A Welcome Message Last year, together magazine broke taboos by tackling some of the more sensitive topics that affect cancer patients and their families.

Written from the counsellors’ and therapists’ perspective, the article drew praise from clients for helping to make it easier to raise difficult subjects with loved ones and professionals. Hearing how this magazine can makes such a difference, just as our services do, is extremely encouraging and inspires us to continue to develop.

In this issue of together, many of the voices you’ll hear are those of our clients, from age six to 86. In fact, we see clients as young as three, which illustrates vividly how everyone who needs support, has a place at Chai. Read about our child-centred therapies for children and teens on p6, and also, discover the very special club that caters to our older clients, on p24.

Our services address so many varied and complex concerns.

On p18, we hear from three clients, for whom they had a life-changing effect. Meanwhile, Lisa Steele’s exploration of the Chai journey

Seamless care

When all that was stable and reassuring is thrown up in the air, Chai is the caring, supportive, professional place where patients and their families can turn.

Chief Executive Lisa Steele explains the Chai journey

We call it seamless care, because we look after each person’s needs individually and collectively as a family.

I

t takes courage to make that first call to Chai, when being proactive after news of a cancer diagnosis can feel like an impossible demand. Whether the call is received via our Freephone helpline number or each centre’s direct number, it is our Client Service Managers (CSM) who will listen and gather the details from the caller, be they the patient, family member or a friend. We aim to see new clients within 12-24 hours, either at a Chai centre or at home if they are too ill to come to us, or not yet ready to visit a place associated with cancer. Sometimes a person will walk in straight after receiving their diagnosis, without an appointment.

We ensure there is always someone available to start the process of support.

For, what we provide cannot be replicated anywhere else, not in the private sector nor in the NHS: 58 services focused on the

At an initial consultation, the CSM, who remains their personal contact throughout, discusses with the client, their concerns and talks them through the services relevant to them. Some of these may be unknown, or associated with a spa experience rather than a treatment in a therapeutic setting.

ANSWERING EVERY NEED

One of Chai’s major strengths is that we are able to pick up on needs that are not stated, going beyond what is articulated. With 58 services, we take care to a new level. Those such as counselling may be assumed. However, within that, we provide expertise for children, teens, couples (including psychosexual counselling), families and individuals. Should there be a bereavement, our care continues through individual and group support. Our counsellors are fully qualified and are bound by the British

Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy Practitioners code of practice and ethics.

There is individual support to deal with the physical impact of cancer surgery and treatment, including physiotherapy and gym sessions, manual lymphatic drainage, hypnotherapy and healing.

“Every service has earned its place because of its tangible benefits to clients” All can offer a route back to greater body confidence. Again, every therapist will be professionally qualified with many years of experience in their specific field.

One form of support people may not initially consider is the group approach. It can be hugely transformative and positive in how it connects people in the same situation – not to discuss cancer necessarily, but to be understood through having a shared experience. Our groups, which include mindfulness, meditation, art, jewellery and music workshops, yoga and Pilates, offer physical as well as psychological benefits.

Many of our groups were developed by listening to the needs clients express. One is the BRCA gene support group, prompted by the confusion, fear and potential dilemmas of going through genetic testing and dealing with the results. We are able to support our clients through the process as they consider their options.

AN INFORMED APPROACH

Every Chai service has earned its place because each provides tangible benefits for our clients.

Pivotal to their development is our Medical Advisory Panel, made up of some of the country’s leading surgical, research-based cancer specialists and oncologists.

They inform and guide us on the changing face of cancer treatments, which now thankfully, means many more people are living for longer, albeit with ongoing physical and emotional challenges.

Increasingly our CSMs refer clients to our Medical Outpatient Rehabilitation and Palliative Care Clinic. Here we deal with such issues as extreme fatigue, unmanageable pain, debilitating mouth ulcers and peripheral neuropathy, following surgery and cancer treatment. The clinic is a unique, three-way collaboration between Chai, the Royal Free Hospital Trust and Marie Curie Cancer Care with the goal of supporting survivorship. Clients who have been to the clinic and who continue to be seen have described this as an invaluable service that has made a significant difference to their quality of life.

The support of children where there is cancer in the family, is another area of seamless care. Play, art or music therapy can be delivered at Chai centres or during the day in schools, easing a huge logistical burden, if a parent is unwell, in hospital or at work. Permission from and co-ordination with the school’s SENCO is managed by the CSM. During holidays, sessions are transferred to a Chai centre if possible, to allow for continuity and avoid a gap in appointments.

During a time of great uncertainty, clients often refer to the Chai team as the constant factor in their lives.

At the moment we are supporting 2840 cancer patients and their family members. Hearing that almost daily, is a huge motivation for us to continue to develop services that meet their evolving needs and to provide the seamless care that makes the Chai journey so meaningful and effective. 

A CHILD’S EYE VIEW When a family member is diagnosed with cancer, Chai is there to help children as young as three express their worries and calm their fears.

“I was shocked when I found out Mummy was ill as I remembered hearing bad things about cancer.

I didn’t know what it meant, but seeing Mum and Dad so upset hurt me the most. I decided not to speak to my brother as we probably took the news in different ways and we are different characters.

I was open to speaking about it at Chai, however. I remember playing pool and everything just came out, and suddenly I felt better. At the start of my session I was nervous and by the end I didn’t want to leave.”

“I like seeing Phil because it’s an hour of fun and creativity. In the beginning, we didn’t speak a lot – I just played the drums. But now we talk about everything. Phil has helped me compose music for a song I’ve written, which I will play to Mum and Dad. He has a cool app on his computer that helps us get the music right.”

At first I didn’t like going to Chai. I didn’t want to stay with the play therapist; I wanted to be with Mummy. Gradually I got used to it and I became friendly with Lindsey* who was so warm and friendly and fun. I saw different therapists at Chai as my concerns changed. They helped me feel more in control of my emotions, and realise that there are other people like me with similar fears and worries.”

Reticence, resilience or rage?

The Chai in Schools programme is an initiative running in 23 Jewish primary and secondary schools around the country. It supports children affected by cancer in the family. It also gives teachers and Special Needs Co-ordinators (SENCOs), who may never have encountered this situation, training in how to respond appropriately to the child’s needs as well as those of their classmates who may be unsettled by what is happening. As well as providing play, art and music therapy at its centres, Chai also offers these services to children in schools, an especially practical option for an already stressed and stretched family.

I choose whichever instrument I want to play and Phil helps me play it.

Children are often said to be resilient in the face of a crisis, but that may be a misinterpretation of the reality.

‘If a child is unable to articulate their feelings and keeps things inside, they can become introverted, angry, not sleep, start bed-wetting…’ says Chief Excutive Lisa Steele.

Play, music and art therapy can help children cope better with distressing feelings. ‘Play is a wonderful means of doing this as it’s the child’s natural medium,’ says Chai play therapist Carole Samuels.

From her bag of puppets and toys, family figures, heroes and monsters, a child can choose what they want to play with.

‘They might re-enact recent experiences or make up stories which reveal how they are processing events in their lives,’ says Carole. ‘The goal is

to make the child feel safe so they can explore difficult feelings, make them less overwhelming and rediscover a sense of joyfulness in play.’

Art and craft help children channel difficult emotions, whether that’s bashing some clay (better than bashing a child in the playground) or crafting a worry doll with whom to share or reflect their feelings. Play therapist Darit Punchov, says, ‘Sessions can be chaotic but ultimately they are cathartic, empowering and constructive when a child can understand their feelings and is better able to cope.’

Music also connects a child to their emotions when words won’t easily come. ‘Everyone can hit a drum and through this a child can begin to recognise and “own” the feelings being expressed, which often they don’t even realise they have,’ says Phil Evans, Chai’s music therapist.

Phil might play along, help with a composition – and talking will often follow as trust builds. ‘The process reduces the sense of isolation that often sets in when fear takes hold.’

“We were sat at the kitchen table eating macaroni cheese, and Mummy said, ‘Girls, I need to tell you something. Do you want to hear?’ She told us that she’d had cancer, then said, ‘But I’m all clear now and I’m fine.’ We both started to cry – we had no idea Mummy had cancer, though we knew she had been very sick. We cried because we had relatives who died from cancer.

