Police arrest man for allegedly threatening Forest Park Elementary in Eastpointe

EASTPOINTE — Desmond Jamal Parks, 29, of Detroit, was arraigned April 11 in the 38th District Court for allegedly making threats against Forest Park Elementary School.

At approximately 8:10 a.m. April 10, Eastpointe police were dispatched to Forest Park Elementary School for a report of death threats being made. According to a press release from the Eastpointe Police Department, Parks allegedly called the school and stated that he Parks was going to “shoot the school up.”

Parks also threatened to shoot students if the school didn’t keep them on the bus, according to the press release. At 8:54 a.m., he allegedly called the school again, stating he had shot his girlfriend in Eastpointe.

Officers arrived and placed the school into lockdown. They then stood by until parents were able to pick up their children at nearby Eastpointe Middle School.

A

group of East Detroit High School graduates have banded together to help carry on the school’s musical legacy.

About a year ago, 16 EDHS graduates from various years reconnected to form the ShamRock Jazz Orchestra. They took their name from the school’s mascot, the shamrock.

The band came together last year for two reasons. The first is to make music, and the second is to help support the music program at the school, which is now called Eastpointe High School.

One way the ShamRock Jazz Orchestra is doing that is by holding an instrument drive from 4 to 8 p.m. April 20 at Infinity Hall, located at 16650 E. 14 Mile Road in Fraser. Anyone who has a used instrument they no longer use or need can drop it off at the hall.

The ShamRock Jazz Orchestra members will then donate the instruments to the high school’s music program.

RECORD STORE DAY CARRIES THE RIGHT TUNE

METRO DETROIT — Cue those turntables: It’s time to kick out the jams.

On April 22, local independent record stores will open up shop for Record Store Day 2023.

Record Store Day, held internationally, was launched in 2007 to give employees and customers the chance to gather and celebrate the independent record store culture. In addition, record companies release new music or re-release albums on vinyl not available elsewhere. That could include picture discs and LPs from bands no longer together.

“Record Store Day started out when vinyl was making a comeback,” said Davey Taylor, who with wife Lisa Taylor owns Weirdsville Records at 61 Macomb Place in Mount Clemens. “It’s about helping the mom-andpop shops. Sometimes you get a lot of new customers that have never been to the store or new people who just got a record player.”

Police investigating shooting that left 1 dead at Roseville hotel

ROSEVILLE — One person is dead after a shooting April 9 that allegedly stemmed from a domestic incident at a Roseville hotel.

At approximately 9:25 p.m., Roseville police responded to a report of a shooting at the Victory Inn Hotel, 31811 Little Mack Ave. Upon arrival, police found a 30-year-old Marysville man who had sustained a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Officers provided aid to the man until the Roseville Fire Department arrived and took over care. The Fire Department transported the man to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect, a 28-year-old Clinton Township man, contacted police immediately after the shooting and was cooperative, according to a press release from the Roseville Police Department. Officers reportedly were able to recover the weapon

used in the shooting from the suspect, and he was placed under arrest.

As of April 10, he was being lodged in the Macomb County Jail.

According to the press release, based on preliminary information, officers believe the incident stemmed from a domestic disturbance between the Marysville man and a woman. The suspect then reportedly became involved in a confrontation with the Marysville man, which led to the Marysville man being shot.

Roseville police said in the press release that the investigation is ongoing. In an update April 11, Roseville police said that the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office had authorized charges of second-degree murder and felony firearm against the Clinton Township man. The department could not be reached to find out if the arraignment had taken place.

EASTPOINTE — As chairman of the Michigan Senate Pre-K-12 Appropriations Subcommittee, Sen. Darrin Camilleri, D-Trenton, has been visiting school districts around the state to determine their individual needs.

On April 7, the state official toured Eastpointe High School to discuss the status of the district, including finances, infrastructure and academics.

Participants can choose between a 5-kilometer run/walk or a 1-mile run/walk. Registration will begin at 9 a.m., and the races will begin at 10 a.m.

The event is named in memory of Manfreda, a Roseville High School student who died suddenly from an arterial abnormality in his heart in 2015. Manfreda was a member of the school’s cross country, track and wrestling teams.

