Troy receives $1.28 million in funding for trail project

In the upcoming Ridgedale Players adaption of the “Anatomy of a Murder,” Judge Weaver — played by Phil Potter — listens to arguments from defense attorney Paul Biegler and prosecutor Claude Dancer, played by Greg Bowman and Dennis Moylan, respectively. The courtroom drama is inspired by a real-life murder mystery set in 1950s Michigan.

TROY — A $1.28 million grant to the city of Troy will pave the way for a mile-long path. The Southeast Michigan Council of Governments awarded the funding as part of the Transportation Alternatives Program. The money will be used for a mile of 10-foot-wide pathway between Wattles and Long Lake roads. TAP is a competitive program that distributes about $10 million in federal funds to local transportation projects each fiscal year, like shared-use path and sidewalk modernization, pedestrian safety improvements, new sidewalks, and other amenities increasing usability. The city of Troy has been interested in providing the community with trails and pathways since the 1970s and began steadily working on such efforts in the early 2000s. The new trail will start at the mid-block pedestrian crossing on Wattles Road, run to Leonard Elementary School on Tallman Road, then continue north to Eckford Street. From there, it will pass through two new housing developments and into the Troy De-

New curriculum at Athens High focuses on manufacturing

TROY — A new curriculum at Athens High aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed for a successful career in advanced manufacturing. The program is called “IGNITE: Master-

ing Manufacturing,” a collaboration with the state, the Michigan Manufactures Association, and LIFT — a national manufacturing innovation institute supported by the U.S. Department of Defense. The curriculum made its debut at Athens High this school year. An appropriation from the state Legislature in 2024 enabled the program to

expand into the high school. The goal is to strengthen Michigan’s pipeline of skilled talent in high-demand technical fields. “The introduction of (IGNITE) at Athens High School represents an important advancement in our ongoing efforts to align education with the evolving needs of industry,” said Troy Schools Superintendent Rich-

ard Machesky, in a statement. “This partnership ensures that our students have access to state-of-the-art technology and experiential learning opportunities that prepare them to contribute meaningfully to Michigan’s advanced manufacturing sector.” Originally developed in 2018 with in-

NCAA, organizing committee unveil 2027 Men’s Final Four logo

BY SCOTT BENTLEY sbentley@candgnews.com

DETROIT — The NCAA and the Detroit Local Organizing Committee revealed the logo for the 2027 Men’s Final Four on Friday, Dec 19, at Ford Field. The tournament games will take place at Ford Field on April 3 and April 5, 2027. The logo was designed by Section 127 and draws inspiration from the city’s street signs and auto tags. Detroit’s 313 area code is also displayed next to a basketball-record album graphic that pays homage to Motown and the city’s legacy. The “Detroit” in brackets in the middle highlights the tournament being hosted by the city. “We are thrilled that the Final Four is returning to the great city of Detroit,” NCAA Senior Vice President of Basketball Dan Gavitt said. “While it’s only the second time the Final Four has come to the city, Detroit and other Michigan cities have a long history … of hosting March Madness.” The Palace of Auburn Hills, Ford Field, Little Caesars Arena, the Pontiac Silverdome and Jenison Fieldhouse have all hosted NCAA Tournament games before, dating back as far as 1963. However, the Final Four has only been in

The sessions will be broken up by position and age and will all take place at Harwell Field and the Doris J. & Donald L. Duchene Sr. Athletic Facility. “This event is a great opportunity for our programs to connect with the motivated participants and empower them by providing both educational and impactful experiences that will help their development and carry over to their high school and youth baseball seasons,” Wayne State

University head coach Ryan Kelley said in a press release. “Our dedicated coaches, staff, team and partners like Born in Detroit help make this opportunity come together.” Sessions one and two will focus on pitching development and will be held on Jan 31. Session one will be for ages 8-13 and will take place from noon to 2 p.m., and session two will be for ages 14-18 and will be held from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. The pitching development sessions will focus on arm care, strength and conditioning education, drills and bullpens. TROY — Corewell Health plans to build a new tower at its Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital, located at 44201 Dequindre Road — part of a 94-bed expansion project that aims to support inpatient demand and improve patient access. The expansion measures 132,000 square feet and will increase the hospital’s licensed bed count from 530 to 624, while increasing the percentage of private rooms from 40% to 72%.

