MARCHING BAND FUNDRAISER IS INSTRUMENTAL

ROSEVILLE — This was one way for the Roseville High School marching band to drum up school spirit.

On the late morning of Oct. 28, the talented musicians banded together to perform — in full uniform — on Rock Street, east of Gratiot Avenue and south of 12 Mile Road.

For about 30 minutes, they played their “Back to the Beach” field show live on the front lawn of the Osorio family, who won the raffle in the band boosters’ “Win the Band” fundraiser.

EASTPOINTE — A woman missing since late spring was found dead in a storm drain, and authorities in Eastpointe have apprehended a suspect.

The case of Samantha Guinther, 47, was

brought to the attention of Eastpointe police in September when one of the woman’s daughters reported that her mother was possibly missing and had not been heard from since June 18. The daughter told police that her mother was known to not return phone calls right away, but that too much time had passed for her to have not responded.

Police began investigating locations that Guinther had been known to frequent, shifting their approach from a missing person case to a possible homicide scenario.

EASTPOINTE — A public works project aimed at reducing combined sewer overflows in Eastpointe and St. Clair Shores is nearing completion.

In September 2022, Macomb County Public Works began excavation on what the department is calling an “in-system storage” project on Beaconsfield Avenue, south of Nine Mile Road in Eastpointe.

Workers dug approximately 50 feet below ground to reach a sewer pipe, which they then removed a section of to install a rubber weir. The weir, or dam, can be inflated during a heavy rain event and then released to allow the flow to be sent to the Great Lakes Water Authority’s Detroit wastewater plant for proper treatment rather than being discharged into Lake St. Clair.

The Macomb County Public Works Office stated that Beaconsfield Avenue, which has been closed throughout the project from Nine Mile Road south to Rosetta Avenue, might begin reopening by the end of December. The office believes that the project will be finished by the spring.

Great Start Readiness Program grows in Roseville Community Schools

ROSEVILLE — When Roseville Community Schools Assistant Superintendent of Personnel Peter Hedemark visited his wife Susan Hedemark’s preschool classroom Oct. 27 at Green Elementary, several students were eager to show him the lesson they were working on.

The students had been practicing how to write their first names and shared their finished work with Hedemark. Then it was time to gather on the rug to learn about the letter “R” with lead teacher Susan Hedemark and associate teacher Kelly Ford.

In another classroom with lead teacher Chelsi VanEtten, the students discussed the weather conditions of the day as associate teacher Ashley Allison prepared breakfast.

They also paid attention as VanEtten read the book “The Gingerbread Man Loose on the Firetruck.” The story was to help them prepare to meet members of the Roseville Fire Department, who were scheduled to visit the school that day to talk about fire safety.

“We have to make sure our listening ears are on, raise our hands and talk one at a time,” VanEtten reminded them.

This fall, RCS expanded its Great Start Readiness Program by increasing it from four to five full days per week. School officials also provide busing for students who live in the district. The Great Start Readiness Program is Michigan’s state-funded preschool for 4-year-old children. Families qualify for the free preschool program based on annual income guidelines.

The program is designed to teach children how to be good students before they attend kindergarten. The children practice how to listen and follow directions, take turns, build self-esteem and pay attention.

The GSRP classes follow a structured course called Creative Curriculum where independent learning and learning in groups are practiced. The activities are geared toward the student’s skill level.

The curriculum is designed to heighten the students’ confidence as they learn through play, hands-on activities and problem-solving. The research-based approach incorporates language, literacy and mathematics on a daily basis. Gross motor and fine motor skills are stressed, as are social skills.

VOLUNTEERS SOUGHT TO GIVE OTHERS A MERRIER CHRISTMAS

METRO DETROIT — The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit is seeking volunteer bell ringers for the 2023 Red Kettle Christmas Campaign. Shifts are available in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties.

BIG BIRD RUN TURNS 45

ROSEVILLE — Roseville’s 45th annual Big Bird Run jogs into town Nov. 12. There is a 10-kilometer, a 5-kilometer and a 1-mile fun run. Check-in is at 8:15 a.m., and the run begins at 10 a.m. from the Recreation Authority of Roseville & Eastpointe, 18185 Sycamore St. in Roseville.

The fast course includes Gratiot Avenue, the Interstate 696 pedestrian bridge and several residential streets. The 10K course is certified by USA Track & Field. Hanson’s Running Shop will provide gloves for all runners and raffle prizes.

The entry fee is $25 for the 1-mile run; $35 for the 5K; and $40 for the 10K by 6 p.m. Nov. 10. The fees cost $5 more on race day. Learn about the SS Eastland EASTPOINTE — Historian Andrew Kercher will present the program “The Titanic of the Great Lakes,” about the SS Eastland, at 2 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Eastpointe Memorial Library. The SS Eastland was a passenger ship based in Chicago and used for tours. In 1915, the ship rolled onto its side while tied to a dock in the Chicago River, killing hundreds of people. A ‘novel’ idea

ROSEVILLE — Roseville Public Library staff will hold a NaNoWriMo Write-In from 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 11 for those ages 14 and older. Man found guilty in fatal 2022 Dooley’s shooting

ROSEVILLE — A man has been found guilty of second-degree murder in a shooting that occurred at a Roseville bar in 2022 that left an employee of the bar dead.

