Rochester Native Among Million Dollar Winners at 43North Competition 43North recently announced the winners of the 2022 competition with five unique businesses pulling through with flying colors, each winning 1millon dollars of investment funds to help scale their business as well as a host of support services in exchange for a small percentage and the business relocating to Buffalo for 1 full year working from the 43North headquarters downtown.

Among the winners this year is Rochester Native Khadesha Okwudili, founder and CEO of Agapé, a relationship wellness company that uses personalized questions to spark meaningful conversations. “I’m super grateful for the opportunity to further Agapé with the support from 43 North.

I’m looking forward to moving to Buffalo, given how vibrant the startup community is there.” she said.

Wyatt Calls for Traffic Study at Kensington and Bailey in Response to Hopewell Opioid Treatment Center University District Council Member Rasheed N.C. Wyatt is calling on the City of Buffalo Department of Public Works to conduct a traffic study at Kensington Ave and Bailey Ave where the proposed Hopewell Opioid Treatment Center is prepared to open despite push back from the community.

The resolution “Wyatt Traffic Study at Kensington and Bailey Near Cleve Hill Plaza” was adopted at the Buffalo Common Council Meeting held on Tuesday, October 18, 2022.

“Our University District community, the University District Block Club Coalition, and throughout the City of Buffalo have shown their opposition to the opening of this center, by circulating petitions, organizing peaceful protests, as well as calling on their local officials in the State Senate and Assembly to take action,” said Wyatt.

The resolution states that the location of the center on Kensington and Eggert Rd., already has traffic problems that causes traffic congestion at all hours of the day. According to documents published by the Hopewell Center it has stated that they plan to service about 300 patients once they are fully operational, with many patients traveling via personal vehicles and vans transported to and from this location.

ive months after one of this nation’s worst racist fueled massacres at the hands of a young White supremacist took the lives of 10 of Buffalo East side’s most beloved citizens, award-winning journalist Roland Martin delivered a message at the 54th Annual NAACP Awards Dinner unlike any we’ve had the opportunity to hear in a very long time.

His words – plain and straight to the point - echoed Malcolm and Martin, Fannie Lou and Frederick, and placed the madness in historical perspective. And for those of us who had become weary of the political grandstanding, the truths and confirmations he shared left us reenergized and hopeful.

His address was, in essence, a call to action.

-What’s Going On?“We’re living in a time in this country where folks are operating on ‘White fear' of a changing America,” he said in his opening statement.

“Twenty-one years from now we will be a nation of color and there is a segment of White America who cannot handle the fact they won’t be in full control of this country.

“We need to understand what is literally happening right now politically … and really what the blowback is all about,” Martin continued, “It’s all about power. Power means resources.

It means control.”

Throughout his talk he touched upon every oppressive condition Blacks have suffered since we reached these shores from enslavement and lynching to Jim crow and voter suppression.

“We’ve been hopping over hurtles and dodging bullets trying to vote – Don't act like we’ve had a free pass...."

He pointed out that not only are the Red states “in the wrong” – but even New York State "had some of the worse voting laws” until recently.

"When I talk about changes that should be made there are also some Blue states and Democrats that need to be gut checked,” he said to applause. He continued: “If you are standing in the way of Black progress – Democrat or Republican – trust me I will try to mow you down because I don’t care if you have a D or R or elephant or donkey - I do understand that there are some folks… who are Democrat and progressive who are actually more of an obstacle to our progress than some folks who are Republican.”

He said that the next step after having a clear understanding of what we’re up against is to look at public policy in a different way and basically ask, “how are things changing” and if you want to understand what is happening economically “you should always follow the money.”

“What you should be asking here in Buffalo is how much money are we getting from the state, county, city etc. We've got to challenge political leaders and say if you want Black votes then I need to see Black dollars, because our communities cannot and will not be rebuilt if based upon White philanthropy.”

“I can guarantee you if you start having money conversations in Buffalo its going to be a whole different attitude the way People look at you…"

-StrategyMartin reminded us that Dr. King in his classic book “Where Do We Go From Here” cited four institutions that are key to Black liberation: The Black church, the Black press, Black fraternities and sororities and Black professional organizations.

