ROYAL OAK — Due to a cancer diagnosis earlier this year, Royal Oak City Commissioner Patricia Paruch announced she will be stepping away from the commission and entering hospice care. Paruch revealed in a statement that she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer in May and that, after speaking with her family and doctors, decided that

fighting the disease wasn’t an option for her and that she would end cancer treatments and enter hospice. “During this time I have come to the realization that death is just a moment in time, and I intend to spend the precious time I have left surrounded by my family and friends in the city I love,” she stated. Paruch stated that serving the residents of Royal Oak has been “both a privilege and distinct honor that I have cherished.” “I want to thank this community, including its residents, my former and current colleagues, and everyone I have worked with, for giving me the chance to help move See PARUCH on page 15A

FERNDALE — Hundreds of cars packed into downtown Ferndale this past weekend for the city’s annual Dream Cruise festivities. The Woodward Dream Cruise was held Aug. 19 across several cities in metro Detroit, including its hometown and birthplace in Ferndale. The city’s Dream Cruise event was highlighted by the massive Ford Mustang Alley on both sides of Nine Mile Road. WWII memorial celebrates phase 1 dedication in Royal Oak ROYAL OAK — The date of Aug. 10 marked the dedication of phase 1 of the Michigan World War II Legacy Memorial in Royal Oak. The ceremony was held at Memorial Park, 31050

Tree planting ROYAL OAK — The city of Royal Oak is offering a tree planting program for residents. According to the city’s website, people can request a free tree to be planted in the easement in front of their home. Those interested are asked to fill out an online form, where they can select the type of tree they want. The options include a red oak, red maple, hybrid elm, honey locust, zelkova, coffee tree and pin oak. The deadline to sign up is Aug. 27. For more information, visit romi.gov.

Event to support Maui after wildfires

OAKLAND COUNTY — The Polynesian Arts Advocacy Council of Michigan will be hosting a fundraiser, Luau for Lahaina, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at the Novi Civic Center, 45175 W. 10 Mile Road. Held in partnership with the city of Novi, the event is a fundraiser for Maui and the town of Lahaina, which has suffered from wildfires. “The Luau for Lahaina will be an afternoon of family friendly fun and celebration of Hawaiian arts and culture,” a press release states. “Guests will enjoy hands on activities and demonstrations of cultural arts such as lei making, food available from Junk Food & Friends Food Truck and D’Litefull Eats Food Truck, and a Kids Zone featuring glitter tattoos, bubbles, and hula lessons with Michigan Moana.” The highlight of the event will be an authentic Polynesian dance performance by the Polynesian Dancers of Michigan, with special guest Tiffanie Zuttermeister, of Las Vegas’ Halau Kaleihoku Kuikanani and students from the Novi-based hula school Halau O’ Ku’ukamali’i Kuikanani. “I am very proud of my Michigan students for working hard to give back to Hawaii and to Maui right now,” Kumu Hula Kaui Dalire, of Kaneohe, Hawaii, who oversees Halau O’ Ku’ukamali’i Kuikanani, said in a prepared statement. “Last year I was Novi’s Artist in Residence and lived there for six weeks. Man found dead after crash into building BY MIKE KOURY

BERKLEY/ROYAL OAK — A man was found dead by police after he was involved in a car crash at 10:17 a.m. Aug. 10 near Coolidge Highway and Webster Road in Berkley, near the border with Royal Oak. According to police, a 79-year-old Southfield man was driving north on Coolidge at a high rate of speed when his car clipped the rear end of another vehicle as it was starting to approach the turn near Webster. “The vehicle then veered off the road and crashed into the apartment complex on the Royal Oak side and (the driver) was pronounced dead at Beaumont Hospital,” Berkley Public Safety Detective Lt. Andrew Hadfield said. “The initial indication is that he may have passed prior to the crash and that the crash itself was not a factor in the death.” Hadfield said that police do not suspect alcohol or drugs were involved at this time. was owned by Mike Compson’s aunt, Lois Compson Eminger, who used to work at Ford and who they said helped patent the color “dusk rose.” The Compsons came into the Mustang when their aunt was moving and gave the vehicle to them, although they are considering putting it in a museum because of wild animals possibly damaging it where they live. “It means so much to us,” Pam Compson said. “It was (Lois’) car and if it gets crashed, there goes her history.” This is only the second year the Compsons have brought the Mustang to Mustang Alley, and Pam Compson said they’ve liked learning new things about the vehicle by bringing it to the alley. “That’s why we’re here,” she said. “We always take something away. … We always find out another something about this little car, whether it’s the hood or the color — well, we know the color — the custom seats, and it’s just fun to listen to people.” Also parked along Nine Mile was Richard Kocan, of Novi, with his 2006 Mustang GT. Kocan has owned the car since it was first released and has owned several Mustangs over the years. Kocan said that once you have a Mustang, it’s hard to get rid of them. “I’ve always been a Ford guy, so I had to stay with-

