METRO DETROIT — Cue those turntables: It’s time to kick out the jams.

On April 22, local independent record stores will open up shop for Record Store Day 2023.

Record Store Day, held internationally, was launched in 2007 to give employees and customers the chance to gather and celebrate the independent record store culture. In addition, record companies release new music or re-release albums on vinyl not available elsewhere. That could include picture discs and LPs from bands no longer together.

“Record Store Day started out when vinyl was making a comeback,” said Davey Taylor, who with wife Lisa Taylor owns Weirdsville Records at 61 Macomb Place in Mount Clemens. “It’s about helping the mom-and-pop shops. Sometimes you get a lot of new customers that have never been to the store or new people who just got a record player.”

WARREN — It has been said public service is among the highest callings. Those looking to serve the community of Warren may find something that resonates with them and inspires them to act, or even run for an elected office.

The next filing deadline to do so is 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25. Candidates have until 4 p.m. on Friday, April 28, to withdraw, after which all filings are official, according to the City Clerk’s Office.

To be eligible for any elected office in Warren, the city charter states a candidate must be a registered voter in the city for at least two years immediately prior to the election. Running for mayor requires an additional year of residency.

Church thrift store, food pantry fill community needs

WARREN — Every Wednesday afternoon, several members of Woodside Bible Church-Warren Campus gather in the basement of the south entrance to do the Lord’s work.

They are the volunteers who operate the church’s Thrift Closet, a resale shop that sells gently used items — clothing, jewelry, kitchenware, tools — at discounted prices. The staff is friendly, purchases are cash only, and all sales are final.

The Thrift Closet is open from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. every Wednesday. The See THRIFT STORE on page 24A

WARREN — It’s 49 years and counting for the Warren Symphony Orchestra.

To celebrate, the symphony will host its final performance of the 2022-2023 season, “Out of This World,” featuring the music of Star Wars, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 23, at the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts.

The Warren Symphony Orchestra is the only professional symphony orchestra in Macomb County. Its mission is to support and advance an orchestra of professional quality for cultural enrichment, entertainment and youth education.

Free admission is available for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. College students can purchase tickets for a reduced rate.

“What a great way to spend a Sunday with the family encouraging music appreciation,” said Warren Symphony Orchestra Executive Director Joyce Russell.

In 49 years, the Warren Symphony Orchestra has grown and evolved. Starting out by filling a void due to financial challenges facing the Warren Consolidated Schools district, the orchestra has evolved into a 50-musician, nationally recognized professional symphony orchestra.

“The orchestra’s impetus was because of the defunding of string education and so our community rallied together from 1971 to 1973 to ensure our children and residents were not without access to the musical majesty of orchestras,” said Russell.

In nearly five decades, the Warren Symphony Orchestra has grown its presence throughout the community and is often referred to as the WSO by patrons. Its growth exemplifies diversity and representation.

PILOTS FOCUSED ON ‘GROWING PHASE’ IN 2024

WARREN — A year removed from their first-ever Michigan High School Athletic Association Division I state championship title, the players on Warren De La Salle Collegiate’s boys basketball team understood a target would be on their backs entering the 2023 season.

Not just from their weekly Catholic High School League conference opponents, which held three teams in the MHSAA top 10 in Division 1 with Detroit U-D Jesuit (sixth), Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice (first), and Orchard Lake St. Mary’s (ninth), but also getting every team’s best night in and night out as the returning champions.

After defeating St. Mary’s during their road to a state title last season, De La Salle would fall to St. Mary’s 55-44 in the quarterfinals of the MHSAA state tournament on March 21 at University of Detroit Mercy, ending their 2023 season.

De La Salle and St. Mary’s were deadlocked at 39 in the fourth quarter, but St. Mary’s was able to pull See DLS on page 6A

Residents concerned about accidents at 11 Mile and Hoover

WARREN — If you have traveled through the East 11 Mile Road and Hoover Road intersection and have been delayed by an accident, you are not alone.

At a recent Warren City Council meeting a Warren resident expressed concern regarding the frequency of accidents at this intersection.

“The collisions are there constantly,” said resident Jeff Dikowski during the audience participation portion of the March 28 meeting. “We just had a major one that hit a semi and broke the gas tank open. We had diesel fuel all over the intersection.”