"What are we doing with all these organizations? Are we simply having meetings and talking among ourselves, feeling good talking about the same old stuff ?

“The only way we are going to literally change our communities is if we are willing to use the collective power that is in this room – not individual power - to change it.

"Now the question is what kind of America do you want your children to grow up in …and their children’s children? So your focus should not be trying to hold on to the America of the past but embrace the America of the future.

"I’m warning everybody in here – this is going to be a fight we’re going to have to deal with.

January 6 was not an aberration. We see election deniers running for office as we speak. We’re seeing folk who want to rewrite the constitution to limit access to the ballot,… who want to hold on to power as much as they can and the only way we’re going to stop them is if we get down, dirty, and grimy and fight and it's not going to happen over night….this is literally going to be a multigenerational battle.

"My suggestion to everyone…you’ve got to be willing to fight…this is a battle that we have been prepared for; that our ancestors have fought for us. Now its our time to step up in battle and if anybody understands how serious this is tell them exactly what my Alpha brother Vertner Woodson Tandy said, 'We will fight till hell freezes over and then we will fight on the ice!' fter escaping slavery and working on steam ships in Cleveland, Wells-Brown William Wells Brown moved to Buffalo.

He helped more than 70 Blacks escape on boats he navigated across the Niagara River at Black Rock Ferry.

He became the first African American to publish a book, Clotell; or, The President’s Daughter, and traveled the world speaking on abolitionism. His homesite is Shiloh Baptist Church today.

•Vine Street AME Church (Bethel AME) hosted a national convention with the purpose of discussing how to end slavery. Speakers included Samuel H. Davis, George Weir, Frederick Douglass, and Henry Highland Garnet. Garnet called for Southern slaves to refuse to work and resist their oppressors by any means necessary. The gatherings exceeded the church’s capacity and are moved outdoors, where 5,000 attend.

•During the 1891 Dock Worker Riot During the 1800s fights broke out between laborers and scabs, a mob was formed and hundreds of Irish and German dock workers attacked Blacks who were regularly employed to break up union organizing efforts at random. One Black was shot, at least two were murdered, and dozens beaten. Rioters turned their attention to the Union Block, where a mob surrounded the building.

Police rescued a large number of Black men at Dug’s Dive.

The famous freedom seeker Josiah Henson is the thirdgreat grandfather of our Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center Director of Community Engagement, Saladin Allah. 192 years ago on October 28th, 1930, Josiah Henson and his fam- Dewitt Lee ily made their historic crossing into Canada at Broderick Park in Buffalo, New York.

Through the vision of Buffalo community activist Dewitt R. Lee III, on Friday, October 28th, 2022 they will honor Henson's family crossing by making that journey back across to Canada for Emancipation Walk.

Saladin Allah will be a special guest for this event.

Niagara Track & Field Coach Receives Coach of the Year Honors

Congratulations to Coach Willie A. Price of the Niagara Falls Track & Field Club who was 1 of 18 coaches recognized and honored by Project Play of WNY at the Buffalo Bills Stadium, Dunn Tire Club, on October 16, 2022. The Coaches Honor Roll is an annual recognition of coaches dedicated to working to improve the lives and bodies of youth in their communities. The coaches are nominated by the parents, youth, and leaders in their communities.

Coach Price started the Niagara Track and Field Club in the summer of 2017, while volunteering as the Head Coach of the Niagara Falls High School Girls Track & Field Team. He started coaching after graduating from the University at Buffalo, where he ran and still holds several of the universities track & field records. Over the years he has coached Youth, High School, College and National champions in various track & field events.

This Spring he started the Niagara Track & Family Fitness Program with Niagara USATF, NFCSD, Ralph C. Wilson, and Project play of WNY. The program addresses the issue of childhood obesity while introducing youth to the various activities of track & field. Coach Price was nominated for the Coaches Honor Roll by the parents, youth and Mayor Robert Restaino.

n Saturday October 22 a press conference was called by Tops employee Fragrance Harris Stanfield who spoke out about how Tops employees, who were present at the time of the May 14 massacre at their Jefferson Ave location, were not well treated nor well considered in the disbursement decisions of the 5/14 Survivors Fund facilitated by The National Compassion Fund.

