Macomb sheriff says suspect forced Shelby Township officers to fire

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — After investigating an incident Jan. 9 in which two Shelby Township police officers opened fire on a suspect, the Macomb County Sheriff ’s Office determined that the officers acted according to the law and their training and that no charges would be requested against the officers.

Macomb County Sheriff Anthony M. Wickersham explained the investigation’s findings in a press conference Jan. 24 at the Sheriff ’s Office in Mount Clemens.

At 6:23 a.m. Jan. 9, Shelby Township’s emergency dispatch center received multiple calls reporting a domestic stabbing. According to the Sheriff ’s Office, the stabbing suspect, 30-year-old Miles Farish, was one of the callers. He stated that he had stabbed the victim, his mother, and repeatedly said that he wanted officers to kill him, according to the Sheriff ’s Office.

Two responding Shelby Township police officers arrived at the Shelby Oaks apartment complex, located at 45725 Utica Green West, near Mound and West Utica roads, at 6:37 a.m. Approximately two minutes later, they made contact with Farish.

The Sheriff ’s Office said that Farish was walking north on Utica Green West toward the two officers. They told him to stop and to drop his phone, and 15 seconds later one of the officers gives an order for Farish to “put the knife

When Jacob Efthemiou, 7, of Shelby Township, was 4 years old in 2020, he was diagnosed with Henoch-Schonlein purpura, and gifts of toys helped him get through the pain and medical procedures. Last month, Efthemiou donated 125 gift bags to Children’s Hospital of Michigan to help current patients feel happier and braver while receiving treatment.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — The Shelby Gardeners Club has announced that it will be hosting an educational presentation on the art of Japanese flower arranging this month.

The presentation, “Ikebana — The Japanese Art of Flower Arranging,” will take place at 1 p.m. Feb. 8 at the Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center, 4101 River Bends Drive. The fee to attend is $5 and the audience is limited to 40 people.

Shelby Gardeners Club to host presentation on Japanese art of flower arranging

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — A 7-year-old’s dream of making “Bravery Boxes” and delivering them to Children’s Hospital of Michigan patients — just like what was done for him during difficult times — came true.

Jacob Efthemiou, a Shelby Township boy, was diagnosed in 2020 with Henoch-Schonlein purpura, or HSP, which is inflammation of the blood vessels in one’s skin, joints, intestines and kidneys, after a series of doctors’ office visits and, eventually, a referral to Children’s Hospital of Michigan.

Now recovered, he also remembers the kindness of the doctors, nurses, technicians and other hospital staff at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, and the little toys they gave him to help him through that traumatizing experience.

To pay that kindness forward, Jacob created and donated 125 gift bags Jan. 22 that he stored in a large box called “Jacob’s Bravery Box.” Children’s Hospital of Michigan staff gives the bags to patients facing their own medical challenges. The patients are seen in Detroit and at other Children’s Hospital of Michigan pediatric medical offices across the metro Detroit area.

This is the third year Jacob has made bags. He started with 25 gift bags when he was 5 and delivered them to his favorite Children’s Hospital of Michigan nephrology nurse, Nancy Hanes, and

WATCH Police find methamphetamine, machete

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — A police officer stopped a vehicle at 4:25 p.m. Jan. 19 near 22 Mile and Schoenherr roads and found out while talking to the driver, a 52-year-old Brighton man, that his driver’s license had been revoked.

Police said the man also had multiple warrants for his arrest. A 31-year-old Yale woman, who was a passenger in the vehicle, told officers that there was methamphetamine hidden under the front center seat,

according to police.

During a search of the vehicle, police reportedly found 24 grams of methamphetamine, prescription pills, scales and a large machete. The machete had been under the driver’s seat, police said. The officers arrested the driver and passenger, and the driver admitted that he was in the area to sell methamphetamine to a user, according to police.

“Our department will remain steadfast in our commitment to do everything possible to keep these dangerous drugs off the streets of our township. In addition to our local resources, we continue to partner with the Drug Enforcement Agency to help us in our mission,” Shelby Township Police Chief Robert Shelide said in a prepared statement on crimewatch.net.

