Bald eagles nesting in Holland Ponds Park NATURALIST, PHOTOGRAPHER TO LEAD HIKE TO SEE THEM THIS SATURDAY

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Local nature photographers have recently spotted two American bald eagles nesting in Shelby Township’s Holland Ponds Park with possible eggs in the nest.

The bald eagle nest was reported to the township by a local photographer on March 9, but township officials have seen photos from other photographers taken as early as March 5.

Utica’s Puppy Parade to return for another canine celebration

UTICA — Utica’s annual Puppy Parade will return at 2 p.m. April 29 with an even bigger event this year.

April is national Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month, and Utica is celebrating with a puppy parade once again. Pets of all ages are welcome.

The parade will begin at Grant Park and end at the Pioneer

Park Dog Park with an escort from Utica fire and police vehicles.

The parade will end at Pioneer Park, where attendees will be able to visit rescue and vendor tents. There will also be some brief speeches from folks involved in advocacy for animal protection.

Pops Sweets on the Streets food truck will also be in attendance with fun foods available.

The tradition each year is to have a special guest, and this guest is not a human, but a dog. Last year’s special guest was See PUPPY on page 7A

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — On March 24, representatives from Shelby Township and the Macomb County Chamber of Commerce came together for the State of the Township address to share a comprehensive look at the recent accomplishments and

plans in the township.

Township Supervisor Rick Stathakis delivered the address at the Amazon Fulfillment Center DET2 facility located within the township.

President and CEO of the Macomb County Chamber Kelley Lovati said it was an impressive turnout for the State of Shelby Township event.

Shelby Township invites residents to take part in 2023 community survey

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Shelby Township is asking residents for their input through a survey to help plan the township’s updates to its master plan and its annual top priorities.

The survey is open until April 10.

Rick Stathakis, the supervisor of Shelby Township, said the 2023 Shelby Township Community Survey is an important step for the township government to gain more feedback from residents.

“The Community Relations Department has done a great job expanding participation in surveys for our master plan updates and annual township priorities, so I’m very excited to see the level of participation we receive in this survey,” he said in an email.

The township selected ETC Institute, an independent consulting company, to administer the survey. ETC Institute will compile the data received and present the results to the Board of Trustees. All survey responses will remain confidential and delivered only in group form.

The survey will provide feedback on Shelby Township services, facilities and programs. In addition, the information the township receives from the survey will be an important part of developing budgets and making important decisions that will shape the township’s future.

Brad Bates, the Shelby Township community relations director, said the 2023 community survey will provide feedback on Shelby Township services, facilities and programs.

“The information will be instrumental in developing budgets and making important decisions to shape the township’s future. In addition, this is the first time in many years that the township has administered an overall community survey, so we can develop a baseline for community sentiment and satisfaction, which we can use as a comparison in the future to gauge success in improvement to our services for the taxpayers and residents,” he said via email.

“This is very exciting, as the area now known as Holland Ponds was deemed a superfund site by the EPA due to contamination by hazardous waste from the adjacent former G&H landfill company. Around this time, the bald eagle nearly went extinct because of human persecution and DDT poisoning. To have bald eagles move into Holland Ponds just goes to show that the habitat is healthy once again. This is truly a conservation success story,” she said in a press release.

She said the eagles may be there for a while, too.

“As long as they feel safe and are successful at rearing young, the two eagles will continue to come back to this nest every winter to have their family. We think based on their behavior that there are eggs. However, we can’t know for sure. They can have one to three eggs in a clutch,” she said via email.

Schultz said naturalists encourage people to get outdoors and enjoy seeing the eagles, with restrictions.

Wildlife photographer and bald eagle observer Joan Bonin reported that the eagles have been seen sitting low in the nest, apparently changing guard and possibly rolling eggs.

“Typically, one to three eggs are laid as early as January, hatching in about five weeks. The chicks take flight at about 3 months old and look nothing like adults. Juveniles are solid brown with mottled white areas underneath their wings. They do not gain their iconic white head and tail until they are about 5 years old,” Schultz said in the press release.

If successful at rearing young, American bald eagles are known to remain monogamous and come back annually to the same nest. The nest starts at about 5 feet wide. However, the township stated that, as the pair adds to it each year, the nest can reach 9 feet in width and weigh thousands of pounds.