in the family, but it was an easy choice to make. You just keep the windows down and keep cruising. It’s just enjoyable,” he said. This was the 28th year for the Dream Cruise, and Randy Delamielleure has been able to bring his 1966 Mustang to every single one. He has owned the car for 50 years. A former employee of Ford, Delamielleure, of Williamston, said he actually built his Mustang. “I built this whole car. I’ve had it apart many times. I’ve had probably 10 different engines in this car. I’ve raised children; I had car seats in the car. They’re grown ass men now that have Mustangs,” he said. The 1966 was the first Mustang Delamielleure ever owned, of which he said he’s had around 100 over his lifetime, but this Mustang was one he never wanted to part with. “I was married for 38 years. I just went through a divorce and this car had to be sold, but I wouldn’t sell it, so I had to buy my ex out to keep the car,” he said. “That’s how bad I wanted to keep it. So it was actually in storage for three years until we decided what we’re going to do. But it’s always been here at Mustang Alley or ever since they’ve had Mustang Alley.” Delamielleure said he likes coming back each year to the Dream Cruise, as he likes being able to check out all the other Mustangs and how the car has evolved over the years. “It’s important to see what other people’s ideas are, get ideas, and to see what the younger generations are coming up with, and then the newer cars and designs,” he said. “It’s just kind of overwhelming.” Call Staff Writer Mike Koury at (586) 498-1077.

M1 CONCOURSE BRINGS CAR ENTHUSIASTS TOGETHER IN AN AUTOMOTIVE ENVIRONMENT BY MARIA ALLARD allard@candgnews.com

om McDonald has been around cars his entire life. “Growing up, I could tell every car by the sound of the motor,” he said. As a family man with a wife and four daughters, McDonald worked in automotive communication for more than 50 years. Now retired, McDonald can often be found at his favorite spot in town: the M1 Concourse in Pontiac. The 87-acre M1 Concourse — located at the northwest corner of Woodward Av-

enue and South Boulevard — is known as a premier destination for automotive entertainment and recreation. The concourse is a community of private car condominiums with living rooms and kitchenettes. Each car condo garage features two-story open spaces ranging in size that allow for parking multiple vehicles. The concourse also features a 1.5-mile road course, an events center, and indoor and outdoor spaces that overlook the track. It’s a place where car buffs can gather for private and public events. There’s also a retail store on-site. “This is like a country club for car peo-

ple. It’s fun. It’s a place to play and a place to rest,” said McDonald, who resides in Rochester Hills. “This was an old General Motors plant. It was like a brownfield.” The M1 Concourse is the ideal place for McDonald to store and drive his five cars: a 2017 Mazda MX-5 Cup racing car, a 2016 Mazda Miata street car, a 1957 Porsche Speedster, a 2016 Porsche 911 Carrera, and a hybrid 2019 Porsche Panamera. McDonald said the Miata “is wonderful for the street and the track.” “It provides a thrill and a smile,” he said. “You get out of this car and you can’t help but smile.”

As for the 1957 Porsche Speedster, “This is a very rare car. Very few of them were made,” McDonald said. “It has a rear engine and has been fully restored.” Inside his condominium his love for cars is evident by the number of posters and mementos dedicated to his years of working in the automobile industry. One special piece is the toy replica model of a 1956 Chevy Bel-Air. “I took my wife on our first date in this car. It was a drive-in in Pennsylvania,” McDonald said. “I was in college. Clawson’s bond saw 2,112 voters cast ballots, with 1,214 choosing yes and 898 selecting no. Superintendent Billy Shellenbarger said he was not surprised to see the community vote for the bond. “Just in conversation in the community all summer, whether it was knocking doors and talking to people at different events, it was pretty clear that we were going to get that support again,” he said. “I’m ecstatic that we got (the support) and, you know, once again, indebted to our community for supporting kids, supporting our unique small town and small school district and allowing us to really set ourselves up for, I mean, the very long future related to being a successful public education institution. So we’re just gonna be able to thrive now because of it, which is fantastic.” The bond’s approval follows a previous $55 million bond that the district received approval for in 2021. The money wasn’t enough to complete the scope of what Clawson wanted to do, so it decided to go for another bond. The scope of the work the bond can now cover includes new painted ceilings, furniture, and new exterior windows and doors. “Obviously the 2021 work continues,”

