In a surprise announcement, Utica Community Schools named its Teacher of the Year during a schoolwide assembly to recognize students for meeting their March is Reading Month goals.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — A dance studio in downtown Utica had two dancers win two national dance categories April 6-9 at the Argentine Tango USA Official Championship & Festival in San Jose, California.

Amanda Accica, owner of Argentine Tango Detroit and one of the studio’s instructors, and Donato Juarez, an instructor at Argentine Tango Detroit, are now USA Champions of Argentine Tango and Milonga. They will be representing the USA in Argentina in August 2023.

“I am one from the lot who likes challenges,” Accica said in an email interview. “Competitions, ultimately, motivate us to do our best and compete at a higher level. I have danced and been a part of the Latin dance styles all of my life since my mother, Lori Burton, was also a dance instructor.

I have participated in various competitions, exhibitions and taught workshops while running our family dance studio Argentine Tango Detroit, (established) in 2000, located in Downtown Utica. I also have had the honor of winning USA Stage Tango in 2016 and Argentine Tango Vals in 2021, and now Argentine Tango De Pista (Social Tango) and Milonga of 2023,” she said.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — The Shelby Gardeners Club will be hosting a presentation on butterflies called “Attract Butterflies to Your Garden and Beneficial Insects” at the Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center, 4101 River Bends Drive, at 1 p.m. May 11.

Brenda Sattler-Dziedzic, the author of “Raising Butterflies and Moths in the Garden,” will discuss the components of a butterfly garden, which include sun, planting in groups, multiple locations for host plants, plant arrangements, sunning spots, overripe fruit, a place to puddle, nectar plants and host plants.

“It will go into depth about the host plants that the butterflies use and discuss some beneficial insects,” she said via email.

Books will be available to purchase at the event.

Nadine Thacker, the Shelby Gardeners Club’s program director, said Sattler-Dziedzic is a well-known expert on monarch butterflies.

“We expect that many local gardening enthusiasts will want to come hear her speak. She will also have her books available for sale. Donations to our all-volunteer Shelby Gardeners Club are always welcome. Come early for the best parking,” she said in an email.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP HOSTING GREEN MACOMB TREE SALE CLINTON TOWNSHIP — With Earth Day behind us and Arbor Day on the horizon, doing one’s part for the environment is on the conscious person’s mind.

If the call to do something for the planet is coming your way, perhaps planting a tree is the place to start.

This year, Clinton Township is hosting Green Macomb’s yearly Arbor Day plant and tree sale. The sale will take place April 28-29 at the township’s Civic Center on Romeo Plank Road.

“This is an effort by the county, and we’re partnering up with them in the township to see if we can increase the tree canopy and take advantage of the tremendous benefits of having a wider canopy,” Clinton Township Treasurer Paul Gieleghem said.

Normally held in Sterling Heights, the sale is a partnership between the county and the Blue Water Conservation District. Macomb County residents buy plants through the conservation district and pick them up at one of two sites, in either Armada or Clinton Township. Gieleghem expects there to be a surplus of plants available with anyone who has not pre-ordered one getting to pick from the remaining stock of paper birches, black cherries, Norway spruces, Douglas firs, red osier dogwoods and whatever other trees and plants are available. Plants are priced from $7 to $25.

Trees are sold as bare-root trees with thin, undeveloped trunks and roots exposed to the wind. David Lowenstein, consumer horticulture extension educator at the Michigan State University Extension in Macomb County, said plants like these need to get in the ground as soon as possible.

A good way of making sure you can plant the tree quickly is by digging a hole

before going to the sale, although not just any hole or location will do. Trees need space to safely grow, both by having the air free of hazards, like power lines, and a footprint on the ground roomy enough for the roots.

“You want to dig a hole that’s about two to three times the width of the root bulb,” Lowenstein said. “Those roots are going to spread horizontally in those first couple of years; you want to make sure they have space to grow and that they’re growing in an area where the soil isn’t compacted.”

If you must leave your tree out, keep the roots submerged in water and plant before the summer comes.

“Don’t plant a tree in the middle of the summer, because the tree is going to be stressed with the hotter temperatures and it is less likely to mature and survive,” Lowenstein said.

Watering trees once they are in the ground is essential. Young trees need more water than rain alone can provide, so give the tree a gentle watering at its base every day.

