EASTPOINTE — As the Eastpointe Cruisin’ Gratiot opening ceremony began June 17, a group of Eastpointe Public Safety officers gathered in front of the stage. They were recognized as this year’s grand marshal during the VIP parade. “We greatly appreciate the cruise committee honoring us this year and all the hard work the men and women of the Eastpointe Police Department do. The men and women before you work their hearts out every day to make this community safe,” Deputy Chief Matthew Hambright said. “We thank everybody on the cruise committee and what they have done to set up this great event again this year.” The opening ceremony also included several prayers from local pastors and also from the Public Safety Department’s four chaplains: Kevin Lancaster, of fire services, and James

Horns honked, spectators watched in delight and nostalgia surfaced as classic car owners cruised the avenue. Man arraigned in Eastpointe for allegedly killing brother BY BRIAN WELLS bwell@candgnews.com

EASTPOINTE — A 42-year-old man was arraigned June 20 in connection with a fatal shooting in Eastpointe that took place several days prior. At approximately 3:30 p.m. June
16, a male entered the Eastpointe Police Department and stated that his uncle was possibly murdered in a home in the 16000 block of Stricker Avenue, in the general area of Eight Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue, according to a press release from the department. Officers and detectives conducted
an investigation at the home and were able to locate the suspect, who was then interviewed and taken into custody. Officers also located signs of foul play. A press release sent by the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office June 20 stated that the suspect, identified as 42-year-old McKinnley Hearon, had

told officers his brother was not home, but police said the body was located behind the house. The Prosecutor’s Office stated in a press release that McKinnley Hearon shot his brother after an argument. Hearon is facing charges of secondSee ARRAIGNMENT on page 6A

Eastpointe police chief update The story “New Eastpointe police chief is no stranger to policing, community,” published in the June 21 edition, should have said that Matthew Hambright had been promoted to deputy chief of the Eastpointe Police Department. George Rouhib, who was hired as Eastpointe’s director of public safety in 2018, was recently named chief of police in Rochester. His last official day with Eastpointe was scheduled to be June 25. At press time, the city had signed former Madison Heights Police Chief Corey Haines to a provisional appointment, which will begin June 30 and will last for 120 days, Eastpointe City Manager Mariah Walton said. Following the civil service charter, the permanent position of chief will be posted internally to seek qualified applicants, and if needed, it will be posted externally following that, she said. Walton said that if Haines is interested in remaining in the position, he will be able to apply for Haines it if it gets posted externally. METRO DETROIT — Volunteers of America Michigan has already started planning for its 14th annual Operation Backpack for the 2023-24 school year. The back-to-school drive, which began June 19, collects and distributes new backpacks full of grade-specific supplies to children from low-income households. Community members are encouraged to sign up to host a drive and begin collecting school supplies including pencils, notebooks, backpacks, folders, pens, crayons and more. The supplies will be used to fill children’s backpacks. Roseville Middle School teacher receives grant WARREN/ROSEVILLE — Roseville Middle School teacher Megan Baranski was recognized at the June 20 Extra Credit Union annual Excellence Awards Luncheon in Warren. Baranski received a $500 school employee grant to purchase various games for students to use during indoor lunch.
Eastpointe Community Schools honors retirees EASTPOINTE — At the June 12 Eastpointe Community Schools Board of Education meeting, the school board honored the seven employees who retired at the end of the 2022-23 school year. The educators each received a school bell in recognition of their retirements. Present at the meeting, pictured from left, were Julie Kaler, Sandra Young, Elaine Achs and Laurie Hillebrand. Kaler, who worked in the district for 36 years, most recently taught at Crescentwood Elementary School. After 29 years teaching in the district, Young retired from Bellview Elementary School. Achs retired as a Pleasantview Elementary School teacher and was with the district for 26 years. Hillebrand, Pleasantview Elementary’s principal, retired after 32 years with Eastpointe Community Schools. Also honored but not present at the meeting were: Lisa Kopitz, a Pleasantview Elementary teacher with 26 years of service; Richard MacDonald, an Eastpointe Middle School teacher with 26 years in the district; and Suzan Toth, an Eastpointe High School teacher with 31 years in the district.

