WARREN — Two suspects were arraigned in the 37th District Court on Aug. 25 for their alleged roles in the death of James Wilkins and the disposal of his body.

Wilkins, 27, of Warren, described as a “loving” father and football coach, was reported missing in June.

Van Dyke schools welcome K-9 teams WARREN — With their tails wagging behind them, Binx and Intel are ready for the new school year in Van Dyke Public Schools, which began Aug. 28.

Binx and Intel are the district’s two new therapy/detection dogs from Zebra K9. Binx, age 2 1/2, and Intel, age 2, will work in the district with their handlers, John Guerrero and Tony Stokes, respectively.

Both officers were hired by Zebra K9 and not the city of Warren. Gregory Guidice is the president and CEO of Zebra K9.

Adding the K-9 dogs is another layer of the district’s security measures designed to protect the students and staff.

Zebra K9 provides advanced canine team security services for schools, health care facilities, businesses and events. Teams are trained and certified in firearms and explosives detection.

Through their sense of smell, the police dogs can search backpacks, lockers, restrooms, bleachers, gymnasiums and stadiums.

When something suspicious is detected, the K-9 will signal the officer, who will take the next steps depending on the situation. The Labrador retriever dogs also will be on site as therapy dogs to provide emotional support to students when needed.

School officials brought in the four-legged workers with grant money from the Michigan Department of Education designated for school safety. The grant will cover the costs of the dogs for the 2023-2024 school year.

The trained animals will rotate around the district at different schools, including Lincoln High School, Lincoln Middle School, Lincoln Elementary, McKinley Elementary, Carlson Elementary and the Early Childhood Center.

WARREN — Incumbent City Councilman Eddie Kabacinski filed a lawsuit in Macomb County Circuit Court on Aug. 18 against three candidates, the Warren Election Commission and the Warren city clerk for allowing those candidates on this year’s primary election ballot.

Kabacinski, who came in fourth place in the primary race, has named the top vote-getter, Henry Newnan, and second-place finisher Brittani Tringali in the lawsuit. Both Newnan and Tringali will be on the ballot for the general election in November. Third-place finisher Jay Michael Jackson was also a named defendant.

According to the civil complaint, the order of finish — with Newnan, Tringali and Jackson coming in first, second and third respectively, and Kabacinski coming in fourth — “Constitutes a criminal fraud that has been perpetuated upon the good and decent people in the 5th Council District for the city of Warren by having ineligible and unqualified candidates voted upon the primary election ballot.”

In the complaint, Kabacinski contends that information in public records searches indicated Newnan no longer resides at the Warren address he listed on the application when he filed for candidacy, but rather resides in Royal Oak. “I have a lawyer investigating it (Kabacinski’s claims). I’ve lived at the same house in Warren for 30 years. And the documentation he sent by certified mail came to that very same address,” Newnan said. “The research that he gathered indicates the Gail (Warren) address is my current address.”

WARREN — September is Library Card Sign-up Month.

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year.

With a library card, patrons can borrow books, e-books, and audiobooks. They can also get help with their homework, learn new skills, or attend a book club or story time. Games, telescopes and mobile hotspots can also be checked out with a library card.

According to librarians, a library card helps everyone do more of what they enjoy.

Free courtesy library cards are issued to patrons who work in Warren with proof of employment. There’s something for everyone at the Warren Public Library and signing up for a library card is the first step on the path to academic achievement for students and lifelong learning. There will be prize drawings all month long. Current patrons can get a free replacement card in September.

‘PAWS to Read’

WARREN — The Warren Civic Center Library will host “PAWS to Read” from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays at the Civic Center Library. Children of all ages can read to therapy dogs named Desmond and Sashi.

The PAWS program welcomes new and struggling readers to read to a certified therapy dog. The goal is to provide a nonjudgmental atmosphere in which kids can read without correction or interruption and learn not just to read, but to love reading as well.

