Rochester Police Department launches project for people with special needs

ROCHESTER — The Rochester Police Department has spearheaded a new initiative designed to improve interactions between law enforcement and those with special needs and other vulnerabilities.

As a mother of a child with autism, Rochester Police Officer Brenna Hogue said she’s all too familiar with the stresses of realizing her daughter had quickly slipped out the door.

“She would wander — I think she got out maybe five times or so. It’s a super quick instance where you turn your back, and all of a sudden, she’s gone. And being a mom, especially for the kiddo that can’t talk, it is so, so scary,” she said. “From that personal experience and my personal experience as a first responder, as a police officer, and dealing with

ROCHESTER — Downtown Rochester held its 13th annual Rochester Posed event Oct. 2 with 19 businesses turning their storefront windows into live mannequin displays.

This year’s theme was “Netflix & Still: Original Streaming Content,” with a variety of mannequin displays, including “Bridgerton,” “Wednesday,” “Stranger Things” and more.

Event attendees were able to cast a vote for their favorite live mannequin displays through SMS polling. There was also a selected panel of judges who scored each window for the Judges’ Choice winner.

New comfort dog joins Rochester Police

ROCHESTER — The Rochester Police Department recently welcomed a new comfort dog to the team.

Leo, a 12-week old Cavalier King Charles spaniel, has arrived and is under the care of Lt. Keith Harper.

There is a dual meaning behind the name Leo, which Harper said stands for both “Law Enforcement Officer” and “Love Each Other.”

“His job is basically to make people happy and to make their day a little better, no matter what the situation is,” Harper said. “His presence has been very positive.”

Ex-Rochester Hills doctor pleads no contest to 31 counts of sexual misconduct ROCHESTER HILLS — A former Rochester Hills doctor has pleaded no contest to a slew of sexual assault charges.

Oumair Aejaz, 41, pleaded no contest Oct. 9 to 31 counts of sexual misconduct in two separate cases, according to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office. Authorities said no contest pleas have the same effect as a guilty plea.

“Thursday’s events confirm Oumair Aejaz’s guilt,” Prosecutor Karen D. McDonald said in a statement. “While we did not and would not offer this abuser any leniency, I’m grateful the plea ensures victims will not have to testify at a trial. Their bravery, and the good work of law enforcement, made sure Aejez will never again harm another victim.”

Aejaz pleaded no contest to: two counts of first degree criminal sexual conduct; three counts of second degree criminal sexual conduct; four counts of child sexually abusive commercial activity; 13

counts of using a computer to commit a crime; and nine counts of capturing/distributing an image of an unclothed person.

He faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years for first degree criminal sexual conduct, and his sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 2 in Sixth Circuit Court.

New Professional Clothes Closet needs donations

ROCHESTER — Rochester Christian University is seeking donations for its new Professional Clothes Closet, which will provide current students with free access to professional clothing appropriate for interviews, internships, networking events, conferences and career fairs. The type of clothing needed is modern professional suits and suit separates (jackets/blazers, pants, skirts, and dresses); button-up shirts and blouses; and gently used/like new dress shoes and belts. All items must be recently cleaned, with no rips, tears, missing buttons, or stains.

Rebekah Pinchback, dean of the School of Business and Technology, started the initiative to help remove financial barriers for students and empower them with free career wear, so they can step into professional opportunities with confidence.

“It has become evident that not all students have access to necessary career wear.

Our goal is to help our Warriors feel confident, professional and prepared when making a positive first impression,” Pinchback said in a press release.

The closet is size-inclusive, and all clothing is provided at no cost to students.

Students also receive free resources and information on the importance of dressing professionally and the different types of professional attire in the workplace.

ROCHESTER — Each year, the Rochester Garden Club identifies the grounds and gardens that are most outstanding and bestows its annual Beautification Award. This year, the winner is the the OPC Social & Activity Center.

Eleven years ago, well-known gardener and newspaper columnist Nancy Szerlag wanted to take on a garden project to keep her busy in retirement, and a friend showed her the OPC gardens. The gardens were neglected and in a sorry state, but she threw her energy and talent at it and now there are multiple gardens that offer tranquility, beauty and a diverse number of colorful plants.

When Szerlag began this project, she worked by herself, but over time she found many volunteers to help take on the

gardening tasks. OPC volunteers came with all different skills, many master gardeners themselves, and she was able to teach anyone who wanted to learn. They proudly call themselves “The Late Bloomers Gardening Group.” With more hands and strong backs, the group was able to expand the grounds with a butterfly garden and a rock garden.

Meadow Brook hosts Halloween events

ROCHESTER HILLS — Meadow Brook’s annual Mystery Dinner invites amateur sleuths to a captivating and glamorous evening of mystery and mayhem at the Great Estate. The immersive and interactive event includes a three-course meal, a full signature bar and a chance to solve the mystery. a way for first responders to identify nonspeaking people and those unable to remember critical information. Through the free service, personalized QR-coded stickers are provided for loved ones, which can be affixed to belongings, clothing or devices.

This way, if a loved one with autism, dementia or a traumatic brain injury wanders or becomes lost, a trained officer can scan the sticker and access critical information, such as emergency contacts, medical details or special needs.

“We’ve had many calls like that in the last couple of months, where people have wandered off,” Rouhib said. “Through the program, families would register, and they would get these stickers that have personalized QR codes on them. You can put the sticker on a cellphone, laptop, bike seat, a piece of their favorite clothing, a purse, or anything. Once you scan the logo, it pops their photo up and tells you who they are, and it has an emergency contact on there.

