New year, new Vibe Suburban Collection Showplace renamed Vibe Credit Union Showplace BY CHARITY MEIER cmeier@candgnews.com
A new year brought a new Vibe to the city of Novi. The start of the new year ushered in a new era at the city’s convention center, as it was officially renamed the Vibe Credit Union Showplace on Jan. 1, after 15 years
as the Suburban Collection Showplace. According to a press release from the credit union, the renaming reflects the company’s “local commitment and its belief that major public venues should carry names tied to local identity, local accountability, and local investment.” “Vibe Credit Union works to lead our industry in the credit union philosophy of ‘people helping people.’ Our purpose of ‘ElSee VIBE on page 7A

MICHIGAN STATE POLICE HOLD WORSHIP SAFETY COURSE

The Suburban Collection Showplace begins its transition to the Vibe Credit Union Showplace with new digital signs visible inside the venue on Dec. 31.
In the aftermath of the September shooting at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, and with other shootings at places of worship, the Michigan State Police has resurrected a training program for security at places of worship, which had been paused during the COVID-19 pandemic. On Dec. 17, representatives from various places of worship across metro Detroit participated in the
MSP Security in Places of Worship course at the Novi Police Training Center. The course, which MSP holds at various locations across the state, provides attendees with the skills to create a safety team, develop a security plan, perform a vulnerability assessment and establish a culture of safety within their place of worship, among other topics, according to a press release. “I think more now than ever it is very important that we have brought this education to our See WORSHIP on page 13A

Ruby Krieg, a resident at Rose Senior Living Providence Park in Novi, has seen a century of change. Having lived through both polio and COVID-19, her story is one of survival; “obnoxious,” stubborn determination; and the importance of true love. “The thing is Ruby’s got such a mean streak in her that no disease is ever going to get in there and do anything,” joked her son-in-law and birthday buddy, John Douglas.

Novi Community School District unites to grant teen’s wish BY CHARITY MEIER
cmeier@candgnews.com
Thanks to the efforts of the Novi Community School District and Make-A-Wish Michigan, a Pinckney teen and her family were able to enjoy a Disney cruise this past December. Lily Terpstra, 13, has lissencephaly, cerebral palsy and a cognitive impairment. The double cortex lissencephaly was discovered when she began having seizures at the age of 3. “She has two active layers of cortex in her brain, so it’s basically like an electrical storm all the time,” said Lily’s mother, Erin Terpstra.
As a result of the double cortex lissencephaly, she has seizures daily and has undergone two neurosurgical procedures to help reduce the frequency of the seizures. At age 6, Lily had a vagus nerve stimulator implanted, and at 10, she had a deep-brain stimulator implanted, which required a full brain surgery. The deep-brain stimulator is connected to a transmitter in her abdomen. Both devices work to try to prevent and to stop seizures once they start. According to Erin Terpstra, there is nothing that can stop her daughter’s seizures all together. She said they have tried every anti-seizure medication that is available and most of them don’t work at all. Erin TerpsSee WISH on page 11A

Police cite weather, alcohol as causes of 7-vehicle New Year’s Day crash
The new year started with an unwanted bang in Novi, as winter weather conditions, coupled with alcohol, were the likely causes of a seven-car pileup on eastbound Interstate 96, just west of Novi Road, Jan. 1. A man believed to be under the influ-
ence of alcohol was driving east on Interstate 96 when he struck two vehicles during a snowstorm at 9:19 p.m., according to Novi Police Sgt. Joshua Johnson. Four other vehicles ended up crashing into the median and each other as they swerved to avoid the initial incident, Johnson said. “It appears the initial crash was both

Anyone who donates blood for the American Red Cross before Jan. 25 will automatically be entered to win a trip for two to Super Bowl LX in February in Santa Clara, California. January is National Blood Donor Month, and this marks the seventh year the Red Cross and National Football League partnered together to spread awareness of blood donations. The Red Cross blood supply is under pressure after a busy holiday season. The winter weather, too, makes it more challenging to ensure hospitals have the blood products needed for critical care. The Super Bowl LX tickets winner and their guest will enjoy access to pre-game activities, tickets to the official Super Bowl Experience, round-trip airfare to California, threenight hotel accommodations Feb. 6-9, and a $1,000 gift card for expenses. For more details visit RedCrossBlood.org/SuperBowl. To make a blood donation appointment use the Red Cross blood donor phone app, visit RedCrossBlood.org, or call (800) RED CROSS, which is (800) 733-2767. A blood drive has been scheduled for Jan. 15 at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center, 4646 John R St., in Detroit. Make an appointment at RedCrossBlood.org. An appointment for a blood donation lasts about one hour, though the actual donation takes eight to 10 minutes. Donors may donate every 56 days. An appointment for a platelet donation takes about two hours. Platelet donors can give every seven days.

