MSU researchers work to keep Michigan hops healthy BY ALYSSA OCHSS & DEAN VAGLIA

METRO DETROIT — Michigan farms may be known for crops like cherries and corn, but in recent years, a new homegrown crop has taken the state by storm — the humble, hearty hop. Originally brought to Michigan over 100 years ago during a homesteading boom, the past 20 years have seen a rise in Michigan hops production. And while Michiganders have been able to reap the rewards of this rise, thanks to breweries macro and micro, things have not gone down entirely smoothly at the hops farms. Michigan hops are uniquely vulnerable to diseases, a problem caused by the high-moisture environment anyone from the Great Lakes State is well aware of. “A lot of our cultivars that are currently available at commercial levels were bred and developed for growers in other parts of the world where they don’t receive as much rain,” said Erin Lizotte, Integrated Pest Management coordinator and senior statewide educator with the Michigan State University Extension. “We’re kind of fighting an uphill battle because we have much wetter weather here in Michigan, so we need our breeding program to develop cultivars that are more at home in those wetter environments and more disease resistant to those diseases we see in wetter environments.” This moisture vulnerability has opened the door for a variety of infections to take hold of the state’s hops crops, See HOPS on page 6A

Insect control: A homeowner’s guide to surviving the spring season BY JONATHAN SZCZEPANIAK jszczepaniak@candgnews.com

METRO DETROIT — The spring season is a safe haven for Michiganders. It’s not only a prequel to the beautiful summer months, but it’s also a season people tend to look forward to as soon as the rainfall and cold fronts of September come around. But as warmer weather approaches, the spring season showcases one problem most homeowners find themselves having to tend to. “With the warm weather last week, people are seeing a lot of wasps and different types of bees around the house, and spiders, pavement ants, the tiny sugar ants and carpenter ants are starting to emerge,” Michael Kharsa, who works for CJB Pest and Mosquito Control in Farmington Hills, said April 18. Kharsa has noticed an influx of calls as the season rolls around. Ants, bees and spiders tend to be the primary culprits during this time, especially with insects trying to find safety from the rainfall. Michael Mangino, owner of What’s Bugging You in St Clair Shores, has noticed this with his recent jobs. “With ants, they’re coming into houses a lot more,” Mangino said. “A lot of it is probably attributed to our high water table, I imagine. They’re going into houses and finding paradise there.” The insects’ ability to make their way into residences is a reminder to have your house sprayed on a consistent basis throughout the year. CJB Pest and Mosquito Control offers a tri-seasonal package for spring, summer and just before the winter months to treat any issues that homeowners might face. Kharsa said CJB focuses on not only eliminating the threat but also on preventing insects from making their way into the house. “When we come out, we’re going to treat around your interior and exterior part of your walls to force the insects from the structure, and we’re going to put a perimeter service around the exterior to prevent the insects from coming in,” Kharsa said. “Basically, we’re providing a barrier and forcing the ones from the walls outside.” Pest control doesn’t stop with treating an insect problem; it can also provide a home inspection, to some extent. While CJB and What’s Bugging You, and many other pest control companies, offer spraying services, a technician will also walk a residence with a homeowner and discuss areas that might not only

be hot spots for insects but also should be treated to prevent future home issues. Mangino said the inspection is a vital part to the service he provides. “Of course, walking with people around their house and pointing out things that could be beneficial, like caulking some areas, pitching the water away from the homes is a big thing, and trimming back foliage away from the house,” Mangino said. “Those are all things that contribute to keeping the longevity of the home, as well as keeping pests away.” For those who are motivated to do it themselves, safety is the primary concern when dealing with pest control products. It’s plausible for minor problems, but consistent issues should be treated by professionals, especially if the homeowner has pets or small children. “The right way to go about it is to read and understand the label 100%,” Mangino said. “The label is the law in our industry, and that’s for good reason because you can get hurt. You can hurt somebody else, and some of these products that people are able to buy online are traditionally for professionals only. There are some great products available that the public can seek out and find, but a lot of them tend to go away in our industry because homeowners misuse them.” As the spring season approaches, active insects should be an important reminder to keep up on pest control treatment throughout the year. The rain and warmth in spring calls for treatment due to the insects becoming active, but an important time frame to keep an eye on is before October. To keep the insects from getting “weathered in,” when they get inside the walls due to the cold temperatures, a service spray before winter is needed. But like most services, the best way to resolve the problem is to keep up with it regularly. “As far as spider treatments and general pest control, that’s more of an exterior spray. If people want it to remain as general pest free as possible, typically spring, summer and fall treatments,” Mangino said. “If they wanted any sort of treatment on the inside, what I would recommend, at the very most, would be early spring with light treatment on the inside with cracks and crevices.” Call Staff Writer Jonathan Szczepaniak at (586) 498-1090.