The township placed barricades in the park to ensure compliance with the federal guidelines for distance from the eagles. To aid in the enforcement of the guidelines, the Shelby Township Police Department will monitor access points to the trails near the nesting area as well as other portions of Holland Ponds Park. If park patrons see individuals trespassing beyond the barriers, they can call the Shelby Township Police Department nonemergency line at (586) 731-2121.

UTICA — The Dr. Jim Langeveld Bone Marrow Transplant Fund will be hosting its 17th annual Dr. Jim Euchre Tournament April 15 at a new location, American Legion Post #351, 46146 Cass Ave. in Utica. Doors will open at 5:45 p.m. and the games will start at 6:30 p.m.

The cost is $25 per person, and it includes pizza, popcorn, beer, wine, pop and desserts. The event will feature cash prizes, door prizes and a 50/50 raffle. Participants must be at least 18 years old, and they should bring quarters for euchres. There will be a cash bar for mixed drinks.

Dr. Jim Langeveld, pictured, was a Beaumont doctor who died at the age of 30 on Sept. 11, 2002, while waiting for a bone marrow transplant. He left behind a wife and a son who was 1 1/2 at the time. While he was undergoing treatment at the University of Michigan Cancer Center, Langeveld’s family saw many financial hardships that bone marrow transplant patients were enduring. This experience led them to create the Dr. Jim BMT Fund to help patients with their personal expenses that were not covered by medical insurance.

Thanks to hundreds of people over the years, more than $295,000 has been raised for the fund through the annual euchre tournament and golf outings. SHELBY TOWNSHIP — The American Council of Engineering Companies of Michigan recently honored firms for engineering and surveying excellence during the association’s annual Engineering and Surveying Excellence Awards Gala March 11 at the Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park near Grand Rapids.

Eight firms were honored with the Engineering Honorable Conceptor Award for their work, including Anderson, Eckstein and Westrick for the Shelby Township Library project. The new, state-of-the-art, 26,400-square-foot library is located in the township’s growing municipal complex and currently serves 35,000 registered users with a collection of 110,000 items.

Sweet Betty Rose, who is in the care of the Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue. She had suffered abuse that resulted in the loss of an eye and severe burns to much of her body.

The year before, the special guests were Finn and Nugget, who were dogs who suffered abuse and were adopted by two Utica police officers.

This year’s special guest will be Blu, a 2-year-old dog in the care of Saving Destiny Animal Rescue.

Utica Mayor Gus Calandrino said the whole purpose of the Utica Puppy Parade is to bring attention to animal welfare advocacy.

“The Puppy Parade is a positive, family event that celebrates those who work hard to protect the vulnerable and act as a voice for the voiceless. I’m so pleased that the Utica Puppy Parade has grown each year. This year, we have 20 organizations participating.

My goal is to make this a major gathering for animal rescue and advocacy groups,” he said in an email.

Sabrina Stinson, of Saving Destiny Rescue, said that Blu was found dumped on the side of the road in deplorable condition.

“His pelvis was broken, he had spinal cord damage, both of his hips were dislocated, just to list a few. The worst part is he had been like this for a while. Though neither of his legs were in place as they should be, there was so much scar tissue, this held them in the position they were in with zero movement,” she said in an email interview.

She said his back legs bent backward.

So instead of walking on his paw pads as a dog should, he walked on the tops of his

paws.

“They resembled two skinny little crutches he would balance on. He had done so for so long; the top of his paws had worn down to the muscle and bone. Because his legs (were) hyperextended with no give, he would have to tuck his butt under his body in order to lay down. This caused a severe hump in his back/spine. At just 9 months old, he had gone through an indescribable amount of pain. Yet he was still the happiest guy,” she said.

She said mentally, his situation didn’t limit him. Physically, his condition only worsened. As he used his legs as a crutch, they began to bend more and more backward.

“To the point that if any other dog were to try to play and jump on his back or anyone were to put any weight on his back for any reason, his legs would likely break.

His spine continued to bend and arthritis continued to worsen. After speaking with different vets, the determination was made that double amputation would give him the best quality of life. Because of the severity of the damage, vets removed one leg at a time. His surgeries went well, though after the second surgery, Blu ended up hospitalized due to a staph infection. He spent some time away from us, stealing the hearts of the vet staff. Finally, Blu was able to come home,” said Stinson.