STERLING HEIGHTS — Havel Elementary School physical education teacher Robbie Langlois works with all three sections of the Adjusted Integrated Modified program, which is a special education course tailored to enrolled students.

“I try to make sure each student is engaged with me or one of the paras at some point so they’re doing some sort of on-task work, even if it is short lived,” Langlois said in a press release. “The short on-task time will ideally progress to more and more over time.”

Melissa Ahler, a physical therapist in the Support and Related Services Division of the Macomb Intermediate School District, said that Langlois has a “special gift” to engage with her students.

Many AIM students have difficulties with spoken language or comprehending the complexities of directions, Aher said, so a key technique Langlois uses are visuals.

“Her teaching style works because she uses visual technology paired with a consistent approach,” Ahler said in a press release.

To further help Langlois and the AIM program paraprofessionals, Havel introduced the AIM mentorship program last year and expanded the program to include fifth and sixth grade mentors this year.

“The AIM mentorship program has allowed the AIM students to have more of a one-on-one assistance in the gym allowing for additional activities that they would not be able to do otherwise,” Principal Jennie Blair said in a press release.

The mentorship program has an added benefit of forming relationships between the students, who look forward to working together.

Shelby Township Senior Center showcases artist for January and February

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Sandy Knaack of Rochester Hills started an unusual business in 2022 called NatureScapes.

She started picking up leaves and flowers on her daily walks, and then it expanded to collecting leaves and flowers wherever she traveled at home or abroad.

She then worked out a way to preserve them, based on the species and the moisture content of the material. She continues to expand her inventory that she uses for her custom framing of leaves and flowers, which now includes feathers.

Knaack currently has a display of her art set up at the Shelby Activity Center that will continue through the end of February.

After doing a dozen or so arts and crafts shows, she was very encouraged from the positive responses that she had received from the many people who stopped at her booth. Often, they would just stare at each of her pieces and relate how wonderful they made them feel.

Knaack, who has an interior design back-

ground, said that making an intricate pattern of leaves, flowers and feathers uses many of the same design principles that she used when completing room and drapery design plans for clients.

She disassembles, cleans and does whatever touch-ups are needed for repurposed frames.

The dried materials she selects are based on the choice of frame, mat and background paper used in the composition. Some of her pieces feature mosaic tiling that complements the design. No two pieces of hers are ever alike.

Her nature dioramas in shadow box frames take one out of the present and into a calming wilderness complete with mountains, trees and soaring eagles.

Knaack has plans to expand her product line and to attend more art shows in Michigan.

down,” according to a timeline of events from the Sheriff ’s Office.

Farish didn’t comply with the order and kept walking toward the officers, who retreated backward with their guns drawn, the Sheriff ’s Office said.

Within the next 20 seconds, a third officer arrived at the confrontation. At this point, the Sheriff ’s Office said, Farish was standing with his hands in the air and a knife in his right hand while the first two officers were telling him to “drop the knife.”

A few seconds later, Farish continued to move toward the officers and the third officer fired a Taser; the Sheriff ’s Office stated that two attempts with the stun weapon “did not have an impact on him.”

Simultaneously to the second Taser attempt, the other two officers fired their guns at Farish, who was 15 feet away, at 6:40 a.m. and 12 seconds, and Farish, hit by six of 18 shots, fell to the ground, the Sheriff ’s Office said. Twelve seconds later the officers disarmed Farish and began giving him medical aid, according to the Sheriff ’s Office timeline.

“Officers immediately called for medical assistance and rendered aid,” Wickersham said. “They put pressure on wounds and put on tourniquets and did everything they could to save Farish’s life. Farish is alive today and is in stable condition lodged in the hospital. He was transported, and because of their efforts. As you can see in this situation, he was bent on coming at law enforcement, and comments completed his actions, and he wanted law enforcement to take action and shoot him — possibly a suicide by cop situation. But if you look at the reports in our investigation and the body camera, police officers utilized extreme restraints before having to use deadly force in the situation,” he said.

According to the Sheriff ’s Office, the

mother survived and is recovering. No officers were injured in the incident.