This program will be held in the story time room at the Civic Center Library, on the ground level of Warren City Hall, east of Van Dyke Avenue and north of 12 Mile Road.

Stories of Exile Reading Group

WARREN — The Warren Public Library is one of about 30 libraries that has partnered with the Yiddish Book Center’s “Stories of Exile” Reading Groups for Public Libraries project.

The group holds events and book discussions exploring themes of immigration, dispossession, diaspora, the refugee experience and home through the lens of Yiddish literature.

The “Stories of Exile” program aims to foster conversations about appreciating diverse cultures that may be different from one’s own while recognizing people are part of one human family.

The group will meet at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21, at the Warren Civic Center Library. The program is open to anyone 16 and older.

Visit the circulation desk to check out a copy of “In the Land of the Postscript,” by Chava Rosenfarb. There will be a guest speaker from the Zekelman Holocaust Center who will give further context to the selected stories.

CENTER LINE — There’s a lot of excitement surrounding Center Line football after winning the Macomb Area Conference Bronze league title in 2022, and freshman running back Masai Ali just gave fans a look at how explosive the offense can be this year.

Rushing for 220 yards and three touchdowns on just nine carries in a 34-0 win over Melvindale on Aug. 24 at Center Line High School, Ali has the Center Line offense feeling more confident than ever this year.

Freshman wideout Darius Wallace also tacked on a receiving touchdown in the win while junior quarterback Ethan Goralski scored on a 61-yard run.

Sophomore linebacker Avery Taylor will be a name to watch this year in the MAC Bronze, and he made his impact felt early as he collected seven tackles and two fumble recoveries in the win. Junior defensive tackle Chase Dowdell recorded six tackles in the win as well.

Center Line will have one of their toughest tests of the season in week two when they travel to the MAC Silver’s Madison Heights Lamphere on Aug. 31 in a MAC crossover game.

Howard added, “I was also contacted by our state Sen. Paul Wojno. He was able to share with me that in one of the precincts, that there were some additional ballots counted. So, my position is, this is what the recount does and then we’ll just go from there.”

There are two at-large seats on the Warren City Council, and both are up for reelection this year. The primary’s top four candidates move on to the general election ballot in November.

The top vote-getter was Dave Dwyer, who came in first with 5,502 votes, which was 17.0% of the votes cast in the race. Donna Kaczor Caumartin came in second with 5,214 votes (16.2%). Incumbent Angela Rogensues was third with 4,808 votes (14.9%) and Marie Adkins was fourth with 3,201 votes (9.9%). According to the Macomb County Clerk’s office, there were more than 30,000 votes cast in the race.

Howard came in fifth with 2,939 votes (9.1%), a difference of 262 votes and less than 1 percentage point from the fourth position.

According to the Macomb County Clerk’s Office, to get a recount, you have to file a petition and pay the cost for the recount.

The cost is determined by a formula which results in paying $25, $125 or $250 per precinct. The office said Howard is paying $125 per precinct.

Warren has 53 precincts, according to the city’s website. Howard had 34 precincts recounted. In each precinct there are two counts, the absentee ballot count and the same day election count. According to election officials, Howard had 31 precinct absentee counts and three election day precinct counts, which made up the 34 total precincts.

If the recount included all the precincts, it would be the 53 same day election precincts and 53 absentee ballot precincts, for a total of 106.

“We did precinct 40 because that is

where the additional ballots were counted.

Then we looked at where we were close and selected those precincts,” Howard said of the decision to request recounts in certain precincts.

“I was told today (Aug. 30) by the Board of Canvassers, the tabulator was not reset and it (the absentee ballots) ran twice,” Howard said.

“This was just a sampling of votes. To do (a recount) of the entire city would have been cost prohibitive,” Howard said. “This recount cost $5000. A total recount would cost more than $15,000.”

At the recount there were several tables of counters who worked in teams. There were those who read the ballot, those who counted the votes and those who tallied the votes.

During a recount, if the tallies do not match, they have to start all over.