ST. CLAIR SHORES — On April 17, the St. Clair Shores City Council approved the Community Development Block Grant budget plan from the Planning Commission in a vote of 4-2. Councilmembers John Caron and Candice Rusie opposed it. Mayor Kip Walby was excused, and Mayor Pro Tem Chris Vitale conducted the meeting. The CDBG budget was given $879,172 this year, according to the Planning Commission minutes. This is an $8,107 decrease from the previous year. This program allows funding for community development. Some of the organizations and charities funded under the city’s grants include the St. Clair Shores Senior Center, Gilda’s Club and the Homeowner Rehabilitation Program. Organizations can put in a request for an amount of money they want to receive, either by attending the public hearing in person or by submitting a written request, according to Liz Koto, the city planner for St. Clair Shores. “You do not have to be present at the public hearing in order to be considered for funding,” Koto said. “We all recognize and understand that there could be extenuating circumstances that wouldn’t allow somebody to be able to be present at a public hearing.” Two separate budgets were brought forward: one set up by Koto and one set up by the Planning Commission. Koto said each organization requested a certain amount of money and the city would not be able to give them what they wanted because it exceeds what they are allowed to fund. First-time organizations are allocated $1,000 to get a feel for the rules and regulations for the next year, when they will be allocated more money. Koto said she made a plan for the remainder of the organizations where all of them are

the two most pressing being downy mildew and halo blight. “Downy mildew has been around since the beginning,” Lizotte said. “I’d say that’s the disease we have spent the most resources and time on tackling, and I think we’ve gotten to a point where growers are able to manage downy mildew effectively on-farm.” Downy mildew shows up as a fuzzy spore mass on leaves, turning the undersides black. It has proven very resistant to winter conditions, so early-season pruning has proven to be the most effective way of preventing its spread. MSU research has also allowed farmers to begin using plants more resistant to downy mildew infections. While downy mildew is an old problem for hops growers, halo blight is the new troublesome fungus on the scene. MSU researcher Timothy Miles was the first to take notice of the disease in 2018. It shows up as black splotches on leaves and kills hops flowers in a way that leaves only parts close to the stem untouched — a green halo atop a pale infected cone. “Since (2018), his lab and crew have been sussing out what (halo blight’s) life cycle looks like, as well as how we can potentially control it in hopyards,” Lizotte said. While the search for the secret to stopping halo blight is ongoing, MSU researchers have made strides in combating hops-affecting viruses. Carolyn Malmstrom’s work in the field led to her developing hops virus testing protocols, allowing growers to send samples to MSU for testing and diagnosis. As it stands, the surefire way of fighting disease on hops is by preventing it from taking hold. Farms, nurseries and other growers can keep plants and seeds sanitized, infected leaves and flowers can be pruned away and disposed of, and fungicides can be applied to plants to kill whatever lingering disease remains. But Lizotte said the goal of MSU’s scientists is to have plants become naturally immune to common diseases. “I don’t want to call it a Band-Aid, what we’re doing now in terms of fungicides and cultural management practices, but we’re also really hopeful that, down the road, we can start to transition to cultivars that are just more at home and happy growing in Michigan,” Lizotte said. ar enthusiasts who have an affection for vintage vehicles might want to race over to Stahls Automotive Collection. The museum is the creation of businessman Ted Stahl, who — during his childhood — developed an interest in automobiles and who — as an adult — began collecting antique cars. The car buff, whose grandfather once owned a garage, wanted to share his passion with others, so in 2006, he opened Stahls Automotive Collection in St. Clair Shores. Five years later, the museum relocated to Chesterfield Township to accommodate the growing collection. “He’s always been drawn to mechanical things and loves the artistry and engineering behind these historical vehicles,” General Manager Terri Coppens said via email. “He wants to keep the history alive.” The Stahls Automotive Foundation is a nonprofit organization designed to preserve, restore and exhibit specific vintage vehicles of the 20th Century. Stahls Automotive Collection is open from 1 to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the first Saturday of the month. There is no cost to visit, but donations are welcome. Visitors can tour the exhibit at their own pace. Staff members keep everything running smoothly, and there’s a group of volunteer docents who share interesting details about the vehicles. Every piece inside Stahls Automotive Collection tells a story: the one-ofa-kind cars, roadside memorabilia, historic gasoline pumps and shiny chrome. According to Administrative Assistant Chloe Gieraga, there are approximately 220 cars in the collection, but not all are on the floor at the same time. “Ted is constantly buying more, so the number changes,” Gieraga said. “We do swap the cars, and some are in storage, so when people come back, they are sure to see some new ones.” Sometimes, too, the prized possessions are lent out to different car shows. “Most of the cars do come from auctions, but some come from classic car dealers or even private sellers. Some have been purchased from overseas, but the majority have been in the U.S.,” Coppens said. “For the most part, we look for things that will tell the story of automotive history. Also things that will bring joy to others.” The temperature and humidity inside the museum are controlled to keep the cars in mint condition. “Our staff and volunteers do a great job taking care of the cars and making sure they look pristine,” Coppens said. Early in the tour, visitors view a 1904 Oldsmobile Model 6C CurvedDash Runabout and a 1910 Buick Model F Touring right next to it. In an-

