A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT AND CEO It was another stressful year due to COVID-19, but it was also a year of learning and resilience as we navigated our way through the challenges. On multiple levels, and in so many ways, it was the strength of our community connections that not only guided us but also sustained us in the most difficult times. When COVID-19 vaccinations were first available, we initially faced challenges with scheduling appointments for CHAI residents and staff to get their shots. We reached out to community contacts and CHAI Board members that connected us directly with officials including Judge Clay Jenkins who was not only instrumental in getting our residents and staff the necessary vaccination appointments-- he actually met our CHAI vans at the entrance to Fair Park and escorted residents and staff into the facility to receive their first shots!

Our partnership with the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas continued to provide financial and operational resources. The Health Crisis Management Team, coordinated by the Federation, was a sounding board providing practical advice and tools for Lisa Brodsky managing the ever-changing COVID-19 protocols. The Federation’s Impact Grant supporting our Nursing Services department funded our contract with our 24/7 Telehealth service. This team of nurses has been instrumental in our ability to care for our residents during the pandemic and helped our resident’s avoid serious illness, even when we had COVID cases in the group homes. As we entered the spring and summer months, we briefly had a chance to return to some activities outside of the group homes including visits with family members. In May, the CHAI family gathered on the parking lot of Temple Shalom for our annual fundraiser- CHAI LIFE Drive-In. It was a wonderful evening with pizza and ice cream food trucks and the opportunity to see the CHAI community for the first time in over a year. When the sun went down, attendees watched the film “Where Hope Grows” on a large 40 foot screen. The film’s writer/director as well as its star, a young man with Down Syndrome, joined us for the event. This event, along with our 2021 Annual Campaign, resulted in the highest fundraising total CHAI has had in our 38 year history. Another financial boost came when the government’s Payroll Protection Program loan that we received in 2020 to maintain our staffing throughout the pandemic was forgiven and the funds became a grant to support our operations in 2021 and the surplus will help build our operating reserve for future needs.
We used some of the funds for aesthetic updating at Todd House and also strengthened our office infrastructure with a new phone/internet system as well as an upgrade of our fundraising and financial software. The best news of 2021, and for many years to come, was when Community Homes for Adults Endowment Foundation- CHAEF- received a bequest from Bernard J. “Bunny” Joseph. This bequest totaling over $3 million will provide long-term financial support to CHAI through annual distributions from CHAEF. In honor of this extraordinary contribution, the largest ever received by CHAEF or CHAI, our Central office has been named: The Sonny Joseph Central Office of CHAI. The naming was requested by Bunny Joseph in memory of his brother, Sonny, who suffered a head injury in the late 1940’s when he was a young man. Sonny would have benefited from living in a CHAI group home had the agency existed at the time. A staffing shortage started in the summer of 2021 and has escalated to a crisis we are faced with now at the start of 2022. Our Program staff team have gone above and beyond their normal duties, often working shifts as direct caregivers themselves, to assure that our group homes remained staffed 24/7. We praise and honor their dedication and leadership. Looking to the future, CHAI is privileged to have been selected as one of the local non-profit Jewish agencies invited to participate in the Legacy Heritage OnBoard program. Through a series of surveys and discussions, which began in 2021, our board members will have the opportunity to explore and identify areas of the agency that are in need of improvement. Two board members, Ethan Prescott and Linda Swartz, were selected as Fellows to attend special training sessions and guide the CHAI Board through this two-year program. We are forever grateful for all the connections we have in our community that helped us through 2021. MISSION STATEMENT Community Homes for Adults, Inc. (CHAI) is a non-sectarian, non-profit corporation under Jewish auspices that provides programs and services to enable adults with intellectual disabilities to live full, rich lives in a safe environment and to meaningfully participate in the community. For nearly four decades, CHAI has fulfilled this mission serving families in the community.
Often those who are caring for a loved one with an intellectual disability will ask: “Who will take care of my adult child (or sibling) when I no longer can?” CHAI has been there to answer: “We will” for many families over the past few decades. With the support of our generous donors, we will be able to continue to do so for years to come. On behalf of those families we say: “Thank You!”