A new 128,000-square-foot parking deck with a connecting pedestrian bridge is also planned for the project. According to officials with Corewell Health, the project had been under consideration for some time, in part due to an increase in patients using the hospital. “Troy and northern Oakland County are among the fastest-growing communities that Corewell Health serves, and the new tower will help us continue to deliver sustainable, integrated and patient-centered care,” said Lamont Yoder, president of Core-

Detroit Auto Show brings new, returning experiences to Huntington Place BY BRIAN WELLS bwells@candgnews.com

DETROIT — Engines, innovation and interactive experiences will return this month as the Detroit Auto Show takes over Huntington Place. This year, among multiple interactive exhibits, the auto show is introducing the Visit Detroit Interactive Experience, an immersive, family-friendly showcase located in the atrium of Huntington Place. A press release from organizers of the auto show states that the exhibit is aimed at sparking curiosity, creativity and career inspiration for the next generation of automotive and mobility leaders. “Serving as a high-energy and family-fun gateway into the show, the new atrium activation reflects Detroit’s role as a global hub for mobility, technology and innovation — while intentionally creating hands-on entry points for young people to see themselves in the future of the auto industry,” the release states. According to the release, the exhibit offers guests of all ages an opportunity to explore realworld science and engineering concepts, hands-on coding and problem-solving, augmented and virtual reality-based technician training and more. Tomey was a standout pitcher who played for Detroit Catholic Central and Eastern Michigan University before being drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 30th round of the 2003 MLB Amateur Draft. He then played minor league baseball for the Tigers and Dodgers organizations until 2008. “We’re honored to help young athletes build their skills and confidence on the baseball field,” Tomey said in the release. The Born in Detroit brand was trademarked in 2015 by brothers Michael and Anthony Tomey, and brothers George and Alex Bourkoulas. The brand has officially licensed apparel for the Tigers, Lions, Red Wings and Pistons as well as a handful of local colleges. All participants will receive a Born in Detroit T-shirt. tion of them to explore a future in the auto industry, that’s a win for Detroit and for the industry as a whole.” Inside the exhibit hall, visitors can experience the debut of Michigan Overland Adventure, a new immersive feature celebrating the vehicles, gear and lifestyle of overlanding — self-reliant, vehicle-dependent travel to remote destinations, typically involving camping and off-road-capable vehicles. “Designed as a rugged, adventureinspired environment, Michigan Overland Adventure will transform a dedicated area of the show floor into an overland showcase featuring custom-built trucks, off-road SUVs, adventure-ready rigs and expedition equipment built for exploration,” a press release from the organizers states. “The experience invites attendees to step into the world of overlanding — where capability, durability and freedom come together.” Szott said the exhibit reflects a shift that’s been seen in the industry towards vehicles that are “built for more than just getting from Point A to point B.” “Michigan Overland Adventure taps directly into that momentum. It reflects

how automakers – especially those with deep roots here in Detroit – are responding to consumer demand for capability, authenticity and vehicles that can take people further, whether that’s up north, off the grid or off the beaten path,” he said in a statement. According to the press release, besides featuring vehicles from Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Jeep, Ram, Toyota, INEOS, Subaru and American Expedition Vehicles, the exhibit will also feature rooftop tents, off-road trailers, recovery equipment and expedition gear. The show will also feature a number of signature experiences, such as the return of The Gallery, an ultra-luxury and exotic vehicle showcase; Modded Detroit, one of Michigan’s premier automotive enthusiast groups, which will bring a curated showcase of over 150 modified vehicles; and Racing Day on Jan. 20. The Detroit Auto Show will run Jan. 14-25 at Huntington Place, 1 Washington Blvd. in downtown Detroit, with the public show running Jan. 17-25. For a full schedule and list of exhibits, visit detroitautoshow. com. Check candgnews.com for more auto show coverage from the media preview, which occurred after press time. partment of Public Works property, before continuing through a third housing development and ending at an existing shared-use path on Long Lake Road. Where it runs by neighborhoods and the DPW parcel, the path will feature a mix of upgraded sidewalks and new paved paths. On the school property, it will follow and cross the scenic Sturgis Drain. “This is a transformational grant for us — the fourth phase of this trail project — and it is the first phase that is connected to really major roads and is making our trail system usable on many levels,” said Troy Mayor Ethan Bake, in a statement. “I am excited to see this work get started, and I’m so thankful to have the federal dollars to come back to the community where a lot of it started from,” Baker said. “Thank you to the federal representatives that worked so hard to get that done. And I, of course, support reauthorization of the transportation bill — it’s an important part of what local governments depend on and use. Thank you again to SEMCOG — we are really grateful for all that you do.” The project intends to provide a new