Dikowski gave more specific examples.

“If I say the back lights, I mean the ones just before the turnarounds both east and west. Those turn green before the lights at Hoover turn green. So, people are leaving that light full speed,” said Dikowski. “By the time they hit Hoover, they’re hitting the in-

tersection, which it’s green for them, legally, even though it just turned green for them.

People going north and south are blowing the light, trying to beat it.

“Make both lights green and red at the same time, and you’ll probably prevent 90% of the accidents in that intersection,” Dikowski said.

The city, county and state government agencies were later contacted for comment.

Asked if adjusting the signals was a viable remedy, Warren City Engineer Tina Gapshes said, “This is the first time I heard that concern (about accidents at 11 Mile and Hoover). I know there’s a lot of accidents in the area.

“Traffic signals in the city of Warren are maintained and controlled by the Macomb County Department of Roads,” Gapshes said.

De La Salle coach Gjon Djokaj had high praise for McKenney, who buried crucial free throws down the stretch in the fourth quarter to help St. Mary’s pull away.

“We were prepared to play anyone who came out of that region, and it happened to be Orchard Lake, who probably has the best player in the state regardless of class,” Djokaj said. “He kind of showed out the other night.”

While a bitter pill to swallow, De La Salle’s ability to overcome adversity showcased a positive outlook for the 2024 season.

Losing a key senior starter to start the season to go along with one of the most difficult schedules in the state, De La Salle battled through the season to the best of their ability, utilizing their young talent.

“We put together one of the toughest schedules in the state, and we were able to really continue to be a great defensive team through wins and losses,” Djokaj said. “We hung our heads on defense, and we continued to work and get better. Obviously, losing Triston (Nichols) in the beginning of the year created a role change for every single player on our team really late into the offseason, so it took us a little time to establish those things and get comfortable in them.”

Losing Nichols, a dynamic senior guard, was a nearly impossible feat to overcome, especially after having the task of filling the shoes of all-state guard Tamario Adley, but De La Salle’s seniors shined when the team needed them most.

Led by a pair of all-state seniors in Michael Sulaka and Nino Smith, De La Salle cruised to a 17-9 record this season, finishing third in the conference.

Senior Adam Broski, Carson Kraiza, and Jack Yanachik all provided reliable leadership as well for De La Salle.

Djokaj said Sulaka and Smith’s growth this year was pivotal to their success.

“He’s (Smith) a great all-around point guard, a defensive-minded point guard, and a great facilitator that can play at a lot of different paces, and Mikey (Sulaka) is a really young big man who is just scratching the surface of how good he could become,” Djokaj said. “He’s one of the hardest workers I’ve ever been around. He’s literally a gym rat. Once he gets to the next level, he’s really going to blossom into a big-time talent.”

While their on-the-court presence was an immeasurable impact, their contributions

to the underclassmen not only supported De La Salle this season, but will leave a mark in the 2024 and 2025 season, specifically for sophomores Phoenix Glassnor, Armoni Portis and Braeden Holder.

Due to injuries this season, Glassnor, Portis and Holder found themselves maturing quicker than expected as Glassnor and Portis graced the starting lineup and Holder became a reliable six-man option.

Glassnor said the seniors helped him grow throughout the season.

“They played a huge role, especially Nino (Smith) for sure,” Glassnor said. “He’s kind of taken me under his wing and made me a better person not just on the court but also off the court.”

Glassnor, Portis, Holder, and junior Nnaemeka Ikechi, who manned the frontcourt this season for De La Salle, will be called upon next year as leaders for a young De La Salle basketball squad.

Ikechi, who sat out last year due to transferring, was finally able to solidify a role with his new squad, and will look to be the senior leader the team will rely on alongside juniors Nicholas Speiser and Tyler Thompson.

Djokaj said the team plans to channel its culture more as the offseason nears.

“Leaning into this year, I think we need to go back to our roots a little bit more,” Djokaj said. “As a coach, focus on the culture a little bit more. With this group, there’s so many new faces and so many new parts. Building the team, I think it’s important for them to go through that growing phase again. From a basketball aspect, just continue to keep the work ethic and the skill development so we can figure out what these kids do best and put them in the best position to be successful.”