Shellenbarger said. “That will go another year and a half or so. A lot of this work will happen simultaneously. We’ve already started the planning process related to that new 2023 scope of work now that the decisions on what we’re going to do have already been made, and that was part of the process we presented to the community. Those decisions have already been made, but how we do those things and with whom, that’s next. “(It’s) based on timing, what can we do during the school year, what do we have to do after the school year, during the summer, getting bids together, finding out who can do that work and how much to stay underneath our budget,” he continued. “So all of that planning will begin now, and then I would say the $25.5 million with that 2023 bond, you know that first shovel will go in the ground … likely this school year. So it’ll happen concurrently with the work that was already happening from our 2021 bond scope.”

Francis said the district will work with building leaders and design teams to start the design process soon and determine the next steps. “We have all the conceptual ideas that’s now going from conceptual ideas and projects that the community approved to now the specifics of the design and working with our staff to go through that process,” he said. “Then it goes into a bid process and then shovels start to go into the ground and make those improvements across the district. It’s about a three and a half year timeline. this great city forward,” she said. “It certainly was not without its challenges, but I am truly proud of what we all have accomplished together over the years.” Paruch was first elected to the City Commission in 1979 at the age of 28. She later would run — and win her bid— to become mayor 10 years later. She won reelection in 1991 but decided not to run for another term and instead pursued a career in law. Paruch returned to the commission in 2014 after she was appointed to serve a term vacated by Peggy Goodwin. Paruch will remain on leave for the duration of her term, which will expire at the end of the year. She already had planned to not seek reelection to the commission. The commission will not appoint a replacement during this time. After her initial announcement of her decision, Paruch stated in a Facebook post her thanks for the “overwhelming amount of support, prayers and good wishes” from everyone’s messages. “I have read through tears every single email, card, and message, and the flowers and tokens of good will that have been sent are a joy to behold. Thank you from the bottom of my heart,” she said. “As to how I am doing, I’m weak but able to walk from the easy chair to the shady patio on my own with someone at my elbow. I’m still getting visitors and can still discuss city stuff if people have questions. Some days I sleep a lot. This respite period has been a truly wonderful opportunity for us as a family to go through old photos, Grandma’s recipe books, and family heirlooms, and to tell great stories. The tissue box is always close by. Not everyone is given this blessed opportunity,” she continued. “We are so fortunate to live in such a caring community. Our family is grateful for everything that you’ve done to support us. I love you all.” Mayor Michael Fournier spent about 10 years working with Paruch on the commission. He told C & G Newspapers that she was “ever present” with her demeanor, temperament and well-researched approach to every subject, no matter how contentious the issue might be. Fournier said the job is a tough one, but it was made easier with someone like Paruch around to be a mentor. “She’s a reminder about how this job is a selfless duty and that nothing really would get to her, because she just understands that everything that she’s doing is … for the community,” he said. “She would always — very succinctly, before she’d cast a vote — would explain, like a seasoned trial attorney, explain the situation, the facts, the duties we’re charged with, and the rationale for what the proper vote would be,” he continued. “I think often that’s missed in contemporary politics. Today, everything’s about emotion and fear and fanning flames. Well, for decades, Pat has always been that ideal example and inspiration of what an elected public servant should be.” At its Aug. 14 meeting, the Royal Oak City Commission voted to approve a recommendation to rename Waterworks Park to Patricia Paruch Park. Located on Marywood Drive and Lloyd Avenue, the park will be rechristened to honor the longtime public servant. “It’s a shame that sometimes you wait till people pass before we tell them how much we respect and love them,” Fournier said. “I think, anyways, a park would have been named after her when you look at her history. WHAT HOMEOWNERS CAN DO TO PREPARE FOR AND COPE WITH POWER OUTAGES