Computer fraud reported

At 5:30 p.m. on April 13, a fraud report was made after an incident the same day in the 21000 block of Bon Brae Street. Upon arrival, an officer spoke with the victims, a 75-year-old man and a 72-yearold woman, who said she was on the computer when a pop-up window appeared. The message said the computer was infected and to call the number on the screen. The woman reportedly called the number and provided bank information and Social Security numbers for both herself and her husband. She was then allegedly told not to tell the bank or police about it. When the woman and man went to the bank, they were informed it was a scam and were able to change their banking information before any money was taken. An officer advised both parties to check their credit report and make a police report if anything suspicious occurs.

Vehicle break-in reported on Little Mack

At 5:11 a.m. on April 15, a report was made about a vehicle theft that happened on the same day in the 24000 block of Little Mack Avenue. Officers were dispatched to the location where three suspects in face masks and a burgundy vehicle were reportedly trying to break into other vehicles. They pulled into the parking lot of the location where they observed another vehicle with its rear brake lights activated. There were no other vehicles in the parking lot. The officers pulled up to the passenger side of the vehicle and saw the

window shattered. One officer exited the police vehicle to look around and saw no one in the vehicle. They called other officers and continued searching the lot. Another officer arrived and tried to make contact with the owner. One officer saw a large landscaping block on the floorboard and interior damage. The vehicle’s owner, a 61-year-old woman, said the last time she saw her vehicle was at 7 p.m. the night before and it was left locked.

Larceny reported on Gordon Road

At 9:19 p.m. on April 15, a larceny report was made after an incident on the same day in the 21000 block of Gordon Road. An officer met with the victim, a 44-year-old man, who said he went on vacation and arrived home to find his vehicle’s door slightly ajar. On further investigation, the victim found that his Sam’s Club Mastercard and a brand-new pair of Apple Airpods, still in the box, were missing. He immediately checked the credit card and saw that it was charged three times at a gas station and once at a party shop. When he noticed the charges, he immediately canceled the credit card. A video of the incident from approximately 4:32 a.m. was shown to the officer. Suspects were reportedly seen opening the car door of the vehicle and running down the street to a vehicle that appeared to be maroon in color. The video also shows the lights on in his neighbor’s truck. The neighbor reportedly also wanted to make a report.

