impress on civilization and causing a new light to dawn upon the human race.”

Garvey reminded us over and over that we should not simply focus on our smaller individual selves. He urged us to

understand ourselves and engage the world in collective ways built on and in the work, strength and struggles of our people. He saw us joining hands and working for the common good of all. He saw the need for us to build a closer kinship and a closer love of self. This Honorable Ancestor has taught us that our liberation will come “not from the will of others to see us rise, but from our own determination to rise, irrespective of what the world thinks.” This is not to deny the need for cooperative relations of mutual respect and mutual benefit, but to stress that we are essentially and ultimately our own liberators.

Inspired by Garvey’s words, political prisoner Jalil Muntaqim (aka Anthony Bottom) published his selected prison writings in 2003 in “We Are Our Own Liberators.” A short film about Jalil will be screened at the next meeting of PRISONERS ARE PEOPLE TOO. After 46 years in prison, Jalil is facing his tenth parole board hearing this month. After nine denials, he remains strong in the belief that his liberation is at hand.

Support for his freedom has come from many who believe that he should be with his family after nearly half a century of imprisonment. Our Circle of Supporters for Reformed Offenders has forwarded letters of support for Jalil’s release.

Dear Editor, I write in reference to a letter addressed to you and printed in last week’s issue regarding my endorsement of judicial candidates. The information shared in the letter was incorrect and most likely written from a misinformed perspective. As an elected official, I make it a priority to be transparent and honest with members of the community. To date I have not endorsed any judicial candidate publicly or privately, nor has any 2018 judicial candidate asked for my endorsement. New Study Reveals Old Fact: Black Male Youth Feel Threatened A new study by researchers from the Department of Sociology at Ohio State University - has rediscovered -- or scientifically verified -- a very old fact of Black life in the USA: Black boys don’t feel safe in white neighborhoods, or in Black neighborhoods that they perceive as poorer than their own Black section of town -- in this case, Columbus, Ohio.

The story produced the usual commentary about Black parents’ practice of schooling their children on how to navigate the geography of racism. The New York Times reminded readers that “the study came at a time of widely publicized incidents in which black children were reported by white people to the police for selling water , mowing the lawn and playing in the yard , selling hot dogs , playing at a pool , and other ordinary activities.”

The overarching truth documented by the survey is that young Black males know they are targeted for harm by whites, and that Black people in other neighborhoods need watching, too.

The sociologists’ report said nothing about how the police factor into young Black male’s fears, although this cohort is well aware that they are the special prey of the boys and girls in blue, of all races. The researchers think Black youth anxieties about traveling in whiter places could have consequences for their health -- a logical conclusion. .
