EASTPOINTE — When windy weather blew through town a few weeks back, it knocked over the sign in front of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Shafer-Rachelle-Latham Post No. 6782.

The members of the post are making plans to get new signage.

Quartermaster Cliff Wilson has created a GoFundMe page to raise money to replace the

Proposed emergency services contract brings focus to Eastpointe fire staffing, hiring issues

EASTPOINTE — A proposed emergency medical and transportation contract that was recently brought before City Council was tabled to allow negotiations to be completed that

would let the city’s firefighters union hire more firefighters.

Since 2012, the city has had a contract with Medstar that provided an emergency vehicle in the city limits for a period each day. The proposed new contract would have a vehicle in the city 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in

preparation for low staffing levels in the city’s Fire Department.

The 12-month contract would cost the city slightly more than $351,000. However, not all present at the meeting were on board with the idea.

ROSEVILLE — Roseville Community Schools Superintendent Mark Blaszkowski had a message for the middle school students recognized at the April 17 Board of Education meeting.

The students — from Roseville Middle School and Eastland Middle School — were honored for being student leaders in band, student council, National Junior Honor Society, choir, robotics and advanced band. Blaszkowski encouraged them to continue with their extracurricular activities.

“These are things that can help you stay involved in school, and you are going to be more successful. I guarantee it,” Blaszkowski said. “Of course, parents, you are their first teachers. So congratulations for setting a great foundation and carrying on those expectations of your children to be good students. Continue to stay involved even though they don’t want you to. You have to stay involved, and if you do, you’ll see good things.”

Red Cross ‘Sound the Alarm’ program runs until May 6

METRO DETROIT — The American Red Cross has joined forces with local public safety agencies, businesses and governments for “Sound the Alarm,” which began April 15 and runs until May 6.

Through Sound the Alarm, the Red Cross and its community partners will install free smoke alarms in people’s homes. The smoke alarms are made possible by donations to the Red Cross.

The Red Cross also will meet with families to create twominute fire escape plans and share safety information about home fires and other local disaster risks. A fire escape plan should include at least two ways to exit every room in the home and be practiced twice a year.

EASTPOINTE — The Eastpointe Beautification Commission will hold its plant exchange from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. May 6 at the Eastpointe Memorial Library’s courtyard, 15875 Oak Ave. The plant exchange gives participants a chance to bring in plants of their own and exchange them with other gardeners.

Sound the Alarm is part of the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, which was launched in 2014 to reduce fire-related deaths and injuries by installing free smoke alarms and teaching families about home fire safety.

The Red Cross recommends the smoke alarms be placed on each level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms and sleeping areas. Smoke alarms also should be tested once a month, and the batteries should be changed at least once a year.

Smoke alarms older than 10 years should be replaced.

Several council members and the city’s firefighters union president voiced their concerns over the contract when it came before the City Council at its April 4 meeting.

The first point of contention was brought to light by City Councilman Harvey Curley, who asked why the city administration wanted to spend “$351,000 for one person and one vehicle.”

City Manager Mariah Walton responded by saying that the contract was to supplement the Fire Department’s low staffing.

“Our department, as of July 1, will be down an entire shift,” Walton said. “We have three shifts right now. We have low staffing. … This is not saying that we have a bad department. I think we have incredibly qualified guys.”

While the city does have a requirement that each firefighter be a paramedic as well, the city does not provide transportation services, Walton added.

“So if we have low staffing, our priority in the Fire Department needs to be our fire calls, and if we are able to move forward with this contract, Medstar will be able to assist when we are at low staffing with ensuring that our medical calls are handled by Medstar,” she said.

Council member Cardi DeMonaco raised the question of how many calls the new unit would be responding to. Eastpointe’s Michigan Professional Firefighters Union President Joe Zangara stated that the unit would be able to respond to medical calls while the Fire Department might be responding to a fire.

“The medical runs are being handled by Medstar. That’s what an ambulance is for,” he said. “We respond to every high priority run possible that we can. If we’re out on a fire, we can’t respond.”

However, Zangara said the focus should be on getting the department to proper staffing levels.

While he doesn’t know of a time when staffing levels have been low enough that they haven’t been able to respond to a call, he said staffing levels are dropping “dangerously low.”

“The shortcoming is the lack of personnel.

This has been brought up for well over a year. This has been predictable,” he said. “I have been sounding the alarm on this for well over a year.”