An MSP trooper found the vehicle unoccupied and abandoned near the southbound lanes of Interstate 75 and the Davison Freeway. The trooper said the vehicle suffered heavy steering column and rear damage. The vehicle was then impounded. An officer investigated the area where the vehicle was parked but nothing was found. The victim was provided a St. Clair Shores Police Department incident number, MSP incident information and recovery information for the vehicle. — Alyssa Ochss

tween April 15 and April 16 in the 20000 block of Beaconsfield Avenue. Two officers were dispatched and were advised that Michigan State Police were out with a vehicle that appeared to have been freshly stolen and abandoned. Upon arrival at the stated location, an officer spoke to the victim, a 36-year-old woman, who said she took her vehicle to the store on April 15 and returned home. She reportedly parked her vehicle on the east side of Beaconsfield and said she believed she locked her car. She said she went to bed around 8 p.m. and did not notice whether the vehicle was there or not.

ing boats, it wasn’t getting much use in the summer. “It’s such a beautiful space that I, you know, with my art background, this would be a great space to host art shows and events of that nature,” Carstarphen said. Carstarphen said Gemayel was an employee for her in Chicago at one of her restaurants near Wrigley Field. She said after his tours of duty in Iraq, he became really interested in helping other veterans. She said she posted about using the space at Trader Todd’s Marina on social media to see if anyone was interested and that Gemayel contacted her. “He immediately contacted me and said I have this idea to put together a veterans show,” Carstarphen said. “And it really resonated with me. My father was a veteran of the Air Force (and) worked for the Veterans Administration his entire career.” There are a couple different events this year, which is different from previous years. The reason behind that, Gemayel said, was to gain more exposure. “When you pitch an art gallery to people, most people may not show up because they’re not interested in just seeing art,” Gemayel said.

“So, to kind of gain exposure, we decided to throw in different events in there to get people out here.” The veteran art gallery is not limited to a specific subject or medium, Gemayel said. “We don’t want to alienate any artists that want to display their(s) because not all of them are going to be thinking about the same thing,” Gemayel said. “That’s what makes this gallery unique. It displays, like I said, different artists and their different styles of work, their different genres.” Gemayel said some of the veterans use things such as art as a form of therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder. “It’s not just going to the VA and popping pills, it’s different methods of therapy,” Gemayel said. “And some veterans, especially ones that are not, don’t think of them being artists, or don’t like doing art, that might be the therapy that they need to move on with life and get better.” The comedians at the comedy night are veterans local to Michigan, Gemayel said, and some of them use comedy as a form of PTSD therapy as well. One of the veterans is a double amputee, losing both legs overseas, and uses comedy as therapy. These are not veterans-only events, Gemayel said. They are open to the public so they can see what goes on in the veteran community.

Some of the events require registration, and it can be found by going to their Facebook page, clicking on events and following the link listed. The Military Formal and the close out event are not ticketed, but donations are appreciated. The Gallery Opener on May 19 includes the showing of the private documentary “Saving 22.” The documentary is about veteran suicide and the struggles veterans go through every day dealing with suicidal thoughts. “Twenty-two veterans die at their own hand every day in America,” the “Saving 22” website indicates. “Current statistics are 27.5 per day. The incidence of PTSD, depression and anxiety is at an all-time high.” Gemayel said the target audience for this documentary is health care professionals, especially those who work with veterans. The idea is to give them better insight about how to help their clients when they come in, Gemayel said. “We see a lot of things with the VA where the psychologists rotate so they’re not there long-term,” Gemayel said. “Or a lot of them are not in the military or don’t have family in the military so they don’t have that experience. So, the treatment that is being treated is more of a civilian-based treatment than a military-based treatment.” He went on to say that there is PTSD in civilian patients, but it’s different than the

Gemayel said Project Brotherhood Resolve is always looking for donors, sponsors and other help in their mission to help veterans in life. He said to contact them if anyone knows of any veterans that could use their support. He can be reached at (773) 456-4716. Trader Todd’s Marina is located at 24030 E. Jefferson Avenue.