Event proceeds will help fund scholarships that the foundation provides for graduating seniors.

Last year’s event raised $4,600 and provided four scholarships.

Eastpointe, Roseville celebrate National Library Week April 23-29

EASTPOINTE/ROSEVILLE — In recognition of National Library Week April 23-29, the Eastpointe Memorial Library will hold raffles during the week for children and adults. Patrons can enter to win at the circulation desk.

In addition, the “A Stitch in Time” Fiber Arts Club will meet at 2 p.m. April 26 at the Eastpointe Memorial Library, located at 15875 Oak Ave. Participants can bring their knitting, crocheting, or any other craft involving yarn or thread.

The library will host a speaker from the Detroit Institute of Art’s Behind the Seen program to present “From Camelot to Kent State: Pop Art, 1960–1975,” at 6:30 p.m. April 27. On April 27, children ages 4 to 12 are invited to read with the library’s tail waggin’ tutor, Prescott. The program will begin at 5 p.m. Children can practice 15 minutes reading aloud from a book of their choice to Prescott the therapy dog. Registration is required for a 15-minute reading time slot. Registration will open one week prior to the event.

STATEWIDE — A new study reveals that Michigan is the safest state for truck drivers in the U.S. The Simplex Group, a premier service provider for America’s trucking industry, analyzed 2022 data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The study measured the percentage of large trucks involved in fatal crashes in 2022 compared to all fatal vehicle crashes per state to declare the state with the least percentage of truck incidents.

The study revealed that Michigan is the safest state for truck drivers on the road, as 4.72% of its fatal crashes involved large trucks. The state recorded 1,567 vehicles involved in life-threatening crashes, and 74 large trucks were recorded by the NHTSA. “This research offers an interesting insight into which states are nearing the goal of making roads safer for truck drivers. It also highlights the states that might need to consider implementing more truck-safe road systems for drivers,” a Simplex spokesperson said in a prepared statement. “According to the NHTSA, there have been 4,842 large trucks involved in fatal crashes in the past year, so this study could alert truck drivers to better prepare when journeying in these particular states.”

Pianist Chris Michaels, Class of 1980, and guitarist Dave Sell, who graduated in 1979, are credited with starting the orchestra.

The idea first came to Sell after he attended his 40-year class reunion. The gathering brought back plenty of memories for Sell, who now lives in California but returns to Michigan regularly to visit family.

“We had a blast getting together. I left the evening thinking it could be cool to form a jazz band,” Sell said. “My circle of friends was rooted in band. Most of my friends in high school were in band.”

As a teen, Sell played guitar in the jazz band and French horn when he performed with the concert and symphony bands. Sell and many of the SJO members studied under band director Alfred Marco.

The SJO members span from the Class of 1957 to the Class of 2006. There are trumpeters, trombonists and saxophone players.

The band completes its sound with Gabe Cannistraci on lead vocals, Chuck Bartells on bass and drummer Doug Vinson keeping a steady beat.

On stage, the musicians put their own spin on songs from the ’50s through the ’80s by artists including Chicago, Stevie Wonder, the Beatles and Led Zeppelin. The orchestra also sneaks in staples like Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me To The Moon” and “Bandstand Boogie,” which eventually became the theme song for “American Bandstand.”

“We write our own arrangements and arrange some of the classic rock material,” Sell said. “We found there are so many great classic numbers out there with horn sections.”

Things got pretty serious for the band after it performed a concert at the Magic Bag in Ferndale. The evening went over so well that the band booked another show at the Emerald Theatre in Mount Clemens and played to an appreciative crowd.

“People were on their feet cheering,” Sell said. “It was just great fun. The professionalism, the quality and the skill level in the orchestra is just phenomenal. We surprised ourselves how well we can play.”

Trumpeter Tom Dembeck, Class of 1976, was one of several alumni members who went on a tour at the high school back in January to check out the current band program.

“We really want to raise money for the school. We want to bring some excitement for the music program there,” the Warren resident said, remembering his own experience in band. “You learn musical skills. I made lifetime friends in the band program.”

Those skills are still sharp for the band members that reside all over metro Detroit, including Sterling Heights, Clinton Township and Macomb Township.