Aside from their aesthetics and ability to capture carbon dioxide, Gieleghem says trees provide a suite of benefits to streets and neighborhoods. Trees have been linked to increased property values up to 15% and lower costs of cooling thanks to canopies, and they engender calming behaviors within people around them, slowing neighborhood speeds by 3-15 mph.

“We’re viewing this as an opportunity to work with residents to provide a convenient way to help them beautify their yards, and in doing so, they’re going to be able to enjoy the benefits of watching trees grow, but the community benefits in a lot of different ways,” Gieleghem said.

REMEMBER TO VOTE IN THE MAY 2 ELECTION

SHELBY TOWNSHIP/UTICA — Utica Community Schools has two proposals on the ballot in the May 2 election. On the ballot, one is called the School Improvement Bond Proposal and the other is called the Replacement Operating Millage Proposal.

The bond proposal seeks to borrow up to $550 million and issue general obligation unlimited tax bonds, in one or more series, to pay for rebuilding or upgrading facilities and fields, safety enhancements, technology, and more. The school district calls it the “No Tax-Rate Increase Facilities Bond Proposal” and states in the ballot language that the debt millage required to retire all bonds outstanding and proposed is expected to remain at or below 3.5 mills.

The district explains the millage proposal as the “Non-Homestead Operating Replacement Millage.” Its 18 mills will bring in approximately $41.2 million for the 2023-24 school year. The state of Michigan requires all school districts to levy 18 mills on non-homestead property in order to receive their full shares of state aid. The 18 mills are paid on second homes, rental properties, businesses and vacant land. The proposal asks voters to authorize 20 mills, with 18 mills being the maximum amount the district can levy, to offset Headless Amendment rollbacks, which have reduced the amount the district can collect currently to 16.75 mills.

Under Headlee, if the assessed value of a local taxing jurisdiction increases by more than the inflation rate, the maximum property tax millage must be reduced so that the local jurisdiction’s total taxable property brings in the same gross revenue as adjusted for inflation.

Attorney general warns consumers about public charging stations METRO DETROIT — Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is warning consumers about another way that hackers steal personal data.

The FBI calls it “juice jacking,” which can occur whenever an electronic device is plugged into a public charging station like those found in airports or hotel lobbies.

Public charging stations are open to anyone, including those who can secretly install malware into the stations. When unsuspecting consumers plug in their devices, the malware gains access to the device being charged. The malware can lock the device or export personal data and passwords.

“Juice jacking” can happen by plugging a device into a public USB port with your own charging cable or by using an infected cable provided by someone else. The Federal Communications Commission has reported incidents of infected cables being given away as promotional gifts. In some cases, hackers hide a skimming device inside the USB ports of the kiosk.

Nessel provided tips to avoid becoming a victim: • Avoid using a public USB charging station. Use an AC power outlet instead.

• Bring an AC outlet charger, car chargers and your own USB cables with you when traveling.

• Carry a portable charger or external battery.

• Consider carrying a charging-only cable, which prevents data from sending or receiving while charging, from a trusted supplier.

• If you plug your device into a USB port and a prompt appears asking you to select “share data” or “charge only,” always select “charge only.”

Cornhole event to fight cancer

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — From 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. June 24, charitable organization 13Forever will have its first “Bag Childhood Cancer” cornhole event at Great Shots Backyard Bar & Games, 36901 Garfield Road in Clinton Township. Local radio and TV personalities will be throwing their support and bean bags for 13Forever, which helps children and families living with cancer. SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Shelby Township’s BurgessShadbush Nature Center will be hosting its Great Blue Heron Fest from noon to 2 p.m. May 5. Shelby Township is home to a large great blue heron rookery. The event will be held at Holland Ponds, 50385 Ryan Road, to learn about these birds. There will be free, allages guided hikes, activities and educational stations.

In the event of rain, guided hikes will continue at Holland Ponds on a schedule, and all other activities will take place at the nature center. The event is free.

MACOMB COUNTY — The Michigan Recreation & Park Association has honored Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Candice Miller with its “Local Elected Official Award” for her years of efforts to improve the quality of life for Michigan residents through parks and recreation promotion.

“This was an unexpected honor, and I’m very grateful,” Miller said in a statement. “Throughout my career in public service, I’ve always tried to think about quality of life and how we can improve the quality of life for everyone. Even though I might be the one getting the award, members of the association deserve awards for all the things they do for the quality of life for our folks throughout Michigan, each and every day.”

