Eastman School to Dedicate George T. Walker Creation of New Center of Equity and Inclusion to George T. Walker

astman School of Music, of the University of Rochester, is proud to announce the creation of a new Center of Equity and Inclusion, now formally named and dedicated to the late George Walker, one of Eastman’s most distinguished alumni.

The George Walker Center for Equity and Inclusion in Music will open and have a formal dedication on Saturday, April 16 at 10:00AM in Sproull Atrium, Miller Center.

The dedication will inGeorge Walker clude remarks by University of Rochester President Sarah Mangelsdorf; Jamal J. Rossi, Joan and Martin Messinger Dean at Eastman; Ian and Gregory Walker, sons of George Walker, and others. The ceremony will be followed by a walkthrough of the new Center, as well as a Morning Chamber Music concert, dedicated to the music of George Walker, at 11 AM in Hatch Recital Hall.

George Walker, a composer who broke barriers during a long and distinguished career, including, in 1996, becoming the first Black composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for music.

he Board of Directors and hosts of volunteers of Juneteenth Festival, Inc. are excitedly preparing to bring the long-awaited, live and in living color event back to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, for the 47th consecutive Juneteenth Festival of Buffalo June 18-19 So get ready for the food, festivities, fun, and friends you haven’t seen, in a while!

This year’s theme, “Juneteenth of Buffalo: We Are Black History…Since 1976” will be the foundation of our 2022 message as we recognize our history and journey, from Africa to America, and celebrate our accomplishments and culture, on the weekend of the national holiday of Juneteenth, Saturday, June 18 and Sunday, June 19, 2022. Stay tuned for updates on festival-related events, including Sankofa Days and the Maafa Memorial.

Buffalo’s Juneteenth Festival, originated in 1976, on Jefferson Ave., and has been a constant presence in the community, even as a virtual event, through the Covid-19 pandemic.

Juneteenth was declared a national holiday, by President Joseph Biden, in June 2021.

We are proud to be part of this renewed awakening to all that is the Black experience in America, and we’ll continue to demonstrate our commitment to this process by delivering a quality event, as we return to the Frederick Law Olmsted designed, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, on the first “teen” weekend of June.

t would be impossible to count all the lives that Yvonne James Brown touched along her amazing earthly Journey.

A queen in every sense of the word, Yvonne made her transition on April 5. A wake will be held at Thomas T. Edwards Funeral Home, 995 Genesee Street on Friday, April 15 from 5-7 p.m. The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 16 at St. John’s Baptist Church, 184 Goodell St. from 11 a.m. to 12 noon, where a Celebration of Life will immediately follow.

In memory of her life and accomplishments, her family announces the Yvonne James-Brown Arts Scholarship Award for Academics, Resilience, Talent and Spirit (A.R.T.S.). The Yvonne James-Brown A.R.T.S. Scholarship Award will be presented to one student in the graduating class at the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts in Buffalo, NY who best embodies the values of intentionality, awareness and purpose, with which Yvonne lived her life. The following are excepts from a tribute to Yvonne that was lovingly submitted by her husband, GregoryL. Brown Esq. Yvonne James-Brown came straight out the Bronx, NY, in 1967, as a bright 17 year-old freshman at the University of Buffalo, the first in her family to attend college. She attended William Taft High School, where she excelled in both sports and academics. From her first day at UB, Yvonne connected with several other NYC counterparts and a couple of locals, with whom she would go on to share lifelong friendship and sisterhood. It all began with their shared interest in dance and a previous background in the arts, which they imported to

The Great Migration

The Great Migration was the mass movement of about five million southern Blacks to the north and west between 1915 and 1960.

During the initial wave the majority of migrants moved to major northern cities such as Chicago, Illinois, Detroit, Michigan, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and New York, New York. By World War II the migrants continued to move North but many of them headed west to Los Angeles, Oakland, San Francisco, California, Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington.

The first large movement of Blacks occurred during World War I, when 454,000 Black southerners moved north. In the 1920s, another 800,000 Blacks left the south, followed by 398,000 Blacks in the 1930s. Between 1940 and 1960 over 3,348,000 Blacks left the south for northern and western cities.

In additional to migrating for job opportunities, blacks also moved north in order to escape the oppressive conditions of the south. Some of the main social factors for migration included lynching, an unfair legal system, inequality in education, and denial of suffrage.

