Dear Friend, It happened on a winter evening in the early 90’s in what was still a heavily trafficked Oakdale Mall in Johnson City, NY. It was Chanukah and we were celebrating in the center court with a big Menorah lighting, entertainment, and holiday treats for the large crowd in attendance. After the program was done and the crowd had scattered, an elderly gentleman accompanied by a young boy approached me. “I live in a small town close to Binghamton. I came here this evening with my grandson to shop. Never did I imagine that I would see a Menorah lit so publicly and with so much joy. In fact, it has been so very long since I have done anything Jewish that it did not quite register with me that it was Chanukah. When I saw you light the Menorah tonight, something deep inside me stirred mightily,” he said. “Can I come talk to you some time?” he asked, with tears now flowing freely from his eyes. Indeed, he did come a few days later and continued to come for a long time thereafter, both for private conversation and to celebrate Jewish holidays and events.

I was reminded of this event recently at the annual convention for the Rebbe’s Shluchim (see pages 10-11). There were thousands in attendance for what is always an electrifying experience. I saw my brothers and lots of friends from around the world. I got regards from alumni and others, some of whom I haven’t heard from in years. The world is never smaller than it is at this gathering of over five thousand Rabbis from every corner of the globe.

There were plenaries and workshops, farbrengens, soulful singing and spirited dancing. But perhaps, what moved me more than anything else at this year’s convention, was a clip shown at the banquet which showcased long lost Jews returned to their faith through the agency of a Chabad Shliach (google Finding Hidden Jews to view this hauntingly beautiful presentation).

Johnson City, NY is not quite as remote as Turkey or Slovakia. Our local Jewish community is more robust than is the community in Tulsa, OK. But there are Jews everywhere who have “fallen off the grid” and the Rebbe’s far reach and untrammeled love for each and everyone in the form of his shluchim will invariably embrace them.

il is in. Oil shuns superficiality— you won’t find it riding a fad or angling for a photo opportunity.

When oil comes in contact with something, it saturates it to the core, permeating it in its entirety.

When set aglow, oil is the master of understatement. Soundlessly it burns— not for the oil lamp the vulgar cackling of firewood or even the faint sizzle of candlewax. Its light does not burst through the door and bulldoze the darkness away; instead, it gently coaxes the gloom to shimmer with a spiritual luminescence.

W

ine is a tabloid reporter.

Wine barges past the security guard of mind to loosen the lips, spill the guts and turn the heart inside out. Wine smears the most intimate secrets across the front pages of life.

Chanukah is oil, Purim is wine.

Chanukah is the triumph of the Jewish soul. The Greeks had no designs on the Jew’s body; it was the soul of Israel they coveted, seeking to indoctrinate her mind with their philosophy and tint her spirit with their culture. The Jew fought not for the freedom of his

material self but to liberate his spiritual identity from Hellenist domination.

Haman and company did not bother with such subtleties. They had one simple goal: the physical destruction of every Jew on the face of the earth. Purim remembers the salvation of the Jew’s bodily existence.

On Purim we pour out the wine. Purim is a noisy party, a showy parade, a costumed extravaganza. Purim celebrates the fact that the Jew is more than a soul— he is a body as well. Purim celebrates the fact that our Jewishness is not only an internal spirituality but also a palpable reality; that it not only permeates our beings from within, but also spills out into the externalities of our material lives.

Chanukah is commemorated with oil. Chanukah celebrates the innerness of the Jewish soul, the essence which permeates and sanctifies every nook and cranny of the Jew’s life. Chanukah celebrates the secret glow of the spirit, which, rather than confronting the darkness, infiltrates it and transforms it from within.

The Beginning of Western Civilization

By Barry Strauss Chanukah is an eight-day annual Jewish holiday. But it also lays claim as the start of western civilization.

Not Jewish civilization, which was already old at the time of the first Chanukah in the second century before the common era, and not Hellenic (ancient Greek) civilization, which was also ancient. But the encounter of the West with Judaism, of reason with revelation, of Athens with Jerusalem: that began on Chanukah.

"Man," said an ancient Greek philosopher, "is the measure of all things." The Bible disagrees: "the fear of the Lord," it says, "is the beginning of wisdom."