While the sophomores and juniors look to continue the foundation the senior class helped build, it’s important to showcase the importance of the 2023 senior class.

Impactful juniors on a history-making state title last season, the seniors continued to help elevate the De La Salle basketball program each year, facing one of the toughest schedules in the state.

As they bid their final farewell to De La Salle, Djokaj said this will be a senior class that will always have a special place with him.

“When I first got the job, they were all sophomores, and we had great senior leadership to mentor them,” Djokaj said. “They were just really hungry, really involved in all aspects of our program, and they just hit the ground running. They were really sponges when it came to learning our system and our culture, and they just kind of carried that each year making it better and stronger. The success that they’ve had over the last three years is not a surprise to anyone because of their hard work and dedication.”

Boike appeals Judge Gatti’s opinion

FUN AT THE WARREN CIVIC CENTER LIBRARY WARREN — The Warren Civic Center Library will host

WARREN — Gary Boike, who sued Warren City Council President Patrick Green claiming Green had exceeded his term limits on City Council and that Boike should fill the remainder of the term, filed a claim of appeal on April 11.

The appeal is to review Judge Julie Gatti’s opinion and order of Mar. 28. Gatti ruled Green was not in violation of the term limits and could continue his service on the Warren City Council.

Boike was the third highest at-large votegetter in the previous election. According to the Warren city charter, this means if either of the two at-large seats are vacated more than 40 days prior to a regular election, Boike would fill the seat.

“Boike has started an appeal to review Judge Gatti’s opinion,” said Lawrence Garcia, attorney for Boike. “I don’t know when the transcript will be ready, but we hope to fast track this appeal. As you know, the partial term that Mr. Boike is fighting for is shrinking every day.”

“PAWS to Read,” with Desmond, the library’s newest certified therapy dog, every Wednesday in April from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The program gives new or struggling readers an opportunity to read to Desmond. According to Branch Librarian Lisa Martin, “The goal is to provide a nonjudgmental atmosphere in which kids can read without correction or interruption and learn not just to read, but to love reading as well.”

Children of all ages are welcome to read to Desmond, the 130-pound Newfypoo, who joined the library in the fall of 2022. His resume includes working with patients at Beaumont Hospital and students at various elementary schools.

Newfypoos are described as gentle giants, sweet, patient, lovable and great with kids by the American Kennel Club.

This program will be held in the storytime room at the Civic Center Library inside Warren City Hall, located two blocks east of Van Dyke Avenue and one-quarter mile north of 12 Mile Road. No registration is required.

Hookah lounge closes after three shootings

WARREN — The Phoenix Hookah Lounge, located in a strip mall on East Eight Mile Road near Dequindre Road, will reportedly close for good and become an urgent care facility after the club’s third nonfatal shooting.

The latest shooting happened on April 9.

According to Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer, the owner is a businessman who lives in Oakland County and is not there for the day-to-day operations. He reportedly owns other urgent care establishments, and this would be a better fit for the community.

“I met with the owner this morning and we had a very good conversation,” said Dwyer. “He was very understanding and said he is closing it down; he is not going to reopen.”

Suzanne Vanderbilt leaves her mark on Cadillac’s Celestiq

WARREN — Named after the pioneering designer Suzanne Vanderbilt, who blazed new trails at General Motors Co. and throughout the automotive industry, Cadillac House at Vanderbilt is currently under construction on GM’s Global Technical Center campus in Warren.

Vanderbilt’s unique, maverick, aheadof-her-time spirit is embodied in the facility that dons her name, which will combine a one-of-a-kind, concierge client experience for Cadillac’s first all-electric luxury sedan, the Celestiq.

Among only a few women in the automotive design industry, Vanderbilt joined GM Design in 1955 and worked in the Cadillac studio. She made her mark early designing the 1958 Eldorado Seville coupe, called Baroness, and the 1958 Cadillac Saxony convertible.

Implementing safety with style and functionality, she secured two patents while at GM: inflatable back support for the seat, providing additional support in the lumbar area for occupants; and a safety switch for the automobile instrument panel, which reduced injuries from protruding objects in the dashboard. Both patents were assigned to GM. She also secured a safety helmet patent, which was assigned to American Safety Equipment.