Michael Howard, who ran for Warren City Council in District 2 and is no relation to Jocelyn Howard, was one of the observers at the recount.

“When it was determined there would be a recount of the at-large vote, each candidate in that race could have as many as 10 observers representing them,” Michael Howard said. “I am representing Angela Rogensues.”

The recount began at 8 a.m. in the Sports and Expo Center and before 9 a.m.

Michael Howard said, “They’ve already messed up. And they have to start the process all over again.”

He was referring to the table of counters whose tallies did not match.

An election official explained that starting all over again is part of the system of checks and balances ensured by the recount process. When there are two candidates to vote for in a race, it takes the readers, checkers and talliers time to get their rhythm. By the afternoon, things were running smoothly, said the election official.

After checking back with some of the observers around noon, Michael Howard said, “The recount has really been handled well.”

WARREN — Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer has acknowledged the heroic efforts of two of his officers after they recently received national recognition.

Officers Charles Cobble and Chad Rossow were awarded the June 2023 Officer of the Month Award from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. Cobble and Rossow were instrumental in stopping a juvenile from committing suicide. According to police, the male teen was holding a gun to his head threatening to end his life.

Dwyer thanked the officers for their bravery, de-escalation, and communication skills which led to the teen dropping the gun and preventing a tragic loss of life. Officers took the teen for psychiatric evaluation and prevention.

“When the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund contacted my office for a submission, I instantly knew Officers Cobble and Rossow were the officers to nominate,” Dwyer said. “This award is very special and is only given to those officers who went above and beyond. I, along with every member of this department, am so

WARREN — When students at two Warren Woods Public Schools buildings return to school this month, they’ll be sure to notice the new murals displayed inside.

A new “Go Wildcats” painting, made

by Warren resident Sami Beauchamp, now decorates a hallway at Westwood Elementary School in honor of its mascot. Over at Warren Woods Tower High School, the artistic talents of Adam Beauchamp stand out in a mural he painted that represents the school’s band and choir students.

Brothers Adam and Sami Beauchamp, members of the Boy Scouts of America Troop 1477, created the artwork to earn their Eagle Scout rank. The Beauchamps each had to organize, plan and execute an Eagle Scout project, which is the final requirement to obtain the highest rank within the Boy Scouts of America organization.

The project is designed to give the Scouts lessons in community service, leadership, teamwork and project management.

There are many steps to earning the rank of Eagle Scout, including presenting before the Eagle Board of Review.

The K-9 team’s presence — along with regular patrol and searches — establishes a proactive approach to help identify risks before they escalate.

Last Wednesday, Binx, a female, was on site at Lincoln High School with Guerrero.

At one point, the pair walked the perimeter of the school. When inside, seniors Ashley Blackwell and Faith Shoults stopped by to pet the dog while on the way to class. They asked first if they could pet her as the dog’s

Guerrero trained for nearly five months at American K-9 Interdiction in Carrsville, Virginia.

“We trained every day Monday through Friday. We started at 7 a.m., and went until 4, 5, 6 p.m.,” said Guerrero, who served in the U.S. Air Force. “When I first got her, she was kind of skittish toward people.”

Binx has since relaxed a bit and settled into her new surroundings. On the first day of school, Guerrero and Binx helped escort anxious students to class.

“I don’t think he has anything on me whatsoever. He also attacked the other two candidates who got more votes than he did, which makes me presume he is basically a sore loser,” Newnan said. “I came in first, and I guess he just can’t handle the truth.”

Kabacinski contends in his complaint Tringali has used various aliases, committed felonies, and currently does not live in Warren but in the state of Georgia, therefore, making her inKabacinski eligible to run for Warren City Council.

“First of all, I am eligible to run. If I wasn’t eligible, then I would have been disqualified many months ago,” said Tringali.

“The other allegations he is claiming are fictitious. I never lived in North Carolina.

I never lived or did any crimes in any of the states (he said). Nor did I use the aliases he is claiming.”