The Sheriff ’s Office said that it “found no evidence to substantiate requesting criminal charges for Shelby Township Officers.

The case was also reviewed with the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office. The use of force upon Miles Farish was consistent with the training and applicable Michigan laws. The MCSO investigation is closed at this time.”

Police have had two encounters with Farish previously, once in 2020 for a missing person report and once in 2019 during a traffic complaint, but nothing violent, according to the Sheriff ’s Office. Farish reportedly is not communicating with police. All police involved have gone through required evaluations after the incident.

No one other than Wickersham spoke at the press conference.

Farish was arraigned on a charge of assault with intent to murder in 41A District Court Jan. 12. He was given a $2 million bond and referred to Community Corrections for a mental health evaluation.

Following the Sheriff ’s Office’s investigation, Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido authorized additional charges against Farish related to the confrontation with police. Farish was charged Jan. 23 in 41A District Court with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon and three counts of assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer. He was arraigned in his hospital bed with a $2 million cash bond awaiting his court appearances.

Farish had probable cause hearings in the cases against him scheduled in 41A District Court Feb. 6, after press time, and preliminary exams scheduled Feb. 13.

According to court records, Joshua Duane Jones is Farish’s lawyer for all the charges. Jones could not be reached immediately.

Women learn self-defense techniques; space needed for next class

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — The Shelby Township Police Department stated on crimewatch.net that it completed another successful RAD (Rape, Aggression, Defense) class during the weekend Jan. 27-28. RAD classes are self-defense classes that Shelby Township police officers teach for women.

The department said it is working on scheduling its next class. Anyone who owns a private space or facility that holds approximately 25 people that the instructors could use for these classes is asked to contact Bennett.

Pedestrian bridge construction underway on 25 Mile Road SHELBY TOWNSHP — The construction of a new pedestrian bridge over the Lawson Drain on the north side of 25 Mile Road, between Mound Road and Van Dyke Avenue, began in late January.

The bridge will connect neighborhoods north of 25 Mile Road to Malow Junior High School, Morgan Elementary School and Eisenhower High School. The bridge will be a premanufactured steel truss bridge supported by concrete footings.

The township said in a press release that it expects the concrete footings to be completed by March, if the weather cooperates, and then sidewalk installation and grading to occur in spring or early summer, and bridge delivery and installation to occur in June. The whole project, including restoration, is expected to wrap up by the end of the summer.

The initiative received funding from the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments with an award of $268,169 in its Fiscal Year 2023 Transportation Alternatives Program funds. The project will fill one of the last sidewalk gaps on 25 Mile Road between Mound Road and Van Dyke Ave.

Planning Commission to hold public hearing

UTICA — The Utica Planning Commission will hold a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 7 in the City Council chambers of the municipal building, 7550 Auburn Road.

The purpose of the public hearing is to gain citizen input regarding a special conditional use request for 7525 Auburn Road, parcel identification number 07-33-478-039.

The parcel is located on the north side of Auburn Road, east of the Clinton River. It is zoned downtown mixed-use development and subject to the review and approval of conditional uses. The applicant is proposing to construct a mixed-use building, which includes office and commercial uses.

The city’s leadership wants to increase population density downtown and create an attractive, walkable downtown district. City leaders also want to close the gap between the downtown and Jimmy John’s Field.

The city asks people to come prepared to talk about what they like and don’t like about the current downtown, what they would like the downtown to look like in 10 years, and how they would like the connection between the downtown and Jimmy John’s Field to look.

Utica will be receiving $2,490 in Community Development Block Grant funds for fiscal year 2024 from the Macomb “Urban County” Program, according to a posting on the city’s website. The federal government requires that the city give top priority to activities that benefit primarily low- or moderate-income families, or that help prevent or eliminate blight.

“The meaning of the title of the presentation is literally meaning ‘to give life to flowers,’” she said. “Ikebana is an art form which originated in ancient Japan. Ikebana artists use flowers and other natural elements to embody harmony, peace and beauty. Considerations of color, line, form and function are used as a guide in the creation of an arrangement.”