3 Daily Habits to Avoid Sickness, Disease, and Premature Death “You will never change your life until you change something you do daily”

C

hronic disease does not run-in families; diets and lifestyles do. Sickness, disease, and premature death can be prevented and reversed. Once you decide to become your own health advocate and become a self-healer, your life can change. You will experience better health, healing, and long life by incorporating these 3 daily habits into your life.

1. Drink Water Water is the body’s most essential nutrient. The human body is comprised of about 75% water and about 80% of the human brain is water. The human body can go about three weeks without food but cannot survive more than three days without water. No other liquid can sustain your body like water. The biggest issue with many of us is that we are chronically dehydrated. We aren’t aging and getting older, we are shriveling up due to dehydration. The body is being depleted and deprived of its most necessary nutrient, water. Take your body weight, divide it in half and that is how many ounces of water you should drink daily. You should drink this amount of water every single day. Your body has no need for milk, juice, soda/pop, or any other beverage that is marketed to you as a substitute for water. These beverages should be eliminated from the diet as much as possible. Water should ALWAYS be your beverage of choice. No other beverage will produce the healing benefits of water.

2. Sleep The body needs sleep more than it needs food. After three days of insufficient sleep, the body begins to show the signs of sleep deprivation. How long can we survive without food? 3 weeks! Adequate sleep improves learning, memory, decision making, and critical thinking skills. Your body goes into recovery and healing mode, repairing muscles, organs, and cells while you sleep. The immune system is dependent on sleep, as certain antibodies are produced during sleep. Lack of sleep can make you biologically older and results in a body and mind wired for stress. You are also at an increased risk of weight gain and chronic disease. For adults aged 18-64, the recommendation is 7-9 hours of sleep per night. For adults 65 or more, the recommendation is 7-8 hours per night.

3. Intermittent Fasting One of the biggest myths is that we need to eat six small meals every 2-3 hours to be healthy. We are told that breakfast, first thing in the morning is the most important meal of the day. This is false. You do not need to eat six small meals a day. In fact, breakfast, first thing in the morning is one of the worst things you can do to your body. From the hours of 4a.m.-12p.m., the body is in a state of cleansing. Eating breakfast during these hours interrupts this cleansing process. Intermittent Fasting is a fundamental principle of nature. It has an enduring, permanent value to our health and healing. The benefit of fasting is unarguable. A daily 17 hour fast from the hours of 7p.m. umtil noon the following day is the goal. You will experience weight management, regulation of blood pressure, blood sugar, and improved cognitive function. You will slow down the aging process and allow the body’s innate detox and cleansing mechanisms to eliminate toxins, waste, and damaged and defective cells and DNA from the body.

Have You Ever Wanted to Grow Food For Yourself, Your Family, and Build Community? Here’s an Opportunity!

R

esidents in East Buffalo have an exciting opportunity to learn how to grow their own food through the “Seeding East Buffalo” immersion program. A cohort of selected fellows will train with an experienced East Buffalo grower to learn how to grow their own food. Selected candidates will also receive a $350 grant award. By the end of the program, selected fellows will have the knowledge they need to grow food at home, to help their neighbors with gardening, and to advocate for a better East Buffalo.

What will Fellows do and When? The Seeding East Buffalo program will begin in May 2022. Fellows will have the opportunity to learn about a variety of topics with experienced growers and communiAlexa Wajed harvesting veggies from her ty leaders. Fellows will learn about Black farmers/ Chef Freedom Garden at her home . grower’s relationship to land, agriculture and food systems, and agriculture practices for sustainable soils, and the local growing season. Fellows will receive hands-on training focused on growing food from seeds and seedlings, seed saving, organic pesticide management, and harvesting. Fellows will also have the opportunity to learn how to shape policy to better serve communities.

Fellows will train weekly on a farm in East Buffalo during the 2022 growing season (additionally, a welcome workshop and a graduation celebration will be held at an off-farm site).

The program will begin in May, 2022.

Who is Eligible? Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and reside in one of these Buffalo neighborhoods: Masten Park, Fruit Belt, Pratt-Willert, Broadway Fillmore, MLK Park, Delavan Grider, Kensington-Bailey. No gardening experience is required!