MACOMB COUNTY — On June 19, the Macomb Intermediate School District announced the Macomb County schools 2023 literacy ambassadors. The ambassadors are chosen based upon their dedication to support literacy in their districts. Teacher Brooke VanRhee was chosen in Eastpointe Community Schools. Roseville Community Schools Board of Education President Theresa Genest and Trustee Michelle Williams-Ward were chosen for Roseville. In 2019, the MISD began a countywide, comprehensive campaign to promote literacy in Macomb County. Literacy ambassadors will be invited to promote and participate in upcoming countywide events that encourage reading.

METRO DETROIT — As Fourth of July parades ready for substantial crowds, families prepare for get-togethers with loved ones, and the feeling of patriotism is in full swing, the American flag will be on display tenfold. While patriotic behavior is appreciated, it’s important to understand the proper etiquette of displaying the American flag. Mike Sand is the public information officer of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6691 in Fraser and a Vietnam veteran, and Sand said there are common parts of the U.S. flag code that are overlooked today. “There’s a lot of standard procedures you have to follow, but what amazes me is a lot of people don’t,” Sand said. “For example, you’re not supposed to wear the American flag as clothing, and people do that. You’re not supposed to carry the flag flat,

ROSEVILLE — A 37-year-old Detroit man was found guilty in mid-June in Macomb County Circuit Court of two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Following a four-day jury trial that ended June 16, Dewon Henderson was Henderson found guilty of the two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a person under 13, defendant over 17. In December 2021, Henderson sexually assaulted his stepchild in a Roseville hotel,

degree murder, a lifetime felony; tampering with evidence, a 10-year felony; lying to police officers, a four-year felony; and felony firearm, a two-year felony. He was arraigned June 20 in the 38th District Court in Eastpointe by Magistrate Mark Makoski, who set bond at $2 million cash or surety, and if released, he must wear a GPS steel cuff tether and have no access to firearms. He was also