evating Community. Creating Opportunity’ are not just words on a wall but the guiding principle in all we do,” Chaz Rzewnicki, president & CEO of Vibe Credit Union, said in a prepared statement. “As a not-for-profit financial cooperative, our profits stay in the region. Growth drives our ability to make a bigger impact locally — and that is what this partnership offers — a way to inform the community about Vibe Credit Union and help people on a much larger scale.” According to its website, the Showplace is the largest privately owned exposition, conference and banquet center in Michigan. The 580,000-square-foot venue sits on 55 acres directly off the Interstate 96 expressway
in Novi. The facility features 300,000 square feet of flexible exhibition space that can be divided into three expansive halls. The Showplace is a destination for public expositions, trade shows, conferences and social events. More than 2 million people come to the venue each year for various events such as the Motor City Comic Con, scheduled for May 15-17, and the Michigan State Fair, slated for Sept. 3-7. “The Showplace, since really its conception, has really been a beacon of metro Detroit, as the biggest conference center, so they have been doing this for decades where they have been bringing a lot of revenue to the local area by throwing huge events, which stimulate local investment and things like that,” said Wadsworth Pilot, vice president of brand and growth at Vibe Credit Union. “So, that is what we really saw that
said, ‘Hey, we are really aligned,’ because what we’re trying to do as well is to generate more revenue, more excitement around the metro Detroit area, more specifically in this instance Novi and that local area. But the best thing about the Showplace is that it really does pull people from all over the state to some of its shows. When you think about comic con and the State Fair and some of their bigger events, there are people traveling an hour or two from parts of Michigan to come into Novi for that.” Pilot said a major factor in the decision for the member-owned credit union to purchase the naming rights was that the purchase would benefit the local community. “The big thing for us is that we believe that local growth should equal local giveback,” Pilot said. “So, when Vibe grows, that growth should stay in our general area.”
According to Pilot, the profits generated from commercial naming rights deals typically don’t remain within the local community. “So, we really wanted to look at what it would be like for a not-for-profit organization to own that, where all the revenue that is generated from the naming rights deal can be reinvested back into that local community,” Pilot said. The Showplace conducted a yearlong search with the help of the Superlative Group to find a commercial naming partner. Blair Bowman, co-owner of the Vibe Credit Union Showplace, said that Vibe was selected from a large number of applicants. “We were very fortunate, pleased, honored, all those things for having a number of extremely qualified potential partners See VIBE on page 8A

approach us,” he said. “In the end, in the proverbial sense, it just seemed Vibe just checked so many boxes and had the mix, frankly; their organization’s culture and given their location, again, what they’re interested in to accomplish out of such a relationship so aligned with ours, it was really the best fit.” Bowman said that they liked that Vibe is a credit union and as such is member owned and has a different motivation than some more traditional businesses that might consider buying the naming rights. “Their approach to community involvement is, I think, what attracted us most,” Bowman said. This is the third commercial naming partner for the Showplace, following Rock Financial and Suburban Collection. Bowman said they have always had strong relationships with their commercial naming partners. The Suburban Collection originally purchased the naming rights for 10 years and then added a five-year extension, which went through Dec. 31, 2025. He said they chose to seek a new commercial naming partner after the Suburban Col-
lection, which had been locally owned, was bought out by Lithia Motors. “Their priorities were significantly different than Suburban with their number of dealerships that they had locally,” Bowman said. “When they changed hands to Lithia, like I said, their priorities as this very largescale international dealer group were much different than Suburban when they were a more local market, but very large. They were just different than Lithia’s approach to things,” Bowman said. Bowman said that he didn’t consider naming the facility after himself or his family. “Ego is not a part of our operations. I’ll just say that,” he said. He said that commercial naming rights have had a “varied structure of success” and that it is something that many major facilities do. He said that it provides resources and correlative marketing efforts. “(A commercial naming rights partnership) provides resources and correlative marketing efforts that just really allows us to extend our reach and provide resources for us to continue to provide what we do back into the community,” said Bowman. Bowman said that the Showplace drives more than $1 billion into the local, state
and regional economy, according to a recent third-party research study. He said that the Showplace is the largest privately operated, non-casino-based facility of its kind in the area. He said that many other venues are subsidized fully at the taxpayers’ expense to attract visitors and have the same economic impact as the Showplace. He said that the commercial naming rights is one way that the Showplace can obtain other sources of revenue and resources to obtain viability to bring in all the events and provide a lot back into the community. Bowman emphasized that Vibe is a naming partner only and as such has no say
in the Showplace’s operations or anything that they do. “We are as always trying to maintain a very cost-effective manner of operations and a place for folks to host their events, and certainly trying to be a cost-effective alternative particularly for those in the public event space for people to come and enjoy the Showplace,” Bowman said. Vibe Credit Union has secured the naming rights through 2051. For more information on events at the Showplace, visit vibeshowplace.com. Call Staff Writer Charity Meier at (586) 498-1092.