As Blu was already used to relying on his front legs solely to get around, he adjusted quickly. Blu’s back arch is now gone, Stinson said. Now that he can lay down flat without his legs curled under him, his spine can relax and stretch out as it should, she said. He can now play with other dogs.

Though he does have wheels for hikes and walks, he gets around well on his front legs.

Wallet, personal items stolen at gas station store

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — At 9:45 p.m. March 12, officers were dispatched to Murphy USA on 23 Mile Road near the Van Dyke Freeway for a larceny report. The caller stated that his keychain, wallet, car keys, AirTag and AirPods case were stolen from the checkout area inside the store.

Officers arrived at the gas station and spoke to the caller, who stated that he placed his wallet and keychain on the counter when checking out. He stated that, after he paid, he forgot to retrieve his wallet and keychain. He went outside and then came back inside the store about five minutes later after pumping gas. At that point, his items were missing.

Some of his missing items were later located near the roadway and were damaged, as they appeared to have been thrown from a moving car. The detective bureau was investigating.

Resident reports identity fraud

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — A resident came into the Police Department to file an identity theft complaint at 11:30 a.m.

March 10. She stated that, on March 9, she received a letter from the U.S. Small Business Administration stating that her loan amount of $492 is past due. It was later determined that someone had taken out a loan in her name without her permission using her Social Security number.

Store reports check fraud

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — At 2:30 p.m. March 11, officers were dispatched to a business in the 13000 block of Hall Road for a fraud complaint. Upon arrival at the business, employees stated that a woman came into the store and bought two pieces of merchandise. The woman paid with two separate checks.

A few hours later, the woman called the store and asked if she could return the merchandise for cash. Employees told the woman that they could not return the merchandise until the checks cleared the bank.

The woman then hung up the phone on the employees. Employees then retrieved and looked over the checks, and upon closer inspection, the bank account and routing numbers on the checks were altered. The checks were determined to be fake.

Police were investigating and attempting to locate the woman who paid with the fraudulent checks.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — A woman came into the Police Department to file a larceny report at 4:47 p.m. March 15. She stated that she was supposed to receive a gift card in the mail from her bank as part of a promotion. After not receiving the gift card, the woman called the bank, which informed her that the gift card had been mailed to her house back in December.

The bank then looked into the history of the gift card and determined that someone had already used it on two separate occasions. The resident believes that someone stole the gift card from her mail. The detective bureau was investigating.

Many items stolen from garage

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — At 6 a.m.

March 18, officers were dispatched to the 8000 block of Russell Street, near 21 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue, for a larceny report. Upon arrival, officers spoke to the caller, who stated that he went to his detached garage and noticed multiple items missing.

Several tools, batteries and two minibikes had been stolen from the garage. There was damage done to the garage door where it is believed that the suspect entered. The detective bureau was investigating.

Customers caught stealing from store found with needles and drugs

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Officers were dispatched to the Circle K gas station, 8069 22 Mile Road, for a retail fraud complaint at 1:37 a.m. March 19. A male suspect and female suspect were seen in the store concealing merchandise. Officers arrived shortly after and detained both suspects.

The male had a warrant out of another jurisdiction, and the female was currently on probation. A search of the female’s backpack discovered needles and a vial of lorazepam, a sedative, which she reportedly stated she stole from a local urgent care office. She was arrested and transported to the station for processing.

Jeep crashes into business, flees

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — At 11:25 a.m. March 17, officers were dispatched to a business in the 51000 block of Van Dyke Avenue for a malicious destruction of property report. When the owner came to work, he discovered the front door of the business damaged. A review of security footage showed a white Jeep run into the building.

Driver admits to drinking 2 shots SHELBY TOWNSHIP — An officer on patrol in the area of 23 Mile and Schoenherr roads observed a vehicle facing south in the northbound lanes of Schoenherr at 2:26 a.m. March 17. The officer then initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle.

A strong smell of intoxicants was coming from the vehicle when the officer approached. The driver admitted to drinking two shots of Captain Morgan rum about 30 minutes prior to driving. The driver then exited her vehicle to perform field sobriety tests. After completing the field sobriety tests, the driver was offered a preliminary breath test. The driver agreed and the results were 0.317% blood alcohol content. The driver was then placed under arrest for oper-

Two suspects arrested for allegedly taking items off trucks

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — At 1:22 a.m. March 17, an officer on patrol noticed a pickup truck running and backed into a parking spot with its lights off in a parking lot of a business in the 14100 block of Industrial Center Drive, near 23 Mile and Schoenherr roads.