Following a nine-day jury trial, Michael Deshawn Altman-Tucker was found guilty of several charges stemming from the shooting at Dooley’s Tavern that killed Julius Bing, a security guard at the bar.

At approximately 11:40 p.m. Feb. 26, 2022, Roseville police were dispatched Altman-Tucker to the Gratiot Avenue bar on a report of shots being fired. Upon arrival, officers said they found that Altman-Tucker had been fighting with employees of the bar as they tried to remove him before he produced a firearm and fired several times.

Bing, a 36-year-old man from Warren, died of multiple gunshot wounds. Another individual who has been identified as a friend of Altman-Tucker’s was also injured.

However, in a press release dated Feb. 27,

2022, the individual’s injuries were “not believed to (be) serious.”

Altman-Tucker was found guilty of second-degree murder, a potential life felony; assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, a possible 10-year felony; and two counts of felony firearm, a two-year felony.

Altman-Tucker’s attorney, Jason Malkiewicz, did not return a request for comment.

This was not the first fatal shooting that occurred at the bar. In 2019, Nolan Baca, then 21, of Clinton Township, allegedly shot a Harrison Township man in the bar after an argument escalated into a physical altercation.

Baca was initially facing charges of second-degree murder, assault with intent to murder, carrying a concealed weapon and two counts of felony firearm. But at the scheduled time for his bench trial on Aug. 9, 2022, he pleaded no contest to one count of felony firearm, one count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder and one count of involuntary manslaughter.

Macomb County Circuit Court Judge James Maceroni, who was handling the case, said the court treats a no-contest plea the

same as a guilty plea. Baca currently is in prison with an earliest release date of April 1, 2027.

After the shooting of Bing, a petition began circulating online asking the owners of Dooley’s Tavern to close the bar perma-

nently. On Feb. 28, 2022, police announced that the bar would be closing permanently.

Altman-Tucker is scheduled to be sentenced at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 6 in front of Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Joseph Toia.

With the help of the Michigan State Police Crime Lab, a search warrant was executed Oct. 25, leading to the arrest of two persons of interest. One was the victim’s son, Justin Jackson, while the other was a friend who has since been released from custody.

Further investigation led to the discovery of Guinther’s body, which had been put into a storm drain west of Jackson’s home. Eastpointe police worked with the Macomb County Technical Rescue Team to locate and retrieve the body, and the Macomb County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the body as Guinther’s.

Jackson was arraigned Oct. 27 in 38th District Court on one felony count of murder, first degree, punishable by life in prison without parole; one felony count of tampering with evidence in a criminal case, punishable by more than 10 years or imprisonment for life; one felony count of concealing the death of an individual, punishable by five years in prison and/ or a $5,000 fine; and one felony count of lying to a police officer in the investigation of a violent crime, punishable by up to four years in prison and/or a $5,000 fine.

Jackson’s attorney, Gary Francis Kennedy II, did not return a request for comment by press time.

Corey Haines, the interim police chief for Eastpointe, praised the work of his detectives.

“The Eastpointe Police Department worked tirelessly on this investigation to investigate every possible lead in an attempt to locate Ms. Guinther,” Haines said during a press conference Oct. 27. “Eastpointe detectives, with very little information, were able to put all the pieces of this investigation together and locate Ms. Guinther, and take the person responsible for this heinous crime safely into custody. The solving of this case with very little evidence at the onset is another shining example of the hard work, determination and dedication of our Police Department.”

Rice said that the increase to five days a week from the previous four days was driven from the state level to increase class time.

“We have been observing the differences in kindergarten preparedness for years and it is always consistent. GSRP students from the previous year are substantially ahead of most other students in socialization, behavioral norms, and play/interaction with other students,” he said. “We may not have a defined metric to measure all of the factors, but student performance and educator observation over the years has been consistent.”

There are four RCS preschool classes at Green, three at Fountain Elementary and two at Kment Elementary. Students in the program must attend all five days; parents can’t just enroll their children part of the time. Currently, there are 144 students in the district’s GSRP. Most of the students are Roseville residents, with a small percentage attending from out of the district.

Peter Hedemark said the state of Michigan used to fund the preschool program with less per pupil funding than the K-12 students. However, because of the large focus on early childhood education, that is changing.

Presently, the school district receives $9,608 in per pupil funding for K-12 students. The same amount is being distributed to preschool students, although Hedemark said the plan is for the state to increase the early childhood education funding by $200 for each student.

On average, a K-12 classroom has 25 to 30 students with one teacher. However, a preschool classroom generally includes a lead teacher, an associate teacher and an aide to cover both teachers when they are on lunch.

One of the newest teachers to come into the program at RCS is Eric Bishop. The educator has taught at the elementary, middle school and high school levels, but feels most at home in the preschool environment.

“I get a chance to tap into my inner child. Children can tell if an adult is good people. They sense my energy. Men are so needed at all levels of education,” he said.

“The American household is changing.