Detroit Express co-founder to release book DETROIT — Roger Faulkner, the co-founder of the Detroit Express, of the North American Soccer League, and former president of the Michigan Soccer Association, is releasing a book, “You Can’t Get There from Here: My Soccer Journey from Derby to Detroit,” on Feb. 24. The book will be published by Koehler Books and will highlight U.K. native Roger Faulkner’s life in sport. Topics range from the European tennis tour, the creation of the Detroit Express with Jimmy Hill, and his spearheading of the World Cup matches played at the Silverdome in 1994. Interactions with Henry Kissinger, Trevor Francis, Jimmy Hill, Pele and Robin Williams scratch the surface of some of the stories written. Alexi Lalas, a former U.S. soccer player and Fox Sports broadcaster, said in a press release, “No account of the wild west history of American Soccer is complete without Roger.” Hardcover editions of the book will be sold for $25.95 and softcover editions will go for $19.95. It will be available from Amazon in the U.S. and the U.K., Waterstones, Barnes and Noble, and other online retailers. Preorders before Feb 24 will include free shipping. — Scott Bentley
Ask the Low Vision Doctor Hand-held magnifiers are useless –
Can you help me? Q.
Dr. Jacobi I love my four kids and they love me. They feel badly for me because I have macular degeneration and find vision keeps me away from doing those things I like to do. If any of them sees something online that might help people with low vision they purchase it for me. So, I have dozens of hand-held magnifying devices that are useless because my hands aren’t free to use my computer or do other things which require 2 hands. Should I give up on using my computer or is there something you can do to help? Dorothy M.

I have good news for you Dorothy, you can say good-bye to handheld magnifiers. There are a variety of different devices available to help that are hands-free, so you can use your computer but do a variety of other things you have probably already given up on. The majority are in a wearable form similar to eyeglasses. You didn’t mention if there are other activities you want to do besides work on your computer, such as watching television, reading the bible, seeing the faces of your loved ones, or driving. During your initial evaluation we can determine what is needed to help you achieve each of your goals. The first step is to evaluate how much usable vision you have. In addition, we need to identify all of your needs. The best thing to do is to schedule an appointment so I can show you how we can help. Stop struggling with poor vision – call today to schedule an appointment.

tra said that the six medications her daughter is on work just enough to help limit them, but not enough to stop them. She said she has to have rescue medications on hand to help bring her out of a seizure at all times and that the seizures are so intense that her daughter frequently injures herself because of them. Most recently, she fell during a seizure and got a black eye, and she broke her arm last summer and got her cast off just before Christmas, in time to go on her trip. Erin Terpstra said they got Lily a service dog, Cliff, a golden retriever, a few years ago from Four Paws for Ability in Ohio, which specializes in epilepsy service dogs for veterans and children. Cliff is trained specifically to alert someone if Lily is having a seizure. “He is her favorite thing on the planet,” Erin Terpstra said. She said Cliff will bark to alert someone if Lily is having a seizure, he sleeps with her and cuddles, and he provides them with some peace of mind, as he is always on full alert. Lily is mentally 3 years old because of the cognitive impairment, which is likely worsened by the seizures, her mother said.
“She’s just an incredible kid,” her mother said. “She is the most fierce, determined child you will ever meet, and she is so funny.” Erin Terpstra said that her daughter’s favorite things are Christmas and Disney. However, as Lily is also autistic, it is difficult for her daughter to deal with long lines and crowds. “Any Disney movie we have watched 500 million times,” Erin Terpstra said before the cruise. “The tricky part is that Lily is also autistic as well. So, like crowds and long lines and things like that are really hard for Lily. So, a cruise will allow us to kind of experience Disney with her characters in the movies that she loves, but we don’t necessarily have to be waiting in lines and in crazy crowds, and she wouldn’t enjoy the rides at Disney, so it’s kind of a Disney-light.” Erin Terpstra said her daughter’s favorite characters include Nemo, the Incredibles, the characters from “Inside Out,” Mickey and Minnie, and any of the animated movie characters. Terpstra told the Novi Note Jan. 13 that the trip was just perfect. She said Lily was “pretty stoked” to see the ocean. “It was so perfect — absolutely, wonderfully perfect. Yeah, she had a blast and everyone found something that they were able to do and that they loved about the trip. It really was wonderful,” she said.