Vanderbilt, a New York native, earned a Bachelor of Arts in industrial design from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and a Master of Fine Arts from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills.

According to GM, Vanderbilt provided mentorship to other women designers before she retired in 1977.

The Global Technical Center campus was deemed a National Historic Landmark in 2014 because of its midcentury design.

MMSA student to attend Ivy League school

WARREN — After receiving offers from 16 different colleges, Michigan Math and Science Academy senior Shamrin Salam has accepted an invitation to attend Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Harvard, known as one of the most prestigious universities in the world, is recognized for its rigorous academic programs, distinguished faculty and low acceptance rate.

Regina students take on challenges in various competitions

WARREN/LANSING — This school year, Regina High School students have been flexing their skills in various clubs that included outside competitions.

The high school’s Robotics Team No. 7188, The Saddlebots, participated during

the Troy Athens FIRST Robotics Competition tournament March 25-26, finishing No. 28 out of 42 teams.

In other Regina news, the school’s forensics team enjoyed a successful season through the support of coaches Julie CashSharp (Regina Class of 1976), Vivian Sawicki and moderator/former forensics state champion Harry Totten.

Students Audrey Schena, Aubriana Scott and Madison Ezell qualified to attend the national competition set for May 2628 in Louisville, Kentucky. Student Sydney Desjardines will compete as an alternate at nationals if needed.

Lastly, Regina’s newly formed mock trial team competed against 12 other teams at their regional competition March 4 and was selected to advance to Michigan’s state tournament in Lansing on March 18. The event was organized by the Michigan Center for Civic Education, which helped facilitate the competition and gathered attorneys and judges as competition judges.

Presentation highlights students learning, engaged

WARREN — The April 10 Fitzgerald Public Schools Board of Education meeting gave district officials a closer look at various programs impacting students.

Westview Lower Elementary School Principal Rebecca Akins gave a PowerPoint presentation that emphasized various academic and enrichment programs at the school. Akins was joined by special education teacher Brittany Grashik and reading specialist/coach Lisa Wisdom.

One program making an impact is WIN, which stands for What I Need. Each student has a WIN group that meets for 35 minutes every day where they focus on specific reading intervention instruction based on the students’ NWEA scores.

NWEA, which stands for Northwest Evaluation Association, is a nonprofit organization that assesses students in various academic studies. Westview’s WIN program helps teachers monitor the students’ growth and allows them to move into a different WIN group based on their progress.

The Westview Gold Goal bell initiative, in which students proudly ring the gold bell in the school office when they’ve met certain goals, has been popular.

“We also have our ‘bright student awards’ that our teachers are doing in the classrooms, taking pictures of kids that are achieving their goals with multiplication facts,” Akins said.

Westview continues to offer monthly Multi-tiered System of Supports meetings.

MTSS is a comprehensive framework comprising a collection of research-based strategies designed to meet the individual needs of students. The purpose of MTSS is to address the needs of the whole child, including cognitively, physically, behaviorally, socially and emotionally.

“The monthly MTSS meetings help our students who may be struggling academically or behaviorally,” Akins said. “We also have multiple parent meetings that take

place throughout the year, so we have those support pieces in place.”

The school also has an active student council and Eco Crew; both chaired by Wisdom.

Grashik is a coach for two of the school’s running programs: Stride and Girls on the Run, which operate in partnership through the YMCA. She shared details of both with the school board.

STRIDE, which stands for Success, Teamwork, Respect, Inspiration, Determination and Excellence in Character, is a fitness and running program for boys in grades 3 through 5. Girls on the Run is a physicalactivity-based positive youth development program for girls in grades 3 through 8 that teaches life skills through interactive lessons and running games.

Also at the meeting, Fitzgerald High School and Chatterton Middle School Chinese language teacher and Multicultural Club sponsor Katie Van Gorder provided an update regarding the multicultural showcase held last month at the high school. According to Van Gorder’s presentation, the Fitzgerald Foundation for Educational Advancement provided funding to pay for food offered at the event.

Students were encouraged to participate in the multicultural showcase to display their ethnic backgrounds. There were students who sang or danced, and the evening also included a fashion show.