The news made me feel more worried because I didn’t believe that she was OK.

ANY TIME IS THE RIGHT TIME While there is proven shortand long-term value to the therapeutic process for children, and while some parents may be in favour of it, every child’s response is individual and personal. It may not suit some, or the timing may not be right. Says Lisa, ‘By keeping in touch with the parents and school, we can always step in – and be there for as long as we are needed.’

“When my parents told us about Mum’s illness, it was one of the worst days of my life. We were sitting in a hospital room after her surgery. A million questions went through my mind. What type of cancer was it? How bad could it get?

What had to happen in order for my beautiful Mum to be cured? Why did this have to happen to such an amazing person?

Everything changed at home. Our friends cooked meals for us and my grandparents helped out, looking after my brother and me.

Friends were there for me but I didn’t really talk to anyone. There weren’t the words to describe how I felt. Coming to Chai lifted my spirits.

Everyone is cheerful and welcoming.

I could talk about my feeligs without feeling bad and I looked forward to Thursdays when I could tell Adina* everything I’d been thinking about over the past week.

“I was scared about the operation grandma needed and worried if she would survive. When I met Michelle*, she was kind and caring and we spoke about it. We made a dreamcatcher to help catch the bad dreams I have.”

“I talked to Phil, who is sweet and helpful. He gave me ways to feel better at night, like using an imaginary worry box for my fears and, once a week, discussing them with Mummy. I do plays with Phil and put them to music and I look forward to making new songs for Bubba.”

“I didn’t expect Mummy to lose her hair. It was scary as it’s not natural. Looking at all the other mums made me feel sad.”

Jacob, 8 “My first memory about Mummy being ill is her telling me that she had to get a bad part of her removed. I didn’t really understand. We all went out to eat one evening and Mummy and Daddy brought it up in conversation.

Home life became a bit different. After all her surgeries, Mummy had to rest a lot. We had to go to friends and Daddy took us out quite a bit when he could.

I went to Chai with Mummy to see a play therapist. We didn’t talk much; we played with sand and art materials and we made pictures. I didn’t really feel much at first, but as I got older, my feelings changed. I saw a lady who seemed to understand me and helped me recognise why I sometimes didn’t feel myself, but couldn’t understand why, but that it was OK. The sessions gave me somewhere safe to go, where I could say what I wanted, if I wanted to.”

THE HAIR CARE BUNCH! I

t’s not often that you get permission to dress up for school, but when it’s to fundraise for Chai’s Mad Hair Day – it’s actively encouraged. On 26 May, children from several schools across the UK that we support, festooned their hair with ribbons, bows and baubles, paying £1 each for the pleasure.

The event was devised as a way to lessen the fear around cancer and hair loss, which can be so disturbing to children when it happens to a parent or grandparent. The event raised £1077.

Noa, whose mum Ayelet styled the hair says, ‘I loved Mad Hair Day because I got a great look as Mum’s a professional hair and make-up artist!’

Meanwhile the boys, seen above, in their neon wigs are Moishy, Simmy, and Elie Chippeck who with their mother Mollie, were supported by Chai after their father passed away in 2012. Says Moishe, ‘It was a good, fun day. We loved all the biscuits and apple juice!’

Northern light Chai’s new Manchester hub is providing clients across the northwest with more of the services they need

rom little acorns, they say…

It is only eight years since Chai began providing services in Manchester, responding to requests from the community. Now, in 2017, its original three-room operation at The Fed has expanded into a new state-of-the-art wing with a hugely enhanced range of client-focused services and treatments in a beautiful, calm and uplifting environment – the signature of Chai.

More than 160 supporters from across the northwest came in July, to celebrate the official opening. But as Louise Hager pointed out, it’s joy tinged with the sad recognition that more people are in need of Chai. ‘We were already supporting 350 patients and their family members.

In the few months since opening, almost

70 more have turned to us,’ she said.

Providing services across Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds, she described Chai’s unique role: ‘A place for clients to escape

“I was overwhelmed by this site – it is absolutely wonderful” the world of medical appointments and cancer treatments – where they can feel safe and supported and where everything is focused on their needs; where they can meet, share experiences and even laugh with others who have that bond of understanding from being in a similar situation.’ The facility includes three counselling and three therapy rooms,

a family counselling/group meeting room, fitness suite, therapy kitchen, and a children’s therapy and meeting room.

Louise thanked the Steinberg Family Charitable Trust, and Mark Adlestone OBE, Chairman of The Fed, and his wife Gabrielle for their support. She acknowledged the special relationship that exists between The Fed and Chai as ‘one built on mutual respect, ensuring both organisations retain their identities, independence and the confidence of those who use our services.’ Mark spoke with pride of the longstanding partnership marked by Chai’s first satellite centre.

centre and many more supported the Mezuazh Campaign, which saw Bowdon Synagogue’s Rabbi Dovid Lewis fix the new mezuzah to the front door.

The keynote speech was given by Michael Brada, Professor of Radiation Oncology at the University of Liverpool and member of Chai’s Medical Advisory Panel, who praised Chai for offering ‘everything beyond cancer treatment.’ Present also was the Mayor of Bury, Cllr Dorothy Gunther, who said: ‘I was overwhelmed by this site – it is wonderful and I commend all of those who have funded it and who work within it. Professor Google (and when not to)

You’ve been diagnosed with cancer and you head online and read… and read… and read. But does a deluge of information empower or confuse?

Aneta Kolatorowicz, a Macmillan Patient Information Officer at UCLH, guides us through the medical net

Aneta Kolatorowicz has worked in health information since 2006. She set up the patient network at Imperial College Healthcare NHS in 2009 before moving to Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation to head up a team supporting colleagues developing information for patients. She has won two BMA awards for innovation in patient information. In 2015, Aneta joined the Macmillan Support and Information Service’s cancer information team at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where she has worked closely with clinical teams to ensure information is accessible to anyone at any point of their care.

It doesn’t take long before you realise there’s an overwhelming number of sources out there. Health is the second most searched for topic online*. And you wonder: ‘Which ones can I trust?

And how can I make that judgement?’

UNTANGLING THE WEB

I cannot stress enough that the utmost caution is needed when trawling the Internet following a cancer diagnosis.

Some steps are being put in place to help guide the public. In England, the Department of Health has introduced the Information Standard – a certification scheme for health and social care information. It serves as a ‘quality’ filter to help you decide which information is trustworthy and

Organisations awarded the certification and displaying the quality mark have undergone a rigorous assessment to check that the processes and methods they use to produce their materials are robust and generate information that is accurate, well-written, accessible, impartial and evidence-based.

Unfortunately, only a fraction of the organisations producing cancer information currently have this accreditation. Does this mean other sources aren’t reliable?

When to trust

eing told you have cancer is a lifechanging moment. Not only are you anxious about yourself, but you worry about your family and how whatever comes next will affect them.

So you turn to the Internet to search for answers – usually at 2am, wide awake – willing to trust the best – and the worst – of what you read. You want to be prepared and ahead of the curve for difficult conversations, questions and decisions.

KNOW THE CLUES

Despite there being no simple way to check the reputation of online sources, there are checks to bear in mind: • What type of organisation runs the website? What’s their URL address?

• Is the information evidence-based?

Reliable information is grounded in scientific facts and research studies, and lists references from medical journals. Blogs and forums are great for sharing experiences and for connecting with others,

but remember, these are personal accounts and not based in scientific fact. What has worked for someone else may not necessarily be an appropriate approach for you.

• Is the information up to date?

Look for when the information was published and if it’s more than two years old, it may no longer be accurate. Reliable sites state when their next review is due.

May saw this biennial event return to Hartsbourne Country Club where more than 100 players got down to some fierce competition and phenomenal fundraising.

Organised once again by committee chair Jo Fogel and her enthusiastic team, Mel Rom, Carolyn Joels and Meryl Rosenberg, the event raised £60,000 – adding considerably to the £200,000 raised from the previous four events.