Zangara said contract negotiations were in progress, and he believes something could be put into place that would allow the department to hire enough firefighters to negate the need for the proposed emergency services contract. Even with the shortage of first responders being a national issue, he said Eastpointe’s pay and benefits are among the lowest in the county.

He added that the money that would be used for the contract would be better spent by investing in firefighters.

“If we want to attract high-quality candidates, provide the best service to our residents, at the end of the day, we’re all talking about it, our game needs to be elevated,” he said.

Zangara also added that the unit Medstar would be providing wouldn’t be able to transport residents.

“That $351,000 is for an SUV vehicle to drive around town,” he said. “That vehicle’s not transporting anybody to a hospital.”

While negotiations are occurring, Walton added that the contract isn’t the city’s first option; however, it would be a temporary measure to ensure services could be provided until the Fire Department was again at full staffing levels.

“This is not our first option of resolving the issue. This is really our last-ditch effort to ensure that we can cover services,” she said.

Ultimately, the City Council agreed to table the discussion after a motion made by Curley. The next City Council meeting was scheduled for April 25, after press time, and its agenda included time to discuss the Medstar contract.

Mayor Monique Owens noted at the April 4 meeting that a special meeting could be held if necessary.

Earlier in the April 4 meeting, City Council voted to approve the purchase of two new defibrillators for the department, replacing devices that were 10 years old. Earlier this year, council also voted to approve the purchase of a new fire engine for the department.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP — When protecting the president of the United States, anything can happen.

“You always have to expect the unexpected wherever you are at,” said Radford Jones, a retired special agent of the Michigan Division, U.S. Secret Service.

During his career as a Secret Service agent, Jones provided security for six Jones presidents: John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. Secret Service protection continues long after presidents leave office.

On March 29, the Lake Orion resident spoke to about 35 people who attended the Macomb Community College’s Macomb Organization for Retiree Enrichment program at the Lorenzo Cultural Center on the college’s Center Campus. MORE is a

lifelong learning initiative that is offering courses through May 18.

Through a slideshow presentation, personal stories and a photo collection, Jones recalled several events during his tenure, including the time the Secret Service figured out how to get Reagan’s 20-car motorcade to a small backyard barbecue in Hamtramck.

Jones also recalled an incident that occurred on Easter Sunday in 1966 during Johnson’s administration.

“Myself and another agent were on duty,” said Jones, who grew up in Hillsdale.

“It’s about 9 a.m. and the White House operator calls us and she says we just got word from the press that an individual says he’s going to burn himself in front of the White House (to protest) against the war in Vietnam.”

Johnson was not at the White House at the time. Jones, who learned of the man’s name, quickly went to the northwest gate to “see what’s going on.” The agent then ventured down the White House sidewalk, passing about 50 people dressed for Easter See AGENT on page 8A

Robert Kennedy’s assassination in June 1968 was a shock. Jones was off duty when his wife told him the news.

Jones shared details of the senator’s funeral train procession from New York City to Washington, D.C. “They put the casket on top of chairs in the train so people could see it,” Jones remembered. “There were all types of people along the route. It was heartening to see the respect they had for the senator.”

Six months later, the senator’s widow, Ethel Kennedy, sent Jones a personal note.

“I got a message (that said), ‘Thank you for all the nice things you’ve done for me,’” Jones said. “These are some of the things you don’t hear about with dignitaries.”

One of Jones’ photos depicted the exact moment in 1975 when Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme tried to shoot Ford in Sacramento, who was swiftly evacuated from the area. “(Fromme) didn’t load the (handgun) properly so it wouldn’t have fired, but you don’t know that when it happens,” Jones said.

On a lighter note, the MORE attendees chuckled when Jones recalled the episode surrounding Ford’s attendance at the 1979 Major League Baseball All-Star Game at the Kingdome in Seattle. Morganna the Kissing Bandit, who routinely ran onto baseball fields and basketball courts to kiss athletes, sprinted over to the former commander in chief for a smooch. It didn’t go over well.

“She made a line right to where the president was because she wanted to kiss him,” Jones said. “She got stopped and got arrested and spent the night in jail.”

Jones also protected many foreign heads of state, including the U.K.’s Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip

when they visited in 1976. During the presentation, the guest speaker also talked about the history of presidential train travel, and related security concerns and issues.

Jones retired as a Secret Service agent in 1983. He also retired from Ford Motor Co. as the manager of global security and fire protection, and worked 17 years as instructor in the School of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University.

“We’re very glad to have him here,” MORE Adult Education Outreach Program Director Dave Tarrant said. “He has a very distinguished background.”