Organized in 1987, the FFEA was founded by Fitzgerald alumni, present and former school board members, and interested community members. The Foundation provides financial support for educational programs and projects not available through the school district’s operating budget.

Prosecutor: Grocery clerk hit with frozen fish, suspect charged

WARREN — A 60-year-old Warren man is facing a misdemeanor assault charge after he allegedly used a frozen fish to assault a grocery clerk at a Warren market on April 2.

According to a release from the office of Macomb County Prosecuting Attorney Peter Lucido, the incident happened at the Desi Fruit Market at Nine Mile Road and Masch Avenue at 7:13 p.m. The fish counter at the market reportedly closed at 7 p.m. because of the Ramadan holiday.

According to the release, the fish clerk explained why they were closed to the suspect who came to the counter after hours. The suspect became angry when he could not receive service and began to hit the clerk with a four-pound frozen hilsa fish, which is a type of herring.

The victim was transported to a local hospital.

The suspect, MD Jobul Hussain, was charged with one count of aggravated assault, a one-year misdemeanor. He was arraigned in the 37th District Court in Warren and given a $5,000 personal bond on April 3.

“I never thought I’d have to say this, but if you assault someone with a fish in our county you will be prosecuted. A frozen fish is dangerous if you use it to hit someone on the head,” Lucido said.

A pretrial hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on April 27 before Judge John Chmura in the 37th District Court.

Hussain’s attorney of record, Michael Hennigan, was not available for comment.

Because of global supply chain issues, there are many invasive species that have spread into Michigan. As a result, these invasive species take nutrients from the environment that Michigan-based plants would use to thrive, taking over that part of the environment and changing the soil culture.

“The garlic mustard green right now is a huge invasive,” Gadulka said. “It is a great edible. It is similar in flavor to horseradish or wasabi, with a little bit of spice to it. It’s one of those (plants) that, if you have a little bit in your yard, you will never get rid of it, and the best thing to do is eat it.”

Edible landscaping can also improve the nonedible landscaping in the area around it.

“There are a number of edible plants, herbs and vegetables whose flowers are beneficial for different kinds of pollinators and good insects,” said David Lowenstein, a consumer horticulture extension educator for the Michigan State University Extension.

“That can not only help the edible plants but any wildflowers or other ornamental plants you have by attracting natural predators.”

arly spring is an important time to start planting seeds that will bud and bloom throughout the warmer months. Some local residents have decided to incorporate landscaping that is not only ornamental but also edible.

Growing edible landscaping at home has several benefits, including its economic and environmental impacts. This kind of landscaping can be taken to various different levels and include a range of different plants.

Rochester Hills resident and Sylvan Table Executive Chef Christopher Gadulka utilizes edible landscaping at work and at home. Sylvan Table in Sylvan Lake is a farmto-table restaurant where they grow produce right outside of the dining area.

Gadulka was immersed in the culture of edible landscaping on a trip to Switzerland, where he noticed that a majority of the “lawns” were actually community gardens where functional plants grew for people to harvest. Even the wildflowers they grew were edible.

When he returned home, instead of growing traditional ornamental plants in his yard, Gadulka began planting edible plants such as marigolds, ostrich ferns and ramps.

One of his favorite edible landscape examples is the dandelion. These plants are 100% edible, as long as they are not sprayed with any chemicals.

Gadulka said dandelions are once again a prime example of edible landscaping’s economic benefits. They are known to grow plentifully, and they are free. By letting dandelions grow, residents can harvest them for salads, teas and more.

Rick Rigutto, the farm manager at Sylvan Farm, shared the benefits from a business standpoint of keeping food production as close as possible to where it is eaten.

“The closer that remains, the more dollars stay in the local community,” Rigutto said. “Working with your local farms within your region and in your state helps keep those dollars recirculating closer to home.”

While the idea of incorporating edible landscaping may seem overwhelming to some residents, Rigutto said the best way to begin is by starting small and building from there.

Gadulka suggested starting by creating a rain garden. This is a type of garden that has native perennials and shrubs planted in a depression on the ground in order to soak up and store stormwater runoff.

Several edible flowers and plants can be planted in these rain gardens, including as-

paragus, rhubarb and strawberries.