Tringali expressed disappointment with Kabacinski’s behavior as a sitting council member.

“Is this what your time and effort go into, causing drama and chaos?” said Tringali. “I thought you were supposed to uphold this city with dignity, honor and integrity.”

Tringali refutes the characterizations Kabacinski alleges in his complaint.

“I am a part-time student at Wayne State (University) in the social work program. I volunteer at my church and other church organizations. I coach basketball,” said Tringali. “I am a single mom with two boys, who works hard, very hard, to make a better life for my children.”

Tringali plans further action.

“I have contacted CheckPeople.com to dispute the information Eddie Kabacinski was provided and will have an attorney do the same thing,” said Tringali.

Jay Michael Jackson was also named in the lawsuit. According to the complaint, Kabacinski contends Jackson was ineligible because he is currently serving as a Warren Police Department chaplain and as the city of War-

ren Crime Commission’s sergeant-at-arms.

Jackson said, “I was appointed to the Crime Commission, I was not elected. And upon me winning the election, I would have been stepping down from the Crime Commission. According to the (Warren) city charter, I could run but once elected, I would have to step down. I don’t think he understood that much.

“I truly believe Eddie had a problem getting beat in the election, especially by a first-timer like myself,” Jackson said.

Jackson added, “The people in District 5 want somebody that’s going to be transparent, willing to work for them, willing to listen to them, and also willing to make himself available to them. That has not been the case for the last four years.”

Also named in the lawsuit are Warren City Clerk Sonja Buffa and the Warren Election Commission composed of Warren City Attorney Ethan Vinson, Warren City Assessor Jennifer Czeiszperger and Buffa.

“It comes with the territory,” Vinson said when asked about the lawsuit.

In the lawsuit, Kabacinski has no attorney of record and is representing himself. As stated in the complaint, the remedy he seeks is, “City of Warren Clerk and city of Warren Election Commission to remove candidate Henry Newnan, candidate Brittani Tringali, and candidate Jay Michael Jackson all (from the ballot) as ineligible and unqualified from the votes cast from Tuesday, 08 August 2023 on the primary election ballot.”

The complaint further asks the court to “Order Eddie Kabacinski as the only remaining candidate that is eligible and qualified per the city charter of Warren.”

Kabacinski also wants $135,638.64 in damages, which the complaint states is “The equivalent to the amount of the four-year term of service on the city of Warren Council.”

He is also requesting the defendants be fined for each civil infraction. The fines are $10,000, $1,000 and $500 for each violation.

Calls made to Kabacinski were not returned.

Oral arguments were scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Sept. 5 in Macomb County Circuit Court before Judge James Biernat Jr., after the Warren Weekly went to press.

was executed at an apartment Wilkins and Renfroe shared in Warren.

Inside the apartment, police reportedly found a newly patched bullet hole in the wall, along with suspected blood. Police said additional evidence revealed Renfroe rented cleaning equipment and purchased cleaning supplies at a local hardware store on the day of Wilkins’ disappearance. Detectives also located and seized handguns associated with Renfroe.

The investigation revealed Renfroe went to Ohio where he was arrested on unrelated charges and extradited back to Michigan, police reported.

“After a detailed investigation, investigators were able to obtain a homicide charge against the main suspect and other charges against his accomplice,” said Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer.

“The amount of evidence in this case is very significant against both suspects. Even so,

investigators are continuing to follow up on leads pertaining to the location of Mr. Wilkins’ body.”

Warren police said the case marks the city’s first reported homicide of 2023.

Both Renfroe and Glenn pleaded not guilty. Police said the suspects have no prior criminal history. Visiting Judge Dennis LeDuc denied bond for Renfroe and set Glenn’s bond at $1 million cash or surety with a GPS tether required if bond is posted.

According to police, the case is still an active and ongoing investigation and detectives are continuing to work leads.

Renfroe’s attorney, Noel George Erinjeri, declined to comment on the case.