Ivy Schwartz, the club’s publicity director, said the Shelby Gardeners Club is excited to share the art of Japanese flower arranging with the greater community in the heart of southeast Michigan’s frequently bleak, frozen winter.

“We need the calming effect of beauty, order and simplicity through Ikebana, and an appreciation of nature’s gifts. We need this art to be an offset to today’s complexity,” she said.

Nadine Thacker, a Shelby Gardeners Club member, said the program promises to be an enjoyable break.

The Shelby Gardeners Club will host a presentation, “Ikebana — The Japanese Art of Flower Arranging,” Feb. 8 at the Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center.

“We will learn from our Ikebana International ambassador about Japanese culture as she demonstrates the unique art of ikebana,” she said.

The Shelby Gardeners Club is made up of members of the community who together promote interest and knowledge in gardening, flower arrangement and ecology.

Olympic trials dream comes true for Utica High School grad

MACOMB TOWNSHIP — It was a moment with her mother that she’ll never forget.

As Macomb native and Utica High School graduate Brittney Hall crossed the finish line on Oct. 14 at the 26.2-mile Bakline’s McKirdy Micro Marathon in Rockland Lake State Park in New York with a time of 2:36:28, narrowly beating the 2:37 required for the U.S. Olympic trials, everything seemed to come to fruition for the 25-year-old runner.

“It was really surreal when I found out I qualified,” Hall said. “My mom came right up to me after, and we were both hugging and crying. It was such a special moment, and it was really cool to just feel like I was a part of something bigger than myself with just working out there with all the other groups of girls and all of us trying to work together to qualify for the same time.”

Hall’s Olympic trials qualification punched her ticket to compete in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Marathon, a 26.2mile stretch through Orlando, Florida’s many historic landmarks, on Feb. 3. The top three finishers among the women and men are expected to represent Team USA at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris this summer.

She was unable to complete the marathon due to severe calf and shin pain, stopping after the eight-mile mark, but she’s already determined to return for a shot at the 2028 Olympics, and her journey to get to where she’s at this year only speaks volumes to her passion and work ethic.

Hall graduated from Utica High School in 2016 and has dedicated her efforts to an Olympic trials qualification for the past year and a half after graduating from Western Michigan University in 2022.

Hall, who ran cross country and track collegiately at Western Michigan and graduated with a 4.0 GPA, said her six-year

collegiate running career didn’t come to the finish she hoped it would, and that only fueled her even more to take up running after college.

“My last collegiate race was a 10k at the Mid-American Conference, and I ran it with a stress fracture,” Hall said. “I knew I didn’t place as well as I wanted to, and I knew I had more in me, so after I graduated, I wanted to try out for marathons and see what it was about because I love the longer distance running.”

Hall linked up with McKirdy Trained’s Esther Atkins, a well-established coach and runner in the sport.

Atkins was a USA Marathon champion in 2014 and represented the United States in the World Marathon Championships in 2015 in Beijing, China, placing 24th in the marathon event.

Atkins said Hall had one major goal in mind for herself when she met with her over the VDOT O2 training platform for coaches and runners, and Atkins said she knew Hall would reach her goal with ease.

“When she came to me, she just wanted to break three hours,” Atkins said. “I was like, ‘Girl, you’re going to do that.’”

She reminded me of myself coming out of college. Even though I was a D-III athlete (Case Western Reserve University), her times were similar to mine coming out of college, so it was nice to see that and know the trajectory she could be on.”

Running a 2:50:24 in her first marathon appearance at the 2022 Indianapolis Monumental Marathon on Nov. 5, Hall exceeded her own expectations in only one race.

Building off the momentum, Hall took first on the female side in the 2023 Toronto Marathon on May 7 with a 2:42:56, finishing 11 minutes ahead of second place.

Hall said she utilized a unique mindset during the race to help her stay confident and focused.

“There was a research article out there that they did this study where if people smiled while running or doing a workout, it tricks the brain into thinking, ‘Oh, I’m happy and/or safe,’” Hall said. “It releases endorphins, so that’s what I did. I smiled, and of course every time I did that, there were the camera people with me having a grin on my face in all the pictures.”