The National Compassion Fund provides a single, trusted way for the public to donate directly to victims of a mass crime, such as a shooting or terrorist attack.

During her press conference Fragrance was surrounded by three Tops employees who were among those present the day of the shooting.

She spoke on how poorly they were handled and how they don’t feel like they are being treated as survivors more than assets/ witnesses of the May 14 massacre.

Last Thursday Fragrance was informed of the disbursement plan for the 5/14 Compassion Fund of which 6.4 Million dollars was raised. Recipients were divided into five categories, A through E. Fragrance, a mother of 7 who holds down two jobs and hasn’t been able to return to work since one failed attempt that left her in tears for 3 days has been asking adamantly why Tops employees were not put into their own category by the committee vs. being grouped in with everyone who was on the premises that day.

“It’s not about the amount it’s the dismissiveness of it,” she said.

“We were asked what we need and we said we need compassion and we said we need time. Now in order for us to have time to heal wouldn’t it make sense that if we were at work when this trauma occurred ,and this is the reason why we are traumatized , that you would relieve us of that duty for a certain period of time so that we could heal? In order to do that you might want to consider how much we make at work,” She said.

“Why weren’t we considered at all?” She continued “We haven’t been treated like survivors of the mass shooting…” “Not only are we being dismissed, not only are we being thrown some scraps, not only do we not have a seat at the table, not only are we not part of the discussion, but we’re not even expected to get better. We’re expected to cope, which Black people in America have always been expected to do.”

“I can bet you that if this was a White suburban neighborhood and a store in a White suburban neighborhood was shot up like this they would have had voices.

White people have voices so why shouldn’t we? So I became the voice for us . I’m not alone I’m speaking for my coworkers who have asked me to speak up on our behalf.

I’m not speaking about anyone else, I’m not talking down anyone’s trauma. “All I’m saying is Where is our consideration and where is our seat at the table where are we in the discussion before you decide what’s enough for us in a situation such as this.

“I think the remedy is to include us in the conversation. I think the remedy is to find out how much we need so that we can survive for a period of time. The stain of this trauma is going to be with me anytime I think of work for the rest of my life,” she said.

Sorors of Sigma Gamma Rho Announce Centennial Gala Celebration

n November 12, 1922, in Indianapolis, Indiana at Butler University, seven women came together and founded Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Over the last 100 years, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority has welcomed more than 100,000 collegiate and professional women from every profession, with more than 500 chapters in the United States, Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, Germany, South Korea, U.S. Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates, and Ghana, Africa.

The local chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority was founded in the fall of 1987 at the University at Buffalo. Since that time, the sister Sorors have been providing exemplary service and scholarship to the Buffalo community for no less than 35 years! Social Media's Negative Effect On Our Youth couple of decades ago, if a teen wanted to invite friends to a party, he or she would call A on the phone or send a paper invitation to their homes. Today, all is needed is a phone and social media connections. With one post to FB, Twitter or Instagram, a crowd of hundreds of party goers, half of them unknown to the host, would descend on a gathering at a moment's notice !

Our young men and women are using fake names, other people pictures and profiles to cheat, lie to or con the ' mark' through activities they call phishing, catfishing and other newly invented, colorful names. Life savings have been stolen from love starved, gullible widows and older women by slick, con artists who have no intention of getting into any kind of a relationship with these lonely females. Sadly, these dishonest people are not just men. Many male victims have been invested of their wallet and or wealth by a member of the so- called weaker sex!

On a sadder note, today, four teenagers in Buffalo were killed in a horrific car accident , with the 16 year old driver, in a car that was stolen. The Erie County District Attorney stated that the car was of a make and model that one could use a phone charger to start the engine. County D.A . John Flynn said that the car, a KIA is being shown, in a video on social media, demonstrating how easy it is to steal it, making it one of the most popular cars thieves are stealing.

There are also internet videos of how to make a ghost gun, what products to use to make homemade bombs and other negative activities that serve no purpose but to hurt, infect pain or to kill. Our youth have too much access to information that does not educate them in positive ways or help to promote good sportsmanship. I will not get into the much needed discussion of school shootings, terrorist attacks and an increase in gun and racial violence, where the perpetrator is getting younger and younger with every attack.