You see less fathers and more single mother homes. There is less male interaction.”

For a while, RCS officials had a difficult time finding candidates to fill the open teaching positions in the district. However, they are always looking for aides and substitute aides.

ing federal, state and county funds and is not expected to cause any increase in sewer rates, according to a press release sent by the Macomb County Public Works Department earlier this year.

The project is aimed at reducing the amount of combined sewer overflows in Eastpointe and St. Clair Shores, which happens when stormwater from a heavy rain event mixes with the sanitary sewer, overwhelming the infrastructure. In this area, the water is then sent to a treatment facility where it is treated before being released into the lake.

While the state permits the county to do this, Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Candice Miller said it’s “not right.”

“We need to do a much better job for our magnificent Great Lakes water quality and quality of life for the next generation,” Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Candice Miller said. “In Macomb County, we have a total commitment to protecting Lake St. Clair and we’re willing to spend the money.”

The project is expected to reduce com-

bined sewer overflows by about 15%, Miller said, which is in addition to another 30% reduction created by changing processes and operations at the pump station.

While the work has been ongoing, residents in the area have “been great,” Miller said.

“This is a very, very busy road,” Miller said. “Some of (the residents) have said there’s a lot less traffic. … They’ve had to put up with all of the noise for construction.

They have been great. I think they understand what the project is; how important it is for water quality in the lake.”

Eastpointe City Manager Mariah Walton said she hasn’t heard of any complaints from residents.

“The county has been incredible to work with on this project,” she said in an email. “They communicate regularly and are very thoughtful of the residents in the area.

We have not had any complaints in this area during the construction that I’m aware of.”

How does it work?

Steve Rozycki, an engineer for Macomb County, said they realized early on that after some of the larger storm events, when water would be discharged into the lake, the tunnel — which has an internal diameter of

about 11 1/2 feet, would only be filled by 3 or 4 feet.

“So that’s where we said, ‘OK, what can we do to force that storage within the existing tunnel,’” he said.

Once the inflatable bladder is installed, it will be able to inflate and seal the pipe, allowing water to be stored, Rozycki said.

Smaller gates are being installed along bypass access chambers that will allow the county to control the flow being sent out.

“After the rain’s over, when we want to release that water, the small gates will crack open and we can slowly control how much flow we send out so we don’t just deflate the bag and send it off,” he said.

The reason behind the bladder being inflatable, he said, is to help prevent failure.

“One thing we always look at is, ‘What if it fails; what’s the ramifications of failure?’ … It’s basically a balloon that fills with air.

The fail is, just open the valve and let the air blow out. The bag will deflate and let the flow go. Or if it doesn’t work during the beginning of an event, so what. It’s just like the existing system,” Rozycki said.

While a building housing all of the controls for the system has been constructed, Rozycki said it won’t have to be staffed, although employees will stop by regularly to

check on the equipment and do inspections.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year and will be online early next year, Miller said. Once completed, all residents will see is an access hatch in the roadway and the small building that will house the system’s control units.

At home football games this season, the band boosters sold raffle tickets to raise funds for the program. The winning ticket holder won a personal performance from the marching band on the ticket holder’s front lawn. Daniel Chesher is the band director.

“I was ecstatic. It made my year,” said Donette Osorio, the prize winner. “I love the marching band so much. I love Mr. Chesher.

It’s an amazing group of kids.”

The band members set the stage with their rendition of Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water,” followed by Camila Cabello’s “Havana,” the “Jaws” movie theme, “Wipe Out” by the Surfaris, and others. Their showmanship decorated the lawn, sidewalk and driveway of the residence.

Not only did the show entertain an appreciative audience, but it also raised $500 for the band sponsors organization, which helps to cover the costs of new uniforms, raincoats, the band trailer and meals for students before home football games.

The Osorio family provided a brunch for attendees that included doughnuts, hot chocolate, bagels and pumpkin cookies. The family includes mom Donette Osorio; her partner, Sal Tabarez; her daughter, Anna; and her son, Zack, who was in the marching band when he attended RHS. Zack’s favorite song of the set was “Havana.”

“I liked ‘Wipe Out,’ myself,” Donette Osorio said.

For Tabarez, the event “was a lot better than I could have ever imagined.”

“The overall reaction was very positive,” Tabarez said.

When the band played “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” from the “Trolls” movie, onlooker Benjamin Wekwert said, “That was the best song ever.” The youngster attended the “Win the Band” concert with his mom, Caroline Wekwert, whose older son, Anthony, was a member of the band when he was at RHS. He graduated in June and is now in college.

“I do miss it,” she said of being a band mom. “It’s really cool to have the band playing in the neighborhood.”

Others got into the vibe.

“This was so awesome. They’re so vibrant,” said Linda Iafrate, whose grandson, Traegen Green, is in the band. “The kids, they’re so dedicated. They’re so loyal and passionate about what they do.”

About 60 students are in the marching band, but not all of them could attend the performance. “Back to the Beach” was performed throughout the season at home football games, the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association Marching Band Festival, the Troy Athens High School Scholastic Marching Bands Invitational, and the Brandon High School Scholastic Marching Bands Invitational.
