Trump headlines event, named ‘Man of the Decade’

NOVI — The Oakland County Republican Party welcomed former president Donald Trump as its key speaker and recipient of its “Man of the Decade” award at its annual Lincoln Day Dinner on June 25.

The event, taking place at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, was a hectic site of Republican supporters from around the southeast Michigan area gathering to hear the former president speak on his perspective for the country and his views on running again in 2024.

“On Nov. 5, 2024, we are going to stand up to the Marxists, the communists, the fascists and the globalists, and we are going to win,” Trump said as he addressed the crowd. “We’re going to evict crooked Joe Biden from the White House.”

Matt Heslop, one of the first students to enter the Novi Adult Transition Center program, which teaches life and employment skills to people ages 18-26 who have various cognitive disabilities, graduated June 8 with a parttime job offer from Chartwells School Dining Services.

Heslop will resume working in the Novi High School cafeteria in the fall — a job he started doing while working toward completing his NATC certification — but this time as part

of the workforce, rather than a student worker.

“Matt is one of our pioneer students in the program,” said Ben Mainka, superintendent of the Novi Community School District, in his remarks during Heslop’s commencement ceremony at the ROAR Center. “Through Matt’s phenomenal journey at NATC, he has worked diligently at daily living skills, functional academics and work-based learning opportunities.”

Novi Woods community honors retiring principal

After 12 years as principal of Novi Woods Elementary School and 28 years with the Novi Community School District, David Ascher officially entered retirement, or as he prefers to think of it, “repurposement,” June 28.

“I’m retiring because I’ve had a wonderful career,” said Ascher. “There’s no drama. There’s only happy emotions. I’ve seen over the years people leave for all different reasons, and I never wanted that. I only wanted to leave when I was happy and leave on my own terms, and I only wanted to leave when I felt like I had done a really great job.”

Ascher grew up in Poynette, Wisconsin, but discovered

his passion for teaching while giving swimming lessons during his college years at Purdue University. After graduating from Purdue, Ascher taught for two years in the West Lafayette School District in Indiana. He then moved to Michigan for his wife, Kimberly, who is from South Lyon, and began teaching at NCSD. Along the way he earned two master’s degrees from Michigan State University. He taught first, fifth and sixth grades, and he was a co-principal at Novi Meadows before coming to Novi Woods.

METRO DETROIT — Volunteers of America Michigan has already started planning for its 14th annual Operation Backpack for the 2023-24 school year.

The back-to-school drive, which began June 19, collects and distributes new backpacks full of grade-specific supplies to children from lowincome households.

Community members are encouraged to sign up to host a drive and begin collecting school supplies including pencils, notebooks, backpacks, folders, pens, crayons and more. The supplies will be used to fill children’s backpacks.

A new law prohibiting drivers from holding and touching cellphones while driving will take effect June 30. The “handsfree” driving law was signed into effect by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer earlier this month. It is the result of three bills, HB 4250, 4251, and 4252, which were introduced in the state Legislature a few months prior.

According to the law, a driver cannot “Send or receive a telephone call; Send, receive, or read a text message; View, record, or transmit a video; Access, read, or post to a social networking site.”

It also states that a driver can’t reach “for a mobile electronic device in a manner that requires a driver to maneuver so that the driver is no longer in a seated driving position, restrained by a seat belt.”

According to Novi Police Cmdr. Jason Meier, “the Novi Police Department has no plans to make any special enforcement efforts but will enforce the law if violations are observed by our patrol officers.”

He was then offered a position at the high school Mainka said that the barriers to gainful employment for someone with a disability are “tremendous.” According to Mainka, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that in 2022, only 21% of people with cognitive disabilities gained employment.

Adult transition coordinator Kristin Corrion said that she always cries at the graduations, because she knows how hard her students work to get to that point.

“They work harder at everything that they do to accomplish the things that they do,” Corrion said.

Corrion has worked with Heslop for the last 19 years and recalled that the first time they met, he talked her ear off about gym — his favorite class at the time. Heslop told C & G Newspapers that he still loves sports, such as basketball and bowling, and is looking forward to playing baseball this summer. His mom said he is very good at bowling and that his highest score was in the 240s.

Corrion described Heslop as a hard worker.

She said he is driven to complete any task he is given, enjoys work, loves interacting with people and has a great sense of humor. She said he also loves movies and can quote the vast majority of them.