Miller’s work toward public parks projects includes securing funds for the Freedom Trail hiking and biking path along Metropolitan Parkway and a focus on improving water quality for boaters and anglers through maintaining and improving sewer infrastructure.

“From my perspective, what is so impressive is Candice’s will and drive to get things accomplished, utilizing all of her available resources to do so,” said Kyle Langlois, Sterling Heights parks and recreation director and chairman of the MParks Public Policy Committee. “Her ability to collaborate with all stakeholders to work together for a common purpose is second to none, and she should be viewed as nothing less than a model for other county public works operations to emulate.”

The Local Elected Official Award was announced recently at the MParks Conference and Trade Show and was presented to Miller at the April 13 meeting of the Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority’s Board of Commissioners, held at the Stony Creek Metropark Nature Center.

Retired Secret Service agent’s career is presidential

CLINTON TOWNSHIP — When protecting the president of the United States, anything can happen.

“You always have to expect the unexpected wherever you are at,” said Radford Jones, a retired special agent of the Michigan Division, U.S. Secret Service.

During his career as a Secret Service agent, Jones provided security for six presidents: John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. Secret Service protection continues long after presidents leave office.

On March 29, the Lake Orion resident spoke to about 35 people who attended the Macomb Community College’s Macomb Organization for Retiree Enrichment program at the Lorenzo Cultural Center on the college’s Center Campus. MORE is a lifelong learning initiative that is offering courses through May 18.

Through a slideshow presentation, personal stories and a photo collection, Jones recalled several events during his tenure, including the time the Secret Service figured out how to get Reagan’s 20-car motorcade to a small backyard barbecue in Hamtramck.

Jones also recalled an incident that occurred on Easter Sunday in 1966 during Johnson’s administration.

“Myself and another agent were on duty,” said Jones, who grew up in Hillsdale.

“It’s about 9 a.m. and the White House operator calls us and she says we just got word from the press that an individual says he’s going to burn himself in front of the White House (to protest) against the war in Vietnam.”

Johnson was not at the White House at the time. Jones, who learned of the man’s name, quickly went to the northwest gate to “see what’s going on.” The agent then ventured down the White House sidewalk, passing about 50 people dressed for Easter Sunday, including a woman holding a little girl’s hand. Jones then spotted a man coming toward him carrying two paper bags.

“I notice the bags are stained. As he got a little bit closer, I noticed he had matches and he’s trying to light them, so I hollered his name,” he said. “He looked at me and I dove at him. We’re wrestling around trying to get the gasoline away from him. Finally, we got him handcuffed. Fortunately, he wasn’t able to set himself on fire because I think some people would have gotten seriously injured.

A decade later, Jones was involved in the planning of Carter’s inauguration in 1977, which set a new precedent for the 1.7-mile parade route.

“Most presidents have ridden in a car and gotten out at the Treasury Building and they’ve walked to the White House,” Jones said.

Carter, however, told organizers he wanted to walk the entire route down Pennsylvania Avenue rather than be driven. Security wasn’t crazy about the idea, but Carter’s idea prevailed.

“Isn’t the best security a surprise?” Carter asked Jones. “He said if no one knows I’m going to walk the route it will be a surprise.

So, we walked the entire route.”

‘She made a line right to where the president was because she wanted to kiss him.’

Robert Kennedy’s assassination in June 1968 was a shock. Jones was off duty when his wife told him the news. Jones shared details of the senator’s funeral train procession from New York City to Washington, D.C. “They put the casket on top of chairs in the train so people could see it,” Jones remembered. “There were all types of people along the route. WATCH Police respond to screaming, items smashed

Mother pushed, hits head on counter

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — At 6:22 p.m. April 7, officers were dispatched to a residence in the area of Shelby and 25 Mile roads for a domestic violence complaint. Upon arrival, officers interviewed all the people in the home. According to the caller, she stated that she just came home from the bar with her daughter, at which point her daughter started yelling at her. The argument escalated to the point where the daughter pushed her mother to the floor in the kitchen. While falling, her head struck a cabinet, causing a laceration. The Shelby Township Fire Department was summoned to the scene to provide medical attention to the mother. The daughter was placed under arrest for domestic violence and transported to the Police Department for processing.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Officers were dispatched to an apartment in the area of West Utica and Ryan roads at 3:55 p.m. April 7. Dispatch received a call from a neighbor who reportedly could hear someone screaming from a nearby apartment.