Michigan once before, in 2009, also at Ford Field. “The Final Four is much different than it was in 2009,” said Dave Beachnau, CEO of the Detroit Local Organizing Committee for the 2027 Men’s Final Four. “It’s really been amplified.” Beachnau went on to say that last year’s Men’s Final Four in San Antonio reported $400 million in economic impact on the area and that organizers expect about 100,000 visitors to come in from out of town for the event. In 2024, downtown Detroit hosted the NFL Draft and reported an all-time NFL record in attendance with 775,000 people showing up across three days. In 2027, the Final Four will have a different feel to it. “The NFL Draft was a great event, but these two events are almost complete opposites,” Beachnau said. “We did have a lot of out of town visitors for the draft, but it was largely a local audience. The Final Four … certainly the local people will be able to enjoy the events, but it’s largely a visitor event.” At the logo release on Dec 19, members of the Michigan State University basketball

program were also in attendance. MSU head coach Tom Izzo offered his support of the event and the logo. “Michigan State played a huge role in us being able to win the bid for 2027. Not only coach Izzo with his reputation … but (MSU) has great credibility with the NCAA from an event management standpoint and how they conduct their business,” Beachnau said. “While there were a lot of factors that went into the decision to come to Detroit, I think without Michigan State it would’ve been more difficult for us.” The last time that the Men’s Final Four was in Detroit, Izzo and MSU made the Final Four and lost to the University of North Carolina in the national championship game. The 2009 Spartans are one of the few teams in NCAA history to play a Final Four game in the program’s home state. In 2008, regional final games were played at Ford Field and were used as a dress rehearsal for the 2009 Final Four. The games were the first to feature the basketball court placed at the 50-yard line, rather than the end zone, in order to get more fans in attendance. According to Beachnau, 2008 is still one of the most-attended regional games in NCAA history. “The people of this state love basketball

A ceremonial check was presented to officials at the Troy City Council meeting Dec. 15, celebrating the latest development in the project. “First, as a resident of Troy and as the executive director of SEMCOG, it makes us really happy when we hear that there’s a passion for trails across our region,” said Amy O’Leary, executive director of SEMCOG. “Also, (I’m) really excited, personally, for that to be in Troy.” In a statement, Oakland County Commissioner Gwen Markham (District 15) said she is honored to be part of the Regional Review Committee helping select projects for SEMCOG. “The committee is bipartisan,” Markham said. “We are all talking about transportation — moving the cars, moving the people through our region. Everybody has the same issues, so politics is not there when we get together. “One of things we look at is how many people is this going to reach? And how are we connecting with other communities?” she continued. “We try our best to make sure that there are projects throughout the seven-county region.” For more information, visit troymi.gov. at all levels, and those people owe an amount of gratitude to the Detroit Sports Commission, which put its best foot forward during a competitive site selection process to show off the transformation of downtown Detroit,” Gavitt said. “It’s a great time to be a sports fan in Michigan.” Over the last several years, Detroit has seen the NFL Draft, the announcement of a new WNBA franchise, and now the 2027 Men’s Final Four. This, along with the continued success of the teams in the area, highlights the excitement surrounding sports in the community. “The Tigers are coming off a trip to the postseason, the Pistons and Red Wings are playing great, Michigan and Michigan State are two of the best college basketball teams in the country,” Gavitt said. “And today we officially began the countdown to the 2027 Men’s Final Four with the unveiling of the logo for what promises to be a great event.” For more information, visit finalfourdetroit.com. bartender allegedly assaulted the lieutenant’s wife. The book was adapted into a movie in 1959 that included notable stars such as James “Jimmy” Stewart, Lee Remick and George C. Scott, among others. “It’s got an element of mystery to it, because there’s a little bit of (asking) what really happened going on with the audience as they’re watching the play progress,” said the director, Bruce Thorburn. “(Questions like) what are the real facts? Was she really raped? Did he have the mental capacity to form the intent to kill the guy? Because one of the defenses raised by his attorneys are that he had diminished capacity, and that was one of the first times in Michigan that (this point) was raised as a defense at a criminal murder trial.” Greg Bowman plays Paul Biegler, defense attorney for U.S. Army Lt. CRIME WATCH Animal abuse