That’s where the new Special Needs, Autism, Vulnerable Persons, Elderly and Safety program comes in.

Rochester Police Chief George Rouhib and Hogue created the nonprofit initiative built on the belief that everyone deserves to feel safe during moments of crisis or confusion.

“There’s no other city in Michigan that has a program like this,” Rouhib said.

The S.A.V.E.S. program aims to foster understanding, improve communication and inclusion with individuals with unique needs, and ensure the safety of all community members.

The Blue Envelope Program aims to improve interactions between vulnerable individuals and law enforcement. Drivers who are nonverbal, or those with autism, anxiety, or other medical conditions can register for a blue envelope to place on their visor. The envelope holds important documents and information to help first responders interact with an individual’s specific needs in mind.

“For example, we stop people that have low blood sugar. Many officers would treat that person like they were intoxicated, and in fact, they have a medical condition,” he said. “But if they sign up for this program, we would know right away what’s going on and we can adjust the way we approach them. Maybe they need assistance. We can call someone to pick them up — the key is to have a positive interaction with them.”

A S.A.V.E.S decal placed on their rear window notifies law enforcement officers to look for a blue envelope for their unique needs.

“When a police officer sees that decal, it’s a visual cue. The idea is we have to change our mindset from the time we see that sticker to the time we confront them in the car, so we’re going to be more patient, more understanding and empathetic. The goal is to make the traffic stop a positive one,” Rouhib said.

The final step is community outreach.

By educating officers and the public about supporting community members with cognitive and developmental challenges, Hogue said the program can spread awareness, understanding and compassionate engagement for all.

“We’re going to do whatever we can to get people registered to help people have more controlled environments and make a difference,” she said.

Leo can be found greeting community members at various public and school events, senior living communities and community outreach programs.

“He’s doing his job,” Harper said. “He’s very friendly and likes to be petted and held.

He has a good demeanor for all ages. He’s doing well.”

The four-legged officer, Rouhib added, will also provide a sense of calm in critical incidents — such as mental health calls, domestic violence cases, reports of child abuse and criminal investigations.

“Anytime we have an incident where there is grief, loss or trauma, we’ll bring him along,” he said. “Dogs, in general, have this persona that relaxes you. Let’s say you’re depressed. Just holding a dog and interacting with the dog brings your stress level down — even if it’s only for a few minutes, it’s something.”

The comfort dog was provided to the Police Department free of charge, thanks to donations from Premier Pet Supply, Rochester Hills Tire & Service, Serra Ford Rochester Hills and Fox Chevrolet.

“All the donations more than covered the purchase of the dog. It will cover grooming, the vet bills, food bills, any kind of toys and equipment the handler needs,” said Rouhib.

Leo replaces Rochester PD’s first comfort dog, Walter, who was handled by school liaison officer Amy Drehmer. Walter is no longer with the department’s comfort dog program.

“The last handler was a school liaison officer, so that dog would go to the schools, primarily,” Harper explained. “This time around, the program is more all-encompassing, where he can be at the schools, with citizens, at churches, businesses, the Police Department, and City Hall, and interact with everybody.”

Leo joins the Police Department’s other dog — Maverick, a dual-trained K-9 specializing in tracking and narcotic detection.

“He’s a smart dog,” Harper said. “He’s doing really well.”

Rochester Christian University to inaugurate Reggies Wenyika as its 11th president

ROCHESTER — Rochester Christian University will celebrate the inauguration of Reggies Wenyika as its 11th president Oct. 23-24 in conjunction with homecoming weekend.

Wenyika, a distinguished educational leader with three decades of academic and executive leadership experience, started at RCU June 1. He previously served as president of Ottawa University Kansas from 2018 to 2024 and of Southwestern Christian University in Bethany, Oklahoma, from 2014 to 2018.

Officials said Wenyika has successfully guided accreditation processes; expanded innovative academic and athletic programs to advance student enWenyika rollment and diversity; and cultivated impactful global, regional and local partnerships with communities, donors and institutions.

RCOC installs ‘mumble strips’ to improve traffic safety

ROCHESTER HILLS/OAKLAND TOWNSHIP — The Road Commission for Oakland County began installing additional “mumble strips” on approximately 12 miles of road Oct. 8.

The work will take place on sections of roadway in Oakland Township and Rochester Hills, Orion Road in Lake Orion Village, roadway in Orion Township, and Dixie Highway in Springfield Township.

Mumble strips, like the more common rumble strips, alert drivers when they cross the center line. The difference, according to officials, is mumble strips generate less noise outside the vehicle, reducing the disturbance for nearby residents while creating similar interior sound to keep drivers alert and improve safety.

The Road Commission said alerting drivers they have crossed the center line is important because center-line crossover crashes are the most common type of serious-injury and fatality crashes on Michigan’s roads.

Work began Oct. 8 on Orion Road, from Rochester Road in Rochester Hills to the roundabout at Flint Street Miller Road and Orion Road in Lake Orion. P.K. Contracting, of Troy, the project contractor, is directing traffic with flaggers during the work; motorists can expect some delays.

Once the work is completed, crews will move to Dixie Highway from Oak Hill Road

to Davisburg Road. Work will take place outside of peak traffic hours. Dixie Highway will remain open, though motorists can expect moving inside lane closures.

The approximately $151,000 project is primarily funded through a federal safety grant. Weather-permitting, work is expected to be completed by mid-October.