“A lot of guys went professional. Some are band directors,” Dembeck said. “The band is really having a lot of fun. We love being together. You have to work together as a group.”

The band member with the most years under his belt is Wally Fitz, a tenor sax player who graduated in 1957.

“Wally is 83 years old. He’s a heck of a player,” Sell said. “Wally, he’s the hit of the show because everybody knows him.”

The band members will be back on stage to perform a live benefit from 7 to 9 p.m. May 19 at the Eastpointe High School auditorium, 15501 Couzens Ave. in Eastpointe. Tickets cost $27 each; the seating is general admission. Many WRIF 101 FM listeners might recognize 1974 graduate George Baier, who will serve as emcee. He portrayed Dick the Bruiser on the radio station for many years.

ROSEVILLE — A jury found a Roseville man guilty April 4 of murdering his ex-fiancée’s mother and uncle in March 2022.

Following a five-day jury trial, Jerel McCrary, 32, of Roseville, was found guilty of shooting and killing his ex-fiancée’s mother, Cedic Fields, 63, and uncle, Kenny Burks, 57.

On Friday, March 25, 2022, McCrary sent a text message to his ex-fiancée, threatening to kill everyone she knows, according to a press release from the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.

Following the text, McCrary went to Fields’ home and video called his ex-fiancée, according to the press release. He then shot and McCrary killed Fields and Burks while on the call.

A jury trial began in front of Macomb County Circuit Court Judge James Maceroni March 28. Court records state that closing arguments took place in the afternoon April 4, and a guilty verdict was delivered that evening.

McCrary was found guilty on two counts of first-degree murder, which carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole, and two counts of felony firearm, a two-year felony. Sentencing is scheduled for 9 a.m. May 23 in front of Maceroni.

“This unspeakable act of violence is a total disregard for human lives,” Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said in a prepared statement. “This can only be described as the actions of a coward.”

At press time, McCrary’s attorney, Joan Ellerbusch Morgan, had not returned a request for comment.

Also present were Christopher Ford, constituent relations for Klinefelt’s office, and Jonathan Mason, deputy chief of staff for Camilleri.

“Some of the things you are talking about are things I want to tackle,” Camilleri said. “Over the next month or two, we’ll be introducing our proposals to really fix some of these problems.”

The group walked around the school with the auditorium as one of the first stops. Gibson said the district’s last bond issue provided funding for some upgrades in the auditorium, but lights and sound upgrades are needed. The school officials discussed the large size of the high school, which was built in 1929 and also had a building addition during its history.

“Can the district keep a school this size going? My concern is, and I know there is a lot of hesitation because of the historic nature and the alumni, if they need a newer school that’s smaller, that isn’t eating up so much energy,” Klinefelt said. “Jon, I think feels if we

can get the needed repairs, that we can sustain the school.

“I do think that’s a conversation for them to have internally; it’s not our business. But if they ever reached a point where they couldn’t sustain this, they can’t build a new school without help,” she told Camilleri. “I just wanted it on your mind because you’re going to be the chair of that for several years.”

“Our elementaries are in a great place,” Gibson said, but decisions about Eastpointe High School could be on the horizon. “Do we keep it? Is it viable? Do we make a community center? These are big, huge, crazy, wild decisions to make that have long-term implications.”

Klinefelt “We have a larger physical footprint in the community than we would need as a district, if you look at the space we have and the number of students we have,” Gruenberg said. “Is there a way we can get it classified as a historical building and possibly get some grants or funding from the state? That can do some of the repairs and we can do some.”

Klinefelt questioned what would happen to Eastpointe High School if the decision is made to build a new, more modern high school.

Several local record store owners predict this year’s big seller will be Taylor Swift’s “Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions.”

“Anything Taylor Swift does will be popular,” said Henry Pardike, who manages UHF Records at 512 S. Washington Ave., in downtown Royal Oak. Pardike also predicts “Live With The

BBC Philharmonic Orchestra” by The 1975 will be popular.

“That’s one of the biggest pop bands right now,’ Pardike said. “A new Beach House EP is coming out and the Mars Volta has a reissue of an EP of theirs.”

According to Pardike, Record Store Day was scaled down in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it came back “to a normal session” in 2022.