Lowenstein also expressed the importance of starting off small. He said there are many microgreens that are great, easy-togrow edible plants to start with.

“Plant what you think you would like to eat, or what your neighbors or friends would like to eat,” Lowenstein said.

intersection out of a total of 3,479 in Warren. In 2022, there were 82 crashes out of a total of 3,993. To date in 2023, there have been 23 crashes out of 956.

“As you will see, the numbers at this intersection represent a low total of 2% of our overall crashes in the city of Warren,” stated Sgt. John Gajewski of the Warren Police Department.

Although this is just 2% of the accidents, the numbers average nearly two accidents per week. This could be very concerning to people who live or travel frequently in this area.

Cadillac House at Vanderbilt sits in a single-story building, with a glass curtain wall displaying expansive views of the campus and lake. The building showcases Saarinen’s modern style with travertine and terrazzo slabs, wood panels and stainless steel details. The 36-by-10-foot sculptural screen of glimmering gold, designed by Harry Bertoia, a Detroit-based artist and designer, is one of the building’s most notable features.

The facility will be the site of the exclusive concierge design services for the Celestiq.

Then they can either pay a $100 filing fee (which the majority of candidates opt to do) or submit a nominating petition with the appropriate number of signatures, determined by a percentage of all the votes cast in the city, or district, for the office of Michigan secretary of state in the most recent general election.

In the last general election on Nov. 8, 2022, a total of 49,510 registered voters cast ballots for Michigan secretary of state in Warren. To submit a nominating petition for any of the at-large positions on the ballot this year — mayor, city clerk, city treasurer or the two at-large City Council seats — a candidate would need a number of signatures equal to no less than 1% of 49,510 (495 signatures) and no greater than 4% (1,980 signatures), according to the clerk.

For those running for one of the district City Council seats, the number required is based on how many people voted for Michigan secretary of state in that district, using the same 1% and 4 % thresholds. For example, in the last general election in District 3, 10,831 voters cast ballots for secretary of state, meaning no fewer than 108 signatures and no greater than 433 signatures would be needed, according to Buffa.

According to the Michigan Department of State Bureau of Elections, a candidate can be disqualified for making false statements on a signed affidavit of identity, late filing fees and unpaid fines.

What’s on the ballot?

In Warren’s “strong mayor” form of government, the mayor is the administrative and executive leader of the city, according to the charter. The mayor appoints officials to lead the city’s various departments and appoints members to the city’s boards and commissions. The mayor’s administration must also prepare the city budget and present it to the City Council.

Former Warren Mayor Mark Steenbergh, who served as the city’s top administrator from 1995 to 2007, offered some insight into the job of mayor.

When asked what he found most rewarding, Steenbergh said, “During my may-

orship, I earned their (Warren residents’) trust with the redevelopment of the Tank Plant at first and that allowed me to have their trust to move forward and clean up the area around City Hall. I thought right at the core of the city we did a lot of good work that is good for the citizenry for a long, long time. Those are the big things.”

Asked what the most challenging or difficult part of being mayor was, Steenbergh said, “Recognizing the needs of the city and trying to pull the project together is the thing that challenges you. You have to get City Council people on board because they control the money. And you had to prove to them what was good, and you had to prove to the citizenry what you were doing was worthwhile and good and in their best interest.”

The salary for the mayor of Warren is $126,642, as stated in the city’s adopted budget for the 2022-2023 fiscal year.

The Warren city clerk oversees elections and voting and is responsible for certifying the results. The clerk serves as the city’s official record keeper of documents.

The city treasurer collects, allocates and is responsible for the safekeeping of all city revenue. This includes property taxes, special assessments, fees, licenses and water revenues. The Treasurer’s Office acts as the tax collection agent for all taxing units located within Warren, including the millages of six school districts and the county.

The salary of both the city clerk and treasurer is $92,923.

The Warren City Council is a legislative body of seven members, with five members representing each of the five districts throughout Warren and two representing the city at-large. Council members must live in the district in which they represent.

The City Council elects its own officers, but the highest vote-getter in the race for the two at-large City Council seats becomes the mayor pro tem.