t’s been 20 years since metro Detroit and a large portion of the northeastern United States underwent a massive blackout that lasted for a couple of days. Much like that blackout, homeowners never know when a power outage will strike, but they can be prepared for when one occurs. According to DTE Energy, the majority of power outages in the U.S., around 62%, are caused by weather or tree-related incidents. Other outage causes include equipment failure, public or animal contact, power grid failures or maintenance. The company states that, during a major storm, its priority in power restoration starts with hospitals, nursing care facilities, police and fire stations, radio and television stations, and sanitary pumping facilities. The focus after those facilities turns to households and businesses, starting with electrical circuits where the largest numbers of customers are without power. There are efforts that residents can take to mitigate any potential damage to their appliances or to restore some power to their homes. Many homeowners might turn to purchasing their own standby generators to get some power back. Maria Handlen, the office manager for Joe Pizik Electric in Troy, said the type of generator to buy can depend on what a homeowner is looking for. “You know what you want to operate when the power is out. So that determines what size (for a generator),” she said. “So you kind of know what you want when the power does go out. … Some people want furnaces, and some people don’t want the AC; some do.” Air-cooled generators can run from $8,000 to $15,000, Handlen said, and they can go up higher if you’re looking for a liquid-cooled generator. “Some homes have to have liquid cooling because they’re so big,” she said. “Let’s say if (your home is) 6,000 square feet and got multiple furnaces and AC’s, you’re going to have to go with a liquid-cooled unit. Air-cooled ain’t gonna work for your home. So most average homes, you know, 4,000 (square feet and) under, 5,000 (square feet and) under can operate with an air-cooled generator.” Handlen noted that it’s hard to get generators installed because there’s a lot involved in the process. “Generators start at just under $4,000 for a standby generator. That’s the cost of the generator. Then you get mechanical and

your electrical. You know, there’s two trades, you gotta have permits. There’s a lot involved. I mean, it’s an all-day job,” she said. “Inspections that gotta happen. I mean, you got a mechanical guy doing all the gas piping, you got an electrician, multiple electricians there installing this. It’s a pretty big deal.” For people who get portable generators instead of standby generators, Jack Blanchard, Berkley’s emergency manager and former city councilman, said homeowners should not have a generator run too close to their home or window, as it might lead to carbon monoxide entering the house. “We see that some people just set it outside the window so they can run a cord in a window or something, and then they’re getting exhaust fumes in and don’t even realize that,” he said. Outside of purchasing a generator, some tips for when the power goes out can be as simple as keeping fridges and freezers closed for the outage’s duration. Blanchard said this is important for food safety. He also said it’s important to unplug all appliances while the power is out. “(It’s) to make sure that when the power comes back on, you get a surge, your computers are not going to get blasted so that they will survive. Any other major appliances, you should shut down the power by (turning off ) the circuit breakers.” Some homeowners also might have to be concerned about pets that depend on electrically powered habitats, such as fish. Ethan Fogle, owner of Fishy Bizz in Farmington, said owners can obtain battery-powered air pumps to keep the oxygen running in their fish tanks. “If you’re worried about getting really hot, you can just do, like, cold water changes, do a water change on the tank and, you know, use cooler water to kind of cool the water down … so it doesn’t get too hot for the fish, and then, like, a batterypowered air pump so you can keep oxygen going,” he said. In terms of how quickly a fish owner needs to act to get a battery or change water, Fogle said this depends on the size of the tank and the fish. “A bigger fish is gonna use oxygen up a lot quicker,” he said. “So there’s more urgency with larger fish. … They’re larger so they’re gonna use the oxygen up in the water quicker. The urgency is more with them versus smaller fish that really can live in small amounts of water, don’t use as much oxygen. “So the larger the fish, the quicker you want to act on making sure that there’s oxygen going in the tank with a USB air pump or a battery-powered air pump and then cooling the tank, too. It doesn’t really have anything to do with the size. It’s just if it gets too warm, they don’t do well and when the water gets warmer, the oxygen levels Shutterstock image drop naturally,” Fogle said.

McDonald held executive positions in automotive communication with various companies over the years. That includes Volkswagen of America, Mazda, Porsche, Audi and ThyssenKrupp. His primary responsibility was to maintain a relationship with the company he was working for and the media. He was always available, for instance, when a new car was unveiled. “We’d launch new vehicles, maybe at a racetrack, or we’d go to places with good roads,” he said. “We’d give journalists the opportunity to drive the car on the racetrack. When the media person had a question, they could call the PR person. We always took an honest approach. I always thought of myself as the conscience of the company. “I started working in 1967, and in 2021, I fully retired. I hung up my car keys, as they say,” the U.S. Army veteran said. “I have enjoyed every moment of my working career. I traveled around the world and met people. I have my friends in automotive media throughout the country and throughout the world I stay in touch with.” He also stays in contact with many people at the M1 Concourse. “We’re friendly people. We’re outgoing,”