“It’s an extremely busy day, but it’s also a fun day,” Pardike said. “Many people are looking for very specific things. A lot of (titles) are limited releases. To cut down on flippers, people can’t buy multiple copies of anything.”

Some music fans travel for hours to shop.

“There are people that come down from Traverse City, Alpena and Sault Ste. Marie,” Pardike said. “Most people make a day of it.”

Pardike believes vinyl LPs made a resurgence because “everyone loves music.”

“People want the artifact,” he said.

“They’re not just listening to the music on their phones. They look at the linear notes.”

Some take the event so seriously, they line up hours before the stores open. That has been the case at Village Vinyl, located at 5972 Chicago Road in Warren. The store will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 22 with lots of giveaways throughout the day.

The long-standing Melodies and Memories, located at 23013 Gratiot Ave., in Eastpointe, is getting ready for Record Store Day 2023. According to the store’s Facebook page, Melodies and Memories will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 22. Giveaway bags will be passed out to the first 25 customers.

Found Sound, located at 234 W. Nine Mile Road in Ferndale, is another great spot to take in Record Store Day. Staff will open one hour earlier at 10 a.m. to meet the crowd.

Listening to a record is an experience. Rather than hitting a button, a lot of people that like vinyl and music can look at pictures and read linear notes.”

Lehl has witnessed many performers become fashionable again based on how the music is getting out there. The 2018 film “Bohemian Rhapsody,” starring Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, is a prime example.

“When they put the Queen movie out, there was a lot of interest,” Lehl said. “With ‘Stranger Things,’ Kate Bush is selling again.”

People also stock up on music when an artist dies, as was the case when fans mourned the death of guitar icon Jeff Beck in January.

Vinyl Village, celebrating its six-year anniversary this month, has become a staple for rock ‘n’ rollers.

Underdog story ends with national runner-up finish for MCC men’s hoops

“The mindset was to finish the job in terms of Danville and qualifying for the national tournament,” Nizam said. “We felt like last year, we had a top-five, top-six team in the country. It was about finishing; it was about getting back and finishing.”

Macomb earned the school’s first national tournament win in school history in a 72-59 first round victory over Chesapeake College on March 21 at Mary Miller Gymnasium in Danville behind freshman guard/ forward Aidan Rubio’s 25-point performance.

Rubio would follow up his impressive performance with a dominant 23-point showing, leading Macomb to a 66-63 win over No. 1 seed Davidson-Davie Community College in the quarterfinals on March 22.

Rubio, who led Macomb with 12 points per game and 56 blocks on the year, was a dynamic two-way guard and formed

a dominant backcourt with freshman guard Tamario Adley, who finished second in scoring with 11.6 points per game and who had a team-high 45 steals on the year.

“If I had to describe both those guys in one word, I’d say ‘special,’” Nizam said.

“Aidan and Tamario are both guys who could’ve averaged 20 points per game for us, but they both decided, ‘We’re going to play the right way, and it’s not going to be about an individual; we’re going to play good team basketball.’”

MACOMB COUNTY — The dynamic of community college sports is unlike any other.

With the majority of the Macomb Community College men’s basketball team’s roster planning to transfer to Division 1 or Division 2 basketball teams after their freshman year, there was a mutual understanding in the locker room that there was only one shot at a national championship together.

“We had a team meeting, and we all knew this was just a one-year thing,” freshman guard Juwan Maxey said. “We knew it was one year, so we had to go all-out to get to that next level. That one year kind of hurt because this team was the best team I’ve ever been a part of. The one-year aspect hurt a little bit, but it also made us better because we never took any game or practice for granted, and that made us better.”

Macomb (28-8) went into the National Junior College Athletic Association Division 2 National Championship Tournament in Danville, Illinois, having reached the tournament only once before — in 2016-17, when it lost 78-67 to Niagara County Community College in the first round — and they were ready to prove everyone who underestimated them wrong.

The stage was set for the 2023 team after Macomb last season won the school’s first Michigan Community College Athletic Association Championship, first MCCAA Eastern Conference Championship since 1992-93, and first outright Eastern Conference title since 1983-84.

scored 17 points while Rubio added 16 and a team-high nine rebounds to earn the 69-67 comeback win in overtime over the hometown favorites. Maxey, who led the team in three pointers made this season, added 13 points in the win.