New! Year
Despite a snow day in the middle of the Wish Week fundraising, the Novi Community School District raised a record $25,000 for Lily and her immediate family to go on the Disney Cruise Dec. 17-21. The funds covered the cruise, airfare and spending money. The majority of the funds, $20,000, was raised by Novi High School students. Some of the fundraising events included a pancake breakfast, change donations that stall the start of class while the teacher counts it, a students-versus-staff basketball game, food trucks, and the opportunity to hit a teacher or a senior with a pie. “We were very fortunate that the two fundraisers we had (scheduled) for the snow day, we were able to very easily move them to another day,” said Novi High School senior Clara Pohlonski, who is the executive board vice president for the NHS student council, See WISH on page 16A

faith-based leaders and their security teams. I think it also gives a good opportunity because there’s not just faith-based leaders and their security teams from their places of worship in this; there are also law enforcement officers, people who are involved in emergency management, because I’m telling you, it’s a team, and we just saw it here in Grand Blanc,” MSP Col. James F. Grady II said. “It takes everybody working together to provide the proper response and recovery from an incident like that. So, I think that education is the key for you to develop a plan to keep you and the members of your place of worship safe, to know what the vulnerabilities are, to make sure there are medical kits, and to know where you are going to rally up at, where you are going to exit, if there’s an active shooter. It just gives you an opportunity to think about the things you want to prepare for to keep everyone safe,” Grady continued. He said that places of worship have to start with a plan, although plans are never perfect, and he reiterated his core belief that education is key. Gilda Wong-Bingham attended the training. She is a member of St. John Lu-
theran Church in Farmington Hills, as well as her local community emergency response team, and an emergency room nurse at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak. “We just need to be more well rounded in how we welcome and secure our facilities,” Wong-Bingham said. She said the most important thing that was discussed is situational awareness. “Don’t keep your head down. Make contact so that you know everyone that is in your environment so that odd things stick out, are seen and can be dealt with, so that you can be proactive and reactive when a situation is going on,” she said. Novi Police Chief Erick Zinser commented on the training via email. “In general, the training is important. Places of worship are community gathering places, and they welcome all visitors. Places of worship are seeing increased threats and hate crimes. Places of worship security training builds public trust and brings to light important training elements of security for places of worship. The training helps ensure the safety of their visitors and congregations and enhances overall community safety. The training is a true partnership between places of worship and their law enforcement communities,” Zinser said. Call Staff Writer Charity Meier at (586) 498-1092.

