Legend Borough

Red Hook is a neighbourhood in the borough of Brooklyn in the city of New York. It was originally established by the Dutch as a village named Red Hook in 1636. This neighbourhood is said to be one of the earliest establishments in Brooklyn. Red Hook is surrounded by water on three sides and Gowanus highway as well as to the battery tunnel on the forth connecting to Manhattan. Red hook get s it name because of the red clay soil on the site and the shape of land that protrudes from the coast to the south. Over the years the land use of red hook as changed from an agricultural land to an important industrial centre during world war to residential plotting. Erie basin was constructed in 1850 by acquiring almost 1 million square feet of land. It became gained importance as the ship repair and maintenance centre and grain storage. After completing of the dock it was sold to a company who proceeded inn constructing first dry dock site for.repair of large ships. During Civil war Erie basin was the centre of sip repair in New York.

Since red hook is a neighbourhood with rich history, it is interesting to see various older roads elements. Few parts of the site ave cobbled stone roads and to compliment the elements, IKEAâ€™s park as cobbled stones curbing for the trees. Few pairs one the site and waterfront are not inn use and disconnected physically from the mainland.

Red hook is connected to the neighbourhood via bus routes. The closest Subways station is Smith-ninth streets which is to the north east of Gowanus highway, I-478 highway urhood connecting Brooklyn to Manhattan. Red hook caters to ferry routes at the few active jetties at three locations namely red hook, Erie Basin Park and GBX Gowanus Bay Terminal. Red hook neighbourhood has good connection by roads.

Topography layout

The topography of the site is flat with very less variations in height. Due to it being a flat land, the issue of flooding is common and occurs frequently almost every season. The flood line cover her most of the study area on the site making the site prone to future flood issues which is a threat in terms of rise in seas level.

The buildings typology on the site varies from residential, mixed use, commercial, studios, etc. Most building on the site belong to the early development happened on the site. Maximum building were built before 1978 and a very few after that until 2013. Most of the new development as happened within the building making an adaptive reuse of the building and giving it a new definition and usage.