Wellness Walk in Niagara Falls Will Focus on Community Connection, Health The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area (NFNHA) and Create a Healthier Niagara Falls Collaborative (CHNFC) are partnering together once again to host Walk With Us, a 5K wellness walk, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 24, beginning at the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center at 825 Depot Ave. West.

The walk offers an opportunity for members of the community to participate in a physical activity that also improves mental health while engaging in social connection. Those interested in participating in the walk can find more information and register at https://www. healthierniagarafalls.org/events/walk-with-us-2022 The walk has two routes, the first of which is 1.5 miles and follows the Niagara Gorge Trail toward Whirlpool State Park where there are restrooms. The second route is about 3 miles total and goes to Devil’s Hole and back to the Heritage Center.

Walk With Us was created in 2021, and was designed as a way to combat the isolation and sedentary lifestyle many people had experienced due to the pandemic. The event had a turnout of a few hundred participants of all ages and abilities, as it is accessible for everyone in the community.

New Hope Kicks Off Film Series on Good Friday With “Risen” New Hope Baptist Church, 2090 Genesee Street, under the leadership of Pastor Herschel Chapman, Jr., invites everyone to take part in it’s 2022 film series starting on Good Friday, april 15 with the showing of “Risen” at 12 noon. Doors open at 11:30 a.m.

The movie “Risen,” is a 2016 American a biblical drama film that takes a unique look at the resurrection story; an outstanding, haunting faith-based film brilliantly scripted.

Following on May 6 at 7 p.m. the film “Summer of Soul” or (when the revolution could not be televised) directed by filmmaker Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson. ”Summer of Soul” won Best Documentary Feature at the Oscars. It is a powerful and transporting documentary, part music and part historical record, created around an epic event that celebrated Black History, culture and fashion. Artists such as Stevie Wonder Sly and the Family Stone, Nina Simone, Mahalia Jackson, B.B. King just to name a few, took to the stage to perform to an audience of thousands at the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival.

Mary Watson-Pointer Capers One of Buffalo’s Oldest Centenarians Celebrates 103rd Birthday!

L

ast Wednesday one of Buffalo’s oldest centenarians, Mary Watson Pointer-Capers, celebrated her 103rd birthday!

Mrs. Pointer-Capers was the youngest of 12 siblings born to Charlie and Francis Watson on April 6, 1919, in Blytheville, Arkansas.

She was raised on a farm, and at an early age she also worked on the farm. She married Sam Pointer, and to that union seven children were born. After his death in 1946, Mary raised 7 children with the help of her parents, and older siblings. She migrated to Buffalo in 1948 with her seven children seeking a better life.

Mary worked hard as a single mother and became employed by the family of a prominent judge as a cook and nanny, before becoming employed at The Buffalo Steel Plant. Mary raised her seven children, and one goddaughter. She is described by her family as a hard-working, no-nonsense person who would let you know what was on her mind, while also being very caring, and grateful. She was an excellent cook, who passed down her cooking skills to all of her children. Mary was a woman of modest means who also loved to shop for shoes.

Later in her life, she met and married Sonny Capers and became a member of The Linwood Church of God in Christ.

At the age of 103 Mary Watson Pointer Capers family gives God the honor and glory for blessing them with their living matriarch of six generations of family members, that includes seven children: two sons, Eddie Pointer, Sam Pointer Jr.; 5 daughters, Mary Pointer Garner, Thelma Pointer Clark, Ruby Pointer Wiggins, Geraldine Pointer, Alice Pointer Kirk; Goddaughter, Mae Willie Davis; special niece Mrs. Geneva Givens ( Mary has outlived three children, Eddie, Sam, Ruby, and a goddaughter, Mae. She has 40 grandchildren, 93 great grandchildren, 165 great great grandchildren, and 14 great, great, great, grandchildren,. Most live in the Buffalo area.

Mary was cared for with love in the home of her daughter, Ruby Wiggins until 2020. Today she is a resident at St. Catherine Laboure Health Care Center, and is described as a very active resident, who is well-known to the staff.

Northland’s Vision Coming to Fruition: Mekhi Yearwood – Success Story

ineteen-year old Mekhi Yearwood is on his way to success after getting employed by National Grid with the help of the Northland Workforce Training Center’s electrical program.