knocked down by a percentage. “For the remainder of the public service organizations that we have funded in the past, we then knock them down all by an equal percentage so that everyone gets sort of knocked down equally, and that is the budget I recommended to the Planning Commission,” Koto said. The changes the Planning Commission made were to reduce the amount of funding for Care House and to give an extra $2,000 to the Hockey Enablement Fund. The second recommendation was to reduce the amount Gilda’s Club received and give an additional $2,000 to the McWarm warming center. Councilwoman Candice Rusie disagreed with the Planning Commission in reducing the amount Care House gets, stating that they need that money for the services they provide. “I really don’t want to reduce the amount we give to the organization that does forensic interviews of molested children for St. Clair Shores … to give a sports association more,” Rusie said. Rusie said that, every year, it is difficult choosing which organizations get the funding. “That’s the hard thing every single year. This is really difficult,” Rusie said. “I mean, it’s not always difficult. It’s really good when we have exactly the amount to give that we have to meet all the requests (that) were made, and unfortunately, this year we can’t do that because we are not getting as much money as we usually get from the federal government.” Councilman Dave Rubello said he felt the same way as Rusie in this respect. “To make these types of choices…there’s (a) need for all of this stuff, that’s for sure, in (this) type of world,” Rubello said. “I mean, we have a lot of good in our world, too, but there (is) some awful stuff that goes on.” Councilman John Caron said the formula Koto made was a good way to go. “Just having a kind of a straightforward formula base for here’s how we’re going to do it is definitely a fair way to go,” Caron said. Rusie made a motion to accept Koto’s recommendation as planned. Councilman Ronald Frederick wanted to keep the Planning Commission’s plan, stating See CDBG on page 15A

for its 51st annual “Reflections on Ice” ice show, which will focus on “Bedtime Stories” this year following their “Night at the Museum” show in 2022. While showcasing bedtime favorites for the little ones, the show will also present some teen-based stories as well. St. Clair Shores Figure Skating Club Director Claire LaDue said she likes to create outof-the-box ice shows when thinking of a theme. “I try to be a little bit more unique,” LaDue said. “I try not to do cookie-cutter stories that everybody does. I guess it’s just something I’ve had on my mind to do for a few years. I have a list I want to get to, and this one was next up on my list.” With over 100 figure skaters from the metro Detroit area, including St. Clair Shores Figure Skating Club alumni, ranging in ages from 3-60, it truly is a wonderful communitydriven event to be a part of. The skating routines will include duets, group numbers and solos from the club’s most accomplished regional and section-level skaters. Don’t be surprised to see the seven dwarfs from Snow White perform a synchronized skate or to hear music from 15 bedtime story favorites. It’s a sight to see, and it wouldn’t be a show without special appearances Friday and Saturday night from pewter medalists Emilea Zingas and Vadym Kolesnik, who finished fourth at the U.S. national championships as a duo in ice dance this year. A Grosse Pointe native and Grosse Pointe South graduate, Zingas has been a part of the St. Clair Shores Figure Skating Club since 2008 and has yet to miss an ice show since. Now competing professionally, Zingas said it’s an emotional feeling coming back for the ice show. “It’s a little bittersweet,” Zingas said. “I love going back to Shores. It was a home for me for so many years. I still represent the St. Clair Shores Figure Skating Club, which is something I’m really proud of, but it’s different for me this past year not being there every day 0337-2317

Council approves site plan for renovations to former Rose’s Diner

City Council approves rezoning and site plan for multifamily development ST. CLAIR SHORES — On April 17, the St. Clair Shores City Council approved the rezoning and site plan for a two-building, eight-unit multifamily complex represented by Joseph Paluzzi, of MHB Companies. They are also the developers of what is known as Heritage Condominiums. Mayor Kip Walby was excused from the meeting, and Mayor Pro Tem Chris Vitale conducted the session. The space was originally zoned for a residential multifamily complex space, RM-1, and was later rezoned as office space. The rezoning request for the office space rezoning was also requested by MHB Companies. Paluzzi said at the meeting that the plan was to use it for office space before the pandemic, but because of the shift in working trends due to the pandemic, it was not useful as office space anymore. “Unfortunately, as we all know, the pandemic occurred and the desire for office space is unfortunately just not there,” Paluzzi said. “So, we were very successful with the condominium project, and we thought it would be in the interest of all the parties to come before you again and request that the zoning be reverted back to RM-1.”

ST. CLAIR SHORES — The St. Clair Shores City Council also approved a site plan for renovations to the former Rose’s Diner on April 17. Plans for a retail center were presented by Verus Development. Joseph Paluzzi, representing Verus Development, said the site was originally approved for a Popeye’s restaurant and that he doesn’t know the details about why they decided not to build it. He said he got a call about the vacant building and secured the site. Paluzzi said he plans to have multiple tenants in the building, including a national tenant as well as local tenants. Councilwoman Candice Rusie said she is happy the building was secured with a developer so quickly and is excited for the new plans. “Thanks for choosing St. Clair Shores again and for taking over that space,” Rusie said. “When Popeye’s pulled, I was concerned we’d have a vacant property for longer than we currently have had it. So, I was really happy to hear we had another company right away wanting to develop it.”