Who is right? A great debate about G‑d and man lies at the heart of the West. From Sinai to Babylon, from the lions to the Crusaders, from the Wars of Religion to the Age of Reason – and of Revolution, from Stalin to John Paul II, from eugenics to a belief that life is sacred, and from globalism to a respect for individual states – even Israel! — it remains the central question.

Athens and Jerusalem still are what they always were, the struggling twins of the West.

Chanukah commemorates a miraculous victory in a war in 167 B.C.E. A Greco-Macedonian kingdom, centered in what is today Syria, had tried to outlaw the Jewish religion in its homeland in Judea and to replace it with Hellenic culture. Many Jews, in fact, supported that goal. But that is no surprise, because Hellenism had enormous appeal.

Hellenism seemed to have everything going for it.

It was up-to-date, sophisticated, and intellectually satisfying. It offered wealth, health, art, and glamour.

It represented the entrance ticket to an imperial

civilization. Hellenism offered the opportunity to think big.

Judaism sat at the opposite end of the scale. It was old, small, and poor. It had no empire. It had nothing to offer except faith, trust, love, and strength. But those things, it turns out, are items that the human heart cannot do without.

So the miraculous happened. A small band, burning with faith, went on to defeat an empire.

There is, of course, a rational explanation; there always is. "The Syrian-Greek state had passed its prime." "The Jews had short lines of communication."

"They mastered guerrilla tactics." "The Greeks overplayed their hand." "Judea wasn't worth the bones of a Macedonian grenadier anyhow." If rational explanations are enough for you, then take your pick.

Judaism had nothing to offer except faith, trust, love, and strength. But those things, it turns out, are items that the human heart cannot do without But if you think that "the heart has its reasons that reason knows not of," if you think that there is more to life than shifting particles, if you respect science without worshipping it – in short, if you doubt that man is G‑d, then wonder at the light of a miracle burning in the dark days of winter.

Graduate Helps Give the Gift of Life

The birth of a healthy child is one of the greatest miracles of life. As a fertility nurse for Reproductive Medical Associates of New York, Ariel Schnur gets to help a vast array of women bring that miracle into the world.

Schnur, who graduated from Binghamton University with a degree in nursing said her job offers a glimpse at wonderment.

“It’s extremely rewarding to help build new families for people who have had difficulty getting pregnant,” she said.

Some women come from impoverished or abusive situations. Some may have had cancer treatment or other treatments that affect fertility. There are some from the LGBTQ community. Some roads to become pregnant are longer and more difficult than others and there are a lot of nerves.

“It’s very exciting but also nerve-racking for the person,” she said. “They think that every step might change the outcome or if they eat the wrong thing it’s terrible, or if a taxi hits a bump, it’s terrible. Google is the worst!”

Schnur, 28 did clinical rotations at area hospitals in Binghamton and volunteered as a doula at UHS Hospital.

She dealt with teens giving birth.

“I think it’s important to always be compassionate and

help others and I realized I wanted to have a career where I would do both,” she said.

One area of research she did was with women who smoked during pregnancy due to addiction and she worked on programs for cessation of smoking. One highlight was to see the birth of quadruplets.

A few of the women she worked with even became friends. She admits it can be an emotional roller-coaster in the joy of families who are able to have children and the difficulty when fertilization doesn’t occur or something else goes wrong at a later stage.

“When it’s a success there is such an overwhelming joy,” she said. “We see many women coming back a second time. When it is not a success, the best comfort we can give them is just to listen and be there for them.

There is a great sense of loss. It’s important for the patient to know it’s not something they did wrong and that she shouldn’t blame herself.”

Schnur grew up in Bellmore, Long Island. She met her Sephardic husband at a 4th of July celebration in Great Neck. He proposed to her on a vacation to Disneyland.

Schnur said the family that is built at Chabad is one that makes the college unique.

“Rivky was an extremely critical person in my college career,” Schnur said. “There were no holds barred. You could come at her with any question and she was always warm and had answers and if she didn’t have the answers, she would find them. She was a great mother figure.”

Schnur’s mother, Gail, died in August after a brain aneurism. Schnur said Rivky was instrumental in helping her and was always there for her to talk on the phone. “It is touching to see how Chabad cares about all of the students, even years after they graduate.”

Schnur said her desire to help people partly comes from her mother, who was a nutrition coach.

Her advice to other students?