“CHAI CAME TO ME, WHEN I COULDN’T GO TO CHAI” More than a quarter of Chai’s services are now delivered in clients’ homes, reflecting a growing need. Speaking at both golfing events, client Robert Geismar recounted how crucial these services were for him. Diagnosed in 2015 with non-smoker’s lung cancer, which, despite surgery, spread to the brain, he said, ‘I came to Chai in Hendon and found an exceptional environment where I was immediately taken care of. As my situation changed, the Home Support Service ensured I could continue treatments and conserve my energies, with counselling, massage, reflexology and palliative care. In the middle of an unpredictable situation, Chai understood the practical and psychological needs not just of me but of my family, too. They helped contain my distress and relieve my anxiety. They were flexible, compassionate, well organised and never let me down. I can’t stress how vital this was for us all.’

Summer wouldn’t be the same without the annual Club 18 Chai Golf Tournament at Dyrham Park Country Club, now in its twelfth year, having already raised over £350,000. Hosts and co-chairs Ronnie Gottlieb OBE and Michael Lubliner, and committee members Paul Balcombe, Trevor Berkowitz, Jack Galaun, David Joffe, Graham Wainer and Dovi Krok welcomed a record 100 golfers, who not only produced a very high standard of play, but also raised £30,000. 

It could not be better timed either, as Chai has noted more clients requesting just such a service.

he chances of two sisters going through unrelated cancer may be relatively small, but it happened to Tamara Zatman and Daniella Gray.

Tamara had breast cancer, aged 28 in 2012, and Daniella was treated for Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2006, aged 21.

‘When you’ve just been diagnosed, you’re in a very frightening place,’ says Tamara.

‘By fluke, I met someone my age who’d also been through breast cancer. I asked her about her mastectomy, reconstructive surgery, what a CT scan feels like, what kind of pain she had. She was invaluable.’

TELLING IT LIKE IT IS Thankfully, now both in remission, Tamara, an NHS programme manager in Manchester and Daniella, a speech therapist in Israel, felt their experiences highlighted the need for a more structured opportunity to have this kind of oneto-one support. By Your Side, which launched in the summer, is the result of two years’ commitment to their idea.

Family, counsellors, medics, therapists and befrienders all play an important and supportive role, but the sisters say there is a unique empathy and honesty that comes from hearing from someone who has personally been there. ‘They’ve walked the path you’re on,’ says Daniella. ‘Who better to describe the nausea, tell you which foods are easiest to eat? Who else understands the anxiety of losing your hair, or the fear of how a husband will react to you after surgery? This meets a very specific need which doesn’t replace these other sources of support but provides a non-judgemental, reassuring space to air the many questions and concerns clients have on their cancer journey.’

“Volunteers bring understanding and compassion to the role – it’s a powerful way to give back” Everything rests on the sensitive pairing of client and volunteer. By Your Side programme co-ordinator Debra Zender, looks at age and life stage, observance level, and type of cancer and treatment to achieve the best possible match. ‘The training is challenging,’ she says frankly.

‘Volunteers must be at least two years in remission, and be quite resilient, so it’s not for everyone.’ Role-play scenarios range from how to react when the volunteer sees their client socially, to what action to take when the client confides they are feeling overwhelmed and can’t go on any more.’

Five volunteers, including one man, have already qualified. ‘They bring such understanding and compassion to the role – it’s a powerful way to give back,’ says Debra. Whether contact is regular, ad-hoc, face-to-face or over the telephone, both client and volunteer sign a contract, which sets out the scope of the relationship. Chai’s duty of care is always to both its clients and volunteers.

What happens when you assume…

Joyce Misrahi’s experience of cancer is a lesson in becoming selfaware – the hard way. This is how she learned to ask for help

S

eated on a modern grey wool sofa in her pristine St John’s Wood home, blonde hair tipped in funky pink, Damian Hirsts on the walls, Joyce Misrahi radiates megawatt energy and has a lightening quick delivery, as keen as her animated hazel eyes. Who would doubt her ability to cope? Heavens, in between surgeries for her breast cancer in 2011 and 2012, she flew from New York to London to attend a friend’s birthday party, went straight from chemo to Courcheval and, shortly after, hosted 350 people for her son Simon’s bar mitzvah at the Kotel. When I ask Joyce if she realised what she was putting herself through, her voice suddenly stills. She replies simply, ‘No.’ Born of a Romanian mother and Chilean father who divorced when she was five, Joyce, 48, grew up in Chile and the US and recalls a childhood punctuated by remarriages, new children and split loyalties. ‘It was tough, disruptive and upsetting.’ At 11, she chaperoned her younger brother on the Greyhound bus between home in New York and Washington DC where her father lived. ‘I was 5”6’ tall, people assumed I was older… and capable.’

Not that Joyce gave any other impression. Her get-on-and-do attitude must have been hardwired early on and probably explains some of the serendipitous and contrary events that have accented her life. Such as… insisting on going to church after her mother, who ran an atheist household, remarried a practicing Catholic. ‘I needed a place of prayer.’ (She refused to kneel or eat the communion wafer, however.) Such as, deciding to learn the contents of a Hebrew library book she was drawn to in the Lycée Francaise library in her first year at school in Washington DC. ‘I may have grown up with Easter and Christmas but clearly I was born with a Jewish heart!’

“Chai understood me and everything that was going through my mind” Then there was the Chabad rabbi on campus at Boston University – where she was studying international relations, economics and art history – who handed her a travelling Chanukiah and Shabbat candles, saying ‘You need to light these.’ Joyce, rather a believer in signs, began taking a greater interest in Judaism.

And, despite a top-notch degree, New York’s banking edifice proved difficult to scale. ‘Women

especially, had this Legally Blonde assumption about me.’ Tellingly Joyce adds, ‘I’ve felt it all my life.’

A chance encounter with the Vice President of Bergdorf Goodman led instead to her running designer boutiques and a role as a personal shopper helping, amongst other customers, Orthodox women stay modest and modish.

Always more Mediterraneanminded than Mittel-European, at 22 Joyce set about finding herself a Sephardi husband with whom to create the family unit she dreamed of. It was a slow burn with Edward Misrahi, a Madridborn, Princeton graduate and Goldman Sachs high-flyer. ‘He was too smart, too nerdy, and too young,’ says Joyce [he’s a year her junior], but slowly best mates became soulmates and they were married in December 1995.

By their 15th wedding anniversary, and with four sons – Simon, Max, Daniel and Elijah, the family had been in London for six years for Edward’s work. Joyce had a social niche, was chair of the Bicom Dinner committee and a member of the Spanish and

Portuguese Synagogue in Maida Vale. Trying – and failing – to conceive their fifth child, Joyce woke one December morning ‘knowing I had breast cancer.’

It proved to be true and there followed two years riven with seven surgeries for breast cancer and reconstructive work and six months of chemo. Misdiagnoses, failed protocols and mid-surgery discoveries that led to a mastectomy, don’t bear repeating.

Looking back, Joyce can see how the traumas were building. She acknowledges now, ‘There was no processing. I was in overdrive…

I had no hair, no eyebrows, no eyelashes, But I had four kids and a husband to look after. Shabbat dinner was always on the table.’

It wasn’t until the third round of reconstructive surgery in New York that Joyce’s coping mechanisms began to fail. ‘I suddenly realised what was happening to me and imploded. I spent a day and half paralysed, unable to breathe in a hotel room.’ As Joyce recalled in a speech at the Chai Dinner last December, ‘Most of my friends did not realise I was in such a

dark place as I looked OK on the outside. But on the inside I was being tortured. It’s very hard for me to ask for help. I’m usually the one helping others.’

Finally realising she did need support, she had no idea where to turn. Well-recommended counsellors didn’t have the expertise she needed. ‘And no one thought to recommend Chai.

Maybe my friends thought I was better and had moved on. But I kept looking for somewhere and finally, in 2013, I found Chai and called them. From the moment I walked in there,

they helped me regain my inner strength. They understood me and everything going through my mind.’

Now able to articulate her needs, Joyce is a major supporter and ambassador for Chai, as well as a volunteer for Chai’s new By Your Side service. This pairs clients who have experienced cancer with those starting their journey, to answer questions beyond the medical arena. ‘Chai is a sanctuary for all ages. Having everything in one place allows all your concerns to be taken care of.