As for Coppens, her favorite car is the 1931 Cord LeGrande Speedster. “Most people know it because it has a bar in the door,” she said. Currently, the museum only has a few muscle cars, but plans are in the works to add more. “We are slowly trying to for the car buffs who like those cars,” Gieraga said. Staff is trying to add more kid-friendly interactive activities. One example was the Halloween Trunk-Or-Treat last fall. The building also has a room dedicated to vintage organs — another of Stahls first loves — that play music periodically throughout the day.

‘It was fit for a king.’

Other treasures that really attract visitors are the 1948 Tucker sedan and the 1963 Chrysler Turbine car. The Turbine was an experimental two-door hardtop coupe powered by a turbine engine that didn’t catch on in the industry. Docent Jack Haynes said just 51 Tuckers were made under automobile entrepreneur Preston Tucker and “only 47 survived.” It also gave the Big Three competition. “It was recognized as a good car. The car is very sturdy, like a tank,” Haynes said. “It’s a rear engine, very roomy, has shatterproof glass and independent four-wheel suspension. There are all kinds of safety features.” But one safety feature was left out: seatbelts. As Haynes explained, Tucker was told, “If you put in seatbelts, people are going to See STAHLS on page 19A

that Care House receives funding from other communities. This answer was provided by the representative for Care House when asked about other funding at the Planning Commission meeting the public hearing was held at. “I always want to err on the side of helping our programs that help the kids here in the Shores,” Frederick said. “And I know Care House does do stuff with kids in the Shores. They also have $120,000 coming from other communities that they spread around.” He also pointed out that the Hockey Enablement Fund doesn’t have any extra funding to turn to. “I don’t think hockey has other funding,” Frederick said. Frederick also said another reason he would like to see the Planning Commission’s plan come to fruition was to help McWarm, which he said was packed. He originally moved to amend Rusie’s motion to restore the four recommendations in the Planning Commission’s plan, but St. Clair Shores City Attorney Robert Ihrie said that would completely supplant the other motion. Rusie said she doesn’t want to create the appearance that money is being given to certain organizations because a member of the Planning Commission or City Council is involved in that organization. “Just do it fair,” Rusie said. “Do it fair and proportionally. I think it removes any sort of appearance of impropriety, a sort of concern that anything is happening that shouldn’t be happening.” The council did a roll call for Rusie’s original motion, to approve Koto’s plan, and the vote was 3-3, with Frederick, Councilman Peter Accica and Vitale opposed and Rusie, Rubello and Caron voting yes. When they did a roll call vote for Frederick’s motion, the Planning Commission’s plan, the result was 4-2, with Rubello switching his vote to approve the plan and Rusie and Caron voting no. Todd Parker, the head brewer at Rochester Mills Beer Co., said they go through Michigan hops providers when they can and that the state of Michigan has a good hop industry. “Definitely knowing your supplier is important,” Parker said. “A lot of the suppliers are good about keeping the diseased hops out of the system.” Jeremey Lewis, the brewer and co-owner of the Copper Hop Brewing Co. in St. Clair Shores, and co-owner Ryan Balicki said in emails that they couldn’t speak about the overall health of hops in the state. But Lewis said they use 45th Parallel as the distributor for their in-state hops — this includes Cascade, Centennial, Mittelfruh and Fuggle varieties — and that they’ve never had a problem. “I typically order what I need for the coming year in October after the harvest,” Lewis said in an email. “I have never had an issue with being able to get what I need. The quality has been outstanding and year to year very consistent.” Brian Tennis, owner and founder of Hop Alliance, said it was too early to tell how the crops for this year will do, but that last year was one of their best harvests yet because of good weather and other factors. He said their hops weren’t affected by diseases last year. “Fortunately, not for us,” Tennis said. “We’re up right up in the Leelanau (Peninsula), like right around the 45th Parallel, so we really haven’t seen a lot of the damages that some of the other farmers in the state have.” Lizotte says MSU researchers have been involved in studying hops since “day one” of the plant’s return to the Mitten State in the 2000s, planting the seeds for what has become a strong partnership between the growing industry and academia. “The partnership between the university and the industry is really critical to both of us,” Lizotte said. “We really take our lead from the industry on what their priority needs are. Without the industry of research at MSU, I don’t think we would have a hops industry in Michigan.”