“He takes a lot of pride in everything he does. He is never absent. He is just a great worker,” Corrion said.

Mainka said that Heslop is an “inspiration” to all. He said that Heslop showed people “the power in inclusivity.” According to Mainka, Heslop is an example for other NATC students as they pursue their certificates of completion.

“Matt’s accomplishments are another example to us that with the collective effort of family, school and the local community, our students are exactly what we all want our young adults to strive for — to become active contributors to society,” Mainka said. “He has also shown us that no matter what limits society puts on people with significant challenges, given the right tools, met with opportunity, the sky’s the limit. He has also shown us that a disability should not define a person’s future and that it is possible to shatter societal barriers.”

Corrion spoke highly of Heslop’s family, saying they had a great understanding of autism.

Heslop’s mother, Linda, praised the staff and the program.

“It takes a community, like everybody says, just working with him,” said Linda Heslop. “I can’t say enough wonderful things about everybody.”

“Matt was the life of the classroom,” said his instructor, Sebrina Shields. “I’m going to miss him; he makes me laugh all the time.”

“He just always brings a smile to everyone’s face,” said Heslop’s teacher, Brad Therrian, aka

Mr. T, whom Heslop worked for as a teacher assistant.

Shailee Patel, the NCSD’s director of special education, said that Michigan is one of the few states that still offers students who have special needs public education until age 26. She said it is an honor to see the students graduate.

“You can see their perseverance, their growth, just their whole entire opportunity to be part of the community,” said Patel.

She said Heslop will continue to do well as he continues working five days a week at the high school. She said the position will allow him not only to mingle with people, but to also continue to interact with staff and students who know him so well.

“Matt, I have watched you grow and bloom and mature over these last 19 years, and I couldn’t be more proud to walk across the stage with you and graduate with you this year,” Corrion said in between tears. Corrion retired at the end of the school year.

Linda Heslop said her son had to work very hard to get to this point. She said it wasn’t easy and that he was extremely stubborn when he was younger. With autism, she said, anything new is hard, so they have to prepare him quite a bit for things such as job interviews.

“I’ve learned to appreciate the baby steps,” she said, adding that she advises other parents whose children have disabilities to do the same.

“Accept the baby steps, because not everything is going to be huge leaps.”

help a student,” said Ascher. ‘It’s pretty easy to help the student or students who know the material or learning comes easy for them, but when they’ve had to overcome something, whether it’s a learning issue or an emotional struggle, or something traumatized from their home … helping students who maybe have emotional struggles or learning struggles and to know that maybe you’ve been able to help them just a bit, really, really is remarkable. And you don’t always know right away. What I have learned is that you don’t always realize the impact that you make sometimes for years later.”

He shared that since he announced his retirement, numerous colleagues and students have come out of the woodwork to share how much of an impact he made on their lives. He said that often they have spoken of things that he did that at the time he didn’t think were a big deal, but that ultimately made big impacts on the lives of students, parents or fellow educators.

For example, Ascher said he had a former student tell him that she was inspired by a comment he had told her in the fifth grade — to smile because she would learn more and have more fun. That student is now a teacher.

He said he once felt urged, with no idea why, to call and check on a colleague. He called and left her a voicemail, saying he just felt compelled to check on her. The teacher told him a year later that she had saved that voicemail, as when he called she had been going through a difficult time, and his words had helped her to get through it.

Ascher said one of his favorite things he has done at Novi Woods is to help implement the Lead with PAWS program, which teaches kids to Practice kindness, Act safely, Work together and Show respect. Through the program, he has made over 6,000 positive phone calls to parents to compliment students for doing something extraordinary.

“So much of what we do as educators, and really people, is about making connections, and I’ve tried my best to focus on the positives and reach out to people,” he said.

“It’s meant so much to me that I’ve been able to focus on the positives.”

In honor of his retirement, many people gathered May 22 at “The Nest,” which is an outdoor learning area that features a garden and an amphitheater, to surprise Ascher and dedicate the area to him as part of his legacy at Novi Woods.

The cast iron plaque was made by Mike Engerer, of Printnology Inc., whose kids attended Novi Woods, and it was funded

by staff donations. It reads in part, “During his time at Novi Woods Mr. David Ascher taught us many things. He taught us to have grit and to hold high expectations.

He showed us the importance of building a strong school community and reaching out to others.”