MORE student Art Rathke described Jones as a “good speaker” and thought his presentation was “great.”

“It covered a wide variety of topics and was more interesting than I imagined it would be,” Rathke said.

Rathke, 69, of Sterling Heights, has attended other MORE programs and credits Tarrant for always finding good programs.

“I notice the bags are stained. As he got a little bit closer, I noticed he had matches and he’s trying to light them, so I hollered his name,” he said. “He looked at me and I dove at him. We’re wrestling around trying to get the gasoline away from him. Finally, we got him handcuffed. Fortunately, he wasn’t able to set himself on fire because I think some people would have gotten seriously injured. I always think back to the lady with the little girl, whether she may have been burned also.”

A decade later, Jones was involved in the planning of Carter’s inauguration in 1977, which set a new precedent for the 1.7-mile parade route.

“Most presidents have ridden in a car and gotten out at the Treasury Building and they’ve walked to the White House,” Jones said.

Carter, however, told organizers he wanted to walk the entire route down Pennsylvania Avenue rather than be driven. Security wasn’t crazy about the idea, but Carter’s idea prevailed.

“Isn’t the best security a surprise?” Carter asked Jones.

“He said if no one knows I’m going to walk the route it will be a surprise. So, we walked the entire route.”

Following an unconventional, rainfilled weekend at the Masters in Augusta, Georgia, the Professional Golf Association’s Rocket Mortgage Classic made a splash of its own, announcing early commitments for the midsummer tournament from June 27 to July 2.

Two-time major champion Collin Morikawa, who is currently ranked 13th in the Official World Golf Ranking, will make his debut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic this year following a tie for 10th at the Masters.

Morikawa, who has four top-10 results in 10 events this season, was the 2020 PGA Championship and 2021 British Open Championship winner, and he has five wins on the PGA Tour in his career.

During the meeting, the teachers who are the school club sponsors introduced the students one at a time and presented them with certificates. The students then quickly introduced their families.

The Roseville Middle School band sponsor is Megan Szypula; student council sponsors are Mark Baldes and Ann Paul; and NJHS sponsors are Ann Paul and Emily Grimes.

Szypula also is the Roseville Middle School and Eastland Middle School combined choir sponsor, and Christine Beckner is the robotics sponsor. Gary Hill is the Eastland Middle School advanced band sponsor; Taylor Riley is the NJHS sponsor at Eastland Middle School; and Becky Gardner is the Eastland Middle School student council sponsor.

There are different qualifications that students need to have to be involved in band, choir and the other clubs. The Roseville Middle School student council is one example.

“This year, we wanted to put together a really special group of student leaders, so we had a pretty extensive application process,” Baldes said. “Kids had to write a lengthy response of why they felt they could be a difference-maker in the school, a true student leader.

And I think we put together quite a collection of talent with our student body.”

Many board members said a few words in honor of the student leaders.

“I just wanted to say congrats to all the students and the parents that were recognized tonight,” Trustee Gina Aiuto said. “Great job and keep it up.”

The VFW post formed in 1957. At one time, the group had 600 members, and now there are 160. The post is always looking for military veterans to join, said Oleksiak, a veteran who served in the army from 1965 to 1968, including time spent in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967.

ar enthusiasts who have an affection for vintage vehicles might want to race over to Stahls Automotive Collection.

The museum is the creation of businessman Ted Stahl, who — during his childhood — developed an interest in automobiles and who — as an adult — began collecting antique cars. The car buff, whose grandfather once owned a garage, wanted to share his passion with others, so in 2006, he opened Stahls Automotive Collection in St. Clair Shores.

Five years later, the museum relocated to Chesterfield Township to accommodate the growing collection.

“He’s always been drawn to mechanical things and loves the artistry and engineering behind these historical vehicles,” General Manager Terri Coppens said via email. “He wants to keep the history alive.”

The Stahls Automotive Foundation is a nonprofit organization designed to preserve, restore and exhibit specific vintage vehicles of the 20th Century.

Stahls Automotive Collection is open from 1 to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the first Saturday of the month. There is no cost to visit, but donations are welcome. Visitors can tour the exhibit at their own pace. Staff members keep everything running smoothly, and there’s a group of volunteer docents who share interesting details about the vehicles.

Every piece inside Stahls Automotive Collection tells a story: the one-ofa-kind cars, roadside memorabilia, historic gasoline pumps and shiny chrome.

According to Administrative Assistant Chloe Gieraga, there are approximately 220 cars in the collection, but not all are on the floor at the same time.

“Ted is constantly buying more, so the number changes,” Gieraga said.