Don Paulus stands in his workshop with painted toys he’s been working on.

stamp on the bottom of it with the name. He said the toys are made out of regular two-by-fours, two-by-sixes and two-byeights, and he gets the materials from house construction sites. “I go around wherever they’re building new houses and I say, ‘Hey, can I have your scrap wood,’ and 99% of the time they say, ‘Yeah, help yourself,’” Paulus said. “Because I show them what I do and they say, ‘Yeah, take it.’” He finds houses under construction by driving around. He said he never goes into the house. He just pulls out in front where they’re piling the scraps. He gives the scraps accumulated from the toys to others as kindling for fires. Paulus said he’s given to many places including Children’s Hospital of Michigan, Toys for Tots, Turning Point, Detroit Public Schools and others. At the hospital, Paulus said they used to call him the “summertime Santa” because he would bring toys during the summer, whereas other people would only bring toys around the winter holidays. “I would bring all my toys during the summer,” Paulus said. “And when it got to be Christmastime, I didn’t bring anything because everybody else brought stuff, and after Christmas, I bring my toys back again, so everybody got toys.”

Another place he’s given to is the restaurant that was known as Detroit’s Finest Coney Island. Waitresses give out the toys to kids eating at the restaurant to play with during their meal and they can take them home afterwards. “I’ve been donating toys to them for years,” Paulus said. “And the kids come with their parents and the waitresses give them a toy, and they walk out and the waitress says, ‘Wait a minute, you can take the toy home,’ and the kids don’t know that, but the kids just love the toys.” He said he keeps a bag filled with toys in his car in case the restaurant ever runs out. “I usually carry an extra bag of toys in the car, like 20 of them at a time, and when I walk in and they only got one left, I bring the bag in, so kids all get toys all the time,” Paulus said. The restaurant is changing over to a brunch spot, but Paulus said he will still be able to give them the toys. Thank-you letters from various places, including Toys for Tots and Turning Point, hang on the walls of his workshop. Thankyou letters from customers of the restaurant as well as others are clipped to a clipboard. But Paulus said he doesn’t do what he does for praise and acknowledgement. “I’m not looking for that, you know, but they do it and what can I say — I love it,” Paulus said. “If they’re happy, I’m happy, you know, and the kids are so happy.” Call Staff Writer Alyssa Ochss at (586) 498-1103.

think this is dangerous.” Another slice of nostalgia is the 1965 Kirkham AC Cobra, which docent Duane Sabella is knowledgeable about. One plus to volunteering at the museum is hearing the “very interesting stories” of people visiting the museum. Trey Brand is the museum’s historian and is always glad to share narratives about each car. “The higher-end cars were built custom for one person,” Brand said. The purple-blue 1919 “Fatty” Arbuckle Pierce-Arrow, for instance, is a standout and was custom-made for silent film actor Roscoe Conkling Arbuckle, best known as “Fatty.” “It was fit for a king,” Brand said. “Like a lot of wealthy people at the time, he had a driver.” The tires on the car are approximately 36 inches in size. “The wheels are original,” Brand said. “They’ve been restored but they haven’t been replaced.” The car stayed in top condition. “Because Roscoe lived in Los Angeles, he didn’t

have to deal with bad weather,” Brand said. Constructed from wood with techniques normally used for boats, the 1924 Delage GL Skiff Torpedo is another crown jewel. “Delage was a French luxury brand in the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s,” Brand said. “It’s essentially a boat. It has three layers of wood in a crisscross pattern. The outer layer is mahogany. Oak is stronger and cheaper, but mahogany looks better. It’s more rich and colorful.”

Get ready to cruise

The museum welcomes group tours for schools, Scouts, adult care centers and senior living facilities at no charge. The tours are available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Contact Gieraga at (586) 749-1078 or email chloe.gieraga@ stahlsauto.com. Beginning June 1, Stahls will begin holding its Cruise Nights every Thursday from 4 to 7:30 p.m. with the exception of the third Thursday of the month. On Cruise Night, the museum is open from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The Stahls Automotive Collection is located at 56516 North Bay Drive. For more information, visit www.stahlsauto.com or call (586) 749-1078.
