ANNUAL REPORT November 1, 2019 – October 31, 2020

A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT AND CEO CHAI’s 2019-2020 year started out at the beginning of our fiscal year in November as usual. Our residents went home for the holidays to be with their families, we had our staff holiday party, and had our annual Super Bowl Party at Todd House. Our auditors, Carr, Riggs and Ingram completed our audit the end of February and we had no issues and had a very good report.

We hired a consultant to review our satisfaction survey and analyze the results and write a report. Overall, the report was very good as well as provided areas for us to improve.

The Special Needs Partnership of Jewish Family Service chose CHAI to be honored at their annual event. Along with Temple Emanu-El, we were recognized for our long-standing role in serving those with special needs in our community.

We were planning our Annual Meeting in March and our CHAI Life Event in June at the Statler Hotel. Then, COVID-19 hit and we shut down everything in the middle of March. Our residents no longer went to their jobs, Day Hab programs, or volunteered. We had no choice but to temporarily close our Lisa Brodsky Wolens Program Department. We stopped seeing our clients (who either lived alone or with their families), we did not plan outings for our CLUB CHAI (social program), we did not have our CHAI Connects (family support program) events and our supportive employment program.

In late February our staff began to put together a COVID plan and the Jewish Federation gathered the professional leaders in the community to establish a Health Crisis Team.

The Health Crisis Team met weekly to navigate the virus and to help agencies and members of our community.

CHAI staff communicated our COVID plan with our families and Board. We were learning along the way. Staff ordered Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), reached out to the Dallas Health Department for Guidance, signed a contract with Magnolia Labs (to process tests), and educated our staff about sanitizing the homes, washing hands and using PPE. We expanded our Day Hab program to all our homes and staff planned robust activities during the day including daily walks and van rides throughout the week. Each Monday started out with a Zoom meeting with all residents to touch base and say hello.

Our board meetings, committee meetings, staff meetings and family meetings were all held via Zoom. Volunteers and our board dropped off games, food, played Zoom bingo and had sing a longs.

The committee for our CHAI Life Event shifted their plans and held a virtual Happy Hour to honor our CHAI Caregivers ---the Heroes behind the masks. Event Sponsors received special masks once they made their contribution and in September they had Happy Hour kits delivered to their doorstep to enjoy during the virtual event on September 15, 2020 as we celebrated Making Every Hour a Happy Hour for CHAI. Thanks to our generous donors for helping us reach our fundraising goals!

As COVID slowly made its way into our homes, our nursing staff tested our staff and residents often, they monitored those that tested positive, stayed in touch with resident’s doctors and families. We were grateful we did not have anyone become really sick. Our staff was on the front lines and quickly became the heroes. They worked diligently making sure the residents were well taken care of, had activities to keep them busy and made sure they exercised and kept mentally fit.

We applied for a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan and received much needed funds to assist with paying our staff hazard pay, paying for three (3) full time staff that we had to add to work our homes during the day, pay for PPE, and helped us keep all our staff employed.

2020 has been a very difficult year for everyone. CHAI will continue to be vigilant in fighting this pandemic and keeping our residents safe and as happy and fulfilled as possible. With the vaccine we are hoping for a bright future and EVERYTHING WILL BE OKAY!

MISSION STATEMENT Community Homes for Adults, Inc. (CHAI) is a non-sectarian, non-profit corporation under Jewish auspices that provides programs and services to enable adults with intellectual disabilities to live full, rich lives in a safe environment and to meaningfully participate in the community.

For 37 years, CHAI has fulfilled this mission serving families in the community.

Often those who are caring for a loved one with an intellectual disability will ask: “Who will take care of my adult child (or sibling) when I no longer can?”

CHAI has been there to answer: “We will” for many families over the past few decades. With the support of our generous donors, we will be able to continue to do so for years to come.

SPECIAL EFFORTS North Texas Giving Day is a community wide effort sponsored by Communities Foundation of Texas. In 2020 they held an event in the Spring for emergency needs related to COVID-19 as well as the annual event in September.

Approximately 60 donors designated contributions to CHAI totaling $8100

NEW DONORS Even in the difficult days of 2020, we received contributions from 80 NEW donors who had not contributed to CHAI in the past. 28 of those donations were between $360 and $5000

Temple Shalom’s amazing drive-by parade was one of the many creative ways that volunteers and community partners stayed connected with CHAI residents during the unprecedented pandemic lockdown.

A generous grant from the Woolf Charitable Foundation allowed CHAI to upgrade computers at the central office and all group homes providing ability for streamlined recordkeeping and communication. This upgrade became even more valuable when computer technology became a vital part of daily programming utilizing Zoom!

An ongoing 3-year Community Impact Grant from the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas supports CHAI’s commitment to the health and well-being of our residents. Having full-time Registered Nurse Kimmy White on the CHAI staff has been invaluable to managing the challenges of the COVID-19 virus.

Minnie Blackwell served on the CHAI Board of Directors from 2003 until 2020 chairing numerous committees, task forces and programs. We were unable to hold our Annual Meeting in March of 2020, but we presented Minnie with The CHAI Cherished Angel Award in a virtual gathering on Zoom a few months later. This special award has only been given to six individuals in CHAI’s 37 year history.