The council controls the money by having final approval of the city budget. They approve expenditures and ordinances and settle lawsuits by majority vote.

Council members are required to attend City Council meetings at the Warren Community Center the second and fourth Tuesday of each month.

same salary of $31,412.

Many who run for the City Council do so with a mission to help the city and its residents.

Scott Stevens served three terms on the Warren City Council from 2017 to 2019.

“The most rewarding thing about being on City Council was being able to serve the

residents to the best of my ability,” Stevens said.

He added, “It is disappointing when Council members are out for themselves.”

On April 22, Weirdsville Records will have 20% off used merchandise. Taking it one beat further, patrons can groove to the vibe of Record Store Day with live music beginning at 1 p.m. from two bands: the Slot Rods and the Fabulous Hen House Boys.

Several local record store owners predict this year’s big seller will be Taylor Swift’s “Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions.”

“Anything Taylor Swift does will be popular,” said Henry Pardike, who manages UHF Records at 512 S. Washington Ave., in downtown Royal Oak. Pardike also predicts “Live With The BBC Philharmonic Orchestra” by The 1975 will be popular.

“That’s one of the biggest pop bands right now,’ Pardike said. “A new Beach House EP is coming out and the Mars Volta has a reissue of an EP of theirs.”

According to Pardike, Record Store Day was scaled down in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it came back “to a normal session” in 2022.

“It’s an extremely busy day, but it’s also a fun day,” Pardike said. “Many people are looking for very specific things. A lot of (titles) are limited releases. To cut down on flippers, people can’t buy multiple copies of anything.”

Some music fans travel for hours to shop.

“There are people that come down from Traverse City, Alpena and Sault Ste. Marie,” Pardike said. “Most people make a day of it.”

Pardike believes vinyl LPs made a resurgence because “everyone loves music.”

“People want the artifact,” he said.

“They’re not just listening to the music on their phones. They look at the linear notes.”

Some take the event so seriously, they line up hours before the stores open. That has been the case at Village Vinyl, located at 5972 Chicago Road in Warren. The store will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 22 with lots of giveaways throughout the day.

“We’re running 20% off selected items and 10% off everything in the store excluding the Record Store Day items. It’s a very exciting time. It generates interest. It generates business and lets people know that record stores still exist,” said Village Vinyl owner John Lehl, who expects to receive titles from the Ramones, Motörhead, The Cure and others for Saturday.

“We’ve ordered from different vendors and different distributors. The big one this year is Taylor Swift,” Lehl said. “Every generation is buying records now, even little kids.

Listening to a record is an experience. Rather than hitting a button, a lot of people that like vinyl and music can look at pictures and read linear notes.”

Lehl has witnessed many performers become fashionable again based on how the music is getting out there. The 2018 film “Bohemian Rhapsody,” starring Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, is a prime example.

“When they put the Queen movie out, there was a lot of interest,” Lehl said. “With ‘Stranger Things,’ Kate Bush is selling again.”

People also stock up on music when an artist dies, as was the case when fans mourned the death of guitar icon Jeff Beck in January.

The City of Center Line Ordains ARTICLE III. - DOGS AND CATS Sec. 10-56. - License required; application.

(1) Any person or entity owning, keeping, harboring, or having custody of any dog over four months of age within the City shall obtain a license for each such dog as provided herein.

(2) A dog license shall be issued for only a dog that has a certificate current rabies vaccination from a licensed veterinarian, except when a veterinarian states in writing that the dog should not be vaccinated for medical reasons and indicates when the dog can be vaccinated.

(3) Application for a license shall be made within 30 days after obtaining a dog over four months of age, except that this requirement shall not apply to a nonresident keeping a dog within the municipality for no longer than 30 days.

(4) The county chief animal control officer shall issue licenses as provided by MCL 287.274. License fees shall be established from time to time by the county board of commissioners.

(5) Failure to comply with the licensing requirements of this section will result in the imposition of such late fees and penalties as may be established from time to time by the county board of commissioners in addition to penalties established by state law or City ordinances.

(6) No person or entity shall allow a licensed dog outside of the person’s permanent or temporary residence without its license. No person or entity shall use any license for any animal other than the animal for which it was issued.