TROY — Officers were dispatched to an apartment building at Coachman Drive around 2:40 p.m. Jan. 3 for an animal complaint after a caller reported they could hear a dog squealing, and they were concerned the dog was being abused. The dog, a small mixed breed weighing about 30 pounds, was found to have multiple injuries. She was turned over to Oakland County Animal Control and transported to veterinary care. The owner was arrested for animal abuse. He was arraigned on the charge of cruelty to an animal at the 52-4 District Court Jan. 6, his bond set at $5,000.

Manion. Bowman has done many shows with Ridgedale over the last 25 years. Bowman described himself as “no Jimmy Stewart,” but said he is striving for a performance that feels authentic. “…there’s no mystery here — we know right from the beginning that Lt. Manion shot the bar owner. There are witnesses — people saw him do it in the bar,” Bowman said. “So (Biegler’s) job as defense attorney, he’s got to come up with, ‘OK, how am I going to defend this?’” Emily Polet-Monterossl plays Laura Manion, the wife of Manion. This is PoletMonterossl’s second show with the Ridgedale Players, although she has done shows with other community theatre groups. “My character is complicated,” PoletMonterossl said. “She had a traumatic event happen to her, and she’s in an environment where a lot of people don’t necessarily trust

her or believe these things happened to her, and they kind of treat her suspiciously.” Dennis Moylan plays Claude Dancer, a prosecutor called in from Lansing. This is Moylan’s fifth show with the Ridgedale Players; he has done around 20 shows over the last 15 years, including with other theatre groups. “My character is arrogant,” Moylan said. “He is good, but he’s probably a tad more narcissistic than he needs to be, and it is a great foil for our lead character Paul, who is the one who is going to be the defense attorney.” The show features some adult language and story elements, due to the nature of the case. “I hope (audiences) get involved in the story of what happened and … that they get drawn into the whole courtroom drama of it,” Thorburn said. In a series of emails, students and staff praised the program. “The course allows students to develop basic skills in advanced manufacturing,”

explained Tim Heath, an IGNITE instructor at Athens High. “Students participate in group projects in CNC (computer numerical control), robotics, CAD (computer-aided design), additive manufacturing, electronics, control logic, and PLCs (programmable logic controllers) as used in industry.” Jacob Hegner, a student in the IGNITE program at Athens High, said he has learned a lot. “Every day, I learn more about things I love, and I’m excited every day,” Hegner said. Hannah Roy, another IGNITE student, enjoys the educational concepts and amenities available through the curriculum. “It provides many new things, like pneumatics, the lathe, and electronic sensors — all of which have a hands-on aspect,” Roy said. “The hardest part so far was the CAD design, but it was satisfying to work through, and I got to learn skills I could use on other projects.”

TROY SCHOOL DISTRICT ADVERTISEMENT

Jackson Kanczuzewski and Alan He also appreciate the program’s approach. “The IGNITE program is a brilliant opportunity to advance your knowledge about a wide range of things, from basic wiring to CNC operation,” Kanczuzewski said, noting it provides a pathway to certifications in engineering and manufacturing. Added He: “The IGNITE program allows students to pursue their passion not just through worksheets and lectures, but

also through hands-on labs that show parts of manufacturing such as controlling a robot arm using sensors. These skills are vital for future engineers and manufacturers.” In addition to Athens High, the program is also being introduced at Delton Kellogg High School in Delton. For more information about the program at Athens High, visit troy.k12.mi.us. Call Staff Writer Sarah Wright at (586) 498-1068.