Crash
Krieg was born on Jan. 10, 1926, in Michigan City, Indiana. After graduating high school, she attended the Teachers College at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. As money was tight during World War II, Krieg said she worked a variety of factory jobs during the summers to pay for her tuition. She said in the summer of 1943, she worked as a telephone switchboard operator. The next year, she worked at an ammunition factory tying knots in cords for landmines, and then in the summer of 1945, while working at the Dr. Scholl’s corn plaster factory, she contracted polio at age 19. Krieg said she was told the disease was caused by flies at the factory, which didn’t have screens. She said Michigan City had 26,000 residents at the time and that there were over 300 cases of polio that fall. However, she fell ill shortly after arriving back at Ball State for her junior year. Krieg said the disease was miserable, but the iron lung machine they used to treat it at the time was far worse. She said that she was put in the machine after she failed to follow the doctor’s instructions not to drink water. “I had a temperature of 105 and they had put
weather-related and it appears to be the result of somebody driving under the influence of alcohol as well,” Johnson said. “That person struck a couple of cars, and then the remaining crashes happened as weather-related results of people trying to avoid that crash.” Johnson said that he believed some of the drivers might have been going too fast around the curve on the highway for the mounting slick and icy road conditions during the snowstorm. “Being at the location it was … I think people were coming around that curve a little bit quickly for the weather conditions, and then they were kind of running into a scene where they didn’t have ample time to stop, slow down or move over. So, we ended up having seven cars involved in it,” he said. The man who started the series of crashes was arrested for driving under the influence, Johnson said. According to Johnson, there were no major injuries and no fatalities. He said that two people had minor injuries. One person reportedly had minor rib pain, and another person reportedly had minor back pain following the crash. The person who had back pain decided to be evaluated at a hospital. No other injuries were reported. The incident caused the freeway to be shut down from Beck Road to Novi Road as police surveyed and cleared the scene. That stretch of the highway was reopened just before midnight that day. All seven cars had to be towed from the scene, Johnson said. The incident required an extensive police presence. Eight Novi police units tended to the crash. Novi police said that Wixom police and the Michigan Department of Transportation Courtesy Patrol assisted at the scene. Ruby Krieg is presented with a cake for her 100th birthday.
In Loving Memory of
Shirley Digirolamo NOVI, MI – Shirley Digirolamo, age 90, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on December 18, 2025, in Novi, Michigan. She was born on September 20, 1935, in Hamtramck, Michigan, to John and Frances Preniczky, who instilled in her the strong values that guided her throughout life. On Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1953, Shirley married the love of her life, Enrico Digirolamo. Their marriage of 72 years was a beautiful testament to devotion, faith, and enduring love, and Enrico survives. Shirley was a remarkably strong and independent woman whose perseverance shaped every chapter of her life. Growing up, her family moved often during her grade school years, experiences that helped shape her resilience and adaptability. She graduated from
Shrine of the Little Flower Grade School in Royal Oak and was a proud 1952 graduate of Immaculata High School in Detroit. With unwavering determination and a deep sense of purpose, Shirley devoted herself to raising her family. She placed great importance on education and faith, ensuring that each of her children received a Catholic education. Her quiet strength, steady guidance, and unconditional love were the foundation of her home and a source of comfort and inspiration to her family. Faith was central to Shirley’s life. She was an active and dedicated parishioner at St. Gerard Catholic Church in Detroit, where she taught catechism and served faithfully on the Mothers’ Club. She also generously gave her time to the Mothers’ Clubs at both Catholic Central
and Mercy High Schools. In her later years, as a longtime Milford resident, she found a spiritual home at St. Mary Catholic Church, where she remained active and deeply connected to her faith community. Besides her beloved husband, Enrico, Shirley leaves to cherish her memory and legacy her children: Enrico (Kathy) Digirolamo, Rita (Brad) Krause, and Mark (Sandee) Digirolamo; grandchildren: Lynn (Kirk), Joe (Erika), Scott (Bridget), Shara (Jake), and Tony; seven great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Thomasine Preniczky. She was a loving aunt and great-aunt, holding a special place in the hearts of her many nieces and nephews. Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved sister and brother, Jeanette Zalewski and John Preniczky, whom she dearly missed. A Funeral Mass was held at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church on Monday, January 5, 2026. Shirley’s life was defined by faith, family, and quiet strength. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered
by all who were blessed to know her. May her memory be a blessing. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Shirley’s memory may be made to the Society of the Little Flower, 1313 Frontage Road, Darien, IL 60561, or to the IHM Sisters, 610 West Elm Avenue, Monroe, MI 48162. 0171-2603