I have travelled a lot and I have not seen anything, anywhere that does what Chai does. I went to hell and back but now I’ve got something to give to others.’ There she goes again, being capable…

of breast cancer and to support Chai. Using social media, they raised £17,000! Simon also used the experience of setting up the event to write an essay as part of his successful application to NYU.

saw me at home, which is an amazing thing in itself.

Working with him, I developed enough confidence to come to Chai’s gym where I saw another physio, Johnny. My first session worked on core stability and, even though I was very out of breath after the session, I was on cloud nine!

I couldn’t wait for session two.

I came every week from October to December 2016.

Each visit left me feeling amazed at my progress: spending longer on a machine or adding in more floor work.

Slowly but surely, I started to walk on a running machine, then cycle, then row and use weights. I began to have faith in my body again. Eventually, Johnny wrote out a plan for me to do at my own gym.

Laura Moses, 28, saw physiotherapist Johnny at Chai’s gym in Hendon last year I’d recently joined a gym and really liked all the different classes. It was during a legs, bums and tums class, I remember my stomach feeling strange. Odd to think that was ‘Cyril’ – my name for my cancer – making himself known. A few months later I was having surgery for stage-three ovarian cancer, six rounds of chemo and radical debunking surgery. My recovery was phenomenal: six days in hospital instead of the estimated three weeks. But leaving hospital, I was immobile and had a huge scar down my abdomen. Isolated at home, my confidence plummeted.

It’s hard to put into words just how special Chai is to me. Graham, one of the physios,

I cried tears of joy in our last session, because I was about to conquer this looming fear, and go back to my own gym. Johnny reminded me that he was there if I ever needed him. The first time back in my gym was very emotional.

I realized recovery takes time and patience. It takes everything you’ve got mentally and physically. I don’t know what I would have done without Johnny and Chai. Cancer took away the confidence I had, and Chai gave it back to me.

“Cancer took away my confidence, Chai gave it back to me” Fully supervised one-to-one gym sessions are available at Chai’s Hendon and North Manchester centres. Physiotherapists also visit clients at home.

Benjamin Black, 33 from Didsbury, South Manchester, used Chai’s Home Services while being treated for Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2016 Life was pretty normal last summer, except for some lower back pain, the result, I thought, of an exercise class. Physio temporarily relieved the dull ache but an MRI scan to investigate it further revealed something more alarming: swollen lymphs in my abdomen and lesions on my pelvic bones. A further scan and two biopsies later confirmed Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It was a weird month, not knowing what was wrong with me. Yet strangely, it was a relief when I did. Of all the possible diagnoses, Hodgkin’s lymphoma was the best. Mum had had it 20 years ago and she was fine.

I began fortnightly cycles of chemo for 24 weeks: four drugs, administered by drip, which went in through a port in my chest. Chemo affects everyone differently.

My side effects included a foggy head and tiredness, and I lost my hair and moustache, though strangely, not my beard. I had aches and pains, stomach problems caused by steroids, my nails

Joyce Misrahi, a former Chai client, welcomed the 750 guests, and pulled no punches as she described her own cancer journey. ‘My life changed forever… with the four words: you have breast cancer.’ She recalled how putting a brave face on it for her family caused almost unbearable trauma, and how ‘Chai was my saviour. It is exceptional and quite extraordinary.’ The appeal film that followed featured Caroline and Martin Bercott, alongside 28 clients, across all generations, affected by a cancer diagnosis: children, grandchildren, parents and partners all supported by Chai with care, compassion and professionalism. Louise Hager paid tribute to Susan Shipman and Frances Winegarten z’l for the impact they made on the community as co-founders of an organisation, that has, over the years, supported tens of thousands of people.

Back by popular demand for a second time, internationally acclaimed mentalist Lior Suchard charmed and bamboozled guests with his mind-reading entertainment, and Nick Leslau thanked the capacity-filled room of supporters for the impact their donations would have on those who use Chai.

Indeed he was right – the Impact Dinner raised an impressive £1.1m.

Having massage and reflexology as a complement to the unpleasant drugs, was priceless, giving me positive ‘me’ time. That regular appointment was a vital element of routine and the consistency of seeing someone who cared and knew what my body could take made me feel very safe.

“Having this resource in our community, I never felt I was talking to strangers” I also had counselling at home. That horrendous month when I didn’t know what was wrong with me took its toll. I have been able to vent, express my frustration and anxieties and my counsellor, Anita*, has helped me reflect, given me perspective and offered me coping strategies including mindfulness and stress management.

To have been able to access this kind of resource at home when I was ill makes Chai more than a ‘nice to have’. It’s been an essential source of strength.

A large number of services are available within the Home Support Service including counselling, complementary therapies, dietary advice and physiotherapy.

After breast cancer in 2013 Gillian Kodish, 77, began using Chai’s Medical Outpatient Rehabilitation and Palliative Care Service, which is run in collaboration with The Royal Free Foundation NHS Trust and Marie Curie Cancer Care I can virtually see the Chai building from my maisonette in Hendon, but I didn’t go until after my diagnosis and treatment. It was shock enough to have the cancer. I had a lumpectomy on both breasts: 15 lymph nodes taken from my right side and 29 from my left side, only one of which was cancerous. Unfortunately, the treatment left me with very bad lymphoedema – chronic, painful swelling in my left arm and breast – for which I have to wear a compression sleeve all the time. It affects how I dress, my movements and it makes me very hot, too.

I also developed an abscess after surgery, which meant going back to hospital to be opened up, cleaned and stitched up again. The resulting scar tissue causes me a constant stinging pain. My surgeon

My client services manager Jodie arranged for me to see the palliative care consultant Dr Rachel Craig. She gave me the time to talk through the effects of the cancer treatment – time you don’t often get in hospital. She dealt with my most complex needs, as well as my most practical, like finding non-allergic plasters for my scars – no-one had done that for me. Sallyann, whom I see for manual lymphatic drainage, is another lynchpin. She keeps my lymphoedema under better control. After a session, I feel such relief even though it’s a lifelong condition. Seeing a physio, too, has helped boost my overall fitness. I loathe exercise but Graham was so motivating that I persevered. ‘Don’t let me give up,’ I said to him – and he didn’t.

“Dr Craig dealt with my most complex needs as well as my most practical” Chai’s palliative care is such a unique resource and a complete circle of support for me. It’s reassuring, too, for my son who lives abroad and my daughter who has a busy career. Even though I’m at Chai because of cancer, when I’m there I feel like a normal person. I couldn’t exist without it.  The Medical Outpatient Rehabilitation and Palliative Care Service provides support to help clients cope with the symptoms of cancer or the side-effects of surgery and treatment, and works with surgeons, oncologists and GPs.

My doctor mentioned Macmillan and Maggie’s, but I knew someone at Chai so gave them a ring. Having this resource in our community, that understands Jewish family dynamics and culture, is really heartening. I never felt I was talking to strangers. Client services managers Johanne and Gerry visited me to explain what Home Support Services could do while I was too ill to leave the house. What so impressed me was how they consulted with my haemotologist before starting. I was also reassured by their confidentiality policies.

alerie Nead, 86-years-young, is living proof that having something in common with people, even if that something is cancer, can be a positive thing. For her, the Club has been essential. ‘I have incurable cancer and had been feeling quite alone and in a dark hole. My GP advised me to go to Chai. I wasn’t sure I could even get through the door, and I certainly never imagined the welcome could be so warm. I just felt my tension drain away. There was a singer performing that Wednesday. And you know what? I threw away my stick and got up and danced! I have been strengthened by being with people who’ve had similar experiences. It’s a club nobody wants to join. But oh my, when you do, you’re in the right place!’

The volunteers behind the club are Lynne Silver and Barbara Freedman, who both felt compelled to give something very directly to those who had been touched by cancer. Their fortnightly programme of events has been running for 11 years and features talks (from local Mayors and historians, JPs, writers, film directors and Holocaust survivors to name

writer). ‘I have seen many friendships made through our afternoons so its value extends beyond fortnightly meetings. It’s a lifeline for many.’