While running takes up the bulk of her free time, Hall is currently working in the University of Michigan’s hand therapy fellowship program while studying in the program as well. Hall said she discovered a passion for hand therapy after suffering a horseback riding accident when she was 15.

“Just having that experience of me going through it myself really helps me relate to patients and understand what they’re going through and help them see a light at the end of the tunnel even though whatever they’re

going through is a tough thing,” Hall said.

Hall, who currently lives in Ann Arbor, cycles through clinics in Northville, Canton, and Ann Arbor, which makes for some latenight runs.

“Typically, with my work schedule, I’m running right after work,” Hall said. “I have my headlamp to help me see in the dark. It’s a lot for sure, but I’ve been running for the last 11 years. It’s really ingrained in me, and I love running. It’s kind of my lifestyle. Some people think I’m crazy working a 10-hour day and running after, but I enjoy it. It’s kind of my stress release, too.”

Already qualifying for the Olympic trials in less time than she could’ve ever imagined, there’s no telling what Hall can accomplish down the road.

The Olympic qualification this year could just be a steppingstone for future success, especially with her work ethic.

“I think it’s the competitive edge in me and that runner’s craziness or addiction,” Hall said. “I just really like seeing how I can push myself and how fast I can run. I would say it’s kind of ingrained in me.”

pediatric nephrologist Dr. Rossana Baracco, who is the director of the pediatric nephrology fellowship program at the hospital This year, Jacob shopped and his second-grade classmates at Utica’s Switzer Elementary School formed an assembly line to produce dozens of boxes to share with young children facing medical issues of their own.

On Jan. 22, the gift bags were at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Specialty Center on Beaubien Street in Detroit, outpatient medical offices and an infusion center across the street from the main hospital.

Danielle Efthemiou, Jacob’s mom, said her son had said that he wanted to do 100 bags and have his friends help.

“The kids understand what it’s like to help in any way, and this can make kids feel better. If there’s one kid that the process is a little less scary for, it’s worth it,” Danielle Efthemiou said.

Jacob said during a media event that when he got an IV, the medical personnel gave him a Spider-Man toy.

“They said I would get a toy, so I thought, ‘I should do this.’ I got a toy and I was happy, so I thought I wanted to give out toys to make other people happy,” Jacob said.

with as a kidney doctor experience regular IVs, biopsies, ultrasounds and imaging, blood draws and other medical procedures that can be scary for them.

“The team at Children’s Hospital of Michigan are always conscious of this, providing everything from hugs to toys to diversions to help them. We always strive to care for our patients both physically and emotionally,” Baracco said in a press release.

Danielle Efthemiou said her family is thankful that they ended up at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. The hospital had a really good team that worked with Jacob and understood how scary things could be for a small child.

She said being a part of delivering the boxes, and her son being part of it, was awesome. Even though he wasn’t able to physically give the bags to the patients, he gave them to Hanes and Baracco, and they explained how they would give them out to the kids who need them.

“He has seen through social media showing the children receiving them. It’s just such a good lesson on empathy and understanding in humanity. He remembers when he was getting treatment and that’s what made him want to do his own. Everyone always wanted to see what he included in the bags this year. This year he changed it up; blue pandas and pink pandas for girls,” she said.

“It’s been a very pleasant experience,” said Knaack.

Barb Frank said she knows Knaack from her church, Paint Creek UMC. “I have also been to Sandy’s home and her studio where I saw many of her creations displayed, and in fact, purchased one myself. I can vouch for Sandy that it is her own work, and that she has done many successful arts and craft shows,” Frank said.

Dianne Fiedler said she has known Knaack since fourth grade when she moved to Troy with her family.

“Sandy has been a good friend and we have kept in touch for the last 65 years, and I can vouch for her. Sandy has always been a creative person in both her professional career and her home. Although I have moved to Florida, we still talk weekly,” she said.

Last September, she visited Knaack in her Rochester Hills home and saw Knaack’s art studio.