Officers arrived on the scene and could hear loud screaming coming from the apartment. Officers made contact with the residents of the apartment. The argument was between a mother and her teenage daughter. The argument ensued over the mother taking her daughter’s phone away. The daughter then smashed her tablet and started kicking her mother, according to the police report. The daughter was arrested and transported to the Macomb County Juvenile Detention Center, according to police.

WAYS TO REDUCE NOISE IN YOUR YARD THROUGH LANDSCAPING

METRO DETROIT — Unwanted noise can come from all different directions, whether it is from the road, airplanes or neighbors’ parties.

If your home is located somewhere with bothersome noise, there are several ways to reduce it through natural and man-made products.

Richard A. Kolano, P.E, the principal consultant at Kolano & Saha Engineers, said the length of a sound barrier is important while attempting to reduce noise, especially from a road.

“The sound barrier has to be generally quite long,” Kolano said. “If you have a 50-foot wide lot that backs up against the roadway, unless your neighbors also have a sound barrier that connects to yours and extends along the length of that roadway, your 50-foot length of wall alone is not going to do all that much. That’s why when you see highway road noise barriers there they tend to be fairly long.”

Kolano said the noise-reduction strategy for a yard depends on the geometry of the home relative to the

noise source.

“Generally with a sound barrier, there’s an acoustic shadow zone, and the farther out you are from that barrier, the less benefit the barrier provides,” Kolano said.

“You need to be in that shadow zone to receive the most benefit.”

Natural barriers

Cameron Judge, the owner of Detroit Landscaping Co., said he tends to prefer natural solutions to remedy noise issues in a yard.

“I, personally, think the more plant life, the better. It looks better, in my opinion,” Judge said.

One natural solution that landscapers often recommend to reduce noise and provide privacy is planting arborvitaes.

“Arborvitaes are probably the best for that, and they do look really good because they get to a decent size, and it is like a natural wall around your property,” Judge said.

Brianna Carrier, a landscape designer for Visionary Landscaping, said people often plant spruce trees and arborvitaes to reduce noise.

“Spruce trees and arborvitaes grow larger and are denser compared to deciduous shrubs that will lose their leaves in the fall,” Carrier said.

Since dirt is a good sound barrier, Kolano suggested people look into living walls, also known as green walls and vertical gardens.

Kolano said these are popular in Europe.

“A living wall is essentially a pile of dirt that is stacked up vertically and has plant materials that grow on both sides of it, so the root structure helps to contain the dirt within that wall,” Kolano said. “The plants don’t do much from an acoustic standpoint. It’s the dirt that is providing the sound barrier. The plants make it look attractive.”

Local Acre and Vertical Earth Detroit owner Mark Hanford specializes in the design and installation of living walls.

“What I have noticed is, every time that you have a living wall, it has a definite muting (quality),” Hanford said. “It kind of holds the sound close, and it takes that reflective sound away.”

Fences

Due to the materials, height and density

of many fences, they are not as highly recommended by Kolano.

“It’s limited as to when that can be a benefit, because it depends upon the geometry of the home relative to the noise sources, such as the road traffic,” Kolano said. “A fence, per se, isn’t going to do very much. It needs a sound barrier wall, which means it needs to have a significant amount of mass to it that is without penetrations, without separations between boards, for example, that you would have in a fence.”

However, they can provide some benefit, and if one would like to purchase a fence for the benefits they may be able to provide in reducing noise, there are certain things to keep in mind.

Randy Huyck, the general manager at Action Fence of Michigan, said the best fencing material to reduce noise is stone; however, he said it is expensive, and many communities do not allow it. Other options include wood and vinyl fences. Huyck said it is best to look for the densest materials available. He also recommends planting things around the fence to help absorb sound.

Renee Hannaford, the office manager of Mr. Fence Inc., and Kevin Temerowski, the owner of Michigan Fence Solutions, both recommended a 6-foot-tall vinyl fence to absorb noise.

Franks chose a Ford Bronco from the dozens of eligible vehicles.

“UCS is my home. It is where I send my children to school. It’s where I’ve done my teaching, but the most incredible thing for me is the team that we have here at UCS — how we all come together for our most valuable asset, which is our kids. It’s a team effort,” she said in an email interview.