Survey Finds Black Voters’ Mood Ahead Of Midterms Tempered By Age, Economy And Racism Part 2 of a 2-part Series In a few words, what is the biggest concern facing you and your family right now?

Seventy-three percent of those surveyed cited economic concerns followed by health concerns (9%), crime-gun safety (3%) and racial disparities (2%) Inflation has had especially devastating effects on the housing market. According to the survey, housing is a top economic concern for Black voters. About three in 10 said it is the economic issue they most want the President and Congress to address, including higher shares of women, voters under 50 and those with lower incomes. Home prices have climbed 40% during the two years of the pandemic, when homebuyers snapped up homes in short supply backed by near-zero interest rates, according to Reuters.

However, homeownership for Black Americans has stalled and become even more challenging due to low inventory and soaring home prices, Jessica Lautz, National Association of Realtors (NAR) vice president of demographics and behavioral insights, told CNN in February. Black homeownership today remains lower than it was a decade ago, at 43.4%, behind white (72.1%), Latino (50%) and Asian (61.7%) homeownership rates, according to a NAR report.

“Today, homeownership is the principal source of wealth creation for most American households,” said Marcia L. Fudge, Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, in a statement to CNN. Black voters, rightfully so, are concerned that higher home prices, rising interest rates and a worsening racial gap in homeownership will close the door on their opportunity to own a home.

The U.S. Supreme Court’s recent Dobbs ruling, which overturned Roe v. Wade, and the high court itself have been hot-button issues causing division along gender, income and religious fault lines. Among Black voters, the survey shows attitudes toward the Court and its recent decisions that differ along educational lines. Eighty-one percent of Black voters who are college graduates believe justices make decisions based on politics and ideology compared to 66% of Black voters without a college degree.

Do you (approve) or (disapprove) of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade?

When it comes to the overturning of Roe v. Wade specifically, eight in 10 Black voters disapprove of the Court’s decision (81%) and a similar share see it as a bad thing for Black women.

Three in ten Black voters believe that the overturning of Roe v. Wade will have a disproportionate impact on Black women compared to White women.

•Judge Pridgen became the city’s fist female chief Judge this summer when Mayor Brown officially appointed her to the post. She's replaced judge Craig Hannah, who was recently appointed to the New York State Supreme Court. Judge Pridgen has served on the city court for more than seven years, after starting in 2015 as the youngest City Court Judge.

•Attorneys Samuel Davis and Gary Wilson were also appointed to filled the two vacancies on the city court bench his summer by Mayor Brown. Davis, a Chicago native, moved to Buffalo in 1999 to practice criminal, family, and personal injury law.

•Wilson, a member of the LGBTQ community, previously served as principal law clerk to a State Supreme Court justice.

•Judge Craig Hannah was appointed to the Buffalo City Court in January 2006 by Mayor Brown.

Later that year, he was elected to a 10-year term and in 2016, Judge Hannah was re-elected to a second 10-year term. In 2019, he was appointed Chief Judge of the Buffalo City Court and Supervising Judge for the 11 City Courts within the Eight Judicial District.

On June 3, 2022, Judge Hannah was appointed Justice of the New York State Supreme Court by Governor Kathy Hochul.

He has risen to national fame as the presiding judge of the first opioid intervention court in the United States, established in May 2017. He has been featured by such major publications as the New York Times, NBC News, the Denver Post and HBO Vice New York Times, NBC News, the Denver Post and HBO Vice News -School Board CandidatesThis year is also the first year that school board candidates will be on the ballot. The Black Woman: Our Salvation

I

t happened in October during Domestic Violence Month.

A tragic shooting left a young mother, Keaira Hudson, dead and three children without a mom. The travesty took place a few weeks ago in broad daylight in front of her children by her estranged husband. Keaira was a victim of domestic violence before she was ultimately murdered.

It’s time to get some laws changed. Every nine seconds in the U.S. a woman is assaulted or beaten. Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women, more than car accidents, muggings and rapes combined. Men , women, and children are impacted by domestic violence. About 1 in 4 women and nearly 1 in 10 men have experienced violence by an intimate partner during their lifetime.

The numbers are astonishing but can give an idea of the need to raise awareness and support those impacted. The World Health Organization estimates that 1 in 3, or around 736 million women around the world are subjected to domestic violence.

