The Sankofa Evening Of Theatre & Jazz Fest 2016, which features a full-length play the last weekend in August followed by one act plays the first weekend in September, showcases original works by African American playwrights. The festival is produced by MMB Theatre 1 Project.

All performances for this 9th annual festival are 7:30 p.m. at the Multi-use Community Cultural Center (MuCCC), 142 Atlantic Ave., in Rochester's Neighborhood of the Arts.

The Thursday, Aug. 25, Opening Night Performance & Reception admission is $18 in advance and $20 at the door; the full-length play run continues on Friday, Aug. 26 and Saturday, Aug. 27 with shows at $16 in advance and $20 at the door.

The festival's second weekend kicks off Thursday, Sept. 1 with an evening of jazz music. The remaining nights feature one-act plays on Friday, Sept. 2 and Saturday, Sept. 3. Athletic Great Jim Horne Featured

Former UB Basketball Great and Harlem Globetrotter Jim Horne was featured in last week ‘s Buffalo News for his work teaching mostly inner city kids how to play golf for free since 1996 thru the Buffalo Inner City Golf Organization. He also founded the Horne Foundation which helps raise money for equipment and fees.

The foundation, which also emphasizing the importance of education, held its first golf tournament this past Monday at River Oaks Golf Club in Grand Island, where Horne is a member. Hats off to Mr. Horne!

Black Western New York Magazine Debuts New Look Black Western New York Magazine (bwny) debuted an impressive new look with its August special “Men on the Move” issue. Gracing the cover was none other than Mayor Byron Brown.

On August 12 the African Heritage Food Co-Op had its first pickup of fresh produce on Bailey and Kensington Ave. The CoOp currently works with local farmers to bring healthy foods at affordable prices to the East Side of Buffalo.

For $30 (membership fee) members received large boxes of fresh fruit and produce directly from local area farms valued at between $50-$70 . They also have the option of having it delivered free of charge.

The African Heritage Food Co-Op is owned and operated by residents of the City of Buffalo. It is a Black owned enterprise created to combat the food deserts and price gouging inflicted upon our community, explains Alexander Wright , who serves as president of the Food Co-Op During an interview with Channel 7 Digital Report, Wright said that the “last straw” was when he saw an African American woman being disrespected in one of the corner stores.

The community he said, needs to own something together; something sustainable that we can be proud of and build upon.

Their two to three year plan, he said, is to build a cooperative grocery store on the Eastside of Buffalo, employ residents and increase ownership by the actual people in the community.

Ultimately he said, the Co-Op envisions owing its own farm.

DA Candidates to Debate Criminal Justice Issues Amid local and national concerns about law enforcement and its relationship with the community, candidates running for Erie County District Attorney will share their criminal justice philosophies and plans for running the office in a debate at 7 p.m.

The four candidates will answer questions posed by journalists, submitted by audience members and submitted via the Internet at www.facebook.com/babjbuffalo. The forum also will be recorded for broadcast on public access TV in advance of the primary and general elections.

Shirley Chisholm *Hiram Rhodes Revels was the first African American ever elected to the United States Senate. He represented the state of Mississippi from February 1870 to March 1871. *Shirley Chisholm was the first African American woman elected to the House of Representatives. She was elected in 1968 and represented the state of New York.

She broke ground again four years later in 1972 when she was the first major party African-American candidate and the first female candidate for president of the United States She resided in Buffalo after she married Arthur Hardwick, Jr., a former local New York State Assemblyman.

The Black population of the United States in 1870 was 4.8 million; in 2007, the number of black residents of the United States, including those of more than one race, was 40.7 million.

In 1940, Hattie McDaniel was the first African-American performer to win an Academy Award (the film industry`s highest honor) for her portrayal of a loyal slave governess in Gone With the Wind.

In 1992, Dr. Mae Jemison became the first African American woman to go into space aboard the space shuttle Endeavor. During her 8-day mission she worked with U.S. and Japanese researchers, and was a coinvestigator on a bone cell experiment.

POLL: ONLY 2% OF AFRICAN AMERICANS WOULD VOTE FOR TRUMP

D

onald Trump's campaign is still facing a challenge when trying to win over African American voters.

The findings of a recent MSMBC Poll shows Trump getting only 2% of the Black vote; while another posts an even lower one percent support..

The New York Times reported just days ago that the GOP is urging Trump to broaden his outreach to Black voters.

But Trump’s visit to Detroit - a hub of Black America - last week for example, was anything but an outreach.

“He flew into the city on his private plane, got into his sport utility vehicle and motorcaded on highways past several Black neighborhoods before reaching the downtown convention center where he addressed the heavily White Detroit Economic Club.”