Macomb was behind by double digits for the second consecutive game in the tournament, but a 17-3 run launched Macomb into the lead. Danville countered with a 12-2 run of its own to take a four point lead, but Macomb answered to take the game into overtime.

That’s when Macomb showcased the nation’s top-ranked defense, holding Danville scoreless the final three minutes in overtime.

Nizam, who previously coached at Roseville High School from 2017 to 2021, said the team’s steady structure was key to its defense, which held opponents to 61.6 points per game this season.

“We play hard,” Nizam said. “That’s part of why the defensive numbers were what they were. It’s a credit to our guys and a credit to our coaches for showing up every

single day and holding each other accountable and setting the standard high. One thing we talk about in our program, whether it be here or Roseville, is the foundation of your team is built from your first practice to your first game. You’re gonna have to stand on that foundation all year, even when it’s rocky, so you better make sure that foundation is strong.”

Riding a 10-game win streak into the national championship game against Milwaukee Area Technical College, Macomb fell short in an 86-65 loss on March 25.

Adley led the scoring with 12 points, while Daughtery tallied his second double-double of the tournament with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Linden Holder, who led the team in assists with 121 this season, and freshman forward Tymias Williams, who finished third in scoring on the year with 10 points per game, each added eight.

Adley, Rubio and Daughtery were named to the NJCAA Division 2 all-tournament team.

Nizam had high praise for his guys and Milwaukee Area Technical College head coach Randy Casey.

“He (Casey) had his team more prepared for that national championship than I personally did,” Nizam said. “They had been there for the last three or four years, and they had a lot of success doing it. We just ran out

of gas. Our guys played their hearts out all week, and they played their hearts out that night.”

While the players poured their hearts into the season, the Macomb coaching staff has proved itself to be one of, if not, the strongest in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association.

Nizam said coaches Kyle Lorentzen, Tyler Johnson and William Patsalis were key contributors to the team’s success.

“Those guys are the reason we had great practices,” Nizam said. “Those guys put the game plans together, and those guys are the reason our guys developed the way they did.

They deserve way more credit than they get.

Hopefully, I think they’re going to be stars in this profession as the years go by.”

Just weeks after the season’s end, Nizam has already begun the recruiting process for the 2023-2024 Macomb basketball team.

It’s a tough pill to swallow knowing the ride is over with a historic group as guys go their separate ways, but Nizam said they will always be part of the Macomb family no matter where they continue their careers.

“Our relationship with them doesn’t end when they take off the Macomb jersey for the last time; that’s really where it begins,” Nizam said. “You come to Macomb, and this is a lifetime commitment that we’re

“What do you do with this?” she asked.

“It should find some purpose,” Camilleri said. “It’s not a building that is in total disrepair that you have to get rid of.”

The group also made a stop at the high school pool, which has not been in use for over a year and needs about $400,000 worth of repairs. When in the cafeteria, the discussion turned to employee health care benefits and salaries. Gibson said the starting salary for a teacher is $45,000.

“The starting pay should be somewhere around $60,000,” DeVault said. “I know we’re not going to get there, but that should be the goal.”

“We really need the higher-paid teacher teaching here. Just the caliber of people we need to do this work,” Gibson said, adding, “Special education teachers are very hard to come by.”

Camilleri added that educators do expect a degree of financial security.

“The intent I think was that, if you knew you were going to be an educator, you weren’t going to be rich, but you could have a couple pieces of stability, retirement and health care,” Camilleri, 31, said. “You knew you would have those things at the end of your career and you would be OK. You knew it was something that would help your family.

“People who are my age are leaving the profession after five, 10 years, even fewer, deciding I can leave, I don’t have a pension, I don’t have this health care component,” Camilleri said. “I can go get any other job and use these intense skills that you get as an educator and make double the pay.”

Gruenberg brought up teachers having to pay 20% or a flat fee for medical insurance.

“If we’re going to prioritize teaching and we’re going to prioritize education, why wouldn’t we make that profession look a little more appealing than some of the others in the private sector,” Gruenberg said. “You can see there is a decline in a number of students that are actually going into the profession.”

The group also talked about schools of choice.