In my conversations with some women on this matter, one lady did state that not enough is being done here in Buffalo, to address domestic violence as evidenced by Keaira’s death!

I am asking the community and all organizations who support stopping the violence against women to stand up. March to city hall, march to the county offices and the governors mansion and to the white house and demand better protection for women.

Again; more laws are definitely needed and those on the books, to be revamped to better protect our women.

Black men, we can no longer stand by and idly watch as our queens are abused. We should celebrate the Black woman, uplift, encourage, protect and respect our queens - not abuse and destroy them.

The woman is the most precious gift that GOD could ever give man. Black men read this again! There is nothing in all creation greater (other than GOD) than a WOMAN. A Women brings balance to a man. When we ignore and deprive the Black woman of opportunities in everyday life, that balance is disrupted. The violation and disrespect for women is the reason why the world is in the condition it is in now.

All the ancient Black paradigms identified the woman as the most integral part of our existence. Even in Islam, Judaism and Christianity, you’ll find the worship of Black women. In the Vatican City, the Pope bows to the Black Madonna.

I’d like to take this opportunity to publicly apologize to all women. I, like many of my brothers, have been guilty of disrespect shown towards my sisters. I am fully aware that to disrespect the women is to desecrate the womb from which we all derive. So I call upon my ancestors and my two grandmothers who watch over me, for forgiveness. My very existence comes through them and my mother. So my sisters, I humbly and sincerely apologize, for any foolish and disrespectful attitude I may have displayed towards you.

I hope that all the men who read this will come forth and follow suit and apologize to our woman privately or publicly.

P.S. To the one given the red rose that lights in a glass box, apologize if you were let down. I'm just sayin'...

Black voters say Trump should be criminally charged for Jan. 6 insurrection in survey A new theGrio/KFF Survey of Black Voters finds that the majority of Black voters want to see Trump charged with crimes in relation to the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. The survey asked voters whether they supported Trump being charged for the Jan. 6 insurrection based on what they heard or saw during Congressional hearings conducted by the House select committee investigating the attack, with 84% saying Trump should be charged, and 15% saying he should not.

White Male Only Humboldt Parkway Talks?

Can someone explain to me why the Eugene V. Debs Hall, a group consisting entirely of White males moves into a Black neighborhood and now is offering to "educate" OUR community on OUR resources like Humboldt Parkway that WE have been working to fix for DECADES? At issue is their inaugural first “Jane's Talk,” described as “ a bi-monthly series of talks on urbanism, with a series of presentations on Humboldt Parkway: Past, Present, & Future.” Did they include ANYONE from The Restore Our Community Coalition, Inc.( R.O.C.C. ) to speak, like the Blalck woman who leads it? NO!! An artist, a professor, and a planner, all White were invited.

Is this "mansplaining" or "whitesplaining"?

Are any of these speakers even from the East Side? One of them isn't even from Buffalo! Why bring in White "experts" from outside the community and even outside the city and not invite a BLACK WOMAN or BLACK LEADER from a few blocks away who has been involved in this issue for decades?

At least the lily-white Buffalo News bosses, when they want to sink the long-sought aspirations of the BLACK community like they did in Sunday's paper, sent to the community staff to sniff around and find those among us who can always be found ready to grumble and gainsay anything anyone tries to do to make things better.

And why do they want to sink this? The News, which caters to White suburbanites and casu-

ally bashes our community at every opportunity, is afraid of any project that might delay by even a minute the White privilege of working in Buffalo and living in the suburbs that the Kensington Expressway has allowed them. This privilege has been on the backs of Blacks dying from cancer and respiratory diseases from that expresway.

Now after decades of hard work and sweat by BLACKS and especially BLACK WOMEN the BLACK COMMUNITY finally gets the power to ask the establishment "Please, sir, let us at least put a lid on top and filter the exhaust that's choking us and dampen the noise that keeps us awake all night and allow us to expand our park north over your highway and we promise that we'll still let you drive through underneath." This is our plea to the White male power structure that has never had to hold the hand of a beloved BLACK elder dying too young ; a power structure that wants to keep us from getting even that!