Oakland Township announces fall water flushing schedule

OAKLAND TOWNSHIP — The fall water system flush in Oakland Township will occur between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. various days through Oct. 23. After flushing is complete, officials said water may be temporarily discolored and people may want to flush their plumbing system. It is suggested this be done from a faucet or valve before the water enters the water softener, such as from an outside hose bib.

On Monday, Oct. 20, Country Creek, Woods of Country Creek, Country Creek Commons, Village of Country Creek, The Crossings, Century Woods, Twin Lakes, Plum Creek and Knorrwood Knolls will experience water flushing.

On Tuesday, Oct. 21, flushing will occur in Country Creek, Woods of Country Creek, Country Creek Commons, Village of Country Creek, The Crossings, Century Woods, The Heights, Wyngate Club House and Pinnacle.

On Wednesday, Oct. 22, Kirklands, Cloisters, Claremont, Kingsridge, Silvercreek, Carrolton, Century Oaks, Silverbell Road, Trout Creek, Belmonte, Blossom Creek, and Blossom Springs will experience water flushing.

PICK THE RIGHT CONTRACTOR FOR WORK ON OLDER HOMES

METRO DETROIT — Older homes have unique architectural details and character that modern homes can never fully replicate, but as anyone who’s ever owned one can attest, with that age comes the need for more repairs and renovations.

And while some projects can be done by the homeowner, many require a skilled professional. That’s why it’s so critical to hire the right contractor.

It’s something Rebecca Torsell, director of historic preservation for the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores, knows well. On Oct. 2, Torsell gave the talk, “Caring for Your Historic Home: A Guide to Hiring Right” at the Ford House.

One of the most important things a homeowner can do is hire a contractor who specializes in working on older homes. Look at the kinds of projects they’ve done and check their website for words like “historic” or “preservation,” Torsell said.

A contractor should know the material needs of older homes, such as using copper nails on slate roofs. For anything built before 1950, Torsell said masons should be using Type O or lime mortars, not Type N or Quikrete.

Referrals are one of the best ways to find a contractor, as is asking a contractor you know and trust who they use for a particular type of work. Another resource is the Michigan Historic Preservation Network directory, which lists a wide array of contractors from across the state. Torsell said homeowners still need to do their homework, as contractors pay for these listings, but it’s a good place to start. Torsell said maintenance is “the first line of defense.”

For example, trimming trees so they’re not touching the roof helps to keep bugs out and painting wood protects it from rotting.

Men posing as DTE employees found guilty of murder ROCHESTER HILLS — Two men disguised at DTE workers were found guilty this month of murdering Hussein “Sam” Murray in his Rochester Hills home last fall.

On Oct. 3, separate juries found Carlos Jose Hernandez, 38, and Joshua Zuazo, 40, both of Dearborn, guilty of one count of first-degree murder and two counts of unlawful imprisonment. Both defendants had separate trials in the same room with separate juries.

The verdict comes nearly a year after authorities say the two men, posing as DTE workers, came to Murray’s home claiming they needed to investigate a gas leak.

Murray, 73, who owned a jewelry store in Hamtramck and a pawn shop, escorted

the two men into his home on Newcastle Drive Oct. 11, 2024, and into the basement.

Linda Murray, Hussein Murray’s wife, testified that Hernandez came back upstairs without her husband and asked her where her jewelry, safe and cash were.

Zuazo, she said, was close behind, coming upstairs seconds later. Linda Murray said she then inquired about the whereabouts of her husband.

“Zuazo tells me, ‘He’s sleeping,’ and I notice blood on his vest, and I start screaming,” she said, adding that Hernandez then hit her in the face to cover her mouth.

She further testified that Hernandez bound her ankles and wrists with duct tape while Zuazo ransacked the house, looking for valuables.

When investigators arrived, they found Hussein Murray’s body in the basement. Police initially believed he had been shot in the head.

Oakland County Deputy Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Shauna Bryan testified in court that Murray, whose hands and legs were bound with duct tape and zip ties, was severely beaten. His autopsy showed he suffered multiple blunt force injuries to the head and neck, including a broken jaw and two fractures in a U-shaped neck bone called the hyoid.

Bryan determined the primary cause of death was “neck compression,” or sustained pressure on his neck. The manner of death, she said, was a homicide.

bonded, and have the proper equipment to tackle the job, Torsell said.

Define the scope of the project and what your goals are, Torsell said. Then, determine what kind of contractor you need for that type of work and learn as much as you can about how that work should be done.

The National Park Service has dozens of articles — called “Preservation Briefs” — on its website that provide insight into historical building work topics, including roofing and masonry. Visit nps.gov/orgs/1739/preservation-briefs.htm to read them.

Torsell advises discussing the payment schedule up front and never giving a contractor a deposit of more than 50%.

She said it’s a red flag if a contractor wants a homeowner to sign an agreement or put down a deposit immediately.

“Individuals should watch for high-pressure sales tactics, upfront fees, and businesses that do not have references to vouch for their work,” said Nakia Mills, vice president of digital and brand marketing for the Better Business Bureau of Michigan, via email.

Besides checking the BBB directory online to see if the business has been rated or reviewed, the BBB tells homeowners to search the company’s name along with words such as “scam,” “review” or “complaint,” to see what comes up.

“Ask about training, certifications, and background checks for the company employees or subcontractors,” the BBB stated in a press release. “Additionally, inquire about what kind of identification they’ll show when

they arrive at your home.”