“Once (a district) started getting kids from other districts, their kids started leaving. You watched it go district by district by district, going east, going north. It’s a tear down of the communities,” Klinefelt said.

“The biggest problem with schools of choice, once the community is torn down, parents aren’t showing up to PTO meetings,” Klinefelt said. “They’re no longer volunteering at the local festivals. There is no connection to each other. It has an unbelievable impact on a community. That’s one of the things we’re fighting, because it’s that sense of community that makes kids successful.”

ATTENTION ROSEVILLE VOTERS: NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN: the Fraser Public School Special Election will be held in the City of Roseville, County of Macomb, State of Michigan on:

Shall the Fraser Public Schools, County of Macomb, State of Michigan, borrow the sum of not to exceed Fifty-Nine Million Dollars ($59,000,000) and issue its general obligation unlimited tax bonds, in one or more series, for the purpose of paying for the cost of the following projects: • Remodeling, equipping, re-equipping, furnishing, re-furnishing school buildings and other facilities to create a modern learning environment for students and enhancing health, safety, security, and energy conservation; • Acquiring and installing technology equipment and technology infrastructure in school buildings and other facilities; and • Preparing, developing and improving sites at school buildings and other facilities, erecting an addition to the High School stadium building and the purchase of school buses?

The estimated millage that will be levied to pay the proposed bonds in the first year is -0- mills for a -0- mill net increase over the annual debt millage levied in 2022; the estimated simple average annual millage that will be required to retire the bonds is 3.31 mills ($3.31 per $1,000 of taxable value); and the maximum number of years the bonds may be outstanding, exclusive of refunding, is not more than 25 years. If approved by the voters, the bonds will be guaranteed by the State under the School Bond Qualification and Loan Program (the “Program”). The School District currently has $67,100,000 of qualified bonds outstanding and approximately $7,462,308 of qualified loans outstanding under the Program. The School District expects to borrow from the Program to pay debt service on these bonds. The estimated total principal amount of additional borrowing is $23,047,411 and the estimated total interest thereon is $24,955,137. The estimated duration of the millage levy associated with that borrowing is 23 years and the estimated computed millage rate for such levy is 7.00 mills. The estimated computed millage rate required to be levied to pay the proposed bonds may change in the future based on changes in certain circumstances. (Pursuant to State law, expenditure of bond proceeds must be audited, and the proceeds cannot be used for teacher, administrator or employee salaries, repair or maintenance costs or other operating expenses.) Eastpointe Community Schools responds to the emergency

On the afternoon of April 10, Eastpointe Community Schools Communications and Marketing Coordinator Caitlyn Kienitz issued a news release on the incident.

Multiple threats by telephone were made against the school prior to 8:09 a.m. Staff immediately notified law enforcement and placed the building on lockdown, per the district’s emergency response plan.

According to the release, Eastpointe police responded immediately and proceeded to secure the school building and the neighborhood. Staff and students who had already arrived at the school were safely transported to Eastpointe Middle School.

Parents were contacted and were able to pick up their children from Eastpointe Middle School. School at Forest Park was closed for the day while authorities continued their investigation.

“Eastpointe Community Schools is grateful to our Forest Park administration and secretaries, as well as the Eastpointe Police Department, for their quick response,” the news release states. “We take threats made against our staff and students very seriously. No child should ever be afraid to come to school, and it is our duty to ensure the safety of all members of our learning community.”

School officials encourage parents, students and community members to call the police or use the state’s OK2Say system to report any information regarding any threat to schools.

Once Forest Park had been emptied, several K-9 units from police departments in Hazel Park, Sterling Heights, Southfield and Farmington Hills searched the school with negative results, according to the release.

According to Eastpointe police, detectives were able to develop Parks as a suspect and conducted surveillance at his home in Detroit. When he left his home, Eastpointe police said, he was taken into custody without incident. The home was searched, and several items of “evidentiary value” were recovered; however, no weapon was located, according to the release.

Officers believe that Parks may be involved with the same types of threats and behaviors in other communities, according to the press release.

According to a press release from the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office April 14, Parks has a friend whose child attends the school; however, he has no relation to the child.

