“Love is God’s greatest gift to humanity, it is his promise and our hope.”
Pope Benedict XVI

“Love is God’s greatest gift to humanity, it is his promise and our hope.”
Pope Benedict XVI
Christmas did not always grab the attention of the Church or the world as it has in the last 50 years. Saint Francis of Assisi was first to use the crèche as a teaching instrument to draw Catholics more personally into moment of incarnation, but the day really became popular when it was commercialized. The secular world saw money. It transformed the feast, converting stories of charity and kindness toward the poor and others in need (think King Wenceslas and Saint Nicholas) into obligations to shop, purchase, and buy. Great for business, not so much for faith.
Is our Christmas catalogue reinforcing that message to shop? I hope not. I hope, rather, that it turns our minds and hearts toward the poor; not from a material perspective, but through the eyes of faithfulness, love, and joyful dignity.
At times, we are all poor – alone in an overcrowded city, physically sick, overworked, tired, or overwhelmed by circumstances, responsibilities, and events. In that sense, we are all the Holy Family! Saint Francis wanted us to see ourselves in that Bethlehem stable. We have all ‘been there.’
And, because we understand, we mimic the owner of the overcrowded inn who, giving only what he could, still made a tremendous difference in one family’s life.
This Christmas, I hope you have a moment to gaze upon the crèche and see ourselves. Perhaps sometimes as the one in need and yet still holy, faithful, and loving. At other times, as the one who gave what they could: the innkeeper’s stable, the shepherds’ time, the magi’s blessing, or the king’s wealth.
We are all there, and we can understand that even strangers can show us God is with us in the smallest acts of loving kindness.
Fr. Patrick Cosgrove, President and Founder
Our mission is to reveal God’s love in action by serving the poor, with the Global Catholic Community.

Joyce starts her journey on the right foot, and in the right shoes.
Joyce, the fifth of her parents’ seven children, grew up in a small village in Kenya. Her widowed mother couldn’t afford her children’s education, and all who began school dropped young. By the time she was eight, Joyce still hadn’t started school. She calls this her area’s “poverty trap,” and believes she would have been caught in too, “were it not for Chalice.”
Equipped with supplies, shoes, and a uniform, it was finally Joyce’s first day of class. “The happiest moment of my life is when I woke up early one morning to join other children to go to school,” she says. “It did not matter then that I had to walk the long distance to school. It did not matter that I was to learn with younger children. It was a joyous moment to join other children in school.”
Today, Joyce is finishing her degree in political science.
When students don’t have the right clothes or supplies, they don’t feel like they belong. The right school supplies don’t just equip them for a day in class, they build a community where every child feels seen and valued.
Everyone loves goats! Giving someone a goat through the gift catalogue is both funny and charming (for us) and meaningful (for a family in need.)
This year at Chalice, we decided that the world — and our catalogue — needed more goats. So, on top of the furry and adaptable ‘real’ goats, we have created 13 new goat gifts. Each GOAT (that is, greatest of all time) represents the top needs of each of the 13 countries Chalice serves. As a ‘bundle’ gift, these adorable and collectable goat gifts are the best of both worlds: the joy of giving a goat and meeting a not-goat-related need for a child or family living in poverty.
With your gift of a $50 goat, you’ll receive a special animated e-card. When mailing it to someone, the card includes a collectable goat sticker as a cheerful bonus.