The Republican nominee, the Times reports, has not held a single event aimed at Black voters in their communities, shunning the traditional stops at African-American churches, historically Black colleges and barber shops and salons that have long been staples of the presidential campaign trail.

He has also turned down repeated invitations to address gatherings of Black leaders, ignored African-American conservatives in states he needs to win and made numerous inflammatory comments about minorities.

Interviews with Black Republicans and Democrats reveal one reason he is so toxic: He is perhaps the most prominent “birther” in the country, contending in 2011 that President Obama was not born in the United States and leading a charge calling on Mr. Obama to release his birth certificate.

And if that was not troubling enough to Blacks, consider: *Mr. Trump’s call to “Make America Great Again,” can sound to African-American ears as if he is nostalgic for a time before a Black family was in the White House; or “make Ameriaca White Again.” *He initially refused to denounce David Duke, the former Ku Klux Klan leader who has expressed support for Mr. Trump. *During Mr. Trump’s heated rallies, the candidate has encouraged rough treatment of minority protesters, and in June he recognized a black supporter, in a sea of White faces, as “my AfricanAmerican.” *It took almost seven months for the N.A.A.C.P. to get a “no” from the Trump campaign in response to an invitation to speak at the group’s annual convention in July. *In early May, a representative from the National Association of Black Journalists invited Mr. Trump to speak at a convention it was hosting with the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. His campaign told the groups on the day before the convention began that he could not attend. *The National Urban League said it had invited Mr. Trump to speak three times.. He declined. *Trump’s false tweet about the level of crimes committed by Black Americans against Whites is precisely the kind of rhetoric that plays into the worst fears of his overwhelmingly white supporters. He’s been doing this for decades, since he put out full-page ads calling for the death penalty for the five Black boys of the Central Park Five (something he’s never apologized for, even after it emerged that those boys, who spend decades behind bars, were innocent).

Beloved Imam and His Assistant Executed in Broad Daylight on Queens, NY Street

A beloved Imam and his assistant were gunned down execution-style in broad daylight Saturday as they walked home in their traditional robes after prayers at a Queens mosque — and some members of the community believe it was a hate crime.

Community Health Center of Niagara Grand Opening On Saturday, August 20, 2016, the Community Health Center of Niagara (CHCN), located at 2715 Highland Avenue, Niagara Falls, will host its official grand opening. The center operates under the umbrella of the Community Health Center of Buffalo, Inc. a federally qualified health center (FQHC). In addition to Niagara Falls, Buffalo operates health centers in Lockport, Sanborn and Cheektowaga.

CHCN opened its doors on Highland Avenue in June 2015. Since that time Niagara Falls, residents have enjoyed receiving an array of primary care services that include adults, pediatrics, dental care, family planning, radiology and behavioral health. Coming this fall, an in-house blood testing laboratory will be available.

The grand opening ceremonies look to be an outstanding event that will complement its 2nd Annual Fun Day complete with a parade from Lockport Avenue and 11th street to the Center at 2715 Highland Avenue. A SONG FOR BLACK LIVES TAKEN AWAY…

Composer and trumpeter Terence Blanchard’s (above) title track on his most recent album is “Breathless” – for Eric Garner who died at the hands of police officers on Staten Island just over two years ago.

Mr. Garner’s last words, “ I can’t breathe,” became a rallying cry soon after his death, which was caught on video and viewed by millions…bolstering the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement.

The saying surfaced during a Summer Stage concert by Blanchard at Clove Lakes Park on Staten Island by way of a recorded spoken word recitation by Mr. Blanchard’s son who goes by JRei Oliver.

“Theses black roses grow from cracked Pavements Freshly watered with the tears of the Voiceless As we’ll emit a muted scream to the Heavens: We. Can’t. Breathe.”

During a long, hard season of activist urgency in Black popular music - among artists like Kendrick Lamar, D’Angelo and Beyonce – jazz has by no means lagged behind. Mr. Blanchard’s album, released on Blue Note last year, is just one recent statement of many driven by indignation the push for justice and the urge to bear witness. –NYT

The Need to Develop a New Plan Honoring Our Elders decided to do Part 2 of the article on honoring and respecting for Our Liberation our elders as part of strengthening our families. The last ar-

H

istorically there has always been tension between the activists and those who work inside the system.

There was tension between Dubois and Washington, tension between the H. Rap Brown and Dr. King and now we see tension between Black Lives Matter and traditional civil rights organizations. First, tension is not bad because it makes both sides re-examine their positions, strategies and achievements.

However, the tension becomes destructive when it drives a wedge between Black people as opposed to vigorous dialogue about the condition of our people.