a glass of ice water and a wash cloth next to me, and the doctor said, ‘Don’t take a drink, just wet the wash cloth,’ but I was still a teenager and you tell teenagers why you don’t do it. And they put me in the iron lung, and I finally stopped choking because I had taken a drink. He had told me not to, and not why,” Krieg recalled. She said they told her to just go to sleep at that point, as it was 2 a.m., and she said she told them that she couldn’t sleep in the iron lung and that if she wasn’t going to sleep, no one else in the hospital would. “So, I started screaming, and of course (the nurse) thought I was hysterical, which I kind of was, and she slapped me a couple of times, and I said that’s not going to work, and pretty soon the intern, well, now they’re residents, he had been on the other end (of the building) on the second floor and heard me, and he came running in, and he said she has everybody in this hospital wondering what you’re doing to that poor child. I don’t think she needs to be in there. The nurse said, ‘I was told to put her in.’ He said,’ I don’t think she needs it anymore.’” She said she wasn’t able to talk the next
day, but she had gotten out of the iron lung after a little more than an hour. “I was probably in there a little more than an hour until I woke everyone up screaming,” she said. “And that summarizes her personality,” her daughter said with a laugh. Krieg said the machine was very tight around the neck and one could barely move one’s arms. “It’s a prison. It was very horrible and I was scared to death. I got out because I was scared. I didn’t want to spend my life in there,” she said. She was hospitalized for two weeks with the disease, but it left its mark. She didn’t eat for three weeks and lost 22 pounds. She recalled that her first meal after surviving polio was a cup of coffee and a gram cracker square. The following summer, the March of Dimes was created to help polio survivors. Krieg told them that she needed money to finish her senior year of college. They said they didn’t give money, but they decided to look further into it, as she only had her senior year left to complete. “When they found I had a 3.7 out of 4 (GPA), they said that I was worth saving,” she said. The March of Dimes paid for her senior year at Ball State, including tuition, room and board, and $5 a month spending money. She would go on to teach for five years before marrying the love of her life. They would raise four daughters together in East Lansing, Michigan, and then they moved to Arizona to get away from the cold Michigan winters. After her husband died, she moved back to Michigan in 2021 to be near her daughter. She said she contracted COVID-19 on the flight to Michigan. She said she had no idea how or why she was able to survive both ill-
nesses. She refused to wear masks during COVID-19. “Probably because I’m obnoxious, I guess,” she said. “You have to be a little feisty. You have to stick up for things and yourself.” Krieg keeps herself busy these days. She likes to do word puzzles, read, go for walks, listen to music — especially piano and flute — play bingo and 7 up and socialize. Her daughter joked that her mom instigates late night parties, as she stays up quite late. Krieg said she does do something unusual in that she keeps her door open so that she can see people walk by, as she has a corner apartment. “So, I get people to wave at me and stop in and say hello. That way I
don’t have to sit around and look at walls,” she said. She advises people to get up and do something. “Don’t sit on your rear end and do nothing. Get up and walk around, even if you have to walk around the block. Just do something,” Krieg said. “Basically, people are friendly if you’ll be friendly back.” “She is stubborn. She’s very independent, and when something is hard for her, she figures out a way to resolve it. Whether it’s figuring out how to get something off the floor or something to make her more safe, she figures it out,” Terri Douglas, of Novi, said of her mother. which plans and organizes the activities for wish week. “So, that was a blessing that we were still able to recover from that.” Pohlonski said that the annual event not only helps grant the wish of a child, but it unites the students as they join forces for the cause. She was one of the students who signed up to get hit by a pie. She said it was “super fun” to participate in the event. “It was so cool to see, like, the whole lunchroom come together,” Pohlonski said. “A lot of times we just stay at what we consider our tables. But for pie-a-teacher or tape-ateacher-to-a-wall, a lot of people came and crowded around, and it showed, like, how unified that the school was getting around these fundraisers, and it was just so cool to see everyone come together like that.” Call Staff Writer Charity Meier at (586) 498-1092.

Michigan Blood Collection: Today’s Donation May Lead to Tomorrow’s Cure Are you ready to contribute to a cause that makes a meaningful impact on global health? Become a donor and join Michigan Blood Collection (MBC) in its mission to accelerate advances in medical research. The company specializes in gathering normal blood samples for research focusing on diseases like cancer, genetic conditions and degenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. By donating blood, you become a crucial part of the global effort to find cures and improve lives. “Most people think of blood donation as something to help individuals, but we focus on research,” said Danika Sancho, general manager of MBC. “Every sample becomes a tool for discovery, whether aiding in the development of something diagnostic, supporting vaccine research or understanding a disease mechanism.” MBC is a brand operating under Dono Vivo, LLC, a biotech company that supplies scientific researchers with ethically collected human specimens including blood, plasma and serum both nationally and worldwide. MBC hosts weekly events at its Novi office. “We also partner with other organizations throughout metro Detroit as well as Ann Arbor,” Sancho added. “We are always looking for healthy adult donors, and eligible participants receive compensation. It’s an easy and meaningful way to give back.” The most rewarding part of her role, Sancho noted, is “seeing the tangible impact our collection work has on scientific research.” This sentiment is echoed in the stories shared by donors, constantly reminding the MBC team that their work serves the greater good. The company’s website, michiganbloodcollection.com, walks potential donors through the criteria for becoming a successful donor as well as information on upcoming events. “When you join our donor community, you have the opportunity not to just give back but to be part of a larger, long-term solution with the goal of advancing human health and scientific discovery,” Sancho said. Michigan Blood Collection is located at 46430 Peary Ct. in Novi. For more information, visit michiganbloodcollection.com or call (734) 656-8229. 0465-2516
