hank you. The completion of Building the Vision’s construction phase is a wonderful opportunity to express our gratitude. We have been blessed with tremendous support for Catholic education, and it is by living out that mission on campus that we best express our gratitude. John F. Kennedy said, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”

Gibbons leaders Achieve Success A visitor recently asked if things will finally slow down on campus once construction is finished. Quite the opposite, I replied. The level of activity at Cardinal Gibbons will continue increasing, because of the tremendous potential of the people in our community.

So many teacher programs and classroom innovations, new clubs and Spiritual Life initiatives, and myriad art, athletic and co-curricular opportunities have all been waiting for these new facilities. The best way for our school community to say thank you, is by filling each new space with the spirit and love that is a hallmark of the Gibbons experience.

The new spaces are a home for connections, collaboration and creativity. They will allow our students, faculty and families to learn more, create more and dream more, so that we may be formed as faith-filled people of service and leadership. The “end� of Building the Vision construction is really just the beginning, and we are so grateful that you are joining us on this exciting, inspiring journey.

The new spaces also provided places to gather as a faith-filled community, to share life’s goodness with one another, and to spread the Gospel to the world around us. community service program in the Triangle with students and faculty performing over 100,000 hours of community service in support of area non-profit groups.

Laura Sheridan ’14 - were named National Merit Scholarship winners by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation; and Mmerobasis Kanu ’14 received a National Achievement Scholarship.

 Two students were named national winners in the American Mathematics Competition. Victor Madormo ’15 was named the 12th grade winner and Andrew Rosso ’16 was named the 10th grade winner.

 Trevor Lenzmeier ’14 captured first-place/respondent in the national Moot Court Competition sponsored by American University’s Washington School of Law, while Bailey Schultz ’14 came in second-place/North Carolina in the U.S. Institute of Peace Essay Competition.

Such tools also encouraged teachers to embrace new ways to instill old lessons and students to learn them in a college environment. They can do both wherever and whenever they choose since every inch of the Gibbons campus is a virtual classroom. This year also saw the start of new technology classes like video game design as well as the opening of Makerspace, where students work on projects

 Cardinal Gibbons hosted the Eastern Regional FIRST Tech The 1-1 digital resource initiative takes off.

Challenge Tournament, which drew 13 teams and over 300 visitors.

 The Cardinal Gibbons Robotics team applied for its third patent; the first patent, for a folding forklift, has been issued and the second is under review.

 Faculty members received training to explore and develop sustainable teaching strategies within a digital classroom environment.

 The technology program partnered with Cisco Systems of

Cary to encourage high school girls to envision careers in science, technology, engineering and math.

A

t Cardinal Gibbons, the fine arts are part of our school’s history and central to its commitment to learning, teaching, and serving. Nowhere is the spirit that is Cardinal Gibbons revealed more clearly than in the works of our student- artists, actors, and musicians. Thanks to the new spaces, there are now additional occasions for our students and faculty to express themselves, to innovate, to create, and to reflect our school’s artistic heart. There are also more opportunities for collaborative work among disciplines and for outreach to our local community, including our area middle school partners.

Such outreach embodies the Catholic ideal of turning scholarship and creativity into service. The added space also translates to an increase in the already varied programs offered and numerous events presented annually, all the while still functioning as classrooms where relationships between student and teacher and between artist and audience thrive. All these activities, in turn, promote continued student, family, and community participation.

Such participation is evident everywhere you look at Gibbons and is a true reminder that the arts continue to contribute to the quality of life on our campus.

GIBBONS IMPACT

 The department hosted a variety of Diocesan middle

school events, helped coordinate the first annual Diocese of Raleigh Performing Arts Showcase, Catholic School Live, held at Gibbons in May, and strengthened relationships with professional artists who offer workshops and classes.

 Student-artist Lauren Morris’14 was awarded the Rhode

Island School of Design Outstanding Artist Award for her accomplishment in the visual arts.

 The department added more dance and music concerts as well as theater performances to accommodate its growing program, which now serves over 900 students.

 Nine student-artists in the Visual Arts program were named Gold Key winners and 11 were named Silver Key winners in the Eastern/Central Regional Scholastic Arts Competition.

his year, Cardinal Gibbons continued to build upon its tradition of excellence and integrity in athletics, a tradition that makes achieving on the playing field an equal partner with achieving in the classroom and the community. Student-athletes at Cardinal Gibbons display the resolve to meet personal and team challenges, the leadership to motivate and inspire themselves and those around them, the stewardship to share their skills and talents, and the commitment to be of service to others. The addition of the new spaces has only strengthened that tradition and assisted in increasing our school’s TCSAC middle school involvement, providing additional and indoor practice times, and expanding the annual evening of intramurals known as the Crusader Games. The space also enabled the expansion of our Strength & Conditioning program, which increased its staff as well as its services to the entire school community. More space, more services, and more flexibility have led to more innovation – long a hallmark of athletics at our school. Guided by Catholic values, Gibbons athletics today is even more committed to bringing out the best in all students so they may learn, serve, lead, and succeed.

ntegral to the life of our school, more than 700 dedicated parent volunteers participated in the Family Association hosting events, welcoming visitors, and providing hospitality to enhance school spirit and support the family we call Cardinal Gibbons. That so many parents are willing to volunteer to enrich the education and experiences of students is a key reason our school is such a special place. The additional spaces have not only enhanced Gibbons as an effective learning environment but also as a spiritual community where parents have the same formational opportunities as their students. Parents are both partners in our mission and ambassadors of Gibbons pride.

Spring Social Chair, Tina Stevens, led a successful event with Susan VonLehmden as Patrons Chair and guests enjoyed a fun-filled evening.

 Parent volunteers hosted special

luncheons for students as well as faculty and staff throughout the year.

 Partners in Prayer prayed for our Gibbons family.

 Gibbons parents provided hospitality

for all school events, from Family Football Night and Open House to Back to School Night and coordinated aspects of such annual school celebrations as the Junior Ring Mass and graduation.

 Volunteers held three fundraising

events – the Golf Tournament, the Online Auction and the Spring Social – to support the Gibbons school community.

 Volunteers worked as ambassadors

to our Catholic middle schools, helping to spread information about Gibbons news and activities to the next generation of Crusaders and their parents.

Alumni members of our faculty helped lead a successful “105 in 105” Challenge.

he Catholic mission that permeates Cardinal Gibbons continues well after graduation. No one can attest to that fact more soundly than our school’s nearly 5,000 alumni who share the long history and unique traditions of their alma mater. The recent addition of new learning and gathering spaces to our campus offered them as well as current students myriad opportunities to create new traditions, to connect to one another, to establish lifelong friendships, and to pass on “the Gibbons experience” to the next generation of Crusaders.

The new spaces also enhanced what makes Gibbons the special and prayful place that will always, always welcome them home.

 Over 250 alumni responded to the first-ever

Alumni Survey, expressing their excitement and pride in their alma mater today.

 Gibbons Drama program expanded in an exciting new direction with the launch of its first alumni summer theatre company.

 The first-ever “105 in 105” Challenge exceeded its

goal with 114 contributors donating to Gibbons in a spirited 105 hours.

 The alumni coordinator visited alumni on eight

college campuses in the southeast, keeping Gibbons graduates informed about and connected to their alma mater.

 More than 200 alumni returned to campus for nine reunions and other activities during an exciting Homecoming Weekend.

 Twenty-five alumni returned to campus to share information about their professions with current students for the Annual Alumni Career Day.