Far removed from TV entertainment, clinical hypnotherapy is now endorsed by the NHS, and taught at specialist cancer hospital, The Christie.

Chai practitioners Linda Swimer and Hayley Miles explain how it works Q. How can clinical hypnotherapy help a person with cancer?

LS: It can ease the everyday struggles you may experience when you have cancer: nausea, pain, sleep problems, anxiety, panic attacks, needle phobia.

Hypnotherapy helps build you up to be able to cope.

LS: Our conscious minds are just the ‘tip of the tongue’ of consciousness.

I deal with everything else – the rest of the tongue! I address the current issue the client brings to me, though I may be shifting beliefs that are rooted in the past.

HM: It can quell claustrophobia brought on by MRI scans, help with weight loss or gain following treatment, and balance hormones affected by drugs. It may boost confidence, reduce stress and enhance the healing process.

Q: What happens in a session?

Q. How does hypnotherapy work?

HM: The process bypasses our conditioned negative thinking to create new, positive neural pathways. Engaging the unconscious mind stimulates the

Though relaxed, clients are aware throughout and can talk.

LS: Sessions start with deep breathing, a technique the client can use anywhere.

Then I gently describe scenarios with positive outcomes, for instance, packing and putting away a suitcase of destructive thoughts. Sessions last an hour.

Q: Why did you become a hypnotherapist?

LS: I used to work for the Citizens Advice Bureau. Hypnotherapy cured my daughter of severe travel sickness so I was drawn to it, as I still wanted to work with people. I’ve been practicing for 13 years.

HM: I suffered with juvenile arthritis. Aged 14, I saw a hypnotherapist who helped me deal with my pain and confidence issues.

It transformed me. I’m now a Master Practitioner in clinical hypnotherapy.  Three to six sessions of hypnotherapy are recommended.

Demystifying mastectomy

Being told you have breast cancer is often accompanied by the news you may have to lose one or both breasts. Consultant Breast and Oncoplastic Surgeon Jo Franks offers guidance and reassurance at this critical time

Her particular interests are the detection of early breast cancers, oncoplastic breast conservation, family history, risk reduction, screening and – where mastectomy is necessary – reconstructive surgery.

very 10 minutes in the UK, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer and four in ten of those will undergo a mastectomy as part of their treatment. Others may elect for a mastectomy if they are at high risk of developing a breast cancer in the future, for instance, if they have the BRCA gene.

And every one of those women will react to the loss of their breast in a different way. It is as personal as their diagnosis and treatment.

Qualifying from Imperial College with honours, she spent the latter part of her training in the Oncoplastic Breast Unit and Macmillan Cancer Centre at UCLH. Miss Franks has an interest in assessment and training and, having completed an MSc in Medical Education, standard-sets for University College London and the Royal Free Hospital Medical School.

In addition she works with the General Medical Council and is one of their Medical Assessors.

In the last decade, we have seen an evolution in all aspects of breast cancer treatment and surgical options. Most significantly, at the start of the process, the maximum waiting time for being seen on the NHS for suspected cancer is two weeks from the day of your GP appointment, when booked through the NHS e-Referral Service, or when the hospital or service receives your referral letter. A second opinion is also an option via the NHS as is the choice of which consultant-led team oversees your treatment. A new emphasis on individualised care means all patients

facing a mastectomy should have access to a surgical consultant with reconstructive skills to give advice regarding their options for breast reconstruction. This should take place

The reconstructive options may be influenced by the initial presentation of the cancer at diagnosis, the response to any treatment, the patient’s physique, general health and any pre-existing medical conditions as well as their desires and expectations.

a patient-centric treatment plan for the breast cancer surgery. However, there is no emotional map to guide you through the anxiety, uncertainty and sense of loss when facing breast surgery. Moreover, the increased number of treatment options can feel complex and daunting, just when you are at your most vulnerable.

INFORMATION IS EVERYTHING My strongest advice is to gather in all the pertinent information and give yourself time. Patients tell me they often feel rushed when things are moving so fast between diagnosis and surgery, so arming yourself with knowledge is paramount.

During this process, your clinical nurse specialist, an experienced nurse who works within the breast unit, is a vital link in helping you understand your options.

They should be with you every step of the journey, acting as an information source, a support, an advocate and a sounding board. This makes a big difference in how your treatment will progress as patients benefit from having a good therapeutic partnership with their breast team.

In general terms, breast reconstruction can happen at different points in your treatment pathway. Immediate reconstructions take place at the time of your mastectomy and during the same operation. Delayed reconstructions can take place months or even years after the mastectomy. This may be recommended if additional treatments (chemotherapy/ radiotherapy) are planned after the breast

surgery. Some women may feel they require more time to recover from their cancer treatment before considering breast reconstruction.

SOONER OR LATER? Studies show that breast reconstruction at the time of mastectomy can play an important part in improving emotional recovery and psychological wellbeing in the first year after breast surgery.

Many women will have chosen breast reconstruction because their breasts are an important part of their body image, self-esteem and sexuality. Others choose it so that they won’t need to wear a breast prosthesis, or they feel it will make them more confident or feminine. Others still may decide not to go for reconstruction at all – again, it is your choice.

For those opting for reconstructive surgery, there are two main types of breast(s) operations. The simplest is breast reconstruction with implants. In the immediate setting, the implant is used to fill the preserved skin envelope.

It adds one to two hours to the operation length when compared to a mastectomy without reconstruction. There are rarely additional scars and the recovery is shorter than the other reconstructive options. Breast implants may give a less natural feel and aesthetic outcome and the other breast may require surgery to aid symmetry. Implant reconstruction does not prevent additional local treatments such as radiotherapy but the long-term result may be affected.

An alternative procedure, known as autologous reconstruction, uses your own tissue which is transferred from a different area on your body, such as your lower abdomen, back, thigh or buttock, to create the breast. This approach can more easily match the shape, size and ptosis (droop) of the original breast and it feels more natural. However, the operation is more complex, as long as eight to ten hours, as well as resulting in more areas of scarring.

The urge to decide on a surgical plan as quickly as possible should not be at the expense of the essential personal information a woman needs to make her choices regarding reconstructive options. If patients are suitable for all reconstructive options but feel uncertain, it is better to elect first for the simplest option, such as an implant, as this can always be exchanged for an autologous reconstruction at a later date.

What a difference a day makes Life changes suddenly with a cancer diagnosis.

MOTIVATION: My friend, Noa, 35, is going through cancer. I wanted to do something that would help people in that situation.

HOW TOUGH WAS IT? At certain points, a real struggle. The terrain was rocky and steep and it was mentally demanding, thinking about every single step you took.

REFLECTIONS: What people go through with cancer was very present in our minds and there was a great sense of unity. The day we set out, Noa was having chemo.

Before we left she said she was getting strength from us.

PEAK MOMENTS: The arrival. It was breathtaking, even in the rain. At the top of Scafell Pike, we stopped, looked and laughed in the face of our pain. Coming back to my kids, my husband, and an Epsom salts bath, I felt very grateful.

MOTIVATION: I lost both parents to cancer. Chai has been an extra blanket for my mother, my siblings and I during incredibly vulnerable times. Alex Maurice (who devised Chai Challenges You) is a dear friend and was very close to my late mum.

MOTIVATION: Four years ago my son was diagnosed with a brain tumour. We were just moving to the UK and we found Chai. There’s no way I can give back what we’ve received. This teeny effort is far from adequate.

HOW TOUGH WAS IT? I didn’t train very much and discovered I’m no Bear Grylls!

It went way beyond what I thought it would, emotionally and physically, with 40mph winds, rain and no visibility.

HOW TOUGH WAS IT? Training changed my eating habits and I lost 2½ stone, but the experience was very gruelling. When I couldn’t walk any more, and was losing my balance, everyone supported me – so I schlepped myself through!

REFLECTIONS: Collective action is very powerful and committing to this challenge as a group touched everyone in different ways. In those big open spaces, I felt my insignificance and recognised how I am privileged to be able to help people going through life-changing times.

PEAK MOMENTS: Despite bad food and appalling conditions, we kept our sense of humour. It made me feel so alive!