She said being named Teacher of the Year is a special honor because she works with “amazing” teachers who inspire her every day, and she said it’s an honor to represent them. Franks was chosen as the overall Teacher of the Year from a final pool that included Rachel Adams, who is the district’s 2023 Junior High Teacher of the Year, and Dr. Lisa Grunewald, who is the district’s 2023 Senior High Teacher of the Year.

“I am very thankful for the opportunity. It’s surreal,” Franks said.

The Teacher of the Year program is a partnership between Utica Community Schools and the Suburban Collection. For 21 years, the program has celebrated exceptional educators for their dedication to the

success of their students.

Jessica Conti, a parent, said Franks leads with kindness and a listening ear.

“My child has gained so much confidence in herself academically and socially this year. She has blossomed into a hard worker, team player and has taken so much pride in her work ... thanks to the encouragement from Mrs. Franks, who will forever be in our hearts,” Conti said via email.

Superintendent Robert Monroe said Franks is an example of the excellent teachers who can be found in classrooms throughout the district.

“She is (a) mentor to her colleagues who effectively uses data to promote student success. She is the teacher leader at Collins Elementary and works in partnership with the community on important issues, including school safety. Most importantly, she cares deeply about the success of others and treats everyone she meets with kindness and respect,” he said in an email.

Commissioner Candice Miller said. “It is extremely acidic. Sometimes you’ll walk by a sewer grate and you’ll smell an odor — that’s what you’re smelling.”

Acidic hydrogen sulfate ate away at the concrete pipe, creating a situation that Miller feared could lead to a sinkhole forming if nothing was done to fix it. Normally, the county would use a slip line repair method, but that would require a massive footprint to bring in new pipe and would involve shutting down the intersection during the installation. A slip line repair would also reduce the sewer’s diameter and slow down the flow, in addition to reducing the flow while work was underway.

The Macomb County Public Works Office instead decided to use the spiralwound pipe repair method, requiring less surface and underground disruptions. In doing so, the project became the first in Michigan to employ the technique.

“It is very much like traditional slip lining, with the exception of we don’t have to dig a large shaft to push pipe into it and we’re utilizing existing structure such as manholes or bolts to access that sewer,” said Anthony Aderhold, of SAK Construction, the contractors performing the work. “The materials for SPR come on large spools, and it’s a PVC strip. We use an advancing machine that winds it into the pipe.”

the PVC around the existing pipe structure before supports and a structural grout are applied to lock the lining in. The use of only an advancing machine and a pipe spool reduces the surface footprint. The lack of workers going into the pipe allows the sewer to flow as it normally does, and the smooth PVC pipe reduces the friction of the pipe section without significantly changing the diameter.

SPR repairs are not common. Aderhold said SAK only does about two or three repairs of this kind a year.

“They are a niche product,” Aderhold said. “It comes into play when an owner is looking at it and goes, ‘Man, we have very little room for equipment or we can’t bypass it.’ From a cost perspective, it’s very comparable to traditional slip lining where you have a deep trench or a large diameter pipe, but the production rate is quite slower on (traditional slip lining).”

The rehabilitation project cost about $3 million and is expected to last for 50 years.

At press time on April 19, grout was being applied to the pipe. The county expects the project to be completed in May. “We are well on our way to getting this thing complete and hopefully get the traffic cones out of the way,” Miller said.

Repairing the pipe is not the last thing the department plans to do in the 21 Mile and Garfield area. A small air scrubber will be built near the intersection to manage the hydrogen sulfate odors from the sewage.

Construction of the scrubber is expected to be completed by late 2025.

Six months later, the senator’s widow, Ethel Kennedy, sent Jones a personal note.

“I got a message (that said), ‘Thank you for all the nice things you’ve done for me,’” Jones said. “These are some of the things you don’t hear about with dignitaries.”

One of Jones’ photos depicted the exact moment in 1975 when Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme tried to shoot Ford in Sacramento, who was swiftly evacuated from the area. “(Fromme) didn’t load the (handgun) properly so it wouldn’t have fired, but you don’t know that when it happens,” Jones said.

On a lighter note, the MORE attendees chuckled when Jones recalled the episode surrounding Ford’s attendance at the 1979 Major League Baseball All-Star Game at the Kingdome in Seattle. Morganna the Kissing Bandit, who routinely ran onto baseball fields and basketball courts to kiss athletes, sprinted over to the former commander in chief for a smooch. It didn’t go over well.