Just under seven years ago, in 2015, the plans for a career training center focused on the energy and manufacturing sectors on Buffalo’s East Side were announced.

Fast forward to December of 2021 – that same structure, trademarked the “Northland Workforce Training Center” – gave rise to 19-year old graduate Mekhi Yearwood, who has already been employed and is well on his way to success.

Shortly before his official graduation from Northland’s electrical program, Yearwood received a very exciting phone call – from National Grid, a multinational electricity and gas utility company.

Yearwood jumped at the opportunity and said that his experience at Northland helped prepare him for the position – despite being the youngest in National Grid’s underground cable department.

A graduate from McKinley vocational high school, Yearwood was exposed to electrical courses early through the many trade experiences they offered. His success during those years led him to a “P-TECH” scholarship, which offered a full ride to Alfred State at Northland.

Yearwood said that Northland teaches you skills for life, and there’s a lot of money to be made in trades.

The potential for a trade education is also high because of the demographic – most employed in trades today are older and looking to retire. This means in the near future, there will be a lot of vacancies that need filled.

The trade experience is valuable to Yearwood, but so are the mentors – many of which were electricians like him.

The mentors at Northland taught Yearwood valuable lessons.

“One lesson that stuck with me, they told me take pride in your work, it represents you. That job reflects who you are.”

Both Yearwood and his teachers saw a lot of growth since his start in the program. The more they imparted their lessons on him, the more potential he saw in himself and his future career.

“You could make a lot of money with little to no debt to repay,” Yearwood said, largely due to the low cost of tuition compared to traditional colleges, but also Northland’s programs to help their trainees pay off their debt.

One thing is for sure, there is great money to be made in the industry, but there is potential danger.

Yearwood said they work with over twenty-thousand volts underground, but despite the dangers, it wouldn’t stop him. “I never felt afraid while working. You respect the electricity,” he said.

The team also makes sure safety is a priority and everyone goes home safely.

Yearwood is grateful for his mother putting him in McKinley vocational school, where he was exposed to electrical trades at just thirteen. Without that exposure, he says he may not know anything about Northland today.

“My loved ones are what keep me going,” Yearwood said.

“They are rooting for me... and they see big things in my life.”

“On those days I feel like I can’t do it, I think of all the people who got me here and are rooting for me.”

Times Reports A “Weak Spot” Among Black Voters for Gov. Hochul A March 29 story in the New York Times reported that polls show a weak spot among Black voters in support for Gov. Kathy Hochul.

The Times reports:

The poll also found that if Cuomo stayed out of the race, Ms. Hochul led a Black candidate, the New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams - by a margin of 39 percent to 17 percent. In a February poll she trailed Mr. Williams.

The Times: “Williams has criticized Ms. Hochul on her

remarks about Mr. Bragg; her affordable housing proposal, which he deemed to be too modest; and her support for Jay Jacobs, the chair of the state Democratic Party, who drew fire in October when he compared an endorsement for India Walton, then the democratic nominee for mayor of Buffalo, to one for David Duke a neo-Nazi.

Ms. Hochul called Mr. Jacobs’s remarks “very disturbing” but did not call for his ouster.”

Brian A. Benjamin, the Black Democratic state senator from Harlem who Ms. Hochul named as her lieutenant governor, said in the article that his relationship with Ms. Hochul

“demonstrated her interest in issues confronting the Black voter.”

Mr. Benjamin was arrested on charges related to a campaign finance fraud investigation on Tuesday. He has since resigned and is pleading not guilty.

“A Siena College poll released March 28 found that if Ms. Hochul’s predecessor, former Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, entered the primary race, he would lead her among Black voters by 50 percent to 23 percent, although she leads him overall along registered Democrats by eight points, the poll found.”

Citing hints of trouble in the camp, The Times cites: •Participants in a rally in Harlem recently criticized the governor for her proposal to change the Raise the Age statue to make it easier for teenagers to be prosecuted in adult criminal court for gun possession.

They noted that young Black people would likely be most affected by the shift.

•Cuomo still has strong ties to Black leaders and used the pulpit of a Black church in Brooklyn to deliver his first public speech since resigning.