According to 37th District Court records, Glenn has not yet been assigned a public defender.

Both Renfroe and Glenn remained in the Macomb County Jail at press time ahead of a probable cause conference scheduled for 8:45 a.m. Sept. 7 before Judge Steven Bieda in the 37th District Court.

HARRISON TOWNSHIP — Every time Elvis Presley fans find out Johnny Lang knew the superstar personally, they ask him the same question: “What was he like?”

Lang, 87, never hesitates to respond.

“Nothing but heart,” the Harrison Township resident said. “He was wonderful, just wonderful.”

Lang became friends with Presley — dubbed the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll — when they were both drafted into the U.S. Army, serving from 1958-60 in Germany. By the time Presley began his military stint, the singer already had several hits under his blue suede shoes, including “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “Love Me Tender” and “Hound Dog.” Lang’s bond with Presley was so special that he wrote the book “My Army Days with Elvis: Friendship, Football, & Follies,” released in January 2023. After the book came out, Lang did an autograph session at his regular hangout: the Alibi Inn in Clinton Township. On Aug. 8, the author shared his stories during an Elvis Presley themed event held at the Recreational Authority of Roseville and Eastpointe’s Senior Center.

“The first time I saw Elvis was at the firing range. Everybody said, ‘Hey, Johnny, there’s Elvis Presley.’ I said, ‘I ain’t bothering him. No way,’” said Lang, a 1955 graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Royal Oak. “He was about 100 yards away from me and that was it. But the second time I saw him, I’m on the train going from Fort Hood, Texas, to New Jersey because we’re shipping out to Germany.”

It was fellow soldier Charlie Hodge, a musician himself who later became part of Presley’s “Memphis Mafia” entourage, who insisted Lang say hello. He did and spent about 15 minutes talking to the music icon. Lang and Presley met a third time while sailing the Atlantic Ocean aboard the USS Randall. That’s when they became pals.

“We spent 10 days on the boat,” Lang said. “That’s when I really got to know him. I got to know him as a person, not a movie star.”

One favorite memory on the ship was an impromptu performance from Presley after Lang found a piano “in this great big room.” At first, the place was empty. But as soon as Presley began belting out songs and tickling the ivories, the other soldiers packed the room for the mini concert.

“He started out really slow. Then in a flash, man, he got into it. The performer took over and he started banging the hell out of that piano,” Lang wrote in his memoir. “Everybody was clapping and cheering.”

stayed that way until he got discharged,” Lang said. “I was in the scout platoon. I babysat a 30-caliber machine gun. My job was to find the enemy and go back and report it.”

Lang lived in the barracks with his comrades, but Presley rented a house. Lang spent a lot of time there. There were dances and billiards. Presley’s charisma always stood out.

“With blue eyes and pitch-black hair, he had a God-like face,” Lang said. “He was beautiful.”

And there was a silly side to the megastar.

“We did a lot of clowning around and kidding around. A lot of people don’t realize he was funny as hell,” Lang said. “He had a sense of humor that wouldn’t quit. He had the greatest laugh.”

Sports were another pastime. When off duty, the group tossed around the football.

Lang usually took on the position of halfback.

Presley was the quarterback.

“He had a great arm,” Lang remembered.

The football games always drew a crowd.

Followers of Presley would hang out on the sidelines for autographs, and the music idol always obliged.

“Without my fans, I’d have nothing,” Presley told Lang. “Sometimes on Saturday afternoons, he’d have fans come over. He’d sit and sign autographs. He loved his fans, and they loved him.”

The Grammy winner also had a reputation for being generous with his friends. One way he showed his love was buying them presents. Lang still has two gifts he received from Presley: a Ronson lighter and a watch engraved with the words “To Johnny From Elvis.”

At the time the entertainer was overseas, there was talk that his popularity would wane.

But judging by the 10,000 letters he received every week, the legend with the swiveling hips from Tupelo, Mississippi, was still the King.