“She made a line right to where the president was because she wanted to kiss him,” Jones said. “She got stopped and got

Jones also protected many foreign heads of state, including the U.K.’s Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip when they visited in 1976. During the presentation, the guest speaker also talked about the history of presidential train travel, and related security concerns and issues.

Jones retired as a Secret Service agent in 1983. He also retired from Ford Motor Co. as the manager of global security and fire protection, and worked 17 years as instructor in the School of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University.

“We’re very glad to have him here,” MORE Adult Education Outreach Program Director Dave Tarrant said. “He has a very distinguished background.”

MORE student Art Rathke described Jones as a “good speaker” and thought his presentation was “great.”

“It covered a wide variety of topics and was more interesting than I imagined it would be,” Rathke said.

Rathke, 69, of Sterling Heights, has attended other MORE programs and credits Tarrant for always finding good programs.

Insect control: A homeowner’s guide to surviving the spring season

METRO DETROIT — The spring season is a safe haven for Michiganders.

It’s not only a prequel to the beautiful summer months, but it’s also a season people tend to look forward to as soon as the rainfall and cold fronts of September come around.

But as warmer weather approaches, the spring season showcases one problem most homeowners find themselves having to tend to.

“With the warm weather last week, people are seeing a lot of wasps and different types of bees around the house, and spiders, pavement ants, the tiny sugar ants and carpenter ants are starting to emerge,” Michael Kharsa, who works for CJB Pest and Mosquito Control in Farmington Hills, said April 18.

Kharsa has noticed an influx of calls as the season rolls around.

Ants, bees and spiders tend to be the primary culprits during this time, especially with insects trying to find safety from the rainfall.

Michael Mangino, owner of What’s Bugging You in St Clair Shores, has noticed this with his recent jobs.

“With ants, they’re coming into houses a lot more,” Mangino said. “A lot of it is probably attributed to our high water table, I imagine. They’re going into houses and finding paradise there.”

The insects’ ability to make their way into residences is a reminder to have your house sprayed on a consistent basis throughout the year.

CJB Pest and Mosquito Control offers a tri-seasonal package for spring, summer and just before the winter months to treat any issues that homeowners might face.

Kharsa said CJB focuses on not only eliminating the threat but also on preventing insects from making their way into the house.

“When we come out, we’re going to treat around your interior and exterior part of your walls to force the insects from the structure, and we’re going to put a perimeter service around the exterior to prevent the insects from coming in,” Kharsa said. “Basically, we’re providing a barrier and forcing the ones from the walls outside.”

Pest control doesn’t stop with treating an insect problem; it can also provide a home inspection, to some extent.

While CJB and What’s Bugging You, and many other pest control companies, offer spraying services, a technician will also walk a residence with a homeowner and discuss areas that might not only

be hot spots for insects but also should be treated to prevent future home issues.

Mangino said the inspection is a vital part to the service he provides.

“Of course, walking with people around their house and pointing out things that could be beneficial, like caulking some areas, pitching the water away from the homes is a big thing, and trimming back foliage away from the house,” Mangino said. “Those are all things that contribute to keeping the longevity of the home, as well as keeping pests away.”

For those who are motivated to do it themselves, safety is the primary concern when dealing with pest control products.

It’s plausible for minor problems, but consistent issues should be treated by professionals, especially if the homeowner has pets or small children.

“The right way to go about it is to read and understand the label 100%,” Mangino said. “The label is the law in our industry, and that’s for good reason because you can get hurt. You can hurt somebody else, and some of these products that people are able to buy online are traditionally for professionals only. There are some great products available that the public can seek out and find, but a lot of them tend to go away in our industry because homeowners misuse them.”

As the spring season approaches, active insects should be an important reminder to keep up on pest control treatment throughout the year.

The rain and warmth in spring calls for treatment due to the insects becoming active, but an important time frame to keep an eye on is before October.

To keep the insects from getting “weathered in,” when they get inside the walls due to the cold temperatures, a service spray before winter is needed.

But like most services, the best way to resolve the problem is to keep up with it regularly.

“As far as spider treatments and general pest control, that’s more of an exterior spray. If people want it to remain as general pest free as possible, typically spring, summer and fall treatments,” Mangino said. “If they wanted any sort of treatment on the inside, what I would recommend, at the very most, would be early spring with light treatment on the inside with cracks and crevices.”

ar enthusiasts who have an affection for vintage vehicles might want to race over to Stahls Automotive Collection.