One of the things that traditionalist civil rights leaders say is “we get things done.”

There is no question that the civil rights organizations have accomplished great victories for Black people as it regards to public accommodations, voting rights and affirmative action. These victories especially as it relates to voting rights have enabled Black PASTOR GEORGE America to increase its perceived political NICHOLAS power. I use the term perceived because the increase in Black elected officials has not necessarily translated into the enhancement of quality of life for poor Black people. I would argue there is a connection to the civil rights movement and Black elected officials and I would lump them together into the traditionalist category. Therefore both groups claim their legitimacy of leadership under the mantle of “we get things done.” Yes, Black elected officials have been able to work within the system to accomplish some things. However, the new era of Black activists are smartly asking, “yes you can get things done, but for who?”

While I respect and celebrate the past accomplishments of the traditional civil rights leaders as well as Black elected officials, I think it is fair to engage in a critique about who is benefitting from this “we get things done” argument.

It is interesting to see most mainline civil rights and political leaders line up with the candidacy of Hillary Clinton. One of the main arguments is that, you guessed it, “she can get things done.” And there is no questions that Hillary Clinton and the Democratic machine can and will get things done. However, it is not clear to me who is going to benefit from the things that are going to get done.

Western New York is a classic example of how getting things done does not always benefit Black people. Democratic leadership constantly champions the accomplishment of the renaissance of Western New York. They speak with great pride that this is proof of how the partnership of federal government under the leadership of President Obama, state government under the leadership of Governor Cuomo, County Government under the leadership of County Executive Polacarnz and city government under the leadership of Mayor of Brown can work together as democrats to get things done. Moreover, democrats who are put in position to get things done, because Blacks are the most loyal reliable voting bloc for democrat politicians both White and Black.

However, the get things done model never seems to work to improve quality education for Black children, creating economic opportunities for Black businesses, safe streets in Black communities, elimination of race-based health disparities, creating quality affordable housing in Black neighborhoods or keeping people like Tamir Rice, Sandra Bland or Philando Castile safe from police assaults.

So instead of chastising the Black Lives Matter movement and other activists for not being able to “get things done”, let’s evaluate what is really being done for our people. Recent unemployment numbers for the region show that unemployment has dropped to 4.5%, however the rate in the African-American community it still 4x higher at around 17%. ticle highlighted a brave military man named Mr. Bill Webb who served as a Tuskegee Airman in World War II. He resides here in Buffalo and is 91 years wise. It was a joy to interview him and to introduce him to the next generation. It is so important to seek out and honor the elders in our families and in our communities. Their wisdom and strength of character is essential right now. We only need to glance at recent headlines to see the desperate, difficult times we face. But think about it, our elders have been through so much, they have experienced many tough times. Their perspective is invaluable. You might say, "But they have not walked through exactly what we see in our current news reports!" Actually history KATIE has a way of repeating itself. We learn lesHARROD sons from what we have been through. Then we pass those lessons on to the next generation...if we would only listen; we would not have to "Re-invent the Wheel!" Lets make sure to teach our young children to honor our elders as this brings many Blessings to our families, (see Deuteronomy 5:16...Honor your Father and your Mother....that your days may be prolonged and that it may go well with you in the land.....). That is the first commandment In the Bible...with a promise!

As an Attorney, I have had so many opportunities to meet leaders and outstanding Elders in our Western New York community. In this Article I want to highlight an Elder who was the first Black Woman Captain in the Buffalo Police Department.

She was promoted to the rank of Captain and in 1989 became Commander of a Precinct. Her name is Ms. Marian Bass, I call her Captain Bass. What a wealth of experience and wisdom she carries. Let me try to give you some background about her that will inspire you and your children. An article from Uncrowned Community Builders states the following, "Marian Bass, a retired Captain of the Buffalo Police was a trailblazer for women in law enforcement... she is the only woman certified in Western New York as a candidate for Inspector of Police (the highest civil service rank in law enforcement), and the only woman in Western New York to have Commanded a Police Precinct."

This is just a very small portion of Captain Bass' many accomplishments. She is known for speaking to young people and encouraging them to do their very best. She has earned four degrees of Higher Education including a Masters and a Paralegal degree from Canisius College.

Captain Bass is also an active member of Bethel AME Church.

Here are a few examples and suggestions for honoring the Elders in our families and community.

1) Seek out the Grandparents and even Great Grandparents in your family and community. Ask them questions about their life and faith.

2) Stop and Speak to the Elders you meet. Introduce your children so they will have a positive reaction to our Older family members and friends.