McDonald said. “We love to talk about our cars. There’s such a variety of cars and people. Everyone from a 1910 Ford Model T to a 2020 Porsche 918. There are a lot of exotic cars. We have race car drivers, collectors, Corvette guys, Mustang guys.” He also said the M1 Concourse is not a racetrack but rather a performance track. And safety is a priority. “All the cars have to be inspected every year — brakes, tires inspection — to make sure the cars are in good shape,” McDonald said. “It’s a great feeling,” McDonald said of driving along the track. “You’re feeling the Gforce on a turn. You’re feeling the braking and the acceleration. It’s like if you ride a horse. You’re feeling the motion of the horse.” Car owners are allotted a certain number of hours to use the track, and those times shift between morning, afternoon and evening. Each condominium has an official address and a pit lane number. The general public is invited to the M1 Concourse “Cars & Coffee” on the first Saturday of the month from April through October. The time is 8–11 a.m. Each show has a special vehicle theme. The Sept. 2 theme is Ford, Lincoln and Mercury. The Oct. 7 theme is Japanese Domestic Manufacturing and Asian Brands. and “Air” statue scenes, the first two boulders in the War in Words, and the installation of “Joe” on the war front portion of the “Land” scene. President of the WWII Legacy Memorial John Maten said that if he could summarize the installation in one word, it would be “connection.” “How does this memorial help us do that? The statue of a soldier reading a letter from home in the memorial exemplifies this in many ways. Those letters were the instruments that allowed the soldiers and the family to stay connected as best they could,” he said. He also pointed out a quote on the statue from Cpl. Aarol W. “Bud” Irish, of Hemlock, that in part reads, “I can’t even start to explain how much the letter means over here. Just keep the letters coming and I’ll do the rest.” Future work planned for the memorial includes a goal to raise $300,000 to build the Wall of Stars, which would honor the 15,458 Michigan lives lost during World War II. Maten noted the statue of a soldier reading a letter was modeled after the father of the sculptor, Larry Halbert, and that there

are plans to make another scene a ways from the statue that would represent the parents of that soldier. “The reason we put it (away from the statue) is to represent the distance between the homefront and the war front, and that continuous connection that they had by way of their letters,” he said. “Another connection it makes is across the generations. As we lay down these paver bricks, we read the stories of the greatest generation. As we watch people find the bricks of loved ones, we see the emotions well and a memory come to life. You don’t even have to know the person to feel a connection to them.” Helping celebrate the dedication were two veterans of World War II, Art Fishman and Frances Masters. Fishman, a Navy veteran, remembered standing in the park 10 years ago when he was first told about the plans to create a memorial. He said he’s been able to see the national World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., and that his next goal was to live long enough to see this memorial. “As you walk through these bricks, you’re walking with the Greatest Generation,” he said. Masters was a Rosie the Riveter at the Willow Run bomber plant, which she joined right after high school. Her two brothers and

I have no regrets.” Mark Reed, a member of both the Marines and Navy who served in Desert Storm, was taking in the memorial and Walk of Honor. He said the memorial was “long overdue.”

OK2SAY shows increase in reports

METRO DETROIT — On July 25, the office of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer released an annual report that showed Michigan State Police logged more than 7,400 tips from OK2SAY in 2022, which was a 19% increase from the previous year. OK2SAY is a student safety program which allows anyone to confidentially report tips on criminal activities or potential harm directed at Michigan students, school employees or schools. Tips can include reports on bullying, individual threats to a specific person, drugs and alcohol use, harassment and depression. OK2SAY is available 24/7 and tips can be submitted by calling (855) 5652729 or texting to 652729, which stands for OK2SAY. Tipsters also can send an email to OK2SAY@mi.gov or at the website michigan.gov/ok2say. The OK2SAY mobile app is available for download in app stores for iPhone and Android. Initial tips are fielded by Michigan State Police OK2SAY technicians. They are trained to receive, analyze and disseminate tip information to local law enforcement agencies, school officials, community mental health service programs, or the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services for a timely response. The state’s fiscal year 2024 budget includes an additional $378,000 to support the hiring of three more OK2SAY technicians to respond to the increasing number of tips.

Troy High HOSA team achieves success at national conference Troy High School’s Health Occupations Students of America team recently returned with many accolades from the International Leadership Conference in Dallas. This competitive conference took place June 20-25 and welcomed more than 12,000 students from the United States, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Canada, American Samoa and China. Twenty-eight Troy High students accompanied team moderator Angie Griesmann to this year’s conference. HOSA is a national organization formed to promote physical, mental and social well-being; develop effective leadership qualities and skills; and develop the ability to communicate more with people both inside and outside the organization. Top awards were received by several Troy High students, including Ria Lattupalli, who placed third in the International in Healthy Lifestyle category; Fiona Samson, who placed second in the International in Biotechnology