Aren't these WHITE kids who now have this club in the BLACK community supposed to be "woke"?? So how is it they can't see that the Humboldt Parkway issue is a RACIAL JUSTICE and ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE issue? It's one thing that they come into OUR community to build their clubhouse and play activist because there's no more cheap buildings left on the west side, but now they are saying they know better than us and in fact don't even need to hear from any of us about this project OUR community has been fighting for year after year for decades. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE? -Ride Wight

NO TO HOPEWELL!!!

Shame on New York’s Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) and Hopewell Center, owned by the Seneca Nation’s for-profit Seneca Holdings corporation.

They arranged to put an opioid treatment center on the East Side of Buffalo, at the Cleve-Hill Plaza in the University Heights District, without ever bothering to inform or consult with nearby neighborhood residents or block clubs beforehand.

Whatever the reasons for putting this opioid treatment facility, Hopewell Center, in the University District and excluding its residents from the decision-making process, the implication is clear: our neighborhood’s collective quality of life simply doesn’t matter. Kind of hard to imagine a message more disrespectful, insulting, or offensive.

Make no mistake. We, the members of the University District Block Club Coalition, have the utmost sympathy for drug addicts and their families, and we could not possibly care less about the race or ethnicity of either the people who own Hopewell or the people who would be coming to their clinic. Our only concern is the undeniably harmful impacts another drug clinic would have on our community.

While we appreciate the increased need for opioid treatment centers throughout Erie County, the University District area is already more than saturated with drug treatment centers. We have five of them, including an established opioid treatment facility, within a two-or-so mile radius of the plaza. Another opioid treatment clinic is a mere five and one-half miles away.

Even if, as Hopewell claims, the City of Buffalo itself

needs additional opioid clinics, it simply doesn’t follow that their facility has to be in the University District. People often travel significant distances to get help with their drug problems. In fact, Hopewell obviously recognizes this, because their plan is to bus some people, including Native Americans who may live near Salamanca or on Buffalo's West Side, a long way to its treatment center.

We cannot accept that our quality of life is meaningless or acquiesce in its likely degradation by the surreptitious actions of unaccountable bureaucrats and large investment corporations. Clearly, they do not realize—or care—that the neighborhoods surrounding the Cleve-Hill Plaza are full of hard-working, home-owning, voting citizens, who value the livability of their community and deserve a voice in its future.

We therefore call on OASAS to reverse its ill-advised authorization of the Hopewell Center to operate in the Cleve-Hill Plaza in favor of a more equitable solution. Western New York is a big place; surely, the state and Hopewell can engage in a far more transparent process and do a far better job of finding a new location for the clinic, one that serves the region without disregarding and imperiling residential neighborhoods.

Buffalo’s Own Jody Fortson is Excelling for Kansas City Chiefs

uffalo native Jody Fortson is enjoying life in Kansas City.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end and special teams player is having a good season with career stats in two seasons with Kansas City Chiefs of 7 receptions for 58 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Jody is slowly becoming a regular target for Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes . He has two receptions for 11 yards and 2 TD’s so far this season. Jody is also a key Special Teams role player for the Chiefs.

“I’m disappointed we did not come out with the win,” he said in reference to the Bills recent win over the chiefs. “But that’s a great team over there (Bills). I went to Erie Community City Campus. With anything that’s important to you must stay focused. This is what I wanted to do - be a professional football player and I have a strong support system within my Uncle who believed in me from the start and I had a lot of people pulling for me. It takes a village to raise a child,” he continued. “ I’m not one of those names in Buffalo that had a popularity or I did not do great on the football field or in the classroom but I stayed with it and kept going."

Fortson’s advice to young people is to just put your head down, work hard , and stay on your grind.

“There’s going to be people talking about you when you’re winning or losing,” he said. “ Just remain focused in going after your goals. Keep the faith and don’t let anything shake you.”

Keep your eyes on Jody Fortson Western New York! He’s a determined young man doing it the right way. I was very impressed with his maturity and conversation. We wish him much more continued success in the NFL and life!

he bye week in Buffalo marks a good time to take stock of where we’ve been and what the Bills must do going forward. First, let’s give them their well-deserved props for the magnificent way that they’ve handled their business this first third of the season. Most fans started the season as “true believers” and the Bills have done nothing to dampen that faith. However, the next two-thirds of the season will be a gauntlet which will test their mettle and, ultimately, determine whether they can make the requisite down payment on a Super Bowl appearance. A football team, like any other professional sports team, must “pay some dues” in order to become a champion and the Bills still have plenty more dues left to pay before they can go on their magic carpet ride.