(7) The licensing or registration requirements of this chapter regarding any dog determined to be vicious shall supersede the requirements of this section insofar as they conflict.

“This is where the Lord wanted me. It’s where I am meant to be,” White said. “I love being with people, both the volunteers and the shoppers. My first job at age 16 was in a retail store, Shoppers Fair. By the time that place went out of business, I worked at all the departments.”

Donated items that are clean and in working condition are accepted during business hours. Any donations the store can’t use are redistributed to other nonprofit organizations. Proceeds from sales are donated to

various local causes, including the Macomb County Rotating Emergency Shelter Team.

Store profits also have assisted families in need.

Money also will be used toward the upcoming “Spring Serve 2023” oil change program. The church is offering oil changes for $5 each from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 6.

community is welcome to shop inside the brightly lit and well-organized secondhand store, located at 27300 Hoover Road. Shoppers don’t have to be members of the church to come and browse around.

The Thrift Closet first opened in the late 2000s. In 2015, sisters Joanne White and Kaye Hill took it over. About 50 people on average find bargains at the Thrift Closet every week.

“It started as a small area in the hall and we’ve grown over the years,” White said.

The Thrift Closet is stocked with men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, evening wear, dishes, bed linens, towels, small kitchen appliances, glassware, craft supplies and greeting cards. There are also plenty of toys, books, Bibles, picture frames, lamps and more.

“You never know what you’re going to find,” White said. “We try to keep in mind the low prices so people are capable of providing special things for their families. My sister felt that was an important philosophy.”

Because of medical issues, Hill is unable to currently assist, but White still leads the

Kathy Hanselman, for example, works behind the scenes preparing the merchandise to sell. On April 5, the Center Line resident sat at a desk carefully counting puzzle pieces and game pieces.

“We have a good time. Everyone lifts each other’s burdens,” said Hanselman, also a member of the church’s prayer team. “I enjoy this very much. I think it’s wonderful.”

Hanselman is the widow of David Hanselman, who served on the Center Line City Council for 28 years. He also was Center Line mayor from 2009 until he died in 2015.

“I miss him but I’m going to see him again,” Hanselman said.

Hanselman has remained active in the community. She plays piano at the regular Center Line Lions Club meetings. In addition, she and Jackie Lancaster will serve as prayer coordinators for Center Line’s National Day of Prayer observance, set for noon on May 4 outside by the flagpole at the David W. Hanselman Municipal Complex on 10 Mile Road west of Van Dyke Avenue.

“She had a generous heart. She had been here so long and brought stability,” volunteer Valorie Fisher said. “A lot of customers miss her.”

The Food Pantry

In another part of the basement, a separate group of volunteers — including Beth Rogensues and Frank Rogensues-Campos — run the Woodside Bible Church Food Pantry from noon to 4 p.m. Mondays and from 9 a.m. until noon Fridays.

There are no income guidelines in which to receive food, but recipients must fill out a form for the church files. Volunteers then take those in need through the Food Pantry to select meats, cereal, soups, canned fruits and vegetables, pastas, toothpaste and more.

“We try to give you one of everything,” Food Pantry Director Beverly Taylor said, adding you don’t have to be a church member to receive a donation.

Taylor has been volunteering for seven years. It all started when a former pastor stopped by the church one day to donate

food to people coming in. Knowing he needed help, Taylor offered to volunteer.

“I told him ‘I will help you out,’” she said. “This has been such a blessing. I love it.”

Taylor and the volunteers begin each day with a prayer. Anyone who comes into the food pantry is welcome to pray with the group, but it is not mandatory.

The Food Pantry receives 2,000 pounds of food from the Macomb Food Program the first and third Wednesday of each month.

Volunteers are always needed to help bring the food downstairs.

Vets Returning Home, in Roseville, and Vietnam Veterans of America in Clinton Township, donate food, as do local Boy Scout troops. The annual U.S. Postal Service’s Stamp Out Hunger program, set for May 13 this year, also is a big boost.

“I am so counting on that,” Taylor said.

Volunteers are always needed to help during the Food Pantry hours. That includes assisting guests, marking items, stocking shelves, sanitizing carts and cleaning. If interested, contact Beverly Taylor at btaylor306@hotmail.com or (586) 872-6571.