“We do swap the cars, and some are in storage, so when people come back, they are sure to see some new ones.”

Sometimes, too, the prized possessions are lent out to different car shows.

“Most of the cars do come from auctions, but some come from classic car dealers or even private sellers. Some have been purchased from overseas, but the majority have been in the U.S.,” Coppens said. “For the most part, we look for things that will tell the story of automotive history. Also things that will bring joy to others.”

The temperature and humidity inside the museum are controlled to keep the cars in mint condition.

“Our staff and volunteers do a great job taking care of the cars and making sure they look pristine,” Coppens said.

Early in the tour, visitors view a 1904 Oldsmobile Model 6C CurvedDash Runabout and a 1910 Buick Model F Touring right next to it. In another spot rests a 1919 Pierce-Arrow Model 66 A-4 Tourer, and spectators also can check out a 1935 Brewster Town Car. See STAHLS on page 12A

As for Coppens, her favorite car is the 1931 Cord LeGrande Speedster.

“Most people know it because it has a bar in the door,” she said.

Currently, the museum only has a few muscle cars, but plans are in the works to add more.

“We are slowly trying to for the car buffs who like those cars,” Gieraga said.

Staff is trying to add more kid-friendly interactive activities. One example was the Halloween Trunk-Or-Treat last fall.

The building also has a room dedicated to vintage organs — another of Stahls first loves — that play music periodically throughout the day.

‘It was fit for a king.’

Other treasures that really attract visitors are the 1948 Tucker sedan and the 1963 Chrysler Turbine car. The Turbine was an experimental two-door hardtop coupe powered by a turbine engine that didn’t catch on in the industry.

Docent Jack Haynes said just 51 Tuckers were made under automobile entrepreneur Preston Tucker and “only 47 survived.” It also gave the Big Three competition.

“It was recognized as a good car. The car is very sturdy, like a tank,” Haynes said. “It’s a rear engine, very roomy, has shatterproof glass and independent four-wheel suspension.

There are all kinds of safety features.”

But one safety feature was left out: seatbelts. As Haynes explained, Tucker was told, “If you put in seatbelts, people are going to think this is dangerous.”

Another slice of nostalgia is the 1965 Kirkham AC Cobra, which docent Duane Sabella is knowledgeable about. One plus to volunteering at the museum is hearing the “very interesting stories” of people visiting the museum.

Trey Brand is the museum’s historian and is always glad to share narratives about each car.

“The higher-end cars were built custom for one person,” Brand said.

The purple-blue 1919 “Fatty” Arbuckle Pierce-Arrow, for instance, is a standout and was custom-made for silent film actor Roscoe Conkling Arbuckle, best known as “Fatty.”

“It was fit for a king,” Brand said. “Like a lot of wealthy people at the time, he had a driver.”

The tires on the car are approximately 36 inches in size.

“The wheels are original,” Brand said.

“They’ve been restored but they haven’t been replaced.”

There are more than 200 cars on display at Stahls Automotive Collection. Most of the cars are one-of-a-kind and higher-end models.

The car stayed in top condition. “Because Roscoe lived in Los Angeles, he didn’t have to deal with bad weather,” Brand said.

Constructed from wood with techniques normally used for boats, the 1924 Delage GL Skiff Torpedo is another crown jewel.

“Delage was a French luxury brand in the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s,” Brand said. “It’s essentially a boat. It has three layers of wood in a crisscross pattern. The outer layer is mahogany. Oak is stronger and cheaper, but mahogany looks better. It’s more rich and colorful.”

dergarten and then graduated from the high school last year. She was actually valedictorian; we’re very proud of that,” Brun said.

“My younger daughter is a freshman at the high school. She is actively involved with the marching band. My husband, Paul, is a great dad and a great husband. I am just glad to be here supporting the community even more.”

Prior to joining the board, Brun volunteered in various capacities in the district, including in the library at Kment, on the Kment and Eastland Middle School’s Parent Teacher Organizations and for the Roseville High School band.

“It has allowed me to interact with the kids a lot more, and I got to know the parents in the schools and community,” Brun said.

“She has been active in our schools for a long time,” board President Theresa Genest echoed. “Denise volunteers quite a bit in our community and will be an asset to our community.”

The other elected officials welcomed Brun to the board, as did Superintendent Mark Blaszkowski.

“Your commitment to the district and helping us in many fashions is appreciated.

I’m sure you will continue to help us do that as well,” Blaszkowski said. “Congratulations on being a part of our team.”