“Get involved,” she said. “Binghamton is a great place. Chabad is unforgettable, and your time will go by fast. I have so many great memories of being there with great friends. Don’t be afraid to take on an active role.”

An Unorthodox Boy Scout

Joshua Dorfman heard the harrowing noises of vomiting and a person struggling for his life. The 20-year-old Binghamton University sophomore learned that his suite-mate was going into anaphylactic shock after eating something that had cashews in it. No EpiPen was in sight. Dorfman, knocked on doors in his dorm corridor, got one quickly and helped save the young man’s life.

“I found some random girl who had one and it was crazy but I was calm at the time,” Dorfman said.

He chalks up his quick reflexes to being in the Boy Scouts.

Being an Orthodox Jew and being a Boy Scout is a pretty rare mix. But Dorfman doesn’t believe people should fall into boxes. He is an Eagle Scout, the highest rank under the Boy Scouts and he’s spent more than 150 nights in a tent. The experience, he said has been great, setting up eruvs in the woods for Shabbat and answering occasional questions about Judaism.

“It was great to feel like an ambassador and I spoke to people of different religions and cultures,” he said.

“There was one person who wanted to be friends with Jews because they heard Jews were saviors and another one who asked if I had horns,” Dorfman said.

Dorfman, 20 was recently among 40,000 fellow scouts at a jamboree in West Virginia, where he ran zip-line operations.

“It can go up to 100 feet,” he said. “It’s amazing. It’s an amazing feeling-like you’re flying. Nobody fell off.”

The event, in which a majority of people were from other countries felt like he was in another city, he said.

Dorfman said not hiking on Shabbos was hard, but he got used to it. He followed in the footsteps of his

father, who was also a Boy Scout. One of his greatest achievements? He hiked 65 miles in the New Mexican wilderness carrying 50 pounds of gear on his back.

Dorfman is also a spinning instructor and was a social coordinator for the Student Association as well as office coordinator.

Dorfman lost more than 100 pounds after improving his diet.

“I was a size 52 suit now, I’m a 38,” he said. “I haven’t had a slice of pizza or a bagel in two years.”

He said Chabad’s recipe for success was authenticity.

“I think Chabad is empowering and supportive,” he said. “They’re not judgmental. They educate and it’s up to you. There’s a real feeling of mishpacha. The warmth they bring is amazing.”

Dorfman, who is on Chabad’s Shabbos committee, said he always has something to look forward to.

“I really crave the glow of Friday night Shabbat meals,” he said. “It’s like nothing else.”

He also said he was extremely impressed by Shabbat 1800 where so many students gathered together.

Dorfman, who is majoring in biology and psychology, hopes to become a cardiothoracic surgeon. The graduate of SAR Academy in Riverdale, knows how to make a fire by himself, has excellent navigational and survival skills, and has learned to be calm in high pressure situations.

He’s seen bears before and it turned out okay.

“Brown bears are larger and more aggressive,” he said. “You can’t surprise them.”

The World’s Most Misunderst

By Rabbi Eli Friedman If there is ever a contest for “World’s Most Misunderstood Photo,” the annual group photo of the International Kinus Hashluchim in front of 770 Eastern Parkway will surely be a finalist.

When you look at the photo, you could be forgiven for thinking that someone had taken a picture of a Shliach (Chabad rabbi) wearing a black fedora and black suit and then hit copy and paste 6,000 times.

Aside from the beard colors (black, white, gray and red) very little differentiates one rabbi from the next and on the surface it seems like a conformist convention.

And that is exactly what it isn’t. It would be an injustice to the Shluchim to believe that they are all the same with identical 10 | hakesher magazine

stories, attitudes or personalities.

The beauty in the deluge of black and white is the colorful diversity hidden everywhere in the picture.

You look at one face, you’re looking at a prominent community leader, rabbi and spiritual leader to 2,000 people in a large American suburb. Grinning right next to him is the Shliach in a South American village, a man whose only struggle greater than making a living is the struggle to assemble a Minyan so a local can say Kaddish.

Pan over to the next Shliach and find the chief rabbi of a massive European country. He rubs shoulders with billionaires.

And next to him – the Shliach to Nowhere, USA. He can’t rub together two pennies.

In this one picture you have newlyweds, middle-aged parents, fresh grandparents, and patriarchs of massive families with legions of grandchildren and

great-grandchildren, often in the hundreds, kinehora.