Get multiple bids — at least three, if possible.

“Remember, the lowest bid for your remodeling project may not necessarily be the best bid; if one offer is significantly lower than the others, the contractor may be cutting corners or may not understand your work requirements,” the BBB stated. “Alternately, higher bids might include an emergency budget or even different tiers of service.

Carefully consider the ‘why’ behind these bids before making a final decision.”

Good contractors, said Torsell, take the time to explain their work thoroughly, communicate with and respond to customers, are passionate about what they do, clean up after themselves and often have generational experience after learning the craft from a relative.

With the exception of plumbers, Torsell

said contractors shouldn’t charge a fee for a site visit.

The BBB said homeowners should get everything in writing, including estimates.

Regardless of the project, Torsell said homeowners should set aside a contingency of at least 10% to 15%.

“In preservation, you should always expect the unexpected,” she said.

Bill Sikora, of Sterling Heights, an attendee at Torsell’s lecture, knows this personally, having been involved in restoration projects at the homes of two family members.

He recommended having an even larger contingency than 15%.

“There’s always going to be someone uncovering something,” Sikora said of projects involving older homes.

Rochester Medical Center: Pioneering the Future of Cardiac Care

Heart disease is the nation’s leading killer, causing a heart attack every 40 seconds and a cardiac death every 90 seconds. “Prevention is the only solution to heart disease, the No. 1 killer of men and women,” said Dr. Pierre Charbel Atallah, M.D., CEO and second-generation practicing cardiologist at the Rochester Medical Center (RMC). “We are prevention pioneers; it’s our specialty.

The technology’s power was proven just weeks after its launch. A patient arrived with mild symptoms that might not have raised alarms

elsewhere. The new AI system analyzed the data within seconds, flagging a critical blockage in the left anterior descending (LAD) artery, referred to as the “widow-maker” due to its lethal potential.

“Part of what I love about cardiology is that we can actively do something,” Dr. Atallah said. “When the AI flagged that blockage, we moved straight to intervention. It was exciting for us and life-saving for the patient.”

An angiogram confirmed a 90 percent blockage posing an imminent risk of a fatal heart attack. The team placed a stent and restored blood flow, preventing what could have been a deadly event—marking the first time in Michigan that an AI-driven diagnosis directly saved a life.

The center’s AI platform can analyze complex cardiac data from 3D Heart Scans— within seconds. “The problem with heart disease is that it’s largely asymptomatic,” Dr. Atallah said. “Once you feel chest pain or shortness of breath—it’s too late. For

“Try to include things that you’ll enjoy doing, because you’ll be more apt to do them,” Madison Heights Active Adult Center supervisor Jennifer Cowan said. “I think if you take the winter off it’s going to be really difficult, in the spring, to get back up and do the things you want to do.”

The Madison Heights Active Adult Center hosts a multitude of activities in the winter. Not only are there classes and groups meeting all the time, but the location also offers a free exercise equipment room and an indoor walking path so that you can use the center even if you can’t make a class.

“One of our guiding mindsets here is that the longer you stay active, the longer you’re able to do things on your own and remain independent, the longer you can stay in your home, and you can continue to do the things you want to do. I think it all connects,” Cowan said.

There are so many health benefits to working out as a senior, but a full-blown workout plan isn’t necessarily required to

reap those benefits. There are tons of activities offered in the area that simply get the blood pumping a little bit and provide an excuse to see others.

“We have a ton of different classes like yoga, chair yoga, Pilates, line dancing, and ballroom dancing, too,” said Matthew Dubinsky, the St. Clair Shores Senior Activity Center’s senior coordinator. “It’s yearround, so they can be consistent at it. We can keep people moving all year.”

The center is also doing balance classes through the Macomb County Health Department and has done classes that teach people how to shop for healthier meals, too.

These places are more than just workout spots. They have become pillars of the community where everyone is safe, welcome and encouraged to socialize all year-round.

“They come to the senior center and it’s not just doing yoga or a fitness class.

It’s really the mental stimulation part of it, too,” Dubinsky said. “I think that’s one of the best parts of it.”

young children — after his wife disclosed to authorities that he had been secretly recording her and their two minor children, as well as female relatives in their home.

Authorities discovered thousands of nude photos and videos of children and adults in his home that were reportedly taken with hidden cameras while the victims — children as young as 2 years of age, all the way up to grown adults — were changing at Goldfish Swim School, in hospitals, in changing areas, and in various other locations over at least the past six years.

“This individual is potentially one of the worst I’ve ever seen, because there is no particular category — it’s not just children.

It’s not just women. It’s not just men. It goes from a 2-year-old boy to a grown woman,” Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said previously. “The victimization is so broad and the perversion so great that we’re just beginning to wrap our arms around it.”

Authorities say Aejaz recorded sexual encounters he had with numerous women, with hospital patients who were either asleep or unconscious, and recorded relatives and strangers in the bathroom or while changing clothes.

He was arrested last August at his Rochester Hills home, arraigned in 52-3 District Court in Rochester Hills and charged with one count of child sexually abusive activity, four counts of capturing an image of an unclothed person and five counts of using a computer to commit a crime. The charges stem from incidents at Goldfish Swim School in Rochester, where Aejaz is alleged to have filmed two women and two children,

ages 2 and 4, in a changing area. Investigators believe the victims were filmed from a nearby changing stall. The child sexually abusive activity charge, according to authorities, involves an unidentified minor and is not related to the swim school incidents.