REFLECTIONS: My Israeli family couldn’t understand it. They said, ‘We’ll give money to the charity, you don’t need to climb’. But it was about me showing solidarity with those going through tough times.

PEAK MOMENTS: I loved Scafell Pike, it was a phenomenal experience, like walking through one of G-d’s paintings.

She started it…

Founder of MOTIVATION: My father-in-law passed away just over a year ago from cancer, so this was for him and for all the other people who receive support from Chai.

HOW TOUGH WAS IT? After 12 hours walking on day one, I was exhausted.

The next day the weather was extremely unkind and within an hour, my whole body was wet, despite wearing waterproofs. I had to concentrate on my breathing to distract myself from the pain in my legs.

REFLECTIONS: I knew I’d feel fine afterwards but I have witnessed the suffering of cancer and it is unimaginable, so I have no regrets about putting myself through this.

PEAK MOMENTS: Writing a cheque is the easy option. There’s empowerment when you do things. It gives you a platform for facing other obstacles.

Chai Challenges You MOTIVATION: My dear friend Lisa Berg’s mother, Bella Shapiro used Chai’s services – and more recently my sister-in-law, Amanda, before she passed away from breast cancer. A group of northwest London Jewish women putting themselves out of their comfort zone is a good way to raise money.

HOW TOUGH WAS IT? We were out at 6am on day one and didn’t finish until 9pm, having done 11 peaks. We were all shocked at how hard-going it was. What were we thinking?!

REFLECTIONS: I’ve learned we’re capable of far more than we realise.

Hearing about people’s brushes with cancer, I felt both humbled and high.

I thought, ‘We’re here, we’re doing it, and thank G-d we can!’

PEAK MOMENTS: Every time we got to the top of a peak, we cheered and took a photo. Getting out of my wet clothes was also fantastic.

MOTIVATION: I can’t ask people for money unless it’s for something they wouldn’t want to do. This sounded suitably hard.

HOW TOUGH WAS IT? The ground was rocky and uneven so there was a lot of scrambling with our hands.

The up hills were steep but the downs were even steeper. And the second day was revolting.

REFLECTIONS: The first evening, we sat round the table telling each other why we were there. These challenges test you and you have to dig deep into your soul to push yourself on. It’s an interesting process, which takes you out of your bubble.

PEAK MOMENT: Meeting such a fantastic group of personalities!

Everyone harmonised and there were no egos. We all had a reason to be there, which put us in a good place. 

utumn’s sassiest looks arrived right on time in Finchley last September when former Chai clients, volunteers and supporters joined professional models on the runway to showcase outfits from Averyl in Temple Fortune and raise money for Chai.

Favourite labels such as Boss, Luisa Cerano, Escada, D Exterior, Paule Ka, Max Mara and more, were brilliantly styled by Averyl and her team, who always put heart and soul into the joyous, up-beat production.

If there had been rafters to hang from at the pretty-in-purple Kinloss Banqueting suite, guests surely would have. Sumptuous cocktails, an East/ West-inspired menu from Food Story, heavenly flowers and goody bags made everyone feel truly indulged. But the message of the day was always present.

he legendary status of this year’s Spa Day hit new heights with the presence of guest speaker, Vogue International Editor, Suzy Menkes OBE. Dressed in a diaphanous Christopher Kane frock, Ms Menkes shared her thoughts with 130 women on making it to the top of the fashion journalism tree, how clothes reflect the politics of the time, why couture costs and the size zero debate. ‘It was heart warming to give this speech surrounded by so much energy and all the love this organisation brings together,’ said Ms Menkes afterwards.

Her talk was the memorable centrepiece of a day blessed with sunshine, heartfelt testimonies and an overwhelming warmth of spirit, which raised more than £35,000 for Chai’s Image Resource Service.

Guests were welcomed by Karen Goodkind who conceived the Chai Spa Day event in 2008 as a way of highlighting the lifechanging self-image issues faced by those going through cancer. Her family has been touched by cancer several times and Karen believes the day of therapeutic treatments gives an insight into their enormous value

Chai helped me, my husband and daughter and it’s a privilege to have their love and support.’ Joyce Misrahi thanked everyone present for their generosity on the day. 

Immunotherapy is becoming one of the most promising – and rapidly developing –strategies for cancer treatment. Professor of Cancer Medicine at Barts Cancer Institute Peter Schmid looks at the latest advances

C Professor Peter Schmid’s specialist cancer interests are breast and lung cancer, cancer immune therapy and early drug development, including biomarker-driven clinical trial strategies to develop new treatment approaches.

He was appointed as Chair in Cancer Medicine at Barts Cancer Institute, Queen Mary University London, in 2013 and is Clinical Director of the Breast Cancer Centre at the St. Bartholomew Cancer Centre and Honorary Consultant Medical Oncologist at Barts Hospital. Professor Schmid is also Lead of the Centre of Experimental Cancer Medicine at Barts Cancer Institute and the Barts/Brighton Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre. He leads the academic breast cancer programmes and the cancer immune therapy group at Barts Cancer Institute.

Professor Schmid has successfully led more than 20 national/ international academic clinical studies and has authored or co-authored 165 publications.

ancer immunotherapy is transforming the treatment and outcome of cancers in an unprecedented way. The therapy refers to any treatment that modifies and enhances the patient’s own immune system to fight and potentially eliminate cancers.

Recent developments with immune therapy have shown substantial improvements in survival for a range of cancers, including aggressive cancer types, which had always been very difficult to treat. Equally important, these treatments are generally well tolerated and don’t have many of the side effects of conventional chemotherapy which can have such a substantial impact on a patient’s quality of life. This has led to the approval of several new immunotherapy treatments as well as the integration of immunotherapy into routine cancer treatments.

THE VITAL CONNECTIONS

Although the principle of immunotherapy had been investigated for nearly a century, it has only recently fulfilled its enormous promise. These advances have been made possible through our increasing understanding of the complex relationship between the immune system and human cancer. One of the key discoveries that allowed the development of immunotherapy was that cancers can send signals that block killer T-cells, a type of immune cell, which fights cancer and other diseases.

The immune system is the body’s main defence system against potentially damaging external influences. It is trained to tolerate and protect what is considered our own body or ‘normal’ cells, and to tackle any cell or organism that is recognised as foreign. The ability of our immune system to detect and fight cancer cells is largely based on two aspects. Firstly, the immune system has to recognise cancer cells as being ‘different’ from normal cells; the ‘foreigness’ of cancer cells is a critical factor in the immune response and is determined by changes in the composition and structure of proteins on the cell surface sometimes caused by underlying abnormalities in genes. Interestingly, aggressive cancer types are often more different from normal tissues, making these cancers excellent candidates for immunotherapy strategies. The second determinant of the body’s immune response is its ability to change the number and function of immune cells when needed.

The complex mechanisms behind the activation of the immune system are now being deciphered. Normally the body tightly regulates its immune system to enable an appropriate response to threats but also to

prevent over-stimulation, which could result in the immune system attacking the body through autoimmune diseases. A critical role

in the regulation of the immune response to cancers is played by ‘immune checkpoints’ and in particular to a receptor on immune cells called PD-1. Activation of PD-1 through its binding ligand PD-L1, which is often expressed on cancer cells, can inactivate T-cells and halt the immune system.

TREATMENT THAT TURNS THE TABLES This process can be used therapeutically in the form of immune checkpoint inhibitors.

These new drugs can stop the cancer-induced immune blockade and unleash instead killer T-cells, to attack the cancer.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors are the most commonly used form of immunotherapy. Four immune checkpoint inhibitors have been approved so far to treat advanced melanoma and cancers of the lung, bladder and

kidney, where they have shown significant responses and substantial improvements in survival compared to chemotherapy. In the US, immune checkpoint inhibitors have also been approved for head and neck cancers, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Merkel cell carcinoma (a rare form of skin cancer), and tumours with a high rate of genetic instability. These drugs are also being tested in breast cancer and other cancer types.

Early results in these cancers have also been promising.