When the officer drove closer, the driver turned the truck’s lights on and left the parking lot at a high rate of speed. The officer was able to catch up to the truck and initiate a traffic stop at 23 Mile and Wing Drive. As the officer was speaking to the driver, the officer observed several radiators from semi-trucks in the bed of the pickup.

Also, several pieces of copper, license plates and tools were observed inside the truck.

The two occupants of the truck were both arrested for felony larceny.

WE’RE GARDENING FOR NATURE.’ METRO DETROIT — Each year, Michiganders eagerly wait for Old Man Winter to take his final breath and allow Mother Nature to usher in spring with new life. For those who have been shut inside all winter, spring brings much-needed fresh air and allows for reconnecting with nature.

Local libraries encourage the public to get their hands dirty and start a garden this season by offering seed libraries.

There are currently 130 active seed libraries in Michigan and around 600 nationwide, according to Bevin Cohen, who created the Michigan Seed Library Network as a connection tool to promote and develop seed libraries.

Cohen is a Michigan-based author specializing in herbalism, seed saving and sustainability practices through the homestead project he and his wife own, called Small House Farm in Sanford.

Though each seed library differs slightly from the next, the general model allows library-goers to “check out” seed packets of different plant varieties such as vegetables, fruits, herbs, flowers and even Michigan native plants, which attract vital pollinators like bees and butterflies.

Typically, libraries limit how many seed packets can be checked out at a time and encourage seed saving so that they can replenish their supply.

Professional seed saver Cohen explains that the process isn’t as complicated as it may seem.

“It’s pretty simple. The first detail is learning how to identify when the seeds are ready to be harvested, which varies from one crop to the next,” Cohen said.

Cohen said that knowing where the seeds are and when they’ll be ready is crucial in seed saving.

“With things that (are) easy to grow, like beans and peas, we’re harvesting the seeds themselves, so those are really easy to identify. Plants like tomatoes and peppers will change from green to red, signifying their ripeness. Therefore, the seeds are ready to go. With some things that we grow and eat, we are already saving the seeds without realizing it, like when you extract the seeds from a melon before eating it.”

According to Cohen, seeds don’t have a strict expiration date; as long as they are stored in a cool, dark location, they can re-

main viable for many years. If stored in an airtight container in a freezer, they might be able to last for decades at a time. Cohen does specify that there is an exception to this rule: Seeds for parsnips, spinach and most onion varieties tend to lose their viability after the first year.

Every year, the Michigan Seed Library Network showcases a different seed with Michigan roots through their “One Seed, One State” initiative.

One Seed, One State unites seed libraries across the state under one common goal to grow the same plant. This year’s seed is Grand Rapids lettuce, which is described as an easy-to-grow frilly, non-bitter leaf lettuce that can be eaten as early as 28 days after planting. The “father of forced lettuce,” Eugene Davis, developed Grand Rapids lettuce in the late 1800s. Since this variety of lettuce is known to be cold hardy, it is credited with establishing the greenhouse winter lettuce industry in Grand Rapids, which supplied the Great Lakes region with lettuce for decades.

The Michigan Seed Library Network served over 200 seed libraries with One Seed, One State kits in 2023, and Cohen estimates that nearly 900 individuals attended the seventh annual Central Michigan Seed Swap, an event inviting people to “Swap, share and share!” It was held Feb. 25.

Lisa Martin, the branch librarian at the Warren Civic Center Library, is excited to announce the arrival of seed libraries at all four Warren libraries this April and that they will be participating in this year’s One Seed, One State project. Currently, the Civic and the Burnette Branch libraries are collecting seed donations of leftover seed packets (unopened or partial packets) to start their seed library. All donations must be labeled and placed in sealed bags, packets or envelopes. If you write your name on your donations, you’ll be entered in a drawing this fall for a gift card. Additionally, Cohen will be hosting a “Seed Saving 101” workshop at the Civic Center Library 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 6.

Martin said that much of the inspiration for Warren’s seed libraries came from the Ferndale Area District Library’s impressive seed library model. Adult services librarians Sarah Bowman and Michelle Williamson have been running the seed library in Ferndale for three years now. Crocker House Museum to host fundraiser luncheon

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — The Macomb County Historical Society and the Crocker House Museum will be hosting their biggest fundraiser of the year — the Yvonne Leslie Pottery Luncheon — from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 15 at Shelby Gardens Banquets & Events, 50265 Van Dyke Ave. in Shelby Township.