Another one is, ‘Oh, you can’t burn the flag.’ Well, we call it ‘retire.’ We retire the flags by burning, because that’s what the flag code suggests.” For people who are uncomfortable with ‘retiring’ their American flags themselves, the VFW, local Scout troops, and local flag shops such as American Flag and Banner Co. in Clawson will accept your flag for retirement. This verdict is a step forward in creating a safer society, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to pursuing justice for all survivors.” Joshua Jones, Henderson’s attorney, declined to comment. — Brian Wells referred to Macomb County Community Mental Health for an evaluation. Hearon is scheduled for a probable cause hearing at 1 p.m. June 28 and a preliminary exam at 1 p.m. July 5, both in the 38th District Court in Eastpointe. Jane Miles, the owner of American Flag and Banner Co. for 44 years, said there’s one aspect of flag etiquette that can be harmful to the flag if not followed. “You should take it down in inclement weather, because it’s beating up the flag for no reason, but people don’t go out in the middle of a tornado to take it down,” Miles said. “If it’s out there, it stays out there in bad weather. It’s not respectful to the flag, but if you’re a true patriot that wants to fly it 24/7, then you’re very respectful. orty years ago, the Pontiac Fiero drove off the lot for the first time and found its niche in the sports car community. Although the two-seater car was only in production for five years, from 1983 to 1988, there are still Pontiac Fiero owners nationwide. To acknowledge the 40-year anniversary of the Pontiac Fiero this year, a celebration will be held July 12-16 in Pontiac. Presented by M1 Concourse, the celebration will bring home the last Pontiacs made in Pontiac, including the very last car ever produced there — a 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT. Other cars that will be on-site include PPG Pace Cars, the 2+2 Fiero prototype, other Fiero prototypes and special cars from the GM Heritage Center collection. There will be a collection of Fiero vehicles on display. Members of the Pontiac Motorsports Division, Pontiac Design Studio and Pontiac Engineering are expected to attend. The Pontiac Transportation Museum, also a sponsor of the event, will collect oral history testimonies to document individual stories. The three original 1984 Indy Pace Cars are confirmed to be at the event, marking the first time all three cars have been together since race day nearly 40 years ago. In his late teens, William owned a 1958 Biscayne. “That was my first car,” said William, who purchased it from his Aunt Sally. “I got $50 from my mom and dad when I graduated from Warren Woods High School in 1970. I was a young kid and drove the heck out of it.” John said the car always attracts attention from people. “They’re all mostly friendly. Even the police will pull up and talk,” he said. “I like sitting on the passenger side while he’s driving. My official job is to wave when they wave to me.”
‘I sold the car in 1967 to raise money for our wedding’
Wanted: A 1963 Pontiac Grand Prix to restore. Call Ron in Harper Woods. That was just part of the classified advertisement Harper Woods resident Ron Andras placed in a local newspaper in 2005. Andras was in luck. “A guy called from Saginaw, Michigan. He saw my ad,” Andras said while attending the car show. “I didn’t know him.” The caller had found the vehicle Andras was looking for; it was inside a barn. After paying $750 to have the car hauled via trailer to him, plus a $4,000 finder’s fee to the caller, the Grand Prix now belonged to Andras. This marks the second time Andras, who turns 81 in July, has owned a ’63 Pontiac Grand Prix. “I had one back in 1965 when I was 23 years old,” Andras said. “I bought it at Burke Pontiac at Six Mile and Gratiot in Detroit. “My wife and I came from large families. I sold the car in 1967 to raise money for our wedding.” When attending car shows, Andras is not interested in winning plaques or trophies. “What I do enjoy are the conversations with people and how I found the car and restored it,” Andras said. Clinton Township resident Lou Comai-
anni likes to restore cars. His latest project was a 1964 Ford Econoline van he brought to the EHS car show. “I found it in New York online and had it shipped to Michigan,” he said of the matblack-and-pearl-red van. “I D.J. on the side. I needed a vehicle that would be old school and retro, and that would carry a lot of equipment. I got a classic car and it’s functional.” In honor of Michigan’s winter and summer seasons, the 60-year-old keeps a surfboard and a toboggan on the roof of the van. “It gets a lot of looks. It’s been a lot of fun. I go to any car show I can get to,” Comaianni said. “It’s like a little school bus. It’s

got a big steering wheel. You can make a Uturn on a dime.” Comaianni is forever talking to other car owners when at cruises and shows. “We exchange ideas on upgraded motors, wheels, tires, exhaust,” he said. The EHS car show certainly brought back memories for the 1979 Osborn High School graduate. “I grew up at Six Mile (Road) and Gratiot (Avenue),” Comaianni said. “We cruised looking for girls, going to eat. The official cruise began at 1:30 p.m. Cruisers could purchase a pass to ride in the special “cruise lane” closest to the median. In the late morning, the opening ceremony was held in the Eastpointe High School parking lot, where there also was a car show. Classic, hot rod and muscle car owners brought their Dusters, Corvettes, Bel Airs, Mustangs, Trans Ams and more. Kids could get their faces painted, and Rick “Shifty” Gaines made his trademark balloon animals. Laura Matte, of Clinton Township, was one of the VIP passengers. Her brother drove her around the avenue in a 1971 black Corvette Stingray convertible. “(The car) has hit 35 (mph),” Matte said. “I know to hang on.” Matte, a regular at local car shows, wore one of her signature poodle skirts. She finds them at local resale shops, online and at Screamers Costumes in Clinton Township. When she puts on one of her skirts, Matte feels “happy, sunshine, having fun, there are no problems.” Because of her distinguished ’50s style, Matte is known as “Miss Poodle Skirt of Michigan.” She started attending car shows in the 1990s when her parents bought a 1962 Chevy Impala. “I look forward to this,” she said. “The excitement, the people, the cars.” Kay Dee, of Atlanta, Georgia, stopped by the car show with family members. “My dad brought us out to look at the vehicles,” she said. While the car show was smaller than the ones she’s used to in Atlanta, she still saw “some beauties. I’m very impressed.” Twin brothers William and John Richardson, of Warren, brought their 1958 Chevy Biscayne to the car show. Also with them was John’s wife, Deborah Richardson. “I got a key, and he’s got a key. We just had it painted in February,” John, 70, said of the black-and-silver model. “We come here every year. It’s nostalgic.” “The best thing is walking around and talking to people about their cars,” Deborah, 67, said. “I just talked to a guy about his Nova. That was nice.” “I got this car way back in ’98. It came from Kansas and I picked it up in Bay City. This is the second year I’ve had it on the road. It’s only got 6,000 miles on it,” William said. “I rebuilt the engine. It was a 283 engine and now it’s a 327 engine.”