“I was impressed with her studio and all the framed art she has created. We went for a walk around her home and she was constantly picking up things to incorporate in her leaf and feather art,” she said.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — At approximately 8 p.m. Jan. 31, Shelby Township police and firefighters responded to a crash in which a vehicle had hit a pedestrian on 25 Mile Road, near Mound Road.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at a local hospital, police said.

According to a statement from the Shelby Township Police Department on crimewatch. net, a 55-year-old woman from Macomb Township was driving eastbound on 25 Mile when she hit the pedestrian, a 73-year-old Shelby Township woman, who was waking in the roadway. The department said that the driver stopped at the scene and cooperated with police.

Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors with the driver, according to police.

The case was under investigation and police asked that anyone with information related to the crash or who saw the pedestrian walking in the roadway before the crash call Shelby Township detectives at (586) 731-2121.

Senior citizens can find long lost yearbooks online

METRO DETROIT — Cherished memories come from receiving a yearbook on the last day of school and having friends and teachers sign it with personalized messages. Not only are they personal keepsakes of time spent in school, but they can also act as historical records for decades to come.

Many local libraries and museums have taken the initiative to create online databases of their communities’ digital yearbooks.

Birmingham

Birmingham’s historical yearbook collection is now available online through the Birmingham Museum. Birmingham residents and history buffs can access the 19191929 issues for free.

“People have been waiting to get a peek at our oldest yearbooks. They shed a light on what it was like to live in Birmingham in the early 20th century, and the world of

teenagers back then,” Birmingham Museum Director Leslie Pielack said in an email.

“Flipping through our historic yearbook collection is a delightful glimpse of the young people, their educators, and their hopes and dreams. Especially at this time of year, many of us are reminded of the importance of family and our personal roots.”

The museum’s school yearbook collection has been acquired over the last 50 years, including the first yearbook printed by Birmingham High School, in 1919.

Through yearbooks, valuable information can be gathered by experts, including genealogists and local historians, as well as families conducting research of their own.

“It gives a really good window into how life was back then,” Museum Assistant Justin Koch said. “One thing that I really find fascinating when I was flipping through these was 100 years ago, society was very different than it is today, but at the end of the day, teenagers are kind of the same as they were back then.”

To make it easier on people looking for specific family members, the yearbook collection is searchable. Someone could type in their families name and be brought to the page where that name is listed.

The museum’s collection is only missing a few issues from the early 20th century to the 1980s. Koch said he hopes that at some point they will be able to acquire the editions they are missing from the collection.

Rochester Hills

The Rochester Hills Public Library has a digital collection of resources for the community to browse through.

“It gives us a snapshot of the history of our community,” said Hilary Maurin, the adult services librarian at Rochester Hills Public Library. “Our community, specifically, has always been very focused on education. So, especially those older yearbooks going back to the 1920s, it is so great to see the legacy of 100 years now that’s been going on with Rochester High School.”

Maurin added that the digital versions make it easier to keep copies safe. They have had some celebrities come through the school system, so digital copies keep these photos preserved. For example, Madonna is featured in one of the yearbooks from her time in Rochester Hills, but it is no longer available because someone cut her photo out of the physical edition.

Royal Oak

The Royal Oak Public Library has a digital library of historical Kimball High

School Lancer yearbooks from 1958-2006.

With each vibrant cover on display, the books are easy to navigate and are full-text searchable. Yearbooks can also be downloaded for offline access.

Susan Sheiner, the adult services librarian at the Royal Oak Public Library, said she has often found people looking for old classmates in these yearbooks, as well as relatives, to see what life was like when they graduated from high school.

“I think it’s a way for people to connect with parts of their family history and do research on various historical moments,” Sheiner said.

Northville

Northville District Library has a large collection of yearbooks available online in a searchable format. They have historic yearbooks available for both high school and middle school.

Laura Mancini, the director of the Northville District Library, said these yearbooks are a great way to see what the city and the people living in the city were like during specific moments in time.

“Northville is a town that, you know, has a lot of local history to it. It’s a historic town, and people are very proud of their history and very interested in it. So we do have folks that regularly research Northville history, and we want to be a resource for them,” Mancini said.