The Yvonne Leslie Pottery Luncheon is a table scaping competition where volunteer table-setters design place settings, centerpieces and other decorations based around a theme.

This year’s theme is “Tables Across America.”

Attendees can vote on the table scapes, eat a buffet lunch and enter raffles to win prize baskets and grand prizes. Proceeds from the event will support the Macomb County Historical Society and its Crocker House Museum.

The Pottery Luncheon began in 1999, when its original sponsors, the Mah-Nah-Be-Zee Questers, raised money for an antique bridal basket still on display in the Crocker House dining room. In 2002, the event was renamed in memory of Yvonne Leslie, a longtime Questers and Crocker House supporter. The Crocker House Museum received ownership of the event in 2020, and despite delays and a smaller scale due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2022 luncheon raised more than $4,000 for the museum.

Katie Annett, the museum director and co-chair of this year’s pottery luncheon committee, said in a phone interview that the money raised will help support their mission.

The society and the museum are hoping for 240-300 attendees this year.

The Macomb County Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Its Crocker House Museum showcases the Victorian Bath City era, as well as other areas of local history. The museum is located near downtown Mount Clemens in an 1869 Italianate house that was once home to Mount Clemens’ first two mayors.

Annett said the museum invites people to check out the museum; she just asks that they call and make an appointment to ensure that somebody is there and ready to take care of any questions. Special events can be found on the museum’s website.

She said people should come check out the table decorations that people are designing for the competition.

“When you walk through the doors the tables are going to draw your attention. The tables have these wild center pieces and really elaborate place settings. It’s really neat to go through and look at how creatively everybody decorated their tables, and in the competition, you can vote for your favorite.

Keep homes safe from spring flooding METRO DETROIT — April showers may bring May flowers, but they can also bring severe issues for homeowners.

Spring weather is often very wet, both from snow melting and from an increase in rainfall. These wet conditions mean there are several issues that can crop up for homeowners “The biggest problems come from big snow melts or rains that cause backups. Basement flooding is a huge problem around this time of year,” said Frank Winters, the owner of Birmingham Plumbing. “Tree roots can also grow into your sewer line, particularly in old houses that have clay pipes. They can even grow into broken PVC pipes and clog the drain.”

“The biggest risks around this time of year include damage to finished basements,” added Rich Piccirilli, the chief operating officer of the Foundation Authority in Clinton Township. “Any kind of flooding is bad. That can destroy possessions, damage the foundation or lead to mold, among other things. You need to pay attention to your home.”

Piccirilli said that homeowners should take this time of year to do a check of their home’s condition as they do their spring cleaning.

“This is the best time of the year to do an exam of their home,” he explained. “Most people in the next 30 days are often outside and doing spring cleaning, so they often notice things. Just look for things; cracks in the brick, windows not closing or opening properly, walls starting to buckle. The soil can expand from the water and affect your home. … You can smell and see mildew. I would always recommend calling a professional to check it out if you see something. It’s better to be safe.”

There are steps homeowners can take to try to avoid such problems. It can be very important to clean a house’s gutters and ensure the downspouts pour the gutters’ water away from the home properly.

“Make sure your downspouts are hooked up and have proper grading away from the house,” said Piccirilli. “Downspouts are important. Make sure gutters are clean and extended away from the house. If it’s pointed away but the grade

pours it back toward the house, it still pools around the structure. You want that water away from the house.”

Winters said that making sure the home has a working sump pump and backups that are designed to mitigate or prevent flooding is something homeowners should be doing at least once a year.

“Usually people start identifying problems when water starts showing up,” he said. “Preemptively, you could look for cracks in your basement walls. Make sure your gutters outside aren’t dumping next to the house. Make sure the sump pump and backups are working so they don’t stick when you need them. The backup might not be used for years, so you want to run it periodically to keep it fresh. You might want to make sure your storm trap is clear and inspected.”

Piccirilli advised homeowners to look out for mold but to be very cautious when dealing with it, as some forms can be hazardous to a person’s health.

“In the case of mold or mildew, you can get some household products to clean some light mildew,” he said. “That white effervescence … you can clean that or have a company like ours take care of it. For full-blown black mold, you need to consult a professional company that knows how to deal with that. It can be dangerous.”