The Midwest Fiero Clubs Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) is reaching out to all past workers — from plant workers to project engineers — to attend. Former employees are welcome to attend the Distinguished Speaker event at the Crofoot Ballroom Hall on July 13.

Jennifer Goss and Fred Bartemeyer are co-chairing the anniversary celebration. “We’d like to get the word out about the event,” said Goss, who resides in Staunton, Virginia. “The reunion is to gather and to reminisce.” So far, 25 people — including people from Washington state, New England and Arizona — have responded, but organizers hope to attract many more. Goss, who will be in attendance, grew up in a family of Fiero enthusiasts. “It’s always been a fun sports car that has a great community,” Goss said. Her dad, Jim Gilbert, even won his own black Fiero after participating in a contest. “He was very excited,” Goss remembered of her dad, who died in 2020. “He loved the car.” Her dad’s winning car is now a keepsake. “I still have it,” Goss said. There are still Fiero buffs in the U.S. and around the world who have hung onto their cars from the ’80s and are collectors like Goss and her husband, who have eight Fieros. “It brings back memories of earlier times in their lives,” Goss said. “The young people, they know how timeless they are. The Fiero
has aged well.” The Midwest Fiero Clubs Region AACA current members include Heartland Fiero Club; Michigan Fiero Club; Wisconsin Fiero Fanatics; Mid-Atlantic Fiero Owners Association; Northern Illinois Fiero Enthusiasts; Kansas City Fiero Owners Group; Minnesota Fieros Forever; Midwest Fieros; North Texas Fiero Club; and Mid-America Fieros. The 10 clubs collaborate to promote and preserve the Pontiac Fiero and the Fiero Community. “We share our interests, passions and friendships,” said Bartemeyer, Midwest Fiero Clubs Region AACA president. “It’s to bring everyone together to have a central resource. We’re a small, close-knit community.” Members don’t have to own a Fiero to join. “You just have to have the interest,” said Bartemeyer, of Davenport, Iowa. “A lot of people join our club to help find them a good car, specifically the Pontiac Fiero.” Bartemeyer bought his first Fiero for $12,000 when he graduated from high school in 1985 at age 18. He saved enough money over the years shoveling snow and mowing lawns. He also took out a small loan to help with the purchase. “I’ve been into cars my entire life. As a young kid with a brand-new car, it was very exciting. It was an incredible experience,” Bartemeyer said. “I took people for rides. It got a lot of use. It was a lot of fun.” One year later, Bartemeyer traded in his ’85 model for a new 1986 Pontiac Fiero GT when they came on the market. “I had to have one,” he said. To date, Bartemeyer owns 26 Fieros, including the 1986 GT model. He’ll bring eight of them to display at next month’s anniversary celebration.