A Buddleja davidii, also known as a summer lilac or butterfly bush, will grace the garden at the Nest. Fourth grade teacher Michelle Donberger said the plant was perfect, as it has “David” in its Latin name.

“David has helped us grow so much and in so many ways,” said Donberger. “What a great symbol to have this butterfly bush here, that you will always have your roots here with us, but you really have helped us to grow and flower and bring wonderful things to Novi Woods, just like this butterfly bush will bring wonderful things to this garden.”

“Hopefully, it will smell better than me,” Ascher joked.

The majority of the Novi Woods staff were in attendance at the surprise dedication, and many were dressed as Ascher for a theme day, by either wearing Purdue or Wisconsin shirts, or dressing in his traditionalstyle shirt.

“The great thing about Mr. Ascher is that he cares deeply about people,” said Donberger. “So if he sees some sort of problem or issue, he’s going to work to make it right.”

Donberger said that Ascher created lots of things to help the large population of Japanese students who come to the school who do not yet speak English. She said he made an introductory book in Japanese that shows where all the different rooms in the school are and what each class looks like. She said he found a need for the kids to be able to connect with other kids and not feel alone.

only that, we also have residents who are impacted by this disease in our assisted living or independent living house.”

This was the first time that Rose Senior Living Providence Park had held an Alzheimer’s awareness walk. Known as “Alzheimer’s Longest Day,” walks are held annually on the summer solstice, as it is the day with the most daylight, in an effort to “shine a light” on the disease as well as raise funds to go toward research for a cure.

“Every year we do this on the summer solstice, because we want to shed light and help eradicate the darkness of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia,” said Kathryn Ribant Payne, of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Approximately 100 people participated in the event, which featured the option of a 1-mile walk or run on the wetland trails around Rose Senior Living Providence Park, or a shorter walk of 0.35 miles around the campus buildings. Staff was manning the barbecue, serving free hamburgers and chicken sandwiches, as well as chips, water and pop. An ice cream stand was available to give participants a sweet way to cool down after the walk.

“I thought it was good,” said Darby. “A lot of family members and residents walked the long path, which was exciting to me.”

In total, the event raised just shy of $11,000. Darby, along with members of her

staff and staff from Ascension Providence, presented a check for $10,800 to the Alzheimer’s Association just prior to the walk.

Those who donated were given a commemorative purple metal water bottle and drink cozy. The color purple is representative of the disease.

Ribant Payne said the funds raised will provide care and support for those who suffer from the disease, as well as for those who are caring for someone with the disease. She said the funds will also go toward advancing the organization’s research on the disease.

According to Ribant Payne, the Alzheimer’s Association is the top private funder of research to find a cure for the disease in the world.

“We really want to realize our Alzheimer’s Association vision, which is a world without Alzheiemer’s and other dementia,” she said. “So the funds you raised will go directly towards that research so, hopefully, we get there one day.”

Rose Senior Living Providence Park residents Bill and Jane Balwinski said they participated in the event because they live on the grounds and they have seen the effects that Alzheimer’s disease has had on others.

“I’ve been acquainted enough to the problems that these people have,” said Bill Balwinski. “We think it’s a very, very important thing, and a very localized situation.

Yes, we have no problem with doing something like this around us. It’s a good cause.”

“They have taken almost 50% of (our) manufacturing ability and brought it into other countries,” said Trump. “I ended the disaster known as NAFTA, the worst trade deal ever made, and replaced it with the best trade deal ever made, the (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement). This is creating tens of thousands of jobs in the United States.”

The most common thread in his speech was his criticism of President Joe Biden.

“No one has betrayed Michigan more than crooked Joe Biden. He’s betrayed you because he’s allowing people to take away your job in a way that no one has ever seen before,” said Trump.

“For three years, Biden and his radical left allies have waged war on American auto workers in his ridiculous crusade to force everyone into electric cars.”

He went on to criticize the Biden administration’s focus on environmental protection, saying that he hopes to utilize untapped oil resources on American soil

and claimed he would be able to end the war in Ukraine “in 24 hours” but failed to specify how he plans to do so.

Trump stated that he wants to institute a new trade policy he called the “Trump Reciprocal Trade Act” wherein any country placing tariffs on American-made products would have equal tariffs placed on their products entering the United States.

Democratic National Committee spokesperson Rhyan Lake released a statement June 25 prior to Trump’s visit to Michigan.