3) Demonstrate kindness and extend care to those elderly ones around us. We have taken cookies to our older neighbors, written notes to grand parents and sat with our children to receive wise advise from our Elders.

The DA’s Race Matters We Endorse John Flynn for Erie County District Attorney

O

n Tuesday, September 13, Primary Election Day, voters will go to the polls to elect the next Erie County District Attorney.

At a time when the criminal justice system is experiencing growing complaints of racial injustice and excessive use of force cases by police, what is sorely needed is a DA’s office marked by decency, transparency and a basic, uncompromising sense of fairness and justice.

There is a huge disconnect between police and the African American Community.

Erie County and the City of Buffalo needs a person who is not only qualified to rid the DA’s office of the prosecutorial and political cronyism , arrogance and unchecked power that marked the administration of former DA Frank Sedita; but who possesses the collaborative skill and sensitivity to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the African American community.

We believe that person is Democratic endorsed candidate, Attorney John Flynn. And we join a host of right-thinking, religious, civic and legal representatives from this community, in urging our readers to cast their vote for him on Primary Election Day. Mr. Flynn has the qualifications, experience, the vision and equally as important, the desire, to make a real difference and usher in tangible change.

There is a saying in the Black community, that there is no justice in the courts - “just us.”

Given the disproportionate number of people of color and the economically disadvantaged in the criminal justice system, the role the office of District Attorney plays in the lives of defendants, their families and the community they serve, is extremely significant.

“The role of prosecutor is due justice for people who have committed crimes and for victims of crime. That includes dismissing cases when they learn that the crime they thought was committed by an individual, did not occur. The just thing is to hold people only accountable for what they did, and only what they did. Sometimes prosecutors try to win and not get justice.”

Uplifting Veterans and Community is Goal of Newly Formed AMVETS Post

T

he installation of the newest AMVETS Post #1925 was held on Saturday August 13.

The Post, which was founded in April of this year, was presented with its charter at ceremonies at the AMVETS Medallion Post #13 on Review Street. The event also included the installation of officers.

The newly installed officers include Davin L. Adams, Commander; Paul Kinsey, 1st Vice Commander; Lorraine Loggins, Adjutant ; Peter Cameron, Provost Marshall and Benjamin Cashaw, Chaplain/Financial Officer.

Post Commander Adams said he and his colleagues are looking forward to “uplifting our communities, our vets and our most prized possession, the children.” Plans to

about who can get things done, but let’s come together and agree on what needs to be done. I would argue it is not about making sure certain people get elected to office, but our purpose is much greater. It is about coming together to develop a community agenda that will elevate the masses as oppose to promoting the insiders.

A careful study of history teaches us that Dubois made Washington better and the militants made the civil rights leaders stronger. Today if we are able to harness the uncompromising principled energy of the new generation of activists with the wisdom, experience and access to power of the traditional leaders we can finally develop a plan for our liberation. This can only happen if we have a shared vision of what it means “to get things done”. As Martin needed Malcolm, the traditionalists need the activists for the benefit of our people. The development of a master plan for the redevelopment of the east side of city of Buffalo offers an opportunity for all of us to come together and get things done for our people. I am pessimistic about the capacity and desire of the system to get anything done for our people.

However I am filled with matchless optimism about the ability of our people to come together to get the needed things done for ourselves, but we must unite.

side the box,” Kinsey said he wants to “do what other posts aren’t doing….I want to raise the bar, take it to the next level” he said in reference to recruitment efforts. Some of those recruitment plans will be announced soon.

Another primary goal he said, is to assist in securing a building for the new Post which is currently operating out of the Fruitbelt Coalition offices at 150 Maple Street.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that sealed proposals for the Erie County Sewer District No. 5 Contract No. 22 will be received by the Commissioner of the Erie County Department of Environment and Planning on Wednesday, September 7, 2016 until 2:00 P.M., local time, at 95 Franklin Street, Room 1034, Buffalo, New York, 14202, at which time they will be publicly opened and read aloud in Room 1004.

The contract work is located at the Eastern Hills Pump Station, 4455 Transit Road, Clarence, New York, 14031. Work includes, but is not limited to, removal of the existing pumps, control panel, and ancillary equipment, installation of two new submersible pumps, a control panel and ancillary equipment (pumps, control panel, guide rails, and seating elbows to be provided by others), structural modifications to the wet well, electrical service upgrades, and bypass pumping.

Bidders are advised that a prebid meeting for the construction of this project is scheduled for August 24th 2016 at 1:00 PM at the office of Wendel, Centerpointe Corporate Park, 375 Essjay Road, Suite 200, Williamsville, New York 14221. A site visit to the Eastern Hills Pump Station will immediately follow the meeting.