The museum is the creation of businessman Ted Stahl, who — during his childhood — developed an interest in automobiles and who — as an adult — began collecting antique cars. The car buff, whose grandfather once owned a garage, wanted to share his passion with others, so in 2006, he opened Stahls Automotive Collection in St. Clair Shores.

Five years later, the museum relocated to Chesterfield Township to accommodate the growing collection.

“He’s always been drawn to mechanical things and loves the artistry and engineering behind these historical vehicles,” General Manager Terri Coppens said via email. “He wants to keep the history alive.”

The Stahls Automotive Foundation is a nonprofit organization designed to preserve, restore and exhibit specific vintage vehicles of the 20th Century.

Stahls Automotive Collection is open from 1 to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the first Saturday of the month. There is no cost to visit, but donations are welcome. Visitors can tour the exhibit at their own pace. Staff members keep everything running smoothly, and there’s a group of volunteer docents who share interesting details about the vehicles.

Every piece inside Stahls Automotive Collection tells a story: the one-of-a-kind cars, roadside memorabilia, historic gasoline pumps and shiny chrome. According to Administrative Assistant Chloe Gieraga, there are approximately 220 cars in the collection, but not all are on the floor at the same time.

“Ted is constantly buying more, so the number changes,” Gieraga said. “We do swap the cars, and some are in storage, so when people come back, they are sure to see some new ones.”

Sometimes, too, the prized possessions are lent out to different car shows.

“Most of the cars do come from auctions, but some come from classic car dealers or even private sellers. Some have been purchased from overseas, but the majority have been in the U.S.,” Coppens said. “For the most part, we look for things that will tell the story of automotive history. Also things that will bring joy to others.”

The temperature and humidity inside the museum are controlled to keep the cars in mint condition.

“Our staff and volunteers do a great job taking care of the cars and making sure they look pristine,” Coppens said.

Early in the tour, visitors view a 1904 Oldsmobile Model 6C Curved-Dash Runabout and a 1910 Buick Model F Touring right next to it. In another spot rests a 1919 Pierce-Arrow Model 66 A-4 Tourer, and spectators also can check out a 1935 Brewster Town Car. As for Coppens, her favorite car is the 1931 Cord LeGrande Speedster.

“Most people know it because it has a bar in the door,” she said.

Currently, the museum only has a few muscle cars, but plans are in the works to add more.

“We are slowly trying to for the car buffs who like those cars,” Gieraga said.

Staff is trying to add more kid-friendly interactive activities. One example was the Halloween Trunk-Or-Treat last fall.

The building also has a room dedicated to vintage organs — another of Stahls first loves — that play music periodically throughout the day.

‘It was fit for a king.’

Other treasures that really attract visitors are the 1948 Tucker sedan and the 1963 Chrysler Turbine car. The Turbine was an experimental two-door hardtop coupe powered by a turbine engine that didn’t catch on in the industry.

Docent Jack Haynes said just 51 Tuckers were made under automobile entrepreneur Preston Tucker and “only 47 survived.”

It also gave the Big Three competition.

“It was recognized as a good car. The car is very sturdy, like a tank,” Haynes said. “It’s a rear engine, very roomy, has shatterproof glass and independent four-wheel suspension. There are all kinds of safety features.”

But one safety feature was left out: seatbelts. As Haynes explained, Tucker was told, “If you put in seatbelts, people are going to think this is dangerous.”

Another slice of nostalgia is the 1965 Kirkham AC Cobra, which docent Duane

Sabella is knowledgeable about. One plus to volunteering at the museum is hearing the “very interesting stories” of people visiting the museum.

Trey Brand is the museum’s historian and is always glad to share narratives about each car.

“The higher-end cars were built custom for one person,” Brand said.

“It was fit for a king,” Brand said. “Like a lot of wealthy people at the time, he had a driver.”

The tires on the car are approximately 36 inches in size.

“The wheels are original,” Brand said.

“They’ve been restored but they haven’t been replaced.”

The car stayed in top condition. “Because Roscoe lived in Los Angeles, he didn’t have to deal with bad weather,” Brand said.

Constructed from wood with techniques normally used for boats, the 1924 Delage GL Skiff Torpedo is another crown jewel.

“Delage was a French luxury brand in the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s,” Brand said. “It’s essentially a boat. It has three layers of wood in a crisscross pattern. The outer layer is mahogany. Oak is stronger and cheaper, but mahogany looks better. It’s more rich and colorful.”