•Both Rev. Calvin O. Butts, the pastor of Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem and civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton have voiced concerns about Gov. Hochul’s posture toward District Attorney Alvin Bragg. Hochul has since sightly changed her tune about Bragg.

Community Benefits Agreement Tied to New Stadium Deal

GERALDINE HORTON ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA ECONOMIC IMPACT:$2.1 MILLION

ast week I expanded on the history of the County negotiating previous Bill's lease agreements and the outline of the new agreement. This week I will pick up with my local advocacy for my CBA blueprint proposal which began last September. I wanted a separate negotiating committee made up of the county, state, team owners to work with community leaders on identifying a CBA that will go above and beyond a standard community agreement. I believe that for every public dollar that Erie County spends, another dollar must be invested into the upward mobility of our neighborhoods. This can and should begin with a strong Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) that is negotiated in conjunction with the agreement for a new stadium.

Knowing the clock was ticking, and that a memorandum of understanding (“MOU”) would be presented to the County Legislature for approval once an agreement was reached among the State, County, and the Bills, I reached out to stadium stakeholders, as well as my colleagues in government and began making the case for a CBA. The plan was to ensure that a CBA would be part of any MOU presented to the legislature, with an understanding that the details of it would be ironed out via a separate committee solely focused on finalizing the details. While the CBA is still to be negotiated, we can look to Invest Well Erie for guidance. Invest Well Erie developed out of community conversations about upward mobility and will guide my approach to the final terms of the CBA. I will be focused on delivering an agreement that ensures adequate transportation, administrative sports career mentorship programs, investments in our little leagues, minority vendors and services contracts. Invest Well Erie even goes as far as proposing fiscal support for affordable housing and health equity under the belief that when all the residents of Erie County have their basic life needs prioritized in public dollars, then we all stand a better chance of becoming invested Buffalo Bills patrons.

We have to go beyond the minimum labor and hiring standards required by state law, and insist on an agreement with specific commitments, including better-than-minimum minority and women-owned business participation, unionized labor, funding youth sports programs, and worker and fan public transportation.

I fought hard for a CBA to be included in any Bills contract and I was proud to learn, based on the Memorandum of Understanding that was released, that a CBA will be included as part of the Bills deal.

I thank the Buffalo Bills, Governor Hochul, and County Executive Poloncarz for recognizing the importance of the needs of all Erie County residents being included in this new stadium deal. And I look forward to working with each of them to deliver the most inclusive, equitable community benefits agreement in the County, State, and Nation.

History was made last week when Judge Ketanji Brown- Jackson was appointed as the first African American female to sit on that prestigious court.

This was a great week for women all across this nation and an absolutely great event for Black women and girls in particular. This act by a largely Democratic Senate was the right and honorable thing to do. But what is especially disheartening is that only three Republican senators, Mitt Romney of Utah, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska bothered to join the Democrats, in casting their vote for Judge Jackson.

In terms of local news coverage, I found disturbing the way Judge Jackson's elevation was reported and the low profile placement of her picture in our area's major daily newspaper! One would think that an appointment of such historic magnitude should have generated a larger picture of her and favorable placement on the front page of the newspaper.

It seems that the more we achieve and are elevated through our own hard work, we Black women continue to be dismissed or to be relegated to a less prominent position or ranking when the media finally gets around to recognizing us or giving us the proper respect.

Whole Health is that new approach; one that supports the health and well-being of veteran. It entails a health team that will get to know you as an individual, before planning with you a personalized health plan based on your values, needs and goals. With Whole Health, you’re in total control of your care.

Whole Health encourages veterans to set goals based on what is important to the veteran, also veterans are assisted in reaching set goals with their health team.

Studies have shown that veterans who used the Whole Health Services have reported being able to manage stress better. For veterans who suffer from opioid use as a result of chronic pain, studies show a huge reduction in opioid usage as opposed to those veterans who do not utilize the Whole Health System.

There are other studies and great success stories about pain management, weight loss, improved mental health, and healthy vital signs.

ormer political prisoner Jalil Muntaqim is still not treated as a free man. In this case, the State University of New York at Brockport succumbed to political pressure and moved his in-person appearance online. In this country speech and thought are not as free as we are led to believe.