Detectives confiscated six computers, four cell phones and 15 external storage devices from Aejaz’s home. One device contained more than 13,000 videos Aejaz recorded during the past six years. Detectives estimate it will take six months to complete a forensic examination of all the confiscated materials.

Aejaz, a citizen of India, has been working in the United States on a visa. He came to the United States around 2011, completed his residency at Detroit Sinai Grace Hospital and then moved to Dawson, Alabama. Aejaz returned to Oakland County to continue his practice in internal medicine in 2018 and had privileges at Ascension Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc Township and Henry Ford Macomb in Clinton Township, but was not on staff.

Aejaz was later charged with an additional 17 felony charges connected to six alleged sexual assaults in 2023 and 2024 involving a 5-year-old girl in Novi, according to the Oakland County Sheriff ’s Office.

Police said an investigation remains ongoing related to other recorded assaults that may have occurred at medical facilities in other counties, and additional charges remain possible in those jurisdictions.

Aejaz’s attorney, Mariell Lehman, could not be reached for comment at press time.

She later texted, “I’m so nervous but you guys seem to have it down. I feel better now that you have a good getaway car.”

The prosecution presented evidence tying the defendants to the crime, including duct tape and zip ties matching those used to restrain Murray, text messages, surveillance footage, DNA found on items at the scene and in the basement, and eyewitness testimony from Linda Murray.

“At no point have I ever theorized that only one of the defendants obliterated Mr. Murray in that basement. I don’t believe only

one of those defendants had contact with him when this was occurring. I believe both defendants had contact with him in that basement,” said Assistant Prosecutor John Pietrofesa.

Both defendants declined to testify.

Zuazo’s attorney, Michael McCarthy, argued that the prosecution failed to clearly identify Zuazo as a participant, citing a lack of evidence found at his home. He emphasized that Hernandez had the greater involvement, citing his money problems and desire to buy a house with a nice yard for his new wife.

Hernandez’s attorney, county public defender Paulette Loftin, said Hernandez did not take part in the beating of Murray and doesn’t fall into any of the states of mind needed for the felony murder charge.

She claimed there was a lack of blood evi-

dence on Hernandez and shifted the blame to Zuazo, who Linda Murray testified was wearing clothing with blood on it when he returned from the basement.

First-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole.

WATCH Fire investigated

ROCHESTER HILLS — The Rochester Hills Fire Department requested assistance from the Sheriff ’s Office Fire Investigations Unit for a residential structure fire in the 2600 block of Hessel Avenue at 4:20 p.m. Sept. 20. No injuries were reported.

The incident remains under investigation.

Clothing stolen from Lululemon

ROCHESTER HILLS — Deputies were dispatched to Lululemon, 252 N. Adams Road, for a retail fraud that had just occurred at 8:25 p.m. Sept 20. The store employee stated that three females, who were all described as being between 18 and 26 years old and wearing all black, and one male, who was described as being 18-26 years old with dreadlocks and wearing all black, entered the store empty handed. Once inside the store, they all started grabbing as much clothing as they could carry and ran out of the store into a white Tesla before fleeing the scene. The store employee estimates that over $3,000 in merchandise was stolen. Deputies are investigating.

MSU jersey stolen from car

ROCHESTER HILLS — Deputies were dispatched to the 1700 block of Bedford Square Drive on a report of a larceny from vehicle at 10:49 p.m. Sept. 24. The caller said his vehicle had been parked for approximately 36 hours before he realized that $200-$300 worth of miscellaneous items, including a Michigan State football jersey displaying No. 9, was missing. He believes he had left his vehicle unlocked. Detectives are investigating.

ROCHESTER HILLS — Deputies were dispatched to meet with an official from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in reference to the execution of a search warrant at the Red Roof Inn, 2580 Crooks Road, at 5 a.m. Sept.

25. Deputies learned that the suspect, a 42-year-old woman from Pontiac staying at the motel, was responsible for the robbery and kidnapping of another individual. Officials executed the search warrant at the motel. The suspect was found in the room and taken into custody. A search of the room revealed weapons, phones and additional evidence related to the robbery/kidnapping.

Woman crashes car into bank

ROCHESTER HILLS — Deputies were dispatched to Citizens Bank at 44 North Adams Road on a report of a female driving into the front of the business at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 25. Deputies determined that a 63-year-old female driver operating a 2020 Chevrolet Blazer had attempted to make a left turn from the Village of Rochester Hills Mall onto southbound Adams Road, just north of Walton Boulevard. During this maneuver, she collided with a 2022 Western Star semi-truck and trailer driven by a 40-year-old man from California traveling in the left southbound lane of Adams Road.

The driver improperly utilized the two-way continuous left-turn lane as a merge lane to enter traffic, resulting in a collision with the side of the semi-trailer.

Following the initial impact, she inadvertently depressed the accelerator instead of the brake, causing the vehicle to accelerate uncontrollably. The vehicle veered left, crossed the northbound lanes of Adams Road, left the roadway, struck a traffic sign, descended an embankment, and ultimately crashed into the front of Citizens Bank. The

driver, a 63-year-old woman from Sterling Heights, was injured in the crash and was transported to the hospital for medical treatment. Police said alcohol and drugs did not appear to have been contributing factors.

The incident caused significant structural damage to both the vehicle and the exterior wall of the bank.