Some of that dues has already been paid. Overcoming early season injuries that may have derailed a less talented squad was dues paid. Demonstrating the grit and determination to win games that they could have lost. That, too, was dues paid. But as we continue the season, the Bills will still need to write a lot more checks in order to earn their way to the Promise Land of Super Bowl LVII. Personally, like everybody else, I have been swept up in the Super Bowl madness that has enveloped WNY and beyond. However, I’ve been careful, as readers may have noticed, to refrain from making any bold Super Bowl predictions. In fact, let me make it perfectly clear right here and right now, that I am not predicting a Buffalo Super Bowl victory - not even an appearance - because for one thing, that would surely put the jinx on them.

But besides the jinx, such a prediction would also be in open and reckless defiance of the “Buffalo Curse,” which I alluded to in my previous column. To be sure, those of a certain age – us Boomers - know all about the Curse. It is the Millennials and the Gen-Xers who may not know about it and are thus prone to foolishly believing that all the Bills need to do is keep on winning and that the rest will take care itself. But, lest we forget, the Curse has visited itself upon us before and always at the very worst possible moment. Scott Norwood’s infamous “wide right,” the “Music City Miracle” and the more recent “13 Second” game against KC are all Exhibit A. Not to mention, of course, the four straight Super Bowl losses.

Yes, all of that was the Buffalo Curse doing its nefarious thing.

Some say that the Curse was put on the Bills back in the mid-60's because of the shabby way they treated the late Ernie Warlick, a veteran tight end on the Bills first AFL Championship team in 1964. Warlick, who had caught a key touchdown pass in their upset victory over the San Diego Chargers, went to training camp the following season needing but one game to qualify for an AFL pension. The late Ralph Wilson, then a notorious cheapskate, cut Warlick, one of the most beloved Bills, thus denying him the pension. And it was then, it is said, that the Buffalo Curse was born. But make no mistake about it, before the Curse can strike again, the City will need a communal exorcism to rid us of its bad mojo.

That may be where the Bills Mafia comes in. The Bills Mafia has gained national, even international notoriety, for its fervent support of the Bills. And it is not an organization that just cheers the team on. They have also become a valued civic organization that has spearheaded numerous charitable giving activities and are at the forefront of everything Buffalo Bills. Next up, however, may be Bills Mafia’s biggest challenge. They will need to do a “hit job” on the Buffalo Curse. So, if you’re listening Bills Mafia, talk to your people. Let’s get your Consigliore working on a plan to Reverse the Curse.

I’m thinking a kind of large scale, communal exorcism right in front of City Hall, with incense, a bonfire and ‘holy persons’ of all persuasions to include: Catholic Priests, COGIC Ministers speaking in tongues, Imans, Shamans, Voo Doo-ists and JuJu practitioners all. And only then, will we harness the righteous energy that will put the evil Curse to rest and, thereby, get our Bills over the hump.

University Council Member Wyatt Hosts Halloween on Bailey Event!

On Friday, October 28 6-8 p.m. University District Council Member Rasheed N.C. Wyatt presents Halloween on Bailey Avenue event at the Edward Saunders Community Center 2777 Bailey Ave., with free hayrides, roller skating, bowling, face painting, and free food for the community and more! Event is in partnership with Dion's Dreamers (Buffalo Bills' Dion Dawkins non-profit), Wegmans, Highmark BCBS of Western New York, and Community Access Services/Evergreen Health.

Street Certified in collaboration with VOICE Buffalo is hosting Trunk or Treat Oct. 27 in the Tri-Main parking lot, at 179 Halbert St. Decorated trunks and halloween costumes are encouraged as folks hand out candy from their trunks.

The Police Athletic League (PAL) ofBuffalo will host a Spooktacular Kickball Game" Thurs.

Oct. 27 from 4-7 p.m. leading up to the holiday to promote physical itness and mental health for youth. The Spooktacular Kickball game is for youth ages 6-16.