Last Wednesday, April 6, 2022, long-time freedom fighter and former political prisoner of war, Jalil Muntaqim was set to speak at the State University of New York - Brockport . However, over the past few weeks this event had come under fire by the usual suspects: the police, right wing elected officials and the dependent corporate media apparatus.

Those familiar with the plantation logics that drive U.S. policing are unlikely to be surprised at this latest example of scare tactics, censorship and high drama coming from the internal colonies’ occupation forces . The empty accusations of “anti-Semitism” will likewise read as par for the course, given how regularly this kind of rhetoric is deployed in right-wing attempts to silence dissident voices. What may puzzle even some of the more seasoned readers of copaganda, however, is how desperately those militating against Muntaqim’s upcoming address are attempting to banish one of the terms being used to describe him: former political prisoner.

Perhaps this, too, should come as no surprise. After all, one of the many myths of U.S. exceptionalism is its pathological claim not to hold any political prisoners within its vast, worldleading plantation complex of over two million caged human beings. In fact, it was Jalil Muntaqim who lit the spark that would ultimately cost Andrew Young his position at the UN over 40 years ago when he suggested that a French journalist ask the ambassador at a news conference in Paris if political prisoners existed in the U.S. His reply of “perhaps thousands,” proved too near to reality for imperial comfort and he was relieved of his ambassadorship in short order. Still, the almost religious character of the police and their enablers’ refusal of the term as regards Muntaqim does beg the question, what is a political prisoner?

A Political Prisoner of War is someone detained for their beliefs, color, sex, ethnic origin, language, or religious creed, regardless of whether the individual has advocated the use of

violence and includes those detained without trial or prosecuted as a form of persecution. To further politicize this definition, it is one whose imprisonment is directly based upon a conscious effort to resist against continued racist genocide and colonialism. This is and has continued to be the struggle of those who rose to these challenges in the context of the Black LibJalil Muntaqim eration Movement.

Jalil Muntaqim has remained a target of the state since the unlawful COINTELPRO efforts of J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI ensured that he would not set foot on “free” U.S. soil until his elder years back when he was still in his teens. We can see this clearly in the countless acts of repression from his capture back in 1971 up to the present moment: from the tragicomically bad TV movie aired on CBS in 1985, “Badge of the Assassin”, in which Muntaqim and his comrades are painted as cartoonish, blaxploitation-style gangsters, to the 11 parole board denials despite an undeniable record of positive influence and service while inside, to the attempts at having him re-incarcerated for filling out voter registration documents given to him by state officials as part of his release process .

Like many freedoms fighters who have come before him, he has continually come under fire while attempting 1) to politically educate the masses on the systems of capitalism, imperialism and oppression that plague Black, Brown, Indigenous and poor communities and 2) to provide a roadmap for all oppressed peoples to live by in order to upend the systems of incarceration, brutality and resource-hoarding which benefit a small few.

"We Believe It takes Village to Raise A Child": An Interview With BuffSci's Dr. Joseph B. Polat The following is a brief interview with Dr. Joseph B. Polat, the Executive Director of the Buffalo Academy of Science Charter School (BuffSci).

Why are you in education? What's your mission for not just BuffSci

So what I believe the problems are that we face and conquer these days are lack of education, poverty, and segregation. I believe the key to addressing these issues is providing quality education - quality and equitable. The best way to serve the communities that I am in is to help close the gap in poverty and education. I believe every child has the potential - and the right - and should be given the opportunity to be successful in their lives.

What are you doing differently with those same students that the district works with?

The challenge that we are dealing with is not a simple challenge. To be able to achieve and provide quality education in this environment, we need to create a team of educators that are dedicated and working toward the same goal. What I believe I am doing differently is empowering and putting together those educators and giving those educators the tools that they need to reach every student within our community. Another thing here at BuffSci, we are making all of our decisions and actions with the goal of student success; student success is the center. Everything in BuffSci is designed around the students and the entire faculty and student body work toward our goals by following our motto, “One Band One Sound.”

How do you feel about the conflict between traditional public schools V.S. Charters?

Dr. Polat Actually, I don’t believe there is a conflict. The sense of the conflict is coming from maybe the media. I don’t really want to blame any parties for that. There is no conflict and there should be no reason for a conflict. We are both serving our communities; both of our school systems have great educators and great leaders. We should work together to serve our students and work for the same goal - that being, serving our Buffalo youth.