Golf clubs stolen from car

ROCHESTER HILLS — Deputies were dispatched to the 1600 block of Bedford Square Drive on a report of a larceny from vehicle at 7 p.m. Sept. 24. Upon arrival, deputies met with the caller, who stated he had left his vehicle unlocked overnight, and the following day at 5 a.m., he noticed his golf clubs were missing. Detectives are investigating.

Speeding driver found to be drunk

ROCHESTER — An officer on patrol in the area of Main and Olde Towne observed a vehicle travelling at 43 mph in a 25 mph zone at approximately 2:30 a.m. Oct 4.

The officer conducted a traffic stop, observed signs of impairment and requested the driver perform field sobriety tests. The driver failed the sobriety tests and was offered a preliminary breath test, which resulted in a blood alcohol content of 0.11%. The driver was placed under arrest, transported to the Police Department, and offered a chemical breath test, which resulted in a blood alcohol content of 0.12%. The driver was lodged until sober and released with a pending court date.

Driver on the road with a suspended license

ROCHESTER — An officer on patrol in the area of University and Helen observed a vehicle with a crack on the windshield and the driver using their phone while driving.

A traffic stop was conducted, and it was determined the driver had a suspended license.

The driver was placed under arrest, was transported to the station for processing and was released with a citation for a later court date.

Classic cars combine conversation and camaraderie

METRO DETROIT — When it comes to metro Detroit car shows, the camaraderie between gearheads is on display as much as the classic cars.

Checking under the hoods of hot rods while sharing stories of drag racing back in the day is how car buffs bond over their vintage rides.

Scott Fritts cruised on over to at least 10 classic car shows this past summer.

“It’s just hanging out with the guys talking about how much money we put into our cars,” said Fritts, who owns a blue 2017 Ford Mustang. “We’ll talk for hours on end to other people. It’s just relaxing. Family and friends stop by.”

On Sept. 27, the Auburn Hills resident attended the Jammin’ at the Junction classic car show in Roseville with co-worker Bill Burke and his son, Ryan Burke. Jammin’ at the Junction is an annual event that the Roseville Downtown Development Authority hosts on Utica Road between Gratiot Avenue and 12 Mile Road. Car buffs displayed their souped-up vehicles, customized motorcycles and more.

“It’s a local event so I don’t have to go far for it,” said Bill Burke, a Roseville resident and owner of a 1979 Plymouth Arrow, which he calls his Poison Arrow. “We like to see what other people have done to their cars.”

The trio is always tinkering in their garages to make the cars their own.

“We’re guys that don’t buy it from the factory,” Fritts said.

“We change everything,” Bill Burke said.

“We put our own personal preferences and what we like,” said Ryan Burke, of Shelby Township.

They would also like to see younger generations carry on the classic car tradition, something that seems to be missing.

Over at another spot at Jammin’ at the Junction, Chris Mielke and his wife, Ada Mielke, of Roseville; their uncle, John Mielke, of St. Clair Shores; and friend Larry Roberson, of Clinton Township, spent the day taking in the car culture.

Although Roberson doesn’t have a classic car, “I just hang out with the guys. I’m here with good people. There are different walks of life but a common ground around here.”

“We sit back and have a good time,” John Mielke said.

“I like the old school cars. It brings back nostalgia,” said Ada Mielke, owner of a 1994 Ford Mustang GT convertible. “I like the sounds, the rumbles, the smell of the old gas.”

Chris Mielke’s dad, Ken Mielke, who was John’s brother, owned a red 1965 Plymouth Barracuda and was always at Jammin’ at the Junction. Ken died in 2021, but his family kept up the tradition of attending car shows.

“He won a trophy his last year here, and two months later he was gone,” John Mielke said. “He did all the work in his garage, including painting it.”

Ken Mielke was an influence on his son, Chris.

“I was born into cars. I started building my first Jeep at 14,” Chris Mielke said. “I still own it. I was literally brought up at the old Mount See CARS on page 32A

METRO DETROIT — The end of the high school football season is near as Week 8 will be the second-tolast game of the season for most teams. This is a popular week for schools to go out of their divisions one last time before the season ends, and it also provides a handful of rivalry games.

Marquee matchup of the week

Farmington at Clarkston — 7 p.m. Oct. 17 It’ll be Senior Night for Clarkston as the historic program faces off against Farmington on Friday night. This will almost certainly be the game with the most eyes on it this weekend, as Clarkston sits atop the OAA-Red division and Farmington leads the OAA-Blue division.

Ferndale at Harper Woods — 7 p.m. Oct. 17 There’s a chance that Ferndale and Harper Woods are also both at the top of their respective divisions at game time. At press time, Ferndale was leading the OAA-Gold and Harper Woods was leading the OAA-White.

Troy at Troy Athens — 7 p.m. Oct. 17 Despite both of these teams sitting toward the bottom of the OAA-Blue, this crosstown rivalry is one that never disappoints. Troy heads into the rivalry matchup having defeated Athens four years in a row.

West Bloomfield at Bloomfield Hills 7 p.m. Oct. 17 This game may not look close on paper, but it’s another rivalry matchup and is also senior night for Bloomfield Hills. West Bloomfield is battling with Oxford

and Clarkston for the top spot in the OAA-Red, while Bloomfield Hills is trying to avoid a last-place finish in the OAA-Blue. This will be the first time since 2019 that the teams have played each other in the regular season.

Utica at Macomb Dakota — 7 p.m. Oct. 17 Utica is having a great season and may have a chance at the MAC-White division title depending on how the last two weeks of the season play out. Dakota is in a similar boat in the MAC-Red, and both teams will want to finish the season strong.

