President’s Message
Christmas did not always grab the attention of the Church or the world as it has in the last 50 years. Saint Francis of Assisi was first to use the crèche as a teaching instrument to draw Catholics more personally into moment of incarnation, but the day really became popular when it was commercialized. The secular world saw money. It transformed the feast, converting stories of charity and kindness toward the poor and others in need (think King Wenceslas and Saint Nicholas) into obligations to shop, purchase, and buy. Great for business, not so much for faith.
Is our Christmas catalog reinforcing that message to shop? I hope not. I hope, rather, that it turns our minds and hearts toward the poor; not from a material perspective, but through the eyes of faithfulness, love, and joyful dignity.
At times, we are all poor – alone in an overcrowded city, physically sick, overworked, tired, or overwhelmed by circumstances, responsibilities, and events. In that sense, we are all the Holy Family! Saint Francis wanted us to see ourselves in that Bethlehem stable. We have all ‘been there.’
And, because we understand, we mimic the owner of the overcrowded inn who, giving only what he could, still made a tremendous difference in one family’s life.
This Christmas, I hope you have a moment to gaze upon the crèche and see ourselves. Perhaps sometimes as the one in need and yet still holy, faithful, and loving. At other times, as the one who gave what they could: the innkeeper’s stable, the shepherds’ time, the magi’s blessing, or the king’s wealth.
We are all there, and we can understand that even strangers can show us God is with us in the smallest acts of loving kindness.

Chalice’s Santiago site is committed to uplifting their community, even beyond sponsorship. They embrace “causes that embody the true spirit of community, solidarity, and faith,” says Jesmarina, a leader in the site.
Not far from their site office, 1,200 migrant families live in Chile’s largest migrant camp, Millantú. Word reached the Santiago team that camp had no drinking water. They had to act.
Thanks to everyone who gave a “most needed” gift through our gift catalogue, the Santiago team delivered 150 jugs of water and 30 boxes of food for the 3,500 people in need.
“This support came at a much-needed time,” says Evelyn, the camp director. “Here we must conserve every drop of water, and there are many families who simply have nothing to eat. Chalice’s support is a welcome relief.”

Joyce starts her journey on the right foot, and in the right shoes.
Joyce, the fifth of her parents’ seven children, grew up in a small village in Kenya. Her widowed mother couldn’t afford her children’s education, and all who began school dropped young. By the time she was eight, Joyce still hadn’t started school. She calls this her area’s “poverty trap,” and believes she would have been caught in too, “were it not for Chalice.”
Equipped with supplies, shoes, and a uniform, it was finally Joyce’s first day of class. “The happiest moment of my life is when I woke up early one morning to join other children to go to school,” she says. “It did not matter then that I had to walk the long distance to school. It did not matter that I was to learn with younger children. It was a joyous moment to join other children in school.”

Cuso is a farm-to-table chef who wears many hats — literally. In his farmer’s sombrero, he’s growing vibrant vegetables. With his chef’s hat on, he’s a culinary wizard bringing his fresh harvests straight from the fields to the neighborhood kids’ lunch tables. Cuso transforms simple ingredients into mouthwatering meals for our Bolivian sites’ beloved lunch programs.

Nanny and Buckling
Trowel in hand, boots on...hooves, Tierra is most at home in the dirt. To her, there’s little more wonderful than what’s packed in a tiny seed, and a tiny person. When she teaches kids about the beauty of farming and the importance of nature, she nurtures both the land and our future.

With the ink still wet on his high school diploma, Yuni is off to college. With all new classes, friends, and challenges, the specs on his nose won’t be the only thing he’s balancing. But from late-night study groups to varsity practice at dawn, Yuni is ready to take his future by the horns, so to speak!

Dormi is the snuggliest goat you’ll ever meet. Wrapped in his favorite blankey, Dormi is always ready for a bedtime adventure read by his parents. But don’t be fooled, this drowsy dreamer is just making sure he gets his rest so that he can be a snappy student tomorrow.

Peek-a-boo is Nanny and Buckling’s favorite game, a simple joy amidst the whirlwind of chores. Even amid the piles of laundry, nothing ever stops story time. Matayo has a hard hat and a soft heart. He’s not just about building structures; he’s about building homes. When the monsoon rains fall, the drops are a symphony to his ears, knowing that the kids inside his houses are snuggly and dry. Each drop sounds like safety, love, and peace.

Lalitha, a mother of a young daughter and intellectually disabled son, needed a way to earn a living from home. Through the gift catalog, she received a rice grinder and launched a business milling her neighbours’ grain for popular dishes.

The Chiclayo site’s three-year Family School Program educated and empowered 65 mothers to strengthen their families, improve communication, promote gender equality, and reduce violence.