Some patients with advanced cancers have experienced remissions with immune checkpoint inhibitors that have lasted for years, raising the hope of a potential cure, even at advanced stages. Despite these significant advances, not all patients currently respond to treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors and new strategies are being tested, including combinations of different immune therapies or combinations with standard chemotherapy.

Cell-based therapies involve taking immune cells from the patient, modifying them in a laboratory to better recognise and tackle the patient’s cancer, and giving them back to the patient in the form of a transfusion. Another immunotherapy strategy is the development of cancer-specific vaccines. These have recently come back into our focus as they now seem to be able to overcome some of the previous limitations when used in combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors.

Many oncologists and scientists believe that these recent advances are the beginning of a new era.

Sponsored by Rowntree Real Estate, stalls tempted buyers with modern Judaica, personalised gifts, jewellery and milinery.

The event raised £43,000.

A packed year of events has covered the gamut of informative, fun and heartwarming

organised by Rabbi Nir Nadav, wife Jessica and 10-year-old son, Netanel Zvi who have been supported by Chai. People of every age took to the track on all sorts of cycles from tandems to penny-farthings, raising £2500.

Year 8 Hasmonean High School girls Rivka Shaerf and friend Rebecca Saunders hosted a Bake Sale, raising £750. They ‘baked for bucks’ after Rivka’s great grandmother and her close friends were supported by Chai.

Also baking, Ella Frankfurt, Mia Harris and Noga Ebrahimoff from the Independent Jewish Day School, put their chefs’ hats on for a cake sale, raising an impressive £134.

DECEMBER

This sell-out event organised by Manchester’s Chai Lights Committee saw Whitefield Golf Club transformed into a disco through the decades. All-night dance fun and a fish ‘n’ chip supper raised over £3000 for Manchester Chai.

The Chai Five Committee hit the sweet spot with their Bake Off competition, raising £1000. Hosted by Liza Feiner, Melissa Taylor, Aviva Braunold and Tarryn Chonin, fifty guests enjoyed a dessert buffet created by home bakers and saw Rivka Benarroch take the crown with a perfect peach pavlova.

ARTY, CRAFTY LADIES NIGHT

Rebbetzin Tanya Garber of Shenley United Synagogue hosted a Pre-Chanukah Ladies Evening held for the refuah shleima of Mason Clifton, with funds going to Chai and Camp Simcha. A raffle, Chanukah market and a ceramics workshop raised £1165.

There was also enthusiastic support from youngsters (below), who handed out flyers in Golders Green promoting the Gift Sale.

SUCCESS ON THE CARDS

Stanmore Synagogue was packed out as 130 avid bridge and Kalooki players enjoyed an evening hosted by Debra Levin and Nicki Marks in memory of Lesley Feldman z”l.

The evening raised £1600.

This year GIFT, which helps families in need, was Chai’s chosen charity for Mitzvah Day. Staff, volunteers and clients donated unused toiletries for distribution to the community. In turn, Chai received yummy goodies from the Village Shul Hampstead baked by Rebbetzin Devorah Leah Weisz and her Cheder group, and chocolates from Pinner Synagogue.

THE NATALIE SHIPMAN MEMORIAL LECTURE

The next generation of treatments was the fascinating topic of the 26th lecture in this series. ‘Understanding cancer’s complexity – its implications for the future of new drug treatments’, was delivered by Charles Swanton, Professor of Cancer Medicine, University College London Hospitals and Cancer Institute and Senior Group Leader, The Francis Crick Institute.

THE RHYTHM OF CHAI LIFE

Chai said thank you to its dedicated volunteers, by treating them to a drum workshop by Joo Doo Drums. Beat that!

ADELE AT SHABBATON CONCERT The beauty of music and the sanctity of prayer were enjoyed at a Shabbaton Choir concert at the United Hebrew Congregation in Leeds. Organised by Alan Benstock, Val Berwin, Adele Manning and Andrew Ullman, the choir’s repertoire included L’Cha Dodi and an Adon Olam medley.

Following the concert, which raised £600, Adele said, ‘The choir were magnificent and the event was a huge success!’ (And you thought it was the other Adele…?)

SEPARATES BUT CONNECTED Each year Linda Cohen and Ruth Isaacs host a clothing sale in aid of Chai at Linda Cohen’s home. This year it raised £150.

MAY IT’S SHOWTIME! Featuring dancers and singers as young as four, Gabby Niman’s Musical Showcase at the Cube Theatre, Bushey Academy, attracted over 150 people and raised £250.

JANUARY DEBORAH’S COMEDY CAPER

Strictly The Laughter Factor, a mash-up of talent shows, hit Leeds when Deborah Judah, with nine other brave non-comedians performed a stand-up routine to an audience of 200. Deborah received Chai support when she had bowel cancer two years ago. Despite claiming she isn’t funny, Deborah raised £1008 – and many laughs.

At the Purim Fair for Chai at JFS, pupils didn’t hold back, enjoying candyfloss on tap, an ice cream van, a raffle, and best of all, throwing wet sponges at teachers.

Six JFS Hospitality and Catering BTEC students presented a ‘Hospitality and the Chocolate Factory’ lunch for staff and sixth formers, raising £500. Eighteen-year olds Matty Caplin, Olivia Curwen, Ari Grossman, Erika Moss, Ben Orenstein and Gabriella Sugarman, served up delicious cakes and steaming hot chocolate to those who purchased a ‘Golden Ticket’. Ben said, ‘we chose Chai in memory of one of our teachers, Mr Angus, who sadly passed away from cancer recently.’

Talented (and expanding) a capella group, The 4 Sons – George Rosenfeld, 17, Asher Levy and Gideon Caplan, both 18, Rafi Levy 16, Dov Forman, 13 and Shimon Hurst, 9 – spieled their beat-box ‘Purim Thrills’ show all the way from South Hampstead and The Village Shuls, to seudot in 28 homes in northwest London in aid of Chai, Emunah and WaterAid: £5838 was raised for Chai. ‘My family feels very close to Chai because of the care my grandfather received,’ said Asher.

Wednesday Afternoon Club devotee Miriam Young pitted her passion for the Julia Roberts/Richard Gere classic Pretty Woman against a Mastermind-style quiz devised by fellow club members. Friends, family and Miriam made donations for each correct answer, and with an impressive score of 29 out of 31, £650 was raised.

A LEGACY FOR GEORGE AND MARYLIN Turning loss into a positive takes extraordinary strength as friends Lauren Goldstone and Natalie Verrey (pictured), recently discovered. Natalie lost her mother Marylin, aged 62 and Lauren’s husband George, passed away at 32, a just a year into their marriage.

Chai supported both families.

The friends wanted to do something proactive in response. First there was a gig in March, by The Brickets, in which Natalie’s father plays, plus musical contributions from friends and family.

‘Turning something emotional into a practical event gave me some control in my life again,’ says Lauren. In April, the friends also climbed Machu Picchu. ‘A little more training wouldn’t have gone amiss’, admits Lauren, ‘but we had enough raincoats for every scenario!’ This month saw the most poignant tribute – the GG3v3 basketball tournament. ‘It was George’s passion,’ says Lauren. Fellow player and organiser Martin Dyan adds, ‘It was a celebration of George’s drive, loyalty and generosity.’ Money raised now tops £16,000 split between Chai, St Francis Hospice and Macmillan. Says Lauren, ‘George was the most courageous man.

He touched my life in infinite ways and I want to raise as much money as I can in his memory.’

GLASGOW GIRLS DO IT AGAIN Holding their third Bridge Lunch at Chai’s flagship centre in Hendon, the Glasgow Girls in London raised £2735.

JUNE RISING TO THE OCCASION Volunteer Reva Kahn hosted the first Challah Bake for Chai clients at the Hendon centre. Everyone enjoyed the warming aromas which filled the building that day.

JULY EVERY PENNY COUNTS Our loyal and much appreciated Pennies From Heaven Committee has raised £4100 this year, which will go towards equipment for the gym at Chai, Hendon.

In June, Chai Five Committee members, Liza Feiner, Melissa Taylor, Aviva Braunold and Tarin Chonin organised an exotic cocktail kiddush followed by a Hawaiianthemed lunch for 60 guests, raising £770.