Hazel Park at St. Clair — 7 p.m. Oct. 17 St. Clair finds itself right in the thick of a competitive MAC-Silver in 2025 and the team ends the year with two out-of-division games. Hazel Park is also having a good season and has a chance to be one of the top teams in the MAC-Bronze.

On Sept. 28, the good vibes carried over to the 25th annual Holy Cross Classic Cruisers show at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Warren, which drew car fans and church members who volunteered to help with the show. Co-Presidents Ron Ratzow and Fred Birchard welcomed the crowd.

Birchard owns three classic cars: a 1948 Ford Deluxe Coupe street rod, a 1957 Ford Thunderbird and a 1966 Ford Mustang.

“We love trying to bring people together that enjoy cars,” Birchard said. “We’re like golfers. Golfers do anything to play golf. We do anything to play with a car, old cars particularly. We have cars from 1929 in the club, a ’32 Ford, a dozen or more prewar cars.”

“We have about 15 to 20 members of our car club. Half of them are members of the church,” Ratzow said. “Our whole purpose of the club is to let people have the opportunity to know Jesus.”

Ratzow, of Harrison Township, loves to bring his two-door 1935 Ford Sedan street rod to shows as well as his 1983 Chevrolet Malibu station wagon, which he modified so it resembled a Chevrolet El Camino. One of his favorite cars was his 1956 two-door Lincoln Premiere hardtop.

“I wish I wouldn’t have gotten rid of it,” he said.

Randy Stier, who owns a 1966 Ford Mustang fastback, also made it out to the Holy Cross Classic Cruisers show.

“I’m 78 and I’ve been doing this since I was 16,” the Warren resident said. “Car shows every weekend. I run into people I haven’t seen in a while. Car guys are good guys. Someone will show up with jumper cables or whatever you need.”

Madison Heights resident Paul Christlieb — who owns a 2007 Ford F-150 Harley Davidson Edition — attended the Holy Cross Classic Cruisers show for the first time this year.

“It’s awesome. The camaraderie is great,” he said. “You can walk out here and talk to anybody. If you have a problem, they come and help.”

Pretty soon the car shows will end until 2026.

“That is the time to work on them,” Christlieb said. “The cars get done in the fall and winter for next year.”

If you have a racing or irregular heartbeat, also known as an arrhythmia, one likely suspect is atrial fibrillation (AFib), the most common type. In AFib, the upper chambers of the heart beat chaotically and often too fast. In some cases, this can continue indefinitely (or until it’s treated).

But in many people, episodes of AFib come and go, which can make it harder to diagnose.

Atrial fibrillation risk AFib can develop in anyone, at any time, but it’s much more likely to become a problem as you get older. Other factors besides age that can increase anyone’s chance of developing AFib include high blood pressure, obesity, heart problems (such as heart failure or heart valve disease), thyroid disorders, heavy alcohol use, smoking, diabetes, kidney disease and sleep apnea.

In younger adults, conditions such as thyroid disease or sleep apnea can increase the risk. In women, high blood pressure and heart valve disease are more likely to lead to AFib. While in men, coronary artery disease and previous heart attack are more common risk factors.

Diagnosing atrial fibrillation … with your smart watch?

If you notice possible AFib symptoms, take note so you can discuss them with your doctor. During a check-up, your doctor should be able to pick up on an irregular heartbeat—if you’re experiencing an AFib episode. For the other times, a smart watch or wearable fitness tracker may help.

Many of the newest devices use a technology called photoplethysmography, or PPG. This feature uses pulses of light against the skin to measure blood flow through the wrist to track the rhythm of your heartbeat. This can be helpful for spotting heart rhythm disorders such as AFib. If you suspect you’re having periodic AFib episodes, your doctor also might send you home with a heart monitor to help figure out what’s happening with your heart rhythm.

AFib can be serious, but we can treat heart arrhythmias with medications and procedures. So don’t ignore that fluttering heartbeat. If you think you have a possible heart rhythm problem, it’s best to talk to your doctor.

Spotting AFib symptoms AFib symptoms may vary, and some people don’t experience them.

When symptoms are present, for both sexes these can include racing heart rate, heart palpitations (flutters or a pounding heart), shortness of breath, chest pain and fatigue.

Atypical symptoms: Women are more likely than men to experience symptoms such as fatigue and weakness.

•

Frequency and duration of episodes: Women tend to have more frequent and longer-lasting AFib episodes than men.

•

Stroke risk and severity: Women with AFib may be at higher stroke risk than men. And when women have a stroke, it tends to be more severe.

Warren Kiwanis Club gives RARE’s Indoor Park a boost ROSEVILLE/EASTPOINTE — On Sept. 23, members of the Warren Kiwanis Club presented a $1,500 donation to the Recreation Authority of Roseville and Eastpointe for its Indoor Park program. The funding will help with upgrading and replacing some of the toys used in the program. According to Lipinski, the Indoor Park program began about 20 years ago with a donation from the Roseville Kiwanis Club to help purchase toys. Roseville Kiwanis no longer exists, so the Warren Kiwanis continues to sponsor the program. The program attracts kids from all over, including Warren.

The Indoor Park program is for children ages 10 months to 5 years. It’s offered from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Sept. 16 through Dec. 18. The program will not meet Nov. 4 or Nov. 27. Children can explore climbers, slides, bikes, wagons, scooters and more. Parents must supervise their children during this drop-in program, as no instructor is present. The cost is $2 per child per visit or $20 for a punch card. The RARE center is located at 18185 Sycamore St. in Roseville.