Plans are on file and may be examined at the office of the Erie County Department of Environment and Planning, 10th Floor, 95 Franklin Street, Buffalo, New York 14202. The deposit for each set of contract documents shall be $100.00 in the form of two checks or money orders, each in the amount of one-half the deposit, and made payable to the Erie County Comptroller. The envelope containing the bid must be sealed, addressed to the Erie County Commissioner of Environment and Planning and must be clearly and correctly designated as “Erie County Sewer District No. 5, Contract No. 22, Eastern Hills Pump Station Upgrades.” Bidders submitting a bid for more than one contract must do so in separately sealed envelopes for each contract. Any envelope containing more than one bid will be considered an improper bid and not opened. Any bids not delivered in person shall be mailed to the Erie County Commissioner of Environment and Planning, 95 Franklin Street, Room 1034, Buffalo, New York 14202, and received prior to the time set for the bid opening.

Any bidder returning such plans and specifications in good condition within thirty (30) days following the award of the contract or the rejection of bids will be refunded the full amount of the deposit. Nonbidders will be refunded one-half the deposit. Any bidder requesting more than one (1) set of plans and specifications may purchase the excess, but it is understood that they are not returnable. No refund will be made for documents returned after the thirty-day period.

Erie County Sewer District No. 5 is an exempt organization under the Tax Law, and is exempt from payment of Sales and Compensating Use Taxes which are to be incorporated into the project and which are to be separately sold by

the Contractors to the Owner prior to incorporation into the project, pursuant to the provisions of the contract. These taxes are not to be included in the bid. Sales tax will be due on all materials purchased by a Contractor which are either “consumable” or rental property used by the Contractor in connection with the construction or repair.

Each proposal must be accompanied by a certified check payable to the Erie County Comptroller or by a bid bond having a surety thereon from a surety company acceptable to the County Attorney, in an amount not less than five percent (5%) of the total base bid, as surety for execution of the contract.

The successful bidder will be required to furnish Payment and Performance Bond, each in an amount equal to 100 percent of the contract award.

Attention of the bidder is called particularly to requirements with respect to conditions of employment to be observed, minimum wages rates to be paid under the contract, Affirmative Action requirements for Equal Employment Opportunity, along with the Minority Business Enterprise Utilization Commitment. Bidders are also advised that Part “A” of the Erie county Minority Business Enterprise/Women’s Business Enterprise Utilization Report be submitted with the bid or no later than three (3) business days after the bid opening.

The attention of the bidder is called particularly to the provisions of Erie County Local Law No. 2-2006, known as the “Erie County Workforce Development and Diversification New York State Certified Worker Training Program”, to have in place and provide written proof at the time of bid, a New York State Certified Worker Training Program, either intentional to the Contractor or Subcontractor and/or through an organization servicing several Contractors or Subcontractors, appropriate for the type and scope of work to be performed. In the alternative, Rules and Regulations pertaining to Local Law No. 2-2006 allows the Bidder to provide a statement as to the inapplicability, lack of career opportunities, and/or that the magnitude of the contract would make apprentices impractical. The attention of the bidder is called to the provisions of Article 5A of the General Municipal Law which requires the bidder to execute a certificate of non-collusion and to conform with the other provisions of Article 5A outlined in the specifications. Legislator MillerWilliams Announces Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) is Available First District Erie County Legislator Barbara MillerWilliams (D-Buffalo) announces that the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) furnace clean and tune funding is available for Erie County homeowners.

The program is set to close on November 2, 2016, or earlier, if funding is exhausted. Eligible households will receive free inspection, cleaning and tuning of heating equipment (furnace, boiler, chimney, etc.). A free carbon monoxide detector and programmable thermostat will also be installed if homeowners do not currently have one installed.

Furnace clean and tune applications are available at the HEAP office at 291 Pearl Street, Buffalo, 8am4pm. Applications will also be accepted by mail.

Clients may call the HEAP application request line at 858-1969 for an application packet.

A CELEBRATION OF LOVE!

Friends and family came from far and near to celebrate the 85th birthday of our beloved OraLee McQuiller Lewis Delgado Khalid during a celebration of love at the Pratt Willert Center recently. Perhaps best known for her work as Executive director of the Langston Hughes Institute, Mrs. Delgado-Khalid’s family played a major role in establishing the Nation of Islam in Buffalo. Her brother Bobby McQuiller ,was a trainer for Muhammad Ali and her home and the home of her parents was the home-away-from-home for Minister Malcolm X during the establishment of a temple in the City of Buffalo. Happy Birthday Queen Ora-Lee!