STRICTLY DANCING More than 170 Dance For Life supporters gathered at Oakington Manor School, Wembley for the 15th annual Israeli Dance Marathon and Party, raising £6000 for Chai Cancer Care and Cancer Research UK. Highlights included guest choreographer Yaron Carmel and a performance from the Israeli Dance Institute.

PURE MAGIC Once again, Chai was the fortunate recipient of Louise Leach and Caroline Pakter’s event, Dancing with Louise. Annie & The Magic Lamp showcased the best female talent in the community, wowing the audience, as did the tasty food, supplied by the Outlook Committee. The evening raised £3030.

MEAT ‘N’ EAT ‘N’ DONATE Motivated by Chai’s support for his mother, founder of the food festival Gefiltefest, Michael Leventhal and his wife, Rachel, welcomed 25 people to their home for Meatfest 2017, an ‘epic’ buffet dinner where just under £4000 was raised.

PLAYING TO WIN Competition was intense when 120 bridge players attended the Carol Ellman Bridge Lunch at the Hendon flagship. Hosts Carol Ellman and Angela White drew enormous support, raising £5325.

AUGUST TINY TOTS’ BIG CONTRIBUTION Each week after Shabbat, Jack and Summer Tunkel pop £1 in their Chai charity box, so far collecting £122.30!

Jack, 4 said, ‘We give our tzedaka to help people at Chai to make them feel better.’

• Purple balloons filled the sky at the start of A Walk in the Park at St Mary’s Park, Prestwich attended by 250 people. The 2km walk was organised by Forever Chai Committee, Jilly Berens, Tash Winburn, Gemma Berger, Jakki Friedman, Rachel Harris, Sophie Warner.

• Young supporters Yoel Levine, Shaya Levine, Zak Maslin, Jacob Maslin and Rebecca Maslin from Broughton Jewish Cassel Fox School ran an ice cream stall in Salford raising over £430. The young superstars even made the cones themselves!

• An afternoon tea hosted by Evelyn Yaffe and Betty Goldwater raised £200.

• A BBQ and Fizz Night organised

by Lisa Cohen-Binder and Amanda Adshead raised £750.

• A coffee morning hosted by Clare Spieler, Jane Mechlowitz, Michal Mocton and Michelle Deacon raised more than £2000.

• Desserts and drinks for 20 guests was the theme for Rachel Harris’ Chai Night which raised more than £200.

REALLY PAYING IT FORWARD The family of Louise Sinclair z’l, hosted a cinema night for her relatives and friends, raising £2600. Appropriately, the film chosen was Pay it Forward with Kevin Spacey and Helen Hunt.

Covering 338 miles walking to and from work at Westfield Head Office, Hannah Houston-Banks made every step count, raising £810.

The 14th Annual Outlook Committee Walk, across 10km of beautiful Sarratt countryside raised over £11,000 for Chai’s Lymphoedema Clinic.

The 75 enthusiastic participants were rewarded with ample supplies of bagels and chocolate.

Medal-winning table tennis player Jacob Sobel, (pictured, right), (he won the 2017 Maccabi GB National Table Tennis Championships), put his sporting passion to great A dedicated pair use for a marathon 10 hours last February, as he raised £882.

Turquoise ‘Team Chai’ Richard Stephens, Gideon Kay, Alon Stock, Jonny Goldberg and Chai Physiotherapist, Graham Silas cycled all 100 miles of the Prudential Ride London Challenge completing the route in six hours and raising £6835 towards gym equipment at Chai in Hendon.

Motivated by losing two close family members to cancer, Paul Deacon and son Louis, 15, a pupil at Yavneh College, took part in the Elstree Biathlon, a half marathon, followed by a 22.5-mile bike ride. At the end, father and son were ‘exhausted but elated’, having raised £7000.

More than 120 participants aged two to 70, raised over £7000 at the Maccabi GB Fun Run at Allianz Park.

The event saw over 5000 people lace their trainers for their chosen charities and complete 10km, 5km, 1km and Trirun challenges...

…and in Rouken Glen Park in Glasgow, Claudia Edelman, 23, took part in the Maccabi GB Scotland Community Fun Run, completing the 5km race in memory of her mother, Susan.

She raised £1143 and said afterwards, ‘Chai were amazing to Mum and the family. Doing this with people who knew and loved her lets us remember the best times.’

Reuben Abram toughed it out to raise over £6480 taking part in Tough Mudder after his family was affected by cancer.

BAR AND BAT MITZVAH CELEBRATIONS

It’s wonderful to know we have young supporters thinking of others on their special day – kol hakavod to all of you!

Twins Brianna and Ellie Baum, who with mother Renée and father Daniel received Chai’s support, marked their B’not Mitzvah by organising not one but five bake sales, raising £400.

Daniel Friend took 30 of his friends to Megajump Trampoline Park in Borehamwood for his Bar Mitzvah, and turned it into a mega-fundraising opportunity, raising £180.

Rachel Bezalel raised £4444 for Chai. ‘I chose to support Chai having heard about the charity and the support it provides to a close relative. It means a lot to me to be able to do something to help.’

Nina Joffee organized for her Israeli Dance Group to raise funds by putting on a dance performance, raising £250.

Climbing Machu Picchu isn’t an everyday activity but when your dad is director of the Charity Challenge company, you’re in safe hands. Benji Albert raised £3000 on his adventure with his dad Simon, trekking for six days, and camping out in minus zero temperatures.

‘Seven years ago my Saba (Grandpa) passed away from cancer. I wanted to push myself to the limit for a great cause,’ said Benji.

It was a feet (!) of endurance when Bar Mitzvah boys, Samuel Young, Cory Feldman and Max Dvorkin did a sponsored synagogue walk, from Bushey to Elstree to Radlett synagogues. The 2-hour 40-minute walk raised £2800.

That eureka moment!

This September, a new range of heat and serve kosher meals launches in 60 Tescos as well as in kosher independent stores.

Eureka Cove is the brainchild of Jackie and Richie Loebenberg (left) who have nominated Chai as their chosen charity, recognising the support the family has received following Jackie’s breast cancer diagnosis and double mastectomy in 2016. The range of healthy, delicious dishes was created by Michelin-starred chef Paul Van Staveren under the supervision of KCS in Amsterdam.

In June Daniel Kay and daughter Lara, 16, climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. Sharing laughter and a 2x2 metre tent for seven days, they

endured five days of uphill hikes before even reaching Base Camp. ‘Climbing higher made breathing harder,’ recalls Daniel. ‘Lara fought chest pain, nausea and tiredness but there was no complaint or self-doubt.

Climbing in memory of my sisterin-law, Lara’s aunt, Hana Ben Adar, failure was not an option.’

On reaching the Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, Daniel says ‘It was beautiful on top of the world. We were elated!’

‘I ran in memory of my grandpa, and on my daddy’s birthday, so it was a very special day,’ said Ariella.

Lottie Blankstone raised £800 taking part in the 5km Race For Life, running in memory of Devra Grugel and Michy Brown. She also had her own challenge to overcome – recovering from back surgery just nine weeks previously.

In July, Chayelle Weltscher and Sarah Saperia from Manchester went sky-high for Chai as they jumped from a plane 10,000 feet up. Reaching speeds of up to 120mph on their descent to an airfield, Chayelle said, ‘It was the most thrilling thing to do and amazing to raise £656 for Chai at the same time.’

Esther Cohen made her 25th birthday count with a donation of her hair to Zichron Menachem, which makes wigs for children with cancer. Raising £1500 for Chai, she said, ‘It has supported some of my closest friends.

I’m happy to be helping others.’

Einav Diamond Limor also had her hair snipped for Chai, raising £912.46.

Yavneh and Immanuel College students, Josh Beach, 14, and James Cohen, 15, had their heads shaved by Overgrown of Radlett, as an act of friendship and solidarity for a close friend diagnosed with cancer. The pair raised £16,186 for Chai Cancer Care and the Teenage Cancer Trust. The boys said, ‘We decided if one of us is going to lose their hair, we all will.

Both charities are fantastic and we’re pleased to raise a huge amount for both.’