COREWELL HEALTH CHILDREN’S RAISES $116,000 ROYAL OAK — On Sept. 13, more than 2,000 people joined the Corewell Health Children’s Walk at the Detroit Zoo and raised $116,000.

The money will go toward the Children’s Miracle Network program at Corewell Health Children’s.

Participants dressed as their favorite superhero or fantasy character for the walk. All participants also received their own cape and visited the animals along the 2-mile path around the zoo.

While going through the path, people got to meet popular fairytale and comic book heroes provided by the League of Enchantment.

MDOT reminds drivers to pull up to the white line at metered ramps NOVI — The Michigan Department of Transportation has placed temporary electronic signs at metered ramps along the Interstate 96 Flex Route to remind drivers to pull all the way up to the white line when the signal is red. Doing so ensures that the sensors at the meters are activated appropriately, according to a press release.

The ramp metering signals are located at eight entrance ramps along the I-96 Flex Route, which goes from Novi to Milford roads in Oakland County. The meters can be found at the entrance ramps from:

• Southbound Milford Road to eastbound I-96.

• Southbound Milford Road to westbound I-96.

• Northbound Milford Road to eastbound I-96.

• Wixom Road to westbound I-96.

• Southbound Novi Road to eastbound I-96.

Officer hit while assisting law enforcement

FARMINGTON/FARMINGTON HILLS — A Farmington public safety patrol vehicle was rear-ended while assisting the Farmington Hills Police Department at around 1 a.m. Sept. 14 on eastbound M-5.

Reportedly, the vehicle that hit the patrol car was speeding while passing another car, and the Farmington public safety officer was in the patrol car at the time of the collision.

Both the officer and the driver of the vehicle were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The case was being investigated by the Farmington Hills Police Department.

South Old Woodward Avenue, near a local theater, for a report of disorderly conduct.

A 49-year-old man from Livonia reportedly threatened another man, called him offensive names, and attempted to expose his genitalia, according to police.

Officers said the suspect was intoxicated and uncooperative. Witnesses reported that the man appeared intoxicated, was disruptive inside the theater, and became upset when asked to leave, yelling obscenities at the reporting party.

The suspect was arrested for disorderly conduct, and officers later learned he had active warrants in multiple cities for similar incidents. The investigation was ongoing.

Out-of-state fugitives arrested

ROCHESTER HILLS — Deputies responded to a Live 911 call on a report of a possible domestic assault in the 6900 Block of Rochester Road Sept. 12.

Deputies arrived and contacted the man and the woman, who matched the description given by the caller. Deputies gathered further information and determined the domestic assault was “unfounded.”

Deputies discovered both subjects had extradition warrants in the state of Colorado for parole violation.

Colorado confirmed the extradition and both subjects — a 30-year-old woman from Colorado Springs and a 31-year-old man from Denver — were transported to the Oakland County Jail without incident, pending extradition.

Nike merch stolen

ROCHESTER HILLS — Deputies were dispatched to Dicks Sporting Goods 1290 S. Rochester Road, on a report of a retail fraud at 3:43 p.m. Sept. 6.

The caller stated that three suspects had stolen a shopping cart full of Nike merchandise and fled the area in a white Kia. A man and two women entered the store and placed numerous items from the Nike apparel section in a shopping cart. The man pushed the shopping cart out of the front of the store, bypassing the cash registers and all points of purchase without offering or attempting payment. The three suspects then loaded the stolen merchandise into a white Kia sedan bearing an Ohio license plate and left the parking lot, last seen driving east through the lot onto Rochester Road. The store manager reported that over $1,500 worth of merchandise had been stolen. Deputies conducted a FLOCK camera search for a white Kia with an Ohio plate and located a 2025 white Kia with an Ohio plate near Rochester Road and Nawakwa Road shortly after the theft.

Deputies, using FLOCK, tracked the vehicle from Toledo, Ohio, to Rochester Hills, and then back to Toledo from Rochester Hills within the time frame of the theft. Photos and video were obtained of the suspects, and the suspect vehicle was identified with the registered owner’s information. Detectives were investigating.

HAZEL PARK — At around 10:16 p.m. on Sept. 18, Warren police located a silver Ford Taurus traveling northbound on Dequindre Road. The vehicle had been reported stolen out of Westland. Warren police attempted to stop the vehicle while a Hazel Park officer arrived as backup.

The stolen vehicle reportedly failed to stop, leading Warren and Hazel Park police on a pursuit westbound on East George to Merrill avenues and then westbound on Eight Mile Road. The stolen vehicle continued to North Chrysler Drive where it struck a curb and crashed into a guardrail. Two passengers were detained while the driver fled on foot.

The driver ran from officers into backyards on East Muir and East George avenues. The Hazel Park officer located the suspect hiding in a bush. Officers also reportedly recovered a semiautomatic pistol in the suspect’s pocket and another handgun next to the suspect.

The suspect was turned over to Warren police for further investigation.

TROY — Officers were dispatched around 10:48 p.m. Sept. 7 to the parking lot of the Walmart store at 2001 W. Maple Road for a welfare check. The caller was concerned for her cousin who was on a road trip and couldn’t be reached by phone.

Police located the subject, described as a 45-year-old man from Orlando, Florida, and noted he had a handgun in his backpack. The man reportedly did not have a license for the weapon, so he was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed weapon without a permit.