Dr. Polat I hear that you are pushing into Rochester, NY. Can you tell us what that will look like and what your plans are for those students?

As we all know, Rochester is no different than Buffalo, considering the fact that equitable and quality education is needed for inner city students. BuffSci proved to be a successful school model and we gained some attention nationwide and statewide. With the support and encouragement from state and nation wide, stakeholders and foundations, we decided to extend our program to Rochester. We also want to help the Rochester youth by giving them access to quality education and school choice. I hope that we can keep providing and serving Buffalo and Rochester's youth with these institutions.

What does foundation and stakeholder support look like?

BuffSci was able to bring close to 2.5 million dollars to the City of Buffalo from National Foundations which will help support our students in Buffalo and WNY. We also secured an additional $750,000 from local foundations within WNY. We raised these funds for Buffalo students that are in our communities to improve their educational experiences. The idea is we are bringing national dollars to Buffalo!

What are your goals for BuffSci in the next 10 years?

BuffSci and RocSci will continue to serve our communities in the best way we know how. UB. Soon after, they began dancing together as a club activity before later blossoming into the Black Dance Workshop.

Eventually, the group moved off-campus to become a free standing neighborhood dance studio that offered Modern, Caribbean and African centered dance instruction for young children ) all the way up to teenagers and adults. All the while, the Black Dance Workshop was an incubator, where this fledgling, yet daring group of college students would eventually hone their talents all the way to the level of professional, dance touring company.

Yvonne’s journey eventually took her to the Buffalo Public Schools, where, in 1978, she became one the founding members of the dance program at a newly formed Magnet School, known to us now as the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts (BAVPA).

It was at the Arts Academy where Yvonne found her life’s work as a dance teacher extraordinaire, choreographer and motivator. During her thirty years at BAVPA, including perhaps 20 years as Chair of the Department, Yvonne received awards and accolades that are too numerous to mention. However, there is one that stands out. In 1994, Yvonne was nominated for Teacher of the Year by the prestigious, but now defunct, Walt Disney Teacher of the Year Awards program. Nationwide, only thirty teachers, within ten academic and arts disciplines were nominated for the award. For her student’s televised dance rendition, Yvonne choreographed an original piece that was performed before a capacity audience at the prestigious Pantaeges Theater in Washington, DC. The piece, entitled On the Pulse of Morning, had the students performing their dance, whilst a narrator recited the poem of that same name penned by the great Maya Angelou, which she wrote on the occasion of President Bill Clinton’s Inaugural celebration in January 1992.

NEWS BRIEF No Charges Against Police Who Shot and Killed Amir Locke

Officials reported last week that no charges would be filed in the death of Amir Locke, a 22-year-old Black man who was shot by a SWAT team officer Mark Hanneman and the other officers involved during a raid with a "no knock" warrant in Minneapolis in February.

Locke was sleeping on the couch in an apartment with his licensed firearm beside him when a team of Minneapolis SWAT officers raided his living room. Upon seeing Locke’s firearm from under his blanket, Hanneman shot him three times. Amir Locke was not a suspect in the underlying Saint Paul criminal investigation nor was he named in the search warrants. Amir Locke was yet another victim.

Buffalo Sabres News The Buffalo Sabres were officially eliminated from playoff contention last week but that shouldn't be the only story to come from this Sabres season. This Buffalo Sabres team showed great team chemistry and a fighters spirit as this team should be something to be looked upon for the next couple of seasons to come. The month of March Madness saw the Sabres go 10-4-1.

The Sabres just like the Buffalo Bills will have to make some organizational moves to keep this team moving in the right direction. One of these moves were already made as the Buffalo sabers signed Owen Power. Other moves in my great estimation that need to be made would include keeping the core players such as Tage Thompson, Jeff Skinner, Kyle Okposo, Victor Olaffsson, Rasmus Dahlin, and Alex Tuch. The Sabres are on a three-game losing streak currently as their four-game road trip will end in Toronto. The Sabres will be back home April 14th against the St. Louis Blues.

Frank Vogel will not be returning as the LA Lakers head coach next season as the Lakers compiled a very disappointing 3349. The vast majority of sports fanatics had the Lakers as an odds on favorite to play in the NBA Finals this season.