The guy with the red beard over there spends most of his time behind bars tending to the desperate needs of local Jewish prisoners. The short, salt-and-pepper beard behind him started off as a local youth director at the age of 23 and is still at it, devoted to his third generation of kids 30 years later. (And that short beard is rolled up; it’s two feet long.

I’ve seen it!)

Scroll down to that guy there with the black beard. Ten years ago, this guy didn’t know what a Mezuzah was. He was the starting quarterback on his high school varsity team and his chances of ending up a Shliach were as good as his chances of ending up starting for the Cowboys. But here he is, flush with excitement, living the dream (the Shliach one, not the Cowboys one). The very tall one next to him was a successful business attorney who yearned to do more, so he

The Rebbe’s Army

The beauty in the deluge of black and white is the colorful diversity hidden everywhere in the picture traded in his law practice for a campus Chabad post. He admits that his 401(k) is poorer but that his life is much richer.

And just above him, with the silky white beard, is the rabbi’s rabbi, an expert in Jewish law, a genius of enormous proportions, a man with miles of Torah on the tip of his tongue and a heart of gold in his chest. Just one of the guys.

That one over there brought Tefillin to Sandy Koufax. That

one put Tefillin on Sid Caesar. That one put Tefillin on the president of Ukraine. That one put on Tefillin with Bob Dylan. That one put on Tefillin in Auschwitz. That one sent Tefillin into space with Ilan Ramon.

The serious-looking one there put on Tefillin with virtually every Jewish man in his city. (And don’t let the look fool you – he’s one of the funniest men in the group.)

This guy here grew up in a mansion in Missouri and he’s a beloved spiritual mentor to Yeshiva students. The guy talking to him grew up in a matchbox in Michigan and he’s growing a community in Colorado.

This Italian here runs Chabad in Utah; this other Italian runs Sweden. That Russian runs Texas.

This Israeli runs Alabama. That Brazilian runs New Jersey. This Australian runs Georgia. And of course, these boys from Brooklyn are running Nevada, Montana, Louisiana, and Nebraska. And

Germany. And Ghana.

This tall one saves lost backpackers in Thailand. That short one saves lost souls in Nepal. The gray-bearded one lives 5,500 miles away in Siberia and he’s laughing with his old friend who lives three miles away in Flatbush.

Some of them have encountered astonishing success, like in Paris, where half the Shluchim were inspired to Jewish observance by the other half. And some of these men have encountered astonishing resistance, like the man who has loyally served an American Jewish community for twenty years and still needs to argue with the locals about the importance of Yom Kippur.

This shy scholar here? He is in the midst of a $20 million building campaign. The charismatic gentlemen listening to him is in the midst of a $300,000 foreclosure. The thin man next to him just opened a Glatt Kosher restaurant in Mexico, just like the guy behind him who DECember 2019 | 11

just opened a Kosher eatery in China. But the rabbi behind them, serving the Russian hinterlands, hasn’t seen a Kosher restaurant since last year’s conference and has been slaughtering and koshering his own meat for fifteen years.

The rabbi in the corner is part of a family that has been Chabad since Chabad began 230 years ago.

His classmate and colleague embracing him is the child of two ex-hippies who searched their way to Chabad in the 60’s and reversed four generations of assimilation.

Most of these men speak Yiddish, Hebrew and some English. But if you listen closely you can hear the conversations accented by countless languages and dialects. Most of these men are of Ashkenazic background, but many are Sefardic, some are Yemenite, some are Persian. Many are fourth or fifth generation Americans.

Some are natural extroverts, some are painful introverts. Some are born optimists. Others struggle to maintain their optimism. Some are naturally exuberant; others, melancholy.

The differences never end. Each and every person in this photo is genuinely unique and each of them has a one-of-a-kind story that will yet be told.

But what they have in common is so powerful that it unites them together like a family. Their love for the Rebbe spills over into a love for each other. Their love for the Rebbe’s mission and vision of a world conquered by goodness, kindness and Yiddishkeit unites them like brothers around a singular, unstoppable sense of purpose.

Drenched in that family vibe, all the colorful languages, backgrounds, upbringings, personalities and living conditions blend together brilliantly. They produce a spiritual harmony the likes of which has never been seen before.