Parks is charged with false report or threat of terrorism, a 20-year felony, and false report of a felony, a four-year felony. Additionally, Parks was arraigned on the same day in the same court on charges of aggravated stalking, a five-year felony; using computers to commit a crime, a one-year felony; and intentional dissemination of sexually explicit visual material, a 93-day misdemeanor, all for a separate incident.

Parks is being held in the Macomb County Jail on a $1 million cash or surety bond for the false report or threat of terrorism charge; a $25,000 cash or surety bond for the aggravated stalking charge; and a $15,000 cash or surety bond for the false report of a felony charge. If released, he will be required to wear a GPS tether, and other bond conditions include that he must undergo a mental health evaluation, have no contact with the school and have no internet access. He is scheduled to appear in court before 38th District Court Judge Kathleen Galen for a probable cause conference April 25.

At press time, Parks did not have an attorney listed.

“Let it be noted that we will use every resource we have to protect our children,” Eastpointe Public Safety Director George Rouhib stated in the police press release. “Any threat or tacit threat that is made to harm someone will be treated as a credible threat, and you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. This is not a game. Your actions will change your life forever.”

The police press release, which was posted to the department’s Facebook page April 10, stated that the school was safe for students and faculty to return. Rouhib also instructed patrol officers to station a car at the school before and after school hours for at least a week following the incident.

Jeep crashes into business, flees

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — At 11:25 a.m. March 17, officers were dispatched to a business in the 51000 block of Van Dyke Avenue for a malicious destruction of property report. When the owner came to work, he discovered the front door of the business damaged.

A review of security footage showed a white Jeep run into the building. The Jeep is seen driving into the building, then backing up and exiting the parking lot onto Van Dyke. Police were investigating and were trying to find the owner of the Jeep.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — At 9:45 p.m. March 12, officers were dispatched to Murphy USA on 23 Mile Road near the Van Dyke Freeway for a larceny report.

The caller stated that his keychain, wallet, car keys, AirTag and AirPods case were stolen from the checkout area inside the store.

Officers arrived at the gas station and spoke to the caller, who stated that he placed his wallet and keychain on the counter when checking out. He stated that, after he paid, he forgot to retrieve his wallet and keychain. He went outside and then came back inside the store about five minutes later after pumping gas. At that point, his items were missing.

Some of his missing items were later located near the roadway and were damaged, as they appeared to have been thrown from a moving car.

Shoplifter arrested with stolen clothes

STERLING HEIGHTS — Police went to Kohl’s, 44200 Schoenherr Road, near Hall Road, March 19 upon hearing that a shoplifting incident was happening.

A repeat offender reportedly was filling a purse and a cart with merchandise. The suspect reportedly visited the men’s and children’s clothing sections and took items from them before exiting without paying.

Police watched two exits and reportedly saw the suspect leave and then reenter. Police said they apprehended the suspect and took her to loss prevention. Police said they recovered 25 clothing items worth a total of $683 and then arrested the suspect for retail fraud.

Fight witnessed in parking lot

STERLING HEIGHTS — A witness told police that around 10 people were fighting after midnight March 18 in a parking lot near a business in the 43000 block of Van Dyke Avenue, near Utica Road.

“armed individual” appeared. Then people who were involved reportedly left in a navy blue Cadillac and a white SUV, police said.

Vehicle taken from home

ST. CLAIR SHORES — At 7:15 a.m. on March 18, a report was made about a vehicle theft that happened in the 26000 block of Harmon Street between March 17 and March 18.

Officers spoke with a 48-year-old man who said he asked his son, 23, why the garage door was open. When his son went to check, he saw that his vehicle was stolen and his father’s vehicle had its passenger side window broken out.

The vehicle was last seen by the son at approximately 11:30 p.m. the previous night. A handgun was also in one of the compartments in the car. The son didn’t know who would steal the vehicle and the father said they lost the remote for the garage door, which could be how the suspects got in.

The last ping of the vehicle’s locator showed it was in Highland Park. Officers spoke with a neighbor, a 42-year-old woman, who said she saw the garage door open at approximately 4:30 a.m. when she let her dog out.

Later in the day, the son reportedly came back to the police station with videos provided by a neighbor.