Lang’s home is decorated with Presley memorabilia, including old photos, plates, statues, ornaments and posters.

“They call this Graceland II,” Lang said, referring to Presley’s Memphis estate.

Lang didn’t see Presley after leaving the service. He got married at age 26, had five children and worked 30 years as a steelworker for J&L Steel in Warren. He was at a union meeting on Aug. 16, 1977, when he heard the news that Presley died.

“My ex-wife called me. She said you might want to sit down,” Lang recalled. “I cried like a baby. It hit me like a ton of bricks.

All the memories came flooding back.”

Lang periodically thought about writing a book about Presley over the years. He got serious about it after the release of the 2022 film “Elvis,” starring Austin Butler as Presley and Tom Hanks as his manager, Col. Tom Parker.

“I saw the movie with my children and grandkids,” he said. “Austin Butler was unbelievable. I had tears in my eyes.”

Lang has four daughters, Lisa, Nicole, Monique, and Vanessa, and one son, Jeffrey.

At the encouragement of Jeffrey, Lang wrote “My Army Days with Elvis: Friendship, Football, & Follies.”

“I’m proud of all my children,” said Lang, who dedicated the book to Nicole, who has special needs.

“This project was wonderfully cathartic for my father. It allowed him to lace together many short, anecdotal stories, blanketed in warmth and humor,” Jeffrey Lang wrote in the book’s foreword. “I’m pleased that folks all over can now get a glimpse into that brief but memorable time in my dad’s life.”

“An Eagle Scout is a Scout always and they’re always trustworthy. They’re always loyal and helpful,” Troop 1477 Scoutmaster Travis Miller said. “Most people don’t know that 72% of males in the United States were at one point a Boy Scout. Now, we have opened our program up to young ladies, which is awesome.”

Adam Beauchamp, who was a senior patrol leader, admitted that when he first joined scouting, “It was a little bit rough.”

“I wasn’t used to camping or being away from home. Scouting has helped me learn to push myself through difficult times and also it helped me build more self-confidence.

Once you build more self-confidence, you’ll feel more comfortable doing what was not comfortable at first,” Adam Beauchamp said.

His favorite merit badges were Public Speaking, Hiking and Sculpture. One treasured memory was his first camping trip, visiting Pictured Rocks and the Mackinac Bridge in the Upper Peninsula. Adam Beauchamp believes the program will help him with his future.

“Once you’re an Eagle that means you fully learned throughout your years of Scouting and now, you’re on the path of living and learning,” he said. “It helps prepare you for moving out and getting a job and always being prepared. Once you’re an Eagle, you will always live by the Scout oath, the (Scout) Law and the motto.”

Sami Beauchamp’s favorite merit badges were Wilderness Survival, Rifle Shooting and Metalwork. Serving as senior patrol leader at Gerber Scout Reservation last summer was a favorite memory, as was the overnight wilderness survival trip. He appreciated all who came out to the honor ceremony.

“When I first started Scouting, I was in first grade, and I brought a flier home to join Cub Scouts. I roped my entire family into Cub Scouts and then later Boy Scouts,” Sami

Beauchamp said. “It’s been quite the journey.

I’ve really pushed myself and challenged myself to do things that I actually thought I would never do. It’s been so much fun. I’m

super glad to finally have my Eagle.”

Sunrise District Commissioner Mark Hodges provided the closing remarks at the end of the ceremony.

“This will be something that will continue for the rest of their lives,” he said.

“To deal with these young men and young women now, it’s just such a pleasure and you get such energy from them. It’s just so wonderful to work with them and see them grow from Cub Scouts up to young men and young women, and to think you had a little part helping them along to do that. That’s the thing in Scouting I think all Scout leaders hope to have.”

The ceremony included a taco bar dinner for guests, and Adam Beauchamp displaying his vocal skills by singing the song “Growing Wings,” by David Shipp. Adam Beauchamp is a Warren Woods Tower graduate. Sami Beauchamp graduated from Bloomfield Hills High School.