Perhaps most importantly, making sure a home has the proper insurance coverage in the event of flooding could save families thousands of dollars in the event of a severe problem caused by spring weather.

“We had a guy who walked in with a basement that was flooded with 3 feet of water and didn’t have insurance,” said Winters. “You always want to make sure you get that insured.

We had to replace the sump pump and furnace. He lost pretty much everything he had in that basement.”

Piccirilli said that a little prevention can go a long way.

For every $1 invested in disaster mitigation, $6 can be saved in damages and repairs.

“A lot of people are almost scared when they see a crack and are afraid it will be a $20,000 repair,” he said. “Often, it’s not — it’s just a $500 repair. If you can spot these issues soon, it can cost you a lot less money.”

initiated the founding of the seed library just a year or so prior to her involvement and still plays an active role in educating library-goers on sustainable garden practices.

The Ferndale Garden Club and Cheryl English from Black Cat Pottery will host “It’s Easy To Be Green,” which will help attendees with educational tools and practices to promote environmental sustainability within their gardens, at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 16.

Ferndale’s seed library is host to a wide array of seed offerings, including Michigan native plants like milkweed varieties that draw in pollinators, which are donated by their partner, the Ferndale Monarch Project.

“I think people think weeds and assume the plants are ugly,” Bowman said. “And they aren’t going to be cut flowers like you see from a florist. They’re sustainable, drought tolerant, deer tolerant and pollinator friendly.

They aren’t necessarily going to be a neat little row of flowers. It’s more of a wild vibe.”

Amber Quesenberry, a homeschool mom of four and board member of the Rochester Pollinators, planted her first pollinator garden in 2020 from a plan in the Rochester Pollinators brochure. Since then, the Quesenberrys have planted over 1,100 plants in their front yard, which they’ve neatly curated to display that native plant gardens can still be manicured. With help from Mulberry Hill Wildlife, Quesenberry worked to redesign her yard to target different species. Now her yard is home to a birdfriendly garden, a bumblebee garden and a butterfly garden.

Quesenberry contacted Marilyn Trent, the founder of the Rochester Pollinators, a few years back when her children became fascinated by pollinator conservation. Trent is an entrepreneur with a passion for ecology and wildlife preservation. Trent started the Rochester Pollinators in 2019 with the intention of educating and providing resources to preserve the Monarch butterfly and pol-

The Rochester Pollinators work to spread awareness and engage local communities in planting Michigan native plants in public and privately owned landscapes.

Some of their outreaches include their annual native plant sale, where they sell a variety of native plants that can be selected by light, soil and moisture needs. Orders can be placed online at https://rochesterpollinators. org and picked up on May 20 or 27 at the Downtown Rochester Farmers Market.

The Rochester Pollinators have a seed library at Dinosaur Hill Nature Preserve for those wishing to start from seeds. They offer native seeds such as purple coneflower, black-eyed Susans and milkweed varieties.

Contrary to common belief, wild plants can be grown in deep containers for those with limited yard space; the Rochester Pollinators provide more information on how to do this successfully under their “Resources” section.

Quesenberry has donated many of the seeds she’s saved from her own gardens.

“We shouldn’t have to convince people

that these are gorgeous plants to put in your yard. Some of them have the most beautifully intricate blooms and stunning leaf patterns.

Because we live here, we should be seeing these native plants everywhere. Yet, you can’t really find them at garden centers.”

She advises new gardeners to throw out everything they’ve learned about gardening and not to take themselves too seriously, as gardening is a fun experiment of trial and error.

“It’s all about changing what we think is beautiful and recognizing that our Michigan natives are just as beautiful as the other nursery plants and give back so much more to your garden landscape,” Quesenberry said. “I had to get really excited about finding holes in leaves because these plants are meant to be eaten. It’s a shift in what we thought gardening was. We’re not gardening for ourselves anymore. We’re gardening for nature.”

UTICA — The city of Utica recently purchased a 2016 Ferrara quint firetruck with funds from the $2.5 million Michigan Enhancement Grant that it received.

Utica bought the firetruck, which the city said has 8,000 miles on it and is in excellent condition, from the fire department in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania, for $610,000.

Utica now will retire a ladder truck that is more than 30 years old.

Utica Fire Chief Kevin Wilseck and Capt. Bryan Orlowski went to Pennsylvania to get the vehicle and then drove it back to Utica.