The buck stops at the Bell

CLINTON TOWNSHIP — A case of counterfeit cash spending unfolded before workers at the Garfield Road Taco Bell on the evening of Feb. 25.

The suspect ordered a small meal and presented a $100 bill. Staff began questioning the validity of the banknote, and the suspect drove off in a Honda sedan without his questionable cash or the meal.

Patient escorted off hospital property GROSSE POINTE CITY — Police said they escorted an unruly patient out of Corewell Health’s Beaumont Hospital, Grosse Pointe, after the patient is said to have made threats against nursing staff at around 12:30 p.m. March 28.

Intoxicated driver stopped

GROSSE POINTE FARMS — Police stopped a 61-year-old Eastpointe woman in the area of Moross Road and Mack Avenue at 8:15 p.m. March 25 when they saw that she was driving on a front driver’s side rim that was almost completely eroded. The driver, who police said had slow and slurred speech and smelled of alcohol, told police she didn’t realize she was driving on the rim and not the tire. She admitted to having consumed one drink that evening. She was arrested for operating while intoxicated after being found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.19% — more than twice the legal limit — in a preliminary breath test.

STATEWIDE — When it comes to reading about fashion on the internet, Michiganders search for styles of the 1980s the most, according to research conducted by the website Boohoo.com.

Boohoo is a fashion retailer in the U.S., specializing in women’s, men’s and plus-size clothing. The research included studies in all 50 states. The second most popular fashion decade to search was the 1990s, with the 1970s as the third most viewed among Michigan residents. “(The 1980s) is the most searched for decade in 36 out of 50 states, including Michigan, with California, Texas, Pennsylvania and Florida searching for it the most,” according to a Boohoo spokesperson. “As the ’80s is now the most searched for fashion decade, iconic retro clothing has the potential to become increasingly popular in the coming years. With this in mind, will consumers embrace this bold, bright decade in 2023?”

PROFESSIONAL THEATER COMPANY SET TO OPEN IN WALLED LAKE WALLED LAKE — The Inspired Acting Company, a new professional theater company in Oakland County, has scheduled a six-show inaugural season.

According to a press release, the nonprofit was founded by West Bloomfield resident Jeff Thomakos, who will serve as producing artistic director of the theater.

“People always need stories,” Thomakos stated via the release. “If COVID taught us anything, it’s our need to hear stories and be a part of a larger community. Theatre gives us both of those things.”

According to the release, in addition to its mainstage productions, IAC will offer a range of educational and outreach programs, with in-person acting classes for adults and children.

The IAC inaugural season is scheduled to open April 21 with “Private Lives,”

by Noël Coward, with the production set to run through May 7.

The IAC is located at 1124 E. West Maple Road in Walled Lake.

Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and at 2 p.m. Sundays.

General admission tickets cost $35 for plays and $45 for musicals. Tickets may be purchased online at InspiredActing.org.

TEAM GUTS CAMP RETURNS

OAKLAND COUNTY — Team GUTS will be offering its annual summer camps in June and July for children, teens and adults with special needs.

According to a press release, the Team GUTS Fun & Fitness Camp will feature “a variety of fitness activities including athletic fitness training, sports skills, obstacle courses, martial arts, dance, daily nature walks and more. Additionally, we will have nutritional activities where campers learn how to prepare tasty, health-conscious snacks to enjoy!”

The camp will be held from 9 a.m. to noon during the weeks of June 19-23; June 26-30; July 10-14; and July 17-21. It will be held at the Hunter Community Center, located at 509 Fisher Court in Clawson.

PanCAN PurpleStride scheduled for April 29

DETROIT — The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute and the Michigan affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network — known as PanCAN — have partnered together to host the PanCAN Purple Stride fundraiser/awareness walk to be held April 29 at Milliken State Park.

PanCAN Purple Stride is a national movement that funds programs and services for pancreatic cancer patients and their families.

PanCAN Purple Stride is one of 60 events that will be held nationwide April 29.

According to a PanCAN Purple Stride press release, the five-year survival rate of pancreatic cancer is 12%, and it is the third-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S. At Karmanos, pancreatic cancer patients receive treatment from fellowship-trained oncologists who are part of the gastrointestinal and neuroendocrine oncology multidisciplinary team.