Let’s introduce our 13 GOATs!
Cuso is a farm-to-table chef who wears many hats — literally. In his farmer’s sombrero, he’s growing vibrant vegetables. With his chef’s hat on, he’s a culinary wizard bringing his fresh harvests straight from the fields to the neighborhood kids’ lunch tables. Cuso transforms simple ingredients into mouthwatering meals for our Bolivian sites’ beloved lunch programs.
Bolivia’s GOAT represents: Equipment for Cooking and Baking, and School Lunches.
Nanny and Buckling
Trowel in hand, boots on...hooves, Tierra is most at home in the dirt. To her, there’s little more wonderful than what’s packed in a tiny seed, and a tiny person. When she teaches kids about the beauty of farming and the importance of nature, she nurtures both the land and our future.
Guatemala’s GOAT represents: Crop Seeds and Tools and Training for Farmers.
With the ink still wet on his high school diploma, Yuni is off to college. With all new classes, friends, and challenges, the specs on his nose won’t be the only thing he’s balancing. But from late-night study groups to varsity practice at dawn, Yuni is ready to take his future by the horns, so to speak!
Haiti’s GOAT represents Continuing Education.
Dormi is the snuggliest goat you’ll ever meet. Wrapped in his favourite blankey, Dormi is always ready for a bedtime adventure read by his parents. But don’t be fooled, this drowsy dreamer is just making sure he gets his rest so that he can be a snappy student tomorrow.
Chile’s GOAT represents: Mattresses, Beds, and Blankets.
Peek-a-boo is Nanny and Buckling’s favourite game, a simple joy amidst the whirlwind of chores. Even amid the piles of laundry, nothing ever stops story time. Even as a busy mom, Nanny’s top priority is her little one’s health, in body and mind. Even when Buckling’s a billy one day, he’ll always be her baby.
Ghana’s GOAT represents: Mom & Baby Checkups, Diapers, and Washing Machines.
Festiva is a goat with a flair for fun. She and her BFF Gala transform their quiet farm into a lively party, where every animal is a future friend. Their extroverted energy makes every barnyard bash surprisingly wild!
India’s GOAT represents: Animal Feed, Piglets, and Cows.
The local kids can’t wait to see Doc Dawa, but that may have something to do with her bottomless pocket of treats. Only a few minutes at her friendly clinic makes any jab jitters disappear. With jokes, bribes, and a little magic, everyone knows that checkups can be fun.
Kenya’s GOAT represents: Medication, Vitamins, and Vaccines.
Fab fashionista Ropa loves to feel the fabric slip through her hooves. But for the sewing instructor, the real magic comes when she sees her students try on the first garment they’ve ever made. Behind every shirt, skirt, and shawl is a new tailor with a vision and a future.
Paraguay’s GOAT represents: Sewing Machines and Adult Training.
Matayo has a hard hat and a soft heart. He’s not just about building structures; he’s about building homes. When the monsoon rains fall, the drops are a symphony to his ears, knowing that the kids inside his houses are snuggly and dry. Each drop sounds like safety, love, and peace.
The Philippines’ GOAT represents: Latrines, Sheet Metal Roofing, and Home Renovations/Repairs.
Armed with a freezer full of medical supplies and a playful spirit, Nurse Afya knows how to connect with her patients — stickers. This community health nurse knows that healing goes beyond medicine. Nurse Afya is on a one-goat mission to spread mosquito nets, not malaria; health, not fear.
Tanzania’s GOAT represents: Freezers, Medical Checkups, and Mosquito Nets.
Bedecked in his signature tie, Muzy makes every class a jam session. This cool-cat-goat can spark a love for music in even the most tone-deaf student. Like every teacher, he works to make his classroom a vibrant space of creativity and fun; a place where students can’t wait to come and learn.
Ukraine’s GOAT represents: Teaching Supplies and Musical Instruments.
Tuma is the goat you want to see at breakfast time. Keep an eye out for the charismatic chicken farmer who delivers fresh eggs on his bicycle that doubles as his mobile market. Thanks to a little help from his friends at Chalice, Tuma pedals through his local market with his prized produce every morning. His eggs are small, but the nutrition – and smiles they bring – are anything but.
Zambia’s GOAT represents: Chicks and Bicycles
Briga wears her school uniform with fierce school pride. As the queen of the debate club, she’s championing her school’s five-year win streak. For Briga, civics class isn’t just a subject; it’s her future. She knows she’ll always fight for what’s right, and use her voice (or, bleat) to bring change in her community.
Peru’s GOAT represents: Textbooks, Uniforms, and Hygiene Supplies for Girls.