“Donald Trump spent four years making endless promises to Michiganders, but under his watch, auto companies shipped jobs overseas, leaving thousands of hardworking Michiganders jobless. While President Biden and Vice President Harris have delivered an American manufacturing boom, including thousands of new auto jobs in the Great Lakes state and across the country, Trump has only doubled down on his MAGA agenda and has promised to roll back President Biden and Democrats’ policies that have helped bring back hundreds of thousands of manufacturing jobs,” Lake stated.

Green said Abler’s leadership is something the team will miss going into next season.

“Andrew Abler has just been sensational as far as his leadership on and off the field with the GPA and just the whole package,” Green said. “He’s been outstanding. He’s the student athlete everybody wants their kid to be.”

A state title was a perfect ending for his senior year, and a text from his all-state teammate Bennett just added icing on the cake of Abler’s list of accomplishments.

Green got to Bennett first about the all-state news, and Bennett played spoiler for Abler just a few minutes before Green called Abler.

Almost throwing a sub-1 ERA this year, Abler said his pitch mix was a key factor in his success.

“I definitely most improved with my off-speed pitches,” Abler said. “I worked to develop a curve and a slider, and it led to a lot more strikeouts.”

Rinke called the event “ground zero in Michigan for Republicans” while James said the focus of the party at this time needs to be to “rally the troops” and prepare for the 2024 presidential election.

Thousands of other Trump supporters descended on the Suburban Collection Showplace for the chance to hear the former president speak.

“I am here today collecting signatures for the Trump campaign,” said event volunteer Scott Peterson, of Wixom. “I think he’s been the best president of my lifetime, and I did go through Ronald Reagan. I was not an initial Trump supporter when he was initially running. I supported him when he became the nominee, and when he became president, it was like ‘this man is here to help our country’ and I am going to do whatever I can to do that.”

A common theme among the supporters was that they believe Trump will turn the country around from what they consider to be a poor state.

“I think he stopped our downward spiral and got us back to having a little more

“There’s some family-friendly rivalry, but that’s really it,” Bennett said. “When our schools face, we’re always rooting for each other.”

“I think (the allegations) are just a political stunt from some of the people who really hate him,” said Kent County GOP member Melinda Balberdy. “I don’t believe that he’s guilty at all. There’s a lot of misconceptions of what is going on in the government.”

“I do not believe that he has done anything wrong,” added fellow Kent County GOP member Denise Hibbard. “He has always been supportive of the American people. He has been honest, truthful, and the other party is jealous that we are better under his leadership.”

Kokone Wakui, 14, shared that when she first came to Novi Woods as a kindergartener she couldn’t speak English, and that Ascher, who does not speak Japanese, found ways to break the communication barrier and encouraged her to learn English.

“If it weren’t for him, I don’t think I’d be speaking English right now,” Wakui said.

Shion Wakui, 12, said that Ascher’s simple act of remembering his name really made him happy and want to learn English.

Kokone and Shion’s mother, Akiko, recalled how Ascher had given Kokone a card with emoji on it so that she could tell him how she was feeling every day, and said that it really made a difference.

“He is special because he is very present.

He is not the type of principal that just stays in his office. He’s in classrooms. He wants to be involved with whatever you’re doing, and he usually supports whatever you’re doing,” said a Danielle Courtemanche, Novi Woods kindergarten teacher.

Ascher said that they’ve worked really hard to shine light on all the varying types of diversity within the district and at Novi Woods, and to welcome all the differences.

On June 9, Ascher was also honored to be the caboose of the train of fourth graders who were clapped out on the last day of school. He said he was asked to be the engine, but declined to give that to a retiring first grade teacher. He said he wanted to make sure his retirement did not take away from the students receiving their honorable clap-out.

“I’m grateful for the recognition, but Novi and Novi Woods are in a great place, and I’m glad to have been a part of it,” Ascher said.

He said he is looking forward to “reinventing” himself. He said a retired friend of his advised him to not call it retirement, but rather “repurposement,” because retired people need to find a new purpose.

“Sometimes when you are retiring, it feels like you are writing your own eulogy,” Ascher said. “People will come give you a hug, and they get you all teary-eyed, and I’m like, ‘Look, I’m not dying here. I’m just not going to be at Novi Woods every single day.

So we can still be friends. Here’s my phone number. Call me. We’ll talk about it.’ Yeah, it’s wild.”

Ascher said he will now focus on being a great husband and dad to his two adult children. He said his parents are aging and he plans on being able to spend more time
